Volleyball Warriors: On the rise this fall
These are good times this fall for the volleyball Warriors, who went 8-4 in a recent California tournament, did well in recruiting, and are preparing for Tuesday’s exhibition match in the Stan Sheriff Center.
“There’s a lot to like,” said head coach Charlie Wade, who received a two-year contract extension this past summer.
Wade’s optimism is rooted in his 2015 recruiting class. “Anytime you get one guy off the (junior) national team, it’s nice,” Wade said. “We got three.”
The three blue-chippers are setter Joe Worsley (Pacific Rim Club, Campolindo High), 6-10 middle blocker Pat Gasman (Pacific Rim, Buchanan High), and Brett Rosenmeier (Coastal Club, Cox High in Virginia Beach).
The Warriors also signed 6-6 outside hitter Dalton Solbrig (Adversity Club, Lakes Community High in Illinois), 6-5 pin hitter Brandon Rattray (Seaside Club, Rancho Bernardo High in California), and 6-4 left-side hitter James Anastassiades (Huntington Beach Club, Huntington Beach High).
Worsley will be the third setter on the UH roster next season, a stockpiling strategy often used in football.
“I always liked the June Jones theory of quarterbacks, (having) seven or eight, then seeing if you can get one good one,” Wade said. “Typically, they’re good enough players they also can do other stuff.”
MPSF volleyball is an arms race, and the most successful have been teams with consistent cycles of powerful hitters. In recent years, Wade has used recruited players to develop. Hendrik Mol and Ian McKellar are ready to break into the rotation after progressing through the system.
“I don’t know if any of these guys need to play (immediately),” Wade said. “They’re all going to have a shot at getting to play. But in terms of our roster, you’re not looking at them having to step into the fire. They’ll have a chance to prove they can contribute. Out of the group, you’ll see some guys redshirt. It’ll allow us to continue to build the roster.”
The Warriors have seven seniors on this season’s roster.

Why are there only 38 players on UH’s football roster that are from Hawaii? In 2010, UH had 60. Also, what happened to the Australian connections? Scott Harding seems to be the last one.

I think the low numbers of Hawaii players is due to the players themselves. Some of them want to experience a different lifestyle, academics or parents decisions.
I was referring to 2010, where UH had 60 Hawaii kids and was winning.
Now there are only 38 Hawaii kids on the roster. If all were receiving scholarships, that is an addition of nearly $400,000 that the UHAD is responsible for in the form of out of state tuition. I’m not sure if UH got the go ahead to only charge resident tuition for exceptional students.

You can recruit the hell out of all the Hawaii high school players but if they have in their mind that they want to go away, there’s not a lot you can do. Plus a little tough to compete with schools that offer facilities comparable to Vegas hotels on the strip and full cost of attendance all taken care of.
When offered the head coaching position, didn’t Norm Chow ask that part of his salary be redistributed to assistant coaches’ salaries? I think this amounted to a reduction of his base by something like $125,000? He felt that he needed to boost the base for assistants in order to attract the level of coaches he was looking for. Anyway, this is what I thought, but then again age does take its toll on memory.

Punahou discourages football players from attending UH (Lakalaka exception). Now that they are raiding the North Shore and their top recruiter is from Kahuku, I expect less football players attending UH..

Kakaako Kid….not only Punahou, most schools in Hawaii do that. I have a couple of friends who are college counselors in the public school system in Hawaii and they “strongly encourage” kids to pursue academics/sports outside of Hawaii to get a world view of things and experience life outside of Hawaii. When I was in high school, although I’m a private school kid, 98 percent of my class went to a 4 year university…and over 80 percent of the 98 percent went to the mainland….most never returned… 🙁

Plus, like Andrew said, when a kid goes on a recruiting trip to say, the University of Oregon, and sees the facilities they have (which by some accounts are better than some NFL facilities), and then goes to Hawaii and sees their facilities, of course the kid is going to be heavily influenced by that. It’s like offering a kid a brand new Dodge Challenger….or a 1972 Datsun….LOL
Someone told me there are 23 full scholarship players on the Punahou football team. If true, that would be $460,000. Is it me or is this a bit extreme?

