Passing interest

If you hire him, they will come.

Norm Chow’s reputation as an elite quarterback coach is proving to be attractive.

Ohio State quarterback Taylor Graham told the Cleveland Plain Dealer he is set to transfer to UH.

Of course, it is not yet a done deal. For one thing, this is a dead period, and UH must wait until next week to approach Graham. There’s also the matter of the school being closed this week.

But signs are favorable. As a high school senior, Graham, whose father Kent Graham played in the NFL, was recruited by Chow, who was UCLA’s offensive coordinator at the time. In deciding to transfer, Graham requested — and received — a scholarship release. He had listed UH among the destination schools on his request list.

If Graham transfers to UH, he must sit out the 2012 season. After that, he will have two years to play two seasons.

UH also has drawn interest from two other quarterbacks. But the Warriors are in a holding pattern until after the dead period.

UH will become the next Quarterback U

  10. Sean (aka pcwarrior) December 28, 2011 12:37 am

What would be interesting is our RB situation. I think all of them can block and catch but now who will be the one with the best vision to follow his blocks and cut back on a dime and make someone miss in the open field.

  11. Bugaz December 28, 2011 12:38 am

Hopefully not too many passing on interest by coach Chow. We need our top boy to stay hope and rep.

  12. Sean (aka pcwarrior) December 28, 2011 12:38 am

Sorry, didn’t mean it the way it came out!

  13. Bugaz December 28, 2011 12:40 am

The oline will have to be changed big time to see the running backs following blocks

  14. Bugaz December 28, 2011 12:43 am

I think we have capable RB’s, I think coach going have to find some monstahs to be blocking for them down field

  15. Slugger December 28, 2011 12:44 am

Hiyah, again. Responses to the last blog, then I go to beddy-bye…

easybruddah, thanks for the 411. Always want to know what they’re saying about us.

W-Doc, collared polo shirts would be a lot more work for what Don Weir is trying to do right now. He has someone who will print the shirts. Sounds like a t-shirt program to raise kala with the initial momentum & enthusiasm to support Coach Chow.

When I went to get a shirt for my Mom at butigroove, they had sold out of all sizes, but the Small tees by the time I got there around 2 p.m.; they were totally sold out the previous day. They reacted quickly & $cored in the marketplace. Problem with UH is that they have bureaucracy to go through (bids for printing tees, if they don’t have a vendor on contract already; design approval; Rainbowtique purchasing processes; UH Foundation okay to raise $ with the shirts; etc.) butigroove saw the opportunity and reacted quickly capturing the demand, especially for Christmas gifts.

Waiting to see who comes and who steps up their “game”…

    Night, gang!

  16. Bugaz December 28, 2011 12:45 am

Good luck mister Graham! I hope it works out to benefit you and the Warriors.

If you hire Norm Chow, they will come.

    mornin.

  18. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 28, 2011 1:00 am

Are the 2 other QB’s of the same “star” caliber as Graham?

  19. al December 28, 2011 1:06 am

just as expected,..recruiting has taken on a whole new look. surely we need to beat the bushes to find the best prospects available and we need to out hustle the competition. but, these days name recognition and some brand name won’t be the issue anymore.

as this ohio state qb did so will many more in the future be initiating contact with us first.

looking forward to see what the chow dynasty will bring with only a short amount of time left in this recruit season.

    after all…these are exciting times.

  20. Pomai December 28, 2011 1:19 am

To be honest if being big time is being compared to USC or UCLA then I don’t want to be big time.

  21. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 28, 2011 1:40 am

An interesting read on Coach Anae. If you want “inroads” to the Kahuku community, the Anae family is as “in” as one could possibly get.

  22. misterfudge December 28, 2011 1:55 am

6’4″ Chauncey Winchester-Makainai, 6’5″ Blake Muir, 6’5″ Jordan Loeffler and 6’4″ Sean Shigematsu would seem to fit the mold for the prototypical Chow o-lineman. Any local high schoolers fit the mold this year?

  23. A-joe December 28, 2011 2:24 am

You know Chow is good when his back up QB at SC not only got drafted before notable QB’s but became the first in NFL history to start an NFL game at quarterback without ever starting at quarterback in college.

    Now das some AWESOME coaching!

  24. mo808 December 28, 2011 3:41 am

Wow! Hope it pans out for Graham’s transfer to UH! 2012 looking very promising for Warrior football! Can’t wait to know who Coach Chow will select for his staff, as well as the recruited players that will chose UH! Gonna be a long wait and see till next week or so…

Is it football time yet? The “next season” anticipation is warming up as news of coming regime hits the print.

    Go Warriors!

  26. Wes'side Warrior December 28, 2011 5:13 am

    Morning, everyone!

Wow, getting more and more exciting with each passing day… and nothing official is even in motion yet.

d1… re: your “Chrust Chow”. How about “In Chow we Chrust”? hahaha!

Regarding our O-Line. I think we got some players already. Just gotta coach them up right. Should be more fun for them to run block and run over people, as opposed to just standing their ground pass play after pass play. Mixing it up should be more fun for them.

And on D, as long as we wrap up, and not allow so much second-effort yardage, we’ll improve. Would love to see some taller DB’s with the speed too.

Anyways, best wishes to all former Warriors and Warrior Coaches. Hope the rest are diligently working hard, to get a good from the next regime. Lots of uncertainty with change, but being in top form and adaptable is key. If gotta change positions, then do what you gotta do.

  27. PIAA DS December 28, 2011 6:13 am

#26 “In Chow we Chrust”…Love it!

I do know there are several local players waiting for that call who have either been offered by UH and want to commit or have bee offered elsewhere and would seriously consider committing to UH. Frankly, I’m exicted some of them will Change for Chow!

  29. kapakahi December 28, 2011 6:31 am

    #22. misterfudge,

Quite a few tall local Class of 2012 OL prospects this year….

    – OT Matt Sparks (Punahou) 6-5

    – C/OG Shane Brostek (HPA) 6-4

    – OT Pasoni Tasini (Baldwin) 6-4 (offered by Utah…probably by NC)

    – OG Kiha Sai (Kamehameha Oahu) 6-4

    – OG McKenzie Togafau (McKinley) 6-4

    – OT Chris Loyd (Moanalua) 6-4

    #26. WW,

Lost 9 senior Olinemen (6 scholarship & 3 walk-ons) from last season so will definitely need to replenish sheer numbers to add depth….and to even conduct practice.

