Update: Ben Jay
Ben Jay’s 921-day tenure as athletic director came to an end yesterday.
The past month, he was working out of a third-floor office in the athletic complex. Even after Dave Matlin was hired as AD, Jay was conducting UH business, attending meetings, and visiting with engineers.
During his tenure — he announced his “resignation” in December but remained on the payroll through the end of this month — his greatest impact was in facilities. His final project was the reconstruction of the training room, which he helped push to the top of the CIP list. It is not known if he will have a role when UH meets with the NCAA over the basketball situation this summer.
Jay and his family depart tomorrow for Ohio, where he will stay with his brother while pursuing job leads.
Good luck to Ben Jay and his family and wish them well. He looks like the stress is gone in the picture with Yoshida.
Met Ben several times always very pleasant sincere and nice guy. Wish him the best-
Difficult to run a good 40 time when your hands and legs are tied together.
Oops…wrong blog.
Good luck to Ben and his family. Ben did his best. His tenure at UH was too short to make a long lasting impact. UH Athletics will live and die by the State legislature.
Will Matlin be given more lattitude? Will his connections finally help our program?
GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!
Ben Jay and Chancellor Tom Apple were simpatico with the athletic program. But as Kifi correctly pointed out: “Difficult to run a good 40 time when your hands and legs are tied together.”
I do not get the impression that the present Chancellor has helped the UH Athletic Program in any shape, way or form but I don’t know what goes on behind the academic veil on Upper Campus.
Perhaps he too is handicapped by too many outside chiefs including the legislature.
Great Morning All!
Best wishes to Former AD (insert name).
Was there an accounting of light bulbs done before the EOM?
Yes Akamai, all beans present and accounted for. Hehe.
Chancellor will need to provide needed support to our New AD.
Good luck to Ben Jay…He tried his best and unfortunately, it was not the best situation for him and the UH. Once Apple got the axe, I’m afraid his support waned within UH administration. Gib and his escapades didn’t help anyone, so BJ became a casualty. I wish him the best!
What Kifi said, what tom said, what Akamai Okole said, and, good luck to Ben Jay.
GO WARRIORS, WAHINE AND RAINBOWS!
Good noonish everyone
Good luck to Ben Jay!
We probably need to view the AD as a manager instead of investor. ADs aren’t saviors, as it’s been proven.
Aloha to Ben Jay. I have no clear idea of how possible or impossible his job was. I suspect at minimum it was very difficult. I wonder if UH is an outlier in terms of its ambivalence about athletic programs or if other schools face exactly the same problem. There are obviously supporters and interested parties. But there are others (particularly upper campus others) who have minimal interest and are angered by the monies constantly allocated to the athletic dept. The reality is that there are other very legitimate ways this money could be spent at the university and it seems unlikely that the athletic dept will be able to balance its budget any time soon. As many have said many times a winning football program is probably the most effective way that revenues will be generated.
Had to access 3 other blog entries before arriving at this one. Why? To gather more views? This is Mickey Mouse at it’s finest. None of the other blogs at the SA has this problem, only this one. Some one needs to speak up. The pat answer readers receive is that nothing can be done. I’m not buying it.
Legislature and Upper Campus just don’t get along. Legislature needs to retake control of UH. That’s the only way more money will be fun eled to athletics. As it stands now, upper campus is already holding on the parking and signage revenues.
if Lassner remains true to his word, men’s programs will and athletics will be downsized or eventually cease to exist. Sorry but I’m not paying to see D2 opponents.
The trojans now….coaching staff …
Head coach and offensive coordinator: Rod York
Wide receivers: Moe Tauilo
Wide receivers: Rusty Alama
Slotbacks: Tito Sallas
Offensive line: Hideki Aoki
Quarterbacks: Joshua Ursery
Running backs: Jeff Cadiz
Defensive line: Thor Salanoa
Defensive line: Silila Malepeai
Defensive coordinator: Roland Mason
Linebackers: Kendall Purcell
Linebackers: Ma‘a Tanuvasa
Defensive backs: Mike Lundy
Defensive backs: John Kupau
AD’s can be viewed as managers but it sure seem that Stan Sheriff and Ray Nagel were more than that.
The Trojan’s defensive staff has familiar names but not so much on the offensive side. York has a strong defensive history so it’s surprising that he’s the offensive coordinator. I guess you could always learn on the fly.
Imaginary conversation between the UC-Bakersfield AD and the Big West commisssioner.
COM: Hello?
AD: It’s UC-Bakersfield.
COM: Nice win against Ole Miss.
AD: Can we join your conference now?
So this has probably been recited multiple times but how do we get to the latest blog post without having to go through all the old posts. The latest one I have is for kealoha pilares
17.
What happened to all-state wide receiver Deshawn Duncan Benson?
I’m sure somebody liked Ben Jay.
Ma’a Tanuvasa: former UH player and Denver Broncos star. Why Hawai’i? Colorado is a nice place to live. Aspen, Colorado. What happened? Just live there. Graduation in high school is tonight. Neal Blaisdell center.
Not sure. Not popular. Not there. And unheard of. Deshawn.
aloha everyone !! best of luck to BJ !! to bad it did not worker out for you in hawaii !! was hard to do a job when your hands are tie !! or when you need to make coaching moves and higher ups are stoping you !!
Any update on Gus Lavaka? On another note and do not think I have ever seen any interest regarding NHL but the Chicago Blackhawks put the hurt on the goon like Ducks. All they wanted to do was put bodies on them and all the Hawks did was out skate and out stick them!!!! What a game!!!!
The May 26, 2015 “Update: Kealoha Pilares” is the last hawaiiwarriorworld.com/warrior-beat/ article that shows up for me too. For quite a while, the weblink has lagged by a day or so, but I think this is the first time the new articles just don’t appear. It happens in both MS Internet Explore and Firefox. Probably can’t legitimately blame Upper Campus, Ben Jay, or Norm Chow for it … but blog attendance does seem to be mirroring Football attendance, so their might be something there after all 🙂
Yes everyone, the Warrior Beat website is not being updated daily just to piss you off and ST is not doing anything about it.
Just saw a tv show where Baylor leading to its’ stadium has a brick “Bear Walk” made with personalized bricks sponsoed by donations to the program. I can envision the same kind of “Rainbow Warrior Walk” at Aloha Stadium where our team does their pregame walk. I know I would sponsor a brick or two. I’m pretty sure most on this blog would too!
#29 – The burro is funny AND wise! 😆
Why the blog is so hard to get to some days, who can say.
