Takahara-Dias has in-person interview

So, I was wandering around UH this afternoon and I wandered into … Dana Takahara-Dias.
Yes, she was on her way to an in-person interview with the selection committee for the next UH women’s basketball coach.
These are the other confirmed candidates who have had in-person interviews:
• George Wolfe, a Kalani High graduate and former UH assistant coach.
• Gavin Petersen, Idaho State associate head coach and former UH assistant.
• Patrick Harrington, Colorado assistant coach.
• Joan Bonvicni, former Arizona coach.
• Mark Trakh, former USC coach.
• Jennifer Young, former UC Riverside coach.
• Jennifer Gross, UC Davis assistant coach.

The  offseason conditioning program officially started yesterday, with players training under the guidance of the strength and conditioning staff.

Here’s offensive lineman Laupepa Letuli:

It’s still spring, which means there’s still time for spring cleaning. The first place to start is the athletic department offices. Is a carpet supposed to be two-toned?

It’s really disappointing & disheartening that Nate could not catch on with some

Thanks, Colt for making their day and hope to see you this summer.

sound reasoning by JD to retain Coach Mike who has a good nucleus of returnees to build and go forward….i like what JD said and agree, he was straight-forward and I believe sincere….let’s all hope for the best….
Josh Chevalier can hit and Breland Almadova and Pi’ikea Kitamura are great local recruits (didnt see Trent Allianic, but those Kauai kids come tough n ready)….gotta hold our breath on McD and Vinnie, although, Catracalia is likey to go….good to hear MT has 3 hurlers in his sights and sure hope at least one is a southpaw.
Dunno about u guyz but I sure appreciate Kolt roamin CF and would like to see him remain there but he is so versatile to our team.

ST and Wena…my apologies as well, was a little busy last night….

Good to see some of the guys working out already….let’s keep it going and get everyone out there, especially in this heat…run, run, run,..train, train, train…..condition, condition, condition…..KEEP IT UP!!!!

    Hiya Mrs. C….

  26. FloridaTed May 27, 2009 9:05 am

I think one year is fine for Coach Trap, for now at least. He did have eight years and finally recruits more local kids. They used to be the lifeblood of the BB Bows.

If success won’t come next season, it will not come under Trap and we might as well start over. If he succeeds, give him his contract and move on.

  27. lava May 27, 2009 9:36 am

How about some pix of the new faces that arrived for summer conditioning?

  28. djmitcho May 27, 2009 9:50 am

d1, it will be nice to see PU with a football team again. They actually quit football after the ’91 season. That would bring the NWC up to 8 teams in football which includes Menlo. Hopefully LC can sustain it’s program

  29. roysan16 May 27, 2009 9:55 am

    To Jim Donovan,

I agree with what Stephan Tsai wrote in yesterday’s blog relating to why Coach Mike Trapasso should have received a more worthier contract extension than the one year rollover.

And seemingly everyone else thinks so, too. For the argument is that a one year rollover , as Stephan alluded to, “doesn’t help recruiting or provide stability”. And he goes on to write that his tenure wasn’t extended, it was prolonged. And I agree.

More so the perception of a one year rollover how I’m seeing it looks like you’re putting Coach Mike Trapasso on probation. And he shouldn’t be, especially seeing how the baseball team has a nice wind in it’s sails, so to speak.

When considering all the good versus all the bad a one year rollover is like a slap in the face to Coach Mike Trapasso . And quite frankly it’s an a ala Herman Frazier kind of thinking, for if you’d open your eyes and look what Coach Mike Trapasso is trying to build and accomplish you should realize, too, that a one year rollover is so deflating.

Furthermore when you focus on how Coach Mike Trapasso fulfills all the criterias of having his teams being competitive, players graduating, players being good citizens and seeing higher attendance figures at the box office then it stands to reason that Coach Mike Trapasso is fulfilling his tenure.

In some circles a similar performance by a coach would get a nice pat on the back, especially when you weigh all the good. But here you give the coach a one year rollover, which to me looks so connotative like the coach’s future, mainly how the team performs next year hinges on if the coach we’ll be retained. Or let go. And how I see it Coach Mike Trapasso is more deserving of this type of pressure.

For if you look at the aforementioned criterias the baseball team has certainly been competitive (nationally ranked at one time), the APR is 991/1000, players having been staying out of trouble and this year’s attendance hit a 12 year high of averaging nearly 3000 fans a game.

This all good, and aside from a few more W’s what more can you ask for?

And a few seasons ago, notably 2006, he was National Coach of the year.

With everything going in the right direction for the baseball team, especially this flame the fans have adopted and the renewed interests and excitement in the program wouldn’t it have behooved you to have rewarded the coach a three year contract, where it shows the supporters of the program and incoming recruits that the coach is our man. For he should undoubtedly be…and in view of everything Coach Trapasso should be highly esteemed than to peddle a one year roller to the coach. This is not right, Jim Donovan.

