Bucking the trend in D3 football, Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR announced the approval of their Bd of Trustees to reinstate their football program as soon as the 2010 season. (They dropped it back in the 80’s)

They will compete in the Northwest Conference as they do in other sports.

To Jim Donovan,

I agree with what Stephan Tsai wrote in yesterday’s blog relating to why Coach Mike Trapasso should have received a more worthier contract extension than the one year rollover.

And seemingly everyone else thinks so, too. For the argument is that a one year rollover , as Stephan alluded to, “doesn’t help recruiting or provide stability”. And he goes on to write that his tenure wasn’t extended, it was prolonged. And I agree.

More so the perception of a one year rollover how I’m seeing it looks like you’re putting Coach Mike Trapasso on probation. And he shouldn’t be, especially seeing how the baseball team has a nice wind in it’s sails, so to speak.

When considering all the good versus all the bad a one year rollover is like a slap in the face to Coach Mike Trapasso . And quite frankly it’s an a ala Herman Frazier kind of thinking, for if you’d open your eyes and look what Coach Mike Trapasso is trying to build and accomplish you should realize, too, that a one year rollover is so deflating.

Furthermore when you focus on how Coach Mike Trapasso fulfills all the criterias of having his teams being competitive, players graduating, players being good citizens and seeing higher attendance figures at the box office then it stands to reason that Coach Mike Trapasso is fulfilling his tenure.

In some circles a similar performance by a coach would get a nice pat on the back, especially when you weigh all the good. But here you give the coach a one year rollover, which to me looks so connotative like the coach’s future, mainly how the team performs next year hinges on if the coach we’ll be retained. Or let go. And how I see it Coach Mike Trapasso is more deserving of this type of pressure.

For if you look at the aforementioned criterias the baseball team has certainly been competitive (nationally ranked at one time), the APR is 991/1000, players having been staying out of trouble and this year’s attendance hit a 12 year high of averaging nearly 3000 fans a game.

This all good, and aside from a few more W’s what more can you ask for?

And a few seasons ago, notably 2006, he was National Coach of the year.

With everything going in the right direction for the baseball team, especially this flame the fans have adopted and the renewed interests and excitement in the program wouldn’t it have behooved you to have rewarded the coach a three year contract, where it shows the supporters of the program and incoming recruits that the coach is our man. For he should undoubtedly be…and in view of everything Coach Trapasso should be highly esteemed than to peddle a one year roller to the coach. This is not right, Jim Donovan.

Can’t second- guess JD, I’m sure there are lots of behind the scenes things going on that may have been in play during the contract negotiations with Coach Trap. I’m glad he’s here for at least another year, tho. The BaseBows are filling the stands and that is very important too.

Mike Barwis heads into his 2nd year as Woverine S&C coach. He has already created legacy at A2 and is among the top 5 S&C coaches in college athletics.
Before Rich Rodriguez bought a house near his new job he secured a committment from Barwis to follow him to A2.

Read to understand and grasp an idea of what a football factory produces. Naturally, these teams have money, but programs such as Boise State makes efficient with what they do have and has nearly perfect committment from their players to remain on campus to participate in the program’s eight-week cycle.

Liz, have u seen Trent Allianic play? Great to have Kauai on our roster, they breed tough kids out there.

In regards to Greg Alexander and speed–be mindful that a QB may not have vertcal speed but is judged by his pocket-quickness and instincts. Colt had an uncanny sense of “feeling” pressure and an internal-clock that enabled him to make moves instinctively to avoid sacks or to release the ball a split-sec before being hit…. I believe it was the proverbial 3-sec clock he learned from playing baseball.

Alexander is Alexander and having said that Greg has accumulated precious game time which will help to internalize his play. I saw it coming by his 3rd start.
There are prolly a dozen mental checkoffs he has to make before and during a play. That is a conservative number.
Alexander is developing his pocket-play and is still a work-in-progress but much more along in his development.
If our OL jells Greg will be OK.
Right now–we want Alexander to continue growing and to max on his potential–I believe he will.

