R & R: Rants and Rambles from da Clueless Wahine

Howzit! It’s gonna be difficult to follow BIK and Mrs. C, but I’ll try.

On Sunday, I attended the MPI halau performance, entitled “R & R”. In keeping with that theme, I’m doing some R & R – ranting and rambling. So, here goes.

As has been stated many times on this blog and other places, the crowds at UH sports events tend to be older. UH needs to start getting the younger crowd to come in and the “free” student section is a start. BUT, I’d love to see more families at the events. I think we’re seeing that, especially at baseball and softball. As a parent, I’d like to see UH make student (HS & under) tickets available for the lower levels/sidelines. Right now, the kids are relegated to the upper levels/end zones. I’d be willing to pay a little more per ticket for the better seats. It would look better on TV and get the crowd more engaged. And if you’re not gonna cheer loud, then go sit upstairs!

Non-Manoa UH system students should also be to get reduced price tickets.

UH has a Kid’s Club, but nothing for teens. It would be great if there was a club or a section close to the UH student section for teens. Or even allow them to sit in the student section. Get them rooting for UH BEFORE they get college, so even if they don’t go to UH, you’ve got lifelong fans.

This past season, the Screechers and I joined the Warrior Volleyball booster club. It was a wonderful experience. The boys are some of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet and are always willing to talk to the fans. We will be back next year.

Here are some pictures from the Banquet held last month.

Good write up today by jm3409123870340123942938472938472!

I like the idea of ‘tweener pricing. Really need to do somthing to get those kids involved — in something more than electronics!

  11. Michigan Warrior May 11, 2011 3:51 am

    Morning, everyone!

Great to see some of our concerns in regards to getting a younger fan base voiced by JM! Also good to see mention of allowing non-UH-Manoa students the opportunity to purchase those student activity packages.

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

I think jm brings up a good discussion item. How can we get more UH students to the games?? They have free transportation and tickets to football but not a lot of student take advantage. Arena sports are a little better but still lacking.

  14. Stretch May 11, 2011 4:22 am

    Condolences MW.

Early morning greetings to my personal pastry Chef. I vote for your Triple C cake, but with one eye scanning the horizon for the Bread Pudding!

Re: seating issues and wot not. All is poho cuz SSC needs to hire more spirited students to usher the crowd.

Like trying out for the pep squad, you gotta have more *Mento Manoa Maniacs* in the aisle pumpin’ up the crowd! Energize and encourage the fans to yell, scream, wave banners, make all kine at the opposing players (like A-Joe & Stretch).

Ok…now that I’ve had my chance to R&R, I’m going back into hibernation. BBL jm22.9, you look good in the driver’s seat girl!

  16. Garret May 11, 2011 4:39 am

I figured this might happen when JJ had Colt throw to RGM in front of Glanville after one of the Spring Practices at SMU…RGM just signed with Hartford. Colt throwing again to RGM will be great for both of them and I look forward to seeing their games (I think they plan to offer them free online).

Speaking of special teams, exRoughriders returner Ryan Grice-Mullen has signed with the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League.

  17. Kekoa May 11, 2011 4:46 am

Oh…try wait. More students should be chosen as participants in contest’s that encourage them to make signs or costumes that promote the team.

Then award the winnerz with worthwhile prizes that will help them in class. How about a $100 gift certificate for use in the bookstore…or an ipad!?

I know that would be enuff incentive for students to attend if they knew this was an ongoing promotion. Just keep it fresh.

  18. gigi-hawaii May 11, 2011 4:47 am

    jm,

who’s the guy in the pictures who doesn’t have any lei? Poor thing! I feel sorry for him. And he definitely does not look happy!

  19. rage777 May 11, 2011 4:48 am

    jm2375,

As one of the people supporting student participation, I like your post. I have said it before and I will say it again, you need to get the UH students involved with the sports. And not only that, put them in front of the cameras. Have you seen a Duke basketball game where they pan out and show the students cheering their team on before they make the first basket. It’s electric and exciting, that’s what we need. Have UH marketing students come up with some ideas, or other ways of getting UH students involved in the whole experience. Good for the resume and good for UH.

I also agree about the younger children, but I am not sure how to go about that unless the parents are involved. So maybe more family ticket pricing, 2 adults + 2 children + 4 hotdogs + 4 drinks, for a certain price.

  20. Kekoa May 11, 2011 4:48 am

Whoa! Good news Mr. G! Just wait until they start lighting up the scoreboards!

  21. Garret May 11, 2011 4:57 am

I agree about student discounts! Getting a new generation of fans is key to UH Athletics and UH should be more aggressive at trying to make it more enticing for families and kids to attend sporting events. Kids also bring in full-priced adults with them and I think that families spend quite a bit on concessions–and UH gets the money from concessions at the SSC.

This is one of the few examples where I think that even budget-strapped UH should sacrifice potential short-term revenue losses due to the long-term growth possibilities. Plus, discounted ticket buyers still bring in revenue and that is ticket money and concession money that UH wouldn’t have otherwise.

  22. Garret May 11, 2011 4:58 am

Off to work now…yesterday was a 13-hour day and when I got off work there were so many posts that I knew I couldn’t catch up until this morning. I wish I could have posted yesterday for the Big C.

  25. Annoddah Dave May 11, 2011 6:02 am

    JM2375 & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Thanks for the post…funny about naming players who you normally see in uniform and trying to figure out which is which in street clothes. UH is a commuter type school where students have other things going on….like jobs. It is tough to get a big student crowd. Even in the days of the Honolulu Stadium and Klum there were fewer students than average fans. But agree that having more students is a good thing. If every professor gave credit for attending an athletic event, it would create more interest or even a bonus question in a quiz to name that week’s athlete who scored points, etc.

  26. jm2375 May 11, 2011 6:04 am

Good morning! I guess I wen go nene too early.

