Search is almost over

Those two visitors on the UH campus this past weekend?
They were finalists for one of the coaching positions.
A decision will be announced in about a week.

* * *

Seven years ago today, I nearly died, which would have been kind of a bummer. Especially for me.
Which is why I’m appreciative of having seen:
• The men’s volleyball team defeat Pepperdine in the NCAA volleyball final. Costas played alongside pros three years earlier? Who cared that night. Tony Ching was at his best, and so was Vili.
• Ever try to watch a football game from the sideline? You can’t see squat. Well, June Jones has that amazing ability to dissect a defense from the sidelines. Not only that, he has a photographic and panoramic memory. He can watch a play and tell you what every player is doing. His multi-tasking skills were on display in 2005, when he was in his office watching a PGA telecast while searching for the mortgage papers for his parents’ house while debating whether to allow a skinny player to join his team. He found the papers, rattled off the names on the leaderboard and said he was all but sure he would accept Colt Brennan.
• I think the most chicken-moment of the 2007 season wasn’t the victories over Boise State or Washington, but being in the Stan Sheriff Center awaiting the announcement of UH’s BCS destination. The decision was already leaked before the telecast started, and the announcement was more matter-of-fact, but the faces of the players and fans represented pure joy.
* Two words: Apple martini(s).
• Two more words: Blog readers. We’ve celebrated births and romances together, mourned the losses of loved ones, and sang ourselves hoarse. Yet 2 1/2 years ago, we were all strangers to each other. Well, maybe not. Some of us became reacquainted: Rob25 and Ronnie, Al and SteveM, me and Rich2176.
Anyway, Happy Valentine’s Day.

Birthday shoutout to Kieren.

Will there be a permanent RB coach next year? And are there any plans for Leon Jackson, he seems like such a talent but Mack brought in a lot of good RB’s in this recruiting class. I dont want Leon to just sit on the sidelines, I hope at least he returns kicks.

ST- I’m glad you did not die prematurely! Mahalo for the June Jones insight. I still remember fervently praying for him after his accident. That may have been the first time praying and football came together for me.

Great to hear that one of the coaching positions is about to be filled!

  16. Garret February 14, 2009 9:01 am

This writer sure isn’t a fan of Colt…

Is it just me or does this guy have a lot of hype? Everyone I know expects this guy to be a hall of famer. I don’t know why you’re called a future hall of famer even though you have good games against third and fourth stringers.

Everyone wanted him to start last season even though he was a rookie. I guarentee that most Redskins’ fans would rather see Colt Brennan than Jason Campbell. I thought he was pretty good, but he has a long way to go before he can start.

I wonder what’s happening with Bolla… maybe the women’s team will get a better coach.

I almost died in 2000. It is really true what Bulla professes …
Make memories, make memories, make memories…

The Tsaikos are part of my fun-filled memories.

Texas Tech sure is having a messy public negotiation with Mike Leach. He has 2 years left on his contract but they are issuing deadlines on accepting their offer. After 10 months of negotiations resulted in both sides agreeing on the monetary terms, Texas Tech added 4 provisions to the agreement and are refusing to budge on any of them. Why wait 10 months and then add terms that no other coach in the conference has (like giving the school all money from speaking agreements, TV and radio commercials, and book deals)? Somebody at Texas Tech seems to really want Leach to leave…

Texas Tech officials sent a defiant message Friday to coach Mike Leach:

Accept the terms of the school’s contract extension offer by Tuesday or face the consequences.

After 10 months of negotiations, Leach’s agents and Tech have agreed in principle on the contract’s compensation terms – $12.7 million over five years that would extend his contract through 2013.

However, negotiations have unraveled since Tech added four provisions Jan. 9.

  30. al ™ February 14, 2009 9:27 am

the boss and i actually beat the rush by celebrating valentine’s day last night. when i made the reservation i told the gal that i was the entertainer’s cousin and wanted to sit in his section. i was joking as usual but we do have the same last name.

so during the course of dinner and on one his breaks the solo guitar man comes over to the table and says, “oh, so you’re al, my long lost cousin?”

i say, “oh yah, audy how have you been? meet the boss.”

  31. Stephen Tsai February 14, 2009 9:28 am

    Man, I’ve got a cold.
Which makes my voice kind of deep.
Maybe I can sing the bass part for Boyz II Men.

ramon was from the mainland, me thinks califrisco went to uh as a running back and kicker. after he grad I meet him at damien. he was the one that always got me into PA. latter on he moved to another place, think it was at sheraton it was located downstairs by the entrance. forgot the name.

and besides I mentioned about toku when he came home for a visit. plenty beers and memories that night of course he had his trusty companion oniante with him. we also toasted to troy’s yosihimitsu father whom passed some time back.

  48. Bulla February 14, 2009 9:52 am

happy Valentines day to one and all,

to all the men who are blessed with a wife or significant other, make an effort today guys……

they won’t remember what you said, but they’ll remember how you made them feel

Mei Ling, you are right, make memories, make memories, make memories

guys, one more time, make an effort today, it is only one day, and think of where’d you be if you didn’t have that wonderful woman by your side

for my christian brothers out there, ‘love your wife as Christ loved the church’, remember, Adam died with his wife, Christ dies for his wife

and to all of the women who read this blog, i wanted to personally thank you for putting up with ‘the male species” for all these years. we are so incompetent at times, but judge us not by our actions or our words, but what is in our heart. for men, many of us cannot adequately express ourselves in the vernacular that you would understand, and thus the beginning of the end for many relationships unfortunately.

that is why God made it real easy by only having to say 3 words….

    I LOVE YOU

may this day be filled with love and special remembrances, and women, know in your heart that there is one that always adores you, 365 days a year, and that is your Heavenly Father.

    enough of the mini sermon,…..

    Men,

take a stand, make a plan, and BE A MAN

  49. al ™ February 14, 2009 9:53 am

koakane….the more we talk the more we get closer to being related. i recall ramon now.

and i once was toku’s mentor.

