Still ticking

It’s been pretty surreal entering a new newsroom. But the old Star-Bulletin guys have been really welcoming, especially Paul Arnett, Dave Reardon, Paul Honda, and the desk guys. And I’m reunited with some of my old UH pals — Nadine Kam, George Lee, Dennis Oda, Lucy Oda, etc.

Sounds like there’s going to be a strong push to have a lot of UH football coverage. I’ll be the football beat guy, but Jason Kaneshiro, Billy Hull, “Ferd” Lewis and Reardon will be contributing regularly. There also will be two columnists — “Ferd” and Reardon — at every game.

And, of course, the blog will be an important part of the new newspaper.

There’s still sadness that many of my Advertiser family aren’t part of this. Dayton Morinaga, Stacy Kaneshiro, Leila Wai, Kyle Sakamoto, Stanley Lee, Kalani Takase, Brandon Masuoka, Wes Nakama, Clyde Mizumoto, Steve Kimura, Paul Carvalho, Stan Pusieski, and Da Clerks  will be missed. Always.

I’m smelling chili peppers, so I’d better find some work to do.

Ran into former UH defensive tackle Michael Lafaele, who now is working for a marketing company. Lafaele and UH director of player personnel George Lumpkin will be conducting a Christian football camp. It will be three days and two nights, beginning July 1, and will be held at Waipahu High School. Call (808) 206-0312 for details.

David Veikune is being praised for his progress this offseason. Hopefully he can earn a spot in the rotation at inside LB.

“I believe that David’s really benefited well from some opportunities that have been created at the inside linebacker spot without having D’Qwell [Jackson] here,” said Mangini. “ He’s gotten quite a few reps and I think he’s done a nice job.”

  5. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2010 4:24 am

    OK, I’m disoriented.
It appears that the blog is on both the old site and the new site.

    Good Morning Tsaiko Family!

ST, where ever you are, we’ll find you!!!! 🙂

  10. Ronnie June 8, 2010 4:49 am

If Scott is in charge of the Online stuff, does that mean he can fix the blog format/template like he did the last time the Advertiser changed blog software?

  11. Pomai June 8, 2010 4:57 am

I think this is where I am suppose to be?? (holding hand up)Is this the right room?

  12. Garret June 8, 2010 5:01 am

The MWC’s commissioner told their University Presidents to be prepared to have a quick meeting at any time to decide on expansion.

The call will happen before July 1, the deadline for Boise State to announce a move to the Mountain West in 2011-12 without incurring additional penalties from the WAC.

Thompson told the presidents his next phone call to them will be important. They should prepare their assistants to clear a half-hour block on little notice, he said.

  13. Garret June 8, 2010 5:02 am

BSU may not want to go to the MWC if they get raided:

Kustra also will have a keen eye on conference developments. He was prepared to accept a Mountain West invitation Monday, he said, but his stance could change if the league is raided.

  14. Ronnie June 8, 2010 5:03 am

I HOPE Scott can make changes…. The font of this template is going to be a “challenge” for me to read…

  15. Pomai June 8, 2010 5:05 am

Ronnie it looks like the same as the old one to me, except the names are a different font.

  16. Garret June 8, 2010 5:06 am

BSU’s President gave a funny analogy to their annual attempt at getting into the MWC.

“I’m reminded of Charlie Brown every year getting his football out and Lucy sets it up and reassures him this is the year she’s not going to pull it away and, of course, she does,” Boise State president Bob Kustra said Monday evening.

  17. Pomai June 8, 2010 5:06 am

Actual the total white background looks better to me.

  18. Garret June 8, 2010 5:07 am

The MWC will discuss expansion later this month.

Thompson said the league would consider expansion again before the end of the month, in recognition of Boise State’s July 1 deadline to exit the WAC without additional penalty.

  19. expat June 8, 2010 5:08 am

Boise State is starting to sound pathetic.

  31. duffer June 8, 2010 5:33 am

    Whoa al, insomia??????????????

  32. Garret June 8, 2010 5:33 am

Beating BSU would be the best thing for the WAC teams to do–then their value for conference expansion goes down and other WAC teams can get the prestige that BSU has now. Trouble is, WAC teams try every year to beat BSU…and don’t succeed often.

  33. Scott Morifuji June 8, 2010 5:33 am

  45. Garret June 8, 2010 6:02 am

Notre Dame may hold the key for the whole conference expansion situation.

If Notre Dame moves into the Big Ten, and that conference closes ranks at 12 schools, college athletics would take a deep breath, take some Maalox and try to repair whatever damage has been done to the relationships with its co-workers.

If Notre Dame remains independent, it could be the first step towards complete upheaval.

The worst-case scenario for Nebraska would be to say no thanks to the Big 12, allow the Big 12 South schools to start negotiating with the Pac-10, only to see Notre Dame ultimately change its mind, land in the Big Ten, and leave Nebraska with the not-so-unthinkable scenario of joining Missouri, Colorado, Kansas and Kansas State in the Mountain West.

The Mountain West’s decision to stand pat Monday was telling. Why make a commitment to Boise State right now, when that league, which is desperately trying to become a BCS conference, can wait a week and see if there are bigger trophies to be had.

  46. d1島 June 8, 2010 6:10 am

    Great Morning All!

So according to Scott it’s the same playhouse, just a different paint job?

  47. Pomai June 8, 2010 6:17 am

It’s kind of funny (not) that the NCAA doesn’t want student athlete’s to make money off their sports ability but yet it’s ok for all the big conferences to make billions off the student athlete’s back. 🙁

  48. whitey June 8, 2010 6:17 am

    Have a terrific day erryboddy!

    HiHo….

  57. Garret June 8, 2010 6:35 am

    Pomai,

You know what has been one of the things that has pushed schools to try to maximize their Athletic Department revenue? Title IX. Schools had to add a bunch of women’s sports, which has opened up great opportunities and given us wonderful stories such as the Wahine softball team. However, women’s sports lose a *lot* of money for every D-IA school.

