Warriors add 3 walk-ons
From last week’s walk-on tryouts, the Warriors have extended spring-training invitations to:
> Kayson Smith Bejgrowicz: He was named the state’s 2015 Gatorade athlete of the year in track and field after winning the high jump (6-6) and triple jump (46-1.5) and placing second in the long jump (22-5.75) in the state meet. The 2015 Kamehameha graduate is 6-3, 195 pounds and expected to compete at wideout or DB. His father is Kawika Smith, a former track standout at Damien.
> Austin Ferreira: Ferreira, a 2014 King Kekaulike High graduate, is 6-0 and 190 pounds. He is expected to compete at wideout or cornerback.
> Makai Manuwai: Yes, he is related to Vince Manuwai (they’re first cousins). Manuwai is a 2016 South Medford (Ore.) High graduate, where he had a cumulative 4.0 GPA. He is 6-1 and 255 pounds. He will compete at tight end, H-back or defensive end.
Max Hendrie?
He underwent shoulder surgery during the season. He wasn’t wearing a sling when I saw him earlier this week. He should be good to go for the coming season.
Am I first? Whatever … great to have three additions to the team. Welcome!
Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
Guud to see the walk on program is alive and well. Welcome to the new Warriors! Train an study hard, make the team! IMUA!
Congratulations to the successful walk-ons.
Just curious. According to the news article, Ulu-Perry was ESPN no. 1 guard and Scout No. 1 center in 2015 (assuming nation-wide?). So was he a five star prospect? And how many five star prospects have come out of Hawaii? What was Mariota and Teo’s ratings coming out of high school?
AWESOME … another Manuwai on the roster … if he’s half as good as Cuz Vince he should be fine … 6-1 / 255 … can you say H-Back … a replacement for #4 in short yardage situations ???

Stephen any updates on Eperone.
Congrats to the walkons but the journey for them has just begun.

Ulu Perry was not a 5 star player, he was a 4* (for both Scout and ESPN). Manti was a 5* player, the first I had seen from Hawai’i in quite some time. Mariota was actually not very highly recruited. Marcus was rated a 2* or 3* by most services I believe. He was evaluated by many schools, if I remember correctly Stanford, Notre Dame, USC, and Utah showed interest. However, scholarship offers only came from Washington (Pre Peterson) and Oregon. I don’t believe Hawai’i even offered, much less really put forward an effort to recruit him, nor did they try to recruit Manti.
I think the success of UH under Chow, or lack thereof, was set up by the previous regimes lack of effort in this area. Though he made enough of his own mistakes for sure.
Hope all the walk-ons find a place with the Warriors! It takes courage to follow one’s dreams, and that’s a good way for them to start.
None of the three can be characterized as a “Rudy”. Real athletes here.
RE: #9
Only offers came from Oregon (Helfrich) and Memphis (Stutzmann). Rated 3 star from Rivals and 2 star from ESPN.
I’m happy to hear that!. But anyone out there knows? Do we have any major transfer from other large universities this year not last year!. I know that Ulu-Perry from UCLA he came back home to Hawaii. How about others big names?. Like former Alabama quarterback now playing for University of Nevada Reno.
Glad to see another Maui boy made the team! #UpCon3

Thanks for the Hendrie update. I think the guy has huge upside. Looks like the type of athlete UH only gets to dream about.
This may not be the most talented group of offensive linemen UH has ever had, but as far back as I can remember for this upcoming season this may be the deepest we have ever been at the position. We its all said and done we may have some 3rd stringers who could have started on previous teams.
Sort of expected a kicker/punter to walk on…
Oh well.
But what a great threesome these future
UH players are. Brains and Braun.
Season ticket renewals are out. Very good to have them come out when recruiting news is fresh in everyone’s mind.
RE: #17
Kickers and punters cannot walk on during this period because players are not allowed to practice with balls.
UH posted a “maybe” head women’s volleyball coaching position a couple of days ago in search of interested candidates. I thought that was weird, but now KITV News reported that UH has posted the football DC position to its website. “The application window opened February 6 and closes at 4:30 pm HST on Monday, February 13. The job posting specifies that it is pending position vacancy.” So this is the new standard at UH Athletics. I suppose it’s the smart move.
Vince’s cousin looks like could be a solid H-back candidate….

Are these alternative coaching vacancies?
Anyone out there know the status of Ralph Taufaasau who committed to UH ???

808warriorfan,
Wasn’t he the WR that decommitted because he thought he would get a better offer elsewhere, but didn’t?