  50. Bulla February 14, 2009 9:54 am

    😉 sorry, still learning

  51. Da Punchbowl Kid February 14, 2009 9:55 am

We’re all glad that nobody here went before they were supposed to. When I had my accident those years ago, the Docs had me under a “death watch” for two weeks.

To live is to love, and love is the Almighty’s greatest gift to us. On that note, I suppose it’s no coincidence that love is found in such abundance here on this blog.

    Have a Happy Valentine’s Day all. 🙂

  52. Bulla February 14, 2009 9:57 am

    dpk,

good to hear you went from the death watch to the deaf watch….lot of guys suffer from ‘selective’ hearing, haha, or should it be huh….huh?

  53. Bulla February 14, 2009 9:59 am

    al

#42, i know a lot of punahou grads who wanted to go to UH but they weren’t allowed to……how come?

  54. d1島 February 14, 2009 10:00 am

    Alright! Break it up!
Stop, before everyone suddenly starts with “Kum-ba-yah”….

So I’ll be the second to ask: Who was on campus “this past weekend”?

  55. Bulla February 14, 2009 10:00 am

Bolla has left the women’s team? wow, what’s going on with that, they should be able to get a few wins now……..is that same asst coach still here from the last time? she did a GREAT JOB last time this happened.

oh well. we’ll know soon enough.

  56. Da Punchbowl Kid February 14, 2009 10:01 am

The irony of your statement is that the accident left me partially deaf in one ear.
That’s what has allowed me to have selective listening all these years… 😆

  57. koakane± February 14, 2009 10:02 am

so true bulla and well said

One finishing at UH in a semester or two, the other one was cheering for Matt Ryan last year.

Eh so how many sons do you REALLY have D1? There seems to be another addition according to your posts last night. Wanna tell us about it big daddy? 😉

Sending it up with another one of his cousins who will be doing a campus visit next week.
He’ll love it. Thanks again! 😉

  63. TOM February 14, 2009 10:07 am

Happy Valentine’s Day to one and all.

Bulla: The class of 2008 at Punahou listed some 10-15% of its graduates are at UH. Forgot the precise figure but it was in that area. If I recall correctly about 1/3 at in schools in the east coast and another 1/3 in California schools.

Have you been to the IHOP at the Aqua on Ala Moana?

  64. d1島 February 14, 2009 10:07 am

IHOP is IHOP, but at least you don’t have to wait in long lines at Wailana….so that is good

Happy Valentine’s Day to the Tsaikettes!

I’ve been home recovering all week and Peaches just gave me a cute Valentine Card. Guess I have to take her to her favorite fried chicken and rice place–maybe tomorrow night. 😉

…and for the memories past and future–here’s to ST, Tsai-kos, and the blog!

  73. Momo February 14, 2009 11:09 am

Happy valentines day to you all. Go the extra mile and so some thing nice to your gal…see you at the mbb game tonight

  74. Ralph February 14, 2009 11:25 am

Na Wahine loses again in softball, 1-6 record. Gals are playing in a tournament on the mainland…sad when Na Wahine starting pitcher is also the number 4 batter….Gonzalez is the number 2 in the rotation and is expected to contribute this season. Pitching and dh takes a toll on wahine pitchers because they tend to pitch without a lot of rest between outings. Coolan depended to much on the Aussie returning from the Olympics and she didn’t- better recruiting is needed to compete with Fresno State

  75. chawan_cut February 14, 2009 11:37 am

    Happy Valentines everyone.

#49 Bulla: Thanks for the great words of wisdom. We must cherish our loved ones and of course, make memories.

  82. Ralph February 14, 2009 12:13 pm

Wie and Stanford tied after 4, both -1 for the day, -9 for the tournament.

  83. Curt February 14, 2009 12:18 pm

Kani Kauahi must be one of the interviewees for the coaching position. Who could the other be? Anybody know if Jesse Sapolu was considered for the position?

  84. FloridaTed February 14, 2009 12:19 pm

Wie is playing with a new maturity, no longer forcing things, but rather let’s the game come to her, hope she’ll pull it off, for her sake.

  85. Curt February 14, 2009 12:25 pm

Go Michelle (Wie). You can do it.

  86. addahknowjoe February 14, 2009 12:26 pm

Man! We get some really romantic Tsai-kos in the house.

Lady’s- kindly read the above posts as my braddahz have poignantly expressed how I feel.

    Men Be good.

    Enjoy!

  87. addahknowjoe February 14, 2009 12:31 pm

oh and BTW- I can’t believe Bolla completely missed recruiting Hilo High’s Vicky Tagalicod. She’s heading off to USC next year.

    Shucks!

  88. Curt February 14, 2009 12:31 pm

Did you notice that ST got confirmation of Bolla’s status from the Chancellor’s office? I would think that something serious might be going on. The Chancellor should not be involved with minor day-to-day issues of the athletic dept. Hmmmm.

  89. addahknowjoe February 14, 2009 12:32 pm

What’s Vince Goo been up to lately?

  90. Curt February 14, 2009 12:35 pm

    bulla:

your #54 – what are you talking about? just going to school or play sports? who stopped them from going to UH? why?

    is UH “below” their standards?

  93. A-House February 14, 2009 1:24 pm

WBB team was so distracted that the Bolla’s weren’t there they committed, what 30 turnovers? must have kept looking at the bench and not concentrating.

Ladies, make the most of the rest of the season – have fun!

  94. A-House February 14, 2009 1:25 pm

Happy Valentine to all Tsaikos, near and far, and have a great day!

As I was bolting out the door with the cats (whom the boys caught) for their shots, #2 son mentions a Valentine breakfast. Ooops, too late. I had to rush back, drop off the cats and go to a funeral service (Kekoa- your favorite cousin says hi!). How about lunch? I called.
OK. now we are all going to lunch.

