JC D-lineman commits to UH

Fullerton College defensive end Tolu Fieeiki told us he has accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors. Here’s the skinny:

> Fieeiki currently is 6-5 and 240. The goal is to gain weight before reporting in June.

> As a JC transfer, he should be able to enter the rotation quickly. He has three years to play two UH seasons.

> He played end in 4-3 scheme, but it’s the gap assignment — not the overall front — that matters. UH technically was in a 3-4 base, but often brought down an outside linebacker to the line. If he gains weight, he can play with his hand down. If not, he can be a stand-up end. Then again, Luke Shawley had success as a middle-weight d-end.

Hubby said that Marcus might be picked by the Jets, 6th in line.
It will be interesting to see where he does end up.
Anyway, how do you like the vog? Ugh.

  3. seewhy January 16, 2015 8:08 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!
@gigi-hawaii The vog is killing me. Stay indoors, turn on the AC.

  4. Stephen Tsai January 16, 2015 8:25 am

    Jm:
Yep, I’ll see everyone at VB tonight.

  5. jeezy33 January 16, 2015 8:44 am

Pretty sure tolu is more in the 250-260 range but hopefully he gets to 270 by fall

  6. Ipu Man January 16, 2015 8:54 am

Food like lots of fried rice with bacon, whoppers and French fries,
Cinnamon Buns :), loco moco with gravy all over, etc, will fatten
    him out nicely.

  7. 808WarriorFan January 16, 2015 9:20 am

Hopefully this guy is a BEAST…we need BEASTS on the DL.

  8. PONO January 16, 2015 9:22 am

I wish I needed a reason to eat heavily and gain weight.

  9. tom January 16, 2015 9:22 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

Ipu Man #6 – I tried it – it fatten me out = but not nicely!

  10. Stephen Tsai January 16, 2015 9:48 am

They’re bringing in OL, RB, CB, LB, NT in the next couple weeks.

  11. hatakeman January 16, 2015 9:49 am

Nice to get a DE, but we really need a JC DT and/or NT. Right now, I think there are only four interior D-linemen with experience that make up a rotation. Five guys, at the minimum, are needed for a rotation that can get them through a game that will stretch their endurance. As an example, in the title game, DeForest Buckner was gassed by the end of the 3rd quarter because OSU made them work real hard in stopping the run game. And they didn’t, as the defense got pushed around. Hawaii really needs to shore up the interior defense with the loss of Moses Samia, Calen Friel, and Marcus Malepeai to graduation.

  12. SteveM January 16, 2015 9:50 am

    Good morning everyone!

Welcome to the Warriors, Tolu Fieeiki!

    RE: #6
Ipu Man — that works for me. On a related note, I figured out the reason I’m not losing more weight is because I am increasing muscle mass. Not sure where, but it’s underneath there somewhere. 😐

  13. Kaukau808 January 16, 2015 10:19 am

    What about punter?

  14. boolakanaka January 16, 2015 10:41 am

Sole just needs to put on a solid 15-20 pounds.

And damn, that was quick, John Fox hired as da bears new HC.

  15. jeezy33 January 16, 2015 11:18 am

I’m usually pretty harsh on Chow when it comes to recruiting but it seems like he is picking his effort up this year with coaching departures. So I am going to give him credit when it’s due… If he can lock up this All American, it should patch up our DB issues a lot…

    RE: #13
I hope they are looking down under.

  17. jeezy33 January 16, 2015 11:22 am

    13. Hopefully a walk on. Hate wasting scholarships on Punters. Would rather just find a good athlete that can rugby style punt even if it’s not close to as good as Harding.

  18. Da Punchbowl Kid January 16, 2015 12:25 pm

    Welcome Tolu!

Jeezy – Agree with looking down under for punters. Heard somewhere that there are now 3 punters from OZ playing college ball. Harding has opened a lot of eyes during his time here.

Good luck to Daronte – had a chance to talk with him a couple of times and he seemed like a solid guy.

  19. bowwar January 16, 2015 12:31 pm

A good punter and a good PK is worth 7 points or more per game…I’d spend a scholarship on the BEST I can find. If there isn’t much selection, then I’d leave it open to walk-ons, etc.

  20. BigWave96744 January 16, 2015 12:39 pm

This Kicker has a scholie offer and is tripping in a few weeks

Where is Ceejay Santos? He had a good leg.

  22. BigWave96744 January 16, 2015 12:42 pm

I think there are over 10 Aussie punters in D1

  23. A-House January 16, 2015 12:48 pm

    BigWave:

5′ 10″ and 155#? must have a powerful leg then? ball goes far? how far?

hot dog – I have 20# more muscle than him!

  24. jeezy33 January 16, 2015 12:48 pm

    19. Lol who made that stat up? Someone give Vegas the heads up

  25. A-House January 16, 2015 12:49 pm

    recycling …

San Diego State: Former UNLV head coach Bobby Hauck will join the SDSU staff, according to Rivals.com.

