The day after: Warriors ranked No. 25

Spend a mere 13 hours in airports and airplanes, you realize the world keeps spinning. The Warriors are ranked 25th in the Associated Press top-25 poll. That’s significant considering that media across the country now have to stay up to follow Saturday’s regular-season finale against UNLV.

UH fans should send thanks to “Ferd” Lewis, who voted for the Warriors.

LAS CRUCES — It was interesting to see the emotion when coaches and teammates spoke of running back Alex Green’s 327 rushing yards. Green has been such a selfless player — blocking, never griping — that everyone was really happy for his success.

The Warriors were waiting for their fans to gather before doing a pre-game haka. But then they noticed that the Aggies were honoring their seniors. So, they postponed the haka until after the game.

After doing the haka, the players formed a line and thanked the fans who showed up. As Bryant Moniz said: “If there are 10 people or 100,000, we appreciate each one of them.”

pride of the islands…defensive front four.

these local boys in the trenches along with zach masch have made defense fun to watch again.

i hope that we continue the legacy by getting several of them this year from the local high schools because there are many who can play well.

Cool Ethan ~ The fans yesterday that did come to cheer on their Aggies should be congratulated for being so loyal. One cannot feel anything but pity for a struggling fb program.

We are truly blessed to have a team to be proud of. Our guys have made us realize how much adversity they have overcome to find a winning way.

With Senior night upcoming, I would like to see us all make an effort to invite all our ohana and friends to come show support on Saturday. Let’s give this years crop of Seniors a real hearty send off!

  32. Garret November 28, 2010 5:10 am

Congratulations to the WAC Champs! Due to all of the conference turmoil and budget situation, this was the best possibly timed season for UH to beat all the predictions.

  34. Garret November 28, 2010 5:17 am

    99club,

The 13th team that UH has scheduled next season is a home game vs. BYU. There is no team on that schedule that UH cannot beat. I really would like for UH to get an undisputed WAC title next year, in the final year before the WAC loses all of its strength. Benson is talking about how the WAC may operate with 7 football teams and no longer be recognized as a D-IA conference…so, next year could be the final WAC title and BSU won’t be in the conference.

  35. Garret November 28, 2010 5:20 am

I’m happy that UH has the WAC Championship this year, but it is too bad that UH will lose all of that money that BSU would have been leaving behind. That $625k would be nice, especially with UH paying Mack the $50k in bonuses.

Mack deserves those bonuses, especially since his 7% paycut doesn’t end until after the season.

  36. Pride. November 28, 2010 5:30 am

#33 – Thanks for the clarification Garret.

  37. Garret November 28, 2010 5:31 am

If TCU goes to the Big East, Nevada beating BSU will be a significant negative in the MWC’s chance for AQ status. My Dad was cheering hard for Nevada, but I was torn when watching the game (I never want to cheer for Nevada, I wanted the chaos that would have happened in the BCS if BSU and TCU stayed undefeated, I wanted UH to get the championship, I wanted UH to get the BCS money, etc.).

    The positives for AQ status:

    1. Nevada will end up in the top 25, giving the MWC another school with points in that category. This won’t count for the 2012 AQ status evaluation, though.

    The negatives for AQ status:

    1. One criteria for AQ status is the rank of the highest ranked team in the conference. If TCU leaves, the MWC will be hurt badly by BSU’s loss. The MWC needs to rank highly in this criteria for their AQ status appeal.

    2. BSU will probably fall further than Nevada will rise, so it is a net loss for the average team ranking criteria.

If BSU could have gotten into the national title game and won it, I honestly thought that there would have been no way for the MWC to miss AQ status.

AQ status means even more now because ESPN outbid Fox for the TV contract for BCS bowls and the BCS does *not* keep any of that money…so, all $42.5 million of that additional TV money has to be given to increase the BCS bowl payout. Each team going to a BCS bowl will earn $4 million or so more now.

  38. Garret November 28, 2010 5:32 am

    pride,

The funny thing is that *Sagarin* himself thinks that the rating that you posted is better than the one that the BCS uses. The big difference is that the BCS does not allow him to factor in the score differential–so, the BCS computer rankings have to weight a 1-point win the same as a 70-point win.

  39. Stretch November 28, 2010 5:34 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Great win yesterday. Congratulations to the WAC Champs!!

I feel sorry for the NMSU Seniors. Even when UH was struggling through the VonAppen years, I think that we would still have more fans than those who came out yesterday. I hope that people come out this coming Saturday against UNLV to honor the UH Seniors, they deserve it.

  40. Garret November 28, 2010 5:35 am

I remember reading earlier this week that NMSU openly talked about their doubts that they can financially afford to continue playing D-IA football. NMSU’s Athletic Department gets $4 million a year from their state government, but their state is going through a budget crisis and the Athletic Department may lose that money plus their school’s overall money from the state will probably decrease.

