Family matters

While Kawika Borden awaits word on whether he gets a sixth UH season and Iolani senior Kamuela Borden prepares to sign with UH before going on a church mission, a third Borden brother projects to play for the Warriors this season.

Noah Borden, who played basketball and football at Kamehameha, has served a church mission in Las Vegas the past two years. His mission ends in March, and tentative plans call for him to join the Warriors as a walk-on.

Noah Borden reportedly is 6-1 and about 215 pounds. He was used as an outside linebacker and long-snapper at Kamehameha.

Have watched Kamuela play basketball this season for Iolani and he looks like he’s getting bigger all the time. Kid is put together and he looks like a college DE right now. Been hearing from the Iolani ohana that the DL may be his future when he returns from his mission.

  2. haka January 29, 2015 8:23 am

    Welcome Noah! Borden Warriors all!

  3. tom January 29, 2015 8:32 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

  4. al January 29, 2015 8:36 am

    Good morning Tom.

I thought kamuela was going to be groomed as a LT?

  5. DaPunchbowl Kid January 29, 2015 8:37 am

    Welcome to the Warriors, Noah!

    Good morning Tom and Turfwar!

  6. jeezy33 January 29, 2015 8:57 am

    3. Linemen taking 2 years off can always go either way. Never know how they gonna grow.

  7. jeezy33 January 29, 2015 8:58 am

Unga went from 6-3 215 LB, to 6-5 however many pound DE, to TE. those Polys grow like crazy sometimes..

  8. Marleysdad January 29, 2015 9:01 am

Would be nice for his parents if he put off his mission so mom & dad could watch all 3 sons play together for one season.

  9. jeezy33 January 29, 2015 9:03 am

Or cancel mission and get to NFL and give back by being a role model. Manti was smart..

  10. Da Punchbowl Kid January 29, 2015 9:15 am

Okay jeezy – waiting to see any news on the recruiting front, today before I get back to work. Anything shakin’?

    Wut about you al? Anything?

  11. jeezy33 January 29, 2015 9:30 am

    9. Nothing that hasn’t been put out yet. I don’t think there is much room for new recruits so I wouldn’t expect any new surprises.

  12. kev-1 January 29, 2015 9:32 am

It’s definitely a gamble with mission kids. I get it. Often times, however, there is a lot of pressure on these young men to go on the missions even though they want to play ball. Not all, but some feel forced. Then again, I respect those that feel like the mission comes first.

In terms of football ability, for the level of talent that we compete for, it is a complete crap shoot. You don’t often read about a 4/5 star recruit going on a mission.

  13. seewhy January 29, 2015 9:36 am

It would be something to see all 3 Borden brothers play this coming season.

  14. jeezy33 January 29, 2015 9:44 am

    12. On team vs playing is completely different though. Walk on would be lucky to suit up. Kamuela most likely redshirts anyway. So the scenario isn’t as sweet as it sounds.

  15. islandman January 29, 2015 9:46 am

Stephen said on radio today that the new DC could be named in a couple of weeks and could be someone who has had experience at UH (not Rich M). i think he said Norm was doing interviews on the mainland.

Anyone have a crystal ball as to who it will be and what kind of defense he runs ?

  16. ai-eee-soos January 29, 2015 9:50 am

    # 14.

I hope Rich Ellerson is in the mix.

  17. BigWave96744 January 29, 2015 9:52 am

Those Borden kids are like the Satele and Higgins ohana.

Borden’s Sister (Anika) was a former Rainbow Wahine Track & Field Athlete and another Sister (Makana) played basketball for BYUH

  18. mytake January 29, 2015 10:02 am

I give Rich Ellerson the odds on favorite.

  19. seewhy January 29, 2015 10:12 am

You guys know anything about Cameron Hayes? According to ESPN recruiting, he committed to UH on Tuesday.

  20. hitman January 29, 2015 10:27 am

aloha and good morning all !! who going to be DC > ? Rich Ellerson, dick tommy?,bob wagner?