Where is that money supposed to come from? Every school was told they had to add a lot of women’s sports if they wanted to keep playing football, but the courts or the government aren’t providing the money to subsidize them. That forced every D-IA school to significantly increase the money they brought in!

We simply *cannot* have things both ways. We cannot criticize schools for increasing Athletic Department revenues significantly when we expect them to support a lot of sports that lose money. Even men’s sports lose money–baseball loses a LOT of money, men’s volleyball loses money (UH’s audited figures even shows that UH loses money on men’s volleyball). If we want to keep those sports also, the money has to come from somewhere!

Pac-10 schools in the past discussed how they might have to cut men’s volleyball because they couldn’t afford to subsidize it anymore. That would also allow them to cut a women’s sport at many schools. Cal took a *bus* when their football team played at UCLA last season. Some Pac-10 schools are lost $5 million to $10 million last year. They *need* more money or they will cut sports. If a few Pac-10 schools cut men’s volleyball, the sport will not have enough schools to qualify as an NCAA sport anymore. There is a reality that the Pac-10 needs a lot more money because their schools are getting their budgets cut significantly due to the economy. Their cuts could end up hurting UH also.

Without a lot more money coming from somewhere, sports like women’s softball could cease to exist in 10 years. Every school and conference is looking out for themselves to avoid having to make painful cuts like that. Some schools will NOT succeed at it. I hope and pray that UH is not left behind.

  58. Pomai June 8, 2010 6:44 am

Garret I understand what your saying, but don’t you think they(big 6) are making a lot more money than just to cover the losing sport programs? Maybe I’m wrong but it appears of the surface that greed over rides whats good for the student athlete. Maybe I’m just not seeing the big picture.

  59. Stretch June 8, 2010 6:45 am

I hope the Tiser staff that weren’t invited to join the HSA will find something fulfilling in the near future.

Had someone complain about his name being spelled incorrectly on his badge every year for a film festival. He asked why that kept happening. The graphic designer responded that she only copies and pastes from the staff page on our intranet; she doesn’t proof. Ends up the genius had entered his own info wrong when he first set up his staff profile. He corrected it that night.

(press on my name for the link..no worries, no virus, )

New blog. New beginnings. Keyboard works, ran a test post, S key works, post was accepted, So here we go. Oh I forgot, hi.

I just listened to yesterday’s end of the year WAC Commissioner’s teleconference.

During the 34 minute teleconference with the media, Karl Benson answered questions poised at him from the media. Naturally most of the questions centered around the “what ifs” about conference shakeups and the trickle down effect it would have on the WAC.

“If Boise leaves for the MWC,” the commissioner said. “We’ll have to move on.”

“Right now there’s a lot of moving parts,” the commissioner let on (or he basically said). “We’ll have to wait and see what our next moves are when the picture gets clearer.”

The media taking part in the teleconference, which basically was a 34 minute question and answer period with the commissioner, were asking similarly the same type of questions: What teams are you looking at to replace Boise? Are you looking at expanding to 12 teams? What are the penalties to Boise if they do decide to leave after July 1? What were the demeanors and body languages of the school’s president and athletic directors at the recent meeting with the commissioner in Las Vegas? What was the commissioners thoughts of teams making it to BCS Bowls, or playing on the biggest platforms, being rewarded with a biggest pieces of the pie (Dave’s question)? New schools coming in, how soon? New schools (FCS) coming in are there hardships to other WAC teams in the first couple of years?

My impression of the teleconference is that the commissioner didn’t what to get into *specifics* at this time publically of which teams that the league is courting if their is a fallout to the WAC when all the dominoes fall. It seemed (IMO) that the commissioner by default has to have a wait and see approach. Plus he know everything has to be finalized by the higher ups, so it would be premature on his part to speculate. Or to say this is what he wants to do. He did say that privately and behind closed doors that his meetings with the schools presidents and athletic directors that they have openly discussed different scenarios.

“The WAC has a storied history,” Benson eagerly said. “We’ll get through this, other teams in the WAC have to step up.”

I’m hoping that what he says, proves true, especially for UH. And there’s a continuation of adding to the WAC’s storied history. But whatever happens be done with already. Leave, leave. Stay, stay. I don’t want to have this being carried on every year, where the WAC fate, or UH’s fate, or Boise leaving, is up in the air. Get it settled once in for all.

  206. Colomaohana June 8, 2010 10:24 am

    Thoughts anyone???

Oh look at this, karma has a funny way of working things out yeah?

Smith filed his suit soon after national letter of intent day in February 2008.

Smith later attended PSU in 2008-09 but as a walk-on. He is now at Whittier (Calif.) College but not playing football due to an injury.

  212. NorthShoreFan June 8, 2010 10:33 am

LizK great news on baby Gryphon!

  213. Garret June 8, 2010 10:34 am

    Garret,

My feel is what is in the best interest of UH now is,

    1. Major restructuring of the conferences in a way that fractures the MWC, or

    2. Major rumors that the MWC will be fractured due to restructuring of the BCS conferences with would happen this year.

    3. Worse thing that could happen is the rumors disappear or Notre Dame joins the Big 10 ending all conference restructuring, which means the WAC loses Bosie and possibly LaTech.

    Your comments?

    Old Diver,

I agree with your points. I would add that if #3 occurs, the MWC might need to add 2 more teams to get to 12 teams…and that could result in more losses to the WAC (Fresno and Nevada will be doing all they can to get those spots). If the WAC loses BSU, La Tech, Nevada, and Fresno, the WAC will not be considered a conference anymore and can lose all bowl affiliations, TV contracts, basketball tournament spots, etc.

  214. Garret June 8, 2010 10:35 am

Colorado’s Board of Regents are meeting about the Pac-10 today.

