A local radio host declared the tiresome “Deflate-gate” will be put to rest, finally, because the officials did not mark the pre-game air pressures of New England’s 11 below-pressure footballs.
That’s the same logic I use when I tell the District Court judge I wasn’t speeding because the police officer didn’t fill all the blanks on my ticket. I’ll also argue that everybody else was going the same speed and, besides, the speed limit should never be that low for that area. The thing is, I heavy-pedal it enough to know how fast I’m driving. And Tom Brady has thrown enough footballs to know when one is under-inflated. Whether he or any other Patriot was responsible for the deflation does not negate the fact that he knew he was throwing footballs that were not up to standard.
In a morally ideal world, Brady would sorta-sorta ‘fess up: “I didn’t deflate the footballs, but I knew they were deflated,” just like I would sorta-sorta ‘fess up: “Your, Honor, I know the radar gun was malfunctioning, but, yeah, I was speeding.”
When you’re in seventh-grade PE, when you commit a foul, you raise your hand (presumably in the direction of the imaginary scorekeeper). But that’s not real sports. Runners on second steal catcher’s signals. NBA players flop. Volleyball players pretend they didn’t touch a spike by raising and wiggling their hands. Receivers pop up and signal for first downs after short-hopping passes.
Those tactics have been going for a while. The point of this loooong digression is that on this final recruiting weekend, all the tactics are used. One of the no-nos — a coach leaving a program and then re-directing his previous school’s recruits to his new school — is now common practice. Sports is not always about good manners.
One of the exceptions was in 1985 when UH was looking to hire a basketball coach. Mike Montgomery, who was 133-66 at Montana, was a leading candidate. But the salary was $58,000 and back-room politics ruled decisions in Hawaii in general and Manoa campus in particular. Stan Sheriff, who was UH’s athletic director at the time, just didn’t have the heart to place Montgomery and his family into that situation. Sheriff passed on the coach he knew was the best among the finalist, an act that he — correctly — hoped would preserve Montgomery’s career ascension. UH hired Frank Arnold, who lasted two years. Montgomery eventually would coach Stanford for 18 seasons before being hired by the Warriors — the Golden State Warriors.

Winning in the eyes of many in society today trumps doing what is morally and ethically right. Some see those traits as being old fashioned and thus a hindrance to one’s getting ahead.

I think it’s one thing to get a player from the East to commit; it’s another to get him to stay. Kirkwood really wanted to go back there. I thought Kwamane Bowens made a mistake in leaving. He didn’t get much of a shot in JC. He’s looking for a school now. He would have three to play three, but it’s still tougher to go the JC route.

Wow, interesting reading about Mike Montgomery and Stan Sheriff. Back then I wondered why Montgomery was not the coach selected to lead the rainbow men.

Enough already, about the Deflate Gate. I am really shocked about how the sports world and national media has freaked out about the PSI in the footballs used in a football game. In my lifetime, I do not recall if there has been a more moronic sports story in the national sports media. I am stunned that anyone even cares about this. Because sports fans have been forced to listen to this stupid story, I think the Patriots should be ruthlessly punished. Does the sports media know that the biggest football game of the year will be played this coming Sunday? Who knew that the NFL could capture the national attention just by deflating a few footballs?
Read recently where Bowens was a Texas State commit. I’m not convinced he would have gotten any more playing time here anyway. Don’t know who Texas State is but maybe he finds his nitch at that school. Good luck to him.

Has there been any studies? The reason I bring this up is because some of the posters here assume that a 2 year lay off saps the ability of a returning player and therefore why is Chow taking a chance on these players.
Does the LDS tie in with BYU hurt the team with respect to the many of their players going on 2 year missions? I don’t think so. Historically BYU has done well.
Give Chow credit. He has seen first hand (4 decades at BYU) the impact that returning mission players contribute to his teams. As a head coach now at Hawaii do you think if he saw that returning mission players to his (then) BYU teams were turning out ineffective he would take this knowledge and open the door to LDS players returning from missions to his Hawaii team? No. I don’t this so. Read line one of this paragraph (again).
Wouldn’t having older, more (life) experienced, more mature players, be a plus, not hurts Hawaii?
Two LDS players currently are mid-year transfers.
The signees are wide receiver Dylan Collie (5-10, 173) and defensive lineman Sione Kauhi (6-6, 245). Both had multiple PAC-12 offers. Their upsides are great.
Collie has the pedigree (2 brothers played at BYU; his father played in the NFL) and Kuahi had scholarship offers as early as his sophomore year in high school.
One thing that can be said is that amongst any speculation in regards to returning LDS players is that why knock them down before they even have a chance. I would think every case is different just like any recruit in general-some pan out, some don’t. Personally I like what Chow is doing by opening the door to LDS players returning from mission. This is all new. These are seeds that he planted… where imo the rewards are greater than the risk (look at BYU’s model).