The tragic lesson we have learned at UH is not the realization of the need for a “great” coach, but rather, the the people-in-the-system that are assembled to select and the process that is applied to find that “great” coach.
When you can make efficient the system that produces coaches, you can expect the same from its product.

It would be great if Nate could help the Warriors during the offseason and/or during the season! The Warriors’ running game and pass protection hasn’t been the same since both he and Reagan finished their careers at UH.

Notre Dame fired Willingham in 2004…and he apparently has still be getting paid by them. In fact, his pay from Notre Dame is more than Charlie Weis’ base salary!

The school paid Willingham $650,000 from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008, the third straight year they’ve paid him that sum since his firing.

It also left the former coach, who has since been fired by the University of Washington, as the second-highest paid employee on Notre Dame’s payroll who is not an officer, director or trustee. The numbers came from the school’s latest Form 990 federal tax form, which was obtained by The Journal Gazette on Wednesday.

And, for the third straight year, Willingham’s compensation is higher than the base salary of current head coach Charlie Weis.

Charlie Weis took a pay cut after a bad year in 2007.

What is known is that Notre Dame paid Weis less in base salary in the ’07-’08 fiscal year than it did in ’06-’07, when it paid him a combined package of $716,277, including $598,000 in base salary.

Could UH use its family connection to see if this recruit would be interested in the Warriors? This guy could be a difference-maker, and he’s had two cousins play for UH.

The 15-year-old football standout who made his varsity debut at age 13 recently posted the highest SPARQ Rating of the more than 1,500 athletes at the Nike Baltimore Combine.

Connor’s older brother played two years of junior college baseball, and the Crowells had cousins — one boy, one girl — who played baseball and softball, respectively, at the University of Hawaii.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound sophomore ran the fastest shuttle time (4.01), surprising even himself, in posting his top SPARQ Rating (121.02).

“I wasn’t expecting to put those kind of numbers up,” Crowell said. “I had been working on my 40 [yard dash] the past couple months, but I didn’t expect to run all those [times].”

In addition to his shuttle, Crowell ran a 4.55 40-yard dash, leapt 32.7 inches in the vertical jump and had a kneeling power ball toss of 38 feet, 5 inches.

That performance, along with his play on the field last season, has major college coaches taking note.

I see Greg “having fun” and going for it in his own way. He has the calmness and power of a big guy – while Shane, for example, strikes me as being the in-yo-face, cocky guy… both different but good qualities that can rally a team around them.

Eh, Ralph! Good job. Mediocrity spells “I have a job”. As Larry Price likes to say, mediocre people always think they are trying their best. That’s why Hawaii finished 7th out ot 9 WAC teams in the recent WAC commisioner’s trophy which includes 19 sports. Good job Donovan. The women’s basketball coaching job is a joke. We’ve already lost one if not two recruiting years. Trapasso needs to find someone who can coach pitchers because I don’t think Konishi can do it. All I see is him in the dugout sitting down and being a slob. Find a guy even a consultant
or somebody who can teach the pitchers to throw an effective change up. UH pitchers can’t throw the heat so they have to change speeds effectively to get people out. It’s basic. Teach somebody to throw a sinker too. My goodness. If they keep doing the same things over and over again they might as well drink Coors like and say “they are what they think they are”. On another note, congratulations to the women’s polo team for making it to the final four. I’m sure that got us very excited!!!! Just being a disgusted UH fan. That’s why I’m glad football is coming soon so that we can hit some people and feel good again, at least until we start losing again.

I wonder how many times those people pushed the button that sent 10 votes at once?

AT&T, one of the biggest corporate sponsors of “American Idol,” might have influenced the outcome of this year’s competition by providing phones for free text-messaging services and lessons in casting blocks of votes at parties organized by fans of Kris Allen, the Arkansas singer who was the winner of the show last week.

Representatives of AT&T, whose mobile phone network is the only one that can be used to cast “American Idol” votes via text message, provided the free text-messaging services at two parties in Arkansas after the final performance episode of “American Idol” last week, according to the company and people at the events.