The University of Colorado’s Board of Regents will meet in secret tonight to receive legal advice about the Boulder campus’s possible switch from the Big 12 conference to the Pac-10, sources told the Camera.

  215. Colomaohana June 8, 2010 10:36 am

    Good news, Liz!

  216. Curt June 8, 2010 10:38 am

And da Beat goes on…and da Beat goes on.

  217. Garret June 8, 2010 10:39 am

The Chancellor for Kansas asked Nebraska to stay in the Big 12…for Kansas’ sake.

Kansas chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little urged her Nebraska counterpart Monday to remain in the Big 12 and help avoid a potential calamity for the Jayhawks.

Gray-Little said she made sure that Perlman knew where she stood.

“I have not finished my conversations for the day. I intend if not today in the next two days to talk to the presidents and chancellors of other institutions as well,” she said.

  218. homey ℞ June 8, 2010 10:39 am

Sheesh, not much of a secret when others know they are meeting tonight…LOL

  219. madeinhawaii June 8, 2010 10:40 am

If the Big 12 dissolves, does that make the MWC an AQ qualifier?

  220. Garret June 8, 2010 10:40 am

Kansas and Kansas State are unhappy that men’s basketball doesn’t seem to mean anything for conference realignment…only football matters.

What this says about KU basketball is especially frightening: The storied program somehow is not significant enough to elevate the Jayhawks, much less both schools, into the next dimension of college athletics riches.

Check out the scoreboard. Kansas basketball — coming off a season in which it ranked first nationally, three years removed from a national championship, by far the Big 12’s greatest team by championship banners and on the short list of nationally significant programs — is not part of the Big Ten or Pacific-10 expansion speculation.

Baylor football — coming off a season in which it finished last in the South Division for the 13th time in 14 years, has never been to a bowl game as a Big 12 member, and its collective conference record of 14-98 is by far the worst in league history — gets support as a Pac-10 expansion team.

  221. Garret June 8, 2010 10:41 am

    madeinhawaii,

The AQ criteria says that the top 6 conferences get AQ spots automatically. If there is no Big 12, then the MWC is an AQ conference!

  222. Garret June 8, 2010 10:43 am

    homey,

Newspapers have excellent sources, so it is hard for any Board of Regents to meet secretly when everybody is being watched so closely in times like this.

  223. Garret June 8, 2010 10:45 am

It appears that one reason David Veikune is doing so well this offseason with Cleveland is that he’s lost more than 20 pounds.

Veikune waddled to the scale near the shower area of the locker room last fall and when the dial stopped spinning it registered he weighed 270 pounds. He looked like the guy on the midnight shift at the donut shop whose idea of three square meals a day were glazed, powdered and custard-filled.

This spring, Veikune not only looks like a football player — he is moving like one. He is in the crowded but unsettled pack fighting for playing time at inside linebacker. He has dropped almost 20 pounds and worked his butt off in the offseason to become stronger.

“I’m definitely in better shape,” Veikune said after practice on Monday. “Any rookie going through the combine, your pro day and all those things your body never rests. Then you come in here and get going right away. Now I’m in the low 250s. Last year I was way too heavy.”

  224. Garret June 8, 2010 10:46 am

Both of Cleveland’s ILB starters at the start of last season are missing OTAs, so Veikune is getting a lot of reps.

Last year, the opening-day starters were D’Qwell Jackson and Eric Barton. Both were injured during the first half of the season. David Bowens started the final nine games and Jason Trusnik the final six inside.

Jackson, unhappy the Browns won’t budge from their one-year contract tender, has boycotted the OTAs and is threatening to skip the mandatory minicamp beginning Thursday. Barton is not practicing because he is recovering from neck surgery. Bowens is in his 12th season, so Mangini isn’t about to wear him out in June.

The more the others are on the sideline, the more practice time Veikune is getting.

  225. jojo ® June 8, 2010 10:48 am

    That’s great Liz!

    Enjoy your trip!

  226. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2010 10:59 am

Back to business, when did the WAC become the developmental league for the Mountain West?
I think it’s time the WAC gets proactive. It needs to develop its own expansion plan. That means recruiting UNLV and San Diego State.
    I also would target Wyoming.
Hawaii might be isolated by water, but Wyoming is isolated, too. And it does not have a significant television market. What it has is good facilities. Wyoming will be left behind when the conferences shift again. Target the weak, I say.

Mahalo for remembering Gryphon today and in the future! Scary times for newish parents.

  237. LizKauai (iPhone) June 8, 2010 11:16 am

#228- I agree. The WAC leadership needs to put the WAC FIRST on it’s list of priorities. The best defense is a great offense.
With the rise of the baseball and softball teams in post season play this year, Hawaii is helping create more respect. It would be great to see the WAC itself create some marketing mileage from these accomplishments!

Re-Tomorrow’s announcement of APR Progress Rate Announcement

Is it hold it your breath time for UH athletics , maybe the baseball team?

We’ll see. The last report indicates that the baseball team was below a 925 (922) and was penalized.

    Here’s a link to UH’s last report dated 5/01/09
    http://web1.ncaa.org/app_data/apr2008/277_2008_apr.pdf

Copied from the Knight Commision’s web site

The NCAA will release the latest round of Division I Academic Progress Rates on Wednesday, June 9.

Data released will include scores and any penalties for all sports teams at 332 Division I colleges and universities.

The data will be made available to national media at 1 p.m. Eastern with an embargo of 2 p.m. Eastern, when the data will be made public via the NCAA website.

The NCAA will hold a national telephonic press conference to discuss the latest APR figures at 2 p.m. Eastern on June 9. Speakers will include NCAA Interim President Jim Isch; Walter Harrison, president of the University of Hartford and chair of the NCAA Committee on Academic Performance; and select NCAA staff members.

The Academic Progress Rate is a real-time measure of eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team.

