Quick answer

Former UH kicker Eric Hannum visited the news building last week, and he asked what many have asked: Why are there so many items about the Hawai‘i Speed and Quickness clinic?
The answer has little to do with the suspicions of conspiracy-minded folks.
My extended family, like many, has had members with a history of substance abuse.
In addition to its weekend clinics, Hawai‘i Speed and Quickness runs after-school programs that include anti-drug messages as part of the curriculum. Coupled with a program that uses athletics to occupy kids’ free time, and the organization is worthy of weekly discussion.
There are similar efforts in Hawai‘i, and this blog will welcome talking about them, too.
The Speed and Quickness clinics are this weekend. Check out the Web site:

Had a nice chat with Tim Grasso, who moves back to Hawai‘i in early July.
Grasso has fully healed from a hamstring injury that bothered him all of last season. That’s guts, punting with a hamstring injury.
Grasso and defensive end John Fonoti go on football scholarship in the fall.
The coaches are faced with a tough decision. There are more deserving players than available scholarships. Here are some of the walk-ons:
• Shane Austin, quarterback.
• Jake Santos, quarterback.
• Daniel Libre, running back.
• Aaron Bain, slotback.
• Daniel Lofton, wideout.
• Dylan Linkner, wideout.
• Cameron Allen-Jones, defensive end.
• Victor Clore, defensive end.
• Tuika Tufaga, defensive tackle
• Jameel Dowling, cornerback.
• Vili Nauahi, safety
• Dane Kealoha Porlas, safety.
• Mana Silva, safety.

    I participated as an observer.
One of my shall-be-anonymous coworkers participated, got exhausted, and had to be treated.
I’m starting my own speed-and-quickness keyboarding class. First lesson: home keys.

As I’ve stated before, my left pinkie was caught in a slammed door when I was 7. (That led to the worst phrase ever, when my piano teacher said of my wrapped pinkie: “This hurts me more than it hurts you.” Even then, I thought: Wanna bet?)
    But I digress.
Anyway, now my pinkie is curved, making it difficult to hit the “Q” key. That’s why people now take “tests” instead of “quizzes” in my stories.

Two Nevada players were kicked off the team yesterday. Four DUIs in a weekend for current and former players gives them some pretty bad publicity.

In what could be a significant step back for the Nevada football program, one former and three current Pack players were arrested in Reno over the weekend for driving under the influence.

Mike McCoy, Kenny Viser and Rocco Bene were all arrested in separate incidents for alcohol-related DUIs. The Reno Gazette-Journal earlier this week reported departed senior Ezra Butler was arrested for a drug-related DUI after officers found marijuana in his possession.

Coach Chris Ault did not return phone calls, but did release a statement, which included the dismissal of two Pack players.

“We have decided to dismiss Rocco Bene and Kenny Viser from the team for this incident and previous team rules violations,” he said. “Mike McCoy has been placed on team probation for one year and will face reductions in scholarship aid.”

Maybe players should be measured in the morning before practice to get their full heights. Who knew that players get shorter during practices and games?

Researchers report that repetitive blocking and tackling — coupled with the weight of helmets and pads – can temporarily shave nearly half an inch off of players’ heights.

They studied 10 high school football players — lineman, defensive tackles, and others whose positions involved repetitive blocking and tackling. The average height of players before the game was 69.5 inches. Afterward, it was 69.2 inches.

Campbell says that it’s well known that people shrink over the course of a day. “If you think of your body as an accordion, gravity squeezes you together as the day goes on,” he says.

SEC coaches do not seem to like the idea of giving football players 5 years of eligibility.

It sounds like a good idea on the surface, but the SEC’s football coaches aren’t ready to jump on the bandwagon being driven by Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe that would allow players five years of eligibility and eliminate redshirts.

The devil, coaches said at this week’s SEC spring meetings, is in the details.

“The thought would be why we would give them an extra year in that sport?” Beebe said recently. “But you’re talking about a sport with more redshirts than any other sport. And it’s a sport where youngsters play a physical, very tough game with a lot of hard practices.

“There’s nothing to play for if you’re a redshirt kid and there’s a lot of disillusionment. And (coaches) don’t want to burn a year on a kid who looks promising by just playing him on the kickoff team.”

Each of those points has merit, some SEC coaches say, and, sure, they’d like to not worry about when or if to redshirt a player. But if the scholarship numbers, now at 85, don’t increase, the rule has problems, they say.

What if a few players who are going for their fifth season aren’t big contributors to the team? Those scholarships would be tied up, cutting into new signings.

Some coaches believe the proposal would be received more favorably by some smaller Division I-A schools because it gives second-tier prospects an extra year to develop in game situations instead of just in practice.

Auburn’s head coach got in a job at Ohio State.

In advocating a playoff, Tuberville pointed to Ohio State losing by a wide margin in consecutive national championship games by SEC teams.

“Ohio State would have finished fifth in our league and they’re ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll,” Tuberville said.

  20. Garret May 30, 2008 10:41 am

Rivals doesn’t give the Warriors the credit they deserve.

LUCK IS TURNING: Nevada (6-7, 4-4) went 3-4 in games decided by one possession, including a four-overtime loss to Boise State and a two-point loss to WAC champ Hawaii. All that happened as redshirt freshman quarterback Colin Kaepernick was forced into starting duty.

LUCK IS RUNNING OUT: Hawaii (12-1, 8-0) lost its coach and the bulk of the nation’s top offense. After going 5-0 in games decided by a touchdown last season, Hawaii’s fortunes appear likely to turn in 2008.

Chad Kapanui has put up excellent stats this season.

Sioux City Bandits quarterback Chad Kapanui, who guided the team to a league record for points in a game, has been named United Indoor Football’s offensive player of the week.

Kapanui, who shared the honor with Sioux Falls quarterback Terrance Bryant, completed 16 of 25 passes for 212 yards and seven touchdowns in the Bandits’ 79-60 win over the Colorado Ice last Saturday at Tyson Events Center. The 6-2, 250-pound quarterback from the University of Hawaii guided Coach Jarrod DeGeorgia’s team to touchdowns on 12 of 14 possessions while breaking the former scoring mark set by the Bloomington Extreme a week earlier in a 76-73 win over the Bandits.

Heading into Saturday night’s game at the Tyson against three-time defending UIF champion Sioux Falls, Kapanui has passed for 2,076 yards and 38 touchdowns. He ranks second in the league in touchdown passes and third in total offense (201.2 yards per game).

Good morning gang…So, koakane, was humid last night????

  24. Jason May 30, 2008 10:54 am

Hey, I can be an instructor in those speed-and-quickness keyboarding classes. I type 90-100+ wpm, depending on the difficulty of the text I’m typing.