I would be *very* surprised if NMSU is still playing D-IA football in 5 years. I would guess that NMSU would announce that they are dropping out of D-IA around 2012 when the WAC loses its top teams and the TV contract goes away.

  41. Garret November 28, 2010 5:37 am

For those who are comparing UH’s loss of PPV money by joining the MWC with what UH has now…UH’s PPV money, attendance, and recruiting were all going to get killed if UH tried to stay in the WAC. The WAC itself won’t exist much longer for football if schools like NMSU cannot afford to play.

  42. Garret November 28, 2010 5:39 am

UH showed great restraint and class by not doing the pre-game haka while NMSU was honoring their seniors before the game.

The Warriors should also be praised for going up to the fans after the game.

  43. Pride. November 28, 2010 5:40 am

#40 – Have they been meeting the game attendance criteria?

  44. Garret November 28, 2010 5:41 am

It was great to have Momo and Mrs. Momo visit us this past week. My wife and I love spending time with them and my kids treasure every moment they have with their grandparents.

  45. Pride. November 28, 2010 5:42 am

Was there really 11,841 fans in attendance at yesterday’s game?

  46. Garret November 28, 2010 5:43 am

    Pride.,

#43–If the NCAA tried to enforce the game attendance criteria, I think 2 WAC schools would be dropped out of D-IA. It seems that the NCAA won’t care about that…but, if a school doesn’t get enough fans to their games, they cannot afford to keep having a football team.

  47. Stretch November 28, 2010 5:44 am

If NMSU drops out of D1A in a few years, I would feel sorry for Manley and other Hawaii players on the team. I thought Manley looked pretty good yesterday, especially for a true freshman quarterback.

  48. Garret November 28, 2010 5:45 am

    Pride.,

NMSU, SJSU, and others report tickets sold instead of turnstile. The funny thing is that Nevada reports turnstile but they have entrances where fans aren’t counted as they enter the stadium. If Nevada counted tickets sold like NMSU, their attendance numbers would look much more respectable.

  49. Stretch November 28, 2010 5:45 am

Pride – 11,841 attendance or tickets issued??

  50. Garret November 28, 2010 5:50 am

I agree with Stretch that NMSU dropping out of D-IA would be sad for their younger players. However, there have been rumbles out of NMSU for years that they could not afford a football team for much longer…and this was way before BSU was invited to leave the WAC.

I’ve kind of been hinting at this when I’ve been posting things like how NMSU had to ask their fans to bring snacks and juice boxes so their team could eat after practice since they couldn’t afford a training table. And then they cut $3 million MORE from their Athletic Budget! And now they could lose $4 million from their Athletic Budget that comes from their state and their University could be forced to reduce their subsidy for Athletics since their budget is being cut by their state.

NMSU was operating with basically the minimum possible budget anyway…asking fans to bring juice boxes to practice? Try cutting $7+ million away from the barebones budget…if all their coaches and staff worked for free they still could not afford their athletic department with cuts that big due to the costs of scholarships and travel.

  51. Pride. November 28, 2010 5:55 am

If NMSU’s season were to end after the 2011 season, some program will score a real good QB in Manley.

  52. Pride. November 28, 2010 5:56 am

So I guess UNM is having the same problems?

…Big Upside Improvement with the Wahine BB team this year…

a few factors: Coach D, Keisha looking to be more aggressive on the offensive end, Arbuckle has gotten physically stronger, and freshman Kamilah Jackson (another double double last night) is contributing BIG TIME (this girl has No Fear).

we’ve already beaten a Pac 10 and SEC team this year…sweet.

  71. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2010 7:01 am

I thought Manley was really classy.

When the game is over, it’s just Hawaii kids getting together.

  72. LizKauai -iPad November 28, 2010 7:11 am

Your pic of Manley says it all, ST!

    Thanks for the great coverage!

Whassup with the message numbering? Deleting spam?

    Have a great day, everyone.

    HTTR!

  73. CoolEthan November 28, 2010 7:12 am

Wonder if Manely has second thoughts about attending NMSU? Could his progression over the next several years be held back if the program doesn’t advance to new heights?

I’m still confused over the coaching staff not utulizing a sort of 2 minute drill with that 1 minute left before half. They just sat there like the game was already over. Even the announcers were befuddled.

  74. Garret November 28, 2010 7:23 am

    2008-2009 Athletic Department Revenue:

    New Mexico: $38,376,372.00

    New Mexico State: $26,896,469.00

NMSU is going to be hit much, much harder by the budget cuts than New Mexico…because NMSU basically doesn’t have much more to cut.

NMSU’s Atheletic department gets about $11 million from their Upper Campus and $3.3 million from their state. They got just $1,666,634.00 from ticket sales!

