UH football: Carrying the pigskin

Defensive lineman Zeno Choi, who just completed his first academic year at UH, has shown a willingness — and ability — to fill a role.

The past season, he relinquished a redshirt year to step into the short-handed defensive rotation.

This past spring, he played nose tackle and 3-technique. There were some spring practices when he played every snap during team drills.

This week, Choi fulfilled another role when he joined six friends on a pig-hunting outing. They sent the dogs out at 7 a.m., and when they heard the barking, “the faster guys” raced to the area to finish the job.

Choi’s role was to, literally, piggy-back the boars to the trucks.

Sometimes he would have to carry a 130-pound boar 400 yards.

“Up, down, left, right,” said Choi, noting the path was rarely a straight line.

In all, he noted, “It’s a good workout.”

I’m in favor of satellite camps but man there needs to be some sort of limit put on them,it’s crazy how the Haves can host 30+ camps and the Nots maybe a handful…Hopefully we can send coaches to watch some of these camps to uncover some diamonds in the rough…

  8. Old School Dave May 12, 2016 9:00 am

Coming Soon! Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh will be holding a UM camp down under in Australia, Samoa, and Hawaii this summer.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful day!

imho…these camps have to be restricted to “in state” institutions only with out of state viewing guest, no contact or talk of recruitment. out of state institutions can attend and watch workouts.

  12. 3-Prong May 12, 2016 10:04 am

Pig Huntah Cross Training. Give that man da tusks!

  13. Stephen Tsai May 12, 2016 11:20 am

Reality is Hawaii’s not competing against Michigan. Hawaii is competing against San Diego State, San Jose Stste, Nevada, Fresno State and UNLV. Michigan is doing what it needs to do to compete against Ohio State and Michigan State. It’s good to have the reach, but at the same time, you can’t have close recruiting ties to 4o states. (Word is Michigan is doing 40 camps in 30 days.)

  14. seewhy May 12, 2016 11:27 am

And let’s not forget, UH is always competing against the PAC 12 in recruiting (UCLA, CAL, Oregon, etc..)

  15. z May 12, 2016 12:39 pm

    And Boise St.

  16. Bryson May 12, 2016 12:45 pm

How can you say Hawai’i isn’t competing against Michigan…Hawai’i is competing against everyone when it comes to recruiting USC,Alabama,Washington,Washington State,Michigan…etc…The more these camps happen in places that they didn’t prior the less chance there is of us finding the next Mel Purcell,Isaac Sopoaga,Joey Iosefa,Scott Harding and other players from foreign soil…heck even Amani Purcell went to Penn St before transferring to Hawaii

  17. burro sabio May 12, 2016 12:51 pm

    Am I still being moderated?

  18. burro sabio May 12, 2016 12:52 pm

    Guess not. Howzit everyone.

  19. Stephen Tsai May 12, 2016 1:01 pm

I think there’s a lot of talent in the world.
Sopoaga was at College of the Canyons. Every team had a shot at him.
    Iosefa was a 170-pound quarterback.
Harding was a 24-year-old guy who never wore pads or a helmet before coming here. He paid his own way for the first semester.
Chad Owens was initially beaten out by Britton Komine.
The big schools will always pluck the big guys. It’s teams like Hawaii, with limited resources, that will get by on Money Ball scouting and projections.

burro sabio detention served and completed. ” Congrats”

  21. islandman May 12, 2016 1:26 pm

Spell check or unique spelling ? legislature

  22. BigFan May 12, 2016 1:44 pm

There may be a lot of talent but it is limited and needs to be identified. Schools with the bigger budgets and if they’re allowed even more tools (like these camps) are able to identify that talent more accurately so they don’t miss out on a guy like Sopoanga. Their recruiting should be more effective to the point that it will affect the smaller schools. The majors will now have more eyes on guys like Chad Owens and may not pass on him if they feel like he’s a contributor.
In the past, the only reason more local players were not recruited is that they were not been evaluated thoroughly like they are now.
    Anyway, my two cents.

