Tick … tick … tick …

Like most Oahu roads, the University of Hawaii athletic complex is under construction.

The latest project is the renovation of the coaches’ locker rooms and, more importantly, the equipment room.

The drop-dead completion deadline is late July. Football’s training camp begins Aug. 1. You can do the math.

UH construction is on the clock.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

  3. tommui May 5, 2014 8:34 am

It would be interesting as a compare and contrast essay/commentary as how the Clarence T.C. Ching building at Damien Memorial is handled and how fast it will be completed.

I don’t want to give odds, but I suspect it will be completed as scheduled next year!

  4. jm2375 May 5, 2014 8:37 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

July will turn into August, then September, then October, then … It might be finished by the end of year.

  5. Stephen Tsai May 5, 2014 8:40 am

I know nothing about construction — not even sentence construction — but it’s amazing how a sky-rise condo can go up faster than that Ching facility.

  6. Stephen Tsai May 5, 2014 8:41 am

But the locker room/equipment room project shouldn’t have that many natural delays. Weather shouldn’t be a concern for an indoor project.

  7. NorthShoreFan May 5, 2014 8:55 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

We should all make predictions on when it’ll be pau. Month, day & year…winner gets round trip to da north shore!

Strange to see how different countries handle different holidays…

Where # 4 jim says…’July will turn into August, then September’, ….here in the Philippines…ne month that ends in ‘ber’…..means it is the x-mas season….n decorations go up for some folks n many businesses will have x-mas goods in stores 4 sale…

Good morning all….have a great Hawaiian morning there…

    IMUA …..WARRIORS…OR RAINBOWS….ur choice…

  9. Buffoman May 5, 2014 9:06 am

I believe that most of the delays have to do with “change orders”. Those then have to be negotiated amongst the folks and that, in a bureaucratic system like UH takes time as no one wants to make a decision.

Contractors want to get done quickly.

  10. chawan_cut May 5, 2014 9:14 am

Are you counting down the hours/minutes/seconds till tonight’s 24 Tv show??

  11. marleysdad May 5, 2014 9:15 am

    Jack’s back.

  12. kapakahi May 5, 2014 9:16 am

    #5 & #6,

    ST……

Weather delays aren’t the primary cause of the Ching Complex building project. While there were some delays associated with unforeseen field conditions (i.e., discovery of asbestos in underground utilities), most of the delays are attributed to UH-initiated design changes that prompted construction change orders that are still undergoing review & funding approval processing through the UH bureaucracy (for appropriation budget compliance review and approval by UH budget analysts & attorneys……after the consultants and UH engineers have already performed their technical reviews)…..a procedure that is definitely different and more cumbersome (i.e., slower) than most other State and City agencies.

Design changes…..not just for UH-initiated design changes……but also to adjust to unforeseen existing field-conditions…..such as undocumented or incorrectly documented electrical and/or plumbing utilities…..are more likely on an interior renovation project……like the locker room/equipment room renovation…..than on a new building project (like the Ching Complex building project). Also, still gotta deal with the same UH bureaucracy (following the same procedures as the Ching Complex building project) for construction change order approvals……whether for UH-initiated design changes and/or unforeseen field conditions.

  13. Turfwar May 5, 2014 9:22 am

ST I hope they let you take pictures of the finished locker and equipment rooms. It’s probably a project that’s been long over due. The Ching Field project is a joke. There’s probably more than the planning and construction companies involved at fault with adjustments and changes made by the committees but at some point they need to just get it done. The new UH student center is a beautiful facility and I believe a lot of the same people were involved but they still need to finish the Ching project and move on. After seeing the student center in person I can’t wait to see what they will do with Klum Gym when the funding becomes available. And despite the naysayers it will eventually become available.

  14. traitmanz May 5, 2014 9:24 am

We running on Hawaii time so completion will be maybe some time in september

  15. al May 5, 2014 9:30 am

12…and that’s the rest of story.,

  16. NotNasti May 5, 2014 9:35 am

Reverse auction (reserved parking at Aloha Stadium) started at 9:00 a.m. Inner circle lots moving are moving fast.

