Punahou punter commits to UH

Punahou punter Alex Trifonovitch commits to the Warriors.

Here’s the online story: Trifonovitch

Is there a football game today?

In college football, this is Super Sunday because it’s the last open recruiting day before Wednesday’s start of signing period. Starting at midnight, each school is limited to making one phone call a week to each prospect.

The Warriors brought in 12 prospects this weekend. With the possibility of losing a prospect or two, the Warriors are prepared to enact contingency plans. The Warriors also would like to save a scholarship for a late commitment.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

The NCAA got so mad at UNC, put UH on death watch. 🙄

Interesting story on AKA this morning. Wondering how it will affect the individual booster clubs (of which I am a board member).

Make plans to come to the SSC on Wed and Fri to watch the Warriors battle the $poiled Children.

    GO WARRIORS!!
    GO WAHINE!!

  2. hatakeman February 1, 2015 10:02 am

    Do txt msgs count?

  3. kapakahi February 1, 2015 10:12 am

    ST,

Thanks for your visitor headcount of 12 for this weekend……since I could only verify 10 (1 from the continent + 1 from the island homeland + 8 local boyz).

Hope that UH’s Plan B recruiting contingency plans also have back-up contingency plans…..at least a Plan C (e. g., Hensley as a Plan B or even C contingency isn’t even a sure thing).

    Good Super Bowl morning everyone!

After today, 213 days until the UH football season opener.
Switching to normal life mode soon… 😕

  5. st. anthony trojan February 1, 2015 11:05 am

Good luck UH coaches…hope all ur extra effort…pays off in spades…n you ‘book em dano’….n get all you had hoped for….

GOOD LUCK TO THE super bowl dudes today….hope the winners n losers..all come out after the final whistle with no injuries….no scandals…n less drama by the
sea swallows…really don’t care for all that trash talking…

Hope all enjoy the game 2-day….

MANINI…seems to me…on some of the allegations…no way in my mind can you equate those allegations to what UNC is alleged to have done….buy wrong is wrong…is good that they let both coaches go when then did…just sad it was the coaches involved…if was fans.. be sort of understandable…

  6. 1 February 1, 2015 11:48 am

I guess Scott Fisher and Kerry Rupp have no loyalty to Gib. Give them a job and they throw you under the bus.

  7. clyde February 1, 2015 11:56 am

    Stephen: Did they lose Ursua?

  8. kapakahi February 1, 2015 11:58 am

    #6,

Any good boss knows that…..loyalty….and respect…..from one’s subordinates……should not be expected as entitlements…..but instead need to be developed and earned by the boss.

  9. Tempmanoa February 1, 2015 11:58 am

The rule is the same for anything like this– the coverup is usually worse than the crime, so do not lie, hinder, or try to affect the testimony of other witnesses.

  10. Warbow February 1, 2015 12:20 pm

Gib needed to take lessons from the big boys on how to cover things up from the NCAA.

  11. Kick February 1, 2015 12:22 pm

Guess I got my numbers wrong. If I counted correctly. I thought Hawaii needed to bring in at least one maybe two interior defensive linemen from the JC ranks. If I’m not mistaken, I don’t see any on ST’s preliminary list. Wish someone on the blog way smarter than me can show me how we will address our needs up front. Of course not having a DC in place mighg make it more difficult to plan for. Al. Jeezy, A-House, you guys have anything that will make me feel better about our interior D-line? Perhaps I’m missing the returnees?

  12. Kifi February 1, 2015 12:35 pm

Great day to see a movie. Theaters are empty.

  13. Derek February 1, 2015 12:46 pm

Clyde, ST said Ursua is going through the clearinghouse. Right now in limbo. We have to wait.

  14. st. anthony trojan February 1, 2015 1:11 pm

Limbo…is a great dance…should check it out… bet he would make a great dances with his ‘elusive moves’ he he he

  15. BigFan February 1, 2015 1:19 pm

Saw in the article that Salanoa Alo-Wily as a commit. Does that mean he re-committed to Hawaii? or he just not sure right now?

  16. A-House February 1, 2015 1:20 pm

I was away when BJ made the “stupid” decision to move the home opener against Colorado from a Saturday night to a Thursday nite and a 7 pm starting time. Is he trying to “kill” football???

What was his “logic” and I use the word loosely? Someone mentioned to allow UH 2 extra days to prepare for Ohio State – that is so stupid – no matter how much time UH is allowed to prepare, they will NOT win the game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is he trying to dismantle UH sports?