In all these years, I believe this is the first year that the kids are thinking of me at Valentines without prompting. Well, at least #2. #3 is like- lunch???

But I did get a cool valentine from ST 😆
    Mahalo!

  103. Stephen Tsai February 14, 2009 2:30 pm

    Re: Bolla.
Yeah, yeah. I got stuck with the story yesterday.
Anyway, there are reports that there was an incident that led to the “leave.”
Bolla and everyone in the AD have been placed on a sort of gag order.
The matter is being handled by the chancellor’s office, and only Gregg Takayama is allowed to comment. What he can say is limited, too.
Even if this gets resolved, it’s just never a good thing for the head coach to be home while the team is on road.
I’m hoping the program improves. It’s the only women’s college basketball program in the state.

  104. Stephen Tsai February 14, 2009 2:34 pm

Several years ago, a female basketball player was arrested for shoplifting. We gave big play to a football player who was arrested for the same incident. But when I approached Goo for a comment, he argued that because his program was not receiving much coverage, it wasn’t fair to blast them for a negative event. That made sense, I think.
Anyway, since I don’t cover women’s basketball, and I have limited interaction with the program, I’m not qualified to offer much of an opinion on the current situation.
But I’m sure more qualified readers may give their views.

Hau’oli la hanau to Kieren & Puanani!

My Mom recalled that Pat Charity did a good job with the WBB team the last time they needed an interim coach.

We could all go to the women’s game on Feb. 20th to show support. It would probably more than double the normal attendance if the Tsaikos showed up. And it’s the the day before the KK for las vegas, so we should have some time.

  129. roysan16 February 14, 2009 4:34 pm

The big news out of Dallas is the frenzy June has created by letting go quite a few players from his team. Some were warranted for disciplinary reasons. And some, as a lot of agreeing posters on the Dallas blogs replied in their comments, were for reasons that June wants to trim the dead wood from his team.

    And I agree, it’s the coach’s prerogative.

And furthermore, it doesn’t concern me in the manner of how June let go of his players. I’m more concerned about the Warriors.

For the reasons why I’m writing this today is that I want to look at Coach Mack and the Warriors and how what is coming out of Dallas relates to the Warriors. For I’m in agreement where if there’s need for the coach in trimming the deadwood then by all means trim the wood. Or release the marginal player, which is usually a third year player on scholarship that’s deep on the depth charts. It’s only for the betterment of the team.

In saying, “that for the good of the team…where winning is everything…and where winning is the bottom line…and where losing can be cause in the coach into be fired then he should have the prerogative to let players go even though their on scholarship where he sees fit”.

Even Coach Mack would know this. And he has been quoted as saying he pains…and it kills him to have to do this. But for the betterment of the team, he has to yield the axe ( hence the saying trimming the wood).

What people don’t realize is that a D-1 football scholarships are only one year renewable contracts. And accordingly, the athletic department and coach can take it away at their will and discretion.

Whereas other coaches would axe, axe …albeit, and seemingly, unmercifully I’d admire the coach that sits down with the player at this time of the year and tell him up front, man to man, and with extended humility that he is at risk of losing his scholarship… And tell him, again, up front that he buried in the depth charts and not unless a good performance in the spring elevates his status then he has to be released. I see this way as being the best. I think this would be how Coach Mack would approach this.

Bomb shell are unmerciful, receiving bad news to a kid is devastating. I’ve been there, I know how it feels. For all I saw was a closed door and a list of the names of the players that made the team. No further exchanges. So I can collaborate that a coach that’s at least up front with the boys means a lot. Again, I think Coach Mack will be.

In the scope of coaching, where the players and the coaches themselves are continuously under the microscope… how I see Coach Mack is that if he has to do…what coaches hate to do…yet it has to be done for the betterment of the team,… he’d probably do it with the utmost compassion.

    ST, good neighbor:

any word on the “other” coaching position? are candidates being interviewed?

any “leak” on who has applied?

it will be very interesting once the new coaches are hired and Coach Mack decides who will do what and what commotion it will cause, but better early and not just before Spring ball.

guess McKnight is not an applicant.

  144. el guapo February 14, 2009 5:21 pm

    Roysan,
Obviously a coach should not keep someone who is disruptive or is an otherwise bad influence. During the past season there was a certain QB whom the team might have been better off without since he was such a distraction. But these players were offered scholarships so they could play football and attend school.

What about the possible social benefits that you may lose by not renewing a player just because he is fourth on the depth chart? Someone who may go on to be a successful high school coach who sends his players here. Or better yet, someone who becomes a successful businessman and donates large sums of money because he appreciates his education. Compare that to a bitter person who works against us. Besides, who made the mistake to think the kid would be a great player to begin with?

I do understand your point of view, just don’t agree with it if talent is the issue. It was better in the days when the agreements were for the entire four years.

  145. bighilofan2 February 14, 2009 5:31 pm

    Roysan 16

first off, your clarity is brilliant. and you make a case for your point of view. ButttttT, I happen to agree with the Guapo’s point of view. When you commit, you commit. You gotta have that mindset. Human beings fall down. Guarantee! I happen to believe in second chances. Society agrees with me on. The Mulligans come to mind.

I also agree we don’t have to wait for the Dishonorable Discharge to trim the wood. Some demonstrations of lack of discipline warrant discipline more than others. I think the cream of the crop always benefit when their understudies provide some relief and support in their efforts to be the stars. Just goes to show the coaches make the call, and they should be stuck with the call for more than a year, maybe not 4, but definitely those we chose to become Warriors gotta be given a chance when there is skimpy evidence that they are not trying their best.

    >>WBB team was so distracted that the Bolla’s weren’t there they committed, what 30 turnovers? must have kept looking at the bench and not concentrating.

