  7. LizKauai -iPad August 3, 2011 6:33 am

    Go Warriors!

    Congrats, Winnahs!

  8. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 6:36 am

    From Miano:

“Mouton tore achilles out for year.”

But now you got me thinking. I’ll double check.

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/789661-college-football-predictions-2011-oregon-hawaii-and-the-5-best-offenses

Oregon and Hawaii were dominating on the offensive side in their own respective way in 2010. Both have players who return in 2011 in hopes of having the same type of success.

College football has a majority of high-octane offenses like Oregon and Hawaii, but some produce at a much higher rate than others.

Discount tickets (50 yd line) for San Jose St. road game.

I have 50 yard line seats in Section 130; about 20 rows up, behind our Warriors bench, at $25 each; group rate–and I have 16 tickets left. All together we will have 200+ Warrior fans sitting in these 10 rows, from row 12 to 21. You can’t get these kine seats at any other stadium. Watch them perform the haka right in front of us–a definite chicken skin moment! This will be the last game at San Jose on Oct. 14, 6pm–a friday nite game!

    GO WARRIORS!

ps: The UH sections will be in the corner end zone (section 134 and 135) and those were $45.

  11. NYUH August 3, 2011 6:39 am

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Mouton. (I heard it was a torn ACL?)

  12. d1shima August 3, 2011 6:40 am

    R Smoke:

    August 2nd, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Looks like Ryan Mouton might be done for the year with an ACL tear. Sounds like he was on the verge of breaking out too. Bummaz!

    http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/playerbreakingnews.asp?sport=NFL&id=5335&line=208394&spln=1

You are correct…Achilles. R Smoke may have gotten a little excited and mis-reported.

Huh? I thought it was over 5,000?

Moniz threw for 4,629 yards which was first in the nation, and he collected 36 touchdowns.

  14. d1shima August 3, 2011 6:41 am

    …really gotta go now

  15. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 6:43 am

Titans’ site has it as achilles:

The Tennessee Titans defense suffered a blow Tuesday when cornerback Ryan Mouton injured his Achilles’ tendon during practice.

Mouton will have an MRI on Wednesday, but The Tennessean reported it’s likely he is out for the season. He had to be helped off the field by trainers and was later seen in the locker room wearing a walking boot and on crutches.

Mouton, a third-round pick out of Hawaii in 2009, appeared in 14 games for the Titans last season.

But then the fans got a little vicious and want him cut already. Yeah, sure, that’s the reason the Titans were lousy.

  16. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 6:44 am

    NYUH:

What’s the deal on the Nassau Coliseum situation? I think the Islanders’ owner has ties to Hawaii.

  17. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 6:45 am

    Tom:

Have you been in contact with the Masch family?

  18. koakane August 3, 2011 6:50 am

    morning to warrior nation

getting closer to the opening day yep the excitements builds

bummers on rmouton’s injury, prayer on his quick recovery

congrats to those winners especially pwn brother monarch dj winna winna

  19. koakane August 3, 2011 6:53 am

st the practice planned for the aloha stadium is there a possibility it may open up to fans?

  20. Wes'side Warrior August 3, 2011 6:53 am

    Keep working, Hunter!

    Gratz to da winnahs!

  21. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 6:57 am

    Koakane:

No, the Aloha Stadium practice will be closed to the public.

They’re going to be testing out the new turf, doing the walk-through of game-day procedures, etc.

  22. NYUH August 3, 2011 6:58 am

ST: I’m probably more informed on Aloha Stadium but it appears voters turned down a $400 million bond issue and Charles Wang will move the Islanders elsewhere in 2015.

  23. gigi-hawaii August 3, 2011 6:58 am

Too bad for Mouton. Speedy recovery!

  24. gigi-hawaii August 3, 2011 7:01 am

ST, interesting article about using the latest technology for the athletes. Makes sense.

I think it’s more difficult for older folks to catch on, so I give the older coaches credit for being able to fathom the intricacies of the iPhone.

As for me, I still don’t know how to time record shows on TV.

  25. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 7:02 am

    NYUH

Thanks. Probably not the right economic time for a billionaire to ask for $400 million in public funding.

  26. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 7:04 am

    Gigi:

If you order pay-per-view, you must have a digital system. Click on the “guide” button, scroll to the time period you wish, hit record, then set the ending for about 5 minutes extra (in case a show runs over), and then, 3 days later, scold Hubby for erasing your show.

  27. gigi-hawaii August 3, 2011 7:09 am

    ST, huh?

  28. gigi-hawaii August 3, 2011 7:13 am

I am so glad I have friends who are even more technologically challenged than I am.