  30. (Jesse)James May 27, 2009 9:57 am

dj…yeah, I thought they stopped football in 91 and not in the 80s because Chad Kurashige (DMHS grad) played for them and they came back to play Hawaii while he was still there.

  31. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] May 27, 2009 10:02 am

    Hiya!

Can’t second- guess JD, I’m sure there are lots of behind the scenes things going on that may have been in play during the contract negotiations with Coach Trap. I’m glad he’s here for at least another year, tho. The BaseBows are filling the stands and that is very important too.

So- gigi got me going this morning on my blog:

    gigi-hawaii said…

“Good to hear Colt’s name again. David thinks Greg Alexander is too slow; that’s why he keeps getting sacked. I tend to agree. What do you think?”

    Blogger LizKauai said…

“Greg Alexander is a big and scary looking guy for a QB. I remember when he first appeared and we all went “QB? not LB?”. He can really move when he wants to too.
With more familiarity with our system (whatever that may be… I dunno anymore – it’s not pure run and shoot) this year, and some new running and receiving tools in the box, I think the potential for more than just a winning season is all there.
Also- we will not be playing UGA and Florida back to back.

I’d like to see Greg as Mr. Intimidation this year- having fun with a “go ahead, make my day” stinkeye to the defenders and a longball to keep everyone honest.”

  32. al May 27, 2009 10:06 am

long known for their long locks, the hawaii warriors appear to be shedding their manes for a more practical football ‘do, the buzz cut.

interesting. a rather significant symbol of a new coach, new era, new look.

could it be more business like these days?

did someone say we are 100 days from the first tailgate and football game?

  33. warriorfanny2 May 27, 2009 10:07 am

S&C (strength n conditioning) is perhaps the most important tool in off-season training. And, the S&C coach is the man.
Players answer directly to his (and assistants) instruction and his evaluation can make or break many players.
This June, the likes of Boise State and TCU will repeat their summer training rituals that has produced the best mid-major conditioning programs in D1A football.
Mike Barwis heads into his 2nd year as Woverine S&C coach. He has already created legacy at A2 and is among the top 5 S&C coaches in college athletics.
Before Rich Rodriguez bought a house near his new job he secured a committment from Barwis to follow him to A2.

Read to understand and grasp an idea of what a football factory produces. Naturally, these teams have money, but programs such as Boise State makes efficient with what they do have and has nearly perfect committment from their players to remain on campus to participate in the program’s eight-week cycle.

lizk….more importantly, did you ask her if she lurks?

  35. warriorfanny2 May 27, 2009 10:26 am

Liz, have u seen Trent Allianic play? Great to have Kauai on our roster, they breed tough kids out there.

In regards to Greg Alexander and speed–be mindful that a QB may not have vertcal speed but is judged by his pocket-quickness and instincts. Colt had an uncanny sense of “feeling” pressure and an internal-clock that enabled him to make moves instinctively to avoid sacks or to release the ball a split-sec before being hit…. I believe it was the proverbial 3-sec clock he learned from playing baseball.

Alexander is Alexander and having said that Greg has accumulated precious game time which will help to internalize his play. I saw it coming by his 3rd start.
There are prolly a dozen mental checkoffs he has to make before and during a play. That is a conservative number.
Alexander is developing his pocket-play and is still a work-in-progress but much more along in his development.
If our OL jells Greg will be OK.
Right now–we want Alexander to continue growing and to max on his potential–I believe he will.

  36. wahinefan May 27, 2009 10:27 am

I think Trap is lucky to even have a job. At most other schools (with the same history in baseball) as UH, he wouldn’t have gotten an extension.
Eight seasons of mediocrity is enough.

I truly believe that UH has the potential to be a power in baseball again, like other mid majors Long Beach State and Irvine.
We just need a great coach and Trap is not it.

  37. (Jesse)James May 27, 2009 10:29 am

    al…oh no….not that again…LOL

  38. Garret May 27, 2009 10:36 am

Both of my girls donated their hair to Locks of Love–I think that it is a great cause and am glad that the Meatoga donated his hair.

  39. warriorfanny2 May 27, 2009 10:36 am

The tragic lesson we have learned at UH is not the realization of the need for a “great” coach, but rather, the the people-in-the-system that are assembled to select and the process that is applied to find that “great” coach.
When you can make efficient the system that produces coaches, you can expect the same from its product.

  40. Ralph May 27, 2009 10:36 am

per Ferd’s article Trapasso had to be told by JD to recruit more locals and it was one of four criteria JD evaluated Trap. It was obvious he wasn’t looking at the local talent and for JD to keep a coach that needs a mandate to recruit local is ludicrous.

  41. Garret May 27, 2009 10:37 am

It would be great if Nate could help the Warriors during the offseason and/or during the season! The Warriors’ running game and pass protection hasn’t been the same since both he and Reagan finished their careers at UH.

  42. djmitcho May 27, 2009 10:38 am

    J(J),
Chad Kurashige played at University of the Pacific, not at Pacific University. And though I never met Chad Kurashige, I definitely know the name.

