The good doctor; monster Masch; Podlewski?

With Dr. Andrew Nichols’ promotion to director of UH student health services, the Warriors are in search of a new team physician. A decision should be reached soon. In the interim, Nichols is overseeing the physical examinations for players on the training-camp roster.

Nichols has been a good match for the Warriors — helpful but not intrusive; with both bedside and sideline manners. His calm demeanor is useful for a player suffering injuries during the chaotic situation of the game. The Warriors’ loss will be the overall gain for Manoa’s entire student body.

* * * * *

Strength coach Tommy Heffernan has declared the offseason conditioning program to be a success and, as a reward, the players will be excused from workouts for the next two days. The rest is much deserved. The Warriors’ first practice is Thursday.

For those keeping track, defensive lineman Zach Masch and offensive lineman Elmer Lim had the top bench-press totals in team testing last week.

Any day now, the volleyball Warriors will announce the hiring of a new assistant coach. Former Warrior Vernon Podlewski is expected to be named.

Last month, Podlewski announced he would not be returning as head coach of the Mid-Pacific Institute girls’ volleyball team. Last week, MPI announced Drew Pascua would be Podlewski’s successor.

maybe not how much weight but how many reps @ 225.

a good stat to see at the end of the season is fewest allowed sacks/qb hurries.

    Good Morning Tsai-kos!

    Couch potato…

“a good stat to see at the end of the season is fewest allowed sacks/qb hurries.”

But what would that say about our ‘improved’ Defense, then?

Once again, thank you so much to Rich2176. What an awesome guy.

  20. Stephen Tsai August 1, 2011 8:59 am

Many of the sacks against UH last year were either coverage sacks or out-of-pocket takedowns. Mo was very good at scrambling last year.

  21. madeinhawaii August 1, 2011 9:05 am

Having a very seasoned Defensive line will help our O-line develop quickly. We may not have the blistering Defensive Ends to test them under the more challenging blitz situations, though. But then, how often will they meet up with teams that have that, this season?

Coach Tuioti appeared on BC’s Show. He told Bobby how Aranda and himself have been attending the Cincinatti Bengals training camp the last four days.

“Aranda has been picking the brains of the defensive coaches, he’s on his second notebook of notetaking,” Tuioti tells Bobby.

Tuioti looks forward to fall camp and is excited to pass on what he’s learned from the Cincinatti Bengals camp to his players.

He also said having a lot of defensive linemen in the mix is a good problem to have.

does college football not follow the same type of jersey numbering convention as the NFL? #’s 7, 9, 20, and 21 sound little bit off for DL-men.

  36. Couch potato August 1, 2011 9:21 am

madeinhawaii, sure you are jesting and know that my post is in reference to the Warriors o-line.

whenever there is a coverage sack then my thoughts are the opponents defense out-foxed the Warriors offense.

  37. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2011 9:22 am

babysitting and warrior football — what more could I ask for? lol

  38. Stretch August 1, 2011 9:23 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

ST – can you help me find air-conditioned seats for the UNLV game too??

  39. Da Punchbowl Kid August 1, 2011 9:24 am

Mash impressed me with his motor last season. A high energy player who’s going to make an impact when he’s in rotation. Some of our two deeps on defense should be called 1, 1a, 1b, etc. We are blessed with quality depth.

Funny, the big question at this time last year was the O-line. Same with this season. I’m thinking they’re going to a pretty good unit. And its nice to see some young guys in that bunch, they will make the transition smoother for who ever takes over at QB when Moniz’ eleigibility is pau.

  40. Da Punchbowl Kid August 1, 2011 9:25 am

    Thanks Tsai.

  46. Stephen Tsai August 1, 2011 9:28 am

Dean Masch impresses me with his organizational skills. He’s hosting a tailgate for the San Jose State game.

  47. madeinhawaii August 1, 2011 9:28 am

    Couch potato,

At this stage of the team’s development, I would expect our Defense to overshadow the Offensive line… it will serve the Offensive unit well in that it is the kind of adversity that they will need to get used to quickly, especially with Colorado and Washington just around the corner. Hopefully by the end of the month, both sides will be on par with each other.

  48. Couch potato August 1, 2011 9:29 am

the experience gained this year will no doubt be invaluable next season as a new qb is brought in the mix and a challenging schedule too.

but i digress, looking forward to this season.

    GO WARRIORS!

  49. Da Punchbowl Kid August 1, 2011 9:29 am

Thanks for the info. Zach sounds like an “elephant” to me. Its also cool that a young guy like Beau Yap is on the two deep. I expect great things from him down the road.

