The recruiting “dead period” ended this past midnight, and the UH coaches are hitting the road for home visits. It’s a two-part plan: 1) Secure the players who already pledged, and 2) Get new commits.
The first of three recruiting weekends begins tomorrow.

OK, I’m awake now.
I must say college football — OK, ESPN — probably does a better job at running things than the NFL.
The accessibility, the accommodations, at least media-wise, are way better organized for the championship game than, say, the Pro Bowl.
Next two and a half weeks could be exciting or disappointing. Daronte’s departure is very untimely, but he will double his salary at Wisconsin. What can we say but fair sailing.
What is the connection between Aranda and Jones. Sorry if this was already answered.
Not sure what the connection is. Aranda knows everybody, so when it comes to preparing for games, he’s always on the phone with an assistant asking, “how did you prepare for this” or “how did you prepare for that.”
What’s interesting is Aranda and Jones are not talkers. They’re both witty and dryly funny, but that’s mostly to the inner circle.

Daronte will double his salary at Wisconsin but he will also have extra bills to pay such as home heating, and snow removal 🙂

Probably a closer tie is Tony Tuioti. Tony and Daronte’ are good friends (both traveled to Samoa on a recruiting trip once), and Tony remains in touch with Aranda.

RsFr QB Eric Prater has transferred to Montana
RSFr WR Darrian Josey has returned back home to play closer to Florida
Soph DB Barry Higdon is seeking to transfer closer to Florida
Alot of these East coast guys transfer out. It may be time to stop getting players from there.
14. No. We just need to recruit better players from Florida. I doubt Higdon would have transferred if he was in the mix to play. Josey might be the only case of being closer to home. I think the coaches expected him to contribute fairly soon. one of the few WRs with speed.
Sad to see Daronte leave, from what I’ve seen he was perhaps our best recruiter.
I don’t blame him though, the current regime could be out soon, he has to look out for his family. Shame we were never able to grab Klem, who I think would make a great hire for UH someday.
Josey had amazing speed, something we haven’t had much of since Gant. We need a hell of a recruiting class this year, because as much as I like and support Chow, this could be his last chance to “stock the cupboard” so to speak.
UH football really needs needs changes !!no matter how he keeps going about things chow keeps finding ways to run this football in to the ground !! this was one of the worst hiring UH ever made !!
im sorry maybe it only me that feels that way !! but if you are a true UH FOOTBALL fan you never hire from rivals that you grow to hate over the years !! BYU !! alway remember them trying to run up the score on UH. till the wags years when UH got some pay back!!
sad but true going be extra hard for any local coach get a shot as a head coach at the UH!! to me CAL LEE would be doing way better !! look at saint louis the change from the start to end of the year !!

Unless you’re going to play them immediately, there’s no sense in recruiting East Coast kids. Redshirting and/or sitting on the bench only exasperates the problem of being 5000 miles away from home and home cooking. Never understood why Chow didn’t play Josey last year even if it was only as a KR.

When I hear people talk about coaches salaries and how much Norm Chow is getting paid I can only conclude they feel if he was paid more he would be a better coach or $550,000 a year only buys you a mediocre coach. I happen to believe there are many good coaches out there who would be a better fit at UH who would do the job for the same or less.

While not from Florida, Kirkwood was another East Coast signee who transferred (to Temple) to be closer geographically to home & family.

Kirkwood played alot as a true frosh…..and would’ve started last season.

Cardale staying at The Ohio State University…….to compete against JT…..and maybe even Braxton too……for the starting QB position for next season.
Won’t matter whomever ends up as the starting QB……since all QBs will see plenty of game action next Sept. 12th.

We all have to keep in the back of our minds….that a 3rd string QB beat us… n a 3rd stringer beat the ducks…things in that position can n DO change rapidly during the season…
Don’t want to bachi max… but lets not try to paint him as our ‘savior’…
Whomever starts back there…hope from spring game to bowl game is the same QB…
AS NOTED IN THE PRESS….MM was the only one that started the first game…n played in championship game…the rest of his teammates…not one that started the first game…played as a unit….they were replaced at least once as the season progressed…due to injuries etc.
We can hope for the best for team UH …in ALL SPORTS…….
I think if Cardale Jones entered the draft he would go undrafted due to his small body of work at the college level, regardless if he won a national championship. Chris Leaks won a national championship and it didn’t help him get drafted if I recall correctly.
I don’t think it’s fair or accurate to call Cardale Jones a third-string quarterback. He was number 2 last year, and while number three at the start of fall camp, Miller went down prior to the start of the 2014 season, so during the season, Jones was never third-string.
15. Not including other states. Florida is said to have similar weather and beaches like Hawaii so I know that’s a recruiting pitch we use. Plus it’s a football state vs northeast. We wouldn’t have landed Kirkwood has he been a football player his whole life.
While he was at one time…. he sure as hell did not play like one would expect…

Need better funding, need good coaches, need better facilities, need good recruits, need good retention, need good field performance, need more wins, need more exposures, and it starts all over and over again!!

Only Nevada offered Taito. Rivals graded him at 5.3 (2-star) which is about where many of Hawaii’s recruits have graded-out in most years. IMO, it’s a decent grade-recruit for a mid-major program.
With Russell Williams now onboard…….since Tevita Lataimua done…..and 3 senior ILBs (Gener, Poti, Fonua) this coming season……even with JGW returning, wonder if Clune still land another JC backer…….

The top tier guys from the top tier football high schools in hawaii – st louis, kam, pun, farrington, kahuku, waianae, campbell, and maybe, aiea – will always opt for the big name schools.
UH needs to concentrate on the top tier guys who get overlooked in all the shuffle. Mariota was a top tier guy from a top tier football high school, but he was overlooked by most except for oregon. We gotta find those kinds of players. To do this, we need coaches at UH are are close to the high school coaches here.
Right now, we don’t have these kinds of coaches at UH.
In addition to the top-tier players who are overlooked (eg MM) or inadvertently missed by the talking heads (tons of guys in this category), we gotta go hard after the second tier guys. The kanakas of the bunch. The kids from halawa housing, mayor wright, kuhio, kam iv, etc. These guys will not be recruited by the big name colleges. So, we go after them, offer them. They want to play for Hawaii. They talented. They got heart. The fight in them. The “just scrap” mentality. Perfect for the football field. Perfect for UH.

34. I don’t think so. Mageo has impressed so he will be ready to go. Glad we redshirted him. Williams has 3 years so that was a huge bonus I think. PAC 12 schools missed out on him IMO and probably thought he was a 2016 kid. I’m guessing Tago should be ready to go, and Matautia might end up moving to LB which I think he would thrive. I’m not comparing him to Urlacher but I can see him making that same transition and have an impact at the MWC level. My guess is they go the high school route with intention of redshirting.. Ronley Lakalaka or something.

Sometimes it doesnt matter if you play mainland guys. Sometime Hawaii just isn’t the right fit, outside of football. Kwamane Bowens, another East coast guy, is an example.
33 true it nice we could redshirted him !! but we should be trying to win !! and have all the best player out there on the field !! i know what you saying is so true !! but if you or i was the coach with only one win last year we would be playing for this year not next year !! we would not be so lucky like some coaches out there !!

Looks like some help with the pass rush.
As a sophomore for Fullerton College this past season, Fieeiki played in 10 of the team’s 13 games and recorded a total of 21 tackles (8 solo, 13 assisted, 3 for loss) and 1 sack. He adds depth to the D-line but at 6’6″ and only 250 lbs I’m wondering if Chow will keep him at DE or try to turn him into a TE.