  21. graham January 29, 2015 10:32 am

    It is Ellerson I believe

  22. graham January 29, 2015 10:33 am

Ellerson is a good hire, not flashy but a solid coach. I wonder if he is a good recruiter

  23. tom January 29, 2015 10:33 am

#18 Cameron Hayea is 5’11”, class of 2015 (Junipero Serra HS) and plays either CB or WR.

  24. tom January 29, 2015 10:35 am

#18 Cameron HAYES is a senior at Junipero Serra HS, 5’11” 170+ pounds and plays either CB or WR.

  25. seewhy January 29, 2015 10:35 am

    RE: #22

Thanks Tom. It will be interesting to see where they put him.

  26. letsgowarriors January 29, 2015 10:41 am

Kamuela Borden definitely looks like a DL and not a OL, imo.

  27. jeezy33 January 29, 2015 10:56 am

    18. Little late there… ST addressed this the other day

  28. islandman January 29, 2015 11:03 am

    27. jeezy– What did ST say ? i missed it the other day.

  29. NorthShoreFan January 29, 2015 11:16 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.
It would be good to see a “born and raised” in Hawaii offensive line.

  30. NorthShoreFan January 29, 2015 11:19 am

    aha..mistype addy…

  31. NorthShoreFan January 29, 2015 11:23 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos..bootiful day.
it would be great to see an “all Hawaiian” offensive line.

dang computer getting “stoopid”..got to get one new one..

  32. al January 29, 2015 11:30 am

ummm. yah just go back to the other days post.
just read between the lines a.k.a. the subliminal message

  33. al January 29, 2015 11:31 am

Kamuela borden…just saying what the little birdie told me. he’s bigger than me so I listen.

  34. al January 29, 2015 11:37 am

it is true we have a lot of recruits coming in tomorrow. many of whom are the preferred recruits and need to reaffirm their pledges. a couple that need some friendly persuasion to commit.

till then the ones with contingent offers must wait until Feb 4th after the dust settles. (19…get it?)

  35. BigWave96744 January 29, 2015 11:41 am

Don’t Be surprised if Vaevae Tata is candidate for DB coach
    http://www.vucommodores.com/m/sports/m-footbl/mtt/vavae_tata_883009.html
Was on the UCLA staff with Chow, would have been at Vandy last year but a DUI nixed that

  36. BigWave96744 January 29, 2015 11:43 am

Other DB coaches I could see with Hawaii ties
Rich Miano, Abraham Elimimian (former SMU grad asst), Reggie Torres (Punahou Asst Coach ), Richard Torres (Kahuku Asst coach), Spencer Smith (Kell HS LB coach )

  37. SteveM January 29, 2015 11:46 am

    Good morning everyone!

Annual drama unfolds in the home stretch for LOI day… but a DC signing too?

  38. BigWave96744 January 29, 2015 11:47 am

Keith Bhonapha (Washington), Kim McCloud (Baylor) are set at their resp jobs

  39. BigWave96744 January 29, 2015 11:49 am

Don’t think Brian Cabral would leave his AHC/DC position at Indiana St

  40. Inyoface January 29, 2015 11:49 am

    Let’s go Pats!

  41. Warbow January 29, 2015 11:54 am

    tweet tweet…Mike Tuiasosopo.

  42. Maddog50 January 29, 2015 12:04 pm

Here is to a great finale on recruiting. Regarding OL I will be glad to have a solid productive group homegrown or not, just big and dominant one end to the other. Solid group of youngsters with Ben C and some help at tackle. Gimme some size, temper and attitude. Same for DL. LB and Db look promising. Now get the staff and win!!!!

  43. islandman January 29, 2015 12:12 pm

    41. For DC ? He doesn’t have any UH experience, i think, which is what the next DC apparently will have. Also, it is won’t be Rich M, the birdie said .