    A-House,

The turnovers are nothing new. I think this is the second time they’ve hit 30 TOs this year. Same thing last year — they tend to kill themselves by giving the ball up. Bolla was hoping for better ball handling with this current group of players, but the style and pace they’re shooting for requires quick decisions and reactions, and they haven’t shown that they’re capable of sustaining that sort of concentration over the course of 40 minutes — especially when they’re worried about the reaction they’ll get if they mess up. I think it’s curious that, at least in the practices I’ve attended, they don’t spend much time practicing the transition game against actual defenders.

  150. Da Punchbowl Kid February 14, 2009 5:40 pm

When I look back at the WBB coach’s credentials, he get da palapala.

But besides having great food to serve, which is a must in any successful restaurant, presentation is another key factor. using the same analogy, Mr. Bolla became eBolla to many of us, so many that his team has no following. Heck, get choke high school girls teams that show as good a following as UHM basketball, and that is NOT NOT NOT GOOD! not good for UH. not good for the State. not good for Warrior Nation. the Girls gotta look good too, not just the Guyz.

i want to be part of the group that gets the UH student athlete feeling good about themselves individually, thinking and believing there is hope for each of them in their futures. some will play samoa at the next level, some will become coaches, some will become teachers, some will run fire departments, police departments, business, be leaders in other things and other wayz. and in some way we, Warrior Nation, can pat our backs in some small way, knowing we’re helping out Hawaii feel good about us in Hawaii. . that is what I hope for us this Valentines Day. Lots of Love for and from the Student Athletes at UH. Especially our Warriors!

    bh2 guapo

in this age of college football so much emphasis is placed on teams putting the best team and the best players on the field

    why?

having a good team can have an affect on attendance, chances of bowl game money , espn picking up the game and better recruits coming into the program. and this all adds up to money.

Now with so much money at stake and pressure to perform, does it behoove a coach to be nice. And keep an under performing player because it seemed like the nice thing to do. Or to keep his door open to the best 85 scholarship players. And if that includes walkons joining the program and earning scholarship then so be it. And if they’re better than a player that has a scholarship then it follows with tenement of putting the best team together and releasing the old and bringing in the new.. This is bear bryant, bobby knight way, and june (even when he was here) all winning formulas.

People should understand that even the walkons fall thru the cracks and coaches find that they were unrecruited, yet there just as good as a player on the roster.

So if coaches, now and then, find walk ons that are good what’s the best way to reward them?

It’s unpopular to cut a scholarship player, but the coach mindset should be on winning, not pleasing.

If the UH gets a reputation of rewarding scholarships to it’s walkon players I’d venture to say the players, locally and nationally, that fell thru the cracks, would take a chance on trying out at uH.

Having such competition in trying to earn a spot on the roster. And extracting from the best pool of players is a winning formula. Even having the scholarship players looking over their shoulders can be productive on a team in the long run, for no one player will become complacent..This is the new wave. And a lot more college teams we’re seeing are going this way.

It’s unfair to cut the scholarship players, I know. But that’s the direction that teams have to take in this money, commercialized induced environment. Bottom line teams have to perform. And the coaches have to put together the best team of players on the field..

the scholarship contract is like you said for only one year. this gives both the institution and the athlete a pre written ‘out clause’.

ST, whatever happened to Tennessee’s woman’s shortstop from Kam school, i think her name was Horiuchi or something like that, she had a scenario that was not in her best interest at that time.

it’s a contract, there are academic, physical and individual benchmarks that the student-athlete must maintain to get the contract renewed.

    my 2 sense 😉

  177. bighilofan2 February 14, 2009 8:01 pm

i hear you Roysan16. sounds good. i like be like Obama. say sometin fo errybody. main thing, keep your word. life is not a guarantee. players gotta know that. coach gotta act like that.

so far as i know, we don’t have that kind of problem, do we? are not our problems handled through attrition and ineptitude, for the most part? so if we just hypothesizing, i say.. ummm… give the coach 3 years. 😀

  178. Bulla February 14, 2009 8:06 pm

the HC has to hire coaches, and not people that he needs to micromanage. his job is to coach the coaches, and the coaches coach the players. very easy formula, and when it is done properly….success is inevitable, most times.

  179. Bulla February 14, 2009 8:10 pm

it’s like being married and having control issues…..husband and wife, let’s not compete, let’s complete…. the task of raising our children in a healthy loving environment….

some HC’s feel they need to be ‘in’ on every decision…..instead of letting decisions being made and observing the result. how does a coach gain confidence if the HC is breathing over their shoulder every minute? you’re right, they don’t….so they either stay and hope to ‘develop’ their abilities or they leave for other programs…….it’s a business, nothing more and nothing less.

actually, i think Coach Mack is doing a great job for his first gig as the Coach. i’m hoping he picks one sidekick and sticks wit dat bugga in da 4th quarter, calling da shots. all for one, one for all. last year, imho, da “losses” were because of coaching, not the players. the coaches got da tap out mentality and couldn’t convince the players otherwise, to rise to da next level. they lost the mind game against Cincy, for example, plain and simple. not dat Cincy wasn’t a good team. still yet, we lost because da sack went missing in da final minutes.

and you ain’t gonna convince me oddawize. no sir.

    very proverbial, very true

you wrote similarly about this a few months ago

the associate head coach imo should be the one taking a big part overlooking discipline

on the team, on the field and off

imo he should be doing a better job

    i’ll be the one….

hang this loss on the coach.

we keep playing not to lose in the last few minutes of the game. every time we have a lead we take time off the clock instead of keep pushing it. why stop playing the way that got us there in the first place????

why put in a reserve in the prime time minutes of a game when he has a penchant for turnovers and making lolo plays, i.e. fouling a guy with a obvious two point lay in when you still have a small lead?

yah, we missed free throws and many lay ups, but, we still should have won if we played to win, played smart, and played with the right guys on the court.

