We’re open for questions

It’s Labor Day, but we’re open for questions.

Fire away.

We’ll try to see what we can answer, then print them on Wednesday here and in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

    Happy Labor Day Tsaikos.

  2. Jeezy33 September 5, 2016 12:19 pm

Will there be a big emphasis in cornerback and defensive line for 2017 recruiting class? It appears that we need an upgrade in speed and cover skills at corner and more physicalality on the defensive line to match up with tougher opponents. Lacking a true pass rush as well.

  3. Warrior Dave September 5, 2016 12:19 pm

Any thought by the coaching staff to use the concept of having role players learn 4-6 plays extremely well and just use then when these plays are appropriate?

The announcers said that Michigan uses it to keep incoming freshmen focused in the games as their plays will be called. Boise St also uses this or did under Peterson.

  4. Letsgowarriors September 5, 2016 12:21 pm

    Anybody inquiring about transferring home?

  5. Mike96816 September 5, 2016 12:23 pm

Has true freshman Jeremiah Pritchard jumped ahead of Mageo and Mulunga at the SLB position?

  6. Letsgowarriors September 5, 2016 12:24 pm

Status on Marcus Armstrong-brown? I assume Eugene Ford and Naotala are greyshirts?

  7. waryor September 5, 2016 12:26 pm

Are power 5 teams interested in taking advantage of the Hawaii exemption to play Hawaii one week early?

  8. Jeezy33 September 5, 2016 12:41 pm

    6. Truly think Hawaii can do better with 2017 seniors and jc sophomores over those 2.

  9. H-Man September 5, 2016 12:46 pm

How did the team come out of the Michigan game, injury-wise? Confidence-wise? Just hoping there’s still a spring in their step with swagger.

  10. Markazulu September 5, 2016 12:46 pm

Are we still doing a pregame haka?

  11. P. Ness September 5, 2016 12:53 pm

    Are these questions for Rolo?
    1) No pre-game Haka? Or only saving those for victories? Or no Haka at all?
    2) Why do away with the Warrior Walk? Sure it’s not as exciting with little bit fans, but it’s still a simple/easy “tradition” that can eventually build up.
    3) What kind of lasting impact does this type of loss have, knowing that we just didn’t have the firepower to be relatively competitive and that the margin between our program and one of the top programs in the nation is as wide as the miles the team traveled the first two weeks?
    4) Two games in now, what have you learned about what it takes to be a head coach?

  12. Markazulu September 5, 2016 1:05 pm

Any players standing out to him on film so far?
Whats been the hardest part of being a head coach so far?

  13. rocky September 5, 2016 1:09 pm

At the end of the 1st half we had success airing it out, why didn’t we continue that the rest of the game?

  14. WarriorNY September 5, 2016 1:26 pm

What does Coach Rolo think of the playing the Power 5 conferences? Does he have the Pat Hill mentality of “anywhere/anytime” and collect a paycheck? Or would he rather an easier schedule to gain wins and bowl eligibility?

  15. Tempmanoa September 5, 2016 1:26 pm

We’re there any players who played well against Michigan (besides our fantastic kicker)?
What is the single most important thing we need to do improve now? And any examples of this?

  16. azwarrior22 September 5, 2016 1:40 pm

Why don’t we make a QB change because experience does not equate to wins? We need a QB that can inspire the team.

  17. kev-1 September 5, 2016 2:06 pm

What is it about Dru Brown that has you hesitating making him the starter?

What happened to all of that hype we were fed last season about Aaron Zwhalen being the real deal?

  18. z September 5, 2016 2:07 pm

Why was Michigan defenders able to get off of our blockers so easily? Why weren’t our players able to do so?

  19. cocobean September 5, 2016 2:14 pm

I remember at a call the coach show in 2006. JJ commented that Colt could run about 40% of the offense so watch him next year. My question to Rolo would be how much of the offense can Brown run at this point.

It’s one thing to study the play book but it takes reps to “get it.”
    Also……

Brown has shown an ability to make plays outside of the game plan much like Colt scrambling to extend plays. Does this ability at some time trump experiene.