  43. Garret May 27, 2009 10:39 am

Notre Dame fired Willingham in 2004…and he apparently has still be getting paid by them. In fact, his pay from Notre Dame is more than Charlie Weis’ base salary!

The school paid Willingham $650,000 from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008, the third straight year they’ve paid him that sum since his firing.

It also left the former coach, who has since been fired by the University of Washington, as the second-highest paid employee on Notre Dame’s payroll who is not an officer, director or trustee. The numbers came from the school’s latest Form 990 federal tax form, which was obtained by The Journal Gazette on Wednesday.

And, for the third straight year, Willingham’s compensation is higher than the base salary of current head coach Charlie Weis.

  44. Ralph May 27, 2009 10:39 am

attendance and income have increased this year from what-an empty stadium the prior year and therefore lower ticket sales and concession revenue. BB lost another scholarship due to APR, and that is two consecutive years bb has lost a scholarship or part of a scholarship.

  45. Garret May 27, 2009 10:40 am

Charlie Weis took a pay cut after a bad year in 2007.

What is known is that Notre Dame paid Weis less in base salary in the ’07-’08 fiscal year than it did in ’06-’07, when it paid him a combined package of $716,277, including $598,000 in base salary.

  46. d1島 May 27, 2009 10:42 am

    djmitcho,

You are correct, I was just going off of memory on that date.
#2 son already e-mailed me with the same news a little while ago. I guess they kinda excited about some “re-newed” blood in the league. 8 teams will mean thay can probably all play a D3-only schedule.
Spot on about L&C, hope they stick around!

  47. Garret May 27, 2009 10:42 am

Could UH use its family connection to see if this recruit would be interested in the Warriors? This guy could be a difference-maker, and he’s had two cousins play for UH.

The 15-year-old football standout who made his varsity debut at age 13 recently posted the highest SPARQ Rating of the more than 1,500 athletes at the Nike Baltimore Combine.

Connor’s older brother played two years of junior college baseball, and the Crowells had cousins — one boy, one girl — who played baseball and softball, respectively, at the University of Hawaii.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound sophomore ran the fastest shuttle time (4.01), surprising even himself, in posting his top SPARQ Rating (121.02).

“I wasn’t expecting to put those kind of numbers up,” Crowell said. “I had been working on my 40 [yard dash] the past couple months, but I didn’t expect to run all those [times].”

In addition to his shuttle, Crowell ran a 4.55 40-yard dash, leapt 32.7 inches in the vertical jump and had a kneeling power ball toss of 38 feet, 5 inches.

That performance, along with his play on the field last season, has major college coaches taking note.

  48. Ralph May 27, 2009 10:45 am

WAC isn’t a power house conference and yet JD wants UH to finish in the middle of the pack and that is reasonable…I guess he isn’t reaching for the stars- no demand orexpectation to win the WAC, but winning it would be nice, as he is content in finishing 4th in a 7 member conference..no wonder a coach with a 53% winning record is considered doing his job, no high expectations from the AD, just don’t lose too much money while achieving mediocrity.

  49. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] May 27, 2009 10:49 am

Worst trying to pass on stuff we already know.

  51. wahinefan May 27, 2009 10:51 am

Warriorfanny2 I think I’d rather take the chances with another UHAD selection committee than hoping and praying Trap can get his team to pitch and hit better. He is just not a good coach period.

  52. warriorfanny2 May 27, 2009 10:52 am

i understand the frustration for local recruits but we need to move forward–Breland Almadova, Pi’ikea Kitamura and Trent Allianic compliment Kolt, Fujii, Johnson, Russell Doi, Harrison Kuroda and Easton Torigoe, John Worthigton….there will be more…..that’s a start in the right direction….come home boyz.

  53. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] May 27, 2009 10:56 am

Garret, my #2 son is just about ready to do the shear job too. I told him about Locks of Love.

Re Colt and Greg. Yup, there is only one Colt, imho.
I see Greg “having fun” and going for it in his own way. He has the calmness and power of a big guy – while Shane, for example, strikes me as being the in-yo-face, cocky guy… both different but good qualities that can rally a team around them.

And perhaps going for 2 points after every TD would be viewed upon as unsportsmanlike… must adjust strategy… lol.

On a side note, and Commish knows this isn’t the forum to do so but needs to get this off his chest… what is up with the major jump between All-Pro and All-Madden difficulty settings??? Select All Madden and suddenly DBs don’t know how to cover, WRs can’t catch, OL can’t block… Adjusting the computer AI is one thing… downright cheapness is another.

Dang, are the committee members being paid per hour? Is this the reason they are so slow?

Why add back a name so late in the selection process? Unless, this person will be the #1 recommendation to Jim D.

Aiesssooooooooooos, lets go bows, lets go bows!!!

