Proceeding with caution

At this point in the season, like in the pros and many other college programs, the Warriors have had to ease up on the ferocity of practices.

For yesterday’s practice, the Warriors cut out two five-minute periods. They also put a few key players on limited-contact status.

It makes sense. It gives players an additional day for their bodies to recuperate, as well as provide more practice reps for developing players. And the way things have gone, developing players need to be ready to play.

There is so much turmoil lately — Coach Chow’s personal problems as well as injuries and DUI among the players — I am just wondering if there is still the desire to compete and win the next football game.

I hope the team is not demoralized.

  3. beans October 15, 2014 7:10 am

“DUI among the players” ? Is there more than one? Let us not get carried away. The team will deal with what they have on their plate and continue to play. One person doesn’t define the TEAM. Did you see the effort that they put out against Wyoming? They are not going to quit!
The advice should be “Don’t drink and Drive! Not “use the surface roads” Wrong message.
    Get on a roll Bows!

Aloha all! Either we are dealing with some Amish folks on the board or just plain judgmental people.

Many-many of our former players, some stars, who played on Sundays, were notorious for being late-night dwellers. And certainly in my day it was another place and time, that if you got pulled over by HPD, a lecture or maybe even an escort home, was the usual outcome of events. Now, I am not saying that makes it right, but chill out…..people at this age make mistakes, and if you have any amount of self-reflection, you make a corrective course of action.

But, maybe folks don’t know what its like to play D1 ball and it be in your own backyard, but there was and still is, lets say a lot of late night carousing….always has been, and always will be….

we have almost 400 Hawaii fans at the SDSU game on Oct. 18 sitting behind our Warrior bench; 10-20 rows behind (first 10 rows are vacant) from the 50-20 yard lines including the families of Kody Afusia, Tyler Hadden, Malachi Mageo, TJ Tamatuia, Simon Poti & Ruben Guzman.

I can still get tickets for SDSU if anyone wants to join our group–I can email these tix since it is too late for mailing. $18 each. Text Tom at: 415-324-0585.

The team might do the haka right in front of us after the game to show their appreciation for all of us coming out to support them–all Hawaii fans can go down to the railing of row 1 and give high 5’s to the players; hopefully after a big win!

Good to hear others are getting reps. Everyone has to step up.
I’m confident they will do well!

  10. Shoko October 15, 2014 9:01 am

Is it me or is there more hurricanes headed to Hawaii this year?

Might have to search online to find out.

  11. Kuzzin October 15, 2014 9:03 am

Can Joey get a medical hardship and have one more season next year if he doesn’t play the rest if this year? Any type of broken injury and only played a third of the season can apply for one. That would be something though for next year. Max Wittek at QB Joey at RB the receiving core believing they can do their jobs and get open.

  12. Tempmanoa October 15, 2014 9:08 am

The big thing with DUI is not that you do or do not get caught, but that you should not do it. That means you can party all you want, BUT if you drink, do not drive. Too many kids– some of them high school football players in Hawaii, get killed driving or riding with drinking drivers, or kill others. They or their victims die or they have lifetime chronic injuries, concussions, brain damage, limping and difficulty walking, scars, nasty compound fractures that can never be made like new again. I don’t judge the drinking, I judge the driving while intoxicated (as apparently was the case with Joey– he blew 2X the legal limit).

  13. (Jesse)James October 15, 2014 9:42 am

    Good morning Tsiakos!!!

Good to see some R&R for the starters…and the increased reps for developing players. We’ll need all hands for the rest of the season. Study film….study study study….and play hard this Saturday…!!!