  20. Jeezy33 September 5, 2016 2:21 pm

    18. You really need the Coaches to answer that simple question ?? Haha

  21. cocobean September 5, 2016 2:25 pm

BTW. I’m in no way advocating a QB change. I have no clear idea how Brown will play as a starter. Can he run the scripted game plan, can he make good decisions and can he take care of the ball.

  22. warriorfan September 5, 2016 2:29 pm

How long do you stick with IW?
Where is the run-n-shoot that Rolo said we would see again?
How much is Rolo influencing the play calling during the game?

  23. dopaco24 September 5, 2016 2:41 pm

    cocobean #19,

I know that was a 2005 call the coach show, and I believe it was after the Idaho shutout. In 2005, Colt was scrambling all over the field trying to make plays. It couldn’t have been 2006. That 2006 team was one of the most efficient offenses in FBS history. If the 2006 team had the same NCAA clock rules as either the 2005 team or even 2007 team, Hawaii could have averaged nearly 700 yards a game, and possibly could have gone undefeated.

  24. Balko September 5, 2016 3:12 pm

Civil Beat is reporting staffing cuts coming to the Star Advertiser, any idea how the personnel cuts will affect the sports’ section staff and reporting (travel, etc)?

  25. whitey September 5, 2016 3:13 pm

Will we see more players get game experience or going to continue with the same old excuse that they are not playing because they lack experience. These next 2 games are preseason and do not count for any thing unless we’re a top 25 or bottom 25 teams, so why not find out who are game players. How are your players going to get game experience if they keep getting splinters on their okoles.

  26. whitey September 5, 2016 3:21 pm

Going in for 1 play ain’t going to get experience or motivation.

  27. CentralPA September 5, 2016 3:39 pm

I attended the game at Ann Arbor and was trying to gauge the attitude and spirit of the team. They were a bit jetlagged and spent from the Cal game but you didn’t see a lack of effort and or attempted execution.

  28. Bimbam September 5, 2016 4:20 pm

The problem with our returning QB’s is they have been taught to be DROP BACK
PASSERS. After you have been taught to do something for 3 or 4 years it is difficult to change. The two JC QB’s do not have that problem. They played in offenses similar to what the Coaches are teaching. Dru Brown started and was successful at one of the better JC programs in California. He has the most experience with the desired offense. He will become our starting QB, the sooner the better.

  29. islandman September 5, 2016 4:21 pm

In the 3rd quarter at 4th and 1 at the Michigan 25, after a timeout, why was the play, it looked like, Saint Juste up the middle ( for no gain). That was the 10th play in a 53 yard drive, from the UH 22.

  30. H-Man September 5, 2016 4:50 pm

islandman, good question. Short yardage guys are Lakalaka, Tuiasoa and Davis.

  31. Akamai Okole September 5, 2016 4:50 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

  32. Akamai Okole September 5, 2016 4:51 pm

How different a perspective of the game at field level

  36. Akamai Okole September 5, 2016 4:54 pm

How long was the charter flight to Ann Arbor? Back?

  37. islandman September 5, 2016 5:07 pm

H-Man , has Davis played this year yet ?
Coach Rolovich, do you like laulau ?

  38. Akamai Okole September 5, 2016 5:12 pm

If you polish crap. What do you get?

    nahnahnah…that one is a gimme.

    Shiny crap.

  39. 808 September 5, 2016 5:21 pm

Is DB that so far behind in learning the playbook?

Having a dual threat QB seems like it can add another dimension to the offense.

I hope IW has a breakout game on Saturday. Maybe this game is what he needs as a starter to have a breakout year.

  40. HawaiiMongoose September 5, 2016 5:26 pm

Is it true that Duquesne has been signed as UH’s 13th opponent in 2018, in a game to be played on September 22nd? If so, why did we settle for scheduling 13 games in a row with no bye, instead of using the expanded Hawaii exemption to arrange a game for the last Saturday in August?

  41. uhfan10 September 5, 2016 5:32 pm

can anyone tell me how I can watch this weeks game ? Besides oceanics ppv

  42. kalua pig September 5, 2016 5:33 pm

did you put dru brown in because ikaika had shoulder problems,or because ikaika wasn’t playing good?