And I forgot to mention the price drops yesterday. I think the cut from $59 to $40 for men’s basketball tickets with the Mānoa Maniacs is one of the most necessary price cuts for the students. That $59 doesn’t include a $10 fee, so that’s $69 for an average of 15 games; not much savings, when you consider it’s $5/game. It may be similar to UH football ($30 for avg 7 games), but it’s easier to get students to go to football; basketball has been sorely lacking in student attendance. $40 ($50, assuming the fee is the same) is a great deal now for 15 games. I got tickets my freshman year, but I didn’t my sophomore year because I couldn’t make the Sunday/Wednesday games due to church. I bought tickets last year, but still skipped the Sunday/Wednesday games. Now with this lowered price, I don’t have as many qualms over those missed games, since I’m not losing as much money.

All I want now is a student package for discounted Rainbow Classic tickets as well, cause Mānoa Maniacs tickets don’t include the Classic. The mainland students leave for home during the holidays; UH athletics needs to do something to get the local students who stay here to go to the games. We already know the crowds aren’t as great as they should be, especially because people are doing last-minute Christmas shopping. Big-name basketball opponents (which the Classic hasn’t had for a while) doesn’t draw as well as big-name football opponents, so there needs to be something else to attract those students.

#16 Phil Mickelson claims his “recent success (I’ve no clue whether or not he’s been successful recently)” can be attributed to his “increase in height” by 2 inches from stretching exercises!

  26. bonar May 30, 2008 10:57 am

#15: Coach Mack said this morning that he’s not a rules guy, but he insists that players “do not embarrass” the program.

  27. Jason May 30, 2008 10:57 am

And one more thing about the Ching Athletics Complex: gotta love this quotation!

“Colt (Brennan, the former UH quarterback) brought public attention to some of the UH facilities,” Tsui said. “Should we have inquired about it more? Probably. But chances are the athletic director or the administration usually brings these things to the public. I don’t want to cast aspersions on (former athletic director Herman Frazier) but if the athletic director has his signals around town, we can get a lot done.

  28. Garret May 30, 2008 11:06 am

    Jason,

The other thing I noticed about the articles about the Ching Foundation’s donation is that the Ching Foundation got involved with UH when UH was trying to convince JJ to stay at UH. If JJ had stayed at UH and HF had been able to keep his job, I think this donation would not have happened.

    Jason & Others:

This was one of the last posts in the previous blog:

According to a UH press release, here are the ticket rates for the upcoming year at all three facilities where tickets are sold.

Aloha Stadium end zone upper level football season tickets will be reduced. Individual game tickets in the north end zone will drop to $12 from $22 for ages 4 to high school.

A season-ticket package in the upper level for men’s basketball will fall from $59 to $40 for UH students. A single game adult upper-level ticket for an individual game will drop from $22 to $18.

Student season tickets for baseball go from $75 to $50 .

Free admission to men’s volleyball matches for UH students in the Super Rooter/Manoa Maniacs sections and the upper level.

Adults who purchase at least two tickets to any game will receive two student tickets for the price of one for that game…….

Hope to see some of you either today or tomorrow.

With respect to your comments about the Rainbow Classic – that is sponsored by the Outrigger Hotels in partnership with UH. Have you considered contacting OH’s marketing department to run your suggestions past them?

    ***********

Regarding my last comment in the blockquote – details about today’s last-minute T-Gathering are not posted on SteveM’s website, the information has not been released here on the blog, and I’ve not gotten back a response to e-mails sent last night and earlier this morning. Since it seems to be a BIO private event, the first half does not hold.

With respect to tomorrow, I’m dropping off the car off in town for the remaining repairs stemming from last week’s vandalism and will not be meeting up at Nancy’s.

We’ll stop by if we get the chance sometime in the future.

Eat for two at both events.

    ***********

LIZK: Congratulations on getting the tickets. Glad you were able to get extras through other people here on the blog. If anyone else decides to go and needs additional tickets, let us know.

    aloha all-

Lizk- mahalo for the dreadheads vid- never saw that one before and sure brought warm and fuzzy memories!

Jason- good luck in your con’t academic endeavors…will be rooting for you when you do your sutudent teaching!

ALL- CORRECTION: I was given credit for helping with Wahine Softball Wac Champs bracelets unfairly- I did nothing – I only gave a ( small ) donation- as did so many others- POMAI did all the work in researching costs, etc. and placing the order- A-House did the collecting and submitting of money to UH…

I was, however, championing the cause of the Wahine Soccer Team- who were faced with a similar problem- they ordered pendants and had no idea where the money would come from to pay for them as they didn’t realize that an entity would NOT be paying for them- since an entity paid for the Football team’s rings.

The Soccer team was also requesting kokua, in response to my asking them for a ‘wishlist’ (which someone on the blog suggested I do), with funding players’ summer school tuition. I will check in with Kathy Carey and see what is the latest.

I was also checking with the other Wahine Teams which were WAC Champs, to see if they were ‘covered’ with their WAC Champ recognition ‘item’s, but interestingly enough, neither Volleyball nor Swimming ever got back to me! I still find that amazing!

So…YEEHAW Pomai and thanks again A-House for handling the collection. How nice of the Softball team to want to do a public event of the players getting their much-deserved (and long overdue) WAC CHAMP bracelets! Sure would be nice to attend…

    GO WARRIORS!

  33. bonar May 30, 2008 11:26 am

It is interesting that Rolo has now said on several ocassions that he was not as focused as he should have been his first year in the program, which held back his development/growth as a QB and the ability to pick up the offense. I think that whenever a highly lauded recruit comes in they might have a sense of entitlement. Today, Rolo said that he believes the incoming QB’s, Rausch and Alexander are focused, will work extremely hard, and will be able to pick up the offense in time for next season. I hope Rolo’s right.

  35. Bulla May 30, 2008 11:33 am

    g-nalo,

many hours i have spent on the ‘course’ chasing that little white ball…a korean friend once asked me, do you control the ball or does the ball control you.

and no, this was not on keeamoku street at 3 am, instead at Olomana golf course for a weekly match….the gist is this…are you chasing that ball, or have you hit the ball in the manner, the distance, the trajectory, and the accuracy that you wanted to…thus, you control the ball.

either way, a bad day at the course is still more fun than a good day at the office……unless you’re a doorman at a nightly establishment….ok, that’s enough. i wanted to mention how some guys get all the luck and have such a titillating experience.

  36. Kazz May 30, 2008 11:33 am

    Jason,

The article this morning credits UH President David McClain for initating the deal in the beginning like you mentioned when the JJ talks were starting WAY TOO LATE.

McClain was questioned about what was to be done about the facilities issue during the press conference conducted the Monday Jones left for SMU. He did mention that donations (in the millions) were being negotiated.

No doubt this GIFT was what he was talking about.

Now what to do about those cats (preventative maintainence)…

  37. Bulla May 30, 2008 11:34 am

    bonar,

if i remember correctly, i thought that if Rolo had played in any of the first 3 games of his last season, he would’ve had Heisman numbers…..it wasn’t until TC got hurt right that he went in?