  50. Stretch August 1, 2011 9:29 am

gigi – am I invited to watch the game on your 50 inch tv and in an air conditioned room?

  51. Stephen Tsai August 1, 2011 9:31 am

Actually, if anyone wants to see the totals and records, they’re on the wall in the weight room. You don’t have to enter the weight room; you can stand outside and read them through the glass doors. Heffernan does a good job of motivating guys that way. I think the academic people should follow suit. I’m sure they could post the top GPAs. (It’s OK, as long as the student gives consent, and I’m sure people with high GPAs would give consent.)

  52. madeinhawaii August 1, 2011 9:31 am

I’m looking forward to seeing what Marcus Malepai brings to the table.

  53. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2011 9:31 am

    Stretch, sure, everybody is invited!

  54. Couch potato August 1, 2011 9:32 am

madeinhawaii, oh definitely the Warriors defense is ahead of the offense in the trenches. i just want to see the Warriors o-line dominate the opponents d-line from the first whistle of the season to the last whistle of the season.

  55. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2011 9:33 am

ST, if a student’s gpa is not posted, then people will assume his gpa was low.

  56. Couch potato August 1, 2011 9:34 am

50 inch tv? nowadays, that is small.

  57. Stephen Tsai August 1, 2011 9:34 am

    Gigi:

I think you can post the top 10 GPAs. That shouldn’t be a problem, well, unless No. 8 was something like 2.4.

  58. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2011 9:35 am

ST, what is the lowest acceptable gpa?

  59. Stephen Tsai August 1, 2011 9:35 am

Like I always say, if you can’t afford a big TV, just sit closer to the screen. Perception is everything.

  61. Couch potato August 1, 2011 9:37 am

  64. Couch potato August 1, 2011 9:39 am

2″ difference is a guy thing. 52″ is considered small nowadays.

  65. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2011 9:41 am

CP, well, don’t encourage hubby to buy a 70 incher.

    that would be grotesque.

  66. Stephen Tsai August 1, 2011 9:42 am

    Gigi:

Once admitted into UH, you need to maintain at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA. If you dip below that, you’re put on probation for a semester. If you’re still below, then you’re placed on academic suspension for a semester. The probation period is good because a lot of first-year students struggle the initial semester.

Admissions is different. Counselors can fight to get a person into school but usually not with a 2.0 GPA in high school or previous college. If the problem is a low (but acceptable) SAT score, then the school might make an exception.

The idea is to accept students who have a chance to succeed in college. But there are many exceptions, especially for those with learning disabilities.

  67. mctruck August 1, 2011 9:42 am

good morning Tsaiko’s…..I am getting nervious just waiting4fb….bwaaaahahaha!!

    Gigi/CP

It all depends on what you want to watch.

Sports on the big screen? Good.

That new Rosanne on the farm show? Not so good.

  74. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2011 9:48 am

CP, hubby wants to buy a 3D TV – 70 inches.

    I told him he’s crazy.

  75. Stephen Tsai August 1, 2011 9:51 am

If you want to boost your GPA, take astronomy for a science requirement.

Of course, when I took it, there were nine planets. And, by the way, I think Pluto should find it offensive to be known as a “dwarf” planet. Shouldn’t it be called a “little” planet?

  76. Stephen Tsai August 1, 2011 9:53 am

    Gigi:

Jane Seymour has two different-colored eyes. I thought, gee, now she can see in 3-D. Then I realized: Wait, we all can see in 3-D. lol. Now you know why I was on probation for a year.

  77. warriorsun August 1, 2011 9:53 am

DE is fluid. we have 2-3 transfers, not including zac, that could provide immediate impact if not overtake our starters. competition is always good for the cream to rise…colorado and washington will also provide catalytic dynamics for player seperation.

  78. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2011 9:53 am

    what a demotion!

  85. Last Call August 1, 2011 10:05 am

Those of you who are friends with me on Facebook already saw me post this, but I just wanted those Tsai-kos who are not yet friends with me on FB to know that I reserved our two United Airlines tickets for Sami and me for the 2012 Sugar Bowl. Wanna come see the Superdome . . . and this time we will WIN! We leave on January 1 and return on January 6.

    I’ll drive the limo.

  95. Last Call August 1, 2011 10:38 am

Just bought a 55 ” Samsung HDTV and I love it. Room size and the seating arrangement should be considered when going big screen. In my research somewhere on the internet I had actually found a calculator that recommended the perfect size using room dimensions.

