Spain transfers to JC

Head coach Norm Chow said Kevin Spain is transferring to Scottsdale Community College in Arizona.

Spain did not play in his first UH season, in 2010, after undergoing shoulder surgery. He did not take a snap in a game last season.

Spain did not participate in spring training this year.

* * * * *

Chow is conducting exit interviews with each player this week.

* * * * *

No, Chow does not have a second job.

He volunteered to sell Keiki Day newspapers this morning.

* * * * *

Motivated yet?

There is a report that Rick Neuheisel will be hired as a commentator for the Pac-2 Network. USC is in the Pac-12 and UH opens against USC . . .

Happy birthday to the Magic Man:

Chow said there is a lot of paperwork involved.

He said UH is a CC school.

Every form and email is CC’d to several people.

  13. Da Punchbowl Kid May 9, 2012 6:55 am

So wea da heo is Kevin these days? Hiatus? Vacation? Spam banned?

We miss his keen wit and sometimes acerbic observations on life and UH sports.

Here’s a thought on admitting Boise State to the Big West: UH should offer to support it, IF Boise State delivers a written pledge from the Big East not to offer invitations to any more MWC schools.

I don’t mind sharing a basketball conference with the Broncos. But not if it enhances Boise State’s and the Big East’s ability to damage UH’s football conference.

Actually, I take that back. I don’t miss the sock puppets. You know who I’m talking about.

But you, Brew-san are one of a kind. Always enjoy your posts. I think I’ve said that a number of times.

  29. βρεω808 May 9, 2012 8:03 am

IMHO – the Big West should remain a California-based conference with UH as the exception. That keeps the travel costs ($ and time) to a minimum.

Expanding beyond CA voids the travel benefits UH seeks – and would bring the MWC or other back into play (if UH were so invited – not!).

morning 808 and anoddah sunny day in Hawaii

congrats to Hilo knocking off da Puns. think they went sluff off their first pitcher and too hilo easy. neva do dat in a state playoffs. if you have nothing to do catch some bball at LMS or Hans. looks like an interesting and even team tourny this year. hope trap checking out some of these players, most very good.

The Western Athletic Conference today released its 2012 all-WAC softball teams and major awards as selected by the league’s head coaches. Hawai’i’s Stephanie Ricketts was named Pitcher of the Year. Leisha Li’ili’i was named Freshman of the Year and Bob Coolen was named Coach of the Year. Congrats to them.

Sometimes you get the golf trip, sometimes you get gently used oven mitts.

  36. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 8:11 am

I think academic fraud should be more than an NCAA violation.

It should be a federal crime because of the tax exemptions a school receives.

  37. jm2375 (Infuse) May 9, 2012 8:12 am

Congratulations to Coolen, Steph and Leisha! Definitely well-deserved.

  40. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 8:14 am

    Al:

Wrote that was he was de-activated from the team.

But now he’s decided to go to Scottsdale, where he actually will face some strong competition.

There’s a QB on the Scottsdale roster named Hunter Young. UH used to have a QB named Hunter Young. Wonder if they’re related.

  41. kapakahi May 9, 2012 8:15 am

Plain and simple…..Spain missed attending a mandatory team meeting (of which he apparently didn’t receive the mass text notice for)…..which subsequently resulted in him being dismissed from the team by the coaching staff.

  42. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 8:18 am

Actually, that’s not the whole reason.

He wasn’t in the QB picture. Basically, he was told QBs aren’t clip-board holders. He could stay but there weren’t many scenarios where he would play much.

  43. kapakahi May 9, 2012 8:19 am

“These are the facts of the case. And they are undisputed.”

  44. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 8:20 am

I know which former player and his father you’ve been talking to. Things aren’t always what they seem.

  45. kapakahi May 9, 2012 8:21 am

Agreed that while maybe not the whole reason, definitely a big part of the reasons.