Thanks for all comments. Think UHAD will at least consider it?

gigi – You need to watch more volleyball!! The guy without the leis was Brennon Dyer. He must have taken them off.

Kekoa – #15 – gotta agree with on the ushers. Some of them would rather not be there on a Saturday night, but not sure if they’re just following orders or that’s just the way they are.

Let’s start by bringing back the balloon brigade!!

Good luck to all UH students on their finals.

Tricky situation in planning the kind of promos and programs that would attract more teens/adolescents to the SSC events.

How will the season-ticket holders who may be two generations removed “enjoy” some of the things that would interest “Screecher”-aged fans?

  34. bigislandkurt May 11, 2011 6:39 am

Howzit JM! Have fun with the caddilac today!

By the way, Student apathy on campus is at an all-time high. Across that nation too, not just UH. Somethings amiss between traditional college life and today’s college student.

    BIK

  35. Stretch May 11, 2011 6:52 am

I’ve told many people and I think I might have posted this before. I think the reason a lot of students do not attend football games is because they can’t bring in alcohol into the stadium. When I was in school, they allowed people to bring in bags. I remember once seeing a student walk through the gate with a plastic shopping bag full of beer and ice, dripping water. Most students who are old enough to legally buy beer at the stadium, can’t afford it. I imagine most students would rather party at someone’s house where they have PPV and can drink. I am not saying we have to allow underage drinking, but just my thoughts.

It’s hard to say if students will come out if they get the “prime” seating. Which came first, the chicken or the egg. UHAD or the students will have to show some commitment to the other first.

    Condolences to MW and family.

  37. Pauoa Boy May 11, 2011 7:15 am

True Dat, we need more of a student presence at games, more of the college atmosphere type setting. Powerhouse programs like DUKE, North Carolina, etc… pretty much stand up the whole game cheering and screaming and getting nawts! I don’t know how many times at Aloha Stadium or Stan Sherriff when I’m cheering on the team and getting nawts always get some grumpy douche complaining, eh be quiet, sit down, blah blah blah….please get off your okole and cheer or go home watch the game where it’s quiet. Live Action is where it’s time to get loud and get nawts so the team can feed off the energy of the crowd. I mean if we was all sitting down and being quiet, frikk how boring is that! Plus I dunno how many times guys like act tough too… especially when you cheering on the team and then they like complain about you being loud and all that, then they like act tough and like throw blows and stuff…SMH. If we could bring in more of a student presence at games and have them get into the game and just go nawts, garrans it could be that extra little bit to get the team going and get a win!

  38. PowderPuff May 11, 2011 7:21 am

Good point, Ms. jm. KFVE sports is running features on the greatest UH sports memories…and last night’s was about the MVB upset victory over then top-ranked UCLA at SSC. Circa 1996? Anyway, those stands were packed to the rafters! Yes, we are talking about a different economy 15 years later…but people have money and will pay for great experiences. Perhaps it’s all in the packaging and presentation?

And yes, the volleyball guys are a rare breed…so down-to-earth.

  39. Pauoa Boy May 11, 2011 7:44 am

Congrats to Coach Gib on his recruiting efforts again. It’s good to have solid contacts and a great network of former coaches, players, etc… to tap into for prospects. Glad Shaq Stokes chose to become a Warrior and his Coach has ties with Coach Gib, definitely helps.

What gets me though is why everytime we have something to feel good about on the recruiting front or anything UH sports for that matter get guys like Dave Reardon who always gotta write something with a negative vibe to it. Seems like he contradicts his articles with good then counters back with something negative like what da heo? I mean yeah Shaq Stokes hasn’t played a game yet and who knows if he’ll be a star or whatever, but c’mon man the kid isn’t even on campus and you already writing caca already.

Stokes wasn’t targeted much because he was a late academic qualifier. Teams were on his tail but not pursueing him as much until he did qualify. Little do you know and I know it was only mentioned that UH, CSU, Western Kentucky and TCU was hot on him, that many big D1 programs were recruiting him. UCLA, Iowa, Providence, and a bunch of others came into the mix as well. Still he was a NYC player of the year in a city that produces D1 talent and future NBA stars on the norm. Yeah he stands only 5’10”, but he plays big and you don’t get recognized as the player of the year in NY unless you got some mad skills on the court! Plus you wondered why schools in his area didn’t wait on him??? Well if you were a recruiter and you had a handful of prospects to choose from and you had some solid guys ready to go and then you had guys on the fence waiting to qualify or choose, etc… which guys would you go after first and slam dunk??? A sure thing or an iffy-iffy guy…c’mon no brainer right… Anyway, I believe in Shaq Stokes that he will be a guy to lead this team for the next 4 years and get some Conference Championships and take us into March Madness consistently every year! Stokes, Blakes, Biggs, and Stevens plus the rest of the team are too talented and will take this Warrior team to new heights and levels of basketball greatness UH has been sorely missing in a long-long time!

  40. Slugger May 11, 2011 7:49 am

    Good morning, gangees!

Mornin’, jm2375! Good points about getting younger students/families into the games and the other UH system students.

Enjoyable days with BigIslandKurt and Mrs. C. Not to say that they can take the place of our fearless leader. Hope ST is having a good week off.

Condolences to Michigan Warrior and the ‘ohana.

  41. Hilo Moon May 11, 2011 7:56 am

My commnets may not be valid because I graduated from a PAC-12 ( PCC back then ) almost

50 years ago. Anyhow … the student sections at the stadiums and arenas were on the sidelines close to the action. As a student, you were always guaranteed a good seat, so you went to the games and cheered and the more students there, the louder and more raucous the cheering. The band sat in the seats between the 30 and 40 at the stadium and

not in the end zone like the UH band does. A lot of excitement is generated when the band, the students, and the team are as close as this configuration allows. More than that, the non-student spectators get swept into the noise and cheering. Not only does excitement beget excitement, it begets crowds and crowds will beget crowds.