I measured the distance from where my TV would be and where my seating was located then when I went shopping for the TV I stepped off that distance in the show room.

Translation big room go big.Small room don’t over do it.

  96. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2011 10:44 am

Liz, I guess there is room in my home for 12 Tsaikos, including me and hubby.

Only requirements: Bring your own chow and beverage

    and

    keep the bathroom clean.

  97. Garret August 1, 2011 10:49 am

It is interesting to me that Zach Masch could be moved to DE. UH is at least 5-deep at DT and Masch is very productive, so it makes sense to see if he can be used there. If I remember correctly, UH used a 3 DT look at times last season, with a DT playing a DE spot.

Discount tickets (50 yd line) for San Jose St. road game.

I have 50 yard line seats in Section 130; about 20 rows up, behind our Warriors bench, at $25 each; group rate–and I have 16 tickets left. All together we will have 200+ Warrior fans sitting in these 10 rows, from row 12 to 21. You can’t get these kine seats at any other stadium. Watch them perform the haka right in front of us–a definite chicken skin moment! This will be the last game at San Jose on Oct. 14, 6pm–a friday nite game!

    Email me at: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

    GO WARRIORS!

    http://www.sjsuspartans.com/ViewArticle … LID=235120

ps: The UH sections will be in the corner end zone (section 134 and 135) and those were $45.

  99. Garret August 1, 2011 10:51 am

UH could make it to the Sugar Bowl if UH runs the table and if both TCU and BSU lose at least 1 game. Not starting ranked will hurt UH’s chances to get into the top 12 and to get ranked above BSU/TCU. Remember, BSU went undefeated one season and didn’t get into a BCS bowl because the MWC champion was ranked higher.

BSU or TCU will lose the game they play against each other, so the other team has to lose one of their other games (Georgia? SDSU?) to give UH the opening.

  100. Garret August 1, 2011 10:53 am

    Rich,

Thank you again for getting the tickets for the UNLV game. I look forward to being with the Tsaikos again for the game.

  101. Garret August 1, 2011 10:58 am

It is interesting that the MWC is looking to expand to 12 teams to get a conference title game, but BSU is against it. A conference title game would NOT be good for UH…that title game would occur in week 14, which means that UH would have to play 13 games in 13 weeks with *no* bye weeks. That also would mean that the Hawaii Exception would be worthless to MWC teams since they would just play 12 games to keep a bye week.

However, Wilner said he does expect the MWC to expand in the near future. Wilner tossed out San Jose State and Houston as the two most likely candidates to join the league unless the Big 12 blows apart and the MWC is there to pick up the scraps (i.e. Kansas; Kansas State).

Wilner wrote that the MWC thought about expanding to 12 teams earlier this year before Boise State blew up the deal. The conference wanted to add two more teams to create a football conference championship game, which would have brought $5 million annually to the league.

But Boise State didn’t want to “double jeopardy” to reach a BCS bowl game, meaning it would have to go undefeated during the regular season and then win the MWC championship game. Although the Broncos are newcomers to the MWC, they appear to already have a lot of strength in how the conference proceeds forward.

    http://www.rgj.com/section/blogs16

  102. Stephen Tsai August 1, 2011 11:16 am

With UH’s luck, it would have to pay travel subsidies for the teams in the MWC title game.

  106. kruzen August 1, 2011 11:25 am

Also if they expand to 12 teams, UH will pay more travel subsidies if they expand from eight conference games to nine.

Hawaii to the Sugar Bowl? Wow, that would be awesome.

  112. A-House August 1, 2011 11:52 am

    K. Mark:

I have the same feeling! Perhaps this is the reason why I posted that “unsettling feeling” a few days ago.

Mrs A-House and I were discussing revisiting NOLA and why not during the Sugar Bowl? Be great if UH was in it.

Our first stop would be in Vegas to pick up MasaBoy and then on to NOLA – then, back to Vegas and a few days to “rest” and return. Hawaiian for the Hawaii/Vegas round trip and UAL from Vegas to NOLA and back.

In 2008, MasaBoy was unable to take time off from work and we flew non-stop from Hawaii to NOLA and back.

  113. Derek August 1, 2011 12:10 pm

Let’s no get ahead of ourselves. We should only be thinking about the Colorado Tatonkas right now. I’m sure Coach Mack and the Staff are putting their full attention on that first game. One game at the time.

But, if we make it through the season at 13-0 I would rather go to the Rose Bowl.

