JC o-tackle commits

The Warriors received a commitment from Fullerton College offensive tackle Matt “Moose” Norman. He joins UH tomorrow.

Here’s our on-line story: UH gets O-lineman

* * * * *

Football-team members insist they go on business trips, not road trips.

The Warriors, though, try to mix business with education. In Utah, they ate Brazilian cuisine. In Houston, they toured NASA. And in 2013, they made two tours of the D.C. area, including stops at the Capitol and memorial exhibits. One of the most impactful was the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. It was there where the players read, etched in marble, King’s words that are often repeated in inspirational talks:

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

MLK2

On this day, King’s teachings are as relevant today.

Any new commits, de-commits, coaches coming or coaches going?

  4. BigWave96744 January 19, 2015 9:45 am

During this spring, if bad new outweighs the good news (as what’s been happening in the past few weeks) expect season ticket sales to plummet to an all-time low.

  5. Les January 19, 2015 9:50 am

Martin Luther King was a great man. Through all his trails and tribulations he always looked to the positive. As this relates to our athletic program and the school I would hope we do the same. All the trash talking does is take us deeper into oblivion. Why people cannot understand that is beyond me.

  6. letsgowarriors January 19, 2015 9:54 am

i hope the next OC is more open to running 4 wide formations. and the next DC runs a more hybrid 3-4 like Aranda vs. the 3-4 Clune ran.

  7. azwarrior22 January 19, 2015 10:04 am

How bout some news about this first recruiting weekend and what Chow plans to do for the coaching voids???

  8. Old School Dave January 19, 2015 10:17 am

    Well said, Stephen and Les.

Happy Martin Luther King Day to all.

  9. BigWave96744 January 19, 2015 10:22 am

Waiting til March or after to fill the coaching vacancies, OC, DC, DB is a disaster waiting to happen. But then when you have an AD who doesn’t give a rip about the program, there is no pressure on the coach step it up

  10. letsgowarriors January 19, 2015 10:23 am

majority of the things chow has done since coming here have been disasters.

  11. gobows January 19, 2015 10:32 am

who will coach the offensive line. the center was called for 27 pre-snap penalties. thats freakin terrible.

  12. PONO January 19, 2015 10:37 am

Its been reported earlier that although Cronk was a soft commit he is officially decommitted and is likely following Clune to USU. I think Jeezy also mentioned that Woo is another commit that is considering USU as well.

  13. jeezy33 January 19, 2015 10:53 am

11 Both are scheduled to visit the 30th but the coaches are known to cancel trips unless kids are committed… Then after, Chow will say they brought in 27 kids for visits and 25 committed… to make it seem they got all the guys they want… but in reality, we avoid free trips at all costs…

  14. A-House January 19, 2015 10:53 am

when it’s time to crow, I crow
when it’s time to sing, I sing
when it’s time to monku, I monku
    just let me be me!

at dis time, there is nothing to crow about for the UH football team – yes, there are verbals, but it means nothing until the “fat lady sings” and that is LOI day – now, is it 2/3 or 2/4? hope UH did not weigh heavily on counting Cronk or Woo

appears the 49ers are moving backward if they are seriously considering Lane Kiffin as their OC – me, I’m a 49er fan, but who the heck is the new HC name; formerly, the DL coach? now that Fangio has also bolted, who will the new HC
name as his DC? appears 49er management will mirco-manage and this is a sure sign of disaster

back to UH – with a very lame duck AD who appears to be “resting” and collecting a paycheck and a chancellor who sees no reason to immediately seek a replacement, it does not bode well for UH sports

  15. A-House January 19, 2015 10:59 am

visits: I would not spend a dime on someone who de-committed and commits to another school

don’t be a dreamer and spend $$$ on some player who has no intention of signing with UH with the real outside hope that he will sign on NLI day – yes, things happen, but you’re “not in Kansas” any more!!!

  16. Inyoface January 19, 2015 11:05 am

We’ll all be complaining until we win a bowl game. No one was happy with Mac being winless in bowl games at the time. Of course now when we look at Mac’s years it seemed like the last glory years we’ve had but we still wanted more. Chow needs a bowl game and a win, I think, in order for him to stay.

