We’re back

It took a little bit, but I can feel my toes and fingers again, so let’s re-open the blog.

And we begin with a contest: Two tickets to Sunday’s Na Koa football banquet.

To enter, please post: Aloha, Rainbow Warrior seniors

You may enter multiple times, but you can’t pledge your winnings to someone else, such as: “If I win, please give my tickets to Kate Upton …” OK, you actually can give your tickets to Kate Upton, if she shows, but that’s the lone exception.

Avis will choose a winner.

* * * * *

Yeah, yeah. We always hear people say So-and-So should play more. Well, So-and-So gets another chance with today’s scrimmage for redshirts and developing and under-used players. First snap is around 5, or so. You’re invited.

I think anyone on the UH roster could have done just as good on defense as the 1st team did against Wyoming.

  2. Ipu Man November 25, 2013 8:14 am

Best game ever, tho a loss. Thanks UH for the effort. Go Bows! Beat Army, gently.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Great game by the Wahine on Saturday night. Great Senior Night celebration, as usual. Most, if not all, the Warrior vb team came out to support the girls, especially Hartong.

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

Wyoming exploited Hawaii’s secondary defense by having the safeties defend against the deep pass. How did they do that?

  13. PurpleMaple November 25, 2013 8:32 am

Emily has a slight lead over Cloe Mann of Florida, so please vote. Every vote helps.

18: thanks for the tip! She has done so much for the program. A great teammate and leader. She is always encouraging and congratulating her teammates…. Even during the senior night program, after receiving a thunderous ovation, she quickly moved to receive her senior plaque and flowers. She could have stood and received a much longer acknowledgement from the fans, but that isn’t her style. She is the definition of class.

  24. Stephen Tsai November 25, 2013 9:12 am

    Inyoface
Grimes has not been on the active roster for six weeks. So, the answer would be: No.

    Alooooooha, Rainbow Warrior seniors!

  34. Derek November 25, 2013 10:07 am

UConn won their first game. They are now down to the final four who are winless. Hawaii, Miami-Ohio, Southern Miss, and Georgia State. I say a 4 team playoff of the bottom ten.
Losers advance the championship game. Winners are eliminated. The team that loses 2 games is declared national champions and gets to go to Disneyland, or Disney World. While there the team is honored at the so-called best irrelavent team in the country and a speech will be given by also loser, Mitt Romney who will say that conservative play calling will win games, once every 100 years.

  35. Whats up November 25, 2013 10:14 am

Hawaii should beat Army at Aloha Stadium, just as long as the Chow and Kaumeyer don’t let the players down by game mismangement overall. The young Hawaii Football players had a tough start to the year this season and some really heartbreaking close losses all season. But I got to give it to the young men they played there okoles off and held there own against teams that had more game experienced Senior/Junior laden teams like Utah State, SDSU, SJSU, UNLV, Wyoming, Fresno State, Oregon State; etc.

  36. Rite80 November 25, 2013 10:23 am

We can argue won-loss record, coaching hires, poor decisions on the field when discussing giving Chow a third year. What we can’t argue is Norm Chow has lost the confidence of many fans based on attendance, loss in season ticket holders and a projected further loss in season tickets renewals next year. This loss in confidence is a major step towards Chow’s firing whether this year or next.

  37. NotNasti November 25, 2013 10:28 am

  39. innocent observer November 25, 2013 10:33 am

chow made two huge critical errors in the game. first, he called time out with about 13 seconds to go in the 4th quarter after they made a lst down. he should have the qb spike the ball and preserve 11 seconds for at least 2 pass plays as they needed about 20 yards to get into field gold range. by calling time out, he squandered a chance to a field goal try and possibly win the game in regulations. second, he should have kicked the field goal instead of trying to run the ball on 4th down. many coaches will agree that you need to get points in overtime even though it is only a field goal. they were 4 or 5 yards away from the goal line, and if the defense knows that you will run the ball and to whom it will be given to, they will stack the defense; this is precisely what happened. if they kicked the field goal, it would force Wyoming to go for the touchdown to win or kick the field goal to get to the second overtime to win. you cannot assume that Wyoming will score a touchdown; and by running the ball on 4th down, you are sending a message that the defense is weak and could not hold Wyoming. if that is the thinking then no sense to play the overtime, you know that you will lose no matter what. these are just some of the many coaching lapses that the coaching staff made throughout the season, which contributed to the 0-11 record.

