luau1-300x225

Former UH punter Alex Dunnachie has been invited to play in the Casino Del Sol All-Star Game in Tucson on Jan. 11, 2013.

Dunnachie leaves Hawaii today to train in California. He still has not selected an agent.

This year, the volleyball Warriors will have “VASTEC” on the back of their practice jerseys.

Translation: Volleyball, academics, strength, teamwork, effort/energy, choice.

The Warriors opened training camp today.

There is a 50-50 chance that opposite attacker Jonas Umlauft will return to the volleyball Warriors for the 2014 season.

After completing his sophomore season in May 2011, Umlauft spent the next 19 months attending school in his native Germany. He is scheduled to complete work on an engineering degree this coming summer.

In e-mails with the UH coaches, Umlauft has indicted he would consider returning to UH to pursue a master’s degree.

    Good morning everyone!

    GO VASTEC!

  3. Kevin December 27, 2012 9:35 am

    First FIDO, then VASTEC…

At least throw a hashtag “#” infront of them. Get it trending at least. 😉

    Howzit Tsaikos!

Yes! It’s Warrior volleyball time! First up, BYWho in Provo next weekend. 😈 Why in da he$$ do we start the season with MPSF matches??? Thanks, MPSF. Not.

Do I have to wait till after 1/4 for my season tickets? Kinda cutting close aren’t they, considering the home opener is on the 10th.

  5. Bigislandkurt December 27, 2012 9:36 am

Read Ferd’s column regarding Rolo. Good points, but I just don’t see Chow hiring Rolo. I’m sure Chow has his guy in mind already. Rolo is not from the Chow tree of coaches. And for all intents and purposes, Chow is the OC. The new guy who comes in will probably be more of a WR coach.

The only way I see Rolo returning is when the Chow regime exits.

    BIK

At first, I thought it was the name of an Eastern European player.

The Vastec family isn’t as large as the Imua family.

  7. V-Ball Fan December 27, 2012 9:41 am

How are the local boys on the Warrior volleyball team doing? Any news on who the starters will be?

  8. Stephen Tsai December 27, 2012 9:43 am

Apparently UH’s “essential” employees include coaches, trainers and parking guards.

  9. BigWave96744 December 27, 2012 9:44 am

I thought Gib secured sponsorship from the Bobby Curran weight lost program.. oh wait that’s Vasper

  10. gobows December 27, 2012 9:46 am

ST – Did Jonas “the germanator” Umlauft say “I’ll be back”

  11. Stephen Tsai December 27, 2012 9:46 am

No decisions on the starters except for J.P. Marks. But it is not known if Marks will start at opposite or on the left side.

Good battle in the middle, setter and libero.

Ryan Leung is challenging at opposite. Joby Ramos is in a two-man battle at setter. Matt Cheape and Koby Kanetake are in a tight competition at libero.

In all, there are 13 new players.

And a new coach (Sean Carney).

  12. BigWave96744 December 27, 2012 9:46 am

I still get a kick out of “He Hate Me” from the Vince McMahon XFL league

    gobows:

I think he said: Call me, maybe.

  14. gobows December 27, 2012 9:50 am

#5 that’s how I see it, but I also don’t expect NC to stay for 10 years, maybe 5 or 6. If you can be successful at UH, then you can do it at any school in the country.

  15. Kevin December 27, 2012 9:51 am

I still like the XFL idea of skipping the coin toss and having each team select one guy to sprint for the ball laying out on the 50 yard line to start the game.

The “no fair catch” rule was funny to watch and VERY entertaining, but it’s a bit much.

  17. Buffoman December 27, 2012 10:37 am

Is there another local player in the future that has the “it” factor like Allen Allen (sp?)? That young man was something special and while some may argue Yuval made men’s V-ball popular, I say that it was Allen Allen who got things rocking in old Klum.

  18. Stephen Tsai December 27, 2012 10:48 am

While Jay is away, AD workers no stay.

    Sheesh.

Where the heck is everybody? The first-floor door is locked. I think only Panda workers are working today.

Temple: We hear that Matt Rhule has interest in bringing on Nevada offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Nick Rolovich to serve as offensive coordinator. (Football Scoop)

My, my, my. Why would a person leave Nevada for Temple? Me doesn’t think it’s going to happen.

  23. Bigislandkurt December 27, 2012 11:34 am

If Temple offers more $$$ and better opportunity/exposure, I’m sure Rolo will listen.

    BIK

  24. mikey December 27, 2012 11:41 am

Wasn’t that same offer from Temple last year before he left for Nevada, close to home?