  14. (Jesse)James October 15, 2014 9:49 am

The thing with DUI though, and I’m not saying it’s right (and in Joey’s case he apparently blew 2x the legal limit), that under the law, anything above .08 is considered drunk driving. That doesn’t necessarily mean you’re impaired. The breathalyzer will read .08 after drinking just 1.5 bottles of beer in 1 hour. When I worked in EMS, we actually tested breathlyzers with HPD and learned about how they worked by drinking and then blowing….we also took agility and other tests to see how alcohol impaired people and how that correlated to breathalyzer tests. None of my classmates showed any signs of impairment after 1.5 beers but all of us blew .081 or more, which would mean that legally, we were drunk and would be arrested for DUI.

Not condoning drinking and driving, but every situation is different. Like I said yesterday, life lesson learned. Learn from your mistakes and move on…JMHO

    🙂

  15. Shoko October 15, 2014 9:56 am

I would think getting into a car after drinking and knowing its against the law can be considered impaired judgement. 🙂

  16. Old Diver October 15, 2014 9:57 am

Looks like UH has determined Joey is guilty. Wonder how he plans to plead at the hearing.

  17. Shoko October 15, 2014 10:01 am

I don’t think it would be a bad idea for Joey to get an attorney.

I know Dunnachie got an attorney. I remember his attorney actually sent a letter to Chow and Apple to reinstate Alex until after the case went to court when it was first announced he was going to be suspended three games.

  18. NorthShoreFan October 15, 2014 10:11 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

boolakanaka…#6 … yup, such is the reality of the situation.

jj, got dat right. Not sure how they came up with that number .08 but they must have had a lot of input from MAD and hopefully a lot of science was involved. People react differently to different stimuli. Not all react he same. I remember at the ball park there used to be multiple games on Saturday & Sundays. Guys used to imbibe between double, triple headers and still perform on the field.

    Heal up Warriors and IMUA!

  19. NorthShoreFan October 15, 2014 10:12 am

some peeps could get busted to drinking cough meds. if the test was done right away.

  20. NorthShoreFan October 15, 2014 10:15 am

like an attorney once told me, you could just have a smidgen of alcohol test up and they could find you guilty. then you would need to appeal and it’ll take more money to be found not guilty.

  21. Brad October 15, 2014 10:49 am

Do you think Joey can get a medical hardship waiver for this season?
Or did he use one up already? I mean he’s still injured and didn’t play 20% of the season yet. Just keep him out and if he can come back next year with Wittek that would be abunai!

  22. Inyoface. October 15, 2014 11:32 am

    Reilly taking first reps?

  23. Andrew October 15, 2014 11:44 am

Easy solution for future situations.. taxi. Have fun and no need worry about anyone having to drive. As long as you have a working smart phone and a debit/credit card you can use Uber/Lyft and don’t even have to worry about having any cash on you at the time. I use them all the time when I go out and it sure makes things easier when taking the possibility of a DUI out of the equation.

I like though that coach gave them contacts for if they do need someone to pick them up, they can call anytime. And he even insisted that he would pick them up himself.

  24. whitey October 15, 2014 11:49 am

what happened to the word “responsibility”????

  25. NotNasti October 15, 2014 11:57 am

I don’t know about you guys, but my coach/parent is the last person I would call if I got sh!% faced and couldn’t drive home . . . even if it was a “no questions asked” offer. Still no excuse, though. Always go out with a designated driver.

  26. Andrew October 15, 2014 12:05 pm

Yeah I wouldn’t call them either. haha

  27. A-House October 15, 2014 12:20 pm

should the Hawaii Legislature revisit the .08 rule? if yes, why? if no, why not?

circumstances have changed over the years with HPD and their stopping citizens for whatever reason(s) – a near collision with an officers vehicle and a statement like, “you almost hit me”, “I had the right of way”

conversely, I have seen “cops” watch drivers run red light and sit in their car; saw a pedestrian walk on a don’t walk signal with cars passing her in the crosswalk and a motorcycle cop approached her, scolded her, and drove away.

there is so much inconsistency in how each officer handles what is witnessed and how the communicate with the public

HPD officers attitude(s) has also changed into more of an “antagonistic” mode – why? is their new mantra “get the bastard”?

is there any wonder why the general public have a negative attitude?

one of my best friends brother is now retired, HPD SGT, who gave his calling card with “Please extend all courtesies to my brother” written on the back – friend got pulled over twice for speeding, flashed the card, and police officer let him go

how fo act should I get pulled over???