  46. kapakahi May 9, 2012 8:31 am

    ST,

It’s true that I’ve been talking to them, but actually they didn’t know anything about it. The fact of the matter is that they’re focusing on their own endeavors and aren’t really into UH football anymore.

Just like you, got multiple sources.

  49. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 8:48 am

    kev-1

Spain is a very nice guy and it’s too bad he was never healthy enough to get an opportunity the past two years.

He has a chance at a new start.

Steele Jantz made the most of going through the JC route.

  50. koakane May 9, 2012 8:49 am

also adding best wishes to KS, harsh realities with head coach change. sad but it is what it is.

  51. bleedgreen May 9, 2012 8:50 am

Kevin Spain made the best move for himself. By transferring to a Jr. College, he can play without sitting out a year. Had he transferred to a FBS school, he would have sat out his sophomore year, leaving only two years to play two. That after not playing a down since high school. He needed to get back on the playing field.

  52. βρεω808 May 9, 2012 8:52 am

I’d like to have Kazz back!!! Kazz was hea long B4 all that ID habut w/ Sybil. 🙂 😀 😆

  53. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 8:54 am

As I recall, there was a great public clamor to change coaches.

I think some felt they would remove McMackin — and his salary — and everything would go on as usual.

Well, it’s a complete overhaul. Tony Tuioti, Inoke Funaki and the student help are the only holdovers.

There have been a lot of changes, and there probably will be a few more.

  54. βρεω808 May 9, 2012 8:57 am

85 schollies, about 105 roster spots, 11 guys on the field at any time (altho UH has been known try having +/- 1 or 2 players).

Sometimes there’s no space, no PT for everyone. Players (and their families) have to take care of themselves too – and sometimes that means moving on.

Hey – same philosophy about blogs and life in general….. 😐

  55. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 8:58 am

    bumbye he learn.

  71. kev-1 May 9, 2012 9:30 am

Thinking of it like a teacher, maybe an exit interview is like an exit pass in school. Before you leave, you need to tell me what you learned.

Maybe Coach wants to gauge how much his players have picked up before they depart for the summer.

  72. mctruck May 9, 2012 9:33 am

ST, ur #53….does dat mean like changes to his current staff??

  73. PONO May 9, 2012 9:35 am

    Howzit Steve M

  74. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 9:43 am

Exit intereview is basically a coach giving his evaluation of a player, and then the player giving his thoughts on the program and coaches. Then the coach gives the player a list of expectations. Then things are signed, everyone is cc’d and the offseason begins.

  75. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 9:46 am

They’re going to try to add a GA and, if things go OK, add another non-coaching position.

Not sure who QB Troy Williams is, but there’s a report he got an offer from UH.

  79. tommui May 9, 2012 9:56 am

There is a Troy Williams – freshman QB in Cal. Been offered by a whole bunch of major schools. Next visit is to UDub.

You can Google him – beware, there is a Troy Williams who is a basketball player.

  80. al May 9, 2012 10:00 am

troy williams is the 14th rated qb.

WAC softball tournament opens today. WAC softball tweets: “Thunderstorms, humidity, temps in the 60s, a flood advisory and the home team didn’t even qualify. Who’s ready for today’s WAC tourney? :-)”

another WAC softball observation: “Fact of the day: Not a single school participating in this year’s WAC softball tournament will remain in the conference after July 2013.”

  82. kev-1 May 9, 2012 10:03 am

MWC would be foolish not to welcome back Boise should they ask.

  83. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 10:03 am

14th in the West or nation?

I’d do some actual research but 1) I’m on vacation and 2) apparently I have to hunt down Kazz.

    congrats to the Wahine accolades!

i’m surprised that no catchers were considered for 1st or 2nd team WAC. Wartner does deserve consideration and recognition. how many WAC catchers call the pitches for their pitchers? seeing that she is only a freshman that is one huge responsibility. it also displays her knowledge of the pitching staff, the opposing batters, and the game.