  23. BigFan May 12, 2016 1:45 pm

    been=being.

  24. jm2375 May 12, 2016 3:31 pm

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

  25. Paniolo May 12, 2016 5:32 pm

Stephen this summmer the Star advertiser sports will be dried up of football news. May I suggest that you make some news of the players that is working our during the summer.. we like to hear how the warriors are doing to prepare for the fall camp. Put some summer warrior football news back in the sports section.

  26. legistlature May 12, 2016 7:30 pm

The major sports will usually be allocated some space on the sports pages every day, and even outof season the most popular sports will often be given space.

  27. legistlature May 12, 2016 8:02 pm

    Relationships-Relationships-Relationships. Writer’s respect for another.
    just guessin

  28. Warrior Dave May 12, 2016 8:14 pm

    #25 Paniolo,

ST always has football news for us even during the off season. He’s got it down!!!

  29. burro sabio May 12, 2016 8:15 pm

JM9876 yes it’s different, usually when people use different to describe me they aren’t talking about my name… it took 3 days to be cleared.

  30. Paniolo May 12, 2016 10:46 pm

#28 Warrior Dave. If Stephen Tsai has Warrior football news, it must be in very small print somewhere in the AD section. I subscribe to the morning StarAdvertiser and during football season, the first section I look is the Sports as I drink my morning coffee.
But now the Sports section is dried up of Warrior football. I can understand that because its off season. I enjoyed news during Spring practice.
What I am saying is for Stephen Tsai to pick up on Warrior football stories of players working out during the summer. If he has Warrior football stories, I haven’t seen any since the last Spring football game.
I enjoy Stephen Tsai’s Warrior football news so I was hoping he talks to his boss, the Sports editor, about having these summer football news from our Warrior football team that is preparing for the new season…

    RE: #29
We’ve seen “el burro sabio” since May 2007.
Do burros lose their el at 9 years old? 😕

  32. SteveM May 13, 2016 12:19 am

Paniolo — I note you first posted here last October (under the “Paniolo” blog name anyway). ST always does exactly what you are asking for through this blog daily. He has since 2007 when The Warrior Beat blog did not shut down at the end of the 2006 season.

But one caveat– ST usually takes vacation during early June, before the bridge classes and unsupervised workouts intensify. Usually.

  33. Maddog50 May 13, 2016 1:42 am

I am a Zeno Choi fan and I wish him the best-he truly has defined “piggy back” ride in this venture and the photos that captured it. Get big get strong and get them Zeno!

  34. Maddog50 May 13, 2016 1:55 am

As usual in some by lines the sky is falling or we’re all gonna die-who really cares if Michigan or anybody else does these satellite camps as Stephen said they meaning the Power Five conferences are not our competition. No matter what there are 25 scholarships per year and that’s that period. These satellite camps to me as far as Michigan is concerned yep they will discover talent, but they will also grow their “M” brand from a marketing standpoint. Sell more merchandise, acquire more fans and generate more money. Don Canham is a legendary AD from Michigan, if you ever wondered how sports merchandise got off the ground look up Don Canham. He is also credited with filling the stadium by about 40% over prior years. How did he do it? Marketing and winning! He hired Bo Schembechler who put a grind em downoffense and stout Defense on the field. These camps will generate prospects but only those that could immediately replace the 4 and 5 star talent that Harbaugh has in his own back yard, remember only 25 scholarships per year no matter what. Marketing is a thing of beauty Nick Rolovich has revived that and moving it forward and over time it will have an impact. Go Warriors!

  35. Bryson May 13, 2016 6:32 am

What people fail to see is that it starts with a team like Michigan doing 30+ camps then other schools follow suit next thing you know every power 5 team is holding 20-30+ satellite camps where does that leave teams like Hawai’i who not only compete against other mid majors for talent but now against power 5 schools as well for players some of whom who would not normally be on their radar if not for the camps…I understand that you can only sign 25 but these schools get creative when it comes to numbers…

SteveM, LOL. I figga that the artist formerly know as D1 does not go by “Da Akamai Okole” so the “el” could go.