New Mexico got $6,814,874.00 from ticket sales and far more than NMSU from donations from boosters.

To put things in perspective, UH got $7.2 million from ticket sales and NMSU got $1.7 million from ticket sales. UH gets a huge PPV deal and NMSU gets basically nothing for their TV rights.

New Mexico’s Athletic Budget looks to be higher than UH, and a lot of UH’s spending is for travel costs.

  75. Garret November 28, 2010 7:23 am

If NMSU has to drop football, their players can transfer to any team and play immediately. Instead of sitting on the bench for years, players like Manley can play as freshman and then transfer…

  76. madeinhawaii November 28, 2010 7:27 am

Been a long time since I’ve enjoyed a Warrior game of running. Those long runs get you so fired up. On deep passes you hold your breath and explode when the caught is made.. sigh when it’s dropped. On long runs, your adrenaline keeps flowing and churning with every step of the way. It’s an adrenaline rush. Especially when it happens over and over again.. Whew! Thoroughly enjoyable game.

Rainbow Wahine’s hung in tough, too. From a ten point lead to a deficit.. then to go neck and neck through double overtime. Wow.. nitty gritty.. not so pretty… hung in tough just enough to win the game and claim the fame.

Stayed up late to catch the replay of the football game, too.

  77. gigi-hawaii November 28, 2010 7:27 am

    Hi ST and Tsaikos!

Thanks for the great pics! Hey, Manley towers over Moniz.

Well, UNLV is 2-10. Think we have a good chance of winning?

It would be wonderful if we could get in the habit of winning — I don’t think I would ever be blase about it. Each win would be thrilling.

    GO WARRIORS!

  78. Pomai November 28, 2010 7:28 am

Manley looked pretty good for a freshmen QB without any outstanding WR/slots around him. I think he made the right choice in that he is playing in his freshmen year and had he went to UH that wouldn’t have happened. Also if they do away with football I am sure he will hook up with a good team and more than likely start

  79. madeinhawaii November 28, 2010 7:28 am

Last night was what you could call a balanced attack.

  80. mctruck November 28, 2010 7:41 am

  81. madeinhawaii November 28, 2010 7:44 am

Next time we get an impact player named “Green,” we got to get another one named “White.”

  82. mctruck November 28, 2010 7:44 am

Manley should do an ala-Moniz move and go back to Hawaii, sit out a year and try out for qb thereafter. I wouldn’t waste another year at NMSU.

    Good morning, Tsaikos!

    Happy birthday to Tannya Joaquin!

So happy for the team on achieving that goal: WAC Champions! The game yesterday was really the Run ‘n Shoot.

  90. Committed Road Warrior November 28, 2010 8:11 am

Judging from the gap in points between Hawai’i and Northern Illinois in the AP Top 25, it looks like we cracked the Top 25 mainly because there was nobody else to put there based on the results from yesterday’s games and who (mostly) lost their games.

But I’m not complaining about being in the Top 25.

  91. madeinhawaii November 28, 2010 8:11 am

I’m glad the team went over to acknowledge the fans after the game. Hope they keep that up for their away games next year.

ST ~ Thanks for the pictures. Always nice to see what’s up with everyone.

  94. mctruck November 28, 2010 8:17 am

Xmas wish list: win last game vs. UNLV; win Hawaii Bowl vs. team-USA; invite to BWC; invite to MWC-football only; top25 in final poll(s). azall I’m asking, not much…just sayin.

  95. madeinhawaii November 28, 2010 8:17 am

Wow.. three WAC teams in the AP top 25 !!

Too bad, it’s aloha oe to the WAC, though… just when things were looking good…

  96. CoolEthan November 28, 2010 8:28 am

MIH – I betcha all three teams win their bowl too!

  97. Hank November 28, 2010 8:29 am

curveball…it’s OK brahdah…you was on it first.

  98. Michigan Warrior November 28, 2010 8:30 am

That is just awesome to see our Warriors line up after the game to recognize and interact with the fans!!!

I’ve noticed lots of things can be brought into different stadiums around the WAC. Guess we’re the only ones with such stringent, prohibitive , restrictive rules. Whereas fans from other teams in and out of the WAC are actually allowed to be fans in a more supportive, creative, traditional role. We often see fans pour onto fields around the country in a somewhat orderly manner. Do that at Aloha Stadium, and get arrested instantly.

Anyways, gratz to our Warriors again! Last regular season game coming up for our Seniors!

  99. Kazz via DROID.X November 28, 2010 8:31 am

    Hank,

We were sitting behind the Wahine bench and there were two sets of coaching going on.

Coach Dana was keeping her team loose and drawing up plays while Kanekoa was intense and keeping her teammates in check.

It was amazing to witness Coach Dana’s style up close in a pressure situation.