  28. st. anthony trojan October 15, 2014 12:20 pm

as ne one who has ‘lifted’ a few.. the hardest thing in the world to do to a friend..is asking them to give u the car keys…talk about pakiki head…

with all that was in ‘place’ for him to take advantage off…he still was ‘pakiki’ head… n thought he can still do himself..get home safely…

first rule is when going out for a few or more is…’never argue with a drunk’….second is…see the first rule…

me is just happy that he got home safe… n only dui…is really nothing to get to excited about…cuz 20 years from now..he will be writing here on this blog ..like so many have above… how it was ‘back then’….thank god it turned out ok…

he should go find that cop n thank him…n be glad he is safe…
that would be showing some remorse for his actions…

  29. Maddog50 October 15, 2014 12:32 pm

Would not mind going back to football–how is Reilly looking? Prayer? What the Rb situation? Are the DL and OL looking to be at full strength. Line is down to 8. Gotta contain Pumphrey. They did have 4 turnovers in first half and real success came against porous defenses. One thing for sure whoever suits up and contributes this is their game their team for that moment—they decide by effort/desire the outcome. Go Warriors

  30. Maddog50 October 15, 2014 12:33 pm

    Supposed to be Prater

  31. islandman October 15, 2014 12:42 pm

A birdie said Ikaika can’t move, is that true ? And that Reilly will/ may start.

Is Hunter Hughes back with the team >

  32. Tiki808 October 15, 2014 12:55 pm

Why not just use either Beau Reilly or Max Wittek? Use their Red Shirt year. Leaves 1 more year less for both of them. Or for Max, just 1 year and maybe even 6 games total in his last year. Graham is out. Ikaika is still struggling to adjust to winning games. They want to play to win. Why bother with forms at this point in the season? Just pay and play, if they’re good enough to play and win.

  34. Maddog50 October 15, 2014 1:04 pm

I believe a few years back the old DUI limit in Hawaii was 1.0.
There was some pressure from MADD to lower it to 0.8 as it was in some States on the Mainland. The real change came when the Federal Government threatend to withhold Federal Highway Funds from any State that did not adhere to the 0.8 limit. Hawaii, not wanting to lose Federal Highway Funds dropped their limit to 0.8 also.

  36. Tiki808 October 15, 2014 1:16 pm

Who can run the ball for Hawai’i? Keelan Ewaliko has a concussion. St. Juste is the only one who stepped up along with Justin Vele taking some in. Full load of running. They just hope no more concussions, if they actually do reach 9-4 in the season and maybe a bowl appearance at the Hawai’i Bowl 2014 or some other bowl. I’d say what Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl if it weren’t for Sheraton backing UH football up with their name. It’s possible. If they do make it there, what do you charge per ticket to make it a successful event? “community college”

  37. bowwar October 15, 2014 1:21 pm

Injuries are a part of the game, so some players will need to “step-up” from the depth chart or play more minutes. I think we’re in pretty good shape except for QB and possibly, RB. In both cases, we’ll survive until people mend from their injuries, but it will mean limiting the playbook at times. I hope they put Daniel Lewis back in the backfield, as I think they have enough players on defense to play safety.

I wonder what has happened to Barry Higdon? He was highly touted and yet, I don’t see him on the depth chart for CB.

  40. Tiki808 October 15, 2014 1:40 pm

“Zippy’s” Can we support the Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl if Hawai’i does get there? Sponsors are few. It used to be Jeep Eagle Aloha Bowl under director Jim Donovan. June Jones came in and changed some rules and so Sheraton had to step in as a new name for the bowl game. Do you think Hawai’i residents might want to buy some tickets this year “if” they get there? It will be a waste of time for only 25,000 seats sold. 50,000 is the mark. Important revenue questions to ask from our local economic standpoint. Continue or not with the bowl games in Hawai’i?