  44. BigWave96744 January 29, 2015 12:12 pm

Why would Mike Tuiasosopo leave UCLA?

  45. Shoko January 29, 2015 12:14 pm

I suppose Ellerson is a strong possibility to take the DC position. He’s presently unemployed but not sure if ready to get back into coaching.

  46. A-House January 29, 2015 12:23 pm

    BigWave 96744:

maybe, just maybe, al’s little birdie told him that Ulu-Perry will sign with UH?

nah, just getting my fingers nimble to start typing letters.

  47. bowwar January 29, 2015 12:30 pm

IF Ellerson is the new DC, that would be a HUGE get for the Warriors…I doubt it, but we can always dream of having him as DC.

  48. bowwar January 29, 2015 12:31 pm

Also, no news on Kickers or Punters…Is Holmes a commit?

  49. ai-eee-soos January 29, 2015 12:33 pm

Anyone you know that wants a HC job?

Here’s one to start building your resume’.

San Bernardino Valley (CC – CA): Sources tell us that San Bernardino has posted their head coaching position.

  50. BigFan January 29, 2015 1:40 pm

I thought I read somewhere that local kid, Trifonovich was up for the kicker position. He’s the son of David Trifonovich, local soccer player.

  51. BigFan January 29, 2015 1:46 pm

Kinda interesting to read the interaction of regular posters/lurkers and people just seeking information instantly. These people are not regulars so they haven’t read prior blogs or are just lazy to google information. Do we need someone who is the designated responder to all these people? Maybe not. Just leave it to others if they feel like answering?

  52. BigWave96744 January 29, 2015 2:27 pm

Good news for the day, Max Broman returning this spring
    http://www.sportshawaii.com/sh/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=46738

  53. Shoko January 29, 2015 2:45 pm

    Ah, the Sandman returns.

Broman might be a good replacement for Joey if he put on some solid weight.

  54. Shoko January 29, 2015 2:48 pm

Thought I read that guy, John Lenzie Creech, is still in prison serving time.

  55. Warbow January 29, 2015 2:50 pm

    43..UH or Hawaii ties?

    44..For a better paying job?

  56. Shoko January 29, 2015 2:51 pm

Anyway, I’ll venture to guess that they found Creech’s DNA on Smiths body. RIP, Gavin.

  57. Trunks420 January 29, 2015 2:58 pm

Hawaii Needs him as much as he needs Hawaii

  58. Inyoface January 29, 2015 3:00 pm

The guy who wrote this article predicted the record perfectly before the 2014 season.

    http://www.kaleo.org/special_issue_welcomeback/football-preview/article_f2023cf4-2c31-11e4-b65d-001a4bcf6878.html

  59. Shoko January 29, 2015 3:16 pm

    60. Must admit the time stamp on the story is interesting. That was right after the Colorado State game where the Warriors were sitting on a 2-8 record with San Jose State and UNLV next. Not saying he edited his prediction but…

    “Posted: Monday, August 25, 2014 5:00 am | Updated: 4:32 pm, Tue Nov 11, 2014.”

  60. oldyobo January 29, 2015 3:19 pm

Marginal JC players, disgruntled or benchwarmers from other Div.1 programs seeking a chance at starting in final year of eligibility, returning missionaries, That’s all we get for recruiting news. Not ONE of Chow’s recruits from the last 3 years have made any impact towards winning. Unlikely any recruits for this year will reverse that trend. No athleticism, total lack of decent skill players with speed. Folks, gear up for another disastrous season!

  61. Boolakanaka January 29, 2015 3:28 pm

Jeezy, I saw Al Noga come in at about 217/218 or so, boom, one year later Bruddha is 255 plus, and faster than he was the previous fall.

  62. Boolakanaka January 29, 2015 3:34 pm

Bigwave– the original UH family that also needs to included is the palakikos. Nathan and sista were hella athletes. I think I shared my story of coming back to UH and the seeing Nathan Fletcher, who was player of the year as a DB, first time I saw him on Cooke field he was like 275… I almost fainted.