  30. bleedgreen December 28, 2011 6:31 am

    OT 73 Nate Potter | 6-6, 300, Sr., 3V

    75 Faraji Wright | 6-3, 291, Jr., 1V

    OT 78 Charles Leno | 6-3, 278, So., 1V

    54 Michael Ames | 6-4, 291, Jr., 1V

    OG 77 Spencer Gerke | 6-3, 290, So., SQ

    61 Joe Kellogg | 6-2, 299, Jr., 2V

    OG 55 Chuck Hayes | 6-2, 291, Sr., 1V

    64 Brenel Myers | 6-2, 277, Jr., 2V

    C 71 Cory Yriarte | 6-1, 282, Sr., 1V

    65 Matt Paradis | 6-1, 286, So., SQ

    66 Thomas Byrd | 5-11, 288, Sr., 3V

This is the depth chart for Boise St’s O-line. You don’t need “Monstahs” to be good.

  31. LizKauai (iPad) December 28, 2011 6:42 am

    Mahalo and Aloha, Coach Miano.

    Onwards and upwards.

    Aloha Kakahiaka, everyone!

  32. bleedgreen December 28, 2011 6:42 am

What makes Boise St good is good coaching. Their players don’t make mistakes. Coaches are imaginative in their play-making. Players are very good at skill positions. Very disciplined. And they epitomize “team.”

Maybe they use real measurements. A lot of schools pad their measurements.

  35. Da Punchbowl Kid December 28, 2011 6:55 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Just imagine what’s going to happen when Coach Chow is completely on board and he and his assistants are really working on recruiting.

Exciting times. You got it right, Ms. Liz. Onward and upward!

  36. koakane December 28, 2011 7:05 am

    morning 808

very busy yesterday and part of it was recovering from the pre and christmas day feasts.

much developments with the new fball hc. excited UH fball program is being rebuilt but not overly hyped because need to see what the foundation is going to be and how it produces. so for now lurking, listening to see what goes on in the next few months.

sending mahalo to Miano and best wishes for his future coaching endeavors.

  37. Stretch December 28, 2011 7:09 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Exciting news… hopefully he puts it in writing. I’ve been hearing that he is also considering other schools. I am sure Chow will keep on it.

Re: Miano – I appreciate all he has done for the UH program and wish him the best in the future.

There are people who have been talking about the Walk-On program and the Speed and Quickness. First, every school has a walk on program. Miano is the coordinator, he does not coach them individually. My point is that another coach will take over coordinating the program and position coaches will coach them up. Hopefully walk-ons will continue to contribute to the team.

The S&Q is a private company that has nothing to do with UH. Why do you guys think it was moved off campus? Miano, through his wife, can continue the clinics if he remains in Hawaii.

    Next, for

  38. el burro sabio December 28, 2011 7:11 am

4 assistants are out. If Chow has spoken with all of the remaining 5, this is indeed very interesting.

  43. Kevin December 28, 2011 7:28 am

Baseball, Softball, Men’s Volleyball… and still get Basketball continuing in the spring.

    Keep yourselves occupied!!!

  44. Last Call December 28, 2011 7:35 am

If we could just get UH to start filling us in on the spring sand vb program like where and when I’m thinking it could go over big here.

I got no problem dragging a cooler and a lawn chair to the beach and watching girls play VB. 🙂

  45. Bugaz December 28, 2011 7:38 am

I wasn’t implying that we needed taller bigger oline men. Although that would be great too, I meant “monstahs” (guards) with speed and power for pull, hit a DE off track and take out a LB and WR too. Animal out not size! I know why Boise is good. I’m hoping Lefotu and Makainai find a starting spot with a mean streak in them

  46. Kevin December 28, 2011 7:41 am

I think our guys have potential for TONS of aggression.. After all, don’t they say offensive linemen have more “fun” run-blocking?

  47. Bugaz December 28, 2011 7:42 am

Oh by the way good morning!

  48. koakane December 28, 2011 7:45 am

#38 must of missed the announcement which 4 assistant coaches were out?

dpk just letting things play out. no like get caught up in the hype being put out

  49. Bugaz December 28, 2011 7:47 am

Problem is our o line men been recruited to pass block and the starters mostly practiced and played that way as Warriors unless you were on the scout team “O”

  50. rico December 28, 2011 7:50 am

i would only keep rolo. would be a good qb coach. needs to learn from chow.

  51. Bugaz December 28, 2011 7:54 am

    Welcome, Taylor Graham.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    Remember In Chow we Chrust

  54. kuunakanaka December 28, 2011 8:22 am

    Mahalo Coach Miano.

  55. Dennis Halloran December 28, 2011 8:22 am

Real Offensive lineman start at 6 feet 6 inches for tackles and guards

  56. Bleed Green and White December 28, 2011 8:31 am

    #55 – are you serious?

That’s a joke and simply not true at all.

Sure, it would be nice, but at the same a complete fantasy.

The one offensive lineman with the most Super Bowl rings than any other offensive lineman, is 6’2″.

    Get real…….!

  57. Kevin December 28, 2011 8:31 am

    Oh wow!

TONS of ‘fake’ offensive linemen in college and in the NFL.

AMAZING how they accomplish what they do. Considering they are ‘fake’.

I’d have a hard time telling a 6’5″ offensive lineman he is FAKE.

  58. Kevin December 28, 2011 8:33 am

In recent memory, Tala Esera and Dane Uperesa were imposing offensive linemen for UH along with Samson Satele.

BUT I guess they were FAKE since they are not 6’6″+.

  59. Kevin December 28, 2011 8:35 am

Jesse Sapolu was FAKE? Damn… if only he was 4 inches taller!!!!

How the hell did he win so many Super Bowls if he was FAKE????

  60. Bryson December 28, 2011 8:39 am

Is there any possibility due to a coaching change that Graham would be able to play this season…let’s say maybe if he was told his scholarship would not be renewed…any insight to what the NCAA rules are in regards if this situation happened…

  61. Kevin December 28, 2011 8:40 am

Hmmm.. Must have been a case study that said “real” offensive linemen at 6’6″ minimum.

BUt actually he said guards and tackles, Sapolu was a center.

  62. Bryson December 28, 2011 8:40 am

    Uh oh….Kevin is the loose….

  63. Bryson December 28, 2011 8:41 am

    On the loose…

  64. Bleed Green and White December 28, 2011 8:48 am

Kevin – I’m glad you jumped in.

I don’t know who Dennis Halloran is, but dang he got under my skin with such a ridiculous comment.

  65. Kevin December 28, 2011 8:50 am

The new UH coaching staff will have a very difficult time recruiting “REAL” offensive linemen due to this immaculate revelation.

Guess they should start competing with Gib Arnold and Charlie Wade’s recruits because of the new 6’6″ measuring stick of “real” offensive linemen talent. Footwork, core strength, and football IQ comes last and can be taught to anyone.

FIRST THING FIRST!!! GOTTA BE 6’6″ MINIMUM!!!!!!!