It makes me so happy when they tell me they don’t know how to post photos on a blog and want my help.

lol. It’s nice to feel smart.

  29. NYUH August 3, 2011 7:19 am

RE: Will Gregory. A speedy “little” back is always a nice change of pace in this offense.

  30. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 7:26 am

He’s actually a speedy big back.

  31. letsgowarriors August 3, 2011 7:55 am

  39. K. Mark Takai August 3, 2011 8:20 am

Good morning Tsai-kos! I just activated my SA online account since I already buy the hard copy edition. It’s totally cumbersome since you need to enter your email address and password every time you log in. I was also wondering whether access to blogs such as the Warrior Beat will be restricted to only online account holders. I hope not. Does anyone know about this?

  40. Pomai August 3, 2011 8:28 am

Mark the blog will remain free, and I agree having to log in every time is a pain.

  41. Couch potato August 3, 2011 8:38 am

cumbersome and painful is when the person in front of you in the check-out register pays with a paper check.

The Denver Post column with new HC Embree and his Buffaloes, along with the tough season ahead. Not one mention of the Hawaii opener.

    UH vs UNLV Tickets

I finally went through the tickets and we are somewhat scattered throughout Section 115. A couple of tickets in one row, a few in another, skip a row, and then the balance of the Tsaikos. I’ll be putting the seating chart together in the next few days and will keep people together as requested in 2009. You may email me to verify the request, but I’ll be emailing you later this week or early next week.

Now, for the business end of this email:

Checks payable to: (Or cashier’s check)

    Rich Darvey

    Mail to:

Tickets are $31 each. Contributions for my travel to Vegas are greatlly appreciated.

For those of you who I’ve never received a check from, I won’t mail the tickets until your check clears. To the rest of you, a MAJOR MAHALO for none of the rubber kine checks!!

Any questions, email me at rich2176 over at yahoo.

  46. Bowwar August 3, 2011 9:00 am

It will be interesting to see whether Graves will emerge this year as a “solid” 3rd string or possibly 2nd usurping Shane Austin. Who knows, maybe Shutter will make a bold move for consideration. As its been said, you’re only “one snap away” from getting into the game.

  47. wafan August 3, 2011 9:14 am

  51. SteveM August 3, 2011 9:35 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Best wishes for Ryan Mouton!

  52. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 9:35 am

    Re: Friel

He’ll report the first day of school.

  53. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 9:37 am

There are about 16 that have been invited for the first day of school.

But the list keeps changing. The roster I received, the names of the first-day players are redacted.

  54. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 9:38 am

ScottM said there is a loophole to get around the pay wall, but that’s only open today. It was kept that way in case there were problems with the pay wall. It closes tomorrow.

  55. cheepono August 3, 2011 9:40 am

so the 16 or so guys that report the 1st day of school can’t practice with the team until then?

  56. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 9:41 am

    Wafan:

Until you posted the “hump day” comment, I didn’t realize this was Wednesday. Time is going by very fast.

  57. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 9:43 am

    Cheepono:

No. They can watch practice, if they wish, but not participate in any drills.

If you’re not one of the first-day guys, then you have to wait until January to rejoin the team.

  58. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 9:43 am

Samson Anguay is not part of the 16 because he recently underwent season-ending ACL surgery.

  59. letsgobows August 3, 2011 9:46 am

i understand anguay not being on the roster, since he’ll probably redshirt after his injury. friel can redshirt too, plus we have a lot of DTs right now.

i also noticed elisara is not on the roster

  60. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 9:47 am

    Letsgo:

Elisara is a first-day guy, too.

  61. madeinhawaii August 3, 2011 9:48 am

    Hmm… when I google for

“UH coaches have upgraded their teaching methods”

I see links to the Star-Advertiser…but when I click on those links it tells me that the page does not exist.

  62. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 9:49 am

Higgins is an interesting camp guy because he has to redshirt this year. But they’re going to need a lot of arms this camp. That’s where they’ll miss Nielsen. He did a lot of the scout work.

  63. letsgobows August 3, 2011 9:49 am

yeah but i figured hed at least be able to contribute on special teams. imo, its kind of a dissappointment that hes not on the camp roster being a 2nd year scholarship guy that plays DE/LB. should be at least on special teams.

  64. LizKauai (kauaikulolo) August 3, 2011 9:49 am

Mahalo, Rich2176. Will get the check into the mail tomorrow.

  65. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 9:49 am

    MIH:

I guess they closed the loop hole. Scott thought it would be open all day.