    …nuff said.

    okay….

    closing minutes of the game.
    which team has more pressure?
the one ahead or the one behind?

the one behind has the pressure to execute, come from behind, make plays, etc. so if you are ahead all you gotta do is put the game out of reach, how do you do that?

    score more points.

    take it to them.
close the door on the game.
bury your opponent, make up give up, quit.

defense minded coaches tend to coach opposite. sure defense wins games, but, how do you win?
    you out score them!!!
    that hasn’t changed has it?

i know, it is not only basketball, its football too. cincy game for example(yah, i agree with bhf2 on this game).

    …nuff said, one more time.

actually, michelle wie turned pro in 2005 and played samsung world championship as her first start as a professional. in 2006 alone, she played in 9 lpga events all as a pro. Up to today, wie has played in 49 lpga events and 14 mens professional events. although she has yet to win a tournament, there is no question that she is experienced.

Picture an athlete that graduated from the UH that reached the pinnacle of her sport by winning five LPGA tournaments and two other amateur tournaments here in Hawaii. And yet she isn’t in the UH circle of honor.

Her name is often mentioned along side other distinguished alumni from UH

Ms.Cindy Rarick is a graduate of the University of Hawaii , where she attended on a golf scholarship (early ’80’s). At UH she was known as Cindy Flom.

Is she deserving? I think so. In comparison to others circle of honor inductees and looking at their athletic achievements next to Ms.Cindy Rarick successes she should definitely have been considered.

    Long overdue? I think so.

As I understand it, anyone can declare him/herself as a professional golfer by showing skill in the game – winning Jr. championships for example or making the cut in a professional game as an amateur. However, the mere fact that you have declared yourself as a professional golfer, does not, in and of itself, permit you to play in any professional golf game/tournament.

But to be a professional playing on the tour, you have to have a qualification license – Q-School in the PGA or LPGA and if you get one, you can play on the tour. Otherwise you would have to have a sponsor’s exemption to play.

The SBS is the first golf game Michelle can play as a legitimate professional because of her Q-card and of course has to make the cut. In the other games that she played, she was given an exemption from the rule that requires you to have a qualification card.

Whether she is a rookie pro or an old-timer pro, the $108,000+ she got today blurs the distinction!

  208. Jason February 14, 2009 10:27 pm

That was a heck of a basketball game tonight. I’m disappointed we lost, but it was a good showing. The defensive intensity has picked up so much for UH, I absolutely love it. Frustrated how we played in the last couple minutes, though.

I don’t disagree with the complaints about playing to not lose vs. playing to win, but that’s part coaching philosophy, part player confidence (i.e., do the players know what it takes to finish a game, and can they execute?). What I do want to complain about was the terrible officiating. How the heck do you let someone cheap shot Balocka like that, and not call anything? I thought not having him in the second half hurt us. Not that Campbell’s bad, cause he adds a really nice length element at center, but Balocka was having a good game until then. I thought that hurt us in the second half.

And there were many, many calls that were just wrong, made when they shouldn’t have been, and not made when they should have been. And geez, Nevada was getting away with some serious holding down low. I thought basketball was a non-contact sport? I mean, you let some stuff go, but geez. It’s hard to pick up unless you’re close to the court, but I’m right there and it was blatantly obvious. But the refs haven’t been calling that stuff consistently all year. They call ticky-tack stuff on us, and let other teams do whatever they want. I want consistency and clarity on what will be considered an infraction and what won’t be.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention earlier — great crowd at the basketball game tonight. It was one of the larger ones in recent memory, and they were very vocal and active.

What was really funny was that there were these two Nevada fans sitting behind me in the UH student section. Looked like a college student and her mother. They tried distracting the UH players shooting free throws in the first half, but that didn’t work; when they stopped, then we started missing. They were pretty quiet in the second half, as everybody else was pretty vocal for UH. But yeah, they were kind of funny. I told them I would need to confiscate the UH towel they get for sitting in those seats. 😀

Ralph, i understand that she is classified as a rookie on LPGA and there are others including Ji Yai Shin, who won the 2008 British open and ADT championship last year who, believe it or not, is also considered a “rookie”. Shin also turned pro in 2006.
Apparently, when a player gains tour membership, then the LPGA recognizes that player and hence her first year will be considered her rookie year. I think its ridiculous esp. for Ji Yai Shin who has already won a womens major and 2 LPGA events.
Again, I never stated she wasnt a rookie on lpga, I just corrected tom who stated that the SBS was “her first start as a pro”. It wasnt.

Tom, that is far out reasoning. No matter which way you want to spin it, the 2009 SBS Open is not “her first start as a pro”, as in your own words.
So based on your reasoning, like I told Ralph, another LPGA pro, Ji Yai Shin is also considered a “rookie” because this is considered her first year on LPGA as a member with Q card. However, unlike Michelle Wie, Ji Yai Shin is already a two time LPGA winner, including a major championship, 2008 British Open. Based on your reasoning, Ji Yai Shin wasnt a pro either?? maybe she should return the money she won too?
Tom, find me once source of info that would state michelle wie wasnt a professional golfer since 2005 Sam sung and I will retract my statements.
Otherwise, you are giving false information.

imho again nash need to match intensity of the nevada coach and get into the faces of some of these referee’s so they don’t get intimidated by the other guy. hell this is his house sh_t man protect it.

  232. kama krab February 14, 2009 11:37 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

Al I gotta agree with you even though I don’t want to. The boys down the stretch where playing not to lose and where very tentative. I do believe it came down to the coaching. Not pushing the ball and kinda going into basketballs version of a prevent defense, while they were on offense.

I also gotta agree with Jason on the argument about the refs. They totally sucked eggs this game. On both sides they where just making some dumb calls. But it is what it is and we gotta move on. The boyz are working hard and you can see in every effort they are putting out on the court. I still believe that Coach Nash can do it, but things like tonight’s game can not happen to much more times or else it might be a short lived tenure for him.

  233. Jason February 14, 2009 11:41 pm

Just saw that now, koakane. I apologize to the refs and Nevada for that. Sure looked like a cheap shot from where I was.