    (im being sarcastic)

  66. Kevin December 28, 2011 8:54 am

The word “REAL” doesn’t allow for much wiggle room. If something is real, it’s real, it’s legit, no in-betweens.

So if someone wants to say tackles and guards under 6’6″ aren’t real… well… might as well walk around with ass-less chaps waving hello to everyone at Fort Street Mall.

  67. Kevin December 28, 2011 8:54 am

    I meant ass-less pants.

  68. Odis Rowse December 28, 2011 9:07 am

    santa is real, right? 😆

wasn’t Pride a former uh o-lineman? is he real? 😕

  70. Kevin December 28, 2011 9:25 am

Per Alan Miya of ESPN 1420:

Taylor Graham will be a guest on the Sports Animals at 4:20pm today.

  71. SteveM December 28, 2011 9:26 am

    Good morning everyone!

FYI– Dennis Halloran is an occasional poster from the L.A. area who has been with us since June 2007. He is retired and has attended “Calf Calls” with the LoCal (lower California) Tsai-kos. See:

You will also see photos of Ronnie, Garret, Rich2176, hawnstln, UKU@la, RainbowCliff, BNS, Tombo Ahi, etc.

    Hi Dennis! Long time…

  72. Old School Dave December 28, 2011 9:26 am

Looking forward to Spring Practice. Be worth paying the $5 for parking.

O-linemen will have to grasp the concept of run blocking. Defensive people will need to relearn how to tackle and wrap up (no more grabbing). Offense will also have to learn the intricacies of a balance attack (along with a fullback and tight end in the mix).

Have a feeling that Coach Chow’s coaching staff will have a Utah, UCLA, USC, & BYU influence. New ideas, new teaching & coaching, emphasis on discipline & intensity, renewed enthusiasm. All positions will be up for grabs come spring time. Makes for some very exciting times.

  73. (Jesse) James December 28, 2011 9:29 am

Good morning Tsaikos….Lots of action happening…Good to hear all the new buzz about the program and all the renewed interest…Hope it continues….

  74. madeinhawaii December 28, 2011 9:34 am

Heh heh.. Dennis Halloran ruffled some feathers with his sarcasm, eh? …

6’6″ indeed… we all know that’s not true.. gotta be 6’9″ at least!…

  75. Kevin December 28, 2011 9:34 am

Parking to go up to $6.00 or was it $7.00?

    Starting next month.

Pretty sure thats what I read.

  76. madeinhawaii December 28, 2011 9:38 am

  77. Kevin December 28, 2011 9:39 am

  84. TChahng December 28, 2011 10:06 am

    < sarcasm >

What!? Parking price going to $6 – $7? Five bucks was good. I would just hand them a $5 bill. Now I gotta fumble with $1 bills? I hate those bills! Those are fake bills. They should just make it an even $10 so I can just hand them one $10 bill. Now that’s a real bill. Real bills start at $10!

    < / sarcasm >

Have a great Wednesday everyone! 😀

  96. madeinhawaii December 28, 2011 10:23 am

As of January 2, please refer to the acronym NCAA as Norm Chow’s Aerial Attack…

  111. Kevin December 28, 2011 10:41 am

    (J)James,

BEFORE. If it was after, he would have forgotten.

  112. jkjones December 28, 2011 10:43 am

Nothing but healthy signs from Norm Chow that he is willing to cut and burn the program while growing it. A thorough house cleaning has been long overdue. The entitlement era is coming to an inglorious close. If anything, Chow’s boldness should be a huge boost to our football program and a lesson to other others: produce! This is a business, not a special interest network funded with tax payer’s monies.

It comes at a vital time in the collegiate world of conference realignments and team shuffles. Hawaii needs to break its fall and stabilize its program. Coach Chow maybe precisely the cure needed at this pivotal juncture.

His signal to recruit two-QBs should also send a message to an overstocked cupboard of mediocre Hawaii QBs on scholarship. Rolo, is at the core of these targets.

At least, fans will take some reassurance that a Chow hire is designed to satisfy team outcome rather than UHAD politics.

That been said, let’s move on to a new dawn.

  115. Kaneohe Resident December 28, 2011 10:56 am

For the first time I’m interested in Hawaii Football. Graduated in the mid-60’s and still sarcastically remember Rainbow football being coached by Jimmy Asato playing the Tantalus Rangers in the Honolulu stadium on a weekday night. My friends and I were accompanied by a crowd of at least 30 other fans cheering on “our Bows”. While studying at Sinclair library, we noticed the lights on at the stadium and someone remember that the football team was playing that night. So…we wandered down, parked right in front of the Isenberg gate and walked in. No tickets, no nothing and sat down (or should I say spread ourselves out) on the bleachers and watched the game.

Since then, to me, it was a series of missteps until the present. Holmes, Tomey, Von Appen, June Jones? None motivated me to attend the games. I know. I know. Many of you still recall the glory days of going to the Sugar Bowl. Until now. Unfortunately my lady friend is unable to walk the distance from the parking lot to the stadium (she refuses to use a wheelchair…pride) so for the first time I will subscribe to PPV for the season. For me, now it begins.

    Welcome, Coach Chow.

    GO BOWS!

  116. jkjones December 28, 2011 11:03 am

@115. better late than never brah. ggod stuff. if you are a positive sign, perhaps, many fans will comeback too. enjoy the games 🙂

25 cents burgers… I think Jack in the Box was the last place that offered those .. back in the days…

  119. Kevin December 28, 2011 11:14 am

.25 will buy you a dirty look today.

    😆

  120. TYaiea December 28, 2011 11:17 am

Kaneohe Res, from what I understand next year when UH joins the MWC there will be no PPV.

  121. Couch potato December 28, 2011 11:19 am

25¢ let me park on the street for 10 minutes.

  122. Capitolist/WassupDoc December 28, 2011 11:20 am

    Kevin:

    December 28th, 2011 at 9:34 am

Parking to go up to $6.00 or was it $7.00?

    Starting next month.

Pretty sure thats what I read.

There will be public hearings and a vote by the Board of REgents on the parking increases. The decision – very likely to pass – would go into effect on July 1, 2012. The increases would not only impact daily but also monthly, semester and annual parking fees as well.

The increase for the parking garage is likely to go from $5 to $6 after 4 pm.

  123. jkjones December 28, 2011 11:20 am

there should be some subscription service available in 2012. these guys wont miss an opportunity to turn a buck.

  124. Couch potato December 28, 2011 11:25 am

    ummmm:

Parking Services announces the following increases to visitor parking rates on the UH Mānoa campus, effective January 1, 2012.

    LOWER CAMPUS PARKING STRUCTURE

    Mon – Fri, 5am – 4pm: $5.00

    Mon – Fri, 4pm – closing: $6.00

    Saturday & Special Events, 5am – closing: $6.00

  125. Capitolist/WassupDoc December 28, 2011 11:29 am

The parking fee issue was raised at the last Board of Regents meeting – the public hearings are for the passes and not the daily fees. Sorry about that.