There appear to have been no similar efforts to provide free texting services to supporters of Adam Lambert, who finished as the runner-up to Mr. Allen.

Representatives of AT&T helped fans of Mr. Allen at the two Arkansas events by providing instructions on how to send 10 or more text messages at the press of a single button, known as power texts. Power texts have an exponentially greater effect on voting than do single text messages or calls to the show’s toll-free phone lines. The efforts appear to run afoul of “American Idol” voting rules in two ways. New England signed a LB today so Pisa doesn’t seem to be an option for them anymore. I’ve read speculation that Lennon got a much smaller contract than Pisa was asking for, but I haven’t seen that confirmed yet.

The agreement with Lenon likely takes the Patriots out of the mix for Pisa Tinoisamoa, a free agent who visited with the club Tuesday

So, it looks like Pisa will choose between the Bills and the Bears.

Unless a new suitor comes into play for Pisa Tinoisamoa, it looks like the veteran linebacker will choose between the Bears and Buffalo Bills.

That leaves the Bills and Bears to wrangle over a player both teams want to plug in at strong-side linebacker. The Bears would seem to have an edge simply because Tinoisamoa played for Lovie Smith and Bob Babich as a rookie for the Rams in 2003. Tinoisamoa seemed at ease visiting with coaches and players alike during the OTA at Halas Hall last Wednesday. If the Bears can sign him in the next few days, he will be available to participate in 12 of the 14 OTA’s, which would give him a good crash course on the defense in advance of training camp.

8-10 that would seem to be semi-finalists if you ask me.

Bonvicini could rival Trakh as a coach marvel…She ran a powerhouse at Long Beach State before going to Arizona and Arizona can’t keep up with the California schools in the Pac 10, same as their fb program..

Recruiting locally also saves the Athletic Department money since in-state tuition is so much cheaper. It also saves on the recruiting budget.

Plus, since recruits generally want to stay near home, UH has an advantage with local recruits instead of fighting an uphill battle for mainland recruits. Any sport where Hawaii high schools produce many D-IA recruits should have local recruits as a priority for UH…any coach that doesn’t see that really is missing out on a major factor for success. This is especially important for baseball, where the recruit’s family must cover the part that the partial scholarship doesn’t cover.

Yesterday you wrote and inferred that Coach Jones is foremost a businessman and maybe his motivation are the Ben Franklins in leaving UH. And I disagree, for he has often said that he could have stayed in the NFL at a higher pay than taking the UH job. This is a common, yet redundant argument that everyone says. But it’s true. What’s further from the truth is he greed for money.

What quenches his thirst for life, I’m thinking, is being proclaimed as the architect of the run and shoot. And taking football reclamation projects , like he did at UH, and like what he’s trying to do at SMU and building the teams into respectable programs.

The residual effects of building teams from scratch and showcasing his run and shoot offense on the college level has garnered the coach a lot of praiseworthiness. And this is more rewarding to him than money. It sates his ego, and I’m saying this in a good way.

Replicating what he did at UH at SMU would garner the coach further lavishness. And further enhancing of his ego, and, again, I’m saying this in a good way.

And this is what he wants, more so than the Ben Franklins. The SMU job opening is nirvana to him because if he achieves successes there he would definitely leave a favorable impression on the college scene, which could really define his legacy as a college football coach. And this is what he wants people to remember him for doing.

On the surface it’s easy to cast aspersion at the coach because there’s such a large ammounts of money involved, but I think it’s the dangling of the SMU job that was enticing to him than the dangling of the monies.

Let’s face it, in 1999, the run n shoot was at the cutting edge of college football and its mentors wore the sacred cloth.

Look closely at the PAC 10, too. Stoops saved his job by hiring a TT WR coach to run his O.

We may have the same O-line, but they are a year older, a year wiser and a year stronger. And being a year stronger makes a pretty big difference. Being a year more experienced does to. The Seniors on the opposite side of the field that gave them grief last year are gone. With a more veteran line coach, a year of strength conditioning, and greater familiarity with what needs to be done, I expect to see a vastly improved O-line.