As I said, my comments may be “out-of-date” because I know UH Mana, like UH Hilo, are commuter schools and that our economy forces many, many students to hold part-time

jobs that prevent them from attending games. However, encourage all students by giving them the good seats and

let them get that college game experience that we see on TV. I know some of them are doing it already and I’m sure they want more students to join them. I think that everyone wins in this situation,

and most of all, it helps the team win!

  42. Pauoa Boy May 11, 2011 7:57 am

    #16,

I always thought Ryan Grice-Mullens should be playing in the NFL somewhere. He was just as good as Davone Bess and a little quicker. Sucks that these guys aren’t in the league cause I see some guys on some NFL rosters and shake my head like how the hell is he in the NFL when got way better players? Anyway, hope our former players find a way into the league and represent Hawaii. What ever happened to Jason Rivers?

  43. mctruck May 11, 2011 8:02 am

    JM2375…….dis is your day……enjoy!!

Also, happy we got the likes of Shaq Stokes.

  44. Pauoa Boy May 11, 2011 8:04 am

Hilo Moon your comments is definitely valid and is not out of date at all. It’s just what UH needs is more of that student presence up close where the action is. I really don’t like the UH band in the endzone and rather have them somewhere in the orange seating with the students getting nawts! Dunno what can be done but something needs to be done to get these students to the games. What I liked this year is how Coach Gib went dorm to dorm, frat house to frat house, to get people to come to the basketball games. Maybe that’s what needs to happen, more promotion from the team themselves, etc… Maybe more events on campus to get to know your athletic teams and the players personally??? I dunno but even in these tough economic times I’m sure people will come out when they have something to cheer for and feel good about, it takes all the daily grind worries away, even if just for that moment at the games…

  45. Manoa Mist May 11, 2011 8:08 am

More students at games sounds good but…

Okay so the last time I’m at a UH hoops game, nice seats lower level mid-court. There are these two UH students jumping from seat to seat, obviously they don’t have tickets in this level – as folks arrive they move to the next empty seats.

Kid sits down next to me. He be all drunk, got another large full plastic cup of beer in his hand. He drops his beer and it goes all over my legs, all over the ground.

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY want to use the straight right, left hook combo but the kid is very apologetic, says he’s pau drinking, in fact leaves the section.

So I sit there in the remnants of the puddle of beer for the entire game. Shoes sticking to the floor, smelling of beer. Haven’t been back since.

    Congrats to JM2/6Xy+z=.00093419

Yes, get da keeds involve. Had uku pile o’ keeds at the RWSS on senior night, which was great to see, I think the free admission had a lot to do with the turn out. Maybe JD should have “familys free” nights in some other sports. It gets people into the stands and gets kids involved early on, grooming the future generation of UH sports fans.

Great job by the mighty Mrs. C. in her host spot yesterday. Good fun on da blog!

Sorry to hear about your loss, MH. Condolences to you and da Ohana.

Some sports news for you Tsaikos…

The Fiesta Bowl will be allowed to remain part of the Bowl Championship Series, though it must pay a $1 million fine for apparent illegal campaign contributions and inappropriate spending.

A recent internal report by the Fiesta Bowl detailed about $45,000 in reimbursements to employees for political donations, an apparent violation of federal and state laws. It also revealed lavish and inappropriate spending, such as $33,000 for a Pebble Beach, Calif., birthday bash for then-CEO and President John Junker, $13,000 for the wedding and honeymoon of an aide, and a $1,200 strip club tab for Junker and two others. Junker has been fired.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/football/ncaa/05/11/fiesta-bowl-fine.ap/

Only one million dollar fine? Dats chump change for the BCS!

Anyway, PB, in regards to DR and his columns thats just his MO. If you’re not creating negative vibes amongst readers, you’re not a very good columnist…lol!

  59. Not an Expert May 11, 2011 9:21 am

There are positives when we lose a coach who goes on to greener fields at mainland schools.

    1) Makes our higher up start to shake up what needs to be done. (A wee bit faster a wee bit better)

    2) Prior coaches at UH become like a seed that is transplanted elsewhere. They sprout and their roots have a lot of Hawaii in them.

    3) Gives our past athletes connections and places to go where their former coaches are.

    4) Gives UH better chances to play teams of former Hawaii coaches. (Army & Navy)

    5) Helps to make UH more noticeable because of their influences. More positives than negs.

Like they say in business it’s not what you know but it helps a lot who you know.

As I commented yesterday Hawaii 5-0, helps UH to recruit and helps our tourism industry. I believe JD should make an effort to see how they could showcase UH athletics somehow indirectly or directly on Hawaii 5-0. Look at the statement Stokes made about the show. It only can help to get athletes interested in looking and coming to Hawaii to play and get an education.

  60. Pauoa Boy May 11, 2011 9:21 am

    Shoko,

I like reading Dave’s stuffs but sometimes man I wonder why he get so much bad juju vibes about things. Anyway, I guess it makes for good debates and conversations just like on here, planny things for discuss. I think it’s cause I get passion for my Warrior teams and any player who is a part of that team, that any bad juju or negative vibes get my juices flowing like hot lava ready for explode! I love our Warrior Teams no matter how good or how bad, I Bleed Green and support them to the fullest!

    PAUOABOY: #42

Jason is finishing up his BA requirements at UH and is also a grad assist for UH football. Some talk of him being a receiver coach next year provided he gets his degree. Nice guy.

  62. al May 11, 2011 9:26 am

stretch…i hear you on this but they will never allow unchecked bags in to any public place these days.

perhaps, the students could develop a game day tailgate event/site. of course none of this would be sanctioned by the university. then students can bring their own kau kau and beverages to the tailgate have them there and then go watch the game. surely, they could transport some of their favorites on the bus “discretely” in back packs, etc.

college students are innovative and could develop their own method to party.

they just need to want to go the games in the first place.