An APR score of 925 (out of 1,000) is the minimum level of academic success; teams scoring below 925 can lose scholarships and face other sanctions over time, including bans on postseason play.

The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years.

  264. Kazz June 8, 2010 11:57 am

One thing that MUST be a legitimate concern for all schools in the WAC are the incoming or freshman or sophmore student athletes that are paying attention to these conference shift rumors.

If I were an incoming high school recruit or a current UH student athlete that is a freshman or a sophomore, I’d be concerned about the potential of the WAC getting “dumbed down”.

If these shifts start ACTUALLY happening, I wouldn’t be surprised to see or read about transfer requests all around the country and WORST here at UH.

Sheesh, not much of a secret when others know they are meeting tonight…LOL

    homey,

The Denver Post *really* isn’t helping to keep the meeting secret. This is what they wrote today:

Regents are holding the “special” meeting tonight at 5 p.m. in executive session to “discuss a specific legal matter.” The board is meeting at 1800 Grant St. in Denver.

How secret is a meeting when the newspaper publishes the time and address?

  327. Garret June 8, 2010 1:49 pm

It looks like Colorado will be the first domino to fall…they apparently will leave the Big 12 as early as tomorrow! The Pac-10 had 2 scenarios: Add the 6 from the Big 12 or add Colorado and Utah…either way, Colorado is apparently leaving the Big 12.

There is growing speculation from other Big 12 members that Tuesday night’s meeting among Colorado University leaders is to discuss the legality of bolting the Big 12 right now to accept an invitation from another conference, two sources told Orangebloods.com.

If the speculation is true, Colorado could be preparing to accept a bid from the Pac-10 Conference, which has targeted the Buffaloes for expansion.

The move would undercut an attempt by Baylor to sway the Texas Legislature into helping the Bears get an invite ahead of Colorado.

  328. Garret June 8, 2010 1:51 pm

The Big 12 has a $10 million exit fee and Colorado couldn’t even afford the $3 million to buy out Hawkins’ contract before this season. This is apparently what they are meeting about today.

The price to get out of the Big 12 is a $10 million buyout, and it would take a vote of nine members of the Big 12 to dissolve the league and eliminate any buyout penalties, according to one league source.

Sources say Colorado’s athletic department is not in strong financial condition, and the school doesn’t have the kind of money right now to buy its freedom.

  329. 99club June 8, 2010 1:52 pm

    Garret/homey,

    Re-Freedom and Information Act

IIRC after the Sugar Bowl, a news organization was successful in applying the freedom and information act in it’s request in finding out the names on the list in regards to UH’s traveling party.

With today’s announcement of UH settling with Smith can the freedom and information act be applied here on the specifics of what the two parties settled on?

  331. Garret June 8, 2010 1:54 pm

Could Texas A&M and Oklahoma be planning to go to the SEC instead? That could end the Pac-16 and maybe Texas will go to the Big 10 or SEC?

The latest twist on the Big Twelve realignment is that Oklahoma and Texas A&M might depart for the SEC. This from an Aggieland source. UT doesn’t have to worry about finding a place to land, but it has never been interested in the SEC, mainly for academic reasons. Only two SEC teams are members of the prestigious American Association of Universities (Florida and Vanderbilt), though other SEC schools are said to be in line (Georgia, for one). The UT academic hierarchy prefers the PAC-10, but UT does not want to be stranded without its two longtime rivals.

    Ralph,

Did you see the news on Friday that Microsoft was ending its Bing cashback program?

In a blog post, Yusuf Mehdi, Senior Vice President, wrote , “When we originally began to offer the cashback feature, it was designed to help advertisers reach you with compelling offers, and to provide a new type of shopping experience that would change user behavior and attract a bunch of new users to Bing”.

“But after a couple of years of trying, we did not see the broad adoption that we had hoped for”, he admitted.

The Cashback program will expire on July 30th at 9:00 pm PST and Microsoft will continue to provide customer support for 12 more months.

  344. Garret June 8, 2010 2:10 pm

If the Pac-16 doesn’t happen, it looks like the Pac-10 would just take Colorado and Utah. The MWC would replace Utah with BSU. That would keep things pretty stable in the western conferences, which is good…if the next round of expansion happens later, UH could be in a better position in football and men’s basketball.

  345. J-FORCE June 8, 2010 2:14 pm

Maybe it has to be one of those deals like the Knicks and Nate Robinson.
Boise State doesn’t want to be in the WAC.
So instead of waiting around for the Broncos to leave, maybe it would be better for the WAC to release the Broncos from their membership.
You wanna go? Go now. Thanks for all of your years of service.
    It’s inevitable, anyway.

  351. SteveM June 8, 2010 2:37 pm

ST — wouldn’t Boise have to leave a few $$$ on the WAC plate if they split early? Why not just attempt to add another team now?

  352. Garret June 8, 2010 2:44 pm

Cal has a much bigger Athletic Department budget deficit than UH…they need the new TV network and expansion.

For at least the past decade, intercollegiate athletics has received tens of millions of dollars from the campus–including approximately $13.5 million from the central campus in fiscal year 2008-09 alone, according to the NCAA. Despite being an auxiliary enterprise, which according to university and state policy must be financially self-reliant, Athletic Director Sandy Barbour projects the department will incur a deficit of $6.4 million by the end of this fiscal year.

    Garret,

This seems like the most plausable considering how some conferences are balking or “playing chicken” with the expansion rumors right now.

Personally, I wish for this to be true considering our position and the risk of the other athletic programs at UH that have been doing quite well but stand the risk of elimination in the worst case scenarios.

  355. Garret June 8, 2010 2:45 pm

Cal’s upper campus forgave more than $31 million in debt that their Athletic Department had in 2007! It would be nice if upper campus got rid of the $10 million deficit UH Athletics has…

In 2007, the campus forgave the department’s cumulative $31.4 million deficit, which took years to accrue.

