PonoJr wins six tickets

PonoJr wins six tickets to Saturday’s baseball game. Avis made the pick tonight.

Please text me at 256-0223, and I can leave the tickets at Will Call.

It was a must-win basketball game for the Rainbows tonight in Boise. They lost, and it’s open season on speculation.

Colt Brennan confirms that he arrives in town tomorrow, will participate in Saturday’s Field of Legends football youth football clinic at Aloha Stadium (call the Barefoot League at 734-0200 for details), then depart Sunday.

Brennan said he is in great shape, and fully healthy for the first time since the start of his senior year at UH. He has been training in Arizona.

Yesterday was the application deadline for the two vacated football positions β€” personnel director and assistant coach. Head coach Greg McMackin is in Japan for a series of football clinics. He won’t go through the applications until after he returns.

Happy birthday to former Rough Rider classmate Susan (Sato) Tamura.

Re-What I would do if I were Mayor in honoring Mosi Tatupu

Plant a tree. Where? Stadium Park, where the old stadium used to sit. And where Mosi played his high school games.

I think by commemorating Mosi life with some remembrance needs to be done , especially of how Mosi brought so much recognition and good will towards Hawaii.

Planting a tree (a big one like a banyan that will be around for 100 years or so) symbolizes a lot of things, especially life and growth. Plus with an accompanying plaque it serves as memorial plus perpetuates the memory of Mosi. Of all the people I’ve seen or heard about in lifetime that grew up in Hawaii none is more deserving of some recognition than Mosi. I feel it would be a shame if nothing is done.

  45. Kazz March 4, 2010 11:37 am

The Citadel should be tougher competition than Oregon. Heard on the radio Oregon was only ranked (25th) in one of the five NCAA baseball polls and those pesky “southern” teams play some good ball.

Speaking of… Hope those going to the Saturday noon game will stop by the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium!!!

BIG competition at 4pm against one of those “pesky southern teams” in East Carolina and while they don’t seem to be much of a threat as Udub, they are still a threat and then the BEST of the BEST showcase their power against the Wahine as #1 and 2009 NCAA Softball National Champions Washington plays UH at 6pm.

But getting back to East Carolina, they remind me of Oklahoma State in terms of their record and the competition they’ve won and lost to. Like OSU they’ve only lost to highly ranked teams and ECU features some local talent coming home to play… the Wahine MUST PROTECT DIS HOUSE!!! With #1 Washington looming later that day, they cannot keep their eyes off ECU for a moment. Keep the errors non-existent and if they are confident in their abilities, yet humble, ECU should be no problem. I was worried that while Oklahoma State didn’t have the numbers to really overwhelm us, I had a feeling our errors would cost us that game moreso than others and it seemed like it did. The Louisville Slugger and Cathedral City tournaments should have served as a major learning tool. I hope the Wahine have returned home a bit wiser.

    Washington…

“To be the man, you gotta beat the MAN!!! WOOOOOOOO!!!”

On paper, there should be no other team, out of the WAC or in the WAC, that is going to challenge the Wahine as hard as U-DUUUUUUUHHHHBBBBB. It will be a treat and a “chore” (in a way) to see how the Wahine batters maintain their poise against Udub’s pitching and if Stephanie Ricketts will be called upon and if she can find her “groove” on the mound against the BEST of the BEST.

The game against Seattle tomorrow night may be hard to watch if you are a Seattle fan. Game is at 6 and I leave the office around 6:20 or 6:30 at the latest and it takes me about 15-20 minutes to get to UH, find parking, and then park my okole in my seat at the stadium… I hope the Wahine don’t mercy rule Seattle before I even get a chance to get change from the parking attendant!!!

“I want to root-root-root for the home team.”

Wonder what it was I did in a previous life to poose off the assorted gods! Last night while I was shopping at Foodland in Kailua someone stole my wallet and cleared out my two debit card accounts – and then some – in less than 30 minutes. Also taken was a bus pass I’d just purchased for $50 Sunday evening, a book of checks, assorted pieces of ID, and my Sears card. Fortunately, I’d left this weekend’s baseball tickets on my desk.

At 7:40 pm, I’d gone into the store with my car keys, the wallet and a cloth shopping bag to buy some dessert to go with the Quizno’s sub DrDoc was buying next door. DD gave me $5 and saw me put the money in the wallet.

I picked up a store shopping basket before I headed into the bakery area. I discovered the wallet was gone when I went to the checkout stand around7:50 pm.

What was really bizarre is that there were very few customers in the store at the time plus I don’t even recall seeing anyone near me at the time. I certainly did not leave the basket unattended to go to another part of the store.