That doesn’t excuse all the other bad calls, though.

  234. roysan16 February 14, 2009 11:42 pm

    jon–223

what tom said is not wrong

    1. he said turning pro/ declaring herself a pro doesn’t automatically make the pro golfer a tour player
    2. in the past michelle played on a sponsors exemption
    3. this recent tournament was her first with a tour card thru q-school

    these are all true

as pro golfer with now with her first touring card she is refered as a rookie

    this is true

I’ll add that for michelle or any other golfer retaining a tour card she has to finish in the top 80 to retain her tour card for the following year

if a golfer is out of the top 80 then its back to q school and then the person has to finish in the top 17

in the past she had nonexempt status meaning she had 10 free passes or sponsors exemptions a year

what she was hoping to do in the past was to get her touring card thru being the top 90 on the money lists-and that didn’t work

so she went to q school this past december and got exempt status this year

    jon-

and this is a ball park figure of what amount of money woud be needed to be in the top 80 on the LPGA tour

below is the 2008 money list thru nov 23

with a win of 110k at the SBS open it looks like michelle is more than on her way in securing her card for the 2010 year.

how many layups and put backs for probable stuffs did we miss. Balocka alone missed four from underneath the basket altho he got some ft out of them…campbell should have stuffed it, weak foul, and he missed the put back.flemming missed a layup and asked for a foul call, no luck, he should have stuffed it on the fly…any of these shots would have given the warriors a one point victory….got to finished the shot under the basket….

    More on Michelle

I was just looking at the advertisers article and pictures of Michelle, and what’s noticeable is the gold watch she wearing. Looks like a rolex. But wouldn’t a golfer find wearing a watch be kind of restricting and cumbersome? Thought it was unusual –first time i’ve noticed her wearing a gold watch.

  238. al ™ February 15, 2009 12:16 am

how about your point guard not looking at the forward with the ball as they go down backcourt side, only to have a pass whizz right by him in the most critical possession of the waning moments of a close game?

i am sure he won’t make that mistake ever again.

  239. al ™ February 15, 2009 12:19 am

roysan16…maybe it was a counterbalance? i heard that rolex’s are very heavy.

  240. Ralph February 15, 2009 12:21 am

Al it’s called tunnel vision-poor court awareness and seeing space and passing lanes….good reason why we lose so many games

  241. roysan16 February 15, 2009 12:25 am

    More on Michelle

of course soon as I google and look at more pictures of michelle she always wearing a watch..she is fashionable. Is it my eyes playing tricks on me or are her skirts seem to be a little shorter?

    zzz.

  242. Jason February 15, 2009 12:27 am

Ralph: Wow, talk about negativity. Never mind that the team has taken tremendous strides in recent weeks.

I hope this loss tonight will be a learning experience for them. As pride likes to say, they have tools now. The offense has been simplified, and you can tell in warmups that now they are taking the time that used to be used for teaching the system, and now they are teaching skill sets. Now, they need to learn how to win a close game against a good opponent. They did not pass that test tonight, but more opportunities will come.

  243. Ralph February 15, 2009 12:33 am

Na Wahine split in softball, 2-7 for the season….Only Milca and Warwick putting the ball in play consistently….

  244. d1島 February 15, 2009 12:40 am

Congrats to Iolani for their futbol championship. (Sorry Ralph)

Nice time at Big City Diner with very good company!

    LizK,

Don’t think Genji get any Phantom tunes; probably Audy though 😆

  245. Ralph February 15, 2009 12:43 am

Jason the team is 12-12, and 4-8 in the WAC,only five games left in the season and one of the games is with Irvine…how big a learning curve do you want, the season is almost over…all college teams go thru a transition of players due to graduation, its the coaches responsibility to recruit accordingly. and its not like Nash and Wheeler are new to the program and the offense is something they are just putting together…they just got to crank it at a faster pace….

  246. Ralph February 15, 2009 12:47 am

didn’t Nash sign a three year contract…we’re in year two, and he has one or possibly two scholies for next year…so basically, without any seniors, what you see is what you get next season. I don’t think it is negative to state that the level of play is poor, because it is obvious they are struggling..the team was up by 6 with 1’40” and lost by one…what happened! bad passes and ball control…

  247. Ralph February 15, 2009 12:53 am

with less that a minute to play UH did not get off any good shots…Nitoto’s shot was a last second prayer shot and thompsons drive and shot didn’t touch glass or rim…

  248. Ralph February 15, 2009 12:54 am

didn’t seem like they had a set play for someone to take the shot or a second option

  265. bighilofan2 February 15, 2009 3:25 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

wondering what a 5 star Oline recruit looks like? google nick alajajian, get 3 minute pro type video about da kid. multi-tasking kinda guy. i betcha brian smith would look good if he had a recruit like dat.

Better yet, I’m vibing brian smith will look good by coachin da recruits to look like dat. 😀

  266. bighilofan2 February 15, 2009 4:17 am

Jim Bolla is on a paid indefinite leave, his wife is on a recruiting trip. how much longer this is gonna go on, hard to say. but we know this much. one more week till the end of women’s basketball season. we all could feel the vibe from last year already. he wanted to go, went to Vegas, tried. the girls just never respond positively to him, whatever the reason. the fans took the cue and did likewise. thats the truth. so best for him if he find employment elsewhere.

  267. bighilofan2 February 15, 2009 4:18 am

maybe Temple get one opening at women’s basketball. 😀

  268. bighilofan2 February 15, 2009 4:26 am

Herman Frazier is now the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sports Administration at Temple University. Good for him. The Lady Owls are having a pretty good season, beating good name schools, so I dunno if they’re looking for a new women’s basketball coach just yet. But the point is that someone having a bad hair day in one place can find a comfy niche someplace else if they got the skills. Bolla got the skills.
he’s in a lose lose situation now, so the sooner he moves on, the better for him. just hope the wife doesn’t jam up the recruiting, and coordinates with Charity so UH can make the best of things for next year.

