Warrior football: Thursday’s workouts

After Wednesday’s break, the Warriors were back on the field — and in the weight room — for another round of offseason conditioning. One of the highlights is the race from the Ching Athletic Complex field to the top of the parking structure. Our blog host/photographer … um, uh … was unable to photograph the race because, well, they were too fast.

Getting good recruits! Keep em coming! 1st?

  2. alnbama January 26, 2017 10:27 am

Let’s continue to build the walls, both on offensive and defensive. Warriors football success will depend on the ability to control the lines of scrimmage.

  3. Warrior4Life January 26, 2017 10:36 am

    Hey Stephen,

Haven’t seen Ulu-Perry in your pics so far. Is he participating in this offseason conditioning?

  4. kahuna January 26, 2017 11:05 am

#3 I don’t know what is up with Ulu Perry but I don’t think the fact that you not seeing their picture means they not participating.

There are over a hundred players on the team and Stephan can only post a handful a day.

There are plenty of players I wonder if they are participating and never saw their picture…. Freddie Holly, Ales Sunia, Esperone Moananu, Devon Stubblefield, Nic Tom, Kalen Hicks, etc…

I think the most important thing is the summer and fall workouts. This offseason stuff is important but not as important as the summer and fall workout. Some of these athletes might be taking extra hard class in the spring and are not participating full time in these workouts so they can go light in the fall.

    NO HULU….CALL MAGOO…LOL

  5. H-Man January 26, 2017 11:05 am

Thanks for pics. Kingjames Taylor looks trim for someone his size (listed 6-4/305).

  6. Maddog59 January 26, 2017 11:07 am

Matt-Moose-Murphy has come a long way. Hope he gets upwards of 290 and gets on the field. Good Luck Matt!

  9. Sangamon Keith January 26, 2017 11:26 am

Stephen … why nothing on the blog about Brandon Kipper? Do you wait to talk with the recruit before posting about commitment?

  10. Petey808 January 26, 2017 12:36 pm

I’ve been hearing some things about big Fred Ulu-Perry that I hope aren’t true. I’m really hoping he’ll be ready to go this year. Great job on the pics ST!

  11. Da Punchbowl Kid January 26, 2017 1:02 pm

    Godd tstuff, Tstephen!

Are the wire framed hurdles only for the bigs? Looks like a prudent idea in case of a slip or fall.

Was this posted ? Finally – a “week zero” game.

    UH-Vanderbilt Scheduled To Meet In 2022, ’23

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai’i and Vanderbilt will play a home-and-home football series in 2022 and 2023 marking the first meeting between the schools.

The scheduled dates are Aug. 27, 2022 in Honolulu and Sept. 30, 2023 in Nashville, Tenn.

The 2022 meeting will occur during “Week Zero,” a new NCAA rule that allows UH and its opponents to play one week prior to the official start of the college football season.

UH’s last meeting against a Southeastern Conference opponent was versus Florida, Aug. 30, 2008 in Gainesville, Fla. Hawai’i has hosted an SEC foe just three times – Tennessee in 1975 and Alabama in 2002 and ’03.

    #6 Maddog59 Matt-Moose-Murphy? Come on…

  19. clyde January 26, 2017 5:11 pm

Boise State and San Diego State trying to make a late run at Micah Vanterpool, but he’s unwavering in his pledge to Hawaii.

“The day I committed, (Boise State) called me and said, ‘What’s up, Micah?’ ” Vanterpool said. “I don’t care if anybody came in. I don’t want to go back on my word. My word is my bond.”

In this day and age of entitlement, found this to be quite refreshing. Props to Micah.

  20. Maddog50 January 26, 2017 5:18 pm

M L Warrior my apologies! I have followed the progress and development of Matt Norman since he arrived. He is one of my personal favorites! The Moose nickname caused a cranial malfunction, I had a long time friend Moose Murphy and it just clicked wrong. Google Moose Murphy Chicago icon. I want Matt to see the starting lineup this year and have faith he will! GoWarriors!!!!

  21. Derek January 26, 2017 7:09 pm

Mr. Vanterpool is a rock solid commitment. He’s sold on Side Street Inn pork chops, fried chicken, and fried rice!!!!! I’ve been there many times. It’s so delicious!!
    Go Micah!

UH vs Tennessee in 1960 at Knoxville

final score was 66-0 or near that and 2 stories still keeping rattling around in me brain – 1st, Tom Price, youngest brother of Larry Price, is said to bawl like a baby in the locker room after the game ( we never let him forget ) – 2nd, Samson Rodrigues, who was dark and had kinky hair was forced to the back of the bus by the driver who told him ” I don’t care if your from Hawaii, back of the bus – other white team mates backed him up and they were told ” back of the bus with your friend”

hopefully, I will be able to attend the Vandy game in 2023 — never been to Knoxville — have property in Murray, KY on Kentucky Lake near the Tennessee border

as I said before, those of us who were in our 30’s or 40’s in the 70’s and 80’s will be in our 80s and 90s in 2023

    what a great feeling!!!!!

  23. A-House January 26, 2017 7:15 pm

it is being reported that the DB from Kahuku is wavering after a visit from the Oregon St HC

hoped he would be like Vanterpool whose “word is his bond”

if he goes, don’t look back cause your spot will be given to a player who “wants to play of UH”

“heart, all you need is heart”

  24. Captain Ron January 26, 2017 7:31 pm

    Hey A-House!

@21 Mo betta you go Nashville for the Vandy game. Knoxville is the home of UT. My brother lives near Nashville, so I may try to make it, too. Maybe we can tailgate!