  114. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2011 12:18 pm

Isn’t the Sugar Bowl easier to get into than the Rose Bowl?

    Garret would know.

  115. Garret August 1, 2011 12:25 pm

UH has apparently made a scholarship offer to a DB from a Kentucky high school. The high school he plays for is nicknamed the Warriors.

Boyd, the coach’s son, already has scholarship offers from Illinois and Hawaii.

    http://blogs.courier-journal.com/khs/2011/08/01/summer-football-tour-western/

  116. Garret August 1, 2011 12:30 pm

    gigi,

It is MUCH easier to get to Pasadena than New Orleans, plus UH has a lot of fans that could easily drive to the Rose Bowl. However, the Rose Bowl took a non-AQ school this year so they are exempt from having to take a non-AQ school for the rest of the current BCS TV contract.

New Orleans is hosting the National Championship game, which means that they get the last choice for at-large teams for the BCS bowls. That means that they will probably get “stuck” with the non-AQ team this year. The BCS bowl games with UH, BSU, and Utah are all among the lowest 10-rated BCS bowl games for TV ratings since the casual fan seems to like watching the “big names” or they have more fans.

FYI: The last time that New Orleans had the national title game was the year that UH played in the Sugar Bowl.

  117. A-House August 1, 2011 12:37 pm

    Way to go Coaches!

no sked’um – let your spirit reach out to all corners of the “lower 48 states” – no forget Alaska and Canada – have not seen a player since #28, WR, what da heck was his name? our pet name for him was gunnie bird – always landed on him stomach after da reception!

i goin get plentay falk from Midori on this one!!

  118. Souljah August 1, 2011 12:42 pm

Must be talking about Jalen Boyd…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCcfdtKaBEM

  119. A-House August 1, 2011 12:42 pm

    Garret #117:

don’t tell that to the NOLA merchants who LOVED the Hawaii fans who spent a ton of $$$ in 2008.

Georgia should have been playing in the title game against Ohio St in 2008 and UH against LSU – maybe different story at game’s end?

Maybe TV was low, but the stadium was full and Hawaii was represented!!!

  120. A-House August 1, 2011 12:57 pm

#118 – it was Dane MacArthur!!

  121. chopsueyboy August 1, 2011 12:58 pm

    gigi

55″ is what you were watching while having your waffle dogs

  122. rage777 August 1, 2011 12:59 pm

Things that are said a lot before the start of the season (any sport):

    The team is deep.

    Everybody is hungry.

I’m in the best shape of my life.

We are really motivated this year.

This team has a lot of chemistry.

Then the season starts, one person gets hurt, people move positions, and all of a sudden team is not that deep anymore. I’m not saying this is UH, but it happens so often I kind of just ignore it.

  123. Couch potato August 1, 2011 1:01 pm

kinda hard for the BCS folks to consider the Warriors given their history in their own bowls the past few years.

it’s all in the rankings. gotta hope the Warriors will do their part and the voters are kind.

  124. Kevin August 1, 2011 1:03 pm

No gambling in Cali as opposed to New Orleans.

Guess some could sneak away and drive to Vegas, but then gotta get back in time for the game.

Either way, Hawaii gets to BCS game again, there should be no problem in getting people from Hawaii to go.

  125. Couch potato August 1, 2011 1:05 pm

kevin, as long as the AD doesn’t give up the ticket allocation. nevermind, the fumbler is gone.

  126. Kevin August 1, 2011 1:06 pm

The merchandise figures for sales of UH merchandise for the Sugar Bowl were phenomenal, I believe official Sugar Bowl items with ONLY Hawaii stuff on it sold more than any other individual team in the history of that bowl game.

IF Hawaii is selected to a BCS game again, this should resonate in the minds of the pickers and choosers.

  127. Couch potato August 1, 2011 1:08 pm

Don Quijote still sells Hawaii vs. Georgia Suger Bowl t-thirts. LOL

  128. d1shima August 1, 2011 1:09 pm

Rest up Warriors…it all starts for real very soon!

  129. d1shima August 1, 2011 1:09 pm

    Let’s beat the Buffs first….

  130. Couch potato August 1, 2011 1:10 pm

    Suger??? SUGAR!

  131. Couch potato August 1, 2011 1:13 pm

    and then?

  132. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2011 1:13 pm

CP, good to see you can spell.

  133. LizKauai (kauaikulolo) August 1, 2011 1:14 pm

Except for the game itself- the SB in NOLA was the best fb experience of my life. I still get choked up when I see the wall of white in the stands and the solidarity and sacrifice the UH fans demonstrated. Some people even risked and lost their lives to see the Warriors play that game. No greater love.