My friend that was with me last night still coaches youth league bball and pointed out how Coach Dana is a good tea hing coach. She talks to the players. Her approach paid off. The last timeout we took, you could not tell that we were behind and trying to catch up. Then Kanekoa nailed that crucial 3 and all momentum was lost.

When the first OT started, Coach Dana gathered her players and said “ok girls, lets finish this game because my feet hurt”. The bench laughed. The result? We were down by a basket again with 30 seconds left and we never panicked. Kanekoa again with the crucial free-throws to send it into a second OT…

Then Ole Miss’ cranky disposition took over as we ran away with the game in the second OT.

It seems like Coach Dana’s philosophy is that if you are going to lose a game, no sense in losing your confidence in the process because that is more damaging. Because of that, had we lost last night, Coach Dana kept coaching up her players all night to where I beleive they’d be able to put a loss easily behind them.

Don’t forget to vote for Alex Green for Capitol One Impact Performance of the Week if you haven’t done so already.

  101. We had to cancel the second day of the Green Gifting Sale because of the uncertainty of the weather plus the ground where we set up is too squishy/muddy.

Although it rained heavily throughout the night, it’s sunny right now. However, there are still heavy clouds sitting over the mountains.

We can still take phone orders so click on my name above to get the phone number from the website.

We’ve changed the message on the voicmail; however, I won’t be able to change the website information until later on today.

FROM VERY LATE IN YESTERDAY’S BLOG –

I forgot to let folks here know that if you want to make sure that the travel expenses are a line item in the Operating Budget for the upcoming fiscal year, I will post information on how to be an effective Citizen Advocate.

However, until the State House gets organized, nothing much can be accomplished because the House starts the budget decision-making. Until the chairs of the Finance and Higher Education Committees are named, there’s not much that can be done.

Stay turned for more details – and yes, politics & sports do make a difference. As for my read on Congress taking on the BCS system, it ain’t gonna happen as long as the Tea Party and the rest of the GOP maintain their control. They do NOT want government interferemce in the private sector.

  102. Kazz via DROID.X November 28, 2010 8:33 am

*teaching* not tea hing. Dont know what “tea hing” is… Maybe Gigi can tell us.

#99@Kazz…Mahalo for the courtside scouting…as you know, the mental game is soooo important…and if players believe that the coach believes in them…it can make all the difference.

    Kudos to Coach Dana.

  104. Shoko November 28, 2010 8:37 am

    Curveball #88,

No worries braddah. If it wasn’t for your post, I wouldn’t have checked the ESPN website regarding the recent rankings. Much mahalo!

It looks like Nevada is being projected to the Humanitarian Bowl against Ohio and Boise State in the Kraft Bowl against Ohio. Tulsa is projected to play Hawaii Bowl. I have to agree that perhaps, the WAC will win all of its bowl games.

  105. Shoko November 28, 2010 8:38 am

Doh, I meant the Kraft Bowl will be Boise State and Georgia Tech. Better take a break…

C USA vb in the same boat with the WAC, no respect from the NCAA. SMU for the first time in its vb history played for the conference championship and loss to Tulsa finishing 24-6. They weren’t invited. A look at the bracket there are several teams from the ACC, SEC and Big Ten with nearly double digit losses and they are in the round of 64.

BSU will probably fall further than Nevada will rise, so it is a net loss for the average team ranking criteria.

Looking at the Coaches’ Poll, BSU went from #3 to #10 while Nevada went from #19 to #17. Definitely a net loss for AQ qualification.

  142. Garret November 28, 2010 11:42 am

I finished gathering the quotes from the game:

  143. Ralph November 28, 2010 11:45 am

Oakland needs to bring back its defense of old, especially in the line and backfield. Guys like Tatum, Atkinson and Brown roaming the backfield. The D line needs to be nasty and physical and its not.

  144. Garret November 28, 2010 11:48 am

Remember that article a couple of weeks ago that said that C-USA might send its champion to the Hawaii Bowl because they would lose the Liberty Bowl if the SEC didn’t have enough bowl-eligible teams? Both SEC teams that needed to win yesterday to become bowl-eligible won, so the Liberty Bowl will be SEC vs. C-USA champion. So, the Hawaii Bowl won’t get the C-USA champion…if either game had gone the other way yesterday, the Hawaii Bowl might have had a higher pick of opponent.

According the the Atlanta paper, Georgia will be playing in the Liberty Bowl. They will play the C-USA champion.

I’ve also just read that Army will play in the Armed Forces Bowl that is being held at SMU’s stadium this year.

So, if SMU wins at Central Florida on Saturday then they will face *Georgia*…and we’ll hear about the Sugar Bowl matchup over and over. If SMU loses, they will most likely face Army.