    Kazz,

I agree wit you. If expansion is minimal in the west, the WAC and UH will stay about the same for now. That would be best for UH’s nonrevenue sports. Then hopefully UH’s football teams starts to win big and a big-money conference comes for UH.

  359. d1島 June 8, 2010 2:48 pm

    ST,

What about the $3 million the WAC will get if BSU makes a BCS game? The $6 million that a WAC team earns for making a BCS game is split evenly–$3 million for the school making the bowl, $3 million for the conference.

That $3 million and the $1+ million exit fee are reasons not to let BSU out early.

  362. d1島 June 8, 2010 2:50 pm

Then hopefully UH’s football teams starts to win big and a big-money conference comes for UH.

how soon would UH have to start “winning big”?

  363. madeinhawaii June 8, 2010 2:51 pm

    d1…

I suppose it would mean a lot of lobbying from our AD, Chancellor, UH Pres.. BOR.. Politicians to get an exemption to open the season one weekend earlier. This would make that 13th game option even more attractive as it would allow the opposing team to retain a mid-season bye week.

  364. d1島 June 8, 2010 2:52 pm

The $6 million that a WAC team earns for making a BCS game is split evenly–$3 million for the school making the bowl, $3 million for the conference.

Would it make more financial sense for UH to finish second to a BCS-bound WAC champion?

  365. madeinhawaii June 8, 2010 2:54 pm

For UH to get invited to the BCS dance, the State would have to invest big time into the school. Not just the athletic program but get those badly needed repairs done. Got to improve the overall school image.. raise tuition and activity fees, increase the athletic dept budget and bit the bullet on travel expense compensation if asked.

    Not going to happen.

To me, that’s like asking students if they accept an additional student fee or asking the public if they want to pay taxes.

Money is an issue more than ever and already some teams are on the bandwagon of telling anyone and everyone how expensive it is to fly to Hawaii. Conference affiliations put all that to rest. As Wayne Brady said to Dave Chappelle: “This isn’t an option ******, if you don’t smoke this, we got a problem”.

Imagine UH’s predicament right now of signing non-conference football opponentsto play at Aloha Stadium and multiply that by two or three and that’s not even taking into account the other sports at UH.

For some reason, Bob Coolen has had NO problems scheduling BIG name softball programs to come to play the Wahine at Manoa (i.e. Oklahoma, UW, CAL, Stanford, etc…), but then again, a lot of the power softball teams are from the PAC 10, so not too far away I guess…

  370. Garret June 8, 2010 3:00 pm

how soon would UH have to start “winning big”?

    d1shima,

The BCS evaluation period covers 4-year periods. There are always 2 periods that overlap–the current period is not good for UH (2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011), but a new evaluation period starts this year and goes over 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.

If this season and next season goes well, then UH would be more attractive to conferences. If the MWC stays at 9 teams, they might need to add 3 teams to keep their AQ status…whichever teams do well over the next 2 years could earn their AQ spots.

One thing that hasn’t been discussed in media reports is that even if the MWC becomes an AQ conference in 2012, they still need to worry about staying an AQ conference in 2014. So, they may need to add teams in 2012…they should be able to pick which WAC or C-USA teams they want if they have AQ status to offer.

  371. madeinhawaii June 8, 2010 3:01 pm

    All right! WTG Dave Shoji!!

Yep, now it’s getting harder to read.

  373. Garret June 8, 2010 3:03 pm

By the way, all conferences are asking their teams to schedule their nonconference games early in the season and leave the rest of the season for conference games. That means that UH could not fill their schedules in football, basketball, softball, baseball, etc., if UH was an independent.

  374. Garret June 8, 2010 3:06 pm

FYI: I’ve been asked to look up TV contract dollars

    MWC: $12 million per year
    C-USA: $11.3 million per year
    WAC: $4 million per year

One reason why it is hard for the WAC to poach teams from other conferences. If you look at NCAA men’s basketball success in the tournament, you see another reason why teams would lose a LOT of money by moving to the WAC.

  375. madeinhawaii June 8, 2010 3:07 pm

Except with other independent teams, I assume… not a good scenario at all.. but if no WAC, then what is left?

  376. Pessimistic June 8, 2010 3:08 pm

I see UH dropping football all together in the next 10 years. I hope it won’t happen this way, but I just don’t see the political will in Hawaii to stop it from happening A lot of people in Hawaii just don’t care about athletics, it goes all the way to the top starting from the Governor to UH administrators. You don’t even hear anything from Inouye concerning UH, but you see Orrin Hatch making sure he’s taking care of BYU/Utah.

    POSTED: 12:40 p.m. HST, Jun 08, 2010

Hawaii, which ended its season Sunday, is ranked 30th in this week’s Collegiate Baseball Top 30 poll, released today.
It is the first time the Rainbows (35-28) are ranked this year, and the first time they ended the season ranked since 1992, when they finished 11th.
Arizona State (50-8), which beat UH twice in winning the regional it hosted, remains No. 1 in the poll.

What gets me about all this talk about realignment is the fact that many of the teams discussed are only good due to their current coaches. Rutgers to the Big 10? Where were they before their current coach and where will they be after he leaves? Same for Boise. They just cut the guy’s salary after winning a BCS bowl game. Do they (Boise AD’s)think that just anybody can walk in and repeat what the previous and current coaches have done? One of the big BCS schools is going to offer the current Boise coach a huge sum of cash next year and I think the party will be over for the Broncos.

Equipment and rules discussions are fine during the regular season, but during the CWS they give the impression to the casual viewer that there is some sort of controversy going on and that some teams only got there by exploiting loop holes. That’s what ticked me off most about their commentary during our games. They should be celebrating the student athletes and their accomplishments both on and off the field.