  66. cheepono August 3, 2011 9:51 am

thanks for clearing that up ST.

  67. wafan August 3, 2011 9:51 am

    Closed the loop hole?

    Oops.

Now everyone will have to pay up!

  68. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 9:51 am

    Letsgo:

I imagine there were a lot of tough decisions. I think Drew Uperesa falls into that category, too.

  69. wafan August 3, 2011 9:56 am

Tough decisions for the coaches to make — whom to invite and not.

I feel sorry for the guys who really want to be Warriors but are not invited. But, this is what we all wanted . . . team full of talented players. Sadly, some just will not make it.

Good luck to every one of the Warriors-at-Heart!

  70. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 9:56 am

    Wafan:

It probably would have stayed open a lot longer if a reader didn’t mention it in the previous post for all of the techs to see.

If there’s a misprint of a price, a company usually honors a certain amount of the mistaken price. It’s usually better not to spread the word to too many people or else nobody gets the deal.

    Ralphie Report

    http://www.ralphiereport.com/2011/8/3/2299784/previewing-2011-opponents-hawaii-week-1

    “Recap

Last year we had both Rodney Stewart and Brian Lockridge go for 100 yards on the ground, we had a great half of Offensive Football (the 2nd half) and our Defense held them to the second fewest points they scored all year. We brought solid pressure all game long, and they are starting over on their Offensive Line, and we prevented a good number of scoring plays even though that was smack dab in the middle of our rash of DB injuries (That was the game that Vigo went down). Hansen was still the starter for this game, so he has faced these guys before, and he played fairly well. We still have a number of players for whom this will be a homecoming. This will be a fun game, and while it won’t be easy, I do see this as a CU victory. Instead of tiptoeing around the issue like Hawk, Coach Embree has made overcoming our road losing streak a priority. As scary as it sounds, this 10-win team from a year ago is one of the weakest we play all year. I’m not sure we hold them to less than 300 yards passing, but I do think we’ll be able to limit the number of points they score again. And they didn’t see much of Paul Richardson last season.

I won’t be guessing the score in these previews, leaving that for our week-of posts, but I do think we’re going to win this one by at least a couple of touchdowns.”

  72. madeinhawaii August 3, 2011 10:01 am

That was the loop hole? heh… not good that they use the “We’re sorry! Page Not Found.” page instead of a “You must be a subscriber to access this content.”

  73. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 10:04 am

Not sure if some of you went through Panda for road trips, but Lori, who handled football trips, has left the company and now works on Upper Campus.

  74. madeinhawaii August 3, 2011 10:07 am

    LizK,

Somebody should print out that column and pin it somewhere in the dance studios and weight rooms.. Give the boys a little extra motivation.

  75. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 10:08 am

Since I have not received my activation code yet, how does it work? Is it like signing on for the period I’m reading? Or do I have to sign on for every story? And does the system time out?

  76. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 10:09 am

    MIH:

They’ve got all of the Colorado articles posted. During workouts, Heffernan sometimes would run a video loop of Colorado’s highlights.

  77. Gmahoney via Ipad August 3, 2011 10:10 am

ST-I notice the blog now refreshes every time I come back to it, not having closed the browser window. Like it!

  78. Stephen Tsai August 3, 2011 10:12 am

    Gmahoney:

It does? Yikes! It’s like the computer is watching.

  79. madeinhawaii August 3, 2011 10:13 am

The Colorado game should be a really pumped up nail biter… edge of seat type game … at least until one side breaks it wide open. Counting on that one side to be our Warriors!

  80. Gmahoney via Ipad August 3, 2011 10:14 am

CNN does it. Thank the techies!

  81. bb August 3, 2011 10:17 am

One thing I noticed from the pay site are most of the ignorant comments that are posted in articles are no longer there. Take for example the article on the school employee and sexting. There are only a handful of comments and some of them are because the user pressed send one too many times. If it was still free by this time the comment counts would be in the 30’s-50’s.

I guess most of the “internet tough guys” are not willing to fork up the money. There are still some but way way less than before.

I saw a photo of the turf. –but it came from a helicopter flying overhead, and the picture was of Pearl Harbor not really of the stadium.

  82. Derek August 3, 2011 10:18 am

#72. This should be bulletin board material for the Warriors already. Post it up. Mack should also read it at a team meeting for full effect. One of the things I don’t like is when a team disrespect an opponent. A lot of times, it just bites them in the okole…big time. Now I am more convinced that we will win this game on Sept. 3. That all we need right now, some self-confidence, and mosey on down to mamby pamby lane and eat some “Buffalo” Wild Wings!!!!!!