Very disappointed that UPPER CAMPUS still allows him to make decisions beyond his last day as UHAD.

  17. A-House February 1, 2015 1:24 pm

    ST:

your article identifies 22 possible for 2015 – what happens to the other 3 or is 22 the total number UH is allowed for 2015?

or, holding out that a player or 2 may actually sign a Hawaii LOI?

darn clouds are back in the valley again – was hoping for a bright, sunny day for extra hot water and “free” electricity.

  18. kapakahi February 1, 2015 2:42 pm

    #14,

    Still deciding…..

  19. Warbow February 1, 2015 3:29 pm

#17…we all know how still deciding always works out for Hawaii on LOI day.

  20. st. anthony trojan February 1, 2015 3:34 pm

Don’t be so pessimistic # 18… things are changing fast n furious up there…
    he he he

  21. Bryson February 1, 2015 4:41 pm

Interesting Nela Otukolo from Bishop Gorman just decommitted from UNLV,I wonder if Hawaii has a shot…

  22. BigFan February 1, 2015 5:08 pm

Wow, even big time coaches make bonehead calls. Pass on the one yard line with game on the line and Lynch available?

  23. BigFan February 1, 2015 5:09 pm

Kapakahi, thx for the reply. Cannot be committed to two teams?

  24. kapakahi February 1, 2015 5:15 pm

    #18 & #20,

Otukolo not going to UNLV……might influence Wily with his decision…..but don’t think UH will go after Otukolo……since has several new LBs already coming in.

  25. kapakahi February 1, 2015 5:19 pm

    #21,

Pete outsmarted himself……instead of go Beast Mode……maybe to spare Marshawn from becoming the MVP with 2 TDs…….and the post-game podium speech……as well as the “I’m going to Disney World” commercial……

Otherwise, can’t think of any good reason for that play call…..

    Hmmm……

  26. hatakeman February 1, 2015 5:27 pm

It has to be one of the top bonehead decisions of all time by a head coach in a Superbowl game.

  27. kapakahi February 1, 2015 5:34 pm

    #20 & #23,

Otukulo now deciding between Boise State and Fresno State…..
    http://recruiting.scout.com/story/1508491-otukolo-has-decommitted

  28. Sangamon Keith February 1, 2015 5:36 pm

Otukolo got late offer from Boise State, but also being pursued by Fresno.

  29. Sangamon Keith February 1, 2015 5:40 pm

With Otukolo de-committing, it’s time for Wily to rethink his commitment and come back to UH.

  30. kawika49 February 1, 2015 5:42 pm

I will always remember; Arnold Palmers wife’s response on what whe does for him: I wash, clean his balls and dry them. Big difference from deflated balls

  31. Shadow February 1, 2015 5:43 pm

Every Coach I know from Pop Warner to Pro would have run the ball on that last Seattle series for the Super Bowl Win.

What a boneheaded call in the most important game of the year! Embarrassing!!

  32. kawika49 February 1, 2015 5:49 pm

    she

  33. al February 1, 2015 5:50 pm

Kawika…I wish my wife did that for me and she can deflate em if she wishes. 🙂

  34. kawika49 February 1, 2015 6:02 pm

Winnie Palmer, wife of Arnold, was seated on the couch, next to her husband
Arnold, who was a headline guest on The Tonight Show. Arnie had just won a
big tournament. I have no idea which one, but I would guess it was probably
The Masters or a US Open, since talk shows don’t make it a habit of inviting
golfers to be guests except right after a big event for which there was
national interest. Although back in those days (the early ’60s), Arnie was
such a media darling, it could have been just about any time.

Anyway, Johnny turned to Winnie and asked her if she had any superstitions
before her husband played in a big tournament.

Winnie replied, “I kiss his balls.”

  35. al February 1, 2015 6:02 pm

trifonovitch’s committ fills a big hole us.

  36. al February 1, 2015 6:03 pm

kawika…i wish my wife, er, you know.

  37. Pomai February 1, 2015 6:17 pm

#15 A-House lunch says we win the game.

  38. BigFan February 1, 2015 6:27 pm

#32, al that might be painful, lol.

  39. PONO February 1, 2015 6:58 pm

So what’s the scoops from all the insiders after the biggest recruiting weekend for UH?