  91. Chawamushi May 9, 2012 10:59 am

#70. Punahou just doesn’t seem to have the talent lately. Players are smaller in stature and pitchers don’t throw hard. Punahou was known for their late inning comebacks via the 2-3 run long ball. Harrison not throwing his ace was surprising considering that there’s no tomorrow. Dookie still has a say in the state championship, albeit it’s on the Kailua side of the dugout!

  92. Ralph May 9, 2012 11:10 am

SEC softball tournament on Thursday: seeded #1 Alabama #2 Tennessee #3 Florida #4 Georgia. Eight teams in the tourney. Single elimination. Hopefully the underdogs can topple a few of the top seeds or keep them from winning the championship, otherwise we will have a repeat where 2 or 3 SEC teams serve as super regional host and possibly 4 at the regional level. No SEC has ever won the national championship but ESPN loves the SEC, Kara Capuano of ESPN hosts a SEC weekly.

  93. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 11:11 am

Don’t know who Luca Bruno is,but there is a report he received an offer fro UH.

  94. whitey May 9, 2012 11:13 am

ofeer and commit are 2 different words, so have no problem with 50 or more offers. as commits are secured, position offers will drop, but i truly like the way da warriors coaches are going about their recruiting.

  95. whitey May 9, 2012 11:13 am

    ofeer = offer

  96. whitey May 9, 2012 11:15 am

  98. Derek May 9, 2012 11:32 am

People come and people go all the time. Hey, Corey Nielson was a good guy and a top student too. By all accounts, Darien Godfrey was a good guy too. Things just don’t work all sometimes and it happens all over the country at all the athletic programs. You don’t like to see players leave early, like Bobby Miles, Trevor Wiseman, Joston Thomas, and Shaquille Stokes but I can understand why people leave, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Miles was probably not going to get a lot of minutes and his free throw shooting was pretty bad. Thomas, well, to me he was hot and cold and you never knew how he was going to play from game to game. He tended to play out of control by taking bad shots and bad turnovers. Wiseman was a hustler and he had a role and Stokes was just coming into his own. Those 2 guys I think would have been good if they stuck around as Wiseman would have been only a Junior and Stokes would have been a sophomore. But, we have to move on and try to get better and I like Gib Arnold’s perspective which is to get high character guys, guys who are team oriented, and who are talented. Arnold has gone to great lengths to go all over the world to get players. I like that he’s working hard at recruiting. He’s trying to get this UH program to get to the next level and he knows we had to make changes and find better players. That said, I hope Dressler, Lev, Fotu, Spearman, and Clair are all “players”. We will see. But I like the make up.

Joaquin, C, Sr. Standhardinger, PF, Jr. Brereton, SF, Sr.

Rozitis, C, Jr. Fotu, PF, Jr.O

    Dressley, C, Fr.

    Jefferson, G, Jr. Minns, G, Jr. (Walk-On)

    Tavita, G, Sr. Brown, F, Soph. (Walk-On)

Lev, SG, Fr. Enos, G, Fr. (Walk-On)

    Spearman, G, Jr.

    Clair, G, Fr.

    Jawato, G, Fr.

That’s 12 scholarship players and 3 walk-ons and with 1 scholarship left open to offer for this year. From the looks of it, I think we can use a 6-5 or 6-6 player, an athletic versatile type. That’s why I think Armstead would be perfect, a young guy with energy who is very athletic. Wishing and hoping!!!!

  99. A-House May 9, 2012 11:33 am

    tommui/al/ST:

if this Troy Williams kid is a freshman in high school and taking all these visits, will he able to take more as a soph, jr, and sr? 5 official visits per year?

is he taking “unofficial” visits as a freshman or “official”?

  100. A-House May 9, 2012 11:45 am

If UH cannot get the top 5 local players to commit every year, I find it hard to phantom how UH will get any top players from the mainlnad to commit as freshman.

Altho, I find it interesting to read about top players and keep the dream going.