Noticed Steve Christian is not on the roster too. I guess he’s buried further down on the depth chart. He’ll be back when school starts and the team expands the roster. The great thing is that there are a lot of bodies who want to contribute to this team and I do believe that the talent level is much better and the recruiting is much better. There are a lot of players who can play and there is great competition. Like this new ugy, RB Josh Gonda. I never heard about this guy until this morning and I look at his highlight film. Hey, he looked very good in my opinion, but we will have to see if he can develop into a contributor. Looks like Jackson and Iosefa are north-south guys with good size and inside burst. Who’s the Mr. Outside, the guy who can made yardage on the perimeter?

  83. RedZone August 3, 2011 10:34 am

Earlier this morning I was able to read all of the articles I had visited on the SA website. Later on I guess the techies turned on the pay feature which required me to log in. After logging in I was able to visit other articles on SA. I have noticed that I could visit other sites and return to SA and I still would be logged in. There is also a log out button at the upper right corner of the page. So I surmise that as long I keep my browser window open I will continue to be logged in at the SA site. I tried closing the browser and found that after opening it again I had to log in again.

  84. GoodLookingPake August 3, 2011 10:34 am

Anyone know the numbers for the following players:

    Adebayo Tim

    Gonda Josh

    Harding Scott

    Higgins Jeremy

    McCagg Dylan

Thanks in advance for whoever kokua’s

  85. Couch potato August 3, 2011 10:34 am

Derek, it goes both ways. must be that the Buffs have also posted bb material hijacked from this blog or other Hawaii blogs regarding beating the carabao. i bet they even have a picture of the buffalo jerky pic that was posted here.

both sides have fuel for their fires. let’s see who burns the hottest the longest.

  86. Last Call August 3, 2011 10:36 am

The back door to the SA is still wide open ST and I doubt the they could do anything about it anyway.

  87. Kevin August 3, 2011 10:38 am

Some people within programs are very weary of “bulletin board material”. Some don’t put stock into it, some do and prefer not to have anything that could help “fuel” the opposition.

I did not need to log in again to the SA, so no need to keep it tabbed.

  91. d1shima August 3, 2011 11:03 am

cumbersome and painful is when the person in front of you in the check-out register pays with a paper check.

cumbersome-r and painful-est is when they stand there until the cashier gives them the total due and then they drag out their checkbook and start writing….What they thought the $0.33 in change in their pocket was going cover it?!?!

  100. Couch potato August 3, 2011 11:13 am

d1shima, DQ on Kaheka St. get plenty check writers. also get the ladies with the coin purse that absolutely must have the exact cents. painful to watch them dump the coins on the counter and wait for the cashier to count for them.

    i googled chrome, now what?

  101. madeinhawaii August 3, 2011 11:14 am

cumbersome and painful is when the person in front of you in the check-out register pays with a paper check.

cumbersome-r and painful-est is when they stand there until the cashier gives them the total due and then they drag out their checkbook and start writing….What they thought the $0.33 in change in their pocket was going cover it?!?!

How about when they don’t have enough in their debit card to cover the bill? Not just once.. but twice? I feel so bad for them… but it’s still an annoyance.

  102. d1shima August 3, 2011 11:15 am

    Islanders?

  116. LizKauai (kauaikulolo) August 3, 2011 11:31 am

ST- after getting cleared the first time, all I did was put my login and password in once, tell my computer to REMEMBER when it asked and I can see everything.

Now that the comments are run by a different engine, not Disqus, I had to re-log into that section.

The comment interface is a little odd right now as you cannot see your comment right away after submitting – which explains the multiple comments mentioned above.

  117. Kevin August 3, 2011 11:38 am

First of all, who’s the fool trying to order food for a whole soccer team via DRIVE THRU?????????????????????

    BAHBOOZE!!!!!!!

Have the decency to prepare and call the order in at least!

I’ve never worked for a fast food joint in my life, but I can at least have the common sense to know that 30 value meals won’t be ready in two minutes at a drive thru window.

Some people are just ignorantly rude.

  118. Kevin August 3, 2011 11:42 am

And another thing, who are all these people getting all fussy about fast food?????

You’re paying under $10.00 for your meal and the line is long, WTH do you think is going on? There’s a magic burger machine back there making burgers in 10 seconds? If you are impatient, that is the price you pay for being too lazy to cook yourself.

Again, I NEVER worked fast food or in the food industry in my life and all I have to say is DON’T MESS WITH PEOPLE THAT PREPARE YOUR FOOD!!!

  119. Jayson August 3, 2011 11:44 am

Imagine ordering food after the guy from Epic Meal Time.