  40. pollypicador February 1, 2015 7:04 pm

The Seahawks and Jean Van de Velde, 1999 British Open

All the golfer had to do to secure the win, especially with a three stroke lead going to the last hole was to layup on his second shot, taking all risk out of play. No. Instead he goes for the hole, and the shot caroms into the grandstands. Meltdown. He eventually loses. He needed a 6 on the par 4 to win. He made 7 and eventually lost in a playoff. I can still see the “huh” look on the golf commentator’s face when the golfer took out a driver to tee off (not 3 wood or long iron like a smarter player with a lead) on the narrow fairway…Choke. Not smart.

The Seahawks also committed a Van de Veldian in the Super Bowl today…relinquishing a 10 point second half lead and having questionable play call at the end.

With the ball at the 1 yard line (or was it the half yard line) and on the cusp of a win all that remained for the Seahawks name being etched on the trophy was a high percentage run by Marshawn Lynch. No. Instead Wilson passes over the middle and the ball is intercepted. I wanted the Seahawks to win. Some say boneheaded call. Over the season (according to the ESPN announcer) Lynch was 1-5 from the one yard line on the season so I can see some of PC’s logic. But why over the middle? There could have been a tipped ball or even a defender jumping the route. Sad. Lost money.

It hurts. Put yourselves in the shoes of the golfer or the Seahawks today. You come knocking on the door. You’re all but in-you swing for the fences (where all you needed was a controlled swing, high percentage play)-you miss. The rest is history, where your name and performance is synonymous with meltdown….questionable call.

  41. David J. February 1, 2015 7:25 pm

You have to understand the NCAA they don’t want the kids of University that can’t bring in the money!. Just like SMU and others and also the University of Hawaii too!. Look around other big University they only get a slap on their wrist!. Or not let them go or turn their head the other side!. Because if they had play right way!. Ohio State, Florida State and other should be on suspension too!. but they won’t touch them because they are making a lot of money!. And look what happened at Penn State!. NCAA came out and said that? They we’re wrong!. NCAA should look at each other faces and said that? We had put a great coach in the grave!. But they won’t do that! Because really their don’t care about other people in their life!. Because the peoples that works in the NCAA thinks that the counties are stupid and don’t care!. They are wrong again!

  42. jeezy33 February 1, 2015 7:33 pm

Were not even going for Otukolo tho. Were set at the LB position. We probably stopped recruiting Ronley too after signing Russell Williams and getting Solomon Matautia to commit.

  43. 3-Prong February 1, 2015 7:51 pm

    Dear Recruits,
Yes this place, its people, and your teammates are as awesome as you experienced this weekend. Welcome to Rainbow Warrior Nation!

  44. WarriorMojo February 1, 2015 8:04 pm

Obviously, Paul Allen called that play from the owner’s box. Lynch’s contract is up and Allen didn’t want him to have the extra bargaining power of Super Bowl MVP.

  45. oldyobo February 1, 2015 8:08 pm

Norm Chow should have called the play for Seattle.

  46. kapakahi February 1, 2015 8:10 pm

Since apparently offered to play 2 sports (WR/KR/PR in football & LHP in baseball) for UH, could this be offer be as an invited walk-on (like Apelu & Wilson)?

  47. beans February 1, 2015 8:11 pm

It was my opinion today that two of the best NFL coaches had their teams ready to play and was interested to see the strategy that they would employ. It was 59 minutes of great coaching. Pats depending on the pass even thought Brady was picked twice. Seattle grinding it out waiting for their opportunity. Then just when it looked like the win was to be taken………….. probably the worse play call of all Super Bowls!
One coach still remains in the top tier the other blew it. auwae!
Sometime the conservative call is the right one. Right Norm?

  48. oldyobo February 1, 2015 8:13 pm

Saw the list of recruits for UH in today’s paper – pretty slim pickings. No wonder UH ranks at or near the bottom in recruiting. WOW, a punter from Punahou!

  49. jeezy33 February 1, 2015 8:23 pm

If Hawaii does decide to go for another LB, I would full court press Kendrick Jackson. I think he might be Jerrell younger brother. Decommitted from Arizona. Probably going Arkansas

  50. A-House February 1, 2015 8:37 pm

    Pomai:

#34: don’t know which game you are referring to, but you’re on

with Chow and what’s his name OC in place, I do not expect any big changes in the selection of plays – just like the “bone head” call by Seattle’s OC when it’s 2nd down and 1 1/2 yard to the end zone and not running the ball with Lynch!

    lunch we lose!!