The people of NOLA were so wonderful – aloha spirit to the max even as they suffered the effects of Katrina.

So- yeah- let’s do it again!

    GO WARRIORS!

  134. LizKauai (kauaikulolo) August 1, 2011 1:15 pm

Oh yeah… and Mark Takai… he just shows up and gets ‘er done. No matter what the job is.

  135. d1shima August 1, 2011 1:16 pm

    and then?

    Beat the Huskies

  136. d1shima August 1, 2011 1:19 pm

Yup. Just double-checked…get 13 teams who really couldn’t care less what a great time Hawaii fans had in ‘nola a few years ago.

  137. Wade August 1, 2011 1:27 pm

    Where’s the beef (buffalo)?

  138. Couch potato August 1, 2011 1:27 pm

    and then?

i’m sure Moniz thoughts were Buffs first before any Heisman talk. can always dream of the end results knowing the task at hand. let’s embrace A-House’s vision and Takai’s dreams. they know what it takes.

we dream of big things for our children, but first, pass kindergarten. 😆

  139. A-House August 1, 2011 1:35 pm

    Couch potato #126:

how can one be so stupid to return tickets without any attempt to determine fan interest in that game – opens a lot of wounds for some of us!

my 2nd regret for that game was not being able to stay long enough to sing Hawaii Pono ‘i – our tour guide “kinda forced us” to leave as soon as the game was over – like many thousands of Hawaii fans we would have added our tears; not because we lost, but because we are HAWAII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  140. A-House August 1, 2011 1:38 pm

No doubt Colorado, Washington, Fresno, and Nevada will be tough games to win – however, it will be done!!!

BSU and TCU play a tough pre-conference schedule and could lose 1 or more games – much tougher than UH.

  141. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 1, 2011 1:45 pm

Anyone here planning to take part in next Saturday’s MANOA MAKEOVER? As for the Practice T-Gate – how long is it expected to last?

As for the away games – we’ll be at a local bar somewhere and listening to Bobby Curran do the radio broadcast since the noise is so loud that there’s no way to hear the tv announcers.

  142. Pomai August 1, 2011 1:45 pm

There is an old expression “don’t count your chickens before the eggs hatch”. One game at a time folks…..

  143. Slugger August 1, 2011 1:48 pm

Congratulations all around to the team doctor, the strength coach and the new MVB assistant coach!

  144. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2011 1:51 pm

    Howzit All,

Nice looking 2 deep chart on yesterday’s blog for the warriors. Anyway, Aloha stadium

looks pretty good to me with that green painted on top of the stadium. Can I call it,

“House of the GREEN mean machine with WARRIORS ready to give some pain”.

    Go Warriors!!

  148. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 1, 2011 2:00 pm

    Hawaii vs. LSU

    Brings shivers down my spine…

    But a dream

  149. kawika49 August 1, 2011 2:04 pm

#149 A shiver down your spine

    a twinkle to my sprinkle.

  150. LizKauai (kauaikulolo) August 1, 2011 2:04 pm

Of COURSE we are thinking one game at a time- starting with the buffs.

    It’s part of the pre-game warmup…

We are envisioning a successful season and Bowl game.

One more log to build the Warrior FIRE.

When crunch time comes, it will be One Snap and Clear on every play… march, march, march.

    Mahalo, Ke Akua.

    Mahalo, Coaches.

    Mahalo, ST

    Mahalo, WARRIORS!

  151. Stephen Tsai August 1, 2011 2:16 pm

Just spoke with Zach Masch. He’ll be used as an end against big running teams like Colorado, but will be in the tackle rotation the rest of the time. UH is going to rotate a lot on defense this year.

  152. Couch potato August 1, 2011 2:16 pm

Pomai, especially if they are duck eggs.

Takai and A-House realize what it takes to get to the BCS. nothing wrong with hopes, wishes, and dreams.

c’mon, before the Wahine softball season started expectations were high. i didn’t notice anyone waiting for the eggs to hatch.

  153. Pride. August 1, 2011 2:16 pm

Find it interesting that among the least penalized teams last year, Navy ranked #4, Army #7, and the Air Force #7.

Hawaii was #81. At least we weren’t #120. We’re catching up to the Academies.

  154. Stephen Tsai August 1, 2011 2:17 pm

UH did the same thing last year when Vaughn played some d-end against physical teams.