  40. BigWave96744 November 25, 2013 10:38 am

No wonder I didn’t see Tony Grimes suited up at the Colorado St and SDSU games.
    Hope he is ok…

    Stephen,
Are medically retired Seniors Chauncy Winchester-Makainai and Justin Clapp going to participate in the Senior Walk?

Also is the Senior Walk going to be before the kickoff, like last year?

  43. Stephen Tsai November 25, 2013 10:48 am

    Big Wave:
Medically retired players have the option of participating in the senior actvities. Whether they choose to do so is up to them.levi Legay did last year.

  44. Leahi2 November 25, 2013 10:50 am

We beat Army, at Army, a few years back on a last minute field goal. I’m sure they would like to reverse the results! I’m not a seer but you can just get the vibes. We lost to UNLV that way. Now how about our last loss to Wyoming? Or how about San Diego State and even Fresno State! Our team seems to know how to lose.

Coach Dick Tomey used to encourage his players to play hard stay close and beat the other team on the last play. It seems that nowadays the other teams in the league are doing it to us. Now if Army beats our team and we become 0-12, it will be happy Fred Von Appen Day!

Our won-loss record you can take with a grain of salt but what about our money belt?

  45. st. anthony trojan November 25, 2013 10:53 am

  46. markazulu November 25, 2013 11:00 am

This has been a entertaining season despite the record but in the end its all about wins and loses and 0-12 is not acceptable. I was high on our defense in the beginning but the fact that every team that has played us either matched or had there “BEST” game against us (2 of them with freshman QB) is ridiculous. I hope they can get there act together in the offseason the amount of talent brought in has me excited especially John Wa’a and Tuileta

  49. jmor56 November 25, 2013 11:16 am

Not sure how people can say great game. Have we lowered our expectations since losing seems to be a habit? Accepted the fact that we are losers? I see some great talent on the field but very poor coaching. We should not be 0-11 and this last loss is just another example of poor coaching and clock management. I will not accept a loss as a good game. The players and the fans deserve better.

  50. Slugger November 25, 2013 11:16 am

  52. st. anthony trojan November 25, 2013 11:20 am

Mentality like tomey.. n chow.. with cliches…..stay close in 4th quarter…n 10 against 11… for my thinking..is a losing attitude..

“stay close 4th quarter”…my gosh that is a two edge sword..good for one ..bad for other..if me was coach…would be..”men going in the 4th quarter, we are up 49 to 0… that to me is positive… wonder how Mr. Lombardi would answer that one if still alive, or Saban, or Red Hickey….or Bill Walsh…

“10 against 11” with that kind of mentatily… i guess all the great quarterbacks are not considered a “weapon”…. my gosh…tell to that to a defensive coach who ever coached against minnesotsa when “fran” was there… or steve young..or now kapernick..you can read reams n reams of print from defensive lineman..n their opinion on those type of “weapons”….should be… “12 against …11…. for a head coach…no disrespect to SS…HE IS THE CHOSEN ONE.. N HE GIVES HIS ALL EVERY GAME.. is all ne one could ask…

those two cliches.. are from a defeatist attitude.. how me thinks ne way…IMUA

  53. erich November 25, 2013 11:22 am

People who think replacing one coordinator will turn Chow into a winning coach. Here’s a flashback:

    http://archives.starbulletin.com/98/02/13/sports/satsports.html

“UH coach von Appen fires offensive coordinator”

“Tom Williams replaces Lindsey as defensive coordinator and graduate-assistant Troy Thomas becomes a full-time defensive coach.”

The problem is with Chow, not his coordinators.

And given Chow’s history with hiring coordinators, who knows what will happen. Maybe Chow will have to end up coaching the defense too after he fires his new coordinator before opening day.

X Lt, Double Tight, 35 Power (i.e., same play w/ TEs to get width on the DEs, Receiver split wide to take away playside CB, & TB cheat up 1-2 yds – that would’ve given us the TD (or at least 1st dwn) on that last play in OT!) Right call but better formation would’ve done it.