  67. Wayne O. May 27, 2009 12:39 pm

Eh, Ralph! Good job. Mediocrity spells “I have a job”. As Larry Price likes to say, mediocre people always think they are trying their best. That’s why Hawaii finished 7th out ot 9 WAC teams in the recent WAC commisioner’s trophy which includes 19 sports. Good job Donovan. The women’s basketball coaching job is a joke. We’ve already lost one if not two recruiting years. Trapasso needs to find someone who can coach pitchers because I don’t think Konishi can do it. All I see is him in the dugout sitting down and being a slob. Find a guy even a consultant
or somebody who can teach the pitchers to throw an effective change up. UH pitchers can’t throw the heat so they have to change speeds effectively to get people out. It’s basic. Teach somebody to throw a sinker too. My goodness. If they keep doing the same things over and over again they might as well drink Coors like and say “they are what they think they are”. On another note, congratulations to the women’s polo team for making it to the final four. I’m sure that got us very excited!!!! Just being a disgusted UH fan. That’s why I’m glad football is coming soon so that we can hit some people and feel good again, at least until we start losing again.

Did AT&T break American Idol’s rules to help Kris Allen win? Teaching Kris Allen fans in Arkansas to send 10 text votes for Kris with the press of one button and giving them free phones with free text messaging services and *not* doing the same for Adam sure rigged the votes. I wonder how many times those people pushed the button that sent 10 votes at once?

AT&T, one of the biggest corporate sponsors of “American Idol,” might have influenced the outcome of this year’s competition by providing phones for free text-messaging services and lessons in casting blocks of votes at parties organized by fans of Kris Allen, the Arkansas singer who was the winner of the show last week.

Representatives of AT&T, whose mobile phone network is the only one that can be used to cast “American Idol” votes via text message, provided the free text-messaging services at two parties in Arkansas after the final performance episode of “American Idol” last week, according to the company and people at the events.

There appear to have been no similar efforts to provide free texting services to supporters of Adam Lambert, who finished as the runner-up to Mr. Allen.

Representatives of AT&T helped fans of Mr. Allen at the two Arkansas events by providing instructions on how to send 10 or more text messages at the press of a single button, known as power texts. Power texts have an exponentially greater effect on voting than do single text messages or calls to the show’s toll-free phone lines. The efforts appear to run afoul of “American Idol” voting rules in two ways. The show broadcasts an on-screen statement at the end of each episode warning that blocks of votes cast using “technical enhancements” that unfairly influence the outcome of voting can be thrown out.

And the show regularly states that text voting is open only to AT&T subscribers and is subject to normal rates.

ralph….typically a one day clinic will not make or break a player. sometimes at the hs level old habits and muscle memory takes awhile to breakdown and retrain. it starts with the head of course, they got to believe they can improve.

usually analysis begins witht the feet and then work your way upwards. then again, i am old school.

  75. Garret May 27, 2009 12:47 pm

    Ralph,

I’d guess they would pick La Tech to finish high in the WAC since they won their bowl game and have had some excellent recruiting classes.

  76. Ralph May 27, 2009 12:48 pm

  77. Garret May 27, 2009 12:49 pm

New England signed a LB today so Pisa doesn’t seem to be an option for them anymore. I’ve read speculation that Lennon got a much smaller contract than Pisa was asking for, but I haven’t seen that confirmed yet.

The agreement with Lenon likely takes the Patriots out of the mix for Pisa Tinoisamoa, a free agent who visited with the club Tuesday

  78. al May 27, 2009 12:49 pm

    85th?
    that is a joke.

    5th in the wac!?

okay if we finish 5th or below i’ll buy guava and wf2 lunch at an eatery of their choice.

(btw, where is my brother guava these days?)

  79. Garret May 27, 2009 12:50 pm

So, it looks like Pisa will choose between the Bills and the Bears.

Unless a new suitor comes into play for Pisa Tinoisamoa, it looks like the veteran linebacker will choose between the Bears and Buffalo Bills.

That leaves the Bills and Bears to wrangle over a player both teams want to plug in at strong-side linebacker. The Bears would seem to have an edge simply because Tinoisamoa played for Lovie Smith and Bob Babich as a rookie for the Rams in 2003. Tinoisamoa seemed at ease visiting with coaches and players alike during the OTA at Halas Hall last Wednesday. If the Bears can sign him in the next few days, he will be available to participate in 12 of the 14 OTA’s, which would give him a good crash course on the defense in advance of training camp.

  80. Garret May 27, 2009 12:52 pm

Q&A about Jake Ingram’s battle for the long-snapper spot.

Aloha, with the loss of Lonie Paxton, the long-snapper position is a bit of a question mark. While the Pats have picked up two highly touted players at the position, I was just wondering which do you think has the upper hand in the near and distant future? Is Nathan Hodel the guy for the upcoming season, while Hawaii’s Jake Ingram readies himself for NFL action, or do you see Ingram as being good enough to get the starting nod sometime in the upcoming season? How do you see the situation playing out?