  63. al May 11, 2011 9:29 am

i think for some of the sports a delayed broadcast would help boost attendance, however, how much of a revenue drop off would it be with the lower sponsor fees?

for example, mbb will be and is on the rise. should they delay broadcasts by two hours in the hope that will increase game attendance?

I’ve always believed that they needed to encourage fans from an early age. That’s what happened with me. My parents used to drag us to UH football games so it was a natural instinct as I became an adult to gravitate towards the team I know.

    Happy Hump Day everyone!!

For the second straight season, Hawaii’s Jessica Iwata and Stephanie Ricketts topped the voting for the Western Athletic Conference’s softball awards.

Iwata, a sophomore shortstop, repeated as WAC Player of the Year and Ricketts, a junior, was named WAC Pitcher of the Year, the league announced today.

Iwata and Ricketts made the All-WAC first team and outfielders Alex Aguirre and Kelly Majam were second-team selections.

    CONGRATS, SOFTBOWS!!!

The “free family” idea is good. I’d like to expand on it.

Get companies to pay just a few more dollars to sponsor seating in designated sections. These seats will go to families for free. Sitting amongst two sets of families will be a former UH Football player. The player will get a chance to interact one on one with the parents and kids. During the game reps from the company will come by and introduce themselves to the families and talk with them about UH football and possibly their business. Perhaps give out free memorabilia. Also during the game, other former UH players will come by and talk and interact with the families.

The whole concept is to make the fans feel inclusive. Truly feel part of the team and gameday experience. Guarantee this will hook those kids for life!

Most fans never get a chance to ever meet a UH player or coach. I still recall at our blog bash at the Sheriff a few longtime UH diehards were astonished to not only have met coach Mac but were blown away that coach approached them, introduced himself and actually sat down and had a good one on one session with them. That experience was simply priceless to them and solidified their loyalty to UH.

Forget the box, just gotta “no sked” think different.

Condelences to the Michigan Warrior ohana.

  72. gigi-hawaii May 11, 2011 10:15 am

    Michigan Warrior,

Sending you my condolences to you and your ohana for the passing of your father.

  73. jm2375 May 11, 2011 10:16 am

A-joe – #70 – I think that’s why the Screechers enjoy Warrior volleyball so much and why we joined the booster club. They get to interact with the players after the matches. (Not to mention the girls think some of the players are really cute!)

  74. Shoko May 11, 2011 10:24 am

    PB,

I agree with you completely. I love da Warriors. Period! But sometimes I like it when people keep it real. I remember reading Dave’s column about Mike Edwards and expressed his opinion on Mike’s arrest. After reading the first half, I thought to myself, sounds like Dave likes this kid. After finishing column, I thought…uh, no he doesn’t. DR is a master of confusion…lol!

  75. Pauoa Boy May 11, 2011 10:24 am

    #61 tommui,

Mahalo sounds good but I wish he was still pursuing to play football somewhere. He had the size, physicality and big play ability when it was needed most especially in the Bowl Games. Plus I remember he could play some basketball too…

  76. Ralph May 11, 2011 10:27 am

South Alabama replaces Western Kentucky on UH football schedule for 2012. South Alabama is in their third year of D1 football.

  77. Turfwar May 11, 2011 10:27 am

As a season ticket holder for football, wahine volleyball, and men’s basketball I just don’t see how the good seats can ever be put aside for the students. I pay hundreds of dollars for each sport including the recent added charges for premium seating and the season parking that goes with each event. With the lack of funding from the government, the university, and the minimum payouts from a non-bcs conference how do you guys even contemplate giving away these seats just so students can be seen on tv cheering louder than older fans or adding more excitement to the event. First off – not gonna happen unless funding/income is never again an issue. Second when the teams are playing well and winning cheering loudly is never an issue. Long before the students were given free tickets the Stanley rocked and the fans at Aloha could be heard from miles away. Cheering loudly and standing is not limited to student aged fans. And lastly I have two college aged sons who played sports all through high school and I have coached youth sports for almost thirty years. They both couldn’t care less about going to a sporting event. At this age they would rather be playing than watching or spending time with their friends socially. I have spent many an evening not using one or more tickets because no one wanted to join me at a UH game. I of course bleed green and white and will never give my tickets up but to suggest that a premium priced seat will be better served by giving it away to a 20 year old is foolish and frankly disrespectful to the many fans who have supported the University for decades.

  78. Shoko May 11, 2011 10:28 am

Okay, gotta get back to work.

Among the three Tsaikos (BIK, Mrs. C and JM2375) that have been fortunate to be blog runners, I think the blog that generates the most posts should be deserving of a prize at ST’s expense. To be a blog host isn’t easy…

Lamar, BYU and USC fills out the preseason for 2012. Lamar is also a recent entrant in D1 football.

  80. SteveM May 11, 2011 10:30 am

Stretch’s #35 and Rob25’s #67 meshes with my memories of UH football games at Aloha stadium after moving from the Termite Palace.

Stretch takes note of liquid refreshments and I remember the carnival-like atmosphere of the games starting at dusk or 7:00 PM. But Rob25 brings up memories of the family tailgates, when aunties, uncles, cousins and their friends all met for dinner and the game. The stadium was the place to be on Saturday night. Some didn’t have tickets, but would wander to the box office before game time. Didn’t matter how the team was doing–always had chance–or you sat in the parking lot.

Then aunty and uncle stopped going. Which meant most cousins and their friends stopped going too. Why? Because the Stadium Authority/whoever took the family tailgate out of game experience. No fires. Leave early. Can’t come in until real late because there’s a huge swap meet now. Then the final killer–no food or beverages (and I would add no umbrellas–which really impacts the fans in the mauka sidelines when the games start early).