This is Bolla’s 5th year. So he can’t blame anyone but himself for his recruiting, the players we get and the way things have gone south for UH women’s basketball.

The grade is … junk… and dats a fact!

  269. bighilofan2 February 15, 2009 4:33 am

Bolla can talk all he like dat we, da fans, don’t know what we talking about. maybe so. but we sure know what poor performance looks like, and when he’s coaching during the game, and we watching the team get double beat, and we watching him while the team getting beat over and over, what else we need for reach da conclusions we’ve reached? its really not about da money to me. its about making us believe he really has UH women’s basketball as his love and passion. i don’t get dat vibe, i really don’t.

so if you lookin for support Virginia, look no fahdah. right here girlfriend, right here.

  270. bighilofan2 February 15, 2009 4:52 am

no matter what the sport, play calling is a biggie. last nite’s bb game, last minute play calling wasn’t… ummm…. spiffy.

maybe Bob spent too much time watching our Warriors play calling last season. we’re gonna do better this year. right? Coach?

  271. bighilofan2 February 15, 2009 4:53 am

okay, time out for a few.

    Good Morning ‘way far’ wafan!

  276. Bulla February 15, 2009 6:11 am

    good morning Tsaikos,

blessings to all on this day, the Lord’s day 🙂

mahalo ralph for the 411 on Horiuchi transferring to Purdue. i was more curious about the post season ‘jockeying’ by the softball coach where she was at…. thought it was strange at best…..that’s all.

UH Men’s Basketball, hmmmmm, how much is an unused timeout worth after the game is over? EXACTLY…….

had to deal with that 2 years ago in a HS football championship game, but we kept 2 time outs to use for after the game, sorry d1, i just can’t let that one go, to this day i have nightmares……ouch.

Al, enjoy the 9 am service…i plan to visit Pastor Dom at sand island next week, needed to get in touch with him.

I hope that everyone had a memorable Valentines Day with their loved ones yesterday…….but I was thinking to myself (strange but true, i do think Homey), why do we have to wait for that ONE DAY, to make her feel special?

what happened to ‘spur of the moment’, or ‘just because….’, or ‘surprise!’???

to all the male Tsaikos, i ask you to reflect for a moment what your life would be like if your wife/significant other were no longer with you…for whatever reason……life would be different for many of us.

don’t wait for Valentines day to show your love…..you can say it, but actions speak LOUDER than words. funny thing is, that on Valentines day it is expected, imagine how much sweeter it would be if you ‘surprised’ her on a ‘normal’ day? what’s a few dollars spent if it will get you unabashed appreciation? and you all know, ‘IF MOMMA AIN’T HAPPY, AIN’T NOBODY HAPPY’….so get with it.

and that goes for your mothers also, before you were married or had a girlfriend, your mom was always there…..and in your eyes, she should ALWAYS be your 1st Valentine…..ALWAYS. you want to know the meaning of joy…call your mom up today and tell her you love her, and that you were sorry you forgot about Valentines day…….all of 5 minutes, and you will bring so much joy to your mom’s heart today. do it, and see what happens.

have a blessed day to one and all,

  277. Garret February 15, 2009 6:14 am

    roysan16,

I’m sorry if you thought I was trying to embarrass you–that was not my intent! I was confused by how your post directed people to the other paper when I saw the article in the Advertiser before seeing your post. Later on you mentioned that the Advertiser’s website was messed up at the time–that would explain your problem, it wouldn’t be the first time the webmasters messed things up for the Advertiser!

  278. Garret February 15, 2009 6:16 am

I hope that everyone had a great time yesterday! My Valentines plans turned out just as I had hoped, which was great…

  279. Garret February 15, 2009 6:34 am

There was an interesting discussion earlier on this blog on JJ not renewing the scholarships of those players. Both sides made good points, but I am on the side of roysan16 on this issue. There is more to the story, which most people here probably don’t know about.

    Two points of information:

    1. Almost all of the players affected definitely violated the “3 strikes” policy, missing team meetings, study halls, or classes. That is easy to track because they were suspended during the season for those offenses–which also included the suspensions of the top 2 WRs and others from games. Some players (like the WRs) apparently did the punishments required (early morning step running, ec.) and didn’t mess up again…and I’m guessing we just saw the result of those who messed up again.

    2. It is clear that many of the recruits from SMU’s previous coach did not “buy in” to the new coaching staff. For example, I’ve read a lot of reports about how some players were laughing and joking around on the sidelines while the team was losing the last game of the season, not paying attention to the game and the coaches…I’d bet those players were among those who had their scholarships not renewed. Warrior fans wouldn’t tolerate that type of behavoir on the sidelines of games!

Many other schools also pulled scholarships, but SMU was one of the only ones that I noticed arranging for scholarships to be available at other schools if the affected players wanted to continue their football careers. Texas A&M just pulled 13 football scholarships and did not arrange for the players to get scholarships at other schools like JJ did. The news also did not get as widely publicized, probably because other schools have been doing this for years and this was the first time SMU did it.

  280. Bulla February 15, 2009 7:03 am

    Garret

your are right, it’s bust business, and the sooner the student athletes realize that, the better off they’ll be. ROI, return on investment, is what the coaches and administration are looking for. if they’re going to invest thousands, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in you by giving you a scholarship, what kind of return with they get for their program?

the rewards are great, but the sacrifices are many….but it is so worth it.

  281. Kekoa February 15, 2009 7:08 am

Garret & Roysan16 ~ Mahalo to both of you for trying very hard to provide good, up-to-date, inside information on UH athletics. It’s not always easy to cut thru to the truth, and you both are sticklers for details. It’s healthy for the blog members to know that what we get from you guys has been screened and ready to take to the bank.

