For each of the past three trips to Hawaii, the Rebels traveled by commercial flight on Thursday and stayed on the North Shore.
In those three games, the Rebels were outscored by an average of 49.6 points to 11.7. The closest game was 42-13 in 2006.
This time, the Rebels are scheduled to travel today on a charter flight. They will stay in Waikiki. As per the Mountain West Conference’s agreement, UH is paying UNLV $150,000 in travel subsidies.

UH should just view it as an appearance fee. That would be a reasonably and relatively inexpensive payout for a late-November opponent.

Congratulations to all the graduates, and future graduates! Out of the 22 or 23 seniors on the FB team, I believe 16 will graduate this December, 4 next May, 1 next December and 1 is already in graduate school. Where is this 40% graduation rate that has been tossed around? Seems more like 100% to me.
I guess UNLV is also cash strapped to use commercial and fly in a day later. Then they can use the rest of that 150k to offset some of their home game attendance. (Average 14,756 issued 11,367 turnstile)
Let’s support the team tomorrow night! For fun I go on the eticket hawaii site for this game and I go to pick your own seats section and there are a lot, a lot of green dots everywhere. Maybe I gotta see an eye doctor.
I will be there to support, but I hope it’s not my last as a season ticket-holder…Unless there is a earth shattering change in the next few games, I can’t see us continuing to support a football program that is going backwards. I really think the UH “powers that be” need to take a strong look at replacing the AD and football coach if it plans to keep the program profitable and moving forward.
Like Hawaii, UNLV has QB problems.
They had a Jr QB quit the team a few weeks ago and their current starting QB is JC Transfer who is not 100%
Their remaining 3 QB’s are all RedShirt Freshman, including former Mililani Trojan Jarin Morikawa
In past 4-5 seasons, Hawaii has lost quite a few games to True or Redshirt Freshman QB’s. Better not take the Rebels Lightly

IMHO, the losing coach of this Saturday’s game will be fired at the end of the season. Aside from the fluke 2013 season, Bobby Hauck has won 24% of his games in 5 years while Norm has won 20% over 3 years. Both have consistently challenged New Mexico as the worst team in the MWC

UH’s problems are far beyond the football coach and AD. Replacing them is not going to fix everything. We may win more football games but the same operational and financial problems will still be there.
In addition to the significant losses on the D-line, the O-line has a couple of big holes to fill with the loss of starters Sean Shigematsu and Kody Afusia, plus backup Frank Loyd Jr. 2015 not looking very good right now. Chow and staff will have to get early JC commits in December so they can participate in spring ball. Anyone know how this is coming along?
not as worried about OL since we have a bunch of younger players that have been developing the past 2 seasons plus we have 4 verbals so far.

Hawaii had a better deal with UNLV when both were in different conferences. I believe each paid each others travel cost at the time.

Turnstile next UH game to be less than 17k.
Judging by the prices of airfare i’ve looked at on several travel sites(Panda, Cheaptickets, Expedia), UH is completely overpaying in travel subsidies to the MWC. In some places (Boise, Laramie, Albuquerque) it is cheaper to fly to Honolulu than to most MWC destinations commercially with an average price difference of around $100 per ticket. That’s less than a $6500 difference than what UH would be paying with a travel roster of 64 to fly commercial. I assumed that the $150,000+ in travel subs were supposed to cover charter flights, which kind of made sense, as they cost around $100,000 for a plane that carries up to 130 passengers(i assume the schools can sell the extra seats to boosters). But if a MWC team is not flying charter, they are only paying around $50,000-$60,000 total for the players’ airfare to Hawaii, according to the travel sites I looked at. Many have argued that the MWC teams should take either the subsidy(meant for charter flights) or the 13th game. UNLV took the $150,000 Charter Flight subsidy in 2012, flew commercial, AND scheduled a 13th game. That is definitely not fair. I wonder how many other MWC schools have flown here commercial. If we are paying travel subs meant for charter flights, those schools better be taking those charter flights.

Just flipping through the recruiting … I like this OT Christian Cronk (6’4″ 290lb) kid from Oceanside, CA. That kid plays with some anger. He’s given his verbal to UH. Hopefully UH gets his signature in February. He could be a force a couple years down the road once he gets stronger. He’s pretty mobile for his size.
I also really like the looks of OLB/DE Juyoung Woo (6’3″ 235lb), also from Oceanside, CA. He looks like a bigger and much meaner version of Leonard Peters.

Only thing of concern at this point is that we don’t have any early commits for big Dlinemen. Borden and Woo are listed as DEs, but they are only 235lbs, so they are likely going to be rush ends/OLB in the 3-4.
Given the fact that UH loses a ton of DLinemen this offseason, UH will likely need to bring in some JC transfers to fill immediate holes. True freshmen aren’t going to be ready for 2015.
It’s still early for majority of commits for UH. MWC teams typically don’t get waves of commits until after the season and the 2nd tier recruits don’t get in at the top programs.

all 4 teams did well..with what they had…n all teams seemed to be well coached… from what me read…mr. york seems to be a fine coach.. n can n does bring out the best of what is ‘dealt’ to him…

The travel subsidy is just that (or call it an appearance fee)– it is not a reimbursement of travel costs. So teams can charter or fly commercial. Not sure we had the leverage to avoid the subsidy. The story reported in the media was that negotiations had stalled because Donovan was not available and we were about to be left out of the conference. But a friend of Rock’s who was one of the commissioners for the conference called Rock to let him know that Hawaii needed to act quickly or be left out. So one view is that Rock saved the day for us and got us into the Mountain West for football just before we were to be rejected and he had to agree to the travel subsidies or be left out– like Idaho and the other WAC teams that did not go to the Mountain West.
I believe that even if we have a fantastic winning record and great home attendance in the next few years we would still not be attractive enough to be asked or considered for one of the major conferences.
We do not have a large enough market to make us a must have member. I have stated this before and will say again that the UH would be wise to capture the or a big piece of the Asian market (be it Korea, Japan and/or China) and make that relationship “ours”.
If we had that market firmly secured, I believe that someone wanting a piece of those dollars will come a calling and UH would be in a very different negotiating position.
Right now we have nothing (even a winning season with coaches Tomey and Jones) did not make UH attractive enough (Colorado and Utah were deemed more attractive to the PAC 10 when they decided to expand). It is more about the market and potential dollars than it is about winning when it comes to being “asked to the Big party”.
Just my opinion, of course.