Last I saw, 9-3 Tulsa was projected for the Hawaii Bowl. At least they are better than a team like 6-6 UTEP–last week I read a report out of El Paso that said that UTEP was likely in the Hawaii Bowl.

  145. Garret November 28, 2010 11:54 am

UH is #27 in the coaches poll and Central Florida is #25. If SMU wins on Saturday, UH would move up 1 spot–the other teams right in front of UH are done playing for the regular season.

It is nice for UH to be #25 in the AP, but that poll doesn’t count for BCS AQ status. The Coaches and the Harris Poll (UH is #28 in the Harris Poll) are the ones that count, and the computers don’t give UH much of a boost due to the SOS of the bottom feeders of the WAC (plus UNLV is near the bottom of their conference, Colorado is near the bottom of their conference, Army is the lowest-rated indy, and Charleston Southern is tied for last in their D-IAA conference).

  146. HawaiiMongoose November 28, 2010 11:55 am

Tulsa would be a worthy opponent for UH in the Hawaii Bowl.

  147. Ralph November 28, 2010 11:59 am

woot woot, Raider TD, finally. Oakland up 14-10 after several TO.

  148. Garret November 28, 2010 11:59 am

UH is a 30-point favorite vs. UNLV.

BSU is a 43-point favorite over Utah State and I’m sure they will take out their frustration on Utah State.

Nevada is a 14-point favorite over La Tech. For the MWC to get AQ status, they need Nevada to finish in the top 25…so, I guess I’ll refrain from cheering against Nevada next week.

West Virginia is favored over Rutgers, but if Rutgers pulls off the upset then UH would move up in every poll.

  152. Ralph November 28, 2010 12:21 pm

Raiders up 14-13 at the half, I guess that is better than having the announcers dissecting Oakland’s failures and prognosticating another inevitable loss.

  153. Ralph November 28, 2010 12:27 pm

Na Wahine faces North Carolina for the championship today at 6 p.m., come on the down to the SSC.

Carolina has two players in the 6’5 to 6’6 range at center or power forward.

UH’s Arbuckle is 6’1 so she will need to muscle up and block out to get a rebound. Jackson is 5’11.

  154. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 28, 2010 12:27 pm

    #117,

For next season it’ll come down to our victories over UNLV/Hawaii Bowl but more importantly how coaches and media view our team overall in its competitiveness.

For instance Boise has like all of 2-3 guys who are seniors so they will be loaded.

Hawaii loses Salas and Pilares but we still have Moniz. We need to start getting the projected starters for next year some REAL playing time with real intentions to run routes and score points, not just dump doodoo in the field and try to run out the clock (btw I HATE when the coaches put in reserves only to run the clock out). We have UNLV for this if we can blow them out by the first half.

If we win out and take the Hawaii Bowl I can’t imagine not being ranked in the 25-30 or even higher.

    #117 – Pomai

As much as we would like to hope, UH won’t get that kind of respect, especially with our recieving corps being overhauled with the loss of Salas, Pilares, Bradley, etc. Also, as Garret pointed out, its the BCS rankings that count toward AQ, and I doubt UH will crack into that THIS year. I like us starting just outside the top 25 next year and then making some noise, kind of like Nevada did this year. Interesting though that Nevada couldn’t get higher than they did with only one loss.

BTW . . . next week, big statement and sweet revenge against UNLV

    UH 62 UNLV 17

  157. kev-1 November 28, 2010 12:34 pm

#115 – with Miami as high as they are on Bess, I wouldn’t doubt that they have an eye on Hawaii’s recievers for the draft.

  158. kev-1 November 28, 2010 12:35 pm

BTW . . . Chad Henne sucks! He is very inaccurate and does not progress through his reads. Watch him. He seems to get stuck on his first, maybe second read if that. Being big with a strong arm is overrated. Colt, heal up and call the Dolphins.

I used to be a critic of Kanekoa but last night I thought she was a warrior. She put it all out there and would not let her team quit. She was very vocal and showed a lot of the kind of leadership that will add up to more wins for the Wahine. I thought she did one hell of a job.

  170. labrat November 28, 2010 1:35 pm

The key for success on offense next year will be their off season preparation and spring camp. They can not have the kind of drama they have had in the past. If they can come together as a unit and work hard together as a unit I see them as being the sole WAC champs next season.

According to College Football News rankings as of today, here’s some interesting information.

    #26 Hawaii

    #27 Florida

    #30 Iowa

    #31 Tennessee

    #34 Penn State

    #35 Michigan

    #36 Utah

    #44 Washington

    #49 Miami-Fla.