  38. g-nalo May 30, 2008 11:39 am

Bulla – your Korean friend is right, not your friend on Keeaumoku but your golfing friend. 🙂

if you’ve spent “hours” on the golf course, then mine are measured by “days”. but you’re correct in that golfing outside in Hawaii beats the office.

btw – we all know a doorman at a nightly establishment has its ‘eye candy’ benefits.

Good afternoon, Tsaiko Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Wow, so much talent without scholarships is amazing to me. I can’t remember a time that was ever the case in the past. Am I wrong here?

That new Ching complex will take us from the Outhouse to the Penthouse in one swoop. Just outstanding and I love the design, good Hawaiian sense of plays, no cement and glass generics, very nice.

    LizK,

I saw your ticket info on the last blog, mark me down for that price. We can talk about arrangements later. Thanks a lot for your efforts, that goes Bhf2 also.

Fraziers departure seems to have opened the bottle neck hesitation for direct community involvement. JD’s trust factor also has a lot to do with it. I can’t help but believing that this is just the start of more big things to come.

Now, if the Warriors will manage to shock the world and put up another stellar season, when nobody is expecting much from them and I strongly believe that, the flood gates will open and we’ll enter an era of fantastic times.

    RE: Walk-on scholarships:

Libre and Bain have to be at the top of the list. I think there needs to be something said for seniority and sticking it out. There are a few talented newcomers on that list who will likely be big contributors to UH in the future…and there time will come.

A scholarship is an honor, so lets reward those who have been important members of the team for years.

  45. stacyj May 30, 2008 11:56 am

    Jason,
UH basketball needs a good local recruit that will also attract the crowds. When Kalia McGee and Alika Smith played, many of us went to watch because they were friends of everyone. It is a trickle down effect. I started going because Kalia was a good friend. Then, my room mate started going. Next thing you know, we were organizing groups of friends (dorm and non dorm) to go. At any given time, there would be 15 – 20 of us. Long after I graduated, my roommate was still going to watch Alika and AC.

I don’t know about the current players, but the players during that time period were very friendly and outgoing. They talked to everyone in the cafe and always engaged with everyone on campus. I think the same thing went for the volleyball team during that time period too.

  46. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc May 30, 2008 11:58 am

SteveM: As of two minutes ago, I did not receive any e-mail from you or anyone else about today’s event. I didn’t mention names on purpose because our e-mail and website hosting service – ValueWeb through Costco – has been inconsistent at best since Tuesday.

If you sent something which I don’t receive within 24 hours, it should bounce back to you as have other people’s sent e-mails over the past four days have done.

Some e-mails are delivered without any problems and others bounce around in the ether for up to 24 hours and others are immediately rejected. I have no way of predicting which ones will fall into the the last two categories.

That’s a tough one to answer. Without having the coaches intimate knowledge and going by your above list, the only one I would be sure of is Daniel Libre, the rest is too hard for me. I would love to hear your picks, but you probably have to refrain from that, wanting and needing to get along with all of them.

with the two new QB’s coming in i’d think Austin and Santos WON’T get it?

  66. troll May 30, 2008 12:22 pm

Yeah thought about Silva as well, seems like coaches are also high on him.

  67. Pomai May 30, 2008 12:24 pm

    • Daniel Libre, running back.

    • Cameron Allen-Jones, defensive end

  68. Ralph May 30, 2008 12:25 pm

Kazz, I think Tsui is a retired First Hawaiian Bank officer, V.P. First Hawaiian peeps are influential UH backers- Dods, Tsui, Guerrerro…someone from the bank seems to be on every search committee at the UH

  69. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2008 12:25 pm

Think these decisions are tough? Think about men’s volleyball. Including the libero, there are seven starters and 13 allowed on the game-day roster. Yet they are limited to the equivalent of 4.5 scholarships. Like I wrote in a previous post, the compliance folks re-calculated the maximum value of a UH scholarship, lowering the total amount in the found that is distributed to the players.
    What do you do?

  70. Pomai May 30, 2008 12:26 pm

    • Cameron Allen-Jones, defensive end

When Willie Horton (the bank robber, not the baseball player) was asked why he robbed only banks, he said: “Because that’s where the money is.”

Cancel the VB program and give the money to the football program. Nah just kidding.

    Re: Mana Silva
Everyone knows Mana is athletic. Questions about his toughness were answered during spring practice. Mana can hit — although he’s the second hardest-hitting Mana on the team.

    Libre and Cameron Allen-Jones

  76. LizKauai [Believer] May 30, 2008 12:29 pm

of course income taxes are horrendous.

UH can’t add any more men’s sports (gender equity) and can’t deduct any (minimum needed for I-A status).

  78. whitey May 30, 2008 12:30 pm

Good afternoon to the Tsaiko world. It is aloha friday and feels like aloha friday, so get ready to enjoy your weekend with friends, family, and whatevers.

Kazz, just a note on Jack Tsui. If this is the Jack I know, he is one of the most generous guys I know. He is very quiet, never one to look for the spotlight, but has a huge heart when it comes to UH. I think he is one the the guys who gave UH Athletics $50,000, no questions asked a few years ago and wouldn’t be surprised if he is one of Na Koa’s top sponsors.

  79. troll May 30, 2008 12:32 pm

If one only would be Libre. It’s to bad you can’t give them all.

  80. Ralph May 30, 2008 12:33 pm

Bain and bank the second one through this summer, watch who works the hardest amongst the list or offer it to a deserving recruit who became available this summer…Don’t give it out to quickly, never no if someone else who is perceived better becomes available this summer who is not on the current UH roster or tryout list

  81. whitey May 30, 2008 12:42 pm

ST, your note on scholarship allocations for various men’s team is a valid one and will continue into the future until the Title IX issues are settled. Your notes are excellent, but to take this further, the issue of men’s sports will decline because a lot of them are insignificant revenues for the athletic dept. Women sports will grow till they are equivalent to mens, but the issue of booster support will become a bigger problem and all we need to ldo is look at is UH inability to reward their WAC champs. There is also the bad side for women sports, like if UH decides to just maintain minimum men’s sport to comply with WAC guidelines and delete some of the men’s scholarship. This will directly affect the women’s sports and they will lose scholarships. It is a vicious circle, but hope UH can challenge this and rise to the top.

remember when VonAppen suggested bake sales to raise money? we have come a long way.

  83. FloridaTed May 30, 2008 12:52 pm

Why are volleyball and baseball scholarships so limited? Especially in VB, we’re not talking about dozens. Is it mainly because of football skewering the title 9 balance?

LizK, high fives back at’ya !

  84. Eagle May 30, 2008 12:54 pm

Let’s put it this way, who wants to tell Libre that he is getting passed over for Mana Silva (whom I know and like by the way)??

Again this is just my opinion, but you don’t give out extra walk-on scholarships to newcomers, no matter how talented or how much they figure into the future of the team. As long as they work hard and show it on the field, they will get theirs.

Give it to those who have already shown it. It’s not just about the money…it’s an honor.

Again, by madness I mean nothing, just the first phrase that comes to mind.

