Graham had all the right moves

Quarterback Taylor Graham is scheduled to undergo surgery today to repair a fractured right foot suffered against Wyoming.

If his first start of 2014 was the last game of his UH career, Graham should be remembered as a player who did the right things, said the right things, and acted the right way.

If he had any complaints, we’ll never know.

If he pouted, we never saw it.

If you don’t like him, something is wrong with you.

There are a lot of characters in football. Graham has character.

    Nice and True.
Thanks Graham! You will do well in life.

  2. paintslinger October 14, 2014 6:13 am

Could not agree more. I thought he looked good in the Wyoming game and could have taken us all the way. Graham was a real asset in more ways than one.

  3. letsgowarriors October 14, 2014 6:26 am

wow so who’s the #2 QB now?

  4. wn October 14, 2014 6:29 am

From what I have observed Taylor Graham projected himself as an individual with quiet, conservative and most of all mature confidence…something that I find very refreshing in collegiate sports.

  5. NorthShoreFan October 14, 2014 6:44 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

Seems like Lakalaka may be ready for SDSU. Running back…Lakalaka, St. Juste, Vele, Joas, Lewis…
    QB…Woolsey, Reilly, Ewaliko
    Reload Warriors!….IMUA!

  6. gigi-hawaii October 14, 2014 6:47 am

Good luck and best wishes to Taylor Graham. I hope the surgery is successful.

I, too, want to know who the #2 QB is now. Is it Beau?

And who is the starting RB?

  7. Shoko October 14, 2014 6:52 am

They moved Ewaliko back to quarterback?

  8. NorthShoreFan October 14, 2014 6:54 am

Ewaliko was not moved to QB but he played the position in HS. He should take some reps just in case.

  9. UHfan808 October 14, 2014 6:55 am

    Good morning, Tsai-kos!

  10. hatakeman October 14, 2014 6:56 am

Really bad luck for Taylor Graham, just when things were going good for him on the field. But I guess as the old saying goes, if life deals you lemons, you make lemonade. Taylor will do well in life.

  11. jeezy33 October 14, 2014 6:57 am

    6. Question is, can we learn the triple option in a week??

  12. NorthShoreFan October 14, 2014 6:57 am

Not sure when we had so many injuries to specific positions. Team is resilient. We may have to go to more of a passing game if RB’s aren’t available.

  13. UHfan808 October 14, 2014 6:58 am

Hey, not to mention super duper tall! Hehe 😀

Hope the surgery goes well for Taylor Graham!

Thank you for being part of the Warrior Team, Taylor!

  14. islandman October 14, 2014 6:58 am

Graham was a team player, did well when he got the chance, but had hard luck again. When they were down in the first half, he was encouraging his unit and the other units, per the radio sideline reporter. He was there after the game on crutches participating in the alma mater and last cheer.

    #3 — No. 2 now is Beau Reilly. Who’s No. 3 ? Prater ?

  15. NorthShoreFan October 14, 2014 7:02 am

iirc, Prater is the #3 right now.

  16. Shoko October 14, 2014 7:06 am

Ah, thought somehow Ewaliko sneaked into the QB lineup.

  17. Shoko October 14, 2014 7:07 am

Good luck to Graham. Hope he didn’t regret coming playing for the Warriors.

  18. NorthShoreFan October 14, 2014 7:12 am

Shoko, just imho. He was pretty good at that position. Not sure of his arm strength but he on tough and fast bugga.

  19. haka October 14, 2014 7:16 am

    Best wishes to Taylor Graham!
    Consummate Warrior!
    Even better person!

  20. NorthShoreFan October 14, 2014 7:16 am

Shoko, just imho. Ewaliko was pretty good at that position in HS. Not sure of his arm strength but he on fast and tough bugga.

  21. st. anthony trojan October 14, 2014 7:22 am

Me just wonder ….what will happen if ikaika…is not as proficient back there at half time..if he gets pulled for beau…???

But surely hope he continues his ‘hotness’ back in his backfield…n delivers the bacon again…

  22. ArcumFortis October 14, 2014 7:27 am

Respect and thanks to TG. Most here are old enough to know our dreams don’t always come true. For me it is more a matter of a willingness to passionately pursue those dreams whether the outcome leads to joy or disappointment. So heal well young man and just maybe those young bones will respond in time for one last curtain call.

