Wallace suffers stroke

Stan Sheriff once told Riley Wallace he had the attributes of a football coach.

Wallace, at the time, was the Rainbows’ basketball coach.

It was an apt description for the feisty and competitive Wallace — and a comment he took as a compliment, which it was. We used to joke that “Old Yeller” was his favorite movie and his nickname.

Wallace is hospitalized in Las Vegas after suffering a stroke last night. We’re rooting for a speedy and full recovery for the feisty and competitive coach.

The middle is the man.

Taylor Averill is off to one of the best starts for a middle in the volleyball program’s history. At one point in Friday’s match, he was scoring at 90 percent.

Today, he won a national award.

    He’s defense right?

  6. jimmy the lock January 20, 2015 10:26 am

Promote the current defense coaches and refill.

  7. gigi-hawaii January 20, 2015 10:44 am

I hope Coach Wallace recovers from his stroke.
Makes me realize that we should never take good health for granted.

  8. Shoko January 20, 2015 10:48 am

    Speedy recovery, Coach!

  9. SteveM January 20, 2015 10:50 am

    Good morning everyone!

Best wishes for a full recovery to Coach Wallace!

  10. Shoko January 20, 2015 10:52 am

I can almost imagine Pacquiao calling Mayweather out well into his 60’s.

    Just do it already!!

  11. Pete Jek January 20, 2015 11:17 am

Am I the only one panicking about the vacancies on the coaching staff?

  12. PONO January 20, 2015 11:21 am

Hoping for a speedy recovery coach wallace.

  13. graham January 20, 2015 11:24 am

Get well Coach Wallace. Are there any candidates for the DC or DB jobs? I have heard some names but they sound like rumors. It would be good to get someone before NLI day.

  14. Old School Dave January 20, 2015 11:32 am

    Brian Cabral, by any chance?

    Speedy recovery to Coach Wallace.

  15. jimmy the lock January 20, 2015 11:40 am

Panic? No worry, UH likes challenges.

  16. graham January 20, 2015 11:48 am

Cabral would be interesting. He was always able to recruit Hawaii while he was at Colorado. My dream candidate would be Rocky Seto but he will be consider for the Seahawks DC when Quinn leaves for Atlanta. Maybe offer him the DC and head coaching job. Hey I can dream right?

  17. Tanman January 20, 2015 12:27 pm

We have a lot of needs!!! We need to fill them fast! Otherwise, no recruits will come.

  18. al January 20, 2015 12:35 pm

    Be well coach Riley.

  19. al January 20, 2015 12:36 pm

On another note…only one recruit visit this past weekend concerns me.

  20. hatakeman January 20, 2015 12:38 pm

Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery to Coach Wallace!

  21. Old School Dave January 20, 2015 12:39 pm

Rocky Seto would be great, but I don’t know how close he is with Chow, other than being on the USC staff together in the early 2000s. Seto is currently the safeties coach (Passing game coordinator). Just a few years ago, he was a quality control guy after being let go at USC by Lane Kiffin. Besides, Seto seems to be a Pete Carroll guy, who will follow him wherever he goes.

Interesting to hear Colin Cowherd on national radio mention the alleged kidnapping and misfortune of the Aussie golfter at the Sony Open. Cowherd is not buying the story, like many.

  22. st. anthony trojan January 20, 2015 12:43 pm

Not to worry …al…is the ex AD’s austerity program…less visits…less expenses…that is how to cut the millions in deficits….n with a winning record… comes much visits… not good for his vision of the program…

  23. bowwar January 20, 2015 12:44 pm

Get well to Riley…A good coach and very good person. Riley bled Rainbow and he’d also make a good AD.

I like Brian Cabral as a possible Associate HC/DC…Otherwise, I’d promote from within and look for candidates for vacant positions.

  24. hatakeman January 20, 2015 12:46 pm

No sense panic. It is what it is. Coach Chow said he will fill the two defensive coaching vacancies after NLI day. A decision that’s hard to understand, but maybe he thinks the remaining coaches can deliver a successful recruit class. We’ll see.