We use the bus all the time – much cheaper than buying gas – and park in a variety of free locations accessed by Nos. 4, 6, 1, and the Country bus. We also park in the greater University or lower Wai`alae areas and walk over to the lower campus – epsecially for baseball and softball daytime games on weekends.

  126. al December 28, 2011 11:29 am

  130. TYaiea December 28, 2011 11:39 am

cp, a guy drove from LA to NY in an electric car and cost for electricity was ten bucks, but the extension cord was ten thousand bucks. lol

  131. 808Bowler December 28, 2011 11:49 am

Nice headline. Came from one of my all time favorite movies.

Oooo heard Lakalaka may be intrested in staying home. Via jp show.

  132. madeinhawaii December 28, 2011 11:49 am

I think there will still be PPV.. but the revenues will go to the MWC to be distributed among ALL MWC members… which makes one wonder if it’s worth keeping.

  133. papajoe2 December 28, 2011 11:55 am

#134 mih, I hope its cheaper than the $500 that I paid last year.

  134. A-House December 28, 2011 12:03 pm

    UH parking rates:

so, if you go in early, before 4 pm, no need to pay $6?

who goin check when you leave?

  135. A-House December 28, 2011 12:05 pm

someone mentioned that 2 QBs are transferring – who is the other one?

isn’t the 6′ 6″ Cali QB an incoming freshman – no transfer, only decommit to Utah and commit to UH? me walkin straight?

  136. Kevin December 28, 2011 12:06 pm

    A-House,

Funny thing about the cheaper fee. For a period of time, it was $4.00 before 5 or whatever. So on gamedays you could go early and get $4.00. BUT…. Eventually gamedays had the flat rate of $5.00 ALL DAY.

  137. A-House December 28, 2011 12:07 pm

now Mrs A-House goin tell me, “you cheap bugger, you” – only $1 more – if was $100 then we go early!

  138. papajoe2 December 28, 2011 12:07 pm

    Great Morning All!

    mih,

As of January 2, please refer to the acronym NCAA as Norm Chow’s Aerial Attack…

You tryna say, “Chow Would Chrow”?

    or

    Like Chow?

    Like Chrow?

(I know Kevin going like dat one! 🙂 )

  145. d1shima December 28, 2011 12:45 pm

    Wow!

Who said the Academies play “boring” option offenses?

AFA is holding up its end of a 56-point (so far) 1st half.

  146. d1shima December 28, 2011 12:47 pm

    😆

AFA makes an adjustment on their KO’s since they don’t have the team speed to run down and cover. Toledo has one to the house already.

The “Zoomies” are now kicking it to the 25! 😈

  147. A-House December 28, 2011 12:50 pm

    d1:

that sounds like UH kicking off!!

  148. madeinhawaii December 28, 2011 12:50 pm

    28 – 28 half time…

  149. madeinhawaii December 28, 2011 12:55 pm

Specials teams was always an enigma to me… I could never figure out why we were so bad at it. Returning and stopping the return… all those missed blocks and players not being able to pursue…

  150. Bulla December 28, 2011 12:59 pm

    kaneohe resident,

welcome to the craziness…..some days it’s pretty good, some days not too good, and somedays it’s all good, but either way, it’s good… 🙂

  151. d1shima December 28, 2011 12:59 pm

Special teams play is often a reflection of a team’s overall quality of depth

  152. al December 28, 2011 1:00 pm

ahouse…not a contest in the first place. we all have our birdies. some different from others. right now birdies want silence so as to not alarm the “opposition”.

but, lakalaka was quoted last week that he would like to hear from chow.

ajoe, its one transfer and two hs qb’s who may consider hawaii on feb 1st.

  153. madeinhawaii December 28, 2011 1:00 pm

    d1shima…

Das what I was thinking.. or it also could mean we have too many red-shirts.

  154. madeinhawaii December 28, 2011 1:02 pm

Sometimes I wonder if they shouldn’t be thrown into the fire after their gray shirt year… then if they struggle too much, have them take their red-shirt year to beef up.. muscle up… and hone their skills. Or in the case of academics, simply catch up.

  155. Buffoman December 28, 2011 1:03 pm

25 cents could buy: 1 Look, one Big Hunk, one Snickers, and one Good News (that one was 10 cents).

  158. madeinhawaii December 28, 2011 1:06 pm

Article on what is Pro-style football the BYU way..

May not completely apply to Chow’s method but I’m sure there are a lot of similarities… anyway it’s a good read.

  159. Couch potato December 28, 2011 1:09 pm

madeinhawaii, at least special team play made for good conversation and frustrating excitement. 😆

anyone think bright will make a good tight end? or at least a decent te?

  160. Pomai December 28, 2011 1:09 pm

My question is “WHY” the bump in $$ for parking, is it for higher labor or just more profit???

  161. 808Bowler December 28, 2011 1:09 pm

So who do u guys think out of the returning qbs next season fits the chow offense?

    I like Godfrey.

  162. DownSpout December 28, 2011 1:10 pm

Regarding Miano, why wouldn’t Chow beg to have him on staff?

    – NFL experence and ties.

    – Best walk-on program in the country.

    – Excellent recruiter.

    – Former UH player.

    – Local boy with local ties.

    – High energy and enthusiasm.

    – Proven manager, re: Speed and Quickness.

    – Loyal to the program and community.

Not keeping Miano on staff leads me to question Chow’s judgment. Period.

  163. Couch potato December 28, 2011 1:12 pm

    808Bowler, Shutter.

  164. urbankid December 28, 2011 1:14 pm

#162, would you choose someone to work for you that was gunning for the same job that you got?

  165. urbankid December 28, 2011 1:15 pm

would obama choose mccain as his vp back in 2008?

  166. MattyBoy December 28, 2011 1:15 pm

    Downspout,

Are you serious? Or just joking?

  167. MattyBoy December 28, 2011 1:17 pm

    Urbankid,

    Lol good one!

  168. Couch potato December 28, 2011 1:17 pm

DownSpout, it’s Chow’s call. could be differences in philosophies, could be Chow wants to work with people he has worked with before, could be Miano wanted to move on, could be many factors in deciding who stays who goes.

  169. MattyBoy December 28, 2011 1:19 pm

Chow Beg Miano??? You’re kidding right? Shouldn’t it be the other way around?

  170. Mike Salesses December 28, 2011 1:19 pm

When I originally commented I clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get four emails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove me from that service? Thanks!

  171. urbankid December 28, 2011 1:19 pm

you NEVER ever see a new coach come in and retain the interim coach. Why? To prevent future internal conflicts among admin, staff and players.