    #52 Georgia Tech

    #55 Notre Dame

    #58 Pittsburgh

    #63 BYU

    #69 UCLA

    #70 Texas

    #72 SMU

We should be proud of our team and shouldn’t take a back seat if we want to be great. To be great, the coaches should continue to build what it takes to be a champion. It all starts by having a great defense. We have the offense that can score points. We also need to improve our special teams, especially a big time returner. In recruiting, our priority needs are pass rushers, linebackers, defensive backs, athletes w/ speed, receivers. I believe we have some good offensive linemen in the program and some good running backs like Jon Lister. I don’t think we need QBs this year unless we find a great one.

NCAA screws Wahines in VB brackets.

4 brackets. Each bracket should have 5 TOP 20 teams.

Wahines are in the Seattle bracket that features 7 TOP 20 teams. The bracket also has 3 TOP 5 teams from this weeks polls.

Wahines plays an unranked team in the first round. Barring huge upsets, Wahines will play a TOP 20 team the rest of the tournament.

    iwonderwhytheyhateme (#154),

You’re thinking of last year. Boise has 19 seniors on their roster this year. They are losing some key players this year too including their two best receivers (Austin Pettis and Titus Young), starting RB (Jeremy Avery), starting TE (Tommy Gallarda), starting Safety (Jeron Johnson), starting Nickelback (Winston Venable), starting LB (Derrell Acrey), and a few key linemen. They are also losing their PK/P (Kyle Brotzman).

Still, 1/2 of Boise’s starters are underclassmen. They also run a lot of different formations and between that and their blowouts, they play most of their backups regularly. On the other hand, 2/3 of UH’s starters are seniors and, other than the DL, we rarely substitute. The other difference is that nearly all of Boise’s 2nd string are underclassmen. UH has several key senior backups (Dimude, LaCount, Blount).

Mack has been recruiting a lot more H.S. players and JC players with 3 to play 3. Between that and redshirting or greyshirting players, we are slowly increasing our depth. We are already seeing a lot of underclassmen playing key roles (George Daily-Lyles, John Hardy-Tuliau, Paipai Falemalu, Geordon Hanohano, Siaki Cravens, Haku Correa, etc.)

  191. Matt November 28, 2010 3:24 pm

Someone kept asking whether Alex Dunnachie could kickoff. Kicking is a different motion than punting. It is one thing for a soccer/football player that has done both for awhile, but we have to remember that last year was Alex’s first year ever playing American football. It would take him awhile to learn to kickoff from a tee consistently. Remember how inconsistent Alex’s punting was last year? This was after going to several camps to improve his punting and practicing for a considerable amount of time before being offered a scholarship. In my opinion, forcing Alex to learn a new skill without proper coaching would be setting him up for failure.

UNLV Coach Hauk interview on TV on upcoming game with UH.

Said some good things about the receivers who will be playing on Sundays.

Can’t charter flight due cost too much therefore need to travel commercial with the general public and inhibits game preparation.

That’s why Hawaii’s record on the mainland is not as good as their home record. (something like that)

Wonder if he know UH travels on commercial too – sounds like he’s setting up his excuse for this coming weekend.

jm2375 — yes, but in recent roles she looks older and has emerged as a super heavy. Even in Serenity, she looks matronly. A lot of stars emerged or were part of the 1/2 season TV series (Firefly). I’ve seen the DVD set for under $19. I first noticed Fillion in that show–reminded me of the Indiana Jones who shoots a guy attacking him with swords.

word from the former regime at UNLV was amazed at Hauck’s comment when informed that UNLV had a solid base to work with because they had a lot of poly’s on the team….. his comment is not printable for a family publication, but it shocked me……….made me think he should have stayed up in Missoula with all the Billy-Bobs and Bobby-Boys up there….

  206. Derek November 28, 2010 3:46 pm

You have to wonder what the people in Boise are thinking even right this minute. In mean, 17-0 and 24-7 at the half. They were looking at the worst being #3 in the BCS and playng in the Rose Bowl. They had an outside chance, but a good one in playing for the National Championship if Oregon and Auburn still lost in their last game. They have to play Utah St. this week a team they should beat by more than 40. But you have to believe that the players have a big let down after losing which they and just about everybody else thought they were going to pound Nevada. Give Nevada credit, but if they played 10 times, Boise would beat them 9 times. You can call it fate. You can call it destiny. Kyle Brotzman, the Boise St. kicker must be sick to not miss one, but two makable field goals.

And what about Nevada. On an all time high, will they take to the road to La Tech. They too, might be over confident after Friday’s win and will be vulnerable against a decent La Tech squad who has played much better of late. Can you smell upset?

  207. Shoko November 28, 2010 3:55 pm

Nevada is favored to beat LA Tech by 14, just as it was Boise State favored to beat Nevada by 14. Last time Nevada played in Ruston, it was a very close game. I think it was by three points. So, in that respect, one never knows.

As far as the upset on Friday, one could say destiny or fate, but I would say its karma.