Mike, while getting material for your article this morning, did you hear anything at all regarding constant upkeep and preventative maintainence efforts for the upgrades being planned at Clarence TC Ching Complex?

  89. troll May 30, 2008 1:10 pm

Is it better not to give them the scholarship and watch them go somewhere else because they are more talented than those that are being honored. I like Libre as my number one because he is talented and game proven. But we recruit based on talent why not do the same with walk-ons.

  90. PIAA DS May 30, 2008 1:10 pm

Hi everyone, just jumping in here real quickly to invite everyone over to Saint Louis tomorrow, Sat. 31st. for the 7th Annual PIAA H.S. Combine. We just opened up 25 more spots for walk ins as pre-registration filled us up by tuesday last week. So if you have any boys who are hoping to get in, tell them to get there very early and get their name on the list. Walk ins will be processed on a first come first served basis and when we are full, we are full (we have to consider insurance, field space, food, drink etc). We have a full video crew coming in to video all the events, it will be available on line to fans, families and coaches.

Should be a great day. Come on out and say hello, relax and watch future Warriors show their stuff!

    Tsaiko Thought…

Under Koa Anuenue, where you can offer “services” as a donation…

I wonder if it would be possible to lend a spare body or two for the weekend to help maintain the new Ching Field?

People say they’ve only seen “one maintainence” person on site…

  92. bonar May 30, 2008 1:25 pm

I would think a newly built complex would not present significant maintenance issues. The main thing is that student-athletes take personal responsibility so that the maintenance budget can continue to be devoted primarily to the longstanding and numerous repair/maintenance projects that have been given “high priority” by UH.

  93. Kazz May 30, 2008 1:28 pm

UH Introduces New Aloha Stadium Parking Initiative

    Link:
    http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/pr.html?prid=15166&p=100

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i Athletics Department , with approval and support from Aloha Stadium, has acquired all available inner circle parking stalls surrounding Aloha Stadium and the adjacent Bus Lot beginning with this upcoming football season. This acquisition could raise an additional $100,000 for the `Ahahui Koa Anuenue scholarship program benefiting all student-athletes.

All stalls in the inner circle and Bus Lot will now require a designated parking pass. Only `Ahahui Koa Anuenue members, who pay premium seat contributions of $400 or more, will be eligible to purchase a parking pass in these areas.

The remaining Upper and Lower Halawa Lots, and Kam Lot – approximately 4,500 stalls – will not be affected by this plan. These lots will still remain available for the general public.

Parking for the general public will also be available at alternate sites including Radford High School, Leeward Community College, Kam Drive-In, and Ford Island when crowds exceed 30,000.

  94. FloridaTed May 30, 2008 1:28 pm

    Kazz,

I think under Donovan, the neglect what we have days are over. He knows better then anyone how hard it was for Hawai’i to get what is coming. Im quite sure that he will take the necessary steps not to repeat serious past mistakes, don’t you think?

    FloridaTed,

Yes JD is getting things done, but of course, having the money to pay or hire more individuals (custodians for the entire campus) could very well continue to be an uphill battle for the school.

  98. OTTO May 30, 2008 1:49 pm

Maintenance… that’s what everybody forgets. The way to keep things nice is constant preventive maintenance. Alot of the seats at the Les are still okay, if they would have done maintenance (e.g., clean them, paint the mounting brackets, tighten the fasteners, etc.). The seats at the Les are not as faded nor damaged as Aloha Stadium’s. That’s what the current Mayor’s is espousing… don’t build new things if you’re not going to budget the maintenance.

  99. James May 30, 2008 1:52 pm

Kazz..I have to agree. The financial battle will be an uphill one, especially with the slight downturn in the economy. The battle will be a long one but one that can be won……and I think every little bit helps. The Tsaiko t-shirt sales we’ve had so far have netted about $600, I believe, and I still have a few more shirts to sell. I mean, that doesn’t sound like much but it could buy a thing or two for the football program, freeing up money for other athletic department needs.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  100. James May 30, 2008 1:55 pm

    Otto…

Totally agree. That’s what I’ve been saying for a long time. That’s the State’s and city’s way of doing things that needs to be changed. THey always build things, let it sit for years without any sort of upkeep or maintenance, and than get stuck with large repair costs. That is one of the reasons why I don’t understand UH’s thinking in floating $350 million in revenue bonds for a West Oahu Campus when that money could be used to greatly improve Manoa. Once that is taken care of, than look at building West Oahu and funding its maintenance as well.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Maintenance is a huge issue for not only existing athletic facilities, but also the entire campus. The meeting rooms in the locker room have been unusable for several years now as a result of flooding, etc. It is critical, though, that the student-athletes take pride/responsibility and take care of especially the newer additions, so that extraordinary maintenance is unnecessary.

Without building a ton of high rises in the west side, that area will never achieve the numbers originally envisioned for a second city. In the mean time, imagine what could be done instead with those funds in turning the Manoa Campus into an absolute jewel, all sports and academic persuits included.

    Speaking of flooding at Manoa.

I recall always passing by some sort of an “electric room” in the parking structure on the bottom level that sits partially below ground level.

At the top of the stairs leading to the door of this room is a mini-wall made up of sandbags. Obviously to avoid any kind of water collecting at the bottom.

Seems to me that this is a SMALL hint of the problems at UH when they have something temporary and last minute as sandbags protecting this maintainence/electric room from flooding.

FYI, if you park in the middle of the parking structure you can see this for yourself as this room is at the bottom of the stairwell located in the central part of the garage next to the main entrances facing Ching Field.

  139. Kazz May 30, 2008 3:51 pm

Just looking again at the tentative design of the Clarence TC Ching Athletic Complex and I noticed that the front of the structure that features the tapa painted walls with the “H’ logo and the “grand” entrance way is set to face the Wahine Softball Stadium.

I’m just trying to start conversation, but my first thought was, “who’s gonna see it”?

But then again, the students dorming across the way will have a REAL NICE view of it all.

I would have a soft spot for Cameron Allen-Jones because I met his son “Lil Cam” at practice one day. But in all seriousness, it would be a very difficult choice.

  145. g-nalo May 30, 2008 3:58 pm

Kazz – for athletic events, a lot of people drive down to the parking structure from the back gate no?

or will the complex require space from the existing road?

  146. Kazz May 30, 2008 3:59 pm

OH! Another thing… (probably getting WAY ahead of myself here), but… even if they charge admission to watch football practice from the Ching Complex I wouldn’t mind it at all!!!

Man, I am slowly getting real excited about the possibilites of this all and I don’t doubt for one second that after the big gift to UH has received such media attention that other well-to-do donors will step up to assist with the balance of the entire project. Heck, I’m personally looking at sending a Christmans gift to the UH Foundation to help in my own “small” way for this.

Hmmm… I wonder if there will be a possibility of holding the state championship game for high school football there instead of Aloha Stadium?

2011 is not that far away folks!!!

