Best wishes to Kody Afusia, who is working out for the Green Bay Packers today.
In a unique scenario, Afusia recently parted ways with his agent. He was set to join the AFL’s Baltimore franchise when he received a call from Eliot Wolf, the Packers’ director of football operations. The Packers booked a ticket for Afusia to work out.

That is a artsie photo of Max Hendrie!
Nice article today about JR Hensley. Looks like a guy you want to be around.
Al Noga
June Jones
Colt Brennen
John Burns
Niko Noga
That’s tough, there are a lot of different combinations of names to add on that list. For sure though without any doubt Colt Brennan is on there though.
No particular order:
Levi Stanley
Blaine Gaison
Jesse Sapolu
Niko Noga
Timmy Chang
All local boys, all ushered in an era, and all are iconic.
Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
Look like more Ua on the way…
found this interesting article…http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/more-sports/think-big-69-396-pound-daniel-faalele-has-coaches-drooling%e2%80%94and-hes-never-played-a-down/ar-AAo0ykr?ocid=spartanntp
Pretty large person….
Any line on Big Isle football player David Fangupo? Saw his highlights on FB several years back but lost track.
Highlights were HILARIOUS! HUGE RB not particularly fast(But what 300# plus player is?-lol) but once got his steam up, simply ran over opposition!
UH should look into starting rugby program. Probably would attract more interest from Down Under/S Pacific. Does NCAA have rugby program?
Just my 2 cents.
1) Colt Brennan – 2nd runnerup for the Heisman Trophy; 58 TD passes in 2006; undefeated 12-0 Sugar Bowl team. Enuff said.
2) Jesse Sapolu – 4 year starter, All-WAC, multible Super Bowl for the SF 49ers.
3) Gary Allen – 5’9″ multi-purpose back; still the all time leader in rushing yards in a UH career.
4) Jason Elam – no question, he’s the best kicker in UH history, period! Both as a placekickers and as a punter. Someday, he’s be in the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton. Super Bowl champion.
5) Chad Owens – he was a very good receiver, but he’s was an All American as a kick returner where he excelled; arguable, he’s the most exciting football player in UH history. He was originally a walk-on from Roosevelt. What a steal, June Jones got.
Bratwurst and a cheese cap to Kody Afusia. Hope he makes
first string at Green Bay 🙂
Instead of five individuals as UH football best,
I think the whole team from years past.
Don’t know the years, but…
1) The team that beat Nebraska at their field…
2) The team that beat BYU for the first time in a long time…
3) The Sugar Bowl team…
4) _________________?
5) This year’s 2017 team 🙂
Bear with me, I’m just a lurker; it’s hard to come up with just five.
Colt Brennan
Chad Owens
Al Noga
Levi Stanley
Maa Tanuvasa or Jesse Sapolu
Top 5 is hard but id put
1. Colt brennan (heisman finalist)
2. Jesse Sapolu (4 super bowls)
3. Chad Owens (CFL legend)
4. Ashley lelie ( 1st round draft pick)
5. Al Noga
Cant go wrong though if u put in june jones, gary allen, timmy chang, heck from the final games of his last season id say nick rolovich deserves to be on that.
UH Mount Rushmore Players
1) Tom Kaulukukui
2) Al Noga
3) Jason Elam
4) Jesse Sapolu
5) Colt Brennan
Hope Rolo keeps in touch with big Daniel Faalele.
Thanks North Shore Fan for the interesting link.
Thought he would just be another slow giant,
but he dunks basketballs and plays rugby.
I’d probably put him in the backfield 🙂
Mt Rushmore player suggestion:
1907 to 1955: Tommy Kaulukukui
1956 to 1970: Jim Kalili
1971 to 1985: Jesse Sapolu
1986 to 2000: Jason Elam
2001 to present: Colt Brennan
My Hawaiian Rushmore would be:
– Colt Brennan
– Jason Elam
– Al Noga
– Jesse Sapolu
– Levi Stanley
I like all the choices mentioned but Rolo needs to find a place for Gov Burns. Without Gov Burns, Warrior football may not have become a D1 team, let alone a D1 any sport.