Not to mention, those schools can offer the recruits all of their meals taken care of. They can pretty much eat whenever they want and even some schools are giving them steaks and lobsters. From a parents point of view, it’s an easy choice to send your son/daughter to a school where everything will be taken care of and they will not have to worry about their kid being hungry.
I guess you folks answered that question.
Thus, we have to give big props to the folks like Beau, Moses, Kennedy and others who were heavily recruited by those schools and chose to play at home.
I’m guessing everyone around UH will be rooting for Fresno State and Air Force this week.

In the paper this morning good article about poly players. Scott Harding qualified with his Tuvalu heritage, said a lot of good athletes on Tuvalu that don’t get chance to go to college. UH should consider sending a recruiter there on the trip to Samoa and Australia.
The Warriors aren’t done recruiting in Australia.

there are 3 punahou kids at UH, 2 are redshirting.
Punahou does not give scholorships, they offer financial aid to all students. Every private school in Hawaii offers financial aid, Kamehameha is of course the largest school that offers the most to students in the form or aid.
BTW Public schools also has financial aid in the form of free lunches, school supplies,uniforms, and bus. I find if troubling that people get down on any school offer aid to any student regardless of amount, isnt it supposed to be about the kids and opputunity? Punahou has coaches who played at UH as well as coaches sons that played for UH, hard to believe that they are against UH and would talk kids out of playing there.

There are 40 local boys on the UH team and another 21 with either Polynesian or Local ties to the island.
In 2010 there were 61 local boys with 14 with either Polynesian or Local ties
But then in 2010 we had 1 player from Florida and 2014 we go 6

I apologize for the error. I should have said 23 players on full financial aid which would be $476,100. I am not sure if this includes lunches, supplies, uniforms, buses.
What bothers me about recruiting is we haven’t sent too many players to the NFL in recent years. I think we’re near the bottom of the MWC in the number of players we’ve sent in the last four years.
Financial aid or athletic scholarship you can call it whatever you want. All of the best players on Punahou’s team are on it.
Do the financial aid students at Punahou have to pay it back? If not it’s a scholarship.
Just heard, 2nd hand info, that Oceanic Cable is responsible to pay UH $2+ million for football as per their contract, but only collected $1.5 million. Can anybody confirm this? What will happen with UH and Oceanic next year? Will they raise their prices? If this is true, then not only attendance at Aloha Stadium is hurting, but with a boring, losing team, so is PPV. I guess fans just lost interest in UH football.
Today’s article in the newspaper said Tyler Hadden joined the Warriors in July 2012. I think it should read 2010. I see his name listed on the 2010 roster as a freshman, then a redshirt freshman in 2011 .
Did not know Harding was originally from Tuvalu. Tuvalu is one of those island’s where sea water is rising with global warming and many residents have opted to begin leaving for places like New Zealand and Australia.

Also, since ST hangs around the athletic department complex a lot, he has insight on many UH sports. 🙂
It’s private school alumni and parents that encourages their children and student-athletes to select schools on the mainland. After spending a lot on tuition for six years or more, they want their kids to select schools like Washington, Cal, Notre Dame, etc. Nothing against Hawaii, but the sheep-skin from those schools carry more weight. It’s when local athletes choose lower academic standing schools over UH that makes me wonder “what were they thinking?” The other factor in selecting mainland options is high-profile football programs like Texas A&M, Oregon, etc. is understandable. UH just has to recruit harder to find good players for its program. Most of these players are found on the mainland, so why worry about local players choosing to go away?

why play JV when you good enough for varsity. why play at a mid-major when you have a shot at the big schools. year after year very few top local players choose hawaii. money talks and we all know hawaii is broke.