    BELIEVE!!!

Again, God bless the Ching Ohana!!!

  147. homey ® May 30, 2008 4:00 pm

    Chicken!!! MOO! MOO!

  148. Kazz May 30, 2008 4:02 pm

    G-Nalo,

I think there is ample space already considering there is a decent amount of room between the actual field/track to where the fence sits and where the those portables and the concrete dance studio thing is.

I think it will depend on how “steep” the plan on laying out the bleachers and the offices.

If they will expand the “width” of the are it will have to be done on that side though as they probably can’t go too far on the side facing the pool and the current locker rooms.

  149. homey ® May 30, 2008 4:11 pm

Speaking about chicken, Just noticed that Costco raised the price of their roasted chicken from $4.99 to $5.49.

At least their gas is still cheaper per gallon ($3.989).

But then again 1 chicken with rice is a very filling meal for one.

  150. g-nalo May 30, 2008 4:12 pm

g-nalo – Phew, that was almost blasphemous! Good thing you wrote “nah nah nah”. May the golf gods be with you…

  153. Kazz May 30, 2008 4:16 pm

Gas? Brah tree nynee tree at Fastop or 7-11 Aloha Gas!!! Well, in Pearl City at least.

I saw it at 4.01 on Young Street at the corner of Kalakaua this morning. 👿

  154. J-DOG May 30, 2008 4:18 pm

4.12 for regular unleaded at McKinley Carwash.

  155. Kazz May 30, 2008 4:18 pm

Hope all will still be hungry for Nancy’s tomorrow morning!!!

  156. J-DOG May 30, 2008 4:20 pm

I happened to be looking at some old photos the other day, and one taken at a carwash I was at in 2004 showed gas as 1.89. Sad.

  157. g-nalo May 30, 2008 4:23 pm

I think there is ample space already considering there is a decent amount of room between the actual field/track to where the fence sits and where the those portables and the concrete dance studio thing is.

I think it will depend on how “steep” the plan on laying out the bleachers and the offices.

ok good, was underestimating how ‘thick’ those portables are.

yeah from the Bulletin sketches, looks like equal size bleachers on both sides? i’m sure they’ll just fit what they can instead of encroaching on the road? cause then traffic would be a pain prior to and after games.

  158. Kazz May 30, 2008 4:24 pm

    Let’s see… Regular Unleaded was $1.74 when I was a sophomore in high school…

My how times have changed…. and S-U-C-K-E-D!

  159. troll May 30, 2008 4:24 pm

Give these three the schollies June Jones, Herman Frazier, and last but not least Fred Wah-Hoppen. lol

  160. FloridaTed May 30, 2008 4:24 pm

    Kazz,

The Ching venue would more than have the quality to hold a State Champ, FB game, but the capacity of planned 3,500 wouldn’t do. Don’t they draw 20,000 + for those games at Aloha St.

  161. Kazz May 30, 2008 4:25 pm

    J-Dog,

2004 it was 1.89? Maybe my memory is shot…

  162. Jason May 30, 2008 4:26 pm

The Chevron here in Salt Lake yesterday was $3.99. Today, it’s $4.04.

I remember when I used to think of cities like Atlanta with their $0.99 gas, and think, “Wouldn’t that be nice?” Ha!

A small part of UH West campus has been operating for quite some time now in the heart of the 2nd city. So far, the new buildings that they have planned for the new site is merely a small extension of the main campus in Manoa.

I think they will be doing more retro-rehab of the main campus before they start really expanding out here. C’mon Tsaiko’s open up the brain trust and think growth and progress. Lead, follow or get the hello out of the way!

Nitto Bandito your xtreme puka shell taxi driver will have to give you guys the 10 cent tour of the 2nd city one day. Book-book him thru his website, http://www.manongindashadows.lurk.

  165. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2008 4:32 pm

Hey, just back from Calf Call and a mini tour of the unsupervised workouts. Stretch and Pride Period got to watch the two newcomer quarterbacks.

  166. Kazz May 30, 2008 4:33 pm

    FloridaTed,

I was thinking the same thing. The last championship game I went to, saw the sidelines of Aloha Stadium almost filled to the top of the orange on both sides. So if the spring UH game drew 12,000, then the high school championships easily draw 20K plus.

  167. bonar May 30, 2008 4:34 pm

Care to give us your insights?

  170. J-DOG May 30, 2008 4:38 pm

would the complex be good for wahine soccer games? i’m sure they could draw more students that cant make it out to the waipio field.

  171. Kazz May 30, 2008 4:41 pm

    RE:Soccer Games.

Just as long as the goal posts (illustrated in sketch) and the football lines on the field are not permanent then it would be a helluva a place for the Wahine to call “home”.

  172. Pomai May 30, 2008 4:53 pm

I must not have been paying attention, where is a link to see the new complex?

    Florida Ted
    Re post #125
End of the line for the rail is currently planned for site just Waianae side of the Advertiser printing plant and Kalaeloa Boulevard (which runs down from H-1 to the Campbell Industrial Park). It will be across the street from the Kapolei Commons shopping center which is under construction.

However, that will happen after the first segment is built, and will require finding additional money beyond what is currently appropriated from excise taxes and what is expected to be received from the Federal Government.

The first segment will start at a site near the Waianae end of the Ewa Villages Golf Course where the Salvation Army is building a huge community center and run through town ending at the second level of the Ala Moana Shopping Center. Second stop on the first segment is a station by the UH West Oahu.

Michelle Wie’s semester off to practice her golf seems to be paying off. See full story at http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5hHsIsuo-swfQmJ2KG2eu1lKLDzeQ

She is in 6th place after the second day.

  188. Pomai May 30, 2008 5:23 pm

Ok after looking at the sketch, with a little creative designing and more money there is no reason why they couldn’t build a 20/30 seat stadium there. I would rather see a sold out 30,000 every game than a half empty 50,000 at aloha stadium.

  189. Kazz May 30, 2008 5:29 pm

    Pomai,

Being a current season ticket holder, should the day come when they deem it feasible and logistically sensible to have a 30K plus venue at lower campus, I wouldn’t have to worry (fingers crossed) about securing my seats.

However, parking spaces, tailgating, and traffic issues might be a headache considering how bad it can get when the SSC crowds gets to even just 6K.

it was a pleasure talkin to you today. very good, you.

  207. Kekoa May 30, 2008 6:07 pm

Florida Ted ~ The focus is on getting the road improvements made to support the infrastructure that is planned over the next 5 years here in the 2nd city. There are new business coming up. Target & Costco are just a few. You really have to look at what has been developing here on the Ewa plains over the past 10 years to see the growth.

Light rail would be an option. If you don’t want it, don’t ride it. Not everybody rides the bus, but it’s there if you do. Living in a city that had it was nice. It came in handy when we needed it. The city expanded the service because it grew to be so popular.