It’s way to early to be making a call on something like that. We’ve had one opportunity to watch these guys snap and that came during last week’s organized team activities (OTAs) that was open to the media. Both guys looked to have great velocity on their snaps but Ingram was off target on one or two that I saw. That was just one of many snapshots we’ll get to see as the summer gets underway and camp begins. Check back in the middle of August and we may have a better idea of how things look.

  81. al May 27, 2009 12:52 pm

8-10 that would seem to be semi-finalists if you ask me.

someone is turning the screws. soon it will be embarassing.
oh wait, perhaps we are there already.

anyway, candidates need to be patient since there aren’t many positions available in this job market.

  82. Ralph May 27, 2009 12:53 pm

I don’t think Gross is Hinshaw’s doing, she gained the spot on her own merit…up and coming coach who played the game and she has been part of a staff that is transitioning successfully from DII to D1 at UC Davis…we need a program builder and not someone who wants to only be a coach- remember Von Appen…guy refused to attend a function hoisted by Cayetano with boosters or friends with money…

  83. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 27, 2009 12:53 pm

In baseball’s case, I don’t think JD saying that Trapasso needing to recruit more locally is being done for the hell of it.

  84. Garret May 27, 2009 12:54 pm

I think that picking the Warriors 5th is low–I don’t expect the magazines to pick UH over BSU, but 5th is way too low. I’d like to point out that the picked UH low last year also and UH ended up tied for second.

  85. al May 27, 2009 12:55 pm

    but, i ask of you.
    really.
how can there be a choice other than mark trakh?

(okay, he could be asking for the big bucks)

  86. Ralph May 27, 2009 12:56 pm

I wonder if K. Mark Takai reads the blog from Kuwait…as a former UH athlete I am sure he has a vested interest on how JD goes about his business and how he can help from the legislature…as a competitive swimmer I doubt he is happy with benchmark for bb to finish in the middle of the pack or did Ferd get it wrong again…

  87. al May 27, 2009 12:56 pm

  88. al May 27, 2009 12:59 pm

14 months ago….he was told to recruit locally not just recently.

    its simple;
local boys = boost in attendance
too bad it took 8 years to go figure?

the two players that boosted attendance more than anyone else on the team are:

    jayson kramer and kolten wong.

  91. Ralph May 27, 2009 1:09 pm

Bonvicini could rival Trakh as a coach marvel…She ran a powerhouse at Long Beach State before going to Arizona and Arizona can’t keep up with the California schools in the Pac 10, same as their fb program..

  92. Ralph May 27, 2009 1:11 pm

basically, if all things being equal in coaching ability, etc., pick the woman for the program it needs its own identity…

  93. Garret May 27, 2009 1:31 pm

Recruiting locally also saves the Athletic Department money since in-state tuition is so much cheaper. It also saves on the recruiting budget.

Plus, since recruits generally want to stay near home, UH has an advantage with local recruits instead of fighting an uphill battle for mainland recruits. Any sport where Hawaii high schools produce many D-IA recruits should have local recruits as a priority for UH…any coach that doesn’t see that really is missing out on a major factor for success. This is especially important for baseball, where the recruit’s family must cover the part that the partial scholarship doesn’t cover.

They set it up for gamblers as Phil Steele is a consultant to several houses and the mag cost close to $10 and contains well over 325 pps.

Last year Hawaii T w Nevada and LaT for 2nd at 5-3.
Personnel-wise how do we improve on O or D?
OK, our safeties have to be better than last year, but by how much? They were terrible last year.
How much diff under Chris Tormey?
We lose a solid DT (Josh Leonard) and all-wac DE (Veikune).
Adam Leonard and Sol were perennial starters at LBs and formed the backbone for our D.
    I dont see it.

We have the same OL returning. I’ll ask again, how much of a difference will Gordie make? U all have heard the sayin about makin chicken salad.
Until, chiz or green make a statement, we are vanillaprone at RB.
QB, Greg should be better. agreed.
WRs, the best unit on the team, but can Ron Lee walk the talk?
Will Rolo improve as well as QB mentor?

    ST’s?
I know we will get better under Tormey.
let’s see if he keeps other teams awake late at night.

Draw your own conclusions, but FSU, BSU, NEV, LaT and SJSU have something to say. Im dying to see the ground work the new coach at NMSU lays down.
Overall, our warrior team will have to earn respect–the JJ dayz are over.

    To Bulla,

Yesterday you wrote and inferred that Coach Jones is foremost a businessman and maybe his motivation are the Ben Franklins in leaving UH. And I disagree, for he has often said that he could have stayed in the NFL at a higher pay than taking the UH job. This is a common, yet redundant argument that everyone says. But it’s true. What’s further from the truth is he greed for money.

What quenches his thirst for life, I’m thinking, is being proclaimed as the architect of the run and shoot. And taking football reclamation projects , like he did at UH, and like what he’s trying to do at SMU and building the teams into respectable programs.

The residual effects of building teams from scratch and showcasing his run and shoot offense on the college level has garnered the coach a lot of praiseworthiness. And this is more rewarding to him than money. It sates his ego, and I’m saying this in a good way.