  172. Couch potato December 28, 2011 1:20 pm

no one questioned my judgement on my first wife. not to my face i mean. now the third wife, i question myself.

  173. al December 28, 2011 1:21 pm

it will be interesting to see who makes up the final list of asst coaches and coordinators.

recruit will also be predicated by that list and whom, recruits, will follow them to hawaii.

any verbal is just that and can be rescinded without consequence by either parties, both players and colleges up until the signing date.

it could get even more interesting after the spring camp ends. i imagine several freshman and sophs will be seeking a release from their scholies and looking elsewhere.

  174. Couch potato December 28, 2011 1:24 pm

al, is the reason seeking a release due to a change in off/def systems? or practice too hard? no can handle.

  175. madeinhawaii December 28, 2011 1:25 pm

Problem with having too many friends on staff is when you have to be firm with them. Insofar as the football program is concerned, the Head Coach is the Employer.. the others, his employees. Chow may keep one friend on board to be his eyes and ears, as well as, his sounding board, but other than that, I don’t think he’ll choose among his close friends. Maybe from assistants and grad assistants he’s worked with before.

  176. madeinhawaii December 28, 2011 1:25 pm

I tried to cut that passage out from my comment box and it got posted instead.. weird.. oh well… nothing new there.

  177. Couch potato December 28, 2011 1:28 pm

so i read it’s going to be more difficult scheduling pac-12 teams. booooooo.

  178. madeinhawaii December 28, 2011 1:28 pm

    al,

Well, if we had 21 initials this season, there is room for 4 more if 4 relinquish their scholarships or are cut. Doubtful that Chow would offer a scholie to a non-scholarship player that is already on the team, so anything more than the max allowable initials doesn’t provide any advantages.

  179. al December 28, 2011 1:29 pm

    162…too funny.

but, ask yourself this. why is it that only ryan mouton made somebody’s roster? oh and mana silva. in all those years.

ask yourself this, why is is that several potential nfl’ers were cut so quickly due to the lack of proper techniques.

then ask yourself this, why is it that no one was breaking down the barn door to get to that certain asst coach that you hold so highly?

  180. madeinhawaii December 28, 2011 1:29 pm

    couch potato,

Which may explain why the 2014 and beyond schedules look so bare…

  181. Buffoman December 28, 2011 1:30 pm

I believe that bright would have to grow his arms, especially across the middle in traffic. He had a tendancy to shorten his arms when going across the middle. That tells me that he does not have the “Salas gene” that is “let me hit somebody once I’ve made this catch” or “let ’em hit me with their best shot and I’ll still hold on and will still bounce up first”.

He never impressed me as a willing downfield blocker. In replays you’d see him standing around more than with his body on a body. If he had the downfield blocking mentality like Bess did, wow!

Now, that being said, he has the build and could be a terrific tight end, he just needs to want it it and would be willing to pay the price to get it.

  182. al December 28, 2011 1:30 pm

    174…probably all of the above.

  183. 808Bowler December 28, 2011 1:33 pm

    Ya I can see shutter.

  184. Don Weir (We-ah) December 28, 2011 1:33 pm

    ST

Give me a shout and I will send you the artwork that Brandon Kop has come up with for the grassroots t-shirt fundraiser.

    Tom Mui

PolyMom’s package to you sent via Priority Mial yesterday. Please distribute as you see fit.

    T-Shirt Update

The money raised from these shirts will go to help defray the cost of summer school for football players. Even though it will be a small total amount it is a grassroots campaign that shows our backing of Coach Chow and the ‘new’ Warrior Football Program.

I ordered 144 (Gildan 6.1oz) shirts only, with one in a Robert Kekaula size for Robert. I intend to offer to Tsaiko’s, FB Alums, and Letterwinners first.

Since this is a fundraiser for FB summer school we are looking at pricing these as a one time only benefit: $20@

I’d like to deliver to O’ahu residents on set dates/places and mail out to neighbor islands and the mainland. This will keep costs down and increase the amount of the contribution.

    Slugger

Once again I would ask for your kokua in helping with the distribution process. Please shoot me an e-mail or call.

  185. kruzen December 28, 2011 1:34 pm

If scholie players in good academic standing are released, would that affect the total number of scholarships allowed? Also, what if they’re not in good academic standing?

  186. Kevin December 28, 2011 1:34 pm

In spite of someone I don’t like, I would hire someone that was also in the running for the same job I currently have.

Then I’d fire them on their birthday or at the company Christmas party.

    😈

  187. truegreen December 28, 2011 1:35 pm

urbankid #165: no but he did choose hillary clinton as his secretary of state. how you figgah?

  188. Really December 28, 2011 1:35 pm

For those of us who don’t know, this is not meant to be insulting in any way. When a coach is fired, so is his staff. They are fired as a whole for their lack of performance. ALL OF THEM. The new head coach can retain who he wants, but this seldom happens, especially if a coach has tried full on to get the head coaching position. A person who does this is looked at as a future problem.

Miano stayed here with self promotion and poor performance. His secondary was terrible, he flopped big time as a one year Co-DC and he spent more time working working for his speed and quickness than coaching his DBs. His walk on program was more of his focus than his regular recruiting and his secondary showed it every year. He was not even close to Head Coaching material resume wise, and has never coached anywhere but at UH. It is the big fish in a small pond disease that ultimately did him in. He has no national reputation of any kind as a DB coach, he as put few players in 13 years in the NFL yet he still thought he could get the HC position? Delusions of grandeur. Now he was a GREAT UH player, a solid NFL player with a great story and he loves Hawaii, that is true.

The truth is after 35 years of coaching on the mainland, it is probably easy to assume he has 10-20 choices at each positon in young to old coaches who can outcoach, out recruit and ultimately be loyal to him and him only. I think you will see with Coach Chow that non-performing position coaches will be asked to keep their mouths closed, will not have buddy buddy relationships with reporters they use for self promotion and trade favors and surely will not have 13 years to prove they get their position stocked with talent, coach the heck out of it and expect nothing less, or they will be packing their bags, “local” or not.

And football will be their first job, not a hobby they pull in 6 figures for.

There’s a new sheriff in town and he means business. Welcome Coach Chow, it’s going to be nice to root for a Division One A program that recruits, plays and conducts itself like a Division One A Program. We’ve been waiting for ya!