Offensively, I see our Warriors as capable of scoring against any team next season. And scoring enough to win. The question will be if our Defense can get the ball back for the Offense to make enough of a difference in the Win column. Will the defense be able to stop the running game on 3rd and short?

Ron Lee is as good as they come.
As a Christian, as a son, as a father, as a brother, as a coach and as a friend.
If he were cloned, we would have world peace and American football would be played by the Taliban in the Wahhabi Sunni Football Conference.

Coach Lee has to remind fokz as a stand-in for John Wayne.
He was the singer who warmed-up the crowd for Sinatra.
The comic who followed Rickles in Vegas after everyone left at 3 am.
The coach who sat in the box and spotted for JJ.
The guy who dotted the “i” and crossed the “t” but never wrote the script….until now.

We all want Coach Lee to succeed and following an offensive act like JJ’s isnt the easiest way to win quick affection. But Coach Ron has hops as they say in the football network and no one is more deserving of a chance to prove it.
He has a stellar group of WRs returning along with a seasoned QB and a bud by the name of Gordie Shaw that will watch his back. He mentored Stuzz and u can bet had something to say about the Rolo aquisition.
So, there it is, the table is set.

It’s time for Ron Lee to shine.

All I gotta say is this selection junk is full of balony. Someone needs to take the blame for this one and it might just have to be JD.

What kind of finalist list fluctuates this much. I don’t know but this hire better be very good or else there will be no confidence put into our hiring process ever again. People will always be hesitant when hearing about hirings of new coaches. We will see.

Mrs A-House always gets mad at me when I criticize what I receive versus what’s shown on the ad – tv or poster!

I believe it’s an intentional act to defraud the buying public. What grounds do they stand on for cheating us into thinking we will get what we see on tv?

On Food Network program, they were showing how the “product” was being prepared for the “shoot” – it took a specialists ( artist and marketing ) to select the right pieces and put it together so the final product will look so inviting that us suckers spend our $$$ for their food.

I still like JJ. Following him on Twitter. He still loves Hawaii and says nice things about Hawaii all the time. He’s also a believer. I like that too. I wish him well.

The coaches already have all types of oddities in their ballots, as they tried to get revenge on rivals or boost the ratings of teams in their conference or where their friend’s coached. That was with the knowledge that their final ballots would be made public…for some reason, they will keep the votes a secret again and I hate to think about the potential abuses of the system now.

The final regular-season ballots in the USA TODAY Coaches’ Poll will no longer be made public beginning with the 2010 football season, the American Football Coaches Association announced Wednesday, a decision that surprised some coaches.

Wow, I just finished reading comments from other boards and the other news papers concerning the subject of UH baseball and the future of Coach Trapasso and I was surprised at how everyone has the coach under the microscope. And scrutinizing him unfavorably, including another renowned columnists saying basically it should have been a time for UH to be looking for a new baseball coach.

And, granted, maybe they’re all correct in their assessment. And maybe they’re not. For, I’m guessing vociferous fans, bloggers and even that columnist are allowed to emit their pent up emotions of living through eight year’s worth of mediocrity shown by the baseball team. And they’ve surely have written some denigrating things about the coach . For it’s their prerogative. And choosing.

But I think it’s unfair and unjust.

And I’ll stand apart from them, and stand in Coach Trapasso’s corner.

And hear me out on this one as impart my reasoning.

What’s overlooked and should be mentioned is the competitiveness of the coaches in the WAC, whose records and longevity at their respective schools is very telling of the types of coaches Coach Trapasso is up against, too. And how I see it the skippers of the other teams– I’d venture to say probably grade out at the upper top of the scale in coaching ability. Of which, yes, I know shouldn’t be an excuse for Coach Trapasso. But orchestrating the team through these last eight years, sometimes with lack of talent. And against pretty good coaches has brought mediocrity. But to think that the cure all to all of these problems is finding another coach I don’t agree with.