Point is, a lot of cousins and friends and friends of friends stopped going–whether they were UH students or not. I think we lost a whole generation of fans during those years, and we see it now. So A-joe’s #70 is on the right track. Just takes time as the new generation grows up.

It’s the large number of students that don’t live in the dorms that we need to get back to the game too.

  81. Pauoa Boy May 11, 2011 10:32 am

    Shoko,

No doubt it’s always good to keep things real and get the honest opinion out there. Still though sometimes I scratch my head thinking what the frikk? I mean it’s like saying Hey Shaq Stokes welcome to Hawaii but I dunno about you… just cause you come from New York and was POY and went lead your team to the championship game, etc… I still don’t think you are as advertised. Cause you only 5’10” and schools from your area wasn’t recruiting you laddat so I dunno about you. Other players from your area was supposed to be good too but never pan out and I’m thinking maybe you going follow suit. Hope not but I skeptical unless you are the shiznit like it says you is. I mean for reals, he is probably one of the most talented PG’s we have recruited in a long, long while… Plus his game is legit and even in the championship game that he played, the Coach from the other team Coach Lovelace was telling her team they needed to stop Shaq and keep the ball out of his hands, cause they knew he would kill them if they didn’t. He gets mad respect from everyone who plays against him because he is a true baller no doubt!

  82. Addahknowsports May 11, 2011 10:32 am

    Goooooooood Morning Tsaikoland!

    It’s been a while…..

MW – Our condolences on your dad’s passing.

Just popped in to check it out. I heard from LK that the Tsaikos are in control of the blog. Huh? Is that right? Should I be concerned? Had to go back a couple of days to catch up. Looks like everything going okay. I kinda miss the bios.

BIK – I enjoyed reading about your outer island perspective. Coming from an outer island myself, I can relate…somewhat. About the not being able to “go, be and see” part of it. You had me salivating when you took us on that little food tour. Making me feel like going on a food forage right about now. Nice pics btw.

Mrs. C – Sistaaaaaaaaaah! Woulda been peeking in yesterday but I didn’t know how to pull up da blog on my phone yesterday. A-joe did it for me last night.

Mrs. Bread Pudding – Nice blog post today. If they can get non-sports people like me to the games…….

A-joe told me a long time ago (not in so many words) it’s about the connection someone makes with the experience that is the hook. Sometimes it’s as simple as getting a cap with a logo for your 5th birthday that makes the connection. His experience with PP&K could have been with an east coast team.

    Have an awesome day!

  83. jm2375 May 11, 2011 10:36 am

Shoko – #78 – it’s Kazz’s turn tomorrow. Don’t know who’s gonna guest host on Friday. So far, Mrs. C wins and gets a case of greenies, which might last her, oh maybe, 1 day? j/k Mrs. C.

  84. Pauoa Boy May 11, 2011 10:38 am

South Alabama who??? So I guess that’s a game where when we go undefeated and the BCS shafts us in the rankings, we play a team like South Alabama at the end of the season and stomp the crap out of them only to get no respect because of S.O.S. and move up maybe a spot or two. Who the frikk is Lamar too?

  85. jm2375 May 11, 2011 10:41 am

A-sports, Howzit!! Long time no see! Can borrow your lead slippah? A certain vertically challenged Tsaiko is probably gonna deserve to get hit with it tonight.

    Hello jm2375.

Students need to want to go to a game. No interest in many students for any sports.

Ralph, South Alabama has not been a D1 football school for the last 3 years.

Guud morn…off to a great start jm2375!..da keeper of da secret bread pudding and triple chocolate cake recipes…and who knows what other delights!

Condolences to Michigan Warrior and your ohana. Please make sure the keikis are all good with everything that’s happening.

Maybe da venues need to look at the policies in place. Students like to be…students at games and events and if you got too many rules about dis and dat, dey not gonna like it.

Split da arena/stadium up. Strategic placement of students and da “old futs” in da venue. No like noise, den go sit ova hea….you like make nutz?…den go sit ova hea.

How can one guy dancing in da arena be told to sit down?!?! Da cheerleaders ok but not like da spontaneous reaction from da rubba band man…imho…

Wow Kazz finally makes an appearance….I was getting worried ..he planning sumting speco fo tomorrow .. i tink…

Guud job U speco host peeps!

Maybe the athletic department should sponsor some social events or concerts at the Stan Sheriff. Admission free to any UH student who shows up with a recent ticket stub from an athletic event or $$$ without. Non-UH students get discounts with a stub or pay the full $$$ admission, too.

Michigan Warrior, so sorry to hear about your loss…

  100. Okole Maluna May 11, 2011 11:36 am

Sneaking in during my lunch break but it seem there is more post when Guest is hosting than our Official Host. I can’t seem to catch up from Monday!

    #19 rage777: more family ticket pricing, 2 adults + 2 children + 4 hotdogs + 4 drinks, for a certain price.

If I’m not mistaking one of the WAC school do offer hotdog and drink for family admission price.

And at Louisiana Tech Wahine Volleyball game they gave us free chips and drink from open coolers. You don’t have to go that far but if parents are willing to paying full price for kids seating downstairs they should get a free chip and drink included.

And for the UH students I remember seeing hundreds of students trying to shoot 3 points for a one free tuition.

  101. Okole Maluna May 11, 2011 11:38 am

#39 Pauoa Boy: I totally agree with you, I can just see all the kids wearing “Stokes” shirts including old man like me. I was almost sure he’ll go to TCU since they moving to Big East Conference tell me what kid doesn’t want to play New York adversary at Madison Square Garden year after year.

That’s the reason why many Hawaii kids attend school like Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State just to name a few. So that they can return an play against Hawaii at home.