  155. Da Punchbowl Kid August 1, 2011 2:21 pm

    Check ur email Mr. Tsai

  156. Couch potato August 1, 2011 2:26 pm

Pomai, also when others posted about the game in Nevada would be for the WAC championship, i don’t remember reading too much about one game at a time.

no matter what the future holds, GO WARRIORS!

  157. madeinhawaii August 1, 2011 2:26 pm

To Hawaii’s advantage, the last three games they play are at home.. that’ll give the boys some respite from on the road and an opportunity to catch up on school work before a bowl game.

  158. madeinhawaii August 1, 2011 2:26 pm

And this year.. we better not only get to a bowl.. we better win our bowl game…

  159. Kevin August 1, 2011 2:30 pm

The future holds a pending shifting of the North and South poles.

The beginning of an eventual climate shift as recorded in the earth’s history.

I said it before, time for REAL change cannot come soon enough. 😆 😆 😆 😆

Either that or we get caught in a major solor event that knocks out power on earth and we all start eating each other… a cosmic “cleansing” if you will.

Again, change cannot come soon enough. 😆

  160. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 1, 2011 2:32 pm

    Made,

Best thing I read all day. Thank you.

If I only had two choices:

    1) Repeat of a 10+ win season and a WAC title, but another bowl loss.

    2) 7-6 season with a bowl win.

    Well, I’m taking #2.

  162. Kevin August 1, 2011 2:33 pm

  165. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 1, 2011 2:42 pm

I would also take a bowl win over a WAC conference championship again, especially this year. The bowl game no matter how low the TV ratings may be will still be watched nationally. I am hoping this is the season our nationally televised game curse gets sorta out cuz its getting old.

Bobby Curran mentioned that some Fresno fans feel that winning the WAC this year wouldn’t really be winning the WAC because BSU is gone. Tough fans out in bulldog country!

  166. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 1, 2011 2:43 pm

    #166 sorta=sorted good grief.

  167. chopsueyboy August 1, 2011 2:44 pm

The new UH Channel will be called UH12. It’s on 12 in SD and on 1012 in HD.

It’s in a test run now on Oceanic with a blank screen.

  168. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 1, 2011 2:45 pm

looked at some of the Hawaii Bowl 2010 pictures. It seems that both teams visited children’s hospitals to pass out bears and sports gear etc. very awesome.

  169. madeinhawaii August 1, 2011 2:46 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme:

Well Fresno fans shouldn’t fret about it. They’re not gonna end up 1st in the WAC anyway.

  170. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 1, 2011 2:50 pm

    #170,

It was a jab towards Pat Hill from what I recollect. The guy can beat up on BCS schools better than UH or BSU but for whatever reason forget how to play football once in-conference games start.

  171. Kevin August 1, 2011 2:54 pm

    IWWTHM,

Go check out what Fresno State fans write on their scout message board when they lose.

You’ll see A LOT of similarities between the worst Hawaii fans and the worst Fresno State fans.

A lot of their beef though is centered around wanting new blood in the football and softball coaching staffs.

  172. papajoe2 August 1, 2011 3:04 pm

FYI, Ravens’ Chris Carr is back so Mana is now #26. Had to give CC his jersey # back.

  175. A-joe August 1, 2011 3:16 pm

166-IWWTHM That’ll be an even tougher pill to swallow for the FSU fans when they don’t win the WAC this year.

    Maybe, some hapi coats.

    Re-Tomey

It will be interesting to see if the special team’s coach is on the field or up in the booth.

The reason I mention this is that I remember last year as Tomey was doing the color commentary for the WAC football broadcasts…he’s quicker than a whistle. Tomey imparts information to the viewers in the form of sniffing out plays, telling the viewers what adjustments either team should make and having a databank of stored information of players, coaches and team’s tendencies. He does this with speed and precision, which probably left a lot of viewers in awe (like me).

Listening to Tomey do color was impressive. It was like the viewers were listening in as Tomey was on a headset up in the booth talking to one of the coaches down on the field.

Can Tomey come to the rescue of the Warriors and kill two birds with one stone? I’m hoping so.

    Special teams play needs help.

And so does the teams inability to make up-to-the-minute adjustments (or even half time adjustments) needs help.

I say if Tomey is up in the booth I see one stone and a lot of feathers.

  188. A-joe August 1, 2011 3:50 pm

“one stone and a lot of feathers”

    I like that. =)

  189. Derek August 1, 2011 3:52 pm

The season ender against BYU at Aloha Stadium just might be the biggest game in UH history. Just like old times, UH vs BYU is the biggie. Let’s see how it all folds. It might be a very interesting season.