I was told by a Bishop of the LDS that a person going on a mission has to dedicate 100% of his effort to the mission
thus, there is NO time to train or keep in shape – yet, Zwahlen said he spent the last year taking time to improve his “physical” status
with BYU, they had so many coming off mission that it did not really affect the team as those ahead of them allowed them 2 years to train and get in shape

The strength of any good football team starts with:
1) Effective and stable QB
2) The Offensive Line
3) The Defensive Line
Therein lies the main reasons why Hawaii has not been successful in winning more games. There are other reasons too, but the core is in the 2 forward walls and the leader, the QB. So, who is going to be the leader this coming fall?

Errybody’s been jumpy for a while. After Sunday, it’s withdrawals until fall.
49. Only in some last minute cases such as Donyeh Patterson last year. I believe he filled a scholarship spot on signing day without taking a visit. Other than that, most official offers made do involve a home visit and/or an official recruiting visit to the campus. During the summer, 100s of unofficial offers are made that get yanked at some point.
Example: Utah St: press will say Cronk decommitted to Hawaii and signs with Utah St.
Hawaii: press will say Hawaii went another direction and didn’t offer a visit and although was offered early on, decided to part ways.
Depending who you want to believe, offers that are claimed are false more times than not.

BYU allowing missions is not doen for football advantages or reasons. They do it because they are an LDS school. One of their head coaches pointed this out saying he would not allow church missions if he could, but he had to at BYU (this was when the church had an older age requirement so players entered school before their missions). I think religon plays a role in this for Chow since he is LDS. But recruits have about a 50% chance to contribute during their 4 years, so maybe if 50% of returning mission kids contribute, then we come out even.
Interesting somewhat—comments in some cases. What is important is what happens on Wednesday and the days that follow. I for one think when the dust settles the Warriors will be in a better place. Will it be enough for 7 or more wins? I gotta think so. Go Warriors!!!!
So much yapping here about potential recruits when all you need to know is the FACT that Chow is only capable of securing commitments from marginal JC players, transfers who were riding the bench at other D1 schools with only a year or two of eligibility left, and returning missionaries passed over by the Utah schools. No athleticism and no speed, just like the last 3 years under Chow. Why do some think it’ll somehow magically get better?

It is sad to watch Tiger play golf. I don’t know if he will ever recapture his magic. I was horrified to see him chip the ball. I never thought I would chip better than him, ever, but right now I don’t know. I hope he’s not playing golf like Ian Baker Finch. A former British Open, Finch soon after lost his game and after that he couldn’t break par. He eventually quit the tour, washed up, and is now a commentator. Tiger is still too young, and he looks fine physically, but mentally as it pertains to hitting the golf ball all kinds of shots he’s a lost soul. But, I give him a lot of credit. As frustrated as he is, he still have a sense of humor. He said he showed up to his post interview after shooting 82 because he didn’t want to get fined. I hope he gets it together soon. Golf and the PGA needs Tiger to do well.
Ratings wise, Borden isn’t even rated….
But I have a feeling he might be the gem if/when he comes back from his mission. I hope Naeole can convince him not to go on his mission. I think he is one of those really good athletes that once he fills out, has NFL upside. I may be getting way ahead of myself but I do think the only thing keeping him from being a big time recruit was that he is a late bloomer as far as mass goes. Once he gets close to 300 pounds, skies the limit.

He is a “plant” to screw UH athletics, never hire anyone with no connection to the islands or west coast. “Big Ten”, “the Ohio St”, yeh right….also changing UH game vs. Colorado to Thursday so he can go to Ohio couple days earlier, never heard of having to prepare extra days to travel…like if it’s going to help…
Last time I checked, Hawaii’s RPI is around 196. They weren’t going to be an at-large selection for the NCAA or NIT anyway. We can only hope that if there is a post-season ban, it’s only for this season.
I would rather have the post-season ban instead of a reduction in scholarships.

I have no illusions about coach Chow’s performance. It has been bad. I have not made any commentary about our current recruiting class. So I don’t see the factual basis of your allegation. What always worried me was the APR. I, to this day, cannot understand how we complied with the APR with all those transferring players.

Sure he may be a great guy and all but that wouldn’t change the fact that he’s screwing the program to the ground. Of course we haven’t heard everything but it really does not look good.
I think what will happen is Taylor will be released, sanctions will be levied, followed by a mass exodus of players that will eventually result in a poor APR rating.
Got to sympathize with the new coaching staff, players and existing fans because it may take years to get the program back on track and headed in the right direction.
My only advice when that time comes is patience.