Now the kids will start attending Big West and MWC more offen.

  102. Okole Maluna May 11, 2011 11:40 am

#41 Hilo Moon: I agree completely, when I was student at UH we ran into the stadium to get good seats in orange section they were all filled within few minutes and before kick-off section were filled.

So if there are open seats behind UH team let the students fill it 10 minutes before game time.

I can just see students waiting at the gate to run into the stadium. That in itself will be a sight to see.

See you laters need some FoooooD….

  103. Kazz May 11, 2011 11:44 am

UH on-campus sporting events at the Les and at the Stanley do offer:

  104. papajoe2 May 11, 2011 11:57 am

Who did South Alabama replace on the schedule? Oh yeah, the powerful Western Kentucky. Either way, they are a Div. 1 school. What a way to start a program. Tell you new recruits to come to my school, we’re going to Hawaii. Lamar also coming in the future. They are also starting a D1 program. If they are D1, no worry. Just check out some of the teams the SEC are playing. They not even D1.

  105. d1shima May 11, 2011 12:00 pm

    No Big Red…snf snk 🙁

  106. mctruck May 11, 2011 12:07 pm

    MW and Family,

    Condolences and prayers. Be well.

  107. d1shima May 11, 2011 12:10 pm

No take dem lightly; South Florida and Central Florida started their programs pretty recently and it didn’t take them long to get competitive (more than, some would say).

That’s still SEC-country and with all the local talent in the area a new D1 program no need worry about filling the roster.

Like the Old Chinese Daddy would say to his kids at the shoe store, “No worry, get room fo’ grow!”

  108. papajoe2 May 11, 2011 12:22 pm

Whaaaatt? No live stats for UH softball? Can somebody keep us informed? Kazz? Ralph? Pomai? Slugger? HyFlyer?

  109. What May 11, 2011 12:22 pm

The only Lamar I know is Lamar Odom of the ousted Lakers! South Alabama? Isn’t that the Gulf of Mexico! 2012 is going to be a great undefeated season.

  110. d1shima May 11, 2011 12:24 pm

    Isn’t “Lamar” Fred Sanford’s son?

  111. papajoe2 May 11, 2011 12:32 pm

110 don’t forget the “G” after Fred. G stands for “gonna have a winning season”.

  112. rage777 May 11, 2011 12:38 pm

    Turfwar,

The reason that I said students should be sitting in the seats were the TVs are facing is because a lot of students like to be in front of the cameras so their friends can see them. If more students come, it generates excitement, which causes people to want to come to the event and watch, which generates money for UH. I’m not saying that’s the best idea, but I just want to throw ideas out there because whatever strategy UH has, it isn’t working. I’m not sure how this is disrespectful to the fans who supported UH. I would think the people that support UH want UH to make money and get better in sports. It sounds like you just want it to remain status quo and hope for good teams to come along so people will then come to the arena/stadium.

Another reason to involve the students is because the age of the UH fan is increasing rapidly. What happens when the older fans start to not come to the events? You want empty seats? My father-in-law and family don’t go to UH games anymore because they are too old for the crowds, drive, and walk to the stadium.

I went to the games when Yuval, Angelica, A.C., etc were there and it was an electric atmosphere. I am trying to re-create that atmosphere by getting the students involved. Sure some of the older crowd will stand up and cheer when we are doing good, but I would want that excitement even when the team is not doing good.

I don’t believe in this commuter school theory, were people don’t go to the sporting events. If you are commuting to school, you drive what 10-15 miles? That’s not very far. Students can’t drive 10-15 miles to go to a sporting event for free? I think they just need a reason to go to the event. For students, there isn’t much to do on Oahu, except go to a club. Just make the sporting event more exciting than going to a club.

  113. flyntasasa May 11, 2011 12:39 pm

    Howzit guys,

Definately agree with Jm2375, that we need to get the younger generations excited about our UH sporting events while retaining the loyal older generations that make up the majority of our fan base.

I have a few friends on the UH basketball and Football teams, and know how hard they are working to get a ‘W’ for Hawai’i come game day. I went to every UH basketball game this season, and lost my voice every game and i’m not even an alumni. I just grew up watchin and loving UH athletics. During the double overtime thriller against Nevada, I had an older fan tell me to be quiet during the game!!! He even threatened to call security when I wouldn’t be quiet… Are you SERIOUS?! My remarks were not offensive as well, i never swore or criticized the other team, I was just cheering LOUDLY FOR UH!

Our student section this season was pitiful to say the least… after talking with friends on each team they said that the crowd really makes a DIFFERENCE! It pumps our athletes up, knowing that we have their back and here to support them! I just hope that this football season is different…

  114. Stretch May 11, 2011 12:40 pm

I am not sure which MWC teams will play here in 2012 but with Lamar and South Alabama the other home games, I am not getting too excited about it.

    #113 flyntasasa,

Exactly what I mean, as an athlete you feed off the energy of the crowd. If the crowd is getting amped up, screaming and getting nawts, your adrenaline going kick in as well! Think about the games when we played BYU how nuts those crowds were. 1989 After 15 years Hawaii finally beat BYU 56-14 behind the arm of Garrett Gabriel. I was there and that game was frikkin nuts! Then the following year, I remember when Ty Detmer was named the Heisman winner before the final game of the season against Hawaii in 1990, then what happened bruddah got his heart broken and BYU got that arse whooped by our boyz 59-28. I was at that game cheering my arse off for Garrett Gabriel and throwing toilet paper rolls full of confetti on the field. Then more recently in 2001 when undefeated BYU came to Aloha stadium bringing there cocky swag thinking they was gonna bust the BCS bubble and oops what happened…Coach Rolo, Ashley Lelie, and my boy Chad Owens scored so many touchdowns, BYU couldn’t count no mo’ to a tune of 72-45 and went home crying again… I know it was BYU but still those games where everybody was on their feet getting supah nawts is what it’s all about. Shute even when we played Boise State for our first outright WAC Championship ever, that game was nuts and the crowd was so loud could hear all the way out by North Shore probably!