  208. Kazz May 30, 2008 6:12 pm

    Again,

For those that missed my post a few days ago:

RE: 2008 FOOTBALL SEASON TICKETS UPDATE

I called the UH ticket office (05/28/2008) and they are still calling current season ticket holders to confirm/finalize their seating adjustments (i.e. moving seats, removing seats, or adding seats). I have still yet to be called regarding my additions to my current seats from last year.

The calls started last Thursday (05/22/2008). There are only 3-4 phone lines being used to call thousands of people.

From what I was told, they hope to take care of the current season ticket holders by the end of next week.

Once that is done, the new season ticket holders for 2008 will be contacted.

All contacts are being made in this order:

-Current season ticket holders by seniority (those deleting, moving, adding seats).
-New season ticket holders for 2008 by the order of those that placed deposits first.

  209. Da Punchbowl Kid May 30, 2008 6:12 pm

Nevah mind da new QBs, we wanna know how the “Karaoke Virgin” did at the Calf Call. My sources aint talking. 😉

  210. bighilofan2 May 30, 2008 6:18 pm

    Carl,

Giving you the benefit of the doubt, I sense that you’re trying to put your best foot forward, that what happened last year was due to HF, you were followin directives created by the moment and other factors beyond your control, tryin to be a team player, etc., tryin not to embarass the school, tryin to put a lid on da SCANDAL. You need to man up with, and for, the other Athletic Dept. peeps. Tell us it won’t happen again, get Virginia to back you publicly. But first, check with Jimmy D. Ask him if he would go. He is the front man, the face of the team. Let him make the call, and then follow HIM/orders. I feel he’ll do you right. He’s best for taking us to the national power level. IMHO.

We’re riding such a big wave right now. Gotta keep the good vibes goin so Coach gets da team to give Florida mayjah hammahjammah!

    GO WARRIORS.

  211. Kekoa May 30, 2008 6:23 pm

There is a ‘however.’ The attitude of the rest of the islanders is what surprised me when I moved out here. Most live in their humble abodes in east or windward Oahu and never venture beyond the H-1/H-2 split. So how can they know what the benefits are to living out this way? Some people assume things that are simply not true, about light rail or any other form of mass transit.

Florida Ted…The mere thought of bringing the stadium out to the Mauka intersection of Kunia Road and H-1 caused people from town side to threaten suicide. Yet thousands of people in California make the 2 to 4 hour drive to Oakland or SF to watch games at the stadiums. No Problemo. I hear the grumbles all the time about what a long drive it is around this rock and I just have to laugh.

With plenty of room to build and co-locate a stadium on campus, why not? It would be huge for UH. Homey could give Rickshaw rides around campus. There would be room for the UH Golf team at the Kunia course, under the direction of our own swinging sensation, “Gigi.” Life would be so good!

  212. HiFlyer May 30, 2008 6:42 pm

  243. I Believe May 30, 2008 8:17 pm

In an attempt not to ruffle feathers, I would suggest that people read the Title IX laws- and then form opinions- I personally thank God for the late Patsy Mink!

There was a time when women could not attend college…and then there was a time when women could attend college, but could not play sports in school…and speaking of school attendance, Mink, herself, went to law school because she could not get in to medical school – there were only so many slots made available to women – and then, after graduating from law school she had a hard time getting a job in a law firm because she was a woman.

Title IX was never authored or enacted to take away from men’s sports- it was to provide access to women, who had previously been denied access.

Go WARRIORS- Women and Men Alike!

d1 – yeah Tsaiko toys!! You remember those “special” shot glasses??

  248. Addahknowsports May 30, 2008 8:32 pm

    Hehehe Stretch-

Looks like I caught the wrong lurker.
Had a rough week. Right now I’m having a serious talk with my laundry. Haha!

    I’ll be there later.

  249. d1shima [sez:] May 30, 2008 8:40 pm

    I Believe,
There are many here who certainly support Women’s Athletics. The discussion earlier was pretty much focused on why some minor sports have to deal with lower amounts of scholies.
The reality is that outside donor levels is still skewed heavily towards support for Mens’ Athletics. As UH strives to achieve equality, it becomes more challenging to put a product out that attracts those dollars because the scholarships for those sports keep dwindling. With less $$$ coming in it eventually hurts both genders.

while defenders argue that the three-prong test embodies the maxim that “opportunity drives interest,” critics argue that the three-prong test goes beyond Title IX original purpose of preventing discrimination, and instead amounts to an exercise in governmentally-mandated social engineering whereby athletic opportunities are taken away from male students and given to female students, despite the comparatively lower interest levels of those female students

  250. d1shima [sez:] May 30, 2008 8:42 pm

    Stretch,

    Yes, “special” indeed.

    heheheh

  251. Stretch May 30, 2008 8:44 pm

d1 – need to be careful while handling. ST broke one

  252. d1shima [sez:] May 30, 2008 8:48 pm

    Stretch,

That’s wat he SAYS happened to it.
Can you imagine what the conversation was in the car after leaving the KCall?

“What are you going to do with THAT?”
    “Uhhh….”

  253. chawan_cut May 30, 2008 8:50 pm

    thanks!

  254. Addahknowsports May 30, 2008 8:54 pm

    Yeah Stretch & d1

Gotta have a very light hand with those.

  255. d1shima(tilted) May 30, 2008 8:55 pm

    chawan,
despite missing the EIS last week, I can pretty much answer that as an emphatic, “No.”

  256. al May 30, 2008 8:55 pm

  260. gigi-hawaii © May 30, 2008 9:01 pm

wow, you guys are etching shot glasses? Hubby and I hope someone will drink the CR for us!

  261. gigi-hawaii © May 30, 2008 9:03 pm

I am so glad the Celtics won today. Now they gotta beat LA. Shouldn’t be too difficult as they beat them twice during the season!

  262. Addahknowsports May 30, 2008 9:04 pm

    d1-

Nope to #258 and yup to #259

  263. I Believe May 30, 2008 9:05 pm

d1- yes, I read the earlier discussion, but…the fact of the matter remains that we are all a product of our environment…so, in America, most of us have grown up watching on t.v. football, baseball, basketball, tennis, golf, etc…all predominantly men’s sports…until relatively recently. I won’t even talk about the Olympics and its evolution. One ceiling was recently broken when Wimbledon changed its winner’s pay so that now winning women get the same as winning men.
Re: ‘minor’ sports…it’s been acceptable to continue minor sports when it is a men’s team…and I don’t have a problem with that as not all sports can bring in what football, for example, brings in…but then a women’s team, in comparison, is supposed to bring in bucks to justify its existence.
I know many here are supportive of women’s sports, but the ‘argument’ in the block print in your last post is the exact reason why Title IX is so needed. There really shouldn’t have to be constant justification for equal treatment.
If all children were provided with the same sports opportunities, you would see a lot more girls playing sports….and then that would result in a lot more women in college playing sports….with all due respect.

  264. gigi-hawaii © May 30, 2008 9:09 pm

My youngest sister had a track scholarship at UH. That made her happy.