  189. Couch potato December 28, 2011 1:36 pm

Buffoman, i noticed that too, the bent arms in trying to catch overthrown balls with a defender bearing down on him. i’m not questioning his manhood since he could have thought the pass was uncatchable. at any rate, a change in attitude and demeanor will be mandatory this upcoming season. no can blame the toe anymore. suck it up.

actually i shouldn’t talk since i call it like it is from a couch. 😆

  190. al December 28, 2011 1:38 pm

178…not quite sure what you mean.

i think you are saying this. if we hypothetically had 21 scholies to give on feb 1, which we don’t – its far less that that, and four or more current scholie guys leave the program by the end of spring ball.

you are saying that chow would not offer it to a non-scholie player.

to which i say, that could happen. lets say that chow brings in some invited walk-ons this january. if they show their quality, then it would behoove him to either offer now or bring in a late prospect that could help the program.

I think they should cordon a big area in the stadium for fans to go where they can get internet access, watch the game on a big projector screen or two.. and make all the noise they want and multi-task. Make sure there a couple of big guards in the area. Maybe just for UH students and Alumni and Alumni w/guest… That way the UH kids that want to just hang out can go there and hang.. those that want to cheer the team on will go to the bleachers.. and if the Warriors are winning big time, all will go to the bleachers… (no minors without a legal guardian should be allowed in the space.)

Saw that Midweek writer Bob Jones is at it again criticizing the $550K salary of “a football coach”, paying travel subsidies, and how “poor little UH Manoa” is a manini program in a lost cause.

Jones is entitled to his opinion and it’s not the first time he’s written negative articles about the UH football program. I guess he appeals to the readers who could care less about football or UH in general. Did his kids even attend UH? I guess when you’ve been out of the limelight for so long, you need to write stuff like that to get people to notice you.

Say what you want about Joe Moore, but at least he’s a staunch UH backer, not a hater.

Hey #188 Really….. its great to act like a division 1 team???? what kind of stupid statement is that? all because a coach comes in and makes his decisions and implements his type of program, we are now a true division 1 program? I dont agree with Chow’s decision to get rid of Miano, but that is his call. Let’s just wait and see what happens over next couple of years before we can annoit Chow as the best thing to ever happen. When he wins 3-4 bowl games, sends a Heisman finalist to New York and makes a BCS game, then you can raise him up. We had a rough 4 years, a lot of ups and downs, but I can promise you that their a whole lot of programs who would love to be where we are at in terms of wins and losses over the last 10 years.

  250. DownSpout December 28, 2011 3:44 pm

Really, now… How can you ever trust the judgment of a guy who–in one of his first decisions as a head football coach–pulls such a big, huge boner as to not retaining Miano? The correct answer, of course, is this: you can’t trust the judgment of such a guy. Purely and simply, it defies all logic and reason, and is, I’m afraid, a bad omen for the future of UH football. “Get behind the new coach. Give him a chance.” they tell us. What’s that? Get behind a coach who has already demonstrated an inability to make wise decisions. All I can say is, heaven help us Warrior fans and the future of Hawaii football. ;-(

Don’t forget, UA is making our second set of green jerseys with black trim and cammo uniforms as well.

For those who want to read up on the Pac-12/Big 10 partnership, here are some links. First, the link from CBS Sports:

with both conferences committed to nine-game league schedules, another fixed non-conference matchup will leave schools with annual non-league rivalries (think Michigan or USC, and their series with Notre Dame) with just one open “breather” date to fill on their schedules.

I hope that he mentors Rolo…he’s got potential

  274. Garret December 28, 2011 5:17 pm

The ESPN article quotes the Pac-12 commissioner saying that the Pac-12 will get the benefits of expansion without having to expand (and share the money with other schools). In other words, this deal not only hurts UH in scheduling Pac-12 teams, but it seems to prevent UH from ever joining the Pac-12 since they won’t be expanding.

Added Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott, “It’s a flexible approach to achieving some of the benefits of expansion without dealing with some of the other structural issues.”

“We’ve obviously explored the possibility of going beyond 12 [teams],” said Scott. “I’ve been a believer, philosophically, of that if it made sense. Now I don’t see us expanding anytime in the foreseeable future. A lot of what we can do through collaborating with the Big Ten will help us accomplish some of the same things.”

The details remain fluid, but the probable first phase of the partnership would include increased Pac-12 vs. Big Ten games in men’s and women’s basketball, as well as in Olympic sports. Those changes will begin in the 2012-13 academic year.

  275. Garret December 28, 2011 5:20 pm

I’ve mentioned how I’d like for UH to set up a neutral site game at a location like the Rose Bowl to make big $$$ and to help with mainland recruiting. One less-publicized part of the Pac-12/Big 10 deal is that they will be playing a neutral-site game at the Rose Bowl every year. This will give the Pac-12 and Big 10 enhanced recruiting in Southern California…where UH gets so many recruits.

Plans include a preseason game at the Rose Bowl, possibly as soon as 2013 or 2014, involving schools from each conference.

The leagues, combined, have more than 17,000 athletes competing on 550 teams. Delany envisions Olympic sports challenge between the conferences and Ryder Cup-style events with the golf programs.

  278. HawaiiMongoose December 28, 2011 5:31 pm

Garret, it appears UH needs to find itself a Pac-12 school with which to establish an “annual non-league rivalry”… or more realistically, two Pac-12 schools with which to establish a biannual non-league rivalry. That sounds like a stretch, but programs that recruit the Islands heavily — Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, USC, Cal — might be willing to consider it. (I didn’t include Utah or Colorado since they would presumably prefer to preserve in-state rivalry games with BYU and Colorado State respectively.)

  279. HawaiiMongoose December 28, 2011 5:35 pm

And it doesn’t surprise me that the Pac-12 won’t be expanding again in the foreseeable future. To make financial sense such an expansion would have to include Texas, and I never really believed that Texas would make the move west. The only factor more important than money in conference realignment is ego, and Texas has far too large an ego to trade dominating the Big 12 for sharing the limelight in a Pac-16.

  280. Kevin December 28, 2011 5:37 pm

Just a thought. In his press conference, Coach Chow said flat out “I am not a run and shoot guy… I prefer the pro style, I believe in balance”… and so forth.

Today in ST’s article/interview with Chow ST mentions some elements of the R&S. Now granted, the pass/spread offense is pretty much common place and more QBs in the pros are setting up shotgun. No secret.

However, am I reading too much into this brief statement to ASSUME that Coach Chow met with Rolovich already and is considering retaining him as a “collaboration” of sorts must have occurred during their interview????

  281. Kevin December 28, 2011 5:40 pm

    Yeppers…

The Under Armour deal is the BEST deal for all parties involved.

Nike has the style IF you are the elite BCS program (Boise State is the ONE exception) that already doesn’t need that much support as is.

You don’t dump the girl that treats you well just to try to sit next to the popular girl again that treated you like crap for the two weeks you dated because she lost a bet.

  282. HawaiiMongoose December 28, 2011 5:45 pm

Kevin, it may be that Coach Chow has now had an opportunity to assess the players coming back next year and figured out that the team’s best chance for success is a gradual transition from the R&S rather than a complete change of offense.