Whoever did the interview I think has a bright future. A lot content was covered. Great questions by the interviewer. Then again perhaps Amber makes the interviewer’s job a lot easy with her bubbly personality. Some of the questions that were covered, “which sport did you like better,” “what influence did Coach Shoji have on you as an athlete,” “why made you decide on coming to Hawaii.”

STILL FEELING THE MANA OF THE WAHINE???

I encourage ALL interested parties to donate what they can to the Rainbow Wahine’s account at Koa Anuenue.org. There is a section where you can set up an online donation or set up monthly automatic deductions to their account. I have done this and experienced NO problems and 100% of all money donated is tax deductible. If you set up monthly donations, Koa Anuenue will send you a receipt at the end of the calendar year you can file for your taxes.

This account is for the program’s use ONLY and greatly assists the program in offsetting costs to their annual budget.

OR fans may send checks payable to “UH FOUNDATION”.
***Please indicate “WAHINE SOFTBALL ACCOUNT” on the memo line.***

    Mailing address is:
    UH FOUNDATION
    PO BOX 11270
    HONOLULU, HI 96828.

Koa Anuenue will mail donors receipts using the name and address indicated on your checks in the upper left hand corner or otherwise noted by the donor.

I have been donating for two years now, and it’s a worthwhile commitment. These young ladies work as hard as ANY UH student athlete and this program has had a history of winning not just in the WAC, but on a national level considering their smaller budget compared to UH football, basketball, and volleyball.

    EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS!!!!!!

Well, the news leaked out about Colorado’s meeting. They apparently weren’t getting ready to leave for the Pac-10…they were discussing their horrible APR situation. Bad, bad timing for Colorado. Kansas with their scandal with their AD right now can relate. Scholarship losses in *football* and men’s basketball!

Now, according to Orangebloods.com along with corroborating sources of our own, Colorado will announce scholarship losses in football and men’s basketball for failing to meet NCAA academic progress rate standards. Few programs get dinged so severely.

If that is the news, it couldn’t come at a worse time for Colorado or a better time for Baylor.

  478. Kazz June 8, 2010 8:15 pm

    and “boom” goes the dynamite…

  479. Garret June 8, 2010 8:16 pm

To give you an idea of how badly the Pac-10 wants Texas…

With Dodds at the top, Texas may have more influence than any other school in the country. As one Big 12 athletic director told me recently, when asked if Texas could help determine who joins the Pac-10, “I’ve heard Texas is so extremely influential, it could bring Stephen F. Austin with them if it wants.”

  480. Garret June 8, 2010 8:22 pm

Nebraska will announce by Friday that they will go to the Big 10? That would mean the Pac-10 will become the Pac-16…Colorado’s APR failure in the 2 revenue sports may cost them $20 million per year.

An executive at a Big 12 school relayed to The World-Herald on Tuesday that he expects Nebraska to become a member of the Big Ten as early as Friday.

Direct confirmation from Nebraska of a conference change for the Huskers wasn’t immediately available. Sources at two other Big 12 schools told The World-Herald that their athletic directors have instructed them to be ready by week’s end for a briefing on probable Big 12 changes.
    Advertising

Nebraska A.D. Tom Osborne offered implicit confirmation Tuesday night that the timetable on national conference realignment has been accelerated.

  481. roysan16 June 8, 2010 8:43 pm

“And everyone’s getting fat except the Western Athletic Conference.”

I just read this in an article in the LA Times. The author writes about the landscape of college football possibly changing in the future.. And then he includes this statement about the WAC, which everyone knows by now is an understatement and valid.

Also included in this article is a statement by the WAC Commissioner.

“This is wild,” WAC Commissioner Karl Benson said this week of the stakes.

    Ugh.

In my opinion the WAC school presidents need to assert themselves more and take on a greater leadership role.

    “Dave 44” discovers that:

Bob Nash is the new head coach of the Saitama Broncos in Japan.

Broncos name Nash as next head coach
By Ed Odeven, Japan Times, Tokyo
    Jun. 8

–Bob Nash has been named the Saitama Broncos’ third head coach in as many seasons, the bj-league team announced on Sunday. He accepted a one-year contract.

Terms of the contract were undisclosed.

A former NBA player with the Detroit Pistons and Kansas City Kings in the 1970s and a longtime University of Hawaii assistant coach, Nash served as the Rainbows’ head coach for the past three seasons.

He was fired after in March after the Western Athletic Conference school had a disappointing 10-20 season. Nash had a 34-56 overall record as UH’s bench boss, taking over for Riley Wallace, the Rainbows’ 20-year head coach, in 2007 after a 23-year stint as the team’s assistant coach.

In his first season as Hawaii’s head coach, Nash’s team went 11-19, followed by a 13-17 mark in 2008-09.

Nash, who turns 60 in August, was expected to be named the Osaka Evessa’s new head coach, replacing Kensaku Tennichi, who guided the team to a trio of titles in the league’s first three seasons.

Nash’s son, Bobby, a guard who played college ball at the University of Hawaii, suited up for the Shiga Lakestars in 2008-09 and for part of the 2009-10 season. He was released in early March.

The Broncos are coming off a 17-35 season under fired coach Masato Fukushima, tying the Toyama Grouses for the worst record in the Eastern Conference.

Saitama has failed to qualify for postseason play in each of the bj-league’s five seasons. In fact, the Broncos have the worst overall record (79-149, or 34.6 winning percentage) of any of the league’s six original teams since play began in the fall of 2005.

Now, Nash looks to usher in a new successful era of Broncos basketball. In a statement released by the team, Nash said Saitama’s loyal boosters are an important component of the team’s foundation. He also said the team needs to add athletic players to build a stronger roster for the coming season.

  509. Kazz June 8, 2010 10:22 pm

One of the “feel-good” stories surrounding the softball team, and there are many of them, is how this season turned out for Traci Yoshikawa in the end, on the BIG STAGE.