Boy it is going to be hard coming up with 5 names. No wonder Rolo is asking for assistance.
9.
I think if you’re going by UH teams, I’d say you gotta add the 1992 team. They won the programs first conference title and first bowl victory.
Colt, Sapolu, Naga, U can argue which 1, and Chad Owens and Kaulukukui. Arguments can be made for Elam but he is a kicker.
The problem with finding just a few players who’ve made and impact on UH Football is….ALL of these players are the foundation or the rock that built the team. This is one difficult task. The names mentioned so far are super great ones!
I would chose the five teams that have made the most impact. This way, future teams will have somewhat of a bench mark to shoot for….imho.
Since it is players
Noga Bros
Rich Miano
Chad Owens
Jesse Sapolu
Colt Brennan
Ipu Man….Faalele makes Isaako look small…
Kiko got some mean looking “coconut crackers” on his shoulders….
*Maa Tanuvasa – 2 Super Bowl Rings and Holiday Bowl
*Jesse Sapolu – 4 Super Bowls and member of a very good 1981 UH team (9-2).
*Jason Elam – 2 Super Bowl Rings and Holiday Bowl
*Richard Miano – Former walk-on to all WAC defensive back in 1983 and 1984. 11 years in the NFL as a player and 13 years as an assistant coach with UH.
*Chad Owens (Over Colt and Chang) most outstanding special teams player in the CFL for the 2010 season and CFL Most Outstanding Player Award and Grey Cup winner in 2012. Part of 4 winning seasons and 3 bowl games (2 wins) at UH. Plus his performance against BYU 2001, Northwestern 2004, and MST 2004 where just out of this world.
Colt Brennan
Al Noga

Should be “Mount Rockmore” and my choice would be Jeris White, Radford grad. 4 year starter, 2nd round draft choice, nine year NFL career at CB Super Bowl Champ with Washington. I rest my case. First player from Hawaii to ever win Super Bowl-
#10 Do you mean the 1930 team that beat BYU 49-13?
Jesse Sapolu
Falaniko Noga
Gary Allen
Levi Stanley
Colt Brennan – I mean Colt seems a little undone these days but he’s still our only Heisman finalist.
Colt Brennan
Gary Allen
Jesse Sapolu
Al Noga
Jeris White
Top Five Oldsters
Jeris White, CB (All-American & NFL veteran)
Larry Sherrer, RB (1st 1,000-yard rusher, Little All-American, CFL)
Levi Stanley, DT (Career UH tackle leader for years)
Larry Cole, DT (Long- time NFL player with Cowboys)
John Hoffman, DE (4-year NFL career, 6-7, 265 monster, Played with on UH Fearsome Foursome of Rengel (6-5, 265, Saints), Cole (Cowboys) at DT and Goodrich at opposite end — all earning all star honors!)
This was a difficult task. My five picks are:
Tommy Kaulukukui 1935
Levi Stanley DT 1968-70. ’72-73
Gary Allen TB 1978-81
Al Noga DT 1984-87
Colt Brennan QB 2005-07
Colt Brennan
Al Noga
Timmy Chang
Jesse Sapolu
Chad Owens
Just curious, are they going to do anything this year to honor the 10 year (wow time flies) anniversary of the Sugar Bowl team?
BTW … the 1967 Hawaii defense only allowed 208 yards per game. While Cole and Rengel were only at UH for that season, it was our best defense ever. It also provided the boost that put Hawaii on the map in West Coast football. I believe Cole, Rengel and Goodrich (sometimes a LB) earned All-Coast recognition. These were the pioneers who began to build the Hawaii football we’ve enjoyed since. Don’t forget … in the early 1960s, intercollegiate football at UH was disbanded.
Losing to Linfield…at home?
DQ’d
K…das really IT!
I don’t know but don’t you think the Mount Rushmore for UH players should be only based on their playing career at UH rather than also incorporating accomplishments in their pro careers?