  265. Stretch May 30, 2008 9:10 pm

gigi – if you don’t drink what’s in the shot glass, you don’t get one. Even chawan drank CR!!

  266. d1shima(tilted) May 30, 2008 9:10 pm

    gigi,
It takes a “special” kinda Tsaiko to volunteer to take a shot from these glasses.

  267. gigi-hawaii © May 30, 2008 9:11 pm

Well, then, I don’t get a glass. sobbbb.

  268. gigi-hawaii © May 30, 2008 9:13 pm

  269. d1shima [sez:] May 30, 2008 9:14 pm

    Stretch,

I don’t think gigi and hubby would be that interested in the “special” glass anyway.

  270. gigi-hawaii © May 30, 2008 9:16 pm

Plan to golf on Sunday at PCC. Must work on putting. Sometimes, it takes me 5 shots to get to the hole. Not good!

Then, driving. I don’t know why my drives fly so low, barely above the ground. Even with my “fantastic” back swing.

  271. gigi-hawaii © May 30, 2008 9:17 pm

d1, you’re probably right. We wouldn’t use it at home except to stare at it and admire it.

  289. Stretch May 30, 2008 9:45 pm

chawan – Believe me, you don’t want the “special” shot glass.

gigi – i would suggest that you play a par 3 course first. If you play a full course, you will upset people behind you.

  290. Stretch May 30, 2008 9:46 pm

gigi — I am making more shot glasses for the Tsaiko’s who don’t have one and come out to some of the events. Deal is they have to drink the crown shot to take it home.

  291. d1shima [sez:] May 30, 2008 9:47 pm

    chawan,
sorry, didn’t mean to denigrate your shot glass. It’s the same awesome one we all got.
The one that Stephen “broke” was….how shall we put it?….”different”

Let’s just say that bulla got great amusement from “dressing” it with mayo.
This being a PG-rated blog, I’ll leave it at that.

  292. gigi-hawaii © May 30, 2008 9:48 pm

Stretch, we haven’t gone on the course yet. Still practicing. About 1 week before the Kauai golf tournament, we plan to play the par 3 in the twilight for $23 per person.

  299. Stretch May 30, 2008 9:56 pm

warrior mojo – you should go check out your parent’s neighbor’s house, it’s coming up pretty quick

  300. Garret May 30, 2008 9:56 pm

Bad news…RGM’s injury is still keeping him out of practices. I guess I have to add that spelling of RGM to my Google search. It is so hard to find articles about him because of the spelling variations used!

Running back Darius Walker has missed a few of the days this week with an ankle injury. That doesn’t bode well for a player in one of the most heated battles for a roster spot. Chester Pitts, Ryan Grice-Mullen, Jordan Black and Brandon Frye have also been sidelined with injuries.

  301. d1shima [sez:] May 30, 2008 9:57 pm

    Mojo,
remind me not to try to hide something in a contract when you’re around.

My brother used to. I picked up a few of his RAH books. Long time ago, no remember that much about ’em. Saw Starship Troopers movie.

  302. WarriorMojo May 30, 2008 9:57 pm

    Update for Cowboys fans.

Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo are back ”on,” but a college pal of the Dallas Cowboys quarterback tells me it’s Romo who’s calling all the plays.

”He did agree to go to [sister Ashlee’s] wedding — keeping his promise to Jessica,” Romo’s Eastern Illinois alum chum told me. ”But he made it super-clear that if they were to give it another go, her dad had to seriously back off.”

My source says Romo has told Jessica their renewed relationship is ”a trial thing,” dependent on Daddy Joe ”leaving them alone” and stifling his tendency to tell Romo how to run his life, career and endorsement deals.

Apparently the spying by Deutsche Telekom went on for far longer than they admitted earlier this week. In stead of going on from 2005 to 2006 like they admitted, it looks like they actually bugged journalists at the Financial Times back in 2000! Recruiting spies to film the editorial offices of a respected publication seems makes this story really bizarre to me:

  305. FloridaTed May 30, 2008 9:59 pm

    I Believe (263),

I know I’m late , but I would like to comment on your post. Title 9 is the best thing that happened for women in sports, as well as other equities in general. A better balance still has to be found that is fair to both sides of the issue.

On Wimbledon I have to disagree with you though, I’m all for equal pay for equal work, but equal work certainly does not apply for tennis tournaments. The men play up to five sets, while the women play only three, hardly equal, is it? Once the women play five sets also, only then should the women get paid the same. Until then, the men actually get paid less and that’s true for all tennis tournaments.

  306. Garret May 30, 2008 9:59 pm

  309. WarriorMojo May 30, 2008 10:01 pm

Stretch, yeah, so I’ve been told. I’ll have to check it out this weekend. I know my parents were SUPER happy that the crew was able to help them with their stump problem. They were very grateful.

But I was even more happy than them because that might have become MY problem.

  310. d1shima [sez:] May 30, 2008 10:01 pm

    Hi Garret.

    Not good news for RGM.
Unless there’s actually another receiver with a name spelled very similar to his on Texans roster.

i don’t even want to know why you’re putting mayo on it.

  315. Garret May 30, 2008 10:04 pm

    d1shima,

I agree that it is not good news for RGM that he’s still sidelined with his injury. I would be extremely worried for him if it wasn’t for ST’s post that Houston has been very impressed by him and that he’s expected to at least get a practice squad spot.

  316. WarriorMojo May 30, 2008 10:04 pm

So, D1, did Boz sing Harbor Lights? I mean, I’m sure he did so I’m just torturing myself I guess. But there is something about that song that is truly magical.

  317. WarriorMojo May 30, 2008 10:05 pm

So, Garret, how was you meeting with those stinking lawyers?

  318. Garret May 30, 2008 10:05 pm

    WarriorMojo,

I never mind others posting at the same time! I was surprised that you held back on what you wanted to say earlier…that is not like you!

  319. d1shima [sez:] May 30, 2008 10:07 pm

    Garret,

I hope it’s not the same hammy problem he had since Pro Day (if someone from the Texans staff is hearing this for the first time – j/k) or they might start thinking it’s chronic.

  320. d1shima [sez:] May 30, 2008 10:10 pm

    Mojo,

    Yes he did.

    It SUCKED….. 😐
I hope that makes you feel better…..

    mmmfffmm….

    mmmmbbbffmmm….

    mmmmmpfwaaahhhh…

Sorry, couldn’t hold it in anymore.
    It was awesome….sorry 😳

  321. Garret May 30, 2008 10:10 pm

    WarriorMojo,

I actually really like my corporate lawyer. He became a good friend *before* I started my company because his family moved next door to mine and our daughters are all about the same age and get along well. I kind of overlook the fact that he’s a BYU grad and follows their team closely, as I figure UH isn’t going to play them for a long time.

I worried that I was trusting him too much, which is why I sent you that thing. From my read everything was fine. The firm seems like a good one to me and the fees are reasonable…I got used to Wilson Sonsini fees so I guess everybody else seems reasonable!