And to J.V. Sr. (yesterday’s post #52). Thank you for taking the time to post and reminding us again that these young men are human beings with a commitment to succeed and families who love them. When the team does porrly we all get a little nuts. It’s good to remember that these Warriors are real people we are commenting on not phantoms from a video game.

  23. Shoko October 14, 2014 7:27 am

I think Ewaliko could play any position and be proficient as long as he stays in that position.

Wasn’t he at one time a scout quarterback awhile back?

  24. d1shima October 14, 2014 7:30 am

    Great Morning All!

Best wishes for Taylor Graham and Mahalo for being a Warrior.

Hoping that his contribution will be of an instructive nature to the QB’s going forward. There was a lot that he did differently last week in that half of play that should be emulated.
However, as UHFan808 noted, you can’t teach height! 😉

  25. d1shima October 14, 2014 7:32 am

    Shoko,

If he stayed at OSU he would never have stepped on the field so, no, I doubt there are any regrets.

  26. tom October 14, 2014 7:33 am

GOOD MORNING or AFTERNOON (where I am), HAWAII!

  27. d1shima October 14, 2014 7:34 am

Eh, regarding the QB2, no sked ’em…

The Heisman went to a frosh the last 2 seasons! 😈

  28. Shoko October 14, 2014 7:36 am

True, but Graham might have had other transfer options other than Hawaii.

  29. haka October 14, 2014 7:37 am

Graham’s character was indeed at the forefront last Saturday when he was roaming the sideline on crutches encouraging and supporting Woolsey and the rest of the Warriors. We all noticed and we were all very proud of him.

  30. Shoko October 14, 2014 7:37 am

Guess its a non-issue now since his college career is over. No sense contemplating on the what-ifs.

  31. tom-warriornation October 14, 2014 7:41 am

we now have almost 400 Hawaii fans at the SDSU game on Oct. 18 sitting behind our Warrior bench; 10-20 rows behind (first 10 rows are vacant) from the 50-20 yard lines including the families of Kody Afusia, Tyler Hadden, Malachi Mageo, TJ Tamatuia, Simon Poti & Ruben Guzman.

I can still get tickets for SDSU if anyone wants to join our 400 Hawaii fans–I can email these tix since it is too late for mailing. $18 each.
    Text Tom at: 415-324-0585.

  32. NorthShoreFan October 14, 2014 8:04 am

It was a bad hand off to JV that caused a fumble. TV highlights showed it was too low. Anyhoo, JV is going to be a very important part this weekend.
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  33. J.V. Sr. October 14, 2014 8:07 am

Our prayers are with Taylor and the Graham family for Taylor to have a speedy recovery. It’s hard to see a son, grandson, nephew or friend get hurt in a game that affects there entire season or career. Especially when there contributing and doing so well.

  34. Hilo Moon October 14, 2014 8:53 am

To Taylor Grham — a big MAHALO and a speedy recovery – the team needs you.

  35. Maddog50 October 14, 2014 9:09 am

Tough deal for TG best of luck for what comes next

  36. Lurker#8 October 14, 2014 9:13 am

Good luck to Graham and a speedy recovery.
Thank you for being a warrior and contributing
    To the team.

  37. cocobean October 14, 2014 9:31 am

TG’s demeanor reminds me of JJ’s first starting QB here. I know he’ll be as successful in life as Dan Robinson.

  38. Andrew October 14, 2014 9:32 am

Speedy recovery and best wishes to Taylor Graham. My favorite Warrior memory of him would be in his first game when he laid out that USC player when blocking for the run.

  39. SteveM October 14, 2014 9:36 am

    Good morning everyone!

Best wishes and mahalo to Taylor Graham!
He earned his spot as starting quarterback and did well in the process. Heal up!

  40. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 14, 2014 9:38 am

Good luck to Graham. It’s unfortunate he never really had a chance to settle in. Wish him all the best.

Does anyone know the reason why Ewaliko is used so sparingly as a WR? It’s surely not speed that is holding him back from getting in the rotation.