  25. Haleakala January 26, 2017 7:32 pm

    A-House:
I’m not familiar with the 1960 Tennessee game but in 1955, Hawaii went up to Nebraska stadium with 27 members of their team. 40 point underdogs, they pulled off the unthinkable and shut out the powerful Nebraska tram on their home field to win 6-0. Several members of the UH team were from Maui – Kenji Kawaguchi, Bruno Ariyoshi, and Louis Silva. It is probably the biggest upset in UH football history. Here is a story of the game feom the Star Bulletin.

  26. Buffoman January 26, 2017 7:47 pm

Where is that DE from Punahou going? I see that he is a Hawaii prospect but I highly doubt he is considering UH. Did I miss something regarding Ulu-Perry? Is he still on the team?

  27. H-Man January 26, 2017 8:07 pm

Not concerned about the safety from Kahuku. Like to see coaching staff get Dillan Misa’alefua instead; see his video http://www.hudl.com/profile/4764167/dillan-misaalefua

  28. Mauian5 January 27, 2017 3:27 am

    From Maui News
Jimmy Morimoto, a Baldwin High School graduate and former head football coach, has been named Director of Football Operations for the University of Hawaii.
Morimoto confirmed that today is his first day on the job. He has held similar positions for Nevada-Las Vegas and most recently Fresno State.
Morimoto said his duties would include “daily operations of the team, you’re kind of the coach’s right-hand man. He’s going to make decisions and you have got to make it happen.”
Morimoto was Fresno State’s first director of player personnel for the last two seasons after he held a similar position at UNLV, where he started as an assistant video coordinator when he left Baldwin in 2007.

Maybe these three, Jaden Lewis, Marcus Carrasco and Daiyan Henley, will fill out Warriors’ recruiting since Scout moved them up on UH’s list of offered players.

    Haleakala:

I was a student boarding at Atherton YMCA and several members of the football, basketball and volleyball players were in the dorm with us back in 1960 and Tom Price was with us as was Damon Waitley, Casper Schittle (sp) .

Damon was our running back and Casper was our QB.

  34. A-House January 27, 2017 6:55 am

    H-man:

I see what you mean – he would fit nicely into a DT position at 6’6″ and 300#s

who the heck is UH DL coach? never got adjusted to the new coaching changes.

  35. Ohana Hawaii January 27, 2017 6:57 am

A-House that were the bad A** Days!. That never happen again at University of Hawaii. Big names like you said and even Golden Richards wide receiver who in up at Dallas Cowboys. I hope new the Generations of Rainbow Warriors become as twice as great like before!. But even showing that to the Hawaiian fans!. They have to reschedule their football schedule every years!. Next season!. Two hard teams UCLA & BYU. A lot’s of returnees UMASS. And what this Western Carolina come on!. Why don’t you schedule North Dakota or South Dakota State. Plus a Big 12 teams. You program needs the money! So start playing the big boys!. And most of get out of the Mountain West and try to get in the Pacific 12. Or other! . Because look what happen to Idaho and New Mexico State!. Mountain West kick them out and look what here there are now!. Like the last season Idaho beat UNLV at home!. And copy UNLV is playing the same teams like Hawaii do!. Because they’re playing Ohio State over just like Hawaii did. Let show Crazy the University of Hawaii football program schedule like South Florida, LSU, West Virginia, USC & BYU!. Or reschedule next year UMASS, UCLA, North Dakota, Middle Tennessee again and BYU that be awesome to see!. Because, I’m really like!. When Rolovich and the UNR plays all the big boys on their schedule it was biggest time!. That is why, I’m did like to look at their schedule it were really hard teams!. They were 100% better then they brother school UNLV! That is why, I’m had respect for Head Coach Rolovich!. He still have to get better coaches staffs yet to be there with the big boys!. Most of all a offensive coordinators has the same mind like he wants to play on the field every game time!. Why don’t they get the offensive coordinator from North Dakota? He is 100% great for UH!. If something happens to Rolovich?

  37. Ohana Hawaii January 27, 2017 7:15 am

No! A- House!. You have to remember this that ? They are a lot’s of 300 or more in the NFL then before. Plus they can run like running back!. You may ask a lot’s of quarterbacks in the NFL. Look at David Carr and Marcus Mariota guess who hit them? They was 250 or 289!. They were over 300 lb. Look at the hit on Miami quarterback his first year in the NFL!. What did he say after that? The 300lb. plus aren’t slow like College game!. They are fast and fast then before! You all should check out on YouTube on the hit from a 6’11 350lb. Offensive line Hit a 5’9 195lb. DB. Full on hit!.

  38. Young Buck January 27, 2017 9:53 am

Okay sorry but Ohana Hawaii you need to proof read your posts man cause it’s hard to understand what you’re even trying to say sometimes. But I have to disagree with you about hawaii’s schedule. I think the schools we’re playing this upcoming season are a good set of teams. I know the athletic program is needs money but I don’t believe playing these huge powerhouse teams in order to get a payout for every non conference game is the way to do it. They’re just gonna dig themselves a hole that will make it harder for them to get to a bowl game. Hawaii needs to become a consistent bowl team and get more people in the stands to hopefully generate more revenue. We tried the pay for play games with the last regime and all it did was get us off to a 0-3 start to the season and after watching our warriors get killed on national tv it’s hard to get people in the stands for conference play even if they’re playing well. And we don’t need to bring in new coaches. Nothing is going to happen to Rolo. And coach smith did a great job calling plays last season, yes the offense was inconsistent at times but that was expected. We can’t expect them to be a well oiled machine in just their first year together. I expect the offense and the defense to be much improved this year with players being in the system for a year. The players and the coaches will only get better with more experience under their belt.