Replicating what he did at UH at SMU would garner the coach further lavishness. And further enhancing of his ego, and, again, I’m saying this in a good way.

And this is what he wants, more so than the Ben Franklins. The SMU job opening is nirvana to him because if he achieves successes there he would definitely leave a favorable impression on the college scene, which could really define his legacy as a college football coach. And this is what he wants people to remember him for doing.

On the surface it’s easy to cast aspersion at the coach because there’s such a large ammounts of money involved, but I think it’s the dangling of the SMU job that was enticing to him than the dangling of the monies.

  116. Ralph May 27, 2009 4:18 pm

with Herman Frazier as AD made JJ choice to move a lot easier…SMU offered a new opportunity, a peace of mind and people who were willing to make the fb program a success….HF was incompetent as UH AD

  117. warriorfanny2 May 27, 2009 4:21 pm

Let’s face it, in 1999, the run n shoot was at the cutting edge of college football and its mentors wore the sacred cloth.
    Not anymore.
Virtually every team in the Big 12 runs a hybrid 4-wide spread. Can u say, Texas and Oklahoma? Yikes!
Look closely at the PAC 10, too. Stoops saved his job by hiring a TT WR coach to run his O.

Membership in this once exclusive club has increased and it holds annual conventions with name tags attached…. you can bet there arent JJ sightings like there are people looking 4 Elvis.
Mouse Davis is no longer an icon but rather a trivia question.

Auburn needed a quick fix and hired a coach who wrote a book on the subject. They fired him the following season before it reached the midway point.

While JJ was once seen as a lexicon for the RNS vernacular, he is now remembered as the coach who left paradise to be skewered to a team that has been walking dead for 23 years.

get over it, the man named JJ has left the building…and Damien remains the only canonized Saint in Hawaii.

  118. Ralph May 27, 2009 4:36 pm

and Ron Lee has gotten up from his nap where he dreamed his runners ran for 1500 yards this season..he is bring back the run as his yearlings learn to shoot

  120. chawan_cut May 27, 2009 4:44 pm

oh yeah, james, good to know it wasn’t you in that accident too.

  121. madeinhawaii May 27, 2009 4:57 pm

We may have the same O-line, but they are a year older, a year wiser and a year stronger. And being a year stronger makes a pretty big difference. Being a year more experienced does to. The Seniors on the opposite side of the field that gave them grief last year are gone. With a more veteran line coach, a year of strength conditioning, and greater familiarity with what needs to be done, I expect to see a vastly improved O-line.

Offensively, I see our Warriors as capable of scoring against any team next season. And scoring enough to win. The question will be if our Defense can get the ball back for the Offense to make enough of a difference in the Win column. Will the defense be able to stop the running game on 3rd and short?

  122. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2009 4:57 pm

OK, I ran into Dana Takahara-Dias this afternoon. Yes, she is a finalist.

  123. warriorfanny2 May 27, 2009 5:00 pm

Ron Lee is as good as they come.
As a Christian, as a son, as a father, as a brother, as a coach and as a friend.
If he were cloned, we would have world peace and American football would be played by the Taliban in the Wahhabi Sunni Football Conference.

Coach Lee has to remind fokz as a stand-in for John Wayne.
He was the singer who warmed-up the crowd for Sinatra.
The comic who followed Rickles in Vegas after everyone left at 3 am.
The coach who sat in the box and spotted for JJ.
The guy who dotted the “i” and crossed the “t” but never wrote the script….until now.

We all want Coach Lee to succeed and following an offensive act like JJ’s isnt the easiest way to win quick affection. But Coach Ron has hops as they say in the football network and no one is more deserving of a chance to prove it.
He has a stellar group of WRs returning along with a seasoned QB and a bud by the name of Gordie Shaw that will watch his back. He mentored Stuzz and u can bet had something to say about the Rolo aquisition.
So, there it is, the table is set.

It’s time for Ron Lee to shine.

do the applicants have to fly themselves here? or is that part of UH’s budget to hire? do they really have no clue that they need to interview in person that many people?
or are they trying to be fair and not like the heisman presentation where they invite the other 3 just for pity sake and make them go thru all that extra for nothing. i still think they invited colt just because they admitted their guilt for not having him the year before when his stats were unreal.

The Cougar head logo, the widely recognized and beloved graphic symbol of Washington State University, was originally designed in 1936 by Randall Johnson, a 1937 WSU alumnus.

  147. wafan May 27, 2009 6:02 pm

If you visit the Pullman campus make sure you stop in at Fernando’s. You can buy the best tasting ice cream and Cougar Gold cheese. Yum!

Fernando’s is located on campus and proceeds benefit the ag programs.

okay….so now the selection board can sleep at night.
…they have satisfied any eeo issues by having an equal number of females as there are males
… they have further satisfied eeo with a senior applicant, one who is over 45.
…they have satisfied the political issues with a candidate for the chancellor, next governor, and then some.
…they have satisfied the former hc
…they will have quelled any blasts by the local natives.

so can we just go about business now and pick the candidate who can best ressurect the program?