  125. A-House August 3, 2011 12:18 pm

    ST #74:

It’s the tour guides that were/are sometimes lacking in basic “common sense” things that can make the trip a much more enjoyable one.

For instance, the 2008 Sugar Bowl, our 2 female guides refused to provide their cell phone #s with a comment that we can leave messages with the front desk and they will call back. There many complaints for room items – ie, lack of drapes for windows when constructions workers were outside your room; toilets over flowing, lack of furniture, ect. We saw them when we checked in at HNL airport, loading the buses before the game, and loading buses for our return flight. Otherwise, they were on vacation!

I shall stop before I get into trouble.

  126. LizKauai (kauaikulolo) August 3, 2011 12:37 pm

DPK- yes… rates are different. What did you pay? I think mainlanders pay only $10

  127. Rich2176 August 3, 2011 12:40 pm

A-House – Aren’t you always in trouble anyway?

Here’s a not worth complaining about it: I get the tix in Vegas and go eat with Rasu. He drops me off at the Paris Hotel. I go check in and say my only request is high floor with a view of Bellagio, so I can watch the fountains. The nice woman in registration says “here’s a nice room – 33rd floor.” I get to the elevators and it’s the top floor. I walk past all of these double door suites thinking I had been upgraded. Not so. I get to my room number and see it attaches to a double door suite next to my room. View was nice. Room was stuffy. Couldn’t get the a/c to work. Went down to play machines for a while. Still no a/c when I went back up. Didn’t have a/c all night. It was miserable. Bottom line – if I complained, there wasn’t anything they could have done for me since the room was already compted. I guess I got what I paid for…

  128. LizKauai (kauaikulolo) August 3, 2011 12:43 pm

Haha, Rich… you good local style guy… knows when not to grumble…

  129. Kaimuki Kid August 3, 2011 12:43 pm

Back a few years when Beanie Babies were all the rage, McD ran their teenie beanies offer with purchase. Someone in line in front of me ordered 150 Hambuger Happy Meals but only wanted the toys. The shift refused to give it to him without the Happy Meals! You know how long it took to get that order done. I think he tried top get the McD restaurant to donate the meals to IHS. What a mess and the long line of people that were there trying to get those beanies AUWE! We used to buy those Happy Meals and bring them home to share with the dog.He used to take the hamburger and bury it . He was tired of eating hamburgers from NcD too.

  130. LizKauai (kauaikulolo) August 3, 2011 12:45 pm

KK- I still have a bunch of those Teenie Beanies! We could only buy as many Happy Meals as we had kids standing in line with us…

  131. SteveM August 3, 2011 12:46 pm

    Re: #126

A-House — I have met some sub-par tour escorts before, but in fairness to the Panda gals, the things you describe should be handled by the hotel. But Panda should be informed of the problems and complaints in a given property they booked.

I would say their job is to make sure the buses arrive, remind you to get to the buses, verify that you are on the bus, and ensure you have your luggage and get on the plane. They would host any party the travel agency might provide.

  132. Couch potato August 3, 2011 12:58 pm

anyone wanna buy 150 beanie babies? sorry for making you wait Kaimuki Kid. 😆

#37 You’re right; ignorance is bliss. I was wondering why I was full of bliss.

  134. Rich2176 August 3, 2011 1:05 pm

Liz – life’s too short to grumble sometimes. I told the woman at the check-out desk to make a note for maintenance to check it out so the next guest wouldn’t be in the 33rd floor sauna. She scolded me for not complaining sooner. Oh well…

  135. Couch potato August 3, 2011 1:05 pm

Curt, women fall for blissful men. you da man!

  136. Curt August 3, 2011 1:06 pm

I believe achilles injuries are pretty bad stuff. I would think it takes awhile to heal.

    Couch potato

#136 Ah ha. Now, I know why she married me. The fact that she can’t see, hear, or smell also probably helped my case.

  138. Couch potato August 3, 2011 1:12 pm

especially if a person named Paris shoots you with an arrow in your achilles.

  139. Couch potato August 3, 2011 1:13 pm

    you married Helen Keller?

  140. Curt August 3, 2011 1:15 pm

I wonder how Kevin Spain is doing? It’s easy to re-injure the shoulder. I’ve had a shoulder injury for just about a year now. When I think it’s healed, I re-injure it again. So, I’m curious if Spain is completely over the injury. ST, can you ask him about it?

  141. Curt August 3, 2011 1:17 pm

    Couch potato

    U found out my secret.

  142. Kevin August 3, 2011 1:19 pm

    Not fun at all.