  17. bpiccolo May 5, 2014 10:15 am

I wish I could pay for my season tickets on the same schedule as construction projects at UH. I’d be able to watch the entire season before paying.

  18. rage777 May 5, 2014 10:16 am

After looking at the depth chart, I hope there are a lot of “tackle eligible” plays with Ben Clarke as the tackle.

  19. marleysdad May 5, 2014 10:29 am

16, inner circle sold 49 out of 800 so far. Hardly what I’d call fast. Price drops $100 tomorrow at noon.

  20. NotNasti May 5, 2014 10:37 am

    19. Tongue in cheek. I don’t understand why anyone would buy on the first day.

  21. SteveM May 5, 2014 11:00 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Tick…tick…tick…
    Jack is Back!

Noise complaints must have silenced the clocks during construction in the lower campus. 😐

  22. Da Punchbowl Kid May 5, 2014 11:02 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 😉

Maybe the blog host can provide us with weekly photo updates of the the locker room work. That way we can all squirm and squeeze okole together.

My question is, what if they don’t get the locker rooms done in time? What then?

  23. marleysdad May 5, 2014 11:22 am

    20, touché. I didn’t see the sarcasm.

  24. NotNasti May 5, 2014 11:30 am

Marleysdad, no problem, I deleted the sentence “I don’t understand why anyone would buy on the first day,” from my original post. Shoulda left it in.

  25. Andrew May 5, 2014 11:31 am

    20.

Same here although if they absolutely must have a certain spot that they’ve had for a while then I could see why they would.

  26. d1shima May 5, 2014 12:41 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

    re: parking reverse auction

    How low can you go?!?!

Mahalo. I was looking for the starting number.
BTW, where did you get the 800 # from?

  28. Turfwar May 5, 2014 12:57 pm

For inner lot the parking permits won’t last long into the third day if there are still any available.

  29. Stephen Tsai May 5, 2014 1:02 pm

    Turfwar:
I can take a picture of the finished rooms.
I probably can take only one session of the under-construction work before there’s a hissy fit. That happened the last time. I took pics of the torn-down locker room and then administrators who “don’t” read the blog told me to stop taking pictures. (I always answer with: What pictures? They always respond with: “I don’t read the blog but somebody told me …”)

  30. Stephen Tsai May 5, 2014 1:05 pm

Somebody once suggested UH should buy all the Aloha Stadium stalls then re-sell them at a higher price. Win-win for everyone. Aloha Stadium gets revenue as if the stalls were sold out; UH finally gets to reap parking money.

  31. marleysdad May 5, 2014 1:19 pm

27, that’s what was available when I signed in this morning.

I have seen inner circle go down to $250 in the past. It gets stressful waiting that long, you could lose out trying to save 50 bux. Not worth it to me, I usually buy the day it gets to $300 or under 200 stalls left.

  32. gobows May 5, 2014 1:30 pm

    30 excellent idea, therefore…never happen

UH construction not that long compared to the H1 (aka H3) and the airport viaduct.

  33. st. anthony trojan May 5, 2014 1:39 pm

Hey # 29…..(locker room and then administrators who “don’t”)….these have names or id badges hanging around their neck…do a ‘Columbo’ ask them…. he/she… for a pen or pencil n take names …

  34. (Jesse)James May 5, 2014 1:40 pm

Good Afternoon Tsaikos…Not only is Jack Back….but so is (Jesse)James…..MWAHAHAHHAHA

  35. 99club May 5, 2014 3:12 pm

re: #3, Damien’s TC Ching project vs UH’s. No contest since Damien has all that free labor on Saturdays. 🙂

  36. Turfwar May 5, 2014 3:12 pm

ST — They read the blog.

  37. tommui May 5, 2014 4:28 pm

#32 – “UH construction not that long compared to the H1 (aka H3) and the airport viaduct.”

No knowledge of the viaduct but H1/H3 was held up for many years (10?) by law suits (envoirmental and cultural).

isn’t it the process that is lame?
admin is the end user or customer in this case.
the state has too many layers.

  60. al May 6, 2014 1:11 am