  208. Pomai November 28, 2010 4:22 pm

#206 Derek – for all those getting on that kid Brotzman all I can say is what happened to the other 22 players, they didn’t show up.

Nothing to be ashamed of with this loss to UNC. The team kept their heads up and just played through the OVER-WHELMING difference in size and *SPEED* from the Tar Heels. No amount off wishing or coach-speak is going to overcome this.

It was a good showing for the Wahine in this tournament with a hard-fought/character-building win against SEC’s Ole Miss and just prior to that beating PAC 12’s Oregon State.

Wahine will be 2-1 in this tournament at 2nd place and will be 4-2 on the season. Good start!

Nice to see the Rebecca Dew I’ve been waiting to watch since her freshman season and good to see Kuehu’s bball instincts paying off on the scoreboard. While it was not much of a difference in the game, it was good that both these players played well against this kind of competition.

    GO BOWS!!!

  247. NorthShoreFan November 28, 2010 9:40 pm

Kazz…the begining of the game was not what I wanted to see. Tentative play against a top ten team is not what will win games. Wahine was physically over matched. You make up for this with hustle, intense defense, and a “no fear” attitude. The effort came later in the game and was good to see. Kuehu, Kanekoa are really Warriors. Our bigs need to learn to be physical and to block out. Too many times I see their bigs with not a body on them and some times all alone under the basket. This will not be good in conference play. These games are good learning games and we need to work on the fundamentals. Guard play was spotty when subs came in. They got picked a number of times. They need to be aware of where their man is at all times.

That said, this team will win some games and I son’t expect them to be in the bottom teir of the league. They will suprise some teams.

  251. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 28, 2010 9:47 pm

    Garret,

hopefully you can help me with this question.

How does Boise St., Fresno, Nevada, and if Hawaii gets in Hawaii factor into the 2012 AQ status equation?

I have been hearing that 1) Boise would factor in for 2011 but the other will not since we do not get into the conference until 2012 if anything.

The other is that the AQ status is made up of the previous ratings of the member schools whom make up the 2012 conference which would include fresno nevada etc.

  252. rooster November 28, 2010 10:05 pm

So Warriors being ranked in the top 25 would help them in negotiating a better deal with the MWC? Will the MWC want/need the Warriors even more?

  253. Ralph November 28, 2010 10:11 pm

Wahine over matched but they never gave up. Too much athleticism and speed on NC for our girls to match up to to be competitive. Like the men, the wahine is lacking at point guard with speed and ball handling quickness. Kanekoa is doing well and much more intense than last season but the points for NC and Ole Miss played at another time warp speed. Kanekoa and Ayabe didn’t have a chance when they were double teamed, NC quards were too quick, very fast athletes with good hands.

The Na Wahine will learn from this experience and they will be better as the season progresses. Coach Dana, like Gib, is playing her bench and that will motivate the girls to work harder in practice knowing that they can earn PT.

Next home date, Dec. 28 vs. Columbia in another tournament format.

  254. Ralph November 28, 2010 10:14 pm

NSF the Wahine weren’t tentative, NC is that quick and blazing fast. They were playing at another level of speed, even our zone defense couldn’t switch quick enough to cover the floor.

  255. Slugger November 28, 2010 10:15 pm

Thanks, Ferd, for voting for the home team.

    Night all!

  256. Ralph November 28, 2010 10:24 pm

NC outrebounded us 48-31 and that is a huge advantage, also giving up the ball on 21 TO adds to our woes. Kuehu seems to have the best court vision and feel for making a pass, and the best part of her game is her defense. Her shots will come, it’s been 3 years since her high school days, she has spent lots of time rehabbing her knees since her junior year in HS.

We will pass 10 wins this year, I hope we are ready to compete for the WAC title with a healthy Kuehu and continued outstanding play from Kamilah Jackson.

Take off your belt, your hat, your jacket and your shoe

And stand right there and do not move until I’m through.

    And I went …

    Oo, ee, oo ah ah,

    Oo ee, oo ah ah,

    And I said …

playing a little devils advocate here…

what if after UH gets in the MWC, WAC makes a play for Fresno, Nevada, and SDSU to come back to the WAC. If MWC can’t get to AQ, then what is the attraction for them to stay if the WAC says here’s the TV deal, here’s this and here’s that and you know what you don’t have to worry about traveling to HI since they will be in the MWC?

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    Hawaiian Mongoose,

  290. bighilofan2 November 29, 2010 5:59 am

i liked how the Big East teams, feeling they gotta travel halfway across country to play TCU, views that as cost of survival. so… when the East Coast peeps say that is okay, then its okay? sheeeshh… and UConn, a 4 loss team, gonna represent in a BCS bowl as a automatic qualifier? double sheshe.. i feel da fix is in… by TCU taking da deal, guarans the BCS voters from da East not gonna disrespect their new arrival and cut them outta da Rose.