  190. SteveM August 1, 2011 3:56 pm

A legal-sized sign of the Tsai-ko logo is available for download at my Tsai-ko site. Click on my name above. The pdf. download link is right below the countdown clock. (Been there for 3+ years with the permission of the owner).

Also regarding the question about the kanji for Tsai-ko. Rasu Begasu provided his interpretation. It is posted at the top right-hand corner of the page.

Thanks Steve…will do the hakimachi, for us only, no charge….

  192. Shoko August 1, 2011 4:04 pm

Perhaps the Warriors would willing to wear the hachimaki with the Tsaiko logo while they their games this season? Just a thought….

  193. Kevin August 1, 2011 4:04 pm

    Kawika,

Yup, but Stretch already gave you his email.

It will take you to THE SOURCE.

The excitement and suspense builds anew.

  198. Kevin August 1, 2011 4:15 pm

    Ralph,

Go cross-check that soccer game against your Wahine vball season tickets.

If it doesnt conflict I’ll go to soccer. Daughter of a long time friend of my dad plays on the team, but the season is long and if there is Wahine vball that night, I’ve been dying to see the new scoreboard in action.

  199. wafan August 1, 2011 4:15 pm

    So close.

  200. wafan August 1, 2011 4:16 pm

    3rd century!

  201. Kevin August 1, 2011 4:17 pm

Lots of talent coming into the Wahine this season. The bandwagon for Jane Croson is currently being painted and seats are available.

But that is a given for Shoji’s team every season, lots to look forward to.

The scoreboard has been A LONG TIME COMING!!! 😆 😆

  202. chopsueyboy August 1, 2011 4:19 pm

Also a new interactive UH Channel will be added on Oceanic Channel 13. (1013 HD)

  203. Kevin August 1, 2011 4:23 pm

    How interactive?

Will the slobs at home snearing and jeering be able to tap into the coaches booth to give their expert opinion based on their pop-warner coaching experiences? 😆 😆 😆 😆

Never underestimate the power of HINDSIGHT and the added comfort of “saying so” after the play commenced. 😆 😆 😆 😆

  204. d1shima August 1, 2011 4:32 pm

Big time MAHALO! to Rich2176 and Rasu Begasu for all that they do in advance of these UNLV Tsaiko Expeditions

  205. d1shima August 1, 2011 4:35 pm

    Couch Potato,

Prolly was kinda grumpy before Lunchauwah so ‘scuse for sounding like the “parade rainer” but some team members and coaches do follow the talk on the blogs so maybe mine was just an effort to keep the postseason talk to a really quiet murmur here in the nascent moments of the preseason.

  206. clowns nose August 1, 2011 4:37 pm

    #188 cont.

Tomey is a surgeon he doesn’t need to do secretarial type work. Put that responsibility in the hands of a GA. A GA can adequately count and assign which players go where on special teams. Tomey value (imo) would better suited for the team if he’s up in the booth.

  207. Ralph August 1, 2011 4:45 pm

Only the Sept 30, Oct 2 and 16 soccer games don’t conflict with Na Wahine Volleyball. Hopefully the other games are on oc 16 to dvr, otherwise, it’s wvb since I paid for my season tickets.

    Ralph–

Home…Are you going to practice this Thursday?

  216. Ralph August 1, 2011 6:32 pm

BG808 no, I’m not into watching practices.

  217. Ralph August 1, 2011 6:39 pm

10 days to go, Oakland vs Arizona. A few restricted and unrestricted free agents unsigned, and a few more being pursued.

  218. Ralph August 1, 2011 6:45 pm

WVB season opener, Aug 26, at the Stanley, the San Francisco Dons are our tournament foe for the evening.

The Los Al girls, Hartong and Croson, will be playing their first D1 match together, the Stanley should be rocking.

  219. myki August 1, 2011 7:11 pm

    BG808,

Hope to see you there on Thursday!

  220. bugaz August 1, 2011 7:33 pm

When do they strap it up and start hitting? That’s when I want to go!

  221. BleedGreen808 August 1, 2011 7:57 pm

    myki–

Will see you and sjmarco there. These are exciting times. FOOTBALL right around the corner.

  222. BleedGreen808 August 1, 2011 8:24 pm

Read somewhere that Jim Donovan is trying to get BYU to do their haka when we play them this year. That would be something to watch. Maybe this is a way of getting fans to get their okoles in the stadium sooner.

Both teams doing their haka at mid-field.

