Warrior rules

It is fitting that for the new chapter in Warrior football, there will be, well, new chapters.

When the Warriors report to training camp on Aug. 1, in addition to playbooks, they will receive a notebook of guidelines. The material was culled from guidelines used at other colleges and in the pros, as well as head coach Norm Chow’s preferences.

To be sure, there will be standards — and non-compliance punishments — focusing on behavior, appearance and attitude. But it won’t just be about law and order. There also will guidelines on setting team and personal goals, as well as an emphasis on academics.

UH already has a code of conduct, and the athletic department has a student-athlete handbook. But the UH football guide book is expected to be more specific.

    Just have a few very strict rules. Too many rules means will be easy to break one of them. It is tough to be a college coach keeping a 105 players in line.

    How’s this for a rule that is easily broken: DON’T DRINK ALCOHOL.

    Pat Riley included that in his list of DON’TS. He posted it in the locker room when he was head coach.

    Hey Mo, no apology needed. I get slow fingers (only two, never learned to type in school).

    Like the idea of the rules and guidelines. Teamwork needs discipline, which is somewhat of a lost practice these days, given that individuality, chest thumping, me-me personas are given more air time than the team concept.

    I really don’t care if the malcontents do not abide by Chow’s rules and leave. I’d like to see a TEAM perform and not a group of individuals assembled.

    Rules are needed, but need to keep sight of compassion, common sense, understanding, guidance, etc. in dealing with young people. These are student-athletes.

    I suspect this is s ST’s official story in the Principal’s office. But seriously, I think we have all noticed that his rules are generally followed over the years.

    Annoddah Historical Note:

    I had to search for this one. ST has laid out blog behavior rules 3-4 times in the past 6 years. Mostly variations on this first set from December 31, 2006, when the blog comment numbers were nearing 80 per day (highest of all Advertiser blogs?).

    I wish to thank everyone for their participation and interest in the blog. It’s been a great six months.

    Every so often I’m reminded this space is owned by a family newspaper. There are certain behavioral standards that need to be met.

    While we appreciate the traffic and, of course, the contributions, we’re now establishing some rules:

    • No name calling.

    • No personal insults to forum participants (and that includes punny references to people’s online names). This rule does not have a sarcasm loophole.

    • Argue fairly.

    • No proxies. The opinion you express is your own.

    • No more titles as nicknames, especially the sort that makes you seem smarmy. Suggestion: If, say, you consider yourself to be the voice of rational thinking, call yourself Solomon. Since I lack wisdom, I would prefer to go by the name Addanosolomon.

    • No taglines. That’s just annoying.

    • No whining. And, especially, no whining about getting deleted, because that whine will be deleted.

    Yeah, I know I’m being a party-pooper. But on the chance that one of our administrators will actually read this blog, I don’t want to get called into the principal’s office to explain the debate between passion orange and guava juice. After all, all fruit drinks are equally tasteful.

    Is there going to be an Away-Gate for the USC game? Is there going to be a pre-season fundraiser at Murphy’s?

    For those of you who are interested in the future of Aloha Stadium as an athletic facility, there are two state agency meetings next week in which their agendas include discussions about planning & implementing ACT 282 which establishes a long-term fund to upgrade the Stadium itself by generating revenues through parking lot developments over the next kazillion years.

    Proposed (re)developments will include covered parking in the buildings which will expand the number of spaces available to the public.

    The Public Land Development Corporation meets on Wednesday at 2 pm in the ground floor conference room of the Kalanimoku Building directly across Punchbowl Street from the State Capitol.

    The Stadium Authority meets on Thursday at 10 am in the conference room behind the box offices. The Authority has already set up a three-member committee to work with PLDC.

    The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation’s Transit-Oriented Committee will also be working directly with the two state agencies. As of this writing, HART is focusing on the East Kapolei to Pearl City and the Kalihi to Kaka`ako Mauka segments.

    In reality that means: “don’t get caught”.

    No coach ever expects their players in college or the pros to follow this to the letter. Not even coaches at BYU or Notre Dame.

    Case in point it’s common law/rule to not murder anyone and 99.9% of the human population sticks to it.

    Yet, how many “No Left Turn” signs do we see and how many violate that law/rule? Way more than 99.9%.

    Rules are subjective. How one is raised, taught, or carries themselves overall determines what rules/laws we decidefollow.

    There’s no rule about legal-aged players drinking during the offseason.

    But there’s a rule against drinking and driving. They’ve set up designated drivers. But they absolutely don’t want people to drink and drive.

    I’ve eaten at the restaurant on the corner of Tchapatoulis St. (it was on Diners, Driveins @ Dives). Not bad, but I enjoyed the trolley ride in the Garden District a lot. Wish I could have had more oyster po’boys & soft shell crabs.

    Ooooo, Dookie Chase! I ate there before Katrina. Took them a couple of years to clean & renovate, but it’s a classic Nawlins restaurant. Gotta go there!

    Re: Places to eat in NOLA

    We held our *Tsaiko Tsick Call CC* at the St. Charles Japanese Sushi Buffet. It is located at 2128 St, Charles Blvd in the Garden District. It is on the Trolley line if you want to ride there on something historic. It’ll give you an idea of what our rail line will look like by the time they get it up and running!

    It was a Sushi place that was on par with some of the best Sushi houses in Hawaii as far as the quality and quantity of their sushi. What set them apart was their all-you-can-eat price of only $12.99. (I was able to negotiate a $10.99 deal for our Tsaiko group).

    Some of the Sushi rolls included stuffed shrimp and crab from out of the Gulf Stream waters, and Cajun creations like ‘gator meat, crawdads and other exotic Swamp Creatures that made the Jambalaya Stew taste so onolicious.

    All of the type of foods you would find on an Ala Carte Menu in a fine Japanese Restaurant can be ordered there, at no extra charge. (I believe LizK has photos posted on her FB album that captures the spirit of that eatery).

    The Servers were constantly at your elbow for all your beverage needs. I know they were tipped very well. Plus, a certain Hollywood CPA added a tip of $100 to include in their tip jar when we settled things with the owner.

    Give them a try…you’ll be glad you did!

    In the military, every morning, if you were too sick to go to work, you reported for sick call and a doctor would determine if you were fit for duty.

    It was the morning after the NY’s eve parties, and every body was still feeling a bit under the weather from all the parties. So we all needed to report for sick call. This particular restaurant definetly filled the bill.

If it weren’t for her BP, she would have been on ST’s SMU list.

    We have had cc’s out there on the Windward side at Bay View GC, and a place out at Aikahi Shopping center. Maybe it’s time we had something out that way again.

    old school dave…bull quezada was a beast back then. 3 for 2. quite a specimen. i believe we were in the final three. he visited here too.

    utah get lots of salt in the desserts.

    waikiki get lots of salt in the ocean.he could fit in with the nc offense. be a great complement to iosefa, gregory, etc. he has size and speed to play either position and fullback.

    that would take the mystery out of who is second string.

    Quezada tripped to Utah, UH & UW before enrolling at BYU in Jan 2010.

    Saw considerably playing time in 2010 and 2011 so hasn’t yet redshirted.

    Probably lost focus on football understandably when his brother (only 1 year older) was killed in a freak car accident in Nov 2011.