  322. Garret May 30, 2008 10:13 pm

    d1shima,

Well, RGM apparently did very well before his injury, so I do not think that his hammy was bothering him for awhile. Or it was bothering him and he had no choice but to gut it out until he had proven himself to the team (injured players without a guaranteed contract can get cut very easily like what Miami did to that WR). So hopefully the team will give him time to let it heal and he’ll be fine soon.

  323. d1shima [sez:] May 30, 2008 10:13 pm

    WarriorMojo,

It is true: at times discretion is the better part of valor.

    Good choice.
I still applying aloe to the burns I got from I Believe on that one!

  324. WarriorMojo May 30, 2008 10:13 pm

LOL at both D1 and Garret!

Garret, once in a great while I am able to bite my tongue. I don’t always act as I did after the Sugar Bowl if you now what I mean.

D1, thanks for at least trying to downplay it. Sigh, one of these days I too will see Boz Scaggs live in concert.

  325. FloridaTed May 30, 2008 10:13 pm

Well, good night gang, time to hit the sack., 4 am here. See ya tomorrow.

  326. Garret May 30, 2008 10:16 pm

About which of the walk-ons to give scholarships to, one thing that wasn’t brought up was academic standing. It is VERY important that the team gives the scholarships to guys who will graduate and help the APR. That was why JJ added the GPA minimum to walk-ons getting a scholarship, since UH was getting hit by the APR…but I hope that Mack goes even beyond that and checks on their situation regarding graduation.

  327. d1shima [sez:] May 30, 2008 10:17 pm

anyone else notice how nice and patient bhf2 has been for quite awhile now waiting for Stretch.

I hope he really was kidding in his last comment 😯

  328. Garret May 30, 2008 10:17 pm

My take on Title IX: It is a noble idea that was not implemented properly. But we had the NCAA as the ones implementing it, so that is not a surprise.

  329. WarriorMojo May 30, 2008 10:18 pm

Am I correct in assuming that Jack Tsui of the Ching Foundation is a St. Louis grad? I noticed that the other spokesman for the Foundation was attorney Ray Tam, another St. Louis alum.

Then, when you consider that attorney Walter Kirimitsu is UH General Counsel and the Lee brothers as coordinators, it’s fair to say that the St. Louis presence at UH is pretty strong.

  330. d1shima [sez:] May 30, 2008 10:24 pm

    WarriorMojo,
Not sure about Jack Tsui but Clarence T.C. Ching is an alum. ’32 I think.

Cal Lee is a Kalani grad. Not sure about Ron.

    Stutzman.
    Heffernan.
    Also SLS alums.

    Who did I forget?

  331. Stretch May 30, 2008 10:25 pm

    okay okay okay

QB Report – Please keep in mind, I was not watching their footwork.

Alexander is as big as advertised. His passes were thrown on a line, not too much arch. A few low passes. Looks like he is throwing a baseball

Raush is has the frame to fill out. He is about the same height as Alexander. I hope he spends time in the weight room to bulk up. I like his passes a little more than Alexander.

Funaki passes were for the most part on target. He is looking really comfortable making the passes. Since he knows the offense, unless the new QB’s are really quick learners, he should be starting at Florida.

Graunke – MIA not sure where he was but wasn’t on the field.

  332. Stretch May 30, 2008 10:27 pm

Pride can give a more detailed report on the QB’s.

d1 – I dare you to put the pressure on him to hurry up and post.

  333. d1shima [sez:] May 30, 2008 10:29 pm

    Judge Kirimitsu is ’58 alum.

One SLS tradition is the 50-year reunion class comes back and participates in the graduation. Touching stuff.

They also had the 60 and 70 year guys there, too.

  334. Da Punchbowl Kid May 30, 2008 10:32 pm

I only have a “special” one because a certain someone insisted on giving me one at the CC. Awkward. The same someone who’s always talking about red tights. Awkard. The one who lurks and then only jumps in when he can work the red tights into the chat. Awkward. Creepy. Nuff said. 😆

  347. Rob25 May 30, 2008 11:16 pm

I know this is a little late. Just catching up after attending my son’s graduation from Kaiser.

KAZZ-my season tickets are in my mom’s name and they contacted her and left a message. She called them back and was able to add three more seats (for Ronnie) for this coming season. I know that there are some areas that they aren’t able to do that because they thought it was for my mom’s seats which are in the brown of the south end zone, so they were telling her that they couldn’t there, but she told them that it was for my section (brown North end zone). They were able to get Ronnie’s seat two away from mine…we’ll just have to move the two gentlemen right next to ours. J/K LOL

    Hope you hear soon.

  348. Rob25 May 30, 2008 11:17 pm

    Message for Liz…

Are you sure that you don’t want to go with us girls to the Fresno game? Ronnie and I were talking today and she asked again about you. Didn’t know if you had a final answer.

    Good night everyone!

  349. Garret May 30, 2008 11:22 pm

    Stretch,

Thank you very much for the QB report! I am very, very surprised that Tyler wasn’t there…I’m glad that at least Inoke was available to help the new QBs get adjusted. Your reports on Inoke, Rausch, and Alexander were not surprising at all.

    Got your email! 🙂

  351. Jason May 30, 2008 11:33 pm

I’m looking forward to watching the QBs work out sometime soon. Were there many people there, or was it just the two of you? 😉

  352. al May 30, 2008 11:35 pm

garret….i am not surprised at all that tyler was not there. last time he helped a jc qb transfer the guy ended up breaking thirty something records.

he has been habut ever since.

  354. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 12:09 am

OK, I’m back, and a little late to defend myself.
No, it’s not a new camera. I didn’t think it was possible for Al to get drunk on hot tea.
It’s the same camera my son gave me several days ago. Probably bought it for $200, and must be worth $40 now.
But it takes good food shots, so I’m pleased.
The family is hinting I might get rewarded on Father’s Day.

    A hand me down ST?

  356. LizKauai May 31, 2008 12:28 am

Hi Rob25- wow… I would love to go to the Fresno game but the doggone price of planes and actually the time away from work is going to be a strain. I already charged my home game plane tix and most of the mainland tix… ouch!

But just to torture myself- when are you flying and where did you get those cheap Delta seats?

  357. LizKauai May 31, 2008 12:39 am

ST- the Genji kaukau looks so good. Nobody had Nabeyaki Udon or Oysters on the Half Shell? Those are my faves so far.

Addahknows- BIG FAVOR – do you have a stainless steel interior travel mug that could be Tsai-ko logo-ed? Someone snitched my fave travel mug. Not looking for a freebie… Would like to order 2 -if get.

  358. LizKauai May 31, 2008 12:42 am

    Hi duffer!

Graduation was pretty tonight- I saw some of it- then had to get my station set up in the cafeteria for Project Grad registration. Got back a little while ago.

Older son is very upset… one of his friends (who was supposed to graduate today but, like my son last year, was not able to walk) committed suicide today.
It’s a tough world for some of our kids…