Throughout the season she was up and down and up and up and then down and down and then up again at the plate.

She had her big problems at 2nd base and got pulled on more than one occasion during the regular season. Yoshikawa wasn’t the fastest hands, but had power, after all, she was the FIRST Wahine I saw crush a softball over that 45-50 foot net in the outfield on a blast to left field center early in the season.

I will openly admit, her at-bats had me sweating and biting the skin off my fingers, but the young lady came to play in every game and never quit and it showed on the BIGGEST STAGE of the season.

Where we lacked in production at the top of the order, Traci Yoshikawa made sure her senior season didn’t end without a fight. A big two run homer against Missouri and a single homer on the last night of D1 NCAA softball in her career. It was almost fitting that Yoshikawa was the last at bat and went down swinging to end this season.

From the homers she launched to the spectacular ESPN-like fielded outs she snagged at times and the frustrating moments in between, Traci Yoshikawa was a part of this historic season and Mr. and Mrs. Yoshikawa should be proud that they raised on hell of a young lady that represented her home state, her university, and her Ohana very well.

    Tonight’s chili pepper moment….

Comment from: O’ Long Time UH Fan [Visitor]

Two Irishmen, Patrick & Michael, were adrift in a lifeboat following a dramatic escape from a burning freighter. While rummaging through the boat’s provisions, Patrick stumbled across an old lamp. Secretly hoping that a genie would appear, he rubbed the lamp vigorously To the amazement of Patrick, a genie came forth. This particular genie, however, stated that he could only deliver one wish, not the standard three. Without giving much thought to the matter, Patrick blurted out, “Make the entire ocean into Guinness Beer!” The genie clapped his hands with a deafening crash, and immediately the entire sea turned into the finest brew ever sampled by mortals. Simultaneously, the genie vanished. Only the gentle lapping of Guinness on the hull broke the stillness as the two men considered their circumstances. Michael looked disgustedly at Patrick whose wish had been granted. After a long, tension-filled moment, he spoke: “Nice going Patrick! Now we’re going to have to pee in the boat!

Just try this. It is from an orthopedic surgeon. This will boggle your mind and you will keep trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can’t.
    It’s pre-programmed in your brain!
    1. While sitting where you are at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.
    2. Now, while doing this, draw the number ‘6’ in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction.
I told you so!!! And there’s nothing you can do about it! You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to
try it again, if you’ve not already done so.

Before I say good night, I leave you with one last question to ponder, esp for Kazz & Pomai —

What will the signage out in right field of RWSS look like??? (you know the bannahs?)

  522. Kazz June 8, 2010 11:31 pm

    Last thought of the day…

They had this K counter on Strasburg on SportsCenter just now.

They should count how many good games he’ll have as a rookie.

    Relax media… RELAX!!!

  523. Kazz June 8, 2010 11:34 pm

    JM,

There is a big billboard thing on both sides of the RWSS, just outside the foul line on the wall.

On the left outfield side is a board listing the names of Louisville Slugger All Americans, so they got two names to add to that. On the right side is a list of years of WAC titles, regional appearances, etc…

They’ll probably just fill those in.

They could use a “makeover” though… 😎 I think I just know the Tsaiko for some advice too… 😎

  524. Kazz June 8, 2010 11:38 pm

Still hungry… Good nite to all as I head out to Jack in the Box!!!!!!!

Good first day in our new “home” at the Star Advertiser!!!

  525. Pomai June 8, 2010 11:52 pm

    jm2375

“2010 WAC Champion” right next to the “2007 WAC Champion”

    I made up this one:
“Best dang softball team in the world”

I like mine best of all.

  526. Pomai June 8, 2010 11:54 pm

But in all honesty probably nothing, sad yeah?

  527. koakane™ June 8, 2010 11:59 pm

jm and pomai put this regional banner “winna winna chicken dinna 2010” the WAC banner should read “if can can if no can we did”

    bwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  528. jm2375 June 9, 2010 12:00 am

Pomai & Kazz – what about being the 5th best team in the country? 😀

    Stephen Tsai Says:

    June 8th, 2010 at 11:03 am
Back to business, when did the WAC become the developmental league for the Mountain West?
I think it’s time the WAC gets proactive. It needs to develop its own expansion plan. That means recruiting UNLV and San Diego State.
    I also would target Wyoming.
Hawaii might be isolated by water, but Wyoming is isolated, too. And it does not have a significant television market. What it has is good facilities. Wyoming will be left behind when the conferences shift again. Target the weak, I say.

I couldn’t agree with you more Stephen! It’s time Benson get off his butt and be proactive. He should remember that he’s our commish 1st and a BSU alumni 2nd.

Let BSU go to the MWC already. Hope BSU is still happy after Utah and TCU leaves for a BCS Super conference. The kicker is if BYU leaves too!

    good morning Hawaii!

KAZZ: While I have a little monthly donation to the Tsaiko fund,I have no problems with a donation to the softball pot.

I have been trying to figure out language which would not diminish the UH allocation to a program because of these special donations.

If the AD has given the golf program for example, $20,000 a year for the past 3 years, I would not want to see the $20,000 reduced because of outside donationss. If people decide to set up a monthly donation of $5 a month which would generate $500 a year, I don’t want the AD to reduce the golf allocation to $19,500!

The “secret” meeting of the Regents for Colorado actually was to discuss moving to the Pac-10. It seems that they are worried about the exit fee for the Big 12. They say that they don’t have an invitation for the Pac-10, but official invitations won’t be extended until everything a done deal.

The University of Colorado’s board of regents discussed legal options for switching conferences Tuesday afternoon but said CU did not receive an invitation to join the Pac-10 Conference.

One of the options is leaving the Big 12 for the Pac-10, which reportedly has Colorado among its expansion targets. However, the Big 12’s buyout clause is reportedly $9 million to $10 million.

