Seeking a balance

Much like how natural wildfires can reset the ecosystem, fiery football practices also can provide useful sparks during a five-week-long spring training.

In the first nine spring practices, the UH coaches have tried to find a balance between promotion and provocation; being chipper and chirping.

That was evident in a scuffle during the past Saturday’s scrimmage. While fights, particularly the hold-me-back type, can be a boost to lackadaisical practices, Saturday’s scuffle rankled the coaches because it came during a red-zone drill designed to simulate a game situation. A player, who was trying to serve as peacekeeper, was nicked on the helmet by a swung helmet.

The coaches are willing to write off penalties such as false starts and offsides, as part of the business of football. But personal fouls and unsportsmanlike penalties are unpardonable. It has been a goal to cut back on emotional penalties this spring.

Last year, the Warriors were flagged 19 times for personal fouls or unsportsmanlike penalties. That does not include two other violations that were waived because of off-setting penalties.

Coach Nick Rolovich said he wanted his team to be “more mentally strong when things got tough” during Saturday’s practice.”

He added: “People are worrying about the wrong things. โ€ฆ Until we change that, we’re a three-win football team that doesn’t focus on the right things.”

    Foist!

    ditto the HC’s comments

  3. RoseMarie Chargualaf April 18, 2016 12:27 pm

gett’m to grow up a bit more, not everything is fun and games, personal maturity is what will help the players think more like adults and savor the victory party hoorahs for the appropriate time

  4. Akamai Okole April 18, 2016 12:27 pm

    (Foist!)

    …to be 2nd. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

  5. Bryson April 18, 2016 12:29 pm

That scuffle was pretty bad I could clearly see the helmet being swung from the parking garage,no call for that in game or at practice especially when it’s endangering one of your own…

  6. legistlature April 18, 2016 12:36 pm

โ€œPeople are worrying about the wrong things
Like some in previous postings and continual postings. Not necessary but who’s to stop them. However, their remarks/comments is all good in their eyes.
They talk football only…The football god’s they think they are
    Don’t get mad…Don’t attack..Don’t get even…Just move on

  7. Akamai Okole April 18, 2016 12:40 pm

OTOH, perhaps the players need to be reminded that no one needs to be going for knees in practice

  8. scott April 18, 2016 12:41 pm

I know this is isn’t about football, but here is an article on former Rainbow Warrior Baseball player Steven Wright. It’s along the lines of Coach Rolo’s Live Aloha Play Warrior movement.

The Warriors will find the right level of ferocity and friendship within the team. Rolo has the plan.

At least one of the players involved will be one the best to ever play for the Warriors. This may have not been the best day for him, but his passion will be huge when the the game is on the line.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    I second Jeezy’s motion.

and not lift oneself up above the other. “Fair”

  14. Boolakanaka April 18, 2016 1:01 pm

We have a second ?? Well, within deliberative bodies a second to a proposed motion is an indication that there is at least one person besides the mover that is interested in seeing the motion come before the meeting. It now goes before the deliberative body….

In other words, bruddha chill already….

Some coaches coach players to irk opponents to get them penalized when they retaliate—maybe even get thrown out of a game. I’m sure we don’t but should be aware of it—especially when we play Michigan ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. legistlature April 18, 2016 1:54 pm

fiery football practices also can provide useful sparks—-
In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches.
But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.

  21. legistlature April 18, 2016 2:01 pm

Netane Muti finised 3rd in the shot put this past Saturday at Punahou.
He’s an imposing figure can’t wait to see him battle with Fred

  22. turfwar April 18, 2016 2:26 pm

Maybe the guy who finished first in the shot is a guy we should be looking at if he’s a qualifier. A 6’4″ 235 DE could fill a position suddenly in need.

  23. legistlature April 18, 2016 4:05 pm

Oops Netane finished 3rd in Discus not shot put
1st Sione Vea Kave from Kalani 6’5 225lbs
Finishing 4th Joshua Hauanio “Hawaii Committ” from Iolani

  24. 808warriorfan April 18, 2016 4:54 pm

HOW STUPID … swinging a helmet as a weapon at your own teammate … I hope Rolo “throws the book” at the offender and makes him start at the bottom. Inexcusable

  25. H-Man April 18, 2016 4:59 pm

247sports reassesses their player rankings upon conclusion of the final recruiting class by team. Hawaii ranked 102. Two upgrades: Josh Hauani’o rated 3-star (0.7998) and Cole McDonald also 3-star (0.8054). I feel this speaks well for the coaching staff to pick these two players when other D1 schools overlooked them.

  26. C-Pop April 18, 2016 5:06 pm

Legislature – you are hilarious – this kid from Leilehua Netane Muti gotta be a relative of yours, and why does he have to go against Fred Ulu-Perry, Ulu-Perry is already in school at UH, Muti hasn’t graduated from HS and until he is officially accepted and part of fall camp he won’t be facing anyone at UH.

  27. legistlature April 18, 2016 5:14 pm

was nicked on the helmet by a swung helmet. the nick on the helmet is myna (like the bird) it took the seed and flew away. Need not to follow up on concussion protocol. Maybe! they call that battle scars.
Coco stay planting seeds again on players helmets. Haha

  28. legistlature April 18, 2016 5:25 pm

battle to make one another better at their craft. Like you trying to battle me. Why?
you not gonna make me better. haha
    Can’t wait-relax bully boy

See you boys and girls at practice..7am

  30. Warrior Dave April 18, 2016 6:47 pm

No wonder Rolo was so upset on Saturday news. Needs to stop this garbage now or it’ll carry to the season.

  31. A-House April 18, 2016 7:21 pm

the “culture” — cannot be taken from books, but kinetically be it football or learning a new work position — some do it better than others and vice versa

when I spoke to my “boss” about office culture, he referred me to reading books — told him “culture” of the company is not found in books, but in the daily working relationships and exchanges between employees and management; the willingness of all to work to a common goal of making the company better; offering lower positioned employees the opportunity to learn and progress in their chosen field

that hit a dead balloon — so far, but I don’t give up easily

  32. legistlature April 18, 2016 9:42 pm

    Let the godly strike me!
    It will be a kindness!
If they correct me, it is soothing medicine.
    Don’t let me refuse it.

    But I pray constantly
against the wicked and their deeds.
    Don’t give up

  33. legistlature April 18, 2016 9:45 pm

What sorrow awaits those who try to hide their plans from the LORD,
who do their evil deeds in the dark!
“The LORD can’t see us,” they say.
“He doesn’t know what’s going on!”

  34. legistlature April 18, 2016 9:46 pm

    Nite ya’ll -find that balance

  35. dopaco24 April 18, 2016 10:17 pm

    Stephen,

Any news on the new Hawaii exemption that allows Hawaii to start every football season a week early? It was adopted by the D1 Legislative committee on April 8th by a vote of 15-0. It was part of the same meeting as the satellite camp ban, which . They just posted a final report of the meetings. Just copy “April2016DICouncil_Report_20160418” and paste it in your search.