  43. not Sean September 5, 2016 5:38 pm

Late in the 2nd quarter when Michigan was up 35-0, Hawaii went to open sets and Michigan’s linebackers went soft on pressure allowing the passing game to get some rhythym. Was this because of:
    1. The defense adjusting to Hawaii’s formations?
    2. Michigan calling off the dogs?
    3. The personnel package Michigan had in the game at the time?

  44. 808_Ballin September 5, 2016 5:41 pm

Any plans for football facility upgrades or renovations in the near future???

  45. islandman September 5, 2016 5:50 pm

    40. per a poster on another forum: ” Guessing you don’t watch the Nick Rolovich show.He was pulled according to Rolo because he was taking too much hits and at that point, it was better to just see what Dru could do because they have a long season ahead.”

  46. hitmanhart September 5, 2016 5:53 pm

1,why no melvin davis on short yardage plays? is he going to red shirt this year?
2 ,isssaiah bernard playing this year or red shirt ? if playing why no game time yet?
freddie holly III , cole mcDonald, red shirt this year?
why only dru brown and not aaron zwahlen or beau reilly got some playing time?
ammon barker is a big boy !! but seem to slow to get open other should see time as a wideout !!

  47. Warrior Fan September 5, 2016 5:55 pm

Are you going to make any changes to personnel in the secondary or lb group?

Is Dru Brown going to play this week?

Why did Dru Brown play over Aaron Zwhalen?

Are you going to drop the “Rainbow” & just be called Warriors?

  48. H-Man September 5, 2016 5:57 pm

islandman, I didn’t know so I checked the game stats. To my surprise, he doesn’t have a carry.

  49. islandman September 5, 2016 6:24 pm

The stats say Ammon only has one catch so far and was not a starter in the Michigan game. Instead UH started two TE’s, Chung and Torres, WR Kemp and FL Ursua. Somebody said Bernard was injured ?
Thanks, H-Man, for the info on Mel.

  50. uhfan10 September 5, 2016 6:32 pm

where can I watch this weeks game online?

  51. hilosupaman September 5, 2016 6:59 pm

    Coach Rolo,

No questions just want to let you know there are still believers amongst us. IMUA WARRIORS

  52. burro sabio September 5, 2016 8:09 pm

In what states will Mayur and Kefense be recruiting?

  53. kalua pig September 5, 2016 8:14 pm

    #42 im asking rolo.

  54. D-Bone September 5, 2016 8:25 pm

Jeezy33 you could have Deion Sanders at one corner and Darrell Revis at the other, If you have no pressure on the QB it makes no difference. Cal and Mich QBs had an eternity in the pocket. Absolutely no pressure whatsoever!!! Not to mention where the heck are the Hawaii Linebackers….talk about slow and shotty tackling. The Safeties and Cornerbacks are left out there to dry!!!

  55. H-Man September 5, 2016 10:00 pm

Rolo answered one of the questions in his email letter to the season ticket holders.

Re Haka or Hawaiian Ha’a: “If we get permission from the creators/elders, our team will perform a Ha‘a composed by local leaders in the Hawaiian culture who sacrificed many hours in its creation. It was written especially for our team and has many references specific to Manoa valley. We will only perform it if we all do it, and are flawless in it’s execution.”

  56. H-Man September 5, 2016 10:03 pm

On the subject of UT Martin, this is what Rolo had to say: “We will play our first home game this weekend. This may be the most important game of our season as UT Martin gave Cincinnati all they could handle last week. I look forward to an electric environment at Aloha Stadium.”

  57. Ohana Hawaii September 5, 2016 11:14 pm

Rolovich should really change the quarterback from this moment! He have to look at this that? Woolsey isn’t a quarterback! Healthy or not! He never did anything for his four years at University of Hawaii football program. Even when Chow were there!. The peoples in knows that! When Rolovich had chosen Woolsey to start the season with him. I know that? UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII will really seriously sick will bad!

  58. truegreen September 5, 2016 11:40 pm

What did Coach Harbaugh say to you after the game? Seemed like he had a lot more to say than just the token, “Great game! Good luck the rest of the season.”