  223. al August 1, 2011 8:41 pm

bleeder…that would be quite entertaining wouldn’t it?

just before the game prior to the coin toss.

visitor goes first amidst the boos.

warriors go next led by the seniors to the roar of this sold out stadium.

warriors believe that they have to protect this house fo’ real.

    final score 59-28.

    de javu…all over again.

    chicken skin.

  224. BleedGreen808 August 1, 2011 8:47 pm

    al–

I should’ve thought about this during the get together with Coach Mack.

This could be a new tradition for the younger fans.

We got to push JD to get BYU to do it. Garants, it will be all over ESPN and will go viral on the internet and in turn will help out with recruiting due to exposure.

    LET’S DO IT!!!

  225. BleedGreen808 August 1, 2011 8:50 pm

Or the get together with JD. ST mentioned JD is willing to talk tsaikos and there’s no set date yet. Yes, yes, this would be a great question to JD.

  226. BleedGreen808 August 1, 2011 8:52 pm

    Found it…

    BigWave96744 wrote:

Aloha Jim, with UH and BYU scheduled to play each other in football for years to come, would you consider starting a tradition of both teams doing the haka at mid field, like they do in international rugby games?

BYU has lots of polynesian players and has done the haka for years. I think it would be a great new traditions for both schools… the national tv audience would love it. Maybe something to shoot at, next time you chat with the BYU AD

    ——————————————————–

    BigWave96744 –

This is something we could take a look at. In general, the haka is specific to each team, so I’m not sure that a joint haka is do-able, but this is something I can discuss with the administration of BYU.

  227. al August 1, 2011 8:53 pm

bleeding brother…okay, you in charge of telling jd.

and the winner of the game (us of course) gets to do an encore after the game.

  228. al August 1, 2011 8:53 pm

it would be great if we could play byu every year for the last game.

    whoootaaahh.

  229. al August 1, 2011 9:07 pm

poor tate forcier…the shibai didn’t last too long. he can’t get in anywhere of note.

  230. al August 1, 2011 9:09 pm

more than worrying about the oline…a deep concern should be how soon will the receivers mesh with moniz?

  231. five fingers men shoes sale August 1, 2011 9:09 pm

I thought for a minute thanks for writing to say take it. This focus is usually on my mind these days, so really enjoyed this blog!

  232. BleedGreen808 August 1, 2011 9:10 pm

    al–

I’ll ask JD but you have to join the team for the post game haka. lol

  233. al August 1, 2011 9:11 pm

what i do like about the oline is that there appears to be a lot of “samson satele-like” young guys; makaniai-winchester, shigematsu, lefotu, levay, loeffler…all of whom project to start the season next year in 2012.

  234. al August 1, 2011 9:12 pm

bleeder…okay, should i remove my shirt?

  235. clowns nose August 1, 2011 9:13 pm

The selection of the team physician is in whose hands?

    Coach Mack, AD, UH?

  236. BleedGreen808 August 1, 2011 9:14 pm

    al–

There are no receivers or QB if the OL can’t protect.

  237. BleedGreen808 August 1, 2011 9:16 pm

I like the tentative OL at this point except the LT. Was hoping A. Hansen would be back by now.

If I took my shirt off, no one would be left to watch the haka. Bombay I scare all the chicks. lol

  243. al August 1, 2011 9:29 pm

bg808…the oline will settle in quicker than the receiving corps is my guess.

  244. al August 1, 2011 9:30 pm

the offense may have to run more methodical until everyone is on the same page.

but, i trust in rolo that he will have firing on all cylinders.

    So…

When all is said and done, the Warrior Beat is a very special gathering place.

It is where fans and coaches and players and families and, yes, trolls gather – each to support Warrior Football in our own personal ways.

Among sports blogs, it is a bit of a haven where reliable information and intelligent discussion outweighs vitriolic rhetoric which has become the norm in other places.

But why should it be otherwise?

Love and unity can be felt here.

I have a “Ask the Blog” type question…

Question: Does anyone know Shirley Ige (maiden name) of McKinley High 1967?

Some of my high school classmates are trying to assemble members of our class who worked on the school’s daily newsletter. ASAP. I was one of them and they found me. 🙄

If you know Shirley, ask her to contact me at: stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com OR James Shiu (reunion committee).

  267. papajoe2 August 2, 2011 6:04 am

Googled Case Keenum, the guy that is chasing Tim Chang’s career yardage record. I was hoping that he would overtake Timmy’s career record for interceptions but, too bad for Timmy, because he has only 41 career ints.