  25. seewhy January 20, 2015 12:51 pm

Best wishes to Coach Wallace. Get well soon!

  26. Shoko January 20, 2015 12:55 pm

No worries. Chow hired Aaron Price after the signing period and everything worked out just fine (for the first six months) during his short tenure.

  27. jeezy33 January 20, 2015 12:55 pm

    19. I think last weekend was a big in home visit week, and backloading the final 2 weeks to secure commitments late as possible…. Lot of guys are coming this weekend I am seeing. I prefer later visits…

  28. Shoko January 20, 2015 12:59 pm

Seriously, though, I’m not worried one bit. With all the changes this program undergone the past few years, I somewhat desensitized myself from coaching staff changes. I’m sure the vacancies will be filled eventually. After that we can scrutinize the hire like all die-hard fans do! 🙂

  29. Shoko January 20, 2015 1:00 pm

I just hope I don’t have to Wiki the name to find out about the new hire.

  30. jm2375 January 20, 2015 1:01 pm

Best wishes to Coach Riley on a speedy and full recovery!

Congrats to Mr. Averill on his POW award (again)!
For the 2nd straight week, the Warriors took out the #3 ranked team.
(BTW, how is it that Penn St is 0-4 and still ranked?????)

Be sure to come out to the SSC on Feb 4 & 6 and support the Warriors against the $poiled Children. It’ll be an epic battle between the Kahuanui cousins (Kupono Fey, UH and Micah Christensen, USC).

  31. hitman January 20, 2015 1:15 pm

wow 2nd one in less then 6 months that not good ! got take it E Z Riley wallace ! thanks for all you did for the UH basketball program time to enjoy life !!

any new names poping up for the AD job?

heard the new coaches coming from china twin brothers winsomesoon !! lol
chow is in hard spot to feel that 2 spots !!

  32. graham January 20, 2015 1:21 pm

Does anyone know Coach Chow’s logic for waiting till after signing day. If I were a defensive player I would definitely prefer to know who the DC is. For some reason, I still have faith in Chow. I really feel a bowl game could be possible if a couple of things can click. For some reason I really believe in Wittek

  33. jeezy33 January 20, 2015 1:23 pm

    32. That’s if Wittek can even beat out Woolsey

  34. st. anthony trojan January 20, 2015 1:49 pm

    HITMAN….U THE …DUDE…lol that one…

winsummo… probably was his cousin i guess huh… he he he

  35. Andrew January 20, 2015 1:53 pm

    33.

Zwahlen will be in the mix too

  36. Rodney January 20, 2015 1:58 pm

Whittex is the Qb we needed last yr and
will be this yrs QB It ain’t even a doubt.
I know you are just fooling,Jezzy
    Seen Whittex throw OMG!!!! Ikaika
has to be ready though injuries can
be apart of football. Practice hard ikaika

  37. Rodney January 20, 2015 1:59 pm

    Sorry Jeezy 33

  38. kapakahi January 20, 2015 2:07 pm

    Best wishes to Riley!

  39. al January 20, 2015 2:11 pm

Jeezy…while I hope it to be true, it still concerns me that only one guy was brought in.

  40. al January 20, 2015 2:13 pm

The state hiring processes would not allow for a quick hiring of a DC or any other staffer.

No panic…it is what it is.

  41. al January 20, 2015 2:14 pm

    Wittek

  42. Ipu Man January 20, 2015 2:15 pm

Here’s hoping Riley can come home and walk barefoot in
    Hawaii’s warm sand and ocean…soon. 🙂

    This side of the reef.

  43. kapakahi January 20, 2015 2:16 pm

    #27,

That does seem to be recruiting strategy this year……scheduling late visits in January to see which prospects are really interested in UH……

…….as opposed to earlier November & December visits…..which would probably include some prospects who weren’t seriously considering UH but just wanted the free trip to Hawaii……then spending January fending off the poachers on those early commits.

  44. kapakahi January 20, 2015 2:20 pm

    #27 & #39,

Although their respective overall recruiting approaches are completely different, it does seem as though NC now employing JJ’s strategy with regard to late-January official recruiting visits to UH.