  30. letsgowarriors January 16, 2015 2:04 pm

    lol favorite athlete “Peni Vea”

  31. Tanman January 16, 2015 2:21 pm

Yes, welcome Mr. Fieeiki!! Keep the recruits coming!!

  32. kahuna January 16, 2015 2:56 pm

Maggiano is 155lbs????…no way the dude is 155. He looks kind of beefy. He probably 5-10 185 which is a good size for a kicker.
5-10 155 is twig-like. If he is actually that size, he would look like Steve Urkel….LOL

  33. Bowwar January 16, 2015 3:38 pm

ST: Is it true that backup PK, Weese, is transferring to Kansas, as indicated on WSN? If so, we really need to scramble for a PK.

  34. traitmanz January 16, 2015 3:46 pm

Ronley Lakalaka to San Diego State

  35. Ipu Man January 16, 2015 5:58 pm

Randall Cunningham wants Philadelphia to draft Marcus Mariota.
They have the number 20 pick and would have to move up.
    So it would cost them.
But Randall thinks this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for
    the Eagles.

  36. Fei Jai January 17, 2015 1:04 am

We are not likely to see high quality recruits commit to uh with norm at the wheel. All the kids and parents know norm is entering his fourth and maybe final losing season.

If you get recruited by norm at this point, you will be ignored by the new incoming coach when the coaching change occurs. We know from norms record that he doesn’t know how to pick em.

    Not disputing that point.

  37. Inyoface January 17, 2015 5:08 am

    #37, Get a life.

  38. Shoko January 17, 2015 6:30 am

Perhaps Clune still has strong ties to Fullerton since his coaching career started at the small college. Wouldn’t be surprised Chow tries Fieeiki at tight end.

Interesting Aztec news about Hauck. Now Long has two former UNLV head coaches on staff: Hauck and the Jeff Horton who, by the way, was named the new offensive coordinator. Perhaps, Horton had a say in the Hacks hire?

  39. Sl1322 January 17, 2015 7:02 am

Clune going back to Utah State?

  40. Sl1322 January 17, 2015 7:03 am

  41. Shoko January 17, 2015 7:35 am

Clune going back to USU is very interesting news.

  42. Old School Dave January 17, 2015 7:44 am

If the reports about Kevin Clune are true, this is a major blow for UH. USU boosters, apparently, came up with the money to buy out Clune’s contract at UH ($160,000), which was the hold up.

  43. Shoko January 17, 2015 7:50 am

Not sure if Clune’s two-year contract had a buyout if he were to leave early. I’ve seen that clause in head coaching contracts but not for coordinators since they want that option should they get a head coaching gig or a lateral move with more pay.

  44. Shoko January 17, 2015 7:52 am

So, in any case, looks like Chow will be looking for a defensive coordinator and a secondary coach, or someone that can fill both roles on defense.

  45. Shoko January 17, 2015 7:53 am

I’m sure Boola will bring up Duane Akina, again. 😉

  46. Old School Dave January 17, 2015 8:34 am

Football Scoop is also reporting that Kevin Clune is returning to Utah State as their DC.

  47. 808WarriorFan January 17, 2015 8:54 am

#47 “OSD”… just read that as well … seems the assistant coaches know something we don’t ?????

  48. Bowwar January 17, 2015 9:03 am

Looks like coaches leaving a sinking ship…Powell may be next.

  49. Bryson January 17, 2015 9:10 am

I asked this question last week when USU’s D-Co took the Houston job,I guess I know why there wasn’t an answer…Sucks because what Coach in their right mind would want to be in a situation where they might have to look for work after only 1 season…sucks even more because I liked the progress Clune was making with the Defense…

  50. Old School Dave January 17, 2015 9:17 am

808WarriorFan: Who knows what’s going on on the coaching staff. Assistants have to look out for themselves (and families) as they have no job security. On the other hand promising coaches leaving UH for bigger programs has been an ongoing challenge since the Dave Holmes and Larry Price era (remember when Dom Capers was Prices’ DB coach back in the 70s?). Maybe (?) speaks well for Chow’s hiring of assistants, but not good for continuity, not to mention the timing. Potential defensive recruits want to know who their position coaches will be, IMHO.

  51. 808WarriorFan January 17, 2015 9:24 am

“OSD” you absolutely right about potential defensive recruits wanting to know who their position coaches will be but also who the DC is and what style / type of defense the DC will run. I’m sure you’ll have players who prefer a 4-3 vs a 3-4 type of “D” and vice versa.

So the question becomes who is a good up and coming position coach who wants to make his mark as a DC at the price UH can afford ????? Just thinking out loud here but here’s a name to throw out…Cal Lee…

  52. markazulu January 17, 2015 9:45 am

Much Mahalos to coach clune and coach jones. 2015 looking rough we got a new dc & secondary coach, possibly a new qb, and we gotta play ohio state & wisconsin on the road. I wonder who will Chow recruit to become the new DC.
