Based on 2010-2011 year, I can tell you that UH had an operating cost (football) of $8,860,417 and generated revenue of $7,684,363. Whereas, Penn State football had an operating cost of $19,519,288 and revenue of $72,747,734.

NCAA says any Penn State player who wants to transfer out can do so without the penalty of sitting out a year. they relaxed the rules about contact too. for current players as well as players who signed LOIs and were going to play for the first time this year.

it seems like a few schools in the ACC going to make out. maybe going after one highly sought after player will open the doors for other players too. Nittany Lions online has the scoops.

Hi everybody! I think the penalties levied on Penn State are appropriate.

Well, it would be wise for Greenwood and associates to be as transparent as possible when the investigation is concluded. If questions go unanswered, that leads to speculation. And thats not good for the UH to move forward.

As to who’s fault it was, thats up to the administration as they collect the data and evaluate. However, when theirs fault to be placed it usually ends up being the guy on the bottom, even though their intentions good.

I think that upper campus administrators delegated authority and left it up to JD to initiate and finalize the dealings with the concert. If that proves to be accurate then everyone should shoulder a portion of the blame. Of course, no one is going to admit fault, especially at the top of the food chain.

Hopefully, this investigation doesn’t take forever to get some answers. Don’t like the idea of this hovering when the season starts.

This is the last night on our 10 Day Baltic & Scandinavian Cruise on the Holland America Cruise Ship Eurodam.The time has gone really fast and the Cruise was Fantastic with some Awesome new memories. I will send some notes to SteveM later about the Cruise Highlights.

I haven’t reallly been able to lurk as I had originally planned. So was there any major UH news that I missed in the last 10 days? Any updates on the Stevie Wonder situation? Last I heard, Jim Donovan and Rich Sheriff were placed on leave.

The weather in this area was raining for about 2 weeks before we got here. I guess we brought the Hawaiian Sunshine with us because the weather has been just gorgeous almost everywhere we went. Today in Hamburg Germany was picture postcard perfect.

It’s going to take a while to get back to Hawaii. Going by way of London. Not stayin for the Olympics though.

Penn State had two sophomore punters last year. Fera appears to be the better one.

re: all those who’d like a 13th game

Remember that a 13th game would require UH to win 7 games (instead of the current 6) to get into a bowl game. Why make it hardewr for the team and reward Penn State. There’s more downside than upside in that equation. We also don’t need to pick up their tarnish.

Yes. It is unfair to the student-athletes today. They now have to leave or just stop playing football. Friendships lost, relationships uprooted, etc.. not good for the innocent.

I do enjoy the financial penalties though. This is where it hurts them the most. However, the financial penalties should reflect the # of profitable years in which they discovered the cover up to the present day.

Cant put a price on lies that destroyed young innocent lives, but $60 million ain’t enough.

I believe getting a PSU player, especially a starter or recruit to come to UH is a long shot, especially if the student/athlete is from the east coast, yet I like the fact that Coach is going to give it a shot. The worse thing to do is to do nothing. Getting a “no” at least tells you what you need to do to possibly get a “yes” the next time you are in a similar situation.

Bookem Coach! Hope we can get a couple players out of this, definately would be nice to get a Kicker or a TE. PSU also well known for LBs, I’m sure they are deep in that position so even if we can’t get a starter one of the 2nd string LBs would be a great pick up!

Krump: so regardless if we play PS in a thirteenth game or not we have to win six games. If the game was to be played I would hope that beating a downed PS football program would not be that difficult…I would like the opportunity of the chance. We can’t be worried of one game to get to the next level and bowl games. Like coach Chow said “We will chase championships”…not dodge them.

This has been an antsy offseason for the University of Hawai‘i football team. In past years, the coaches would cut 30 or so players at the end of spring practice in April to make room for incoming freshmen and junior-college transfers……

Anyone who does not get the punishment probably doesn’t understand what is being punished. Penn STate is not being punished by the NCAA because Sandusky raped boys. Penn State is being punished by the NCAA because they placed the good of the football program above the good of past and future victims. The leaders of PSU listened to the football coach rather than their own good judgment and the law. THAT is lack of institutional control and THAT is what is being punished. Sure, the current football players are probably innocents being hurt. But if they don’t punish PSU severely and NOW, what message are we sending? Just keep things under wraps until all guilty parties are gone because we don’t want to punish innocents? that makes no sense.