This brings up an interesting point about Texas being able to continually get commitments from the top Texas players yearly, but it has not shown itself on the field the past 3 years. I admit that I don’t follow Texas closely, but like to read all of Garret’s posts on their successes. Is Mack Brown in trouble now? or, did I read that he got a vote-of-confidence recently.

  101. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 11:45 am

UH has made about 40-plus offers, and should have about 18 scholarships available.

    That’s not a bad ratio.

If I were a kid who was really interested in UH, I’d made a verbal commitment now. Then, at least, UH will hold a scholarship. You can change your mind later, and still take other trips, but it’s always good to have a train ticket in case the plane flight gets canceled.

  102. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 11:47 am

Troy Williams will be a senior this coming season.

He’s part of the 2013 class.

  103. A-House May 9, 2012 11:49 am

    Derek:

maye Coach Gib will get ultra lucky and secure a 2nd Michael Jordan type at 6′ 7″ or 6′ 8″.

I remember that 7′ plus player that Riley Wallace brought to Rainbow Stadium and we all looked and was wishing – yes, it was a wish as he commited to UCLA and rode the bench for his entire career.

  104. A-House May 9, 2012 11:51 am

thank you neighbor on clarifying Williams’ status!

hey al, could he be the “holy grail”?

  105. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 11:56 am

    A-House:

Was that the guy in the 1990s?

I remember I was at the UH basketball office, and nobody was around, and the phone kept ringing. So I picked it up, and it turned out to be that 7-footer. I was trying to write down his info when he said: “Hey, you’re not a coach,” and he hung up. I think his name was Mike Lanier.

It’s not going to be the past where they stockpiled quarterbacks.

I think most programs don’t have more than five QBs in the system.

    90, 91.

    Nice find, Al.

  110. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 12:00 pm

    Good post, Derek.

Nowadays I have to look twice when I see a lengthy post. But you made some nice points. Thanks.

ahouse if we have the opportunity to rename the aloha stadium, “the house that troy built” then he would the holy grail. this would be a great closing line in his recruitment.

come to hawaii and help rebuild this program. get us to the pac12 and this stadium you are standing in will be forever renamed “the house that troy built”.

  112. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 12:08 pm

    Speaking of Troy . . .

USC’s media relations director named his son Troy.

He has a job for life.

  113. al May 9, 2012 12:09 pm

ahouse…no team gets their state’s top five recruits.

everyone is landing at the honolulu airport these days looking f00or a vacation and a hawaii football player. this year will be even more exceptional as scott pagano the state’s top player has nearly 40 offers right now and come february 2013 he’ll have offers from every major program.

and there’s more on the islands this year. at least 5-10 of the nation’s top 100 players are in our backyards.

stevem…i know you are not referring to the pagoda.

i assume you mean that local cruise liner. sometimes i come up with a great idea…this could be one.

so if i am the owner of that cruise liner i would open the doors/hatches to the general public at each port of call in maui, oahu, hawaii, kauai, etc to one of those fabulous buffets charging a fair amount to partake. i would accomplish two things:

one, show the folks what great food we serve and how you can fill yourself to the gills.

two, expose the ship to those who have never stepped foot on one of those decks.

three, handout a one time discount coupon (yah coupons are in) for a future cruise.

a cheap trick in low cost marketing program and a way to get new customers in my door/hatches.

remember how gibber said it is the trend these days in college basketball?

remember how gibber said the average in college turnovers are 40% across the nation?

remember how many thought that gibber was giving us the lip service on this?

well this article says its true…

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/sns-mct-college-basketball-players-transferring-in-large-20120508,0,7588052.story

  156. Derek May 9, 2012 2:17 pm

Yeah, and what about those two 7’0″ twin towers from Senagal!!!! Seven footers are dime a dozen. We don’t need a Rogue Harris type player or a hatchet man. I always thought Skip Williams was a hatchet man because he made a lot of fouls and he came off the bench.