Rolo better off closer to home. Go west young man.

  25. Kevin December 27, 2012 11:42 am

    Take the money is RIGHT.

We’re all going over the cliff anyway…

  26. cocobean December 27, 2012 11:45 am

Rolo should go to Temple. Broaden his horizon, chance to formulate the game plan and call the plays. Won’t have someone looking over his shoulder like in HI or NV.

Big East vs MWC pay scale.

  27. kifi December 27, 2012 12:02 pm

#24 – I think it was UMass last year.

  28. BigWave96744 December 27, 2012 12:03 pm

UMass was Rolo’s job until Ault came calling

  29. Stephen Tsai December 27, 2012 12:12 pm

Rolo needs to run his own offense.

He doesn’t make the calls in Nevada.

  30. A-House December 27, 2012 12:14 pm

Jonas coming back is both a blessing and downer IF the team has built a great chemistry and the outside hitters/opposites did well in 2013.

Yet, it would be great to see that young man back in Hawaii.

What happened to his “girl friend” who is also from Germany? Both went back home to get their degrees?

  31. kifi December 27, 2012 12:17 pm

#22. Of course interest from Temple doesn’t mean that any contact was made.

  32. Wes'side Warrior December 27, 2012 12:20 pm

    Howzit, Gang!

Hope you all had a great Christmas!

And wishing you all a terrific New year!

As for us, been busy as usual. Got our last volunteer day in for the Toys for Tots program out here yesterday. What a long month this has been! We actually had sleet for a minute in our area. A Minute! Hahaha! Stay warm and safe, everyone! Hoping my son’s paperwork goes through at UH, since we’re all moving back home after his HS graduation this May…

  33. Duster December 27, 2012 12:21 pm

At first glance, I thought VASTEC was VASECTOMY. Ouch!

  34. Leron December 27, 2012 12:27 pm

#17 my pick for best player is Tui Tuileta from Punahou. When he’s not busy playing QB in the fall, he’s led his club team to 5 straight National titles. That team was so good as 12 year olds that they played and beat a lot of older girls teams in club ball. That team also has a setter named Micah Ma’a who has some pretty good Vball genes himself.

  35. Buffoman December 27, 2012 12:46 pm

#34 Wow, but can we keep him here? Allen Allen was from Castle HS and may have been overlooked by the other “name” schools that seem to be on the Punahou Menu.

  36. nyuhtx December 27, 2012 1:01 pm

Congrats to Alex Dunnachie and a thanks for all he contributed to UH. Remember your alma mater when you start making the big bucks!

  37. Former UH Athlete December 27, 2012 1:07 pm

About damn time the Nagatani Center got a face-lift. I remember the cramped computer stalls and not enough table space for group studies.

I spent plenty of time working on my CS 151 class (computer programming) down there… Oh dear god do I hate Java…. 5 hours of computer work just to make the computer say “hello” and add/subtract. I felt relieved to get my C in that class.

  38. BigWave96744 December 27, 2012 1:15 pm

It’s funny when Reno smashed Hawaii some folks gave Rolo all praise.

When Nevada sputtered and lost, it was Ault’s play calling.

Same remarks echoed in 2010 & 2011. Praise the OC, blame the HC.

With June and Norm both get the credit and blame.

    Stephen #29,

there are a lot of folks who will disagree with you.

I, for one, am not in that boat.

Before anointed as a great Coordinator, one must be able to make the calls and bite the bullet when it fails

  39. BigWave96744 December 27, 2012 1:19 pm

Former UH Athlete, I think you would have gotten a higher grade if your output was “Hello, world” 🙂

  40. jimmy the lock December 27, 2012 1:21 pm

  44. Curt December 27, 2012 1:35 pm

Though I would like to see Rolo back at UH, I think Chow will pick someone he’s worked with. I just hope that this individual has had lots of experience and success in coaching. If I recall correctly, some of his assistants had minimal coaching experience. In the past, I was impressed with the staff that JJ had like Mac, Glanville, Mouse, Miano, Lee brothers, etc. Let the young pups get their OJT elsewhere.

To me there is a difference between tweaking (not the batu kine) and executing.

It’s like in auto racing. The head mechanic can tweak the engine perfectly, but the driver might miss shift or let the pedal off the metal.

  47. BigWave96744 December 27, 2012 1:53 pm

Miano never coached before JJ hired him

Greg McMackin: DC – Seattle Seahawks

George Lumpkin: LBs – Kamehameha School (UH assistant 73-95)

Wes Suan: RBs – Linfield College

Mike Cavanaugh: OL – Quality Control SD Chargers

Vantz Singletary: DL – Southern Univ.