Anyone wants to crawl back to Nike probably isn’t considering how the football team was using their personal basketball shorts to practice and OLD OLD Reebok jerseys to practice. I remember Daniel Libre’s white practice jersey beat to hell and they weren’t even Nike brand because Nike couldn’t even foot the bill to provide the team will full practice and workout gear.

How many times were players using old personal cotton shirts in the weight room and what not.

Now, no worries. ALL taken care of by UA.

Plus, how long did it take for the FANS to receive Nike-branded replica jerseys. Even under Nike, UH only had cheap Russell Athletic as the brand for the replica jerseys… It wasn’t until Colt’s senior year did Nike finally make Nike branded replica jerseys in #s 15, 7, and 1.

Of course, Nike BIGGEST debacle is the Sugar Bowl, time and time again I keep mentioning this as who can forget the all white tapa logo-less pants Nike couldn’t finish in time for our program’s biggest game to date…

Good point! I just hope Rolo gets a shot as it would benefit him, BUT the question is.. how does having Rolo on his staff benefit Chow and the program going forward?

  285. PolyMom December 28, 2011 6:09 pm

No to changing brands. Under Armour is a great company. Had 1000 people bought 1 share when UH made the deal…that money would be worth over 1,000,000.00. It is going to be bigger then Nike. Nike stock has plunged since they came into the picture. Plus they are innovative in their gear. At UA high this year was 90 dollars a share. When UH signed the deal it was like 13 bucks a share. I bought a bunch not knowing even who they were since UA is an east coast thing…and I scored.

@Kevin yes you are reading to much into the statement.

If we have to make a deal with a PAC 12 School…my choice UCLA. You do not have to hire protection to attend their games. USC games so dangerous you must hire your own security. Sad but true.

USC, Colorado and Washington are on the schedule. USC 2012/2013; Washington 2013/2015; Colorado 2014/2015. BYU 2012/2013; Army 2013/2018/2019; Navy 2013/2015. The cupboard is not bare. With Norm Chow on board, I feel he will greatly influence the continuation of games with these schools and allow the AD to be able to add more BCS and other schools with great tradition.

  296. rainbowfan December 28, 2011 7:04 pm

Although Chow has a great resume, can someone explain what happened in his 3 yrs. at UCLA ? There were injuries, but that doesn’t explain the lack of offense in those 3 years. In 2010, per wikipedia, UCLA finishing ranked 116th out of 120 teams nationally in passing yardage and 118th in passing efficiency, as they tried to install a pistol offense; in his three seasons, the team had a 15-22 record.

Titan’s offense wasn’t that good either when he was there. I wouldn’t expect a better record than McMackin would have had in the next 3 years.

  297. madeinhawaii December 28, 2011 7:21 pm

Chow was the Titans’ offensive coordinator from 2005 to 2007. During this time, the Titans had non-losing seasons in 2006 (8-8) and 2007 (10-6), and appeared in the 2007 AFC Playoffs. In 2007, the Titans were 21st overall in total offense, with a total of nine touchdown passes.

Raibowfan..Norm Chow did not have a chance to develop his players. Kevin Prince his starting QB was a disaster. Then we had Bruhaus…another disaster. The O Line was terrible. Working for Slick Rick as they call him in LA with the horrible recruiter a guy named Angus he is a disaster. I hope when I go back to LA he is fired. He was a hive problem with their program. And money is a huge factor at UCLA. The poly boys on that team are so nice. I felt bad for them.

  301. AlaWai December 28, 2011 7:34 pm

Kevin, Poly Mom et al: Rolo is more than an R&S guy. He played in a pro-set in European NFL and led them to the finals. He played in Arena football. He has a very extensive play book that has been squelched by the HC. I hope he’s retained because he knows the offensive personnel better than anyone. He may have to step back from OC to QB coach, but will contribute and learn with the new HC.

  302. peternorth.org December 28, 2011 7:38 pm

  303. rainbowfan December 28, 2011 7:50 pm

    PolyMom & madeinhawaii,

Thanks for your insights, but his offense seemed to lack any imagination. I tuned in several times to watch UCLA on tv, but just saw a lot of three and outs.

I don’t expect too much better than what the UH offense did under McMackin, where there were a few three and outs.

  304. tommui December 28, 2011 7:54 pm

304 rainbowfan: oh ye of little faith …

  305. rainbowfan December 28, 2011 8:00 pm

just because you have tight ends, backs and a pro offense doesn’t guarantee success. The last time we had a west coast offense was the one run by von Appen.

  306. Mauiwarrior December 28, 2011 8:12 pm

Norm was handcuffed by the hc at ucla………

  307. wowlaulau December 28, 2011 8:13 pm

#306 lol, as well as not having tight ends, back and a pro offense.

  308. Really December 28, 2011 8:14 pm

#302 Rolo might have an extensive “playbook” but it sure looked like the pages on pass protection schemes had been ripped out over the years. The one thing JJ did with the run and shoot and where he took it too another level was with his personal touch on pass pro. He never wrote it down and never will, it’s in his head. If Rolo keeps learning and working he’ll be a great one someday……… but he still has an awful lot to learn. He’s gonna make a great QB coach for a D-1 program or a great o-coordinator for a D-1AA or JUCO program and work his way up. But to say he was “handcuffed” after being named o-coordinator after Mr. Viva Las Vegas fired Ron Lee is hard to believe. I think he just had trouble with pressure schemes and putting pass pro to match it and that’s something that comes with a little more seasoning. In his defense also, he had a QB who struggled throwing the ball downfield and or deep often. He’ll get there, he’s got all the tools and the smarts, but this year he showed his youth a bit.

  309. 808Fringe December 28, 2011 8:19 pm

#306 – WOW! You’re comparing Coach Chow to VA? Serious? Joke ya? Yo tommui…I no think he has any thee faith!!

  310. AlaWai December 28, 2011 8:22 pm

Really, need to look at 2010 and how the offense performed with an intact OL, quality receivers and a good RB.

  311. Really December 28, 2011 8:30 pm

#311 Great point. But recruiting was supposed be better under Mack than JJ according to his staff. It was slipping and the O’Line lacked depth terribly, the receivers lacked speed and the youngster was a power back and a good one with a good future but after him the running backs were D-1AA caliber. Recruiting is priority number one in big time football and holes were showing. That being said, no matter what the reasons, we didn’t handle pressure well at all this year. Missing Salas and Pilares (JJ recruits) being the most obvious loss

  312. rainbowfan December 28, 2011 8:31 pm

    #309,

According to B. Curren, Rolo didn’t have the last word on the offensive schemes. It was the mouse along with Mack. Rolo wanted to use tight ends sometimes and another back or something like that, but it was vetoed by the mouse. Mouse was too one track minded for his run and shoot to the detriment of the UH offense.