My list based on those I got to see in action that gave me many “chickin skin” moments and memories.
Levi Stanley
Al Noga
Jessie Sapolu
Jason Elam
Colt Brennan
Hey Akamai … I’m not saying it was the best team ever, but I am saying it was the best defense Hawaii ever field (given time, place and quality of the program). And I’m not saying that team was even close to the overall team quality of even Norm Chow’s team talent … but everything is relative.
That defense put three guys off the front four played in the NFL … Larry Cole started for a decade with the Cowboys, John Hoffman played a couple years for the Redskins, then Bears, Cards and Broncos. Mike Rengel played one season for the Saints, while backup DT John Hammond signed as a free agent with the Redskins but didn’t make the cut. By most anyone’s standards that’s a heck of a good showing of quality and respect of their talent. With those guys … Hawaii began its assent in college football and gained respect from profession football as a program with talent.
So you’re right .. they lost their first game because it’s a team sport. I would still put that Fearsome Foursome d-line up against most any other in UH history.
Does anyone have any update on the scholies we still have available? Are we waiting for late qualifiers this summer or do we have open offers still out there ?
Al Noga
Colt Brennan
Chad Owens
Ashley Leile
Jesse Sapolu
Honorable mention: Travis LaBoy (WAC DPOY)
Sorry forgot Jason Elam needs to be in there somewhere
gotta add Nick Rolovich
great player at UH to head coach at UH
If we are going just based off the career at hawaii i would throw greg salas into the argument. He was phenomenal to watch.
Al Noga, Colt, Sapolu, Chang, Michael Carter
Sangamonkeith, I meant the 1990 rout of BYU :).
Another team to consider would be the 1924–25 team:
The Rainbows, under the guidance of coach Otto Klum,
completed back-to-back undefeated seasons.
The Rainbows outscore their opponents 606–29 in 18 games.
Teams who win have outstanding linemen.
The qb is only as good as his center, guards and tackles and ends,
as well as his backfield, and pass receivers…and coach 🙂
Best players if I had to choose, would be
Chad Owens…
Mark Tuinei 3-time Super Bowl Champ
Jesse Sapolu 4-time Super Bowl Champ
Colt Brennan
and…Rainbow running back Thomas Kaulukukui
HawaiÊ»i’s first All-American player and star on
HawaiÊ»i’s 1934 undefeated team
1. Levi Stanley
2. Blaine Garson
3. Jesse Sapolu
4. Tommy Kaulukukukui
5. Larry Price
Honorable Mention. Falaniko Noga, Larry Shearer, Albert Homes, Jeff Ulbrich, Jim Mills, Jason Elam, John Woodcock.
So difficult to choose only 5. But if it’s for the football offices, I think there should be several positions represented…
1) offensive lineman, (2) defensive lineman, (3) linebacker, (4) running back, (5) receiver, (6) QB, (7) safety/corner, (8) kicker.
My picks:
1. Jesse Sapolu
2.
3. Niko Noga
4. Tommy Kaulukukui
5. Chad Owens
6. Colt Brennan
7. Jason Elam
ooops…
6. Colt Brennan
7.
8. Jason Elam
5) Colt Brennan
4) Jason Elam
3) Jesse Sapolu
2) 2007 Sugar Bowl Team
1) The Noga Brothers
IMPOSSIBLE. I’M JUST PICKING ME AS BEST SPECTATOR EVER. DAS IT.
1. Colt Brennan
2. Al Noga
3. Gary Allen
4. Jesse Sapolu
5. Chad Owens, Niko Noga, or Levi Stanley. Can’t decide between these three…all truly had the heart of a Warrior.
Jessie Sapolu
Garrett Gabriel
Timmy Chang
Colt Brennan
June Jones
Jason Elam too!
Al Noga
Jesse Sapolu
Garrett Gabriel
Jason Elam
Colt Brennan
These are the star players from when UH football mattered the most to the most people.