After DD purchased a replacement bus pass for another $50 – I cannot drive anymore until my Bad Eye!!! goes away – we headed over to Long’s to buy a replacement wallet. We ran into Stephen coming out of the door

As soon as we got home around 8:30 pm, we notifed the two banks and Sears. Both bank cards were closed immediately but not before a whole bunch of purchases had been run up in stores which do not require passcodes. I’d memorized them a long time ago so there was nothing in the wallet to give that information away.

We headed back to the Kailua police station, got the complaint forms, and then started visiting the various retail establishments that had processed the card. At the last one, the checkout clerk actually knew the guy who’d used the card and asked him whose card it was – the little snit said that it was his mom’s.

What a major hassle!! But the whole thing is really scary. Was this a “crime of opportunity” or is there a gang lurking around retail stores targeting solo women shoppers?

Back to sports: Still waiting for a return phone call concerning the Budweiser Tent. The individual in charge of the promotion is still off-island.

Give a shout-out to the men’s basketball team as well as the Bowsball team today.

Great idea by anonymous and DPK. I’d chip in for a statue of Mosi at the stadium. Just IMHO, he was the best high school football player that ever came out of Hawaii. Add his character, and he is very deserving.

  75. Slugger March 4, 2010 4:23 pm

    W-Doc,

Sorry to hear about the theft. The stores where your card was used might have surveillance tape that can be reviewed by police. Trick is to get the video tape before it’s recorded over. Bad karma to the perp.

    anonymous & DPK,

I walked through the Old Stadium Park today and there is room for another tree. A bust might not work in that park in terms of overall design, but a tree with a plaque would be nice. I don’t think that the City has kala to buy a tree, but if you raised the funds & gathered a group to plant it, they might go for it. Getting the tree enough water is another concern, since it’ll be a young sapling unlike the older established trees that can live on less water.

    WassupDoc,

I’m sorry to hear about your loss. Hopefully the inconvenience of getting new cards and a wallet is not too bad for you.

  78. Garret March 4, 2010 4:39 pm

Article about the 5 best players not at the combine mentioned John Estes:

John Estes, C, Hawaii. He’s a shorter player (6-2) who has really good balance and really strong hands. He’s rarely off his feet and is a better pass protector than run blocker.

  79. Garret March 4, 2010 4:42 pm

I rarely agree with Jon Wilner, but I think he just wrote a reasonable and detailed article on Pac-10 expansion.

The Pac-10 currently generates about $100 million in annual revenue while the Big Ten and SEC are both over $200 million.

The number I keep hearing out of Pac-10 circles is $150-$175 million β€” the presidents want another $5 – $7.5 million per school. They understand that the conference might not equal the Big Ten, but they want a 50 percent increase β€” if not more.

So in regards to expansion, the central question becomes: Would adding two teams create so much more net revenue that the 1/12th splits are greater than the 1/10th splits?

One way to increase inventory, of course, is by adding schools. But which ones?

San Diego State, Fresno State, UNLV, Nevada and Boise State are not part of the equation, multiple sources told me. No way, no how. They don’t work academically and they don’t work in the TV homes/revenue equation.

Unless Missouri or Texas (presumably with Texas A&M) are available β€” and at this point there’s no substantive reason to believe they are β€” then only three options exist for the conference: Utah, BYU and Colorado.

And for all practical purposes, there are only two options: Colorado and BYU, or Colorado and Utah.

Utah and BYU together simply will not work.

  80. Stephen Tsai March 4, 2010 4:46 pm

    Re: Mosi.
    Good point.
    Great gesture.
And a tree would be environmentally appropriate.
Not sure why we always have to wait several years to do things. I don’t mind emotional decisions. Most of what I do is based on emotion. … And then I apologize.

Perhaps a bust would be appropriate at the current Aloha Stadium grounds.

I hope CRW was not stuck in the Metro shut down at the Pentagon!

  83. wafan March 4, 2010 5:07 pm

Why not a tree at the stadium park and a bust at Aloha Rusty Stadium?

If Aloha Stadium is going to be around for another projected 20 years it would be a good place to honor Mosi. And, a tree on the site of his games would be a good place for youngsters to play their games for years to come.

Fresno State lost its special teams coach to USC.

John Baxter, a member of the Fresno State coaching staff for the past 13 seasons, has been named associate head coach and special teams coordinator at USC, new Trojan head coach Lane Kiffin announced today (March 4).

In his 13 years (1997-2009) at Fresno State, he was the associate head coach and special teams coach in addition to handling either the tight ends (1997-2001, 2003, 2009) or wide receivers (2002, 2004-2008).