  152. whitey May 27, 2009 6:12 pm

good evening tsaikos. selection of wbb is going down to the wire. the list is pretty impressive and i have no opinion on who should be selected. my only question is how will he/she fit into uh and the community???? understand that wbb does not have a big following, but the recipe is there for it to grow and become a viable program which should attract more fans. whoever is selected, my best to you and welcome to the family.

  153. warriorfanny2 May 27, 2009 6:12 pm

no offense al, but i cant stand in-the-box thinking….life is about colors betw black n white.

Actually, no, you can’t just be a volunteer coach.
You may be a graduate assistant (UH already has those spots filled) or a student manager (if you’re an undergrad).
They’re going to have to get creative.

  166. FloridaTed May 27, 2009 6:46 pm

The entire 2008 UH Football program get’s a pass from me this year, period.

Sure there was talent, but their cohesiveness was more like a battalion of UN Soldiers. No real plan was in place, too many coaching comittees, and the old, believing, fighting spirit was completely absent.

Sure, we won some games we shouldn’t have, but we also lost some games, no way we ever should have. All things considered, I was happy with our 7 – 7 record.

But now, fast forward to this year, a totally different athmosphere throughout the entire Warrior Ohana. Great Coaching additions, a comprehensive approach to tackle the season and upgraded talent on the field to go with it, but most of all, a renewed hunger for achievement by all.

We may lose some close battles, but we won’t embarrass ourselves in 2009, no sir, that’s why I count on a 10 wins + season and that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

    .

  167. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2009 6:54 pm

The offense is going to be really good this season.
I watched some video today, and, I tell ya, some of the backup receivers did some good things this spring.

  168. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2009 6:55 pm

Then I was at the unsupervised workouts this afternoon. Shane Austin threw some nice passes. Even Greg Alexander, who was coordinating the drills, praised Austin.

  169. Stephen Tsai May 27, 2009 6:56 pm

I’m thinking the most talented athlete is Royce Pollard.
    He can do handstands.
He can jump over beat writers.
And, today, he was throwing perfect spirals. Just for fun.

The coaches already have all types of oddities in their ballots, as they tried to get revenge on rivals or boost the ratings of teams in their conference or where their friend’s coached. That was with the knowledge that their final ballots would be made public…for some reason, they will keep the votes a secret again and I hate to think about the potential abuses of the system now.

The final regular-season ballots in the USA TODAY Coaches’ Poll will no longer be made public beginning with the 2010 football season, the American Football Coaches Association announced Wednesday, a decision that surprised some coaches.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said, “I think there needs be some accountability.” He would argue for preseason and final regular-season ballots being made public. “It’s probably not good (confidential final votes). … I didn’t mind opening up my vote. I vote myself. I don’t give it to a GA (graduate assistant coach). I literally will sit up. I don’t usually sleep after a game anyway, and I might call my vote in at 1 or 2 in the morning and I try to make it make sense. I want to be able to defend my vote every week whether it’s public or not.”

  215. roysan16 May 27, 2009 10:40 pm

Wow, I just finished reading comments from other boards and the other news papers concerning the subject of UH baseball and the future of Coach Trapasso and I was surprised at how everyone has the coach under the microscope. And scrutinizing him unfavorably, including another renowned columnists saying basically it should have been a time for UH to be looking for a new baseball coach.

And, granted, maybe they’re all correct in their assessment. And maybe they’re not. For, I’m guessing vociferous fans, bloggers and even that columnist are allowed to emit their pent up emotions of living through eight year’s worth of mediocrity shown by the baseball team. And they’ve surely have written some denigrating things about the coach . For it’s their prerogative. And choosing.

But I think it’s unfair and unjust.

And I’ll stand apart from them, and stand in Coach Trapasso’s corner.

And hear me out on this one as impart my reasoning.

What’s overlooked and should be mentioned is the competitiveness of the coaches in the WAC, whose records and longevity at their respective schools is very telling of the types of coaches Coach Trapasso is up against, too. And how I see it the skippers of the other teams– I’d venture to say probably grade out at the upper top of the scale in coaching ability. Of which, yes, I know shouldn’t be an excuse for Coach Trapasso. But orchestrating the team through these last eight years, sometimes with lack of talent. And against pretty good coaches has brought mediocrity. But to think that the cure all to all of these problems is finding another coach I don’t agree with.

San Jose State- Sam Piraro (685-520-6 in 21 seasons)

Fresno State-Mike Batesole (7 seasons, one NCAA title, did an excellent job at Northridge)

    Louisiana Tech-Wade Simoneaux (7 seasons)

New Mexico State-Rocky Ward (10 seasons, 2002 and 2003 NCAA tournament appearance, 254 wins)

Nevada- Gary Powers has accomplished in his 26 years of directing the team is take four Wolf Pack teams to NCAA Regional appearances in 1994, 1997, 1999 and 2000, win over 750 games

Sacramento State-One of the West Coast’s longest tenured coaches, Sacramento State graduate John Smith continues his quest to build Hornet baseball into a major Division I power entering his 30th year. 800 wins.