  41. oldtimer808 October 15, 2014 2:07 pm

#35 Lakalaka has a concussion not Ewaliko.

  42. Tiki808 October 15, 2014 2:07 pm

“McDonald’s” I figured Waikiki will be the happening place December 24, 2014. What do you think this will mean? More money in our pockets if you’re one of the vendors. Mark Takai, Steve Uyehara, Ben Guiterez, Mufi Hannemann, Duke Aiona, Ron Mizutani, Howard Dyshefsky, and a host of other key names on TV are there for a purpose. I don’t think they’re doing anything to make the Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl game in Hawai’i a money winner. They have already got plane reservations to Las Vegas, Nevada for many Hawai’i fans. Competition is stiff in Hawai’i also to get the revenue. What are the key people doing for UH athletics? The ones you see on TV. Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl 2014

  43. KeleguenBinadu October 15, 2014 2:42 pm

Tiki, The Jeep Aloha Bowl is not related to the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl. The Aloha Bowl lost their name sponsor and the their bowl committee decided to move the bowl to San Francisco. But they lost their bowl certification before the move was complete, hence it is now defunct. The Oahu Bowl suffered a similar fate.

The Hawaii Bowl was formed by a different bowl committee when Hawaii became bowl eligible and were not invited to a bowl game, some said it was because Hawaii doesn’t travel well. The first title sponsor was ConAgra, then Sheraton, and is essentially run by ESPN Regional TV. No rules were changed as it is the bowl committee that dictated in the charter a “Hawaii Guarantee” with JJ’s influence of course. NCAA approved by certifying the bowl.

My concern is that there may be a possibility of this bowl leaving or folding every year Hawaii is not playing in it. We have not taken full advantage of having a guaranteed bowl game.

  44. st. anthony trojan October 15, 2014 2:52 pm

tiki808…you got sum good points there..
they need a marketing.. a good one.. to fill that place up…

Joe Buck on Kolten Wong: “There’s no hotter hitter in baseball right now.” Another home run for Kolten.

  46. Andrew October 15, 2014 3:18 pm

Without the Hawaii Bowl, I really don’t see UH getting into any bowls in the future unless they win the conference and are guaranteed a spot where the champion goes. The other bowls are able to choose and are not forced to take a certain team from the conference of ones that are eligible. They end up choosing on geographic location, ability of the fan base to travel, and TV markets.

  47. Jack Flash October 15, 2014 3:27 pm

Without the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, the Las Vegas bowl would be an obvious choice should Hawaii become bowl eligible. Hawaii fans travel very well to games on the 9th island.
    GO WARRIORS! GO BOWS!

  48. Andrew October 15, 2014 3:29 pm

    Snow Bowl…

  52. Andrew October 15, 2014 3:50 pm

Oh maybe it is the Emerald bowl. Either way, I think there may be many years where UH would be left out. I would def travel to the Las Vegas bowl and the Emerald bowl is in SF right?

Challenges, it’s good for the team. We have some live untested arms. Prater, his video this past summer impressed me with not much body fat plus, mentally trained by our own Arm Forces. Reilly, what a great opportunity, I know you’re ready! As for Ikaika, great game, keep it up, I still believe in you! As a team, your depth and brotherhood is going to make or break this season. The bench gotta pump up the starters on the road trip, really didn’t see it at home. Challenges, I think we’ll do just fine!

  55. Tiki808 October 15, 2014 4:13 pm

Wimps! What next for Taylor Graham? Going back to Ohio State to teach PE? I hope not. They need real teachers, not flawed PE and then become family man. What a puke to see? Malasadas and that? Give the students a break. Wimp.