If you’re going to pick best teams, Boolakanaka should chime in as he played on some of the best teams. Is he being modest, nah, cannot be, lol.
1. COLT BRENNAN
2. Gary Allen
3. Al Noga
4. Michael Carter
5. Jessie Sapolu
5a. Chad Owens(kills me that he never made an impact in the NFL; Jacksonville kept inviting him back because he must have looked spectacular in practice)
6. Jason Elam
Favorite player to watch: Travis Sims
Most frustrating player to watch: Justin Ah Yat
So much potential. How many kickers get an NFL tryout with 8 missed PAT
attempts.
Favorite coach: Bob Wagner
Bill Buckner Award: Carlton Oswalt.
That missed 19-yard field goal in Provo, to me, was infinitely more devastating than Walter Murray’s dropped TD pass in the end zone during the Cougars’ eventual march towards the National Championship that p*ssed off Bryant Gumbel.
Made me cry.
My alternate group would be–again in no particular order:
Rich Miano
Al Noga
Joe Onasai
Ashley Leile
Tommy Kaulukukui
As to the previous comments about best defense, well, I gotta stand-up for the guys I played with–83-85: Not absolutely certain, but we may have had the largest amount of guys that played on Sundays (NFL) and up north (CFL)—off the top my head— 3 Nogas (Niko, Pete and Al), Colin Scotts, K Bros (Kurt, Kent and Kyle), Rich Miano, John Taylor, Anthony Woodsen, Alvis Satele, ML Johnson, Mark Tuinei (Tui played only D line before going to the Cowboys as a free agent)….
Tommy “Grass Shack” Kaulukukui

Peong? hehe
Nogas, but if only one – Niko Noga
Colt B
Jesse S
Gary Allen
David Toloumu
Semari Ulufale
Pisa T
Jeff U
…how can I leave out, Gary, Maa, Ashley and Michael C. Ohh ohh and Garrett!!!
GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!
Would have liked to seen who AL, KEITH would haave chosen.
I’ve seen all of the selections played except for Tommy K (my PT teacher) and all were GREAT!
And my all-time tough top five—
Semeri Ulaufale
Carl Kennybrew
Rich Miano
Michael Carter
Niko Noga
Notice, how all those guys played up the middle….
And yeah, I want to see Kifis list!!!!
Sad Note: Jim Burns, retired Intermediate Court of Appeals Judge and son of the late Gov. John Burns, passed away today. He was a huge booster of UH Athletics, Warrior football in particular. I had the honor of sitting next to him in the Chancellor’s box at Aloha stadium in 2015. He was a very humble, witty gentleman who was local to the core. My condolences to Emmy (Tomimbang), son Brandon, who used to work with my wife, and the rest of the Burns ohana.
Holumua Judge Burns to the other side. A noble and dignified man, who was an uber presence behind the scenes of UH athletics, especially football. Specifically, he not only took interest in me, a lowly walkon, but he arranged for me to have summer jobs while I was at UH at the Family Courts as a bailiff in family courts. He is an integral part of why and how I went to law school.
Mahalo nui to a great and generous man!!!.
has this been posted ?
Kahuku freshman quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava tweeted Wednesday night that he has received a scholarship offer from Hawaii.
Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
Sad news, Rest Peacefully Jim..
boola…nice story about mentorship. Always appreciate stories like this about the unsung community heroes. People who have made a difference for our keikis.
maybe Coach Rolo can start a “Rock Hall of Fame”….like the list boolakanaka provided. These guys kind of put the Rock in Pride Rock.
boo, I concur on you Semeri Ulufale tough guy list. I can thank him for the damage of a few brain cells. Was clubbing to the head allowed back then? hehe
Yes Carl Kennybrew was one of my favorite linebackers. For tough guy got to add Itai Sataua.
Morning Tsaikos!
RIP Jim Burns.
My dad was friends with the late Gov.
Use to see Jim waiting for Emmy to pick him up from work when I was picking up my wife. Always had a smile when I waved at him.
Proud SLHS alumnus.