Also, i don’t see why ferd, dave reardon and bobby c are so gung ho for Chow, their optimism should be tempered by looking at the UCLA offense when he was there. Didn’t UCLA have adequate talent ?

  313. RedZone December 28, 2011 8:47 pm

Neuheisel sent Chow and some of his coaches to Nevada to learn from the guy who lost the Hawaii Bowl. He wanted to run the pistol. The Titans forced Vince Young on Chow. NC did not want him but they drafted him any way. You may be the OC but the offense you run may not entirely be what you want. The HC can veto.

The only time I bothered to watch anything with John Wayne in it, I was flipping thru the channels and he was in a conversation with some other guy about how he should take a bath and get a nice shave. The next scene was like 4 minutes of this other guy getting shaved with occasional shots of John Wayne looking on in rather “curious” interest.

    4 minutes…

    Shaving…

AND… to be honest with you… John Wayne had that aura that if you talked long enough with him, the “N” word might come out of his mouth.. no thanks.

  316. cocobean December 28, 2011 9:48 pm

    RBFan,

Chow’s presser was inspiring. The feel good vibes are still reverberating today. Chow’s got me and a lot of other people believing that better days are ahead for all of us.

I see nothing wrong with the media doing their best to keep the initial buzz Chow created going. It helps ticket sales and who knows it may even help in local recruiting. The recruits, their family, coaches and friends don’t live in a vacuum. They hear, see and read what’s going on.

That being said. I can see where you are coming from. Most of us are viewing things through rose colored glasses. That people may be overly optimistic of what Chow can accomplish. You see people jumping on the Chow Bandwagon but won’t climb on board yourself unless you see a tanigible reason to do so.

Several people I know share your views. They take the Missouri approach – Show Me. For me, I have a strong feeling Chow will lead us in the right direction. Towards respectability.

My question is “WHY” the bump in $$ for parking, is it for higher labor or just more profit???

Part of the increase will go to pay the significant increase in electricity rates for lighting in the parking garage and around the lower campus; another chunk of the change will go to hire additional parking attendants and special duty police officers because of the increase in attendance at various makai campus sports venues. Of couirse, we could save money by reducing the number of people attending basketball, volleyball, baseball & softballgames as well as football practices.

Great pair of basketball games tonight. Tomorrow, the two women’s games are at 4 pm and 6 pm with the men’s game at 8 pm. The last two game times are approximate. If you come to the Wahine game, you can stay for the men’s game fo’free.

Will be posting information about Sunday’s Greet The New Year Hike up Makapu`u and the free breakfast – buy your own brews – at The Shack in Hawaii Kai while watching any or all of the NFL games starting at 8 am.

Whatever happened to the Cattle/Chow Call or is/was it BIO?

    Really on # 309,

Some of the statements you made are either uninformed at best or simply ignorant. Do you realize that the previous season, UH led the nation in Passing Offense and that Moniz had over 5,000 yards passing and was the 9th best performance in NCAA Division 1 history. Yet you say that he’ll make a great Division 1 QB coach. You have the nerve to say he can only be a good OC for a D1AA or Div.3. That statement is so galling that I have to stifle myself right now. He already IS a great QB coach and OC, regardless of your baseless assessment and the lack of the usual potent Offense this year was directly attributable to the injuries and inconsistent protection from the O-Line. If Austin Hansen hadn’t been deemed ineligible for the year, we might’ve had some stability at the Tackle spot at least. I expect that O-Line situation should be a little better as we have some very talented (but inexperienced)

young linemen returning that can be very good if they can jell quickly. I really thought Gordy Shaw had the credentials to get it going, but we just didn’t see it come together; we saw our QBs often scrambling for their lives.

#321 if the increase in attendance is a cause for raising the parking prices, shouldn’t more cars = more money. 5 cars @ $5 per = $25. 1,000 cars at $5 per = $5,000.

  328. jm2375 December 28, 2011 11:02 pm

Try getting in/out of the parking garage when there’s 6000+ total at all the venues. It’s a mess. Which is one of the reasons we stay till Billy V announces that the SSC is now closed. And then we boo. 😆 For Warrior vb, the players come out and talk to the fans after the match for quite a while. The players are some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.

  329. el burro sabio December 28, 2011 11:03 pm

Rolo was handcuffed, did not have good QB or OL, Chow was handcuffed, did not have good QB or OL – hey who the hell knows what the real story is? Just let the two gunslingers have it out at 10 paces and we’ll find out the truth 🙂

On a serious note, Cal must still be in, he must have had conversations with Norm already. Dick must have spoken with Norm, they go way back, is he still in? The one coach that no one has been speculating about is Brian Smith, is he still in or has he not spoken with Norm yet? We will know the answers soon (I hope).

we won’t get him, but here’s a guy who truly earns his pay. he has probably the most undersized olinemen to work with in the past ten years (he did take a brief hiatus) and yet they produce some of the loftier numbers.

he is one of those that get unnoticed.

    http://www.broncosports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=54307&SPID=4061&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=9900&ATCLID=793030&Q_SEASON=2011

as joni mitchell would sing, “you don’t know what you got until it’s gone”

just like when cav left the oline in hawaii has never been the same.

  332. al December 28, 2011 11:33 pm

ebs…i often wondered where brian smith would line up if he were chosen by chow. although he has been the de facto running back coach for the past few years, he came by recommendation of cavanaugh as a rising star for oline mentoring.

however, for some reason mack never really got him going. again, the word on the street was that the hc felt he was teaching the wrong stuff after getting his (hc’s) ears full of stuff from others. when all along smith was trying to teach proper technique that had to be retaught after years of misguidance. smith probably should have left the islands to work under better conditions, but, he liked the hawaiian style. besides his wife is from hawaii.

  333. al December 28, 2011 11:40 pm

probably at least one incumbent assistant coach will get a job. whether another one or two land positions depends upon several things.

can they work with coach chow?

can they out work their boss?

    can they recruit?

can they work within the high ethical standards that have become the new norm?

can they be so disciplined themselves that they have no problem exercising the same?

can they translate the chow methodology of football to the players?

can they afford to live here with the given salary?

we should know as early as next tuesday, but, more likely from next wednesday on. not any sooner.

    stay tuned folks.

…after all these are exciting times.

Na Wahine pulled out a win over Alcorn State but the same issue arises, TO, 20 tonight. They won it on the FT line shooting 25 -33 to Alcorn State 4-11. Alcorn State had 73 FG attempts to UH 45, a large discrepancy, too large in my opinion, and they had more FG and 3 pt than UH but loss it at the FT line. Playing at home really helped UH.