    SORRY A.D.A. only having fun.

  144. Curt August 3, 2011 1:22 pm

    Kevin

    Playing Marco Polo?

  145. Couch potato August 3, 2011 1:24 pm

Curt, you never played marco polo in a pool? oh that’s right, you married Helen Keller. forget it.

  146. Kevin August 3, 2011 1:26 pm

That’s that thing where one person closes their eyes and calls out “Marco” and the other person they are trying to find yells “Polo” in response after hearing “Marco” called out.

  147. Kevin August 3, 2011 1:27 pm

I’d put a clip of that from “Family Guy” on here, but that might offend some people.

    Salas is getting good notice!

“Bradford also likes what he’s seen of rookie wide receivers Austin Pettis and Greg Salas.

“I think they have done a great job so far,” Bradford said. “They’ve been asked to do a lot with some of our wide receivers being down right now. They’ve been thrown in with the ones quite a bit. They’ve played confident when they’ve been in there. Obviously they have made some mistakes but at this point we’ve all made mistakes. I really like that when they do get in the huddle with the ones, they come in with a look that they know what they’re dong. They play very confident and they play very fast. They’re not hesitant like a lot of rookies are. So, I think if they continue to progress they’re going to be big parts of this offense this year.”

Added Spagnuolo, “They as much as any of the vets, have picked up the system pretty well. They don’t look like normal rookies to me. By that I mean, normally they’d be tired, they’d be making a lot of mental mistakes. I don’t really see that. I mean, they are making mistakes here and there but, and the other thing I like, today I watched both of them catch punts and they both look like short-handed punt returners. Now sometimes you just need somebody to go out there and make sure they catch the football. So I feel pretty comfortable.”

  150. mctruck August 3, 2011 1:36 pm

    Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

And in the backfield, running backs Grant, James Starks and Alex Green will all demand touches. Meanwhile, across the league, foolish spending was the norm during July’s hell week. Starving for an ounce of the Packers’ dynamic on offense, several teams …

  167. LizKauai (kauaikulolo) August 3, 2011 3:08 pm

Reardon’s article on Rolo had some good “teaching moments”-

the guy who plays for his teammates does the big things and the little things that add up to winning … 365 days a year, and especially on those Saturday nights in the fall.

Rolovich wants his players to learn this, but without losing nine games in a season. The new starters saw plenty of examples of guys giving it up for each other last year, in practice and in games. To casual fans, Alex Green, Kealoha Pilares and Greg Salas were special because of the touchdowns they scored. To Rolovich and the Warriors, they were special because of the touchdowns they helped their teammates score.

“(This year’s starters) were in the room, very close to it,” Rolovich said. “They soaked up a lot, it was valuable for them to see that. Greg and Kealoha took it up a notch every snap in practice, every snap in film.”

Same with Green, who transformed himself into an all-purpose back by prioritizing blocking — the only way a running back can play at UH. You can’t get touches from the bench.

“Now everyone sees hard-work equal-sign draft-pick,” Rolovich said.

  168. bb August 3, 2011 3:14 pm

    They better play. lol.

The tickets weren’t cheap but how often does someone from Hawaii end up in Wisconsin and during the same weekend as Salas vs Green. I am going up for a wedding and there would be no excuse NOT to try and go.

A-House — yup, we’ve heard the promises before. Hope you informed your agent on you return. Actually, I carry their phone number. 🙂

The best tour escorts I ever had were Paul and Didi Ah Yo, rest their souls. I was impressed how Paul could resolve everyone’s problems instantly all along the line. Of course, it was only later that I learned Paul was the President.

BTW, last year’s Army game and NE/Canada cruise out of New York was escorted by the President of that tour agency. That one had a lot of tough/close cut logistics. I smiled when I saw that. Wanted to go.

  184. TYaiea August 3, 2011 6:27 pm

couch spud, reading the article think by “short handed punt returner” he’s referring to a player that is sure handed and catches the punt period. Don’t have to be an excellent returned, just able to catch the punt all the time. Greg S. was doing this in the latter part of the season, fair catch all the punts. JMHO..

I’m glad that the Warrior Beat will still be free.

Looking forward to the fall season of UH sports!! Should be a good one.

And before I forget (and since I’ve been traveling for the past two months) congrats to Jim Donovan and UH Athletics for getting the annual budget in the black. During such a difficult fiscal time, it’s good to know we have people like Jim who despite the challenges, can turn it around (like making lemonade from lemons, I guess).