Baxter turned the Bulldogs’ special teams into one of the top units in the nation annually. During his time, Fresno State blocked 84 kicks and punts (including a national-best 49 from 2002 through 2009) and scored 39 special teams touchdowns (with 3 safeties). The Bulldogs topped the nation in fewest punt return yards allowed in 2004 and 2005. A.J. Jefferson led the nation in kickoff returns in 2007. Clifton Smith’s 189 punt return yards with 2 touchdowns against Weber State in 2005 were Fresno State game records, while his 5 career scoring punt returns also was a school mark. Six of Baxter’s Bulldog kickers and punters earned All-Western Athletic Conference first team honors.

    its inevitable now.
maybe a reassignment somewhere in the dept?
we could use someone to head the compliance office.

  102. Ralph March 4, 2010 9:03 pm

reassignment, patronage jobs, high threes, always a bad omen for the taxpayer who wants leadership, accountability, results and fairness in employment opportunities. How many of our legislators went on to higher paying state jobs at the UH, dept. of Health, etc. for high threes, while more qualified people without connections waited for the call that never came.

I was cheering, hoping, in fact praying for the UH men’s basketball team to pull out a win against Boise State tonight, however, well, we all know the end result.
Anyway, I believe, sadly, this is the end of the road for Bob Nash as head coach.
Like I have stated earlier, great man, good human being, great amount of dedication to the University, however, he just didn’t get it done. To keep him around would be foolish with just one year left on his contract, and almost impossible for him to recruit without an extension.

  126. Garret March 5, 2010 3:50 am

    Al,

SMU hasn’t offered any QBs yet. They are having a camp just for QBs (I think it is called the “Top Gun” camp) this year, just like last year. Last year there were a number of 3-star QBs who attended the camp that openly talked about how they were hoping that SMU would offer, and I never understood why SMU did not offer and let those QBs go to SEC, Pac-10, and Big 12 schools.

Instead of offering those highly-rated QBs, SMU offered a QB that had no rating on scout or rivals…mainly because he had sat on the bench for his first 3 years and had not been the starting QB yet in high school (except for 1 game that his team lost when the starter was injured). The QB accepted the offer immediately, of course.

I didn’t understand why JJ would sit back and ignore all the other QBs that were interested in their school. But the name of that unrated QB immediately gave him a commit last year? Kyle Padron…who was something like #3 in QB efficiency in all of D-IA as a true freshman.

Waiting to offer who JJ offers probably won’t work too well. Last year I think that SMU was the first to offer Scroggins…he ended up going to USC.

  127. Garret March 5, 2010 3:56 am

Here is an article that mentions SMU’s QB camp…and a QB going there says that he’s going to *Hawaii* if he does well at the SMU camp.

Great Bridge quarterback Brad Hudson is taking his passing skills around the country.

Hudson, 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, has been invited to attend the Top Gun Camp at Southern Methodist University. If he does well there, he’ll attend a camp in California. And if he does well there, wll he could be headed to Hawaii.

Hudson, who was second-team All-Tidewater last season, completed 127 of 246 passes for 2,206 yards and 23 touchdowns.

  128. Garret March 5, 2010 3:57 am

    Pisa update.

Linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa also became a free agent. The Bears are believed to want him back, and offered him a contract before the season ended. He’s open to returning but no deal is in place.

  129. Garret March 5, 2010 4:33 am

This article analyzes the Pac-10 expansion candidates–here is the part that mentions UH:

    9) Hawaii…Don’t completely discount this one. Hawaii brings a couple of things to the table, not the least of which is an exotic locale that conference coaches can use as a “sell” to recruits who could expect to make at least a couple (in football) or annual (basketball) trips to the islands. Football also gets that extra 13th game for playing games at Hawaii. The Stanfords and Cals of the Pac-10 would also probably not reject UH out of hand on academic grounds, and besides, the thought of Hawaii fits nicely with the progressive political agenda of some Pac-10 institutions, who might look favorably upon an affiliation with the Manoa campus and its unique Polynesian and Pacific Rim flavor. The economics of Hawaii’s membership could get a bit problematic for the non-revenue sports, although football would be an easier sell, especially with the bowl game at Aloha Stadium that would likely come along with the Warriors. We also know for a fact that Hawaii has long dreamed of an affiliation with the Pac-10, and though it’s still a longshot, we don’t think it’s the most remote suggestion in our list.

Out of character appearances by the BaseBows’ Back-up Pitchers last night….or was the difference that the The Citadel batters were swingin’ away at anything around the plate? Tempting DH today to see their two aces on the mound.

Soggy bottom baseball last nite. Both teams pitchers were having control problems because of it. The Citadel group play a scrappy game, should be a challenging series.