  45. jeezy33 January 20, 2015 2:24 pm

    36. Far from a lock. Throwing a nice ball is hardly half the battle to playing QB. Still need to read defenses, have a pocket presence, make accurate throws into coverage, command offense, know the playbook, have chemistry with O line and WRs. Not easy to just come in and dominate… Especially when he didn’t do it at USC…. I think there will be an open competition. I don’t expect Zwahlen to be close to ready yet coming back from a mission.

  46. jimmy the lock January 20, 2015 2:25 pm

C’mon Rodnee, spell his name correctly.

  47. jimmy the lock January 20, 2015 2:26 pm

How many posters are posting during work time?

  48. Rodney January 20, 2015 2:27 pm

    Riley god speed!

  49. Rodney January 20, 2015 2:30 pm

    46 right on!! Lol!!

  50. jeezy33 January 20, 2015 2:30 pm

Last time a job was handed to a QB was when Graham was called the next Carson Palmer by the HC. Don’t want that happening again. Let all the QBs compete and see who comes out on top.

  51. jimmy the lock January 20, 2015 2:33 pm

Sometimes competition is a front. The savior is already chosen.

  52. Rodney January 20, 2015 2:38 pm

Im a Max fan. Agree with everything
Jeezy33 defines in a QB and
I just know in my heart that
Max Wittek is going to be our Tom Brady!
Seen him run scout offense last year a couple
of times and he was really special.
That’s what my eyes tell me.
Fans need to watch this guy and I need
    spell his name correctly. Lol

  53. Shoko January 20, 2015 2:45 pm

I’m sure there will be another competition at that position but what concerns me is the evaluation part. So far, Chow hasn’t had much luck in that department. I cringe at the thought there is another desperate quarterback carousel into the season because the so-called pick of the litter isn’t performing as expected.

  54. Shoko January 20, 2015 2:50 pm

“NBC is going to stream the Super Bowl for free!”

That’s great! All the homeless with smartphones will be able to visit their neighborhood Starbucks to catch the game. I love the USA!

  55. bowwar January 20, 2015 3:06 pm

Woolsey has yet to prove to me that he’s a D1 quarterback…That being said, we should bring in another QB (maybe JC) to ensure we have the best person at the controls of the offense…

  56. al January 20, 2015 3:08 pm

I think Beau Reilly will also be in the mix somehow. He’ll at least be in the top three.

  57. Boolakanaka January 20, 2015 3:10 pm

The birds are hot and heavy for MM, see:http://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/index.ssf/2015/01/philadelphia_eagles_plotting_t.html#incart_2box

  58. Z January 20, 2015 3:12 pm

Need more than one qb ready to go to hav a successful season. Competition is good to have.

  59. al January 20, 2015 3:15 pm

Woolsey did all right considering the lack of weapons he had to work with. The oline was somewhat improved however not as good as in the past glory days. Wr’s kept dropping balls, were unable to maintain separation let alone run a good pattern. When Joey went down our run game fell off somewhat.

We probably should have gotten the ball to diocemy, joaz, king, ewaliko a lot more whether through short, quick routes, bubbles, screens, and the like. Even shovel passes would have been nice.

We moved the ball up and down but consistently into the end zone.

It’s a combination of all of the above coupled with poor play calling.

  60. st. anthony trojan January 20, 2015 3:19 pm

SHOKO… there is small n very fine print for those overseas….says…small charge.. n have to jump through sum hoops as usual…. THE WORD FREE….is not what it was 50 years ago…now there is small print n disclaimers….which sumone should have read…with the hiring of ‘THE MESSIAH’… UH… AD.

  61. d1shima January 20, 2015 3:37 pm

Get well soon, Coach! Would be nice to see a sport coat flying across the BBall court again! 😉

  62. al January 20, 2015 4:20 pm

“We moved the ball up and down but NOT consistently into the end zone.”