  221. Lopaka43 August 3, 2011 9:43 pm

    Ralph and Kevin

Spare us the cheap shots about the rail system steel on steel and rust

Vancouver BC, like Honolulu, is on the ocean, and their SkyTrain system is steel on steel, runs beautifully, covers most of its costs from the fare box, and is much quieter than Honolulu buses and trucks. They have a regular maintenance program to grind the wheels to specs so that the trains are super quiet.

There really isn’t any alternative now for people on the West Side who have to go to Honolulu to work. An elevated train that doesn’t get caught in the traffic is something they have been due for years.

  225. Slugger August 3, 2011 10:28 pm

#224 ~ Hi, Lopaka43! I agree. I commuted on BART from OAK to SF for 3 years and it was great. Didn’t have to get in that traffic and it took less time & aggravation than driving & having to find parking. The towns down the Peninsula that didn’t want to be taxed to bring BART down, i.e., Santa Clara & San Jose, are now wanting BART extended. It’s costing them beaucoup bucks more to do it today than 25 years ago.

Once rail is extended to the airport, it’ll really make tourii and locals happy.

  226. Slugger August 3, 2011 10:29 pm

Mahalo Rasu Begasu & rich2176 for taking care of the Tsaikos!

  228. Ralph August 3, 2011 10:41 pm

Lopaka grind the wheels to specs as a maintenance program to keep the rail quiet, you kidding me. That is labor intensive and costly. Otherwise Chicago would have done it long ago where its elevated rail system is steel on steel and very noisy.

There are other wheel alternatives and systems to move the cabs. What does the bullet train use as a system- electromagnetic?

Steel will rusts and our state has already shown it can not keep up with the maintenance of a rusting hulk- Aloha Stadium.

Back to sports, or food, fun, family, fishing, etc.

  231. Ralph August 3, 2011 10:46 pm

Slugger and LizK, good points, but we were commenting on steel on steel and a potential rust problem, and not whether rail is needed or not.

  232. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 3, 2011 10:46 pm

    Ralph,

Actually the grinding of the track/wheels (truck) is done automatically. No labor as in someone actually going at it with a grinder.

  233. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 3, 2011 10:48 pm

everything from the greasing and grinding of track and truck irregularities are done by sending a specialized “car” down the line. it doesn’t require some guy walking down the rail line with a bucket of grease etc.

  234. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 3, 2011 10:54 pm

just a few places with similar “salt water climates” with steel on steel technology.

miami, bangkok, manila, hong kong, san juan, shenzhen, rio de janero, lima, valencia.

  235. sean (HKwarrior) August 3, 2011 10:59 pm

    c_c

Thanks for the schedules, they look great!!

  236. Ralph August 3, 2011 11:02 pm

235,236 & 237 so you’re saying rust is not a problem with proper maintenance and with new steel technology the steel rail is quiet.

My issue here is rust maintenance and noise, and I’m not interested in a dialogue whether rail is good or not.

  237. madeinhawaii August 3, 2011 11:03 pm

Could do what they do in China these days. Build the physical structure for the train system without the actual rails. Use buses on those dedicated tracks until the passenger load justifies trains. Cheaper.. faster to build… more efficient when ridership is low. Course we might lose the $55 million Federal funding until tracks are laid.. but we’d get to a practical working system sooner and can use much of what we already have (buses).

  240. jojo ® August 3, 2011 11:11 pm

    Eh water will win

  241. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 3, 2011 11:16 pm

    #239,

I never mentioned that rail is good or bad for us. I pointed out that preventing “trucking” and greasing rail lines etc is not the same as it was in the 1930’s. Its automated in a sense.

I could go on and on about rail noise. Where would you like me start? The problem here is that people think we are bringing in a steel/steel system that mirrors New York City. NYC rail lines date back as far as the late 1800’s. The technology has changed. Just as a car is still a car but the cars we drive today are not the same as the Model T.

There are several noise mitigating measures that include preventing trucking, greasing rail lines, shock pads, sound barrier “walls” etc.

  242. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 3, 2011 11:18 pm

    #240,

    That is basically HOT lanes.

  243. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 3, 2011 11:22 pm

    #240,

Problem with HOT lanes is that you need to build on/off ramps that go onto maxed out surface streets.

Exaggerated example but if we turned H1 into 100 lanes and added 100 on/off ramps, we still have a problem with surface street capacity. You need to be able to add capacity to surface streets in order to accommodate additional lanes of freeway or else you essentially get a bottleneck.

  244. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 3, 2011 11:26 pm

Its not that I don’t believe HOT lanes or expressways won’t work per se. Its just that we would need to invest in the surface streets and additional infrastructure to handle influx of cars. How do we expand surface streets in town or w/in urban core etc? Go underneath? There was a proposal to do a tunnel from downtown honolulu to waikiki but money went dry for that and I think it was going to be done with private money.