  17. A-House January 19, 2015 11:11 am

anyone on this blog familiar with how UH sets up its recruiting board and at what point a name is deleted and another added? I will presume that the names are setup with #1 choice first.

or, is it with a bunch of names on the board under a certain position? do they have a “preferred walk-on” list

if the walk-ons contribute more that scholarship players, then someone made a mistake on who should get the scholarship

“heart”, willingness is not an easy character to judge, but surely there must be signs that a coach can look for to make that call.

  18. A-House January 19, 2015 11:16 am

    “Rambling Rose, Rambling Rose”
Why you wander, no one knows”

did you know that Nat King Cole was only one of 3 singers in the USA with perfect pitch? Mel Thorme was another and no idea who was the 3rd.

  19. kapakahi January 19, 2015 11:43 am

Being a Cali guy probably made it easier for OT Matt Norman to pick Hawaii over Idaho & New Mexico (his other scholie offers)…..

Nice frame…..but definitely need to gain some bulk…..

  20. st. anthony trojan January 19, 2015 11:51 am

Me thought Derek Tatsuno…had a good ‘pitch’ also…maybe he was the 3rd ?? he he

  21. Shoko January 19, 2015 11:51 am

An O-line player that is 6 feet 6 and about 250 pounds from Fullerton College that’s called Moose!

  22. jeezy33 January 19, 2015 12:00 pm

Nice pick up. But just a year too late. I was constantly saying we needed to recruit OTs last year and the year before. Hopefully he redshirts and next coaching staff has a good Left Tackle for 2 years.

  23. PONO January 19, 2015 12:01 pm

Moose looks like a definite project just like the Kolomatongi’s. Big frame but needs at least 30-40lbs to be able to compete. Not an immediate impact guy like we need in the trenches.

  24. jeezy33 January 19, 2015 12:01 pm

Same goes for Nose Tackles. Should have been a priority last year.

  25. Rodney January 19, 2015 12:05 pm

Moose looks athletic.Bet he could be used for the Tackle
Eligible pass play.Welcome to Hawaii moose.

  26. kapakahi January 19, 2015 12:07 pm

Gotta believe that current Rainbow Warrior LB Simon Poti is contributing somehow….some way…..to these recent commits from his former Fullerton College Hornet teammates (Fieeki & Norman)……

Also probably doesn’t hurt to have former UH Rainbow DB Phil Austin on the Fullerton College Hornet football coaching staff too….

Maybe that might influence Hornet CB/KR Marnez Ogletree to pick UH……over other MWC schools (Boise State, Fresno State, and Utah State)……
    http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2927331/highlights/174475375

  27. PONO January 19, 2015 12:09 pm

Jeezy isn’t he a 4 to play 3 guy since he was a qualifier out of HS?

  28. hatakeman January 19, 2015 12:13 pm

Christian Cronk and Tommy Woo, reportedly, have de-committed. Bummers.

  29. jeezy33 January 19, 2015 12:15 pm

    Grading out Hawaii’s recruiting classes:
2012: – Hawaii hit on 8 impact players out of 20 recruits with 0 all stars. Highlighted by Ben Clarke, Dejon Allen, and JGW as the top guys.

2013 – Hawaii hit on 7 for 27 on impact players. 1 potential star in Kenndy Tulimaseallii and highlighted by Trayvon, Gener, and Tupai

I left the Mission kids out but our classes have been quite disappointing. Especially at positions of key importance. Surprisingly Norm was able to land better players in his 1st class without a full year to recruit vs his 2nd class. Technially Clarke was a Mack recruit and Dejon and JGW were both being pursued by Hawaii by prior coaching staff as well. Hopefully we can finish strong and not settle on plan C type guys

  30. jeezy33 January 19, 2015 12:16 pm

    27. I think he played as a FR. so 3 for 2 kid.

  31. jeezy33 January 19, 2015 12:17 pm

    26. Or it could be Hawaii is simply the best/ only FBS offer??

  32. Hapaguy January 19, 2015 12:19 pm

Yeah Christian Cronk has been posting pics (flashing the shaka) on Facebook of him and Tommy Woo at Utah State with comments like “having a blast here” etc…then yesterday he posted that he has officially de-committed from UH. Him and Tommy need to stop posing flashing the shaka if they aren’t coming to UH…lol….