Anyway, it kills me when get people complaining about being too loud or cheering laddat. I don’t know how many times I almost went to blows cause some clown was having a PMS moment that night and was complaining. Ainokea I going cheer and if you like make huhu I going cheer louder just for your listening pleasure… I remember the Navy vs. UH game I came home to watch live and this local boy who was in the Navy sitting next to me was getting nawts. Of course I couldn’t let that happen so I was getting nawts back cheering for our boys and heckling the Squids. Pretty soon had one heckling rivalry going on but was all in good fun and nobody was getting mento to the point of throwing blows. Das what the college atmosphere is all about. Going out and having a good time cheering for your team and getting nawts!

  129. Kazz May 11, 2011 1:58 pm

Oh and the infield/outfield remains the same.

Dara Pagaduan at 2nd and Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu at 1st. Sarah Robinson split duties at 1st back in the SJSU series.

    #587 for Stephanie Ricketts

Stephanie Ricketts has had a heck of a week. Not only did she win the WAC Pitcher of the Week honor, but she won her 3rd overall WAC year-end honor and her 2nd WAC Pitcher of the Year honor as well!

That’s pretty much it, oh WAIT!!! ……

With her four strikeouts in today’s 6-1 victory against Utah State, Stephanie Ricketts made a historic mark on the Rainbow Wahine Softball program by becoming the all time career strikeout leader with 587 strikeouts.

Former Rainbow Wahine, the All-American Brooke Wilkins held the record at 585 strikeouts.

Sitting out there in 2009 and seeing the slow but gradual maturity of a then-freshman pitcher thrown into the mix due to injuries to other pitchers was quite an experience and honestly I am NOT surprised to see where Ricketts is today.

I feel privileged to know that I can say that I witnessed her development in the circle from day 1.

Bottom of the 3rd, Fresno State and La Tech at 0-0. Krieg on the mound for LT, she is doing a good job, 1 h, 1 bb and 2 k’s. Let’s go Krieg, jerk the bulldgog chain and keep that scoreless.

  167. Kazz May 11, 2011 4:53 pm

    DPK,

Tomorrow, the mysteries of life will be revealed. I will show you all where the Lost City of Atlantis is.

I will place The Ark of the Covenant on lease.

I will place the 13th crystal skull on Craig’s List.

  168. Ralph May 11, 2011 4:56 pm

bottom 5th, FSU and La Tech tied at 0-0. Common on defense, La Tech’s got to back up Krieg when she pitches well and hope for a run or two from their offense.

  169. Ralph May 11, 2011 5:12 pm

Bottom 6th, La Tech 2-0 on a pinch hit homer by E. Kipp, a two run shot in the 6th. Krieg with a one hitter through 5, 2 bb and 4 k’s. Can do girl….Beat the Fresnecks!

  173. Slugger May 11, 2011 5:32 pm

Thanks for the SB info, Kazz. I didn’t get home till after the game was over.

Congratulations to Jessica Iwata and Stephanie Ricketts for their WAC Player & Pitcher of the Year awards!!! And congrats to Alex & Kelly being named to the WAC second team!

Kudos to Stephanie for surpassing the UH strikeout record!

  174. Lanaiboy May 11, 2011 5:38 pm

Surprise! Louisiana Tech beat Fresno State 2-0. The two runs held up. Big upset.

  175. Ralph May 11, 2011 5:41 pm

Fresno will play the loser of the Hawaii – New Mexico State match up in the third game tomorrow. La Tech advances to play Boise State in game 2, the loser will then play Utah State in the 4th game of the day at the WAC tournament.

  176. Ralph May 11, 2011 5:42 pm

I hope Krieg can do it again tomorrow against Boise State.

  177. Kazz May 11, 2011 5:48 pm

Louisiana Tech 2, Fresno State 0 – It was a classic pitcher’s duel between a pair of All-WAC pitchers in Tech’s Meghan Krieg and Fresno State’s Michelle Moses but a pinch hit home run in the sixth accounted for the game’s only runs.

Erin Kipp hit a pinch hit, 2-out, 2-run home run that was the difference. It came on a full count pitch after Moses appeared to get out of the inning on a strikeout. The 2-2 pitch in the at-bat to Kipp was straight down the middle for an apparent strike three, but was called a ball. It was a call that had the Bulldog Diamond crowd moaning loudly in a night filled with an inconsistent strike zone. Two pitches later, Jones belted her homer.

Krieg and Moses pitched equally well most of the night. Each took a 1-hitter into the sixth inning and there were few threats by either team. Fresno State had two runners on base with one out in the bottom of the sixth and looked to be in good shape with Moses and Caitlin Stiglich due up. Krieg was able to get Moses to pop up on a 3-1 pitch, and Stiglich to fly out on the first pitch she saw.

Kipp’s home run came with Janna Frandrup on first base after reaching on a fielder’s choice. Fresno State had what looked like a good scoring chance in the third. With Brooke Ortiz at first base with one out, Haley Gilleland laid down a bunt and was called safe at first base as Ortiz advanced to third. Gilleland, however, was called out in a controversial call for running out of the basepaths and Ortiz was ordered back to first base.

Along with the Bulldog Diamond crowd that moaned loudly at the strike zone for much of the evening, the nation’s bubble teams probably moaned as well. With Fresno State a virtual NCAA lock with a strong RPI of 35, another Bulldog loss in the tourney will mean the WAC gets multiple bids to the NCAA Tournament for a sixth straight season.

Straight down the middle, but high, that’s a ball all night long. 🙂

A runner to first can’t run outside of the lane to avoid being tagged, after all we are not playing chase master in Fresno.