  245. jojo ® August 3, 2011 11:30 pm

Should be like European cities that charge to drive in the city centers. Can make $ that way

  246. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 3, 2011 11:34 pm

    #248,

When Djou was in the City Council he proposed looking into that. Basically congestion relief tolls that have been utilized in London.

Hanneman at the time promised to veto the measure.

    MANOAMAKEOVERREMINDER!!

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai’i Athletics Department welcomes the general public to participate in the 4th Annual Manoa Makeover cleanup of the Makai Campus Athletics Complex and surrounding facilities, Saturday, August 6.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the event should contact our athletic facilities office at 956-7350 to sign up. Deadline to signup is August 4 at Noon. The cleanup, which includes pressure washing, general cleaning, and landscaping, runs from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Registration is 7:30 a.m. at the Lecture Hall, Rm. 241.

Volunteers will be served lunch at noon.

The Manoa Makeover initiative encourages and facilitates volunteer projects aimed at beautifying the historic UH Manoa campus.

What: Cleanup of UH-Manoa Athletics Complex and surrounding facilities

    When: Saturday, August 6, 2011

    Time: 7:30 (Registration); 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Where: UH-Manoa Makai Campus (Athletics Facilities)

    Contact: 956-7350

Duties: Pressure washing, General cleaning, Landscaping

DrDoc will be there working for both of us as I’ll be working on a public housing rehab project in Wahiawa and prepping lunch for about 65 volunteers.

Still haven’t gotten answers to the following questions:

How late will the Practice T-Gate last on Saturday?

Why NFL team should we be root, root, rooting for?

Wassup wit’ Colt and what will he do if not playing football?

This is not the blog to discuss mass transit – but sometime before the end of this decade most of the folks who are not heading to a T-Gate will be riding the train out to Aloha Stadium. We’ll probably park in downtown Honolulu and catch the train since we still have to drive from Kailua to the leeward side of the island.

BTW – who’s doing the recycling this season? Last year, you folks drank $200 on behalf of Koa Anuenue. Not bad at all.

Happy 221st Birthday to the U.S. Coast Guard!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Coast_Guard

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven U.S. uniformed services. It operates under the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime, and can be transferred to the Department of the Navy by the President at any time, or by Congress during time of war.

Founded by Alexander Hamilton as the Revenue Cutter Service on 4 August 1790, it lays claim to being the United States’ oldest continuous seagoing service. As of August 2009, the Coast Guard had approximately 42,000 men a women on active duty, 7,500 reservists, 30,000 auxiliarists, and 7,700 full-time civilian employees…

    why drive, work from home.

to really alleviate traffic, rail needs to go to at least Manoa.

people drive, why? cause they no like ride next to strangers and get personal business to do when work pau like pick up kids, go to second job, extracurricular activities or just holoholo.

just tell the feds to make a road from Ewa through land near westlock to Pearl Harbor so all the fed workers who live on the wesside can go to the Hickam/Pearl Harbor area.

convert a majority of UH classes to online classes so the students no need commute as much

    fix potholes.

    HOWDY FOLKS!

RAIL: The builder and operator apparently have financial problems which our City folks don’t seem to mind.

I believe that the 2nd stage was to build the rail from Ala Moana to Manoa and beyond.

When Tom Gill ran for Governor back in the early-mid 60’s, he was advocating a rail system – except it was from Hawaii-Kai/Aina Hina to town. The cost then was a relative pittance compared to the billions now.

And of course rail will become more expensive with overruns and could be a financial disaster if it becomes another H-3 which got delayed for what, 15 or more years with law suits, inflation etc.

The above is some general comments and not necessarily an endorsement of the rail system.

MADEINHAWAII #240 makes a lot of sense if we go forward.

And IDKWTHM has some great comments as well.

I agree with KEKOA – I won’t be around if and when it is built!

Dedicated train infrastructures without the actual rails are only for bus use – no cars nor vans. It’s operated like the would-be train system. The idea is to create a system that runs on time, gets you where you want to go in an acceptable time frame, is cost-effective for the consumer, secure and convenient. The amount of road structure would be essentially the same as if you were to build the actual rail.. but without the tracks. Riders pay for their tickets or passes at a gate, not when boarding. (The question would be, where to put the bikes. Maybe center exit – As passengers can enter/exit the bus from all access points.)

Essentially you would be looking at a bus-that-thinks-it’s-a-train system.