Now, Davis Rozitis is starting to get that reputation. He got famous last season for fouling out in the first half. When you’re that big, their primary role is to defend the paint alter shots, get offensive and defensive rebounds, and score about 10 points a game. But, you can find some athletic big men around and if you do, it’s huge for the program. Joaquim is good, bordering on very good, but not All-American level. Dressler and Fotu, I hope have potential to be very, very good. As freshman, they have time to grow some more. If Fotu can grow to be 6’11”, 250 lbs. and he’s athletic look out. Same for Dressler is he grows to 7’0″ or 7’1″. I believe the future is bright.

As for football, Chow and Co. are planting the seeds early with all these early offers and they will eventually harvest the fruits of their labor. They are competing against Pac 12 teams and other big names, but I’m confident they will get their share. Like any team, Chow is looking for that one top QB to take our team to the next level and chase and win championships.

  157. tommui May 9, 2012 2:27 pm

    #161 DEREK:

Yep, Skip was good at what he did as an enforcer.

Lost track of him – wonder where he is now.

  158. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 2:28 pm

I don’t think 7-footers are crucial to college programs anymore.

Give me an active 6-9 guy or a wide-bodied 6-7 guy, and you can win. It also helps to have a couple of skinny 3-point shooters.

  159. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 2:29 pm

    But, yeah, Dean’s is awesome.

And the French toast at Times Coffee Shop is amazing.

  160. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 2:31 pm

People come and go, and it’s never a good thing when there’s a mass exodus.

But what’s done is done, and you can’t spend life looking in the rear-view mirror.

Turn the page, as we used to say in the 80s.

  161. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2012 2:32 pm

But, most important, get the rack of lamb at Dean’s.

  162. wafan May 9, 2012 2:33 pm

  163. tommui May 9, 2012 2:35 pm

AL #155 – good idea except you may need a heck of a lot of security people around and TSA-type check at the ship.

When people go cruising, one of the first thing before going on the ship is that you get an ID card with photo imbeded – the card then is put into a machine when you board which shows your photo on the machine (it is not imbeded on the card itself) and that card put into the machine as you leave the ship and so that the ship-people knows whether you are on board or off the ship. It is also used as a sort of credit card on the ship for your purchases (souvenirs, gifts, drinks etc).

I would imagine if you allow the general public to board the ship, they would have to go to somesort of routine as above – otherwise you might have a bunch of stowaways!

  164. βρεω808 May 9, 2012 2:35 pm

What does “turn the page” mean when we will soon have only iPads, Nooks, and Kindles? 🙄

  167. Haleakala May 9, 2012 2:49 pm

    Al:

That is a good article about the national trend of college basketball players moving on to other schools before their four years are up. It must be part of a societal problem where many kid’s (and adults) nowadays expect instant gratification. If there are any little obstacles in the way, they take a different path instead of working through the problem and keeping their commitment. I think part of it is that communication through emailing, Facebook, twitter, and blogs are instantaneous and they get all kinds of conflicting advice. 20 years ago, they could only read the daily paper and receive calls over the phone. Then there wasn’t the problem like there is today.

  168. Ralph May 9, 2012 2:52 pm

Na Wahine will play San Jose State on Thursday. Spartans came back from a 4-2 deficit after 2 innings to win 9-6, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th. We get to face Pridmore once again.

Going back to my little grass shack on business. Calling Hilton Hawaiian home for last two weeks of May. Yeah!

  193. Derek May 9, 2012 6:39 pm

Interesting about the All-WAC softball team. There is no catcher. I thought it was odd. I guess the selection doesn’t necessarily go by position. But, in my opinion it doesn’t make sense, just like an All-WAC football team that doesn’t have a quarterback! The catcher in baseball is a leader out there. Then again, there are a lot of things in life doesn’t make sense too. Like how cum a secretary pays more taxes percentage wise than Warren Buffett or Mitt Romney.