Dennis McKnight: ST – High School Assitant (San Diego area)

Dan Morrison: QBs – Punahou School HC

Ron Lee: WRs – St. Louis School Assistant

Rich Miano: DBs – Private Business/Radio Color

Carrying a variety of clutches, purses, and tote bags helps build customer loyalty and repeat sales. The best manufacturers of Italian luxury handbags will give you the choices that you – and your customers – need. For example, you should be able to choose the styles of bags you want, as well as from among four different varieties of exotic skins and more than 30 different tonalities. The Engineer at the Golf Course

A pastor, a doctor and an engineer wait for a particularly slow group of golfers. The engineer fumes, “What’s with these guys? We’ve been waiting for 15 minutes!”

The pastor says, “Hey, here comes the groundskeeper. Let’s have a word with him.”

“Say, George, what’s with that group ahead of us? They’re rather slow, aren’t they?” the doctor asks.

The groundskeeper tells them that the other golfers are a group of blind firefighters who lost their sight saving the clubhouse from a fire and that they come and play for free whenever they want.

The group is silent for a moment.

The pastor says, “That’s so sad. I will say a special prayer for them tonight.”

The doctor says, “Good idea. I’m going to contact my ophthalmologist buddy and see if there’s anything he can do for them.”

The engineer says, “Why can’t these guys play at night?”

    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Coach’s OC selection will also affect the decisions of those offensive players still considering departing.

    STAY TUNED!!!

  75. HawaiiMongoose December 27, 2012 8:56 pm

VASTEC? Hmm, don’t know about that one. Using an acronym to communicate core values is a good, proven team-building strategy. But a six-letter word conveying seven values (since the E has two meanings) seems like overkill to me. It’s like, we couldn’t decide on the three or four most important things to emphasize so we threw them all in.

Sorry, I don’t mean to be negative but that’s just how it strikes me.

Plus VASTEC sounds like the evil computer megamind plotting to take over the planet and subjugate the inferior humans.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

After seeing Duke play Cincinnati I can see why Schroder sought a transfer to play football. The QB for Duke is a physical specimen and can crank the football. They had the game but Bearcats came back to beat them. Schroder would have sat on the pines this season for Duke instead of eating a lot of turf playing for Hawaii.

    Old School Dave,

Thanks for posting JJ’s initial staff at UH. I believe Ron Lee was an offensive coordinator at Oregon Tech. Besides playing extensively in the NFL, Dennis McKnight was a high school and college (Grossmont College and San Diego State) coach.

  81. clyde December 27, 2012 9:46 pm

I hope Jason Gesser applies for the OC position. A little light in experience — one year HC in high school; two years at Idaho, one as running backs coach when he was named the WAC’s top recruiter and the other as OC and later interim head coach after Akey was fired — and a little young (33). But he’s got a lot going for him. Tough competitor, great leader (2-time all-state QB; 3-time captain at Wazzu and Co-Player of the Year of the Pac-10 w/Carson Palmer) and — if memory serves — a personable guy. Note that he was in Hawaii over the holidays, but not sure if he still considers this home.

I have to agree that Rolo leaving is slim, but one never knows when $$$ is mentioned. Ault is the lowest paid coach in the Mountain West, so one can guess that his staff doesn’t get paid that well either by conference standards.

A quote that might indicate that Rolo’s job as an OC is limited in Ault’s Pistol.

“Ault should move to athletic director, let Rolovich do the job he was hired to do and the new head coach should double as the defensive coordinator.”

Why did Sam Biscaro leave the team? did he transfer to a better volleyball program?

    UNR’s OC & DC salaries:

” … Offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich ($125,975) and defensive coordinator Mike Bradeson ($150,974) were two of the lowest-paid coordinators in the MWC. …”

    Found this in the RGJ.

Coach Chow hires recruiters….. I think Miano would help Chow recruit in the islands.

Regardless of Rolo’s limited role despite his OC title at UNR, just not sure how well Rolo would mesh with Coach’s “old school” methods and ways…..considering that all the other offensive coaches (Rauscher, Wiesehan, Uperesa) have all coached previously under and/or with Coach and all basically understood his coaching approach, style, and philosophies before even joining the UH staff.

    #103,

The only way that happens is…..IF Daronte Jones decides to move on.

    #93,

Tigi’s still got some school work to take care of…..like Moala….and possibly Tua’au.

Still too early to count any of them yet.

Could be Deja Vu…..like last JC signees (Brown, Fields, Turner).