San Jose State- Sam Piraro (685-520-6 in 21 seasons)

Fresno State-Mike Batesole (7 seasons, one NCAA title, did an excellent job at Northridge)

Louisiana Tech-Wade Simoneaux (7 seasons)

New Mexico State-Rocky Ward (10 seasons, 2002 and 2003 NCAA tournament appearance, 254 wins)

Nevada- Gary Powers has accomplished in his 26 years of directing the team is take four Wolf Pack teams to NCAA Regional appearances in 1994, 1997, 1999 and 2000, win over 750 games

Sacramento State-One of the West Coast’s longest tenured coaches, Sacramento State graduate John Smith continues his quest to build Hornet baseball into a major Division I power entering his 30th year. 800 wins.

And Coach Trapasso has been right up there in the mix. Count two WAC coach of the year awards, and an NCAA Coach of the Year award in his nine years. And a 2006 Regional appearance. I’d say not bad, certainly not the end of the world. Or wishing for the coaches demise and departure.

His personal accolades have been stellar, and reflects that he’s a great coach.

Wishfully, my hopes and yearnings is to see the team do better just like everyone else that roots for the UH baseball team. But I think we should grant the coach additional time. And have patience.

Looking at a 50% winning ratio after eight years. And looking at the mandates that Coach Trapasso has accomplished, including fund raising for the team are all things that weigh in his favor. And, yes, I know it could be better. But it not all that bad.

With a sudden surge of discontent, especially from the other columnist from the other paper leading the cheer is beyond logic. But, again, that’s their prerogative.

And my greatest wish is that people would be pragmatic when looking at the UH baseball program. And realize that the eight year orbit they’re on reflects, too, on the pool of D-1 baseball talent coming out of the state of Hawaii.

Recruiting locally when the coach is handicapped at what D-1 baseball talent there’s available. And then trying to compose a team with what’s available against some of collegiate baseballs best coaches from the WAC is a formidable job for anyone.

In closing what gets my ire is the disparagingly types of remarks directed at the coach. And, if, roysan16 is the only standing in his corner through this type of assassination, seemingly, the coach is going through then so be it. But I do so in thinking independently and with a clear mind and never influenced on how others think. This time, I’ll reiterate, Coach Trapasso was deserving of a 3 year contract instead of a rollover. And all the conjuncture of reading other sites and other site’s newspapers of wishing for a new coach is sad full.

You may want to avoid other boards and, well, at least other comments sections, both in other papers AND this paper. The Warrior Beat community is an oasis of ohana and consistent sanity. And that’s _before_ making direct comparisons to certain spots on the Internet.

the tabloid reports that a name for the wbb vacancy has been forwarded to JD last night…should we expect an announcement today…considering the people on the committee, how can they screw up the list of the final finalist, unless there was a lot of horse trading after the fact and names were added to satisfy the chosen few…

Okay last one before I row into bed to milk the cow…in my dreams that is…

The buzz around UH athletics would be anticipatory if it were on the eve of an important game. Or a special announcement. And therefore it would be a welcoming sound.

But in this case, presently, the buzz it’s not pleasing because it comes with so much innuendo within what’s going on up there within the department this past week. And this adverse publicity may not be so endearing to the supporters of the program.

What awaits, half jokingly, is an artist’s rendering of a caricature of donkeys running the department with real life likeness of the ones whom actually do.

Yes, I know, to some, it’s not funny. And probably mean spirited but it just seems everything that’s emanating from the UH athletic department has people second guessing. And this isn’t good at all.

My only hope is that they, meaning JD and company, come up with the antidote for doing things correctly in the future. Whereas, consequently, we’d be spared of second guessing his decisions.

I would be interested to find out why and how the wbb “finalists” were selected. Not the PC answer but the plain-old truth. The shenanigans in hiring continue. Amazing how well the good-old-boys network continues to thrive. While I am sure it works similarly elsewhere it is just so obvious there. Apparently, they must not think much of our intelligence since they continue to propogate the system. Worse, nothing is done about it.