  41. Turfwar October 14, 2014 9:44 am

Just wanted to say that Graham’s TD pass in the first half was as beautiful a pass as I have seen by a UH QB at Aloha Stadium in years. Tight spiral, on time, and hit the receiver in stride in the back corner of the end zone. A big time play. Hope we get to see more of him even if it’s in a pro uniform of some kind. NFL, Canadian, Arena League…

  42. Andrew October 14, 2014 10:02 am

    38.

Yeah agreed, that was an excellent TD pass.

  43. ManuOKeKai October 14, 2014 10:03 am

Mahalo to Taylor Graham for becoming a UH Warrior. Unfortunately, as fate would have it, his full potential was not realized. He did, however, demonstrate the definition of a team player. It showed the rest of the team what commitment is. I am sure that this experience will serve him well in life and I expect to hear great things about this young man in the future. Real classy guy.

  44. Makai October 14, 2014 10:04 am

Class act all the way. Good luck TG in your future endeavors after graduation.

  45. islandman October 14, 2014 10:27 am

    37. — Radio commentator said Keelan takes some time to learn a new position and needs reps.

  46. Andrew October 14, 2014 10:28 am

    42.

Yeah I really don’t see them putting Ewaliko at QB even with the lack of depth that we have now.

  47. (Jesse)James October 14, 2014 11:01 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!!

Best wishes for Taylor Graham. Hope he heals well. Great having you as a Warrior…Thank You.

  48. (Jesse)James October 14, 2014 11:03 am

#43…I agree…but he would be an emergency option if absolutely necessary.

I seem to recall, and not sure if this is correct since I was sooo young at the time…Blaine Gaison played QB for a couple of games in the 70s??? Even though that wasn’t his position on the team. I’d have to ask people like PRIDE…BOOLA BOOLA….and AL…. 🙂

  49. Boolakanaka October 14, 2014 11:42 am

JJames, I’ll defer to Kifi, as he was front and center, but indeed Mr. Gaison played in both backfields, offensive and defensive.

  50. Tiki808 October 14, 2014 11:51 am

Now it’s official, Iosefa is out. So is Taylor Graham whose career were filled with injuries. His shoulder last year and now this foot injury, of which marks the end of his career. They’re playing for the websites and so it looks as if injuries for many players have ended. Remember Kennedy Maseali’i? He’s still in there. What else is new to this team besides injury? Playing for another team and trying to make the team again is a common thing for Hawai’i. Wittek and Prater? Does this sound familiar to you? Big names.

  51. shadow October 14, 2014 11:54 am

Get well soon & mahalo to Taylor! An inspiration & example of the best in college athletics. Proud to be cheering you on as a Hawaii Warrior!!

  52. whitey October 14, 2014 12:32 pm

Should the Warriors take a non player like to TG to SD??? Probably a stupid question by me, but I think he contributes a lot to the team’s performance even tho he is a non player and this team appears to need someone like him to keep pushing them.

  53. cocobean October 14, 2014 12:33 pm

#48. Larry Price recruited Gaison to run his Hula T. I think Alex Kaloi (sr) and Mike Stennis (fr) were also QBs in 76′. Not sure if Price or Tomey who came in 77′ switched Gaison to safety.

  54. Shoko October 14, 2014 12:36 pm

I don’t think you want to waste a travel roster spot if a player can’t play. Although, I have seen players that were injured and still traveled with the team but I don’t know if the player paid his own way.

  55. Shoko October 14, 2014 12:37 pm

I just realized why sometimes my post awaits moderation. If I use a different email that is not recognized then it goes into the moderation bin.

Anyway, I don’t think you want to waste a travel roster spot if a player can’t play. Although, I have seen players that were injured and still traveled with the team but I don’t know if the player paid his own way.

  56. bowwar October 14, 2014 1:04 pm

With Iosefa out indefinitely, it wouldn’t hurt to train Ewaliko on the “Wildcat” offense that they had for Iosefa. Four or five set plans in the wildcat with Ewaliko especially in short yardage situations, should be a good boost and safeguard if any of the QBs go down…

There is another player on the roster who was the scout team QB last year that might also be available…

I think Graham showed “Senior leadership” on the sideline and while he was in the game. What the team needs are leaders who are willing to “carry” their teammates through adversity. The Seniors need to step-up if they want to have a “defining” season to be proud of…

  57. bowwar October 14, 2014 1:06 pm

Good to hear that Higgins is trying to make it back and contribute…Again, his Senior leadership is going to help as we hit the stretch run…

  58. Kanak October 14, 2014 1:49 pm

    Best wishes to TG…

My question is if anybody thinks that the “light came on” for Ikaika from this game??? Looks like we’re gonna have to ride with him thru the rest of the season, as I can’t see Beau being able to jump in with his limited experience and even less reps. Thoughts??? GO BOWS!!!