  181. gmahoney May 11, 2011 7:10 pm

DPK~ the little fans are wondering when we can go see a softball game and eat great kau kau after with the players. I had to explain that only happens on senior nite. Won’t have another one until next year. But we are ready for any post-season games that may be shown on tv and we’ll root our girls on. Now that the hitting is coming around, back to calling them “Da Sistahs of Swat”! Great job, JM!

  182. warriorsun May 11, 2011 8:17 pm

it’s tournament time. the hottest team in the box that makes the fewest mental mistakes will prevail. today, utah state outhit hawaii 8-6, but commited 2 errors in crunch time that led to 4 unearned runs. that represented hawaii’s margin of victory. no team can afford to dwell on strike location from behind the plate–it will kill your team. go with the flow, remain positive and keep applying pressure on both fields of play. exactly what coolen did on the delayed-pickle-steal to second which allowed aguirre to race home and score before the runner at first was tagged out to end the inning. wahine manufactured that run on the base paths without the benefit of a batter.

if we lose to new mex st early tomorrow morn, we will have to play a determined hometeam with their backs-to-the-wall, but possessed with a fresh memory of a three-game sweep against the wahine.

it’s tournament time….wahine must play to win and without lookin back–even with a generous strike zone.

Nice job today jm2375, but what the heck does jm2375 mean? Initials and last four of your SSN? And why is it JM2375 in the title but jm2375 in the posts? I have the CIA working to crack the code right now.

Enjoying the guest posts, but there’s only one Stephen Tsai. Maybe we all can appreciate him just a little bit more after this. It’s not easy to post stuff everyday, keep it interesting and most of all keep if fun and funny. The man is good, if not the best.

And whether it’s DR or the troll who is in the softball cave, always gotta remember that they are just expressing one man’s opinion. They got theirs, you got yours, I got mine. No get nuts.

I’d rather read DR’s column where at least he’s taking a stance on something than a column that states the obvious. Say Hawaii is heading for a championshp game, and the columnist writes “Big Game Coming Up for Hawaii.”

    No kidding, Sherlock.

  192. Kekoa May 11, 2011 8:57 pm

    Manoa Mist,

This is where you are incorrect.

Dave Reardon speaks his mind. Hell, I admit I don’t agree with some of his stances on certain issues, like the fabled athletics fee, but he speaks his mind.

The jack*** you also speak of has cited lies and false instances and events, imaginary conversations with certain people, etc.. completely different.

Believe me, I shouldn’t have responded but the lies involving specific individuals was too much.

I will respond in kind if I feel the need to. I ain’t gonna be a little ***** about it.

    I always HATED this nickname.

I’m pretty sure it was dubbed by the media.

Sounds to 1950-ish with the tip of the hat to Babe Ruth’s “Sultan of Swat”…. wrong sport.

Oh and another thing… I’m SICK to death about this one snap and clear stuff being applied literally word for word to other sports.

Where’s the snap in baseball, softball, volleyball, etc????

    UGH!!!!!!!!!!!

  209. jm2375 May 11, 2011 9:22 pm

Actually, there’s probably some fee that supports those concerts at Orvis. What about the subsidized bus passes for UH students? ASUH was actually in favor of that. Everyone pays for that, regardless of whether they use it or not.

Quit yer bitchin! UH is still a bargain compared to most state schools on the mainland.

    UH vs UNLV 2011

Okay folks, now that spring is here and I’ve gotten through visiting the tax man, it’s time to start organizing for the game. My hat goes out to SteveM for compiling the preliminary ticket count, which is currently at 77. A few of you have emailed me with ticket requests. I’m not sure what happened to those emails. PLEASE email your ticket requests to SteveM so I can get an idea of how many tickets to get this year.

As in past years, UNLV won’t sell tickets to the general public until season ticket holders get first crack. If I can’t somehow use my charm to get the tickets earlier, I will fly to Vegas the first day of ticket sales and see what kind of block I can get. Regardless, I should know how much the tickets will be prior to flying out there, and I will pass them along to you at cost. (Of course, an extra $1 or $2 to cover my travel costs is always appreciated, but not required.)

Use stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com or any other email addy/means you might know. Also note that your number of tickets requested is understood to be tentative for now. Final confirmation later.

This is the 3rd time Rich2176 is generously doing this, so there is not much uncertainty or mystery involved here. Same with Rasu Begasu’s tailgate buffet and optional bus. Please provide any other info and tentative RSVP requests as listed at:

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/las2011.html

Also any changes, additions/deletions from earlier requests.

SteveM – #231 – homey and his chopsticks!

  234. SteveM May 12, 2011 12:02 am

I haven’t been posting the “Blast from the Past” stuff for the past few nights. Mostly because it is about displeasure with the AD and Colt’s video of the UH situation. Suffice it to say that ST gathered the support of a lot of big guns (and homey too) in case he had to circle the wagons. 🙂

Related to ST and his “loyal followers”, this post was made exactly 4 years ago today…

Someone asked how many local posters were on the blog the other day. I never counted them. Had too much idle time today so I made of list of posters today (May 11, 2007) starting from midnight until 9:00 PM. Total of 56 different people in the 21 hours.

Who really wrote this, lol? I agree, not fair only the UH students get good seats and there’s only a Kid’s Club! Nothing for everyone else! Who took these pictures at the warrior banquet? Oh yea, they’re really are the nicest guys anyone would ever meet. Not fair Kelly is part of the team. Ever since last year, I never seen her since like four years when she didn’t come back on the wahine team and now she shows up on the men’s team. If you can’t name everyone there, you’re not a fan! No one name everyone in the picture. That’s ofcouse Troy, Dylan on top and Nick, Matt and Kala’e on the bottom. What did I win?