I don’t always have time to say thank you, so for at least this 15th day of Feb., left me shout it out in gratitude for what you both provide.

    Thank you!

Besides that I guess we gotta be grateful that our sons had the opportunity when so many others never got so close….

  285. Jason February 15, 2009 8:15 am

I see you guys said UH had one timeout left, and I checked the box score — you guys are right. But the scoreboard said UH was out of timeouts. I remember Hiram called the “last” timeout when he was being pressured near half-court. I recall thinking that could haunt us if the game ended up being close at the end and we needed to set up an offensive play. After Johnson’s shot at the end for Nevada, I thought UH should call timeout, then realized there were none left. But the box score does say UH had one:

    http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/custompages/Stats/Mbskb/021409.HTM#GAME.PLY

    In fact, note Dayton’s article:

    http://sports.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/20090215/SPORTS0204/902150413/1032&template=UHSports

The ‘Bows were out of timeouts, so Thompson drove the length of the court after Johnson’s shot put Nevada ahead.

I’m guessing K5 kept correct track, but the scoreboard said otherwise, and the coaches depend on the scoreboard for that. That is definitely something the WAC needs to look into. I’m not saying UH would have won, but it would have been nice to be able to set up a play, at least, or maybe call timeout on that play when the shot clock was winding down and Nitoto ended up shooting a rushed three.

  286. Jason February 15, 2009 8:19 am

No, wait, never mind, I’m still half asleep. I counted four timeouts, and that’s how many UH had. So they did indeed have no timeouts.

  287. d1島 February 15, 2009 8:23 am

    Jason,

IIRC when I looked at the scoreboard at the end it showed one left….

    …and “No” I wasn’t drinking last night! 😆

  288. TOM February 15, 2009 8:25 am

    roysan16: thank you!

Don’t mean to get into a shouting match about golfers and who is a pro and who is not.

But Ji Yai Shi became a pro by declaring as such and was recognized by the Korean LPGA (KLPGA) and got into various matches, including the ones that she won abroad.

She is recognized in the US as a rookie because she has become a member of LPGA. Previously she got into the various US matches as a member of KLPGA.

I suppose it is akin to a doctor being educated and trained in a foreign country, coming to the US and having to go through licensing here in order to practice in the US.

Sorry about the apples and oranges argument here!

  289. Jason February 15, 2009 8:27 am

d1: Wait, I’m confused now. This is what happens when I don’t get enough sleep. I’m not sure which of those timeouts listed for UH were media timeouts, I didn’t factor that in. But I swear, I thought we had no timeouts, and Dayton’s article says the same.

Oh wait we lost by 1
    .
    .
    Then Terrrible lost.
    Too many missed free throws.
Too many folks standing around on offense looking lost
    Too many turn overs.
Some say it’s Nevada and we are lucky to have played it close
I say close only counts in Horse Shoes and Hand Grenades.

You only have four timeouts in the second half. But as I said, I can’t tell which of those were media timeouts. If I counted it right, it says UH had two timeouts left. So I’m not sure how they record those. But I swear, I saw one timeout, then Hiram called the “last” one.

Anyways, I need to get ready for church. I’ll let someone smarter than me figure this out. Maybe someone who recorded the game can look at it?

    Jason,

A team gets less TO’s in the second half than the first?
    Media TO’s are charged/scored to a team?
Why does Reno have 5 versus UH have 4?

I defer to you because I am a much more casual CBB fan…

    Jason,

We were sitting there with d1 and looked at the scoreboard as soon as Nevada scored their last basket. There was one timeout left on the scoreboard and I swear midori and I were yelling, “Call a timeout! Call a timeout! Why didn’t they call that last timeout?” 👿

It’s easy to blame the coaches, but these are experienced basketball players now and they should always be aware of their options. They are the ones playing the game and have to think about the possible scenarios. They are Division 1 basketball players so this loss can be laid on the whole team; players and coaches.

Me, personally, I think that the atrocious free throw shooting did them in.

Oh and that officiating crew should be out of a job. That was the lamest (sorry C_C!) officiating that I have seen since…well the last UH game I attended with a few Tsaikos. 😯 They sucked! Ask UHFan808!

Why was Bobby Curran saying there was no timeouts left?

  300. d1島 February 15, 2009 8:58 am

Art. 10. When the electronic-media agreement calls for AT LEAST
THREE electronic-media timeouts in either half, the format shall be as
follows (TELEVISION, RADIO OR INTERNET AUDIO OR VISUAL
BROADCAST AND PAID ADVERTISING MUST BE PRESENT TO USE
    THIS ELECTRONIC-MEDIA TIMEOUT FORMAT):
    a. Four 30-second timeouts for each team per regulation game.
    1. Each team may carry up to three 30-second timeouts into the
    second half.

    b. One 60-second timeout for each team per regulation game that may
be used any time during the game.

So Reno got an extra TO in the second half?

what tom said is not wrong

    1. he said turning pro/ declaring herself a pro doesn’t automatically make the pro golfer a tour player
    2. in the past michelle played on a sponsors exemption
    3. this recent tournament was her first with a tour card thru q-school

    these are all true

roysan16, I never disputed anything tom said except the statement he made that his tournament was her “first start as a pro”. that is incorrect roysan, as I pointed out earlier, she turned pro at the samsung in 2005.

as pro golfer with now with her first touring card she is refered as a rookie

    this is true

I’ll add that for michelle or any other golfer retaining a tour card she has to finish in the top 80 to retain her tour card for the following year

if a golfer is out of the top 80 then its back to q school and then the person has to finish in the top 17

in the past she had nonexempt status meaning she had 10 free passes or sponsors exemptions a year

what she was hoping to do in the past was to get her touring card thru being the top 90 on the money lists-and that didn’t work

so she went to q school this past december and got exempt status this year

yes, roysan16, no disagreements by your above statements, things I knew already. all I wanted to clear up was that this was not her first start as a pro, thats it.