And Coach Trapasso has been right up there in the mix. Count two WAC coach of the year awards, and an NCAA Coach of the Year award in his nine years. And a 2006 Regional appearance. I’d say not bad, certainly not the end of the world. Or wishing for the coaches demise and departure.

His personal accolades have been stellar, and reflects that he’s a great coach.

Wishfully, my hopes and yearnings is to see the team do better just like everyone else that roots for the UH baseball team. But I think we should grant the coach additional time. And have patience.

Looking at a 50% winning ratio after eight years. And looking at the mandates that Coach Trapasso has accomplished, including fund raising for the team are all things that weigh in his favor. And, yes, I know it could be better. But it not all that bad.

With a sudden surge of discontent, especially from the other columnist from the other paper leading the cheer is beyond logic. But, again, that’s their prerogative.

And my greatest wish is that people would be pragmatic when looking at the UH baseball program. And realize that the eight year orbit they’re on reflects, too, on the pool of D-1 baseball talent coming out of the state of Hawaii.

Recruiting locally when the coach is handicapped at what D-1 baseball talent there’s available. And then trying to compose a team with what’s available against some of collegiate baseballs best coaches from the WAC is a formidable job for anyone.

In closing what gets my ire is the disparagingly types of remarks directed at the coach. And, if, roysan16 is the only standing in his corner through this type of assassination, seemingly, the coach is going through then so be it. But I do so in thinking independently and with a clear mind and never influenced on how others think. This time, I’ll reiterate, Coach Trapasso was deserving of a 3 year contract instead of a rollover. And all the conjuncture of reading other sites and other site’s newspapers of wishing for a new coach is sad full.

  226. Kazz May 28, 2009 12:01 am

Unfortunately there is no way to measure how others outside of here actually attend UH games in person.

ON the negative side, those fools represent the people that are NOT coming to the games.

The question is, how do you tell people that the world is round when they believe the world is flat and supported by a giant turtle?

I guess when people lose money on sports-gambling it’s apparent that it’s a tough loss to take.

    BowsForever,

I do know the “cabbage-promoter” you speak of.

It is quite funny and a relief from reading the amount of “personal attacks” taking place there.

BTW, is it a “personal attack” when it is done online, in a public forum, and using “pseudo-names” to hide identities?

    roysan16,

The post-2007 Sugar Bowl football season, has created a sub-culture amongst “UH-lukewarms” that cannot stand to lose regardless of the situations and fact surrounding the circumstances that led to several of our programs having a tough fall 08 and spring 09 season.

I do believe that MORE pressure needs to be put on by the athletic director to ensure that success will come sooner than later though.

If the ONE year was JD’s way of saying “thanks, BUT…” then so be it. But I think many can agree that ONE year is not a real “pat on the back”.

And as ST eluded to earlier, it doesn’t help recruiting at all.

Занятно пишете, жизненно. Все-таки, для того, чтобы делать по-настоящему интересный блог, нужно не только сообщать о чем-то, но и делать это в интересной форме:)

the tabloid reports that a name for the wbb vacancy has been forwarded to JD last night…should we expect an announcement today…considering the people on the committee, how can they screw up the list of the final finalist, unless there was a lot of horse trading after the fact and names were added to satisfy the chosen few…

they need to pick a program changer, the wbb program as it sits is so far down the road that it will take a lot of effort to resurrect a dead program. I think the first thing the coach need to do is make the game of bb fun again for those on the team, the wins will come, then the fans will start to return with better play and competitive bb.

Okay last one before I row into bed to milk the cow…in my dreams that is…

The buzz around UH athletics would be anticipatory if it were on the eve of an important game. Or a special announcement. And therefore it would be a welcoming sound.

But in this case, presently, the buzz it’s not pleasing because it comes with so much innuendo within what’s going on up there within the department this past week. And this adverse publicity may not be so endearing to the supporters of the program.

What awaits, half jokingly, is an artist’s rendering of a caricature of donkeys running the department with real life likeness of the ones whom actually do.

Yes, I know, to some, it’s not funny. And probably mean spirited but it just seems everything that’s emanating from the UH athletic department has people second guessing. And this isn’t good at all.

My only hope is that they, meaning JD and company, come up with the antidote for doing things correctly in the future. Whereas, consequently, we’d be spared of second guessing his decisions.

    Good morning!

    16 wake-ups to go.

9 for the seniors. Quite a few will return next school year.

Thus far this week has been been the longest month of my life.

I would be interested to find out why and how the wbb “finalists” were selected. Not the PC answer but the plain-old truth. The shenanigans in hiring continue. Amazing how well the good-old-boys network continues to thrive. While I am sure it works similarly elsewhere it is just so obvious there. Apparently, they must not think much of our intelligence since they continue to propogate the system. Worse, nothing is done about it.