  33. kapakahi January 19, 2015 12:23 pm

    #31,

Per #18, his other FBS offers……before the UH offer…..were supposedly from Idaho Vandals & fellow MWC New Mexico……not exactly comparable to SoCal weather.

  34. PONO January 19, 2015 12:25 pm

I was just in Salt Lake City and I dont know how you can say you’re having fun in the freezing cold unless you are an avid skiier/snowboarder. Doing daily things is so much worse in the snow and cold.

  35. Old School Dave January 19, 2015 12:28 pm

I remember a local player back in the 80s from Roosevelt High, a somewhat undersized lineman, who was the last one to be offered a scholarship in his recruiting class, with UH being his only D-I offer. His name was Shawn Ching (Alivado at the time). Ching turned out to become a pretty good player earning All-WAC honors (that’s the old WAC).

  36. jeezy33 January 19, 2015 12:29 pm

    33. The schools you named are the reason I am saying Hawaii is probably just the best option considering New Mexico is pretty bad for the most part and Idaho is Idaho. I don’t think we had to compete with any quality programs for these guys…

Seems like not long ago where we would be beating out Utah for a Ryan Mouton and good schools for quality studs.

  37. Maddo50 January 19, 2015 12:35 pm

Welcome Moose Norman. He does need some bulk but 3 different weights at 3 different sights. Mac schools at top level FBS schools eat these guys up and they are productive. I see him at close to 300 by fall good feet and motor I”ll take it. Welcome Mr. Norman!!!! Go Warriors!!!!! Steven keep the info comin u know I check constantly!!!!!!!

  38. kapakahi January 19, 2015 12:35 pm

    #33,

    Gotta agree!

Neither Idaho or New Mexico would be destination programs…….nor destination states to live……compared to Hawaii.

  39. oldyobo January 19, 2015 12:45 pm

Another marginal player unlikely to make much impact – 6’6 and only 250 for the O-line? Sounds more like a project for defensive end. So far, only recruits Chow has been able to secure for this year are a few marginal JCs, transfers from other schools hoping to start with only a year left in eligibility, and returning missionaries. His big boast of building the program with talented freshmen is now nothing but fantasy, just like him boasting about “chasing championships”. Where’s the skill players with speed and athleticism? Any hope of a better season is quickly disappearing.

  40. oldyobo January 19, 2015 12:48 pm

Les, is it true you’re the son-in-law of Chow?

  41. Ipu Man January 19, 2015 12:53 pm

Hope all the would be players for UH remember the Green Bay
Packer mistakes and play to win. Go Bows!

  42. Shoko January 19, 2015 12:58 pm

Would Chow put Norman at tight end if he can’t gain the weight and keep it on?

  43. el burro sabio January 19, 2015 1:05 pm

Different point of view in Alabama – the faculty senate at UAB is not happy with the decision to drop football.

    Welcome to Loser Country.!!

  45. jeezy33 January 19, 2015 1:14 pm

    38. Tall and long having to add weight is better than tall and over weight having to lose. Can’t teach long arms and light footwork… but you can work hard in weight room and get stronger… Norman probably needs to redshirt but that’s not a bad thing.

  46. letsgowarriors January 19, 2015 1:31 pm

the positive is Norman is coming now vs. in the summer/fall camp. he gets the current offseason training, followed by spring practice and then another offseason training cycle before entering fall camp.

    46. No disrespect to Daronte Jones but the caliber of corners we been targeting after he left has been a big upgrade over Jones. Clemson bounce back would be nice to have… 1st team in competitive JC conference. Jayshawn Lowe also All American DB we targeting. Much better than Caesar Fermin and other from past classes. Now if we can land them, great news.. I wonder who is recruiting these corners.

  50. kapakahi January 19, 2015 2:04 pm

    #48.

    j33,

What about Fullerton College CB/KR prospect Marnez Ogletree……who has scholie offers from MWC schools (Boise State, Fresno State, and Utah State)……as well as Big-10 Indiana…..who played very competitively this past season against The Ohio State University?

    http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2927331/highlights/174475375

  51. jeezy33 January 19, 2015 2:08 pm

    49. He also looks good but I haven’t heard of Hawaii being in the mix for him. If Hawaii were to land Lowe and Davis, Wouldn’t be surprised if Nequan moves to strictly Nickel. Doesn’t have the speed to be a good MWC corner. Would do well at Nickel I think and allow him to blitz like they did with DeMattei. Nelson and Mayo should get more run at CB I think.