I luv Hawaii football, but in my gambling days, I remember the motto was never bet on a losing team, hoping that they will win for you. Best bet on the Warriors is a no bet. Just enjoy the game. Most of us thought that they would win as many as 6 games or more before the season started. How can you even think that they would win for you?

Mr. Mui…Shirt should arrive today….sent on Saturday. 🙂

  75. Think2Much November 25, 2013 2:12 pm

Big question is what happened on defense? Nobody scored 50 pts on the Warriors. Not USC, not SDSU, not Frenso. What changed that made the D like a wet paper towel? When the O scores 56 points, you expect to win. And that Wyoming player to stopped Iosepa in OT, he was completely unblocked. If the defense holds, and all the breaks go our way, we expect the W against Army.

  76. Old Diver November 25, 2013 2:27 pm

The screw up came on 4th down in overtime. Chow could see Wyoming had stacked the middle prior to the snap just like they did on 2nd and 3rd down. He should have called a timeout at that time to reassess the situation instead of wasting the timeout prior to Wyoming taking their first snap in overtime. These decisions happen quickly and is why having kids in the booth instead of an experienced eye hurts the team.

  77. BowforLife November 25, 2013 2:27 pm

Brett Smith is the real deal. He threw for nearly 400 yards and almost a 100 more on the ground against then, #18 Nebraska in Lincoln. The Cornhuskers “escaped” with a 37-34 win and absolutely could not stop the visiting team who gained 600 yards in offense. I’m surprised the Cowpokes haven’t had a better season. Hawaii’s inability to stop Wyoming in their home stadium is not that surprising. I’m pleased the Hawaii offense has improved over the course of the year and kept them in games. That wasn’t happening last year. I never thought Sean Shroeder would have a chance to throw for 3,000 yards in a season, but props to him and the rest of the offense…a good game against Army gets him to that mark!

  78. Derek November 25, 2013 2:32 pm

Don’t think a coach can make a difference in one year? Gene Chizek, Auburn 3-9 last year. Gus Malzahn, Auburn 10-1 this year. Can Chow do any better next year? The first 4 games on the schedule in 2014, home against Washington, home against Oregon State, home against a good FCS team Northern Iowa, at Colorado. I see the possibility of 0-4 going into
the conference slate and that’s always difficult. Could be 2-10 next year. And what about the Hawaii exemption of a 13th game? Oh, you don’t want to go 0-13! I hope people will be happy with a 2-10 season. I don’t. The sad truth is that the talent level is better this year than last year. The bottom line doesn’t indicate that and the fans and revenue is going down and down unless someone bring us a winner and bowl expectations. You want to wait one more year for Chow and Company? Me, I don’t. From day one, I didn’t think we should hire him to be coach. Who is the selection committee anyway!!!!! This university has a lot of bad karma.

If the defense plays the way it did from the Fresno game on giving up 500+ yards then next season is going to be a repeat of this season, with Hawaii only beating the FCS Northern Iowa. The offense is not the problem anymore like it was the first 3 games this season. Chows offense is moving the ball and scoring points, Kaumeyers defense is just friggin atrocious!

Chow needs to work on his head coaching duties, team game/clock management skills not his offense. The young Hawaii players are moving the ball on offense. Kaumeyer needs to do something to fix the porous defense or he needs to be replaced. The Army game will be huge for Kaumeyer!

    I AGREE!

  86. WWF November 25, 2013 3:49 pm

Chow said the biggest problem was not Laramie’s 7,220-foot elevation or the low-20s temperature.

“It was Brett Smith,” Chow said of Wyoming’s starting quarterback, who threw for 498 yards and seven touchdowns and rushed for 142 yards and a score. “His ability to run makes him more dangerous. His ability to stay alive in the pocket is really interesting. He avoided people. People missed tackles. He has a real uncanny ability to do that.”

Can we learn from that and improve our offense too next year, Coach?

  91. Manoa Mist November 25, 2013 4:34 pm

How come Grimes is not on the active roster? Was there a report about that?