  59. Ipu Man October 14, 2014 2:22 pm

Warm Best wishes to Taylor Graham!
He will make a fine catch for some lucky UH girl.

  60. kawika49 October 14, 2014 2:35 pm

I kno kea, I got my flea flicker, got my hitch and go, just want to see an end tackle cross block, back slip through; then i’m happy.

  61. Tiki808 October 14, 2014 2:56 pm

It’s a heart breaker to lose Iosefa. I think if worse gets to worse, maybe rehabilitation on his drinking problem would do the community a good service. Graham has ended his career with Hawai’i and a foot injury. Who will step up to play?

  62. cocobean October 14, 2014 2:59 pm

k49. I got a bet with my nephew that before the season is over Chow is going to call a throw back pass to Woolsey either off of a Ewaliko reverse or a Joey toss sweep.

  63. Old Diver October 14, 2014 3:03 pm

    61

Sounds like he used poor judgement at an after game celebration. I don’t think we should take the leap that he has a drinking problem.

  64. BTO October 14, 2014 3:05 pm

The depth at RB and QB are thin. Coaches may want to check if Brandon Spearman, Christian Stanhardinger and Michael Harper are enrolled in school. If they are they may have one more year of eligibility to play somewhere – Spearman would make a great TE.

  65. Old Diver October 14, 2014 3:07 pm

After watching Beau Riley warming up on the sidelines I think he will need to use the next couple years to get physically ready to play Div 1 ball.

  66. Tiki808 October 14, 2014 3:09 pm

They were the most talkative. Taylor Graham and Joey Iosefa were the most talkative in high school. Teachers called on them in Sophomore year the most and so they were the popular ones. For myself, “I am a computer user”, for the longest time now. How would you know this? UNIX, DOS, Windows, JAVA, does this sound familiar programming languages for you? What I am really saying is rehabilitation is the only solution for Iosefa’s drinking problem. As for Graham, if he has computer skills, very good. If not, I doubt it. My point is the team is in rebuilding and they don’t need these two players, pick other players. Simple!
21 Jump Street for example, find the source of the problem, case closed. Iosefa is one Graham is the other. Next 2 players up. easy!

  67. islandman October 14, 2014 3:21 pm

Give Pareese a chance ( a little more chance).

  68. kawika49 October 14, 2014 3:29 pm

T808, u left out CPM, Fortran, cobol.

  69. cocobean October 14, 2014 3:31 pm

Kanak. The light came on but it did flicker every so often. What mattered most was he played with confidence and for the most part held his composure. He has the talent to be one of the better QBs we’ve ever had but still has a long way to go.

  70. kawika49 October 14, 2014 3:38 pm

#62 good thought, if the other guys are playing soft on the outside.

  71. kawika49 October 14, 2014 3:47 pm

Still waiting for the hook and ladder, though.

  72. Andrew October 14, 2014 3:51 pm

    71.

Would be a good idea, but I think they should wait until they can master and show more consistency with execution on the plays they are currently doing.

  73. Old School Dave October 14, 2014 3:52 pm

#53 – cocobean: Jeff Duva, a transfer from BYU and SDSU was UH’s starting QB in Dick Tomey’s first year as UH head coach in 1977. Duva also started n 78. Ton of players transferred into UH in 1977 (many from UCLA, where Tomey came from), the last year they could do so and be eligible to play without sitting out. The WAC said that UH needed to adhere to NCAA transfer rules one year before they offcially entered the conference in 1979. Last I heard, Duva was president of a scouting service in So Cal.