  52. Maddog50 January 19, 2015 2:12 pm

Welcome Mr Norman. Got 3 different weights from 3 different sights. Easy to see 290 to 300 by fall. Good feet a stays on block/finishes. Need more height so I like it. Got a sniff from good programs and two offers. Upper tier Mac cools scoop these guys up. I like it. Keep the info coming. Regarding the so called de commits it ain’t over till it’s over. Go Warriors!!!!

  53. letsgowarriors January 19, 2015 2:25 pm

what does Chow tell recruits when they ask him questions like what type of defense are we going to run? how do i fit into the defensive scheme?

what players has your defensive coaches developed….

  54. st. anthony trojan January 19, 2015 2:57 pm

letsgowarriors…ur getting to technical….he will ask upper campus to answer that one…he he he

  55. Bryson January 19, 2015 3:31 pm

I believe Jayshawn Lowe will be attending UH based on the Tweets between him and Ikaika

  56. Inyoface January 19, 2015 3:34 pm

#32 Everyone seems to flash the shaka sign now that aren’t from Hawaii.

  57. Fei Jai January 19, 2015 3:46 pm

    Is norm even here?

Where in the world is norm “the winner” chow?

  58. Fei Jai January 19, 2015 3:48 pm

    Norm sighting.

Saw him at the Palm reader at international market place. He was asking palm reader how team would do this year. (Joke, of course).

  59. Rodney January 19, 2015 3:57 pm

NC in Cali looking for more SC type players
and looking for a surprise DC.
    Welcome new warriors !!

  60. mctruck January 19, 2015 4:23 pm

    #56, I see he’s due for a visit/look-see, very shortly; ha,ha, couldn’t pass on this one.

  61. mctruck January 19, 2015 4:29 pm

what’s OL Normans’ 40-look like? yeh, he needs to put on more lbs., and hopefully UH’s strength coach if we haven’t lost him as well can help him in this area.

  62. Ipu Man January 19, 2015 4:34 pm

Chow just tells them to punch the shark in the nosed as it
    circles them to eat them.

  63. hatakeman January 19, 2015 6:08 pm

    PONO. Girls maybe?

  64. hatakeman January 19, 2015 6:14 pm

What about Mika Tafua, DE, Kamehameha? I see he is back on UH radar.

  65. jeezy33 January 19, 2015 6:26 pm

    63. Where u get that info?

  66. warriorsanddolphins January 19, 2015 7:10 pm

Jeezy, he’s the same guy that said Elu Aydon was back on our radar. We need to get locals Tristen Luziado, Ikaika Piceno and Ranan Mamiya.

  67. PONO January 19, 2015 8:38 pm

62, but its too cold for them to take off their clothes. No fun if they wearing five layers of sweaters and jackets.

  68. hitman January 19, 2015 9:34 pm

wow like this big boy !! got some size !! might be better on the other side of the line !! nose tackel maybe !! plug some holes !! keep it up size and speed!! coach should start thinking moving some of that qbs he got to defence side of the ball LB or FS

  69. champ January 19, 2015 10:16 pm

One more year of misery? “I cant stand it yeah yeah yeah!” recruits better be able to start ASAP! Rebuilding supposed to end in 2014. Payoff starts now I would say. Hurry Up!

  70. hitman January 19, 2015 11:45 pm

wow just went look the list at ESPN !! wow got really step it up!!

  71. Maddog50 January 20, 2015 6:01 am

The recruiting data and rankings on all of the sites are incomplete and incorrect. The transfers, LDS recruits don’t show among others. When it all shakes out it will be a full deck or more. Can’t help but think there will be a couple. Of big surprises that will have major impact. Go Warriors!!!!

  72. d1shima January 20, 2015 6:57 am

    Great Morning All!

    GO WARRIORS!

  73. PONO January 20, 2015 7:54 am