I know a rape victim personally. Which is more than most ever encounter. While not a rape victim in this case. There is never any justice.

kevin, just read the ncaa consent decree with psu and all of the student athetes are deemed innocent by the ncaa, and as a result, they also have been given permission to transfer wtihout penalties or can remain at psu on scholarship till they graduate. the athletes don’t have to play football to retain their scholies. the psu president signed the ncaa consent decree and will not be challenging it.

okie dokie. well that possibly could explain the behavior from 1998-2001. But what about after the 2001 incident. Your argument suggests that even though an assistant coach saw Sandusky raping a boy in the showers and reported it to Paterno, then Paterno didn’t have to do anything because Sandusky wasn’t convicted. Is that really what you mean? I really hope not. Like I said, there are many in the PSU community who think like you, which is why they are getting sanctioned.

YOur argument is also circular. How was sandusky going to be convicted if the incident was never reported to the police? Paterno for sure could and should have prevented any assaults after the 2001 incident. But he sat idle. This is egregious especially considering that he was aware of the 1998 investigations.

Personally, I think some folks are missing the point here regarding Penn State. Many are saying that the NCAA “overstepped” their boundaries or that their penalties went too far and hurt a lot of innocent players and people who had nothing to do with the crime. Remember, the sanctions and penalties are NOT about individuals, it’s about PENN STATE UNIVERSITY. Due to the crimes and negligence of the football team,YES, the TEAM of which JO PA was the head bull — they will ALL suffer the consequences. We can’t selectively dissect and remove certain entities from the equation — that is not how it works. Remember — When Penn State Football makes $60 million per year, that sum does not go to the football team only. It goes to the University. Whether it be in a library, the physics department, or the women’s center — football and Jo Pa revenues PERMEATED the university. Penn State is a storied NCAA institution, who is a member of the Big 10, who is also privy to BCS monies each and every year. By making that decision to be in this select club, THE UNIVERSITY has made riches beyond riches. And now, we are supposed to dissect the verdict and remove certain factors of the University? Sorry, that is not how it works. GUILTY!! And they will all feel the consequences. There is NO WAY to shape this pro-penn state. Mo betta they just scrap the whole thing and start over.

It’s all about the victims. All young boys whose lives were impacted forever. It’s all about them. Every thing else is manini.

Carefully, I have read everyone’s input regarding Penn State football. I agree, the Jerry Sandusky situation was perverse and unconscionable. However, it was neither Joe Paterno nor the current players and / or staff that did any of the wrong doing. I ask, why are they being punished. me, I’m an eye for eye kind of guy, Sandusky, I’m not going to apologize for this, but may you rot in hell, or worse. Um, hopefully worse.

Anyway, as far as I can tell, from what I read at least, the crimes were brought to Paterno’s attention, he went directly to administrators (like he’s supposed to), and THEN the “conspiracy of silence” began.

NCAA says the school is guilty of being complicit in Sandusky’s actions, okay, so why aren’t they all being prosecuted, or dealt with legally…..? That’s my big issue…..!!!!!!

GUAVA #229 NCAA is punishing the institution for putting the reputation of the institution first over the harm that may have been done to the minors.

It would be up to the State or local law enforcement agencies to prosecute. The University doesn’t have the power to do so.

The guilty parties beside Sandusky will be dealt with shortly. Thought I heard a report that PSU has set up a 1.5 billion dollar fund to settle the pending lawsuits by the victims, reportly getting 100 million each. that’s a lot of money but it will never be enough to overcome what happened to them.

What the NCAA did results in much discussion. If Sandusky was stopped sooner there would be less victims. Problem is that Jo Pa, the AD, President and others covered it up. Shame on them for that. Now the innocent must pay for their wrong doings.

The NCAA also erased 14 years of victories, wiping out 111 of Paterno’s wins and stripping him of his standing as the most successful coach in the history of big-time college football.

“Football will never again be placed ahead of educating, nurturing and protecting young people,” NCAA President Mark Emmert declared.

Penn State meekly accepted its punishment, pledging to hold itself to high standards of honesty and integrity.

Penn State spokesman David La Torre said university President Rodney Erickson had no choice but to acquiesce, given the threat of a total shutdown of the football program.

“It was clear Penn State faced an alternative — a long-term death penalty and additional sanctions for the program, university and whole community. Given the situation, he believed the sanctions offered and accepted was the appropriate and course of action,” La Torre said.

At a student union on campus, several dozen alumni and students gasped, groaned and whistled as they watched Emmert’s news conference. The news was a crushing blow to many students.

Nicole Lord, a senior, questioned why Penn State’s student body, and especially its athletes, should be punished “for the wrongs of three men and a monster.”