  74. Old School Dave October 14, 2014 4:02 pm

Interesting story from the BC Lions of the CFL:

    http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/Lions+running+back+Keola+Antolin+serious+brand/10286540/story.html

  75. (Jesse)James October 14, 2014 4:03 pm

Old School Dave…I remember when Jeff Duva dropped the pass that would have scored a TD against USC….but I was like 6 years old….and remember the crowd going crazy and then doing the whole “AWWWWW” thing…LOL

  76. Da Punchbowl Kid October 14, 2014 4:09 pm

    Dear Taylor Graham –

Have to agree with D1shima – you showed a lot of folks how the QB position can be played! No injury will ever change the fact that you were and are a very, very good football player and a fine QB. Loved your demeanor and your confidence on the field. God bless and keep you always, mahalo for being a Warrior!

    Warriors, step up and shine!

  77. Tiki808 October 14, 2014 4:09 pm

That made sense. We can look forward to a better season or a flop and rebuild again. Plus 1 point is always the safer method. Do not go for plus 2 points. Unless it is necessary. Offensively, they don’t have the pounds on plus 2. Keep it safe and simple. Notre Dame is #6. I think Notre Dame is a better team because of their theory on approaching the game. Hawai’i doesn’t view it the same way.

  78. RainbowCliff October 14, 2014 4:24 pm

Coco Bean, Jessie James & Old School Dave, It was Tomey who switched Blaine Gaison from quarterback to safety. 1976 I, Mike Stennis, Dwayne Jett, Dana McClemore all came from Los Angeles to play for UH. 1976 had Larry Price Head Coach with Norris Birdsong and Wilbert Haslip big tandem running backs with Alex Kaloi as it’s quaterback. Jeff Duva came the following year with Gary Allen, Verlon Redd, Keith Hill, Tom Tuinei, Semeri Ulufale, David Toluumu & a host of others including Tomey UCLA roots bringing transfer Pat Schmidt a BIG time safety who could hit with the best of them. All those guys that were mentioned I had the pleasure of meeting and sharing quality time. Never forget my time in 1976 with Dan Audick my first year when he was going back to UH for his masters. Dan showed me his 49er SuperBowl ring and let me wear it. Man that thing was heavy with so many diamonds as I needed a calculated to keep count. GREAT guy who sat me down and told me that athletics is one thing but a degree will keep you for life. Never forgot those words as I will see him this weekend in San Diego. True Rainbow Warriors for LIFE !

  79. Tiki808 October 14, 2014 4:34 pm

More value on the 37,000 seat stadium they’re playing. Just start on it. Paper bags are them, so go get them with the new look. Pictures? So what? Find some place else to put it in the new arena.

  80. RainbowCliff October 14, 2014 4:36 pm

Oh, forgot to mentioned Ricki Bass came from LA too in 1976. The Greatest Center Fielder Of All Time covering all of that quarry baseball down field from the dorm towers. MAN that was a GREAT era with nothing but grey bungalows for coaches and AD offices with the track field and football turf for work outs and conditioning.

NOBODY never complained as we just prepared our selves with so much hard work as you could see sweat all over the faces, practice uniforms and field. Game day was just the final touch as the band will play the FIGHT song and we just FIRED up running out to that enthusiastic crowd. Aloha Stadium and Blaisdel arena was the hottest ticket in town and all eyes were glued every where watching the bows. AWESOME times !

  81. Tiki808 October 14, 2014 4:45 pm

What about Glenn Braggs? Hype is the Aloha Stadium. More value is what we need. 37,000 seat arena will do the trick. Throw out all the pictures and start new again. A new era in football at UH.

Hope the surgery went well and Taylor is on the road to recovery!

Have a nice day, everyone! Play nice!

  89. 4-Prong October 15, 2014 5:54 am

$: god. you guys make like you never EVER stayed out late and partied in your 20s (which, judging by the average age of people here, must’ve been 50 years ago or something). Football players are still young people too. Young people go out and party for the most part. They also sometimes make bad choices. There are a bunch of us that could’ve been arrested for DUI after a night out with friends but didn’t because we were lucky enough to not get caught (the 80 year olds in here included).

all this crap like “omg! joey was out until 4 am! he should think about football and football only! why isn’t he studying his playbook??”

give me a break. he’s not in the nfl. he’s not gonna make the nfl. he’s a college kid doing what most people in their 20s do. It’s a bad decision and he’s gotten suspended for three games and now has a DUI charge. If he’s smart, he would plead not guilty, get a lawyer and fight the charges. Sucks that this happened, but best of luck to him. next time, avoid the main surface roads after a night out or ride with a friend.