  51. hatakeman February 1, 2015 8:39 pm

The PK for UCLA is Ka’imi Fairbairn of Kailua/Punahou School. Punahou seems to be producing not only D1 linemen like Kaumatule, but kickers as well.

  52. A-House February 1, 2015 8:42 pm

interesting that my post is awaiting “moderation”, but it’s posted already!!

    what gives??

  53. 3-Prong February 1, 2015 9:06 pm

I didn’t have a dog in the fight (how Bout Dem Cowboys!) but I slowed that play down with super slow motion and it appeared that Butler bumped the receiver out of the way a slit second before the ball arrived…interference! Surprised no one offered that suggestion up.

  54. 3-Prong February 1, 2015 9:07 pm

    Split Second

  55. 3-Prong February 1, 2015 9:31 pm

…oh and Butler was the guy that also grabbed the receivers foot to trip the wide open reciever and was not called for it.

  56. kapakahi February 1, 2015 9:47 pm

    #51,

FYI……Punahou Class of 2016 junior Punter/PK John “Jet” Toner is already rated as the No. 1 rated punter and No. 21 rated PK in the nation for the Class of 2016…..
    http://chrissailerkicking.com/player-rankings/profile.php?player=5610
    http://chrissailerkicking.com/player-rankings/profile.php?player=4174

Must be an impressive punter…..cause he already has more range than Fairbairn. Successfully kicked a 48 yarder against Kahuku in the State semis……then a 53 yarder against Mililani in the State finals…..with 5+ more yards of distance on each towering kick.

  57. kapakahi February 1, 2015 9:54 pm

    #49,

    Related…..but not brothers.

    Cousins.

  58. hitman February 1, 2015 10:09 pm

aloha all what a game today!! came down to one play !! lets hope UH had a great weekend with the kids that came in !! coach chow RB love is still unsigned !! his your game changer!!!

  59. Warbow February 1, 2015 10:20 pm

Big recruiting day of the year and we get a punter. Ummm

  60. kapakahi February 1, 2015 10:24 pm

    #59,

…..but still need a placekicker too.

  61. jeezy33 February 1, 2015 10:26 pm

    59. Norms offense does allow the punter to be used quite often though.

  62. jeezy33 February 1, 2015 10:27 pm

Maybe this recruit can kill 2 birds with one stone… Jason elam duties…

  63. Maddog50 February 2, 2015 5:03 am

Watched the Punahous kids tapes, big kid at his age for kicker, very quick on the punting action. He has a lot of room for growth and he is pretty darn good now. Welcome Alex!!!! Go Warriors!!!!

  64. 3-Prong February 2, 2015 5:50 am

    What? Johnny Football Enters Rehab.

  65. Shoko February 2, 2015 7:02 am

The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Get off the bottle and see a clinical psychologist to see if there are any screws loose.

  66. rage777 February 2, 2015 7:34 am

I wonder if his father’s name is Dave. When I was playing soccer, my coach was Dave Trifonovich. He played semi-pro soccer, really nice guy.

  67. BigFan February 2, 2015 7:47 am

    His son

  68. pollypicador February 2, 2015 8:42 am

    RE-#48

It’s true. UH is last in the conference in recruiting at rivals and 247 sports.

    http://247sports.com/Season/2015-Football/CompositeTeamRankings?Conference=M-West

What’s impressive is San Jose-20 3 star recruits. Boise-16 3 star recruits, 1 four star recruits. San Diego-13 of the 23 recruits 3 stars. Fresno-(!!!) 11 of the 14 recruits 3 stars. Hawaii-1 recruit rated 3 stars (so far). Yeah! (at least we get one).

If this trend doesn’t improve before LOI day it will be a very ominous outlook for the Warriors in the future, especially when you compare the other team’s gets. How Chow proceeds (if he gets that far) will be interesting (and probably sad) to see, especially with the less than stellar recruits he is bring in.

  69. jeezy33 February 2, 2015 9:01 am

Not even close to true… I don’t buy into rankings in the first place. Obviously top 250 guys are legit, but after that not very accurate.

    Those rankings don’t account for:
Max Wittek – Would be considered 4 star I suppose.
    Dylan Collie- 3 star
    Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea – 3 star
Aaron Zwahlen- ESPN top 300 recruit

Not trying to hype our class but I don’t think were near dead last in MWC.