  194. Ipu Man May 9, 2012 6:51 pm

    🙄

  195. BG May 9, 2012 7:07 pm

Interesting things going on at NMSU’s WAC softball tourny. Rain and lightning…and no tarp for the field? SJSU hits 5 hrs to beat Nevada, 9-6…Spartans hit FIVE homeruns?!!! And Fresno getting beat like a drum by La Tech. One Tech player has a grandslam AND a 3-run hr. Only reason the game’s not a run-away is that the Tech pitcher has walked 7 and has given up a 3-run and 2-run over-the-fence jobbers too. Must be past mid-night in TX…gonna check if they got past the rain delay or will try again in the morning. If delayed till morning, a couple of teams will have to play double headers tomorrow…ouch!

  196. BG May 9, 2012 7:33 pm

Fresno and Tech will play at 10:30am CST (5:30am HST). Yikes! If the players can sleep under those conditions, all the credit to them.

Na Wahine were sched for 11:30am, but will probably be pushed back a bit bcuz Fresno/Tech are still in the top of the 5th. Score is 13-7 with Spartans batting, but both teams are hitting the ball well. Interesting…the weather isn’t cooperating and neither is Tech.

    #53 & #55,

    ST,

I too appreciate all of your insights, information and posts.

Agreed that there will definitely still be few more changes (de-activations, retirements, etc….and some additions)…..some already done deals but not yet announced…..some expected….and maybe even a few not so expected.

  199. Derek May 9, 2012 8:07 pm

It will be interesting to see who will Coach Cooleen get as a starting pitcher for next year to replace Ricketts. Parnaby will take over as the #1 starter. Coolen will have to replace Robinson, Pagaduan, Duhaylongsod-Kaleimamahu, and Aguirre. I would assume Li’ili’i will take over at first base. Zamora possibly at second base, or Nakao or vice-versa at third base also. Who will play in left field? For sure with Wartner, Iwata, Majam, Li’ili’i, and Kliebenstein the Wahine will continue to have lots of power in the lineup. I don’t know if Keiki Carlos is a Division I level pitcher, but she also has a good bat too so she can play in the field also. Obviouisly, I’m missing a lot of players in the program and there are some talented freshman coming in too. Either way, the Wahine will just re-load. Just looking ahead, but first the Wahine has business to take care off this week and in the NCAA tournament in the following weeks. All Hawaii are rooting for the Wahine to go all the way this year and win the NCAA Softball championship.

Found this in a rookie camp report for the Vikings. Thought some of you might enjoy . . .

“The Vikings signed LB Soloman Elimimian at the end of January to a future free agent contract, and now they’re getting to see the former CFL standout on the field in Minnesota for the first time. I’m guessing they like what they see so far. Elimimian plays with great energy, always seems to be around the ball and is clearly athletic enough to compete at the NFL level. He might be undersized, but that might also not matter. Now, it’s one thing to standout in rookie minicamp and it’s an entirely different matter to standout when the veterans arrive. But so far, so good for Elimimian.”

Time to go moi moi….I was looking at the NCAA website and a player from UTEP is leading the nation in home runs at 32. She is only a freshman but the team overall has a losing record.

Slenzi, the guy you are thinking about from Utah State is Wilkinson. He ended up being WAC player of the year. He considered UH, but it took too long to hire Bob Nash at the time.

BHF, I’m not familiar with the Wong gal from Hilo. One Wahine I’m curious about is Austin

Wilkenson from Washington. She didn’t play at all this year so maybe she was red-shirting being she’s a freshman. But, I had read and heard about her and her exploits in high school. She was a terrific player for her school and pretty much dominated her competition.

But, hard to say because if she was that good you would think Univ. of Washington would have recruited her and maybe they did, I don’t know. We’ll have to see how she does next year and I noticed she was backing up Sarah Robinson at 3B during warm-ups. I also saw her at the Rainbow baseball game with Sarah Robinson so I think she is pegged in to try to compete for playing time next year at 3B. Just an assumption on my part.