Colorado could not pay off football coach Dan Hawkins’ estimated $3.1 million buyout last fall. So can the Buffaloes afford to leave the Big 12?

  552. Garret June 9, 2010 5:01 am

Kansas is upset about being left behind in the Big 12. However, it is their fault that their AD had to miss the Big 12 meetings due to their ticket scalping controversy. If Kansas didn’t have anybody there when Texas was looking for Pac-16 teams and Nebraska was looking for teams for the Big 10…you snooze you lose.

The Journal-World has learned that Kansas University Athletic Director Lew Perkins missed a portion of last week’s Big 12 meetings because he was testifying in Topeka before a federal grand jury regarding the university’s ticket scandal.

Conference realignment issues and the federal investigation into the ticket scam are not the only issues weighing on Perkins.

KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little has ordered an investigation of the school’s A.D. to see whether he violated any rules of ethics when exercise equipment from a vendor of KU Athletics was placed in his home. A former employee, William Dent, has said in published reports that the company that furnished the equipment was rewarded with better seats to KU men’s basketball games. Perkins, who went to Lawrence police to report that the former employee was attempting to blackmail him, reportedly paid $5,000 in April, more than three years after it was installed, for renting the equipment. Kansas ethics laws prohibit state employees from accepting many types of gifts.

  557. Garret June 9, 2010 5:27 am

    808ike,

I’m glad that you find the information useful. I’m following this very closely because of its importance to UH. There are people in Hawaii far more important than me to this and I know that the information may be useful to them. I also have a lot of ties to UT-Austin and it appears that Texas is central to all of this realignment situation, so that make things even more interesting to me. I only post about 25% of what I find though because I don’t want to overload the blog even more than I currently do and because a lot of what is published is just a duplicate of other articles or is wrong on the facts.

  558. 808ike June 9, 2010 5:30 am

  560. Garret June 9, 2010 5:32 am

Moving from the WAC to the MWC would give BSU about $3 million more per year in TV/basketball/bowl money. Why would SDSU or UNLV want to get $3 million less, pay MORE for travel, and lose their chance at being a BCS AQ conference by joining the WAC?

ST said earlier in the blog that UH should try to poach some of the MWC’s schools. The Advertiser reported a month or so ago that Karl Benson and the WAC *did* approach at least SDSU and UNLV. However, I cannot understand why they would choose to take less money and spend more in travel to join the WAC. The WAC’s schools also bring less fan interest, which would hurt attendance.

The fact is that UH would join the MWC if asked. So, why would UH fans think that MWC schools would choose to leave to join the WAC?

Things could be different if the MWC got raided significantly, but they have more TV money, more NCAA basketball money, and bigger paying bowls to offer schools to join them even if they lose some of their top teams.

  561. Garret June 9, 2010 5:38 am

    808ike,

Have you read all the articles about how Texas might still end up in the Big 10? They are actually pretty plausible and well researched, but I don’t post them here because only the Pac-10 rumors directly affect UH.

I don’t post the articles about schools positioning themselves to be grabbed by the SEC or ACC (killing the Big East), since it doesn’t affect UH much. The only thing that does affect UH is that the Big East or ACC might end up taking C-USA schools, which means that La Tech would get to join the C-USA like they wish.

The MWC is apparently trying to make a big push to get Colorado. However, that would be $10 million or so *less* per year for Colorado and they already have a budget deficit, so that is pretty much a worst-case option for Colorado. Colorado’s horrible football record would hurt the MWC’s chance of getting an AQ spot unless the Big 12 went away…then they would become one automatically it seems.

Anyway, these are little summaries of some of the stuff I’m not posting.

  562. Garret June 9, 2010 5:48 am

By the way, if Nebraska joins the Big 10 as planned in 2011, then they would pay Texas at Nebraska this season and *not* need to play in Austin next season. Nebraska will get a huge pay day from having Texas at home this season, especially after the Big 12 title game last season.

  563. 808ike June 9, 2010 5:50 am

    Garret,

Agree! Texas is the driving force of the realignment of conferences. I think
    ND is second.

  564. Garret June 9, 2010 5:53 am

Fox is trying to keep the Big 12 together and is proposing a 20-year TV contract extension! If they are offering Big 10/SEC money guaranteed for 20 years, that would be more than $4 billion!

The funny thing is that Fox also will apparently own 49% of the Pac-10/12/16 TV network when that gets started in 2012. So, Fox wins either if the Big 12 stays together or if Texas goes to the Pac-16. Fox *also* owns 49% of the Big 10 TV network, so they win if Texas goes to the Big 10 also.

    # Fox has engaged the Big 12 AD’s with a plan for massive expansion on the current Big 12 television contract
    # Fox has proposed extending the current TV contract up to 2030
    # Fox has proposed a nationally televised ‘Big 12 Game of the Week’
    # The Big 12 would have to stay intact for the contract to be valid, with Nebraska a must-have (no word on Mizzou)

This would effectively narrow the revenue gap between the Big 12 and the Big 10/SEC, making a Big 12 member team’s move to another conference not as attractive

  565. Garret June 9, 2010 5:58 am

    808ike,

I read reports that the Big 10 is offering to go to a “pod” setup (similar to what the WAC-16 used!) if they go to 16 teams. Multiple reports say that they are trying to make things attractive for Texas to join them by offering to put Texas A&M, Nebraska and *Notre Dame* in the same pod as Texas. That would give Texas an annual game against Notre Dame, plus an estimated $40 million in TV money.

I don’t believe the pod setup is true, but I do believe that they are using Notre Dame as an incentive for Texas to join them.

Jeremiah Taeatafa Masoli (born August 24, 1988 in San Francisco, California) was a college football quarterback for the Oregon Ducks football team.[1] On June 9, 2010, the university announced that Masoli had been dismissed from the team following his arrest for drug posession two days prior.