  63. jimmy the lock January 29, 2015 3:37 pm

No need be a football player to put on poundage. Just let mother nature do her job.

  64. jeezy33 January 29, 2015 4:04 pm

    63. I don’t know Borden very well but he looks like the type of kid that is going to fill out a lot in 2 years. Hopefully good weight. Hopefully comes back a DL.

  65. NotNasti January 29, 2015 4:23 pm

OldYobo: Let’s just say, for argument’s sake, that UH does well next season, say 7 wins and a bowl victory? Would you be upset that they did well, or would you be cheering them on like the rest of us? Do you have that capability in that stone cold heart of yours? Darkness is not good for the soul.

  66. Rodney January 29, 2015 4:24 pm

Any DL recruits visiting this weekend.
I think next year we only have
    Penitito,Kenndy,Shawley,Koloamangi
    Gifford and Rassmussen
    Did I miss anyone?

  67. kapakahi January 29, 2015 4:41 pm

    #64. @boolakanaka,

In HS, had the unfortunate experience of trying to block big Nate #41 on kick-off return.

Got pancaked by big Nate……as well as run over by QB Tupu Siliga and RBs James Holt, Kenneth Paredes, and Feleti Brown…….when HC Larry Ginoza ran the wishbone.

    Ahh…..the memories!

  68. kapakahi January 29, 2015 4:42 pm

    #68,

    Kauhi…..already enrolled.

  69. oldyobo January 29, 2015 4:46 pm

#67, me and my buddies who are long time season ticket holders, will be jumping for joy if UH football has a winning season again. Unlike you though, we don’t smoke any strange stuff and we are grounded in reality. Furthermore, didn’t know stating facts can be misconstrued as being cold. If I have stated anything in my post that’s not factual, please feel free to provide the facts as you see it.

  70. Boolakanaka January 29, 2015 5:04 pm

Kapakahi–damn, I haven’t heard Feleti Browns name in 30 years–brings back memories. Your story reminds of being a soph and playing Farrington….peter Tomas , Matt Karrati, ulufale inc…….I was literally a boy among men.

  71. tofuzuke January 29, 2015 6:00 pm

Go Bows!! UH basketball 50-34 USUN, half time streaming http://www.bigwest.org

  72. NotNasti January 29, 2015 6:41 pm

OldYobo: Nice to hear that you are a season ticket holder, as I am. With your disposition and impression on the ability of the athletes, however, neither I nor the people in my section (player’s families) would enjoy your company.

  73. Kaiks January 29, 2015 8:18 pm

Nothing being said about changing the UH offense to get more production. Wouldn’t be surprised if a big change is announced soon.

  74. kapakahi January 29, 2015 9:39 pm

JMHO but woulda been nice if UH had the scholies to recruit this HS RB prospect…….

FORGOT WHO BUT YOU ARE CORRECT. NO 4/5 STAR PROSPECTS GO ON MISSIONS. AND WE NEED THEM NOW!!!

  76. Abunai January 30, 2015 4:14 am

On regards on the coaching positions…. IMO it shouldn’t matter if they have ties with the university of Hawaii. I notice being a local person myself we tend to stay within our own which is good because it reminds ourselves as Ohana. But in this situation I don’t think the coaches have to have any ties to UH. I just want a winning program with local coaches or not. It doesn’t really matter if they are local or not. Just Win!! That’s all that matters. Now when I say just win. I mean win the right way also. No cheating or anything bad for school. We need to stop looking into the past and move forward.

  77. tempmanoa January 30, 2015 5:16 am

If it is Ellerson, that would be great. He runs an “old” defense– the double eagle double flex that he and Dick Tomey made famous at Arizona as the Desert Swarm and that he used at Army. But the the Swarm favors quicker and faster players and not giants, so it fits us and guys like Tuimasaeli and the kinds of players we can recruit.