  59. Coach DB September 6, 2016 3:29 am

Why when your down over 50 points in the second half and you have no chance to win the game don’t you GET THE SECOND TEAM SOME REPS especially on defense!!! Get these young guys some reps in the BIG VENUES so that the Mountain West will be a easy?

  60. islandman September 6, 2016 6:29 am

    49. kalua – see from about 8:20 of the video here:

More answers, Call the Coach i think tonight.

  61. RSYmoney September 6, 2016 7:26 am

Coach, Can we go really up tempo after a bye week to catch a good defensive team off guard? Like how Miss used against a great FSU defense and Houston against 2nd ranked Oklahoma?

  62. Shoko September 6, 2016 8:10 am

Well, since most of the good questions have already been asked, I would like to make a request, yet I don’t know who has control over releasing post game pressers.

Can someone please post the full post game press interview on UH Athletics website (or YouTube) instead of the edited short clips?

    Thanks in advance. : )

  63. 808warriorfan September 6, 2016 8:42 am

At the MWC preseason conference in Las Vegas Coach “Rolo” answered a question by saying he wanted to see how this team would react when adversity hits. Would they go back to the “blame game” and point fingers or come together as a team and work it out ???

Well the 2 toughest games of the season (not counting Arizona and Boise State) are behind us which included 21,000 plus miles of travel behind the team, how did the team react, adjust to adversity. Is that part of the Culture still a work in progress or are you satisfied thus far that the team is sticking together ???

  64. WarriorNY September 6, 2016 8:47 am

So what do you guys think of the coach answering questions? I think it’s pretty cool…

  65. Rebelwarrior September 6, 2016 9:21 am

Since majority of the country is running a variety of spread offense. From spread to pass/run type to no huddle. You seen the evolution/cyclical form of the spread happening now. From spread to pass set up running game to zone read option no huddle, run pass/screen option, now to third level reads (safety)Which bring us back to the Shoot. Coach Rolo would you commit to it? Wouldn’t it give you an edge of finding more slot/running backs types that has hands vs hybrid type HB/TE that is hard to find. Also were seeing a lot more Hybrid QB types because of the evolution of the game. Shoot+QB Scrambler type= Dangerous! Now that is the ultimate equalizer!

  66. turfwar September 6, 2016 9:24 am

When reading about the game the next day why is it so rare to see comments about Hawaii from the opposing coach? Those are always more interesting for me than those that come from the Hawaii coaches which are usually so predictable.

  67. z September 6, 2016 9:43 am

I am confident that coach Lempa will fix things. I also agree with him about number 7. He seems to be where the ball is. He has a backup middle linebacker who used to be like that in highschool. Our defense will be better.

Nice picture of Kemp in this morning’s paper. Sure looked like holding. Or maybe he really likes Marcus.

  68. Inyoface September 6, 2016 10:08 am

Kemp should’ve complained to the refs when not called for that obvious interference play.

  69. 808warriorfan September 6, 2016 10:08 am

    #59 … “WarriorNY” … I agree … too bad he can’t answer ’em all …

  70. Bryson September 6, 2016 10:29 am

    Warriors or Rainbows?

  71. Maddog50 September 6, 2016 10:32 am

    Status of Tito and JGW

  72. M L Warrior September 6, 2016 11:06 am

Why is Matt Norman wearing #90, is he still in the rotation in the oline?

  73. H-Man September 6, 2016 11:22 am

A question for coach Lempa. The defense gave up a lot in both games. Their performance was a result of the new 4-3 scheme? Not enough time with this alignment? Not enough depth? Nervousness? A combination? Other?

  74. Rodney September 6, 2016 11:24 am

    What’s Rolo assesment on
    Using Issaih Bernard at WR
    to stretch it vertically?
What are we doing to fix
    Front 7 on D

  75. Stephen Tsai September 6, 2016 11:27 am

  76. clyde September 6, 2016 11:28 am

Question: What was the total net proceeds from the first two games of the season, and will that money go to the school’s general fund or directly to the athletic department’s coffers?