  291. Garret November 29, 2010 6:10 am

UH’s invitation to the MWC as a football-only member was contingent on TCU leaving for the Big East–ST and others mentioned that. So, it looks like UH will definitely join the MWC after the next football season.

  292. mctruck November 29, 2010 6:11 am

Give TCU’s move to the BIGEAST a few years, maybe less…and we’ll see an exodus by schools leaving the conference because of the financial costs for it’s athletic programs to sustain traveling back and forth halfway across the continent; ala-UH/WAC scenario’s of the past.

  293. Garret November 29, 2010 6:12 am

    bighilofan2,

TCU going to the Big East does *nothing* to change which bowl they will be in. If Oregon and Auburn win on Saturday, then TCU will be in the Rose Bowl. TCU would have to drop from #3 to out of the top 12 to miss the Rose Bowl.

  294. mctruck November 29, 2010 6:14 am

    Goodmorning everyone…..have a blessed day.

  295. Garret November 29, 2010 6:15 am

TCU’s travel to Big East schools is only slightly longer via airplane than their travel would have been to MWC schools after BSU/Fresno/Nevada joined. If the MWC added UH and TCU was still there, TCU’s travel might actually have been *higher* in the MWC than it will be for the Big East.

If you look at where TCU is located on a map of the US, you’ll see their travel situation isn’t much different either way. The BIG difference between the Big East and the WAC16 is that the Big East has $20 million from the NCAA tournament to split among its members and the Big East has a basketball TV contract that is actually equal to its football TV contract. The WAC16 made no extra money from having so many teams…the Big East has money raining in from basketball.

  296. mctruck November 29, 2010 6:17 am

Very happy for UH invitation chances to the MWC football-only. Still got my fingers crossed for all other UH sports to be invited to the BWC.

  297. mctruck November 29, 2010 6:22 am

    Garret,

true, true; but bigeast schools are not used to the length of travel to and from, I’m not talking bout TCU travel. Actually…the bigeast needed a school like TCU to avoid their downward spiral in football strenght.

  298. mctruck November 29, 2010 6:26 am

How long will the bb$ sustain that kind of situation???, all sports?, only time will tell. my opinion.

  299. Pomai November 29, 2010 6:29 am

OK here is a question – if $$$ for travel would it be better for us and the MWC to join as a full member?

  300. anklebiters November 29, 2010 6:30 am

    ST:

You couldn’t have flown into Sky Harbor and taken Hawaiian #35 at 8am to HNL?

  301. Garret November 29, 2010 6:32 am

    mctruck,

The Big East is currently negotiating their next TV contract for football…TCU will increase their football TV value by enough to make everyone else in the Big East happy to travel to Fort Worth. They are adding Villanova also so they will have 10 football schools and 17 basketball schools, which is an odd number…but, we have seen over and over that the schools will make things work out if the $$$ is there.

Any Big East school would happily go to the Big 10, but will the Big 10 need to expand beyond their current 12? Adding schools will probably mean *less* money for each Big 10 school, reducing the attractiveness of expansion. The ACC was told that they wouldn’t get any extra TV money if they added teams (and they have 10+ years left on their TV contract), so if they expand they have to take less money for each school.

you guys make good points. … BUT …

i’ve learned from watchin da talkin heads dat genius, logic and intellect don’t count

when the outcome dominates how da east coast mentality justifies how day look at tings.

day look at em da wayz day wants. da bad part is, wen one of us falls down, its a “I told you so” from dem. when day have a bad day, day chalk it up as a fluke or sumtin.

A sad day for me. It’s sad when people who have entertained us pass away, but only two have stuck with me since my childhood. One of them is Harrison Ford with his cracking of the whip for the Indiana Jones trilogy, the other is Leslie, for his dry humor in Airplane and The Naked Gun. A tear jerker for me when I found out. You were a Hollywood treasure, something that is becoming harder and harder to find without either being playing a super hero or being teen pop idol. You stuck to your guns even as spoof comedies struggled at the box office in the late 90’s and still were able to reel in the laughs to those who had the honor to see your work. Goodbye Leslie. 🙁

  370. electronic cigarette reviews December 19, 2010 6:36 am

I smoked a pack a day for over 20 years and started e-smoking 3 weeks ago. I noticed a huge improvement in my breathing and lung capacity within days of switching to the e-cigarette. I feel better, my house, clothes, and hair no longer smell, and I was able to quit cigarettes almost immediately. I have tried patches, gum, herbs, acupuncture, hypnosis, and cold turkey, and none of them worked. With all other smoking cessation/nicotine replacement products, the quitting process was agonizing and the side effects were terrible. Switching to e-cigarettes was simple and after noticeable improvements in my health with a few days, it was a no-brainer.