  63. Balko January 20, 2015 5:27 pm

Per the ESPN Sports Animals interview, ST may be in for somewhat of a surprise given his expectation that the legislature will provide the money for the football program. I spoke with a very high ranking official in the Dept of Health and he said the Governor told DOH that they would have to do with a 1% increase in their budget despite federal funding cutbacks that are greatly afflicting the department. The DOH official said the Governor’s experience on the Ways and Means Committee is guiding an austere budget outline for state funded agencies going forward.

  64. A-House January 20, 2015 8:14 pm

How good is Naole as the OL coach?

Seems little improvement the last 2 years or did I not see the improvement?

  65. David J. January 20, 2015 8:34 pm

GET WELL COACH WALLACE!. I really hope you are being taking care of at Desert Spring Hospital in Las Vegas!. You are in really great hands over there!. But if you are at UMC ? I’ll be really scared to be there!. It’s the worst place to be! But the people in Hawaii and around state wishing you and really want you to get well soon!.

  66. David J. January 20, 2015 8:49 pm

Give me a break! The University of Hawaii football program just need a great defensive coach a defensive back coach too!. Norm Chow really seriously have to open up his air and ground game!. Because the players he going to get for next season are really great!. Just remember this people of Hawaii? Norm Chow is not June Jones now! I hope he being back the way he did at BYU and other University that always beaten UH.

  67. Fei Jai January 20, 2015 8:53 pm

If your opponent at chess is retarded guy, he not likely win no matter how many times you change chess board and chess pieces.

  68. al January 20, 2015 9:01 pm

A house…I’ve spoken to many folks who have observed practices, played the game, coached, know/spoken to coach Naeole, and are familiar with the players.

For what he had to work with, I believe he did a great job. His knowledge of the positions is non-compare. When he teaches the players listen. In a year or two when the players he has recruited come to fruition…you will know his true value.

    (Ditto with Kurt Gouveia)

  69. al January 20, 2015 9:07 pm

I’ll say it again…promote Demo to DC. He’ll get it done. It’s a great career move for him. He’s been a DC before and his involvement with the safeties lends some continuity to the defense with his own personal stamp on it.

  70. hitman January 20, 2015 9:50 pm

Woolsey should be the man going into this season !! after all coach made sure not to try any of the younger guys there last year !! he should get bo some playing time last year ! by going with Whittex for only 1 season what good is that !! after riding woolsey all season !! but then again it not all about wins and lost right bj ? try ask chow that? or go read his contract and all the money he losing not making he’s bonus

  71. pollypicador January 21, 2015 3:20 am

Can you believe that. Somebody endorsing Demo as DC.

Now I know for sure that person doesn’t go to practice. Unbelievable.

If anybody has seen Demo coach at practice-he’s a punk.

Trust me when I say this.

He yells, belittles and swears at players–not the kind of coach that players would want to look up to…pure abusiveness…some even say he get’s physical with his players.

What you need is a coach that teaches, is civil, smart and respected. Not someone like Demo, who has a short fuse (and a shorter intelligence), uses profanity and to be honest I’m surprised Chow has kept Demo thus far.

Demo’s the cancer to the Warriors…and I’ve said that before…you can see that…his kind, you can sniff out a mile away.

    Think.

  72. A-House January 21, 2015 6:50 am

    al:

you have restored my faith and look forward to the improvement along the OL

it’s going to be a “haul” at The Ohio State and Wisconsin and the backup QBs better be ready

  73. PONO January 21, 2015 7:05 am

Demo is a nut job though

  74. hatakeman January 21, 2015 7:52 am

Max Wittek. And if he is the best quarterback to win games, then he should be the starting QB, regardless if he has only one year to play.

  75. jimmy the lock January 21, 2015 8:09 am

Wake up wake up, wakey wakey, happy hump day!

  76. Former UH Athlete January 21, 2015 8:15 am

It’s too early to start hearing arguments to keep Woosley as the starter… Unless you’re into 50% passing. Even if he shows improvement, what’s his top side? 53-55%

  77. letsgowarriors January 21, 2015 8:34 am

as oppossed to Wittek who completed 53% at USC?