  56. Tiki808 October 15, 2014 4:16 pm

I saw in a forum recently that they were looking for PE teachers/computer teachers somewhere in the south Los Angeles area. It was on a forum last year and he was trying to get a job as this one with head coach of the football. You kind of have to be smarter. The students are smarter than you in high school. What’s up with the teaching? Taylor Graham too? Puke!

  57. Tiki808 October 15, 2014 4:29 pm

If you were one of the smarter students in high school, honor roll list and only to find out your career after was stifled by retarded teachers in high school, you’re not alone. Joey Iosefa, Taylor Graham, and others who desire positions as above are the only people they know. I can assure you as an older person since high school, that “Chinese” student from China or Taiwan is a smarter person than this man or his teachers in high school. What is my point? Make sure they get regular jobs and not ruin the academic side of a person’s career or ruin the system.

  58. 4-Prong October 15, 2014 4:30 pm

i’m not saying that driving while trashed is okay (no idea how drunk iosefa was when he got pulled over. a DUI doesn’t necessarily mean he was significantly impaired. if he was obviously sloshed and not fit to even get behind the wheel, that’s a very poor decision on his part). i’m saying that everyone getting all hu hu about iosefa’s DUI is pretty dumb. We’ve pretty much all done it (whether you were a college athlete or not). Go out to the club or a bar, or wherever some of the people went to 80 years ago back in their youth, stop drinking at last call. dance, talk story, whatever. go eat at likelike drive inn, or waffle house (if you played on the mainland) then go home.

that doesn’t make it right. he made a bad decision and he got pulled over. but this doesn’t mean he’s an irresponsible guy. or that he when his friends and gf or whoever were like “let’s go out tonight” he shoudl’ve been like “oh no. sorry. i need to stay home. and study my playbook. and pray. and drink a protein shake. because i’m a football robot that goes to school and goes to practice and that’s it.” he’s a kid. he’s a person. he got caught. he’ll face the consequences. it’s unfortunate that UH will lose their only offensive weapon and possibly lose the offensive momentum they got while coming from behind and beating an awful (but still FBS) football team, but life will go on.

It’s a taste of Los Angeles and San Diego, but not Hawai’i. They need to have fun also. But how far can they go before they start serious practice? Want to win, but want to have fun also. What a situation to be in if you’re football star. Choices, plans, money, decisions, all of them. Wouldn’t have it any other way. Like Like is lighted.

  67. pollypicador October 16, 2014 1:52 am

I think the NCAA, in general, should take a closer look at athletes (football players) that commit crimes.

I think that if a person’s character is suspect in one area it’s possible that it can be suspect in another area, namely if a person that has the audacity to cheat (or cross the line) of the legal system can that same person have the same character flaws to cheat the integrity of the game in the form of taking banned substances or even point shaving. I say it’s possible, and would venture to say that the odds are stacked higher than the athlete that walks a straight line regarding the legal system.

The NCAA needs to look at athletes that emit red flags (athletes that have no disregards of following the law).

An athlete that has broken the law, in my eyes, is sending out a red flag and should be scrutinized deeper for clues that may lead to the integrity of the game being compromised. To me this makes perfect sense. Double check the unannounced drug testing, double check the films (i.e., a play maker that has the propensity of turning the ball over a lot), financial records, paper trails…double check everything. The integrity of football, all sports, needs to be preserved.

The NCAA needs to open cans of worms. It needs to be the overseer of the integrity of the game. It starts with looking at red flags.

  68. Tom October 16, 2014 3:52 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

Whether the line is at .08, 1.0, 2.9 doesn’t really matter. If someone wants to get smashed, that is his/her problem. The law is concerned as to the potential of danger to others if the driver in impaired and has a dangerous instrumentality,, such as a vehicle, airplane, boat.

. The determination is the standard that the law says is the impair point. Somewhat like speeding – if 45mph is the determining point, anything above 45 is speeding.