  92. Leron November 25, 2013 4:34 pm

Random thought, but Sorry to hear the passing of TV personality Lyle Galdeira this morning. RIP Lyle.

  93. cocobean November 25, 2013 4:49 pm

#90. Graves went into spring camp as the #1 guy. From all accounts he played his way down the depth chart. It was noted he had problems with reads and accuracy. That he would take off without going through his progressions. Think he and Higgins existed camp as co #1s.

It was speculated on this blog that Chow was unwilling to go with a spread offense to fit Graves’s talents for fear that might set back the implementation of his WC/Pro set offense. At that time Chow had visions of chasing championships and thought he had the blue print for the type offense to accomplish that.

  94. jiminy cricket November 25, 2013 4:59 pm

Bring back June Jones. Hawaii is his destiny. Hawaii is his home.

  95. papajoe2 November 25, 2013 5:42 pm

Still wanting June Jones to come back? Come on man, let it rest already.

  96. Jonj November 25, 2013 5:47 pm

Like chow said without a mobile Qb we play 10 vs 11 the one man unblocked came off the right blitzing and made the play. Chows decision to run out of the pistol there was the problem Joey was 8 yds off the ball and by the time he go the ball the LB was there to stop him. Now if chow had decided to go play action on 2nd down after Joeys big run or maybe Wr slants since the box was stuffed. It shows the defense that chow might not go 3 runs in a row and they have to defend everything.

Next year, we will have very little experience in Coach Chow’s qb’s. So offense will suffer again and still be predictable. I wonder if it is still the same offense since his days at BYU? I recall when we played BYU with Chow, they used to run the ball in the beginning up the middle or just off tackle, then would throw the heck out of the ball with an occasional run here and there. It took UH 10 straight losses before we romped them 2 games in a row. We had a local boy there at running back (Atuaia?) who set all kinds of records here in high school, but, although he played, didn’t do too much there. If not for Iosefa, which everybody and their aunty know who is getting the ball on 1st down or running situations, we don’t have much coming back at running back next year too. I think we do have the talent, just not for Coach Chow’s system.

  101. Jonj November 25, 2013 5:55 pm

And if u run a quick pass play the chance of a sack is so minimal. Which was chows excuse. He plays scared ball! Especially when ur qb has 74% completions and 500 yds with 6tds!

Didn’t see the last game just caught the highlights. I got the impression it was hard to play defense on the road in high altitude at sub freezing temperatures. That aside I thought it was harder to play a defense based on man coverage when the other team had a RB, a WR and a QB that was faster/quicker than anybody we had.

Duke football is a prime example that an assistant coach moving to a head coaching position takes 3-4 years before any progress is made. Now Duke has a chance to play in the ACC championship game. Coach Cutliffe, as you may know also coache d several great quarterbacks, one namely Payton Manning. I say let coach Chow implement his game plan for the future, as painful as it may seem.

By the way, I’m not a Duke fan.

Too much 3-man front & man coverage has been a killer for the D. No pressure & receivers/rbs running free as the wind have been the result. I couldn’t believe that we played w/ a 3 man front against SDS in the OT period. TD in 3 plays & the ball game was the result.

The D game planning this week gotta change or we in for another shootout . . .

Isn’t it interesting that Chow didn’t want a dual threat QB at UH, but yet he talked about how well we got torched by Brett Smith from Wyoming who can run and throw equally well.
Seems like Alzheimer has set in early. This is not the BYU offense of old. This is not Lavell Edwards. We don’t have All Pro types QB like McMahon, Marc Wilson, Steve Young, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, or Philip Rivers. If we had Brett Smith on our team, I’d bet that chances are that our record could be close to being bowl eligible. Chow is way behind the times. He’s set in his ways. The younger coaches are running circles around him and his coaches. Chow also is slow to make changes and over nearly 2 years they have been out coached to make 2nd half adjustments. Winning is a mind set, and winners make key plays at critical times. We tend to wait for something bad to happen or we can’t get over the hump. When we need to drive the ball, we go 3 and out. It has happened so often, we fans know what’s going to happen next. A sack, a fumble, an interception, a penalty, something bad. That’s what winless teams do, and we are one of 4 in the country right now and can boast about. This week, who knows. Army can run the ball and can score.