It is the potential of danger where the person is in control of a dangerous instrumality (which an automobile, airline etc) that the law is concerned about. If you pass out in your own home, there is no danger to the public at large. If you pass out or lose motor control or judgment while operating a airplane, or car to a ship, innocent people can end up having a very bad day.

  69. Maddog50 October 16, 2014 4:17 am

Ok so the line is now at 7……give’m a couple for overall performance and a couple for being at home while we are away. A lot of things fuel effort, adversity….postive thought…..being dismissed or lack of respect by opponents or outside sources. This game again falls squarely on special teams being a little more than special for Field Pos. The D giving s huge 4 quarter effort in stopping their running game….the O has to score at least 3 X. That being said we are in this start to finish. Make Jeremy “Mouse” eat his words….me I just wanna Win!!! Go Warriors!!!!!

ST: is the team leaving today–is it a non-stop to San Diego–and what time do they leave and arrive?

Does anyone know what the status is for Lakalaka? Is he still out with a concussion or has he been cleared yet?

Spread is at 7 points after opening at 9 1/2. I feel confident we could pull out a road win. Stay together play smart and within the system. Take what is given to us and don’t force anything like we did in Houston.

Ikaika took his first practice reps today, per Stephen on Bobby C show. Beau had been taking the reps and still is.

Team success from the Wyoming game-

A season high of 6 offensive plays of 20 yards or more.

4 different Warriors scoring their first career touch downs.

    Notes-

San Diego running back, Pumphrey, ran for 246 yards against New Mexico last weekend. As a team San Diego ran close to 400 yards.

UH is tied for No. 6 nationally in 3-and-outs (6.0 avg. per game) and No. 11 nationally in 3rd down defense (28.7%)

On the season the percentage of rushing plays to passing plays is 50.47 to 49.53.

Opp 3D Conv % 30.67% . (this is a good stat, ranks UH around tenth nationally).

The above link gives side by side comparisons of both teams. I think it’s pretty good site. You can also find practically every type of stat on this site. The subscription price to the prediction and deeper analysis of the outcome of the game is pretty reasonable.

The next curiosity to read about the teams travel plans. Fly to LA and bus the 120 miles to San Diego (Chow says this is a good bonding experience for the player…no). Or fly straight in…yes.

I think that our team will be in a great state of mind and will play well. The big concern is to keep Ikaika standing upright and in the game, therefore I believe that we will be running the ball more utilizing our RBs along with short, quick developing pass plays to minimize his sack exposure. TE may play a larger role this game. Linebackers will have to play tough to stop their strong running game. I look forward to a exciting hard fought game ending with a WIN! Go Bows Go!

Ikaika is hurting. Coaching staff unsure how long he can play, so I am guessing Beau Reilly will start and see if the Warriors can stay in the game. I normally wouldn’t see this as a big problem because the Warriors count on an effective running game; however, Steven Lakalaka has not yet been medically cleared to play after showing signs of a concussion during the Wyoming game. So this is now a compounded problem.

This was the perfect time to install the triple option package with Ewaliko as QB; as a surprise to SDSU. We could have used all the backup players for this package to open the game; and mix in a few trick plays with passes downfield. Just run it for one series until they can stop it. That would boost the morale of all the backup players, who might never play in the game! It would be a lot of fun for the starters too; as well as the fans who want entertainment!!!

Good Morning Tsaikos!!! Hope everyone has a great day…stay safe!!!

I thought I read that Lakalaka was cleared to play for this game??? Or did I just imagine that. I think we’ll need to rotate him, St. Juste, and Vele just to mix things up. Vele is a big back that has the right attitude about securing the ball. I think the fumble was just an exchange problem.

Anyways, play smart, play hard, and play like a champion today!!!!

Regarding the bowls, there was a recent scramble for conferences to obtain control of selection for some of the lesser bowls. But the SEC beat them out. The SEC now controls the team selections for six of the “minor” bowls.

ST tweeted that Lakalaka is practicing. Lataimua is also practicing.
