Off and on

Today is Greg McMackin’s first off day of the season.
Sort of.
He will speak at today’s Na Koa meeting.
And then he will coordinate recruiting plans.
OK, that’s work. But with his schedule, it’s considered to be an off day.

* * *

If I’m not mistaken, UH football still does not have a full-time secretary. (Just student help, I think.) I bring this up because I called the office twice today and got voice mail.  Oh, wait. Maybe, they have caller ID.

Here’s last night’s banquet (photos courtesy of Bart Asato):

ST – I guess you have a day off also with no practice…. At least you can’t be late. I just hope your boy made it to school on time.

  2. addahknowjoe December 8, 2008 8:55 am

Stretch, I go keep you company till others arrive

  3. jm2375 December 8, 2008 8:56 am

    Top 5!

    Howzit Stretch & a-joe!

  4. Stephen Tsai December 8, 2008 8:57 am

    Stretch:
Actually, we got up late. We were 10 minutes late for practice.

  5. addahknowjoe December 8, 2008 8:57 am

Stretch, Mahalo for coordinating last nights Tsai-ko attendance to the UH banquet. Hopefully, next year we can take up more tables.

  6. Rob25 December 8, 2008 8:58 am

    Hey Top 10!

  7. ryan December 8, 2008 8:58 am

Heard that Zach Masch committed this weekend, any truth to this and are there any others?

  8. addahknowjoe December 8, 2008 8:59 am

good morning jm2375! Hope your day is starting off well.

  9. addahknowjoe December 8, 2008 9:00 am

    Rob25 good mornin!

Any word if everythings cool in Ronnie’s camp?

  10. al December 8, 2008 9:00 am

coach tsai….as an example you should have taken a lap for every minute that you were late.

  11. al December 8, 2008 9:01 am

    any word on ronnie’s son?

  12. Rob25 December 8, 2008 9:01 am

Thanks Stretch, myki, and sj for doing all the work on making last night another memorable one!

myki – how come you gotta drag sj away from his social butterfly activities? hahaha

    Hey A-joe and jm2375!

Stephen – I totally agree with you about the MCing last night. We were talking about it was lacking the electricity and entertainment. It was nice to have the performances last year and CJ Hawthorne’s speech was excellent! BTW, does any one have a video of that speech because I would love a copy!

  13. James December 8, 2008 9:03 am

Ron Lee is not the person to blame. He made the right calls. The problem rests with the O Line, Alexander the Great, and the receivers. The coach calls the plays and the players execute the plays.

All the people criticizing Ron Lee have been playing too much Madden football.

Personally, I don’t think Ron Lee is a great OC, but this does not affect or change my opinion regarding his play calling.

Why are you all so upset anyway? There is no way in hell the UH would have won this game. They were playing a real football team this time, not a team like the last three opponents. Alexander the Great is over rated, same with Nick Rolovich, his cousin.

UH can beat glorified high school teams like Weber State, but UH cannot play with real teams.

This will not change until UH hires some real coaches and recruits some real players.

Get Ken Niumatololo as HC, Ulima Afoa as AD, Al Noga as DC, and Fred Salanoa as OC. These guys will in turn recruit the right kind of players – true Warriors, like themselves.

  14. Rob25 December 8, 2008 9:03 am

    Bringing over from previous post:

It was a great night at the banquet! The Twins, Addahknowsports, Ronnie, Ian, Aaron, and I were in full groupie mode getting autographs from as many players as we could. UHfan808 and I even caught many after the banquet! What a difference from last year when you couldn’t get near some of the players and then we had to pay to get their autographs.

Just talked to Ronnie. Aaron is doing okay and they are leaving as schedules…shucks wanted them to stay longer. He will be on Benadryl and steroid for the next couple of days. Aaron doesn’t want to eat stuffing again! Ronnie said, “Who puts macadamia nuts in stuffing?”

My condolences to Garret and his family on their loss of Katie.

    Great news about Shutter!

  15. Rob25 December 8, 2008 9:07 am

A-joe – Wow you up early! Didn’t stay up all night and talk? Why break the trend? 😆 So who drove home? You? Geri?

It was good fun with you two this weekend. At least I didn’t strain a muscle last night doing the jumping with the band. I say next season we go down to the orange and do it with them!

  16. jojo ® December 8, 2008 9:08 am

    Hello Everyone!

What a weekend! Hot Import Nights was fun. The football game was suspenseful. And Sunday was eating frenzy!

    Have a great day!

  17. Stephen Tsai December 8, 2008 9:11 am

I think the tipped interception really changed the way UH played.
With a cushion, UH could tee off on the quarterback. When it’s a one-touchdown game, then Cincinnati gets to bring back its running game.

  18. Stephen Tsai December 8, 2008 9:13 am

Again, it was a nice night but Robert Kekaula asked: What’s up with the cranberries for the salad and the Uncle Ben’s rice?
    He wanted his croutons.
Or, as he said: “Can’t a brother get a bread crumb?”

  19. Stretch December 8, 2008 9:14 am

ST – I think RK was grumpy because there was no escalator up to the ballroom.

  20. djmitcho December 8, 2008 9:20 am

Good Morning Tsaikos. I hope everyone has a great day, even though it is a monday. Only 4 more days til the weekend.

  22. Maverick December 8, 2008 9:21 am

Well, counting today, Notre Dame has 3 practice days ahead of Hawaii, specifically for the Bowl game. These guys want it bad.

  24. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 8, 2008 9:31 am

    Steve Tsai,

mahalo for your response in the other post! much appreciated.

though let me ask it in a different way. IF IF IF we were higher someone from the jobless staffs right now i.e. Clemson, Auburn Tenn etc etc, which coach would you hire (w/o relationships to Mack etc, something that i also have a problem with but thats another story)? Dan Mullen is not a choice. I would do anything for that coordinator + his playbook. haha.

this question opens up to everyone too! =)

  25. jojo ® December 8, 2008 9:32 am

oh, and we had a gigi sighting at the craft fair on Saturday! HI GIGI!!!

  26. midori7 December 8, 2008 9:32 am

    Morning Tsaikos!

Enjoyed the banquet last night. Got lots of nice pictures, many thanks to the players for being so accessible & accomodating! Best part of the video recap was the splicing of the ha’a being performed at different games.

  27. al December 8, 2008 9:33 am

anybody going to the goodwill classic?

a dozen verbal commits to the warrior football program will be playing including future quarterbacks corey nielsen and cayman shutter. in fact, their journey as teammates commence this weekend as well as their competition for playing time.

all but one commit plays on the same team. should be fun as the list of players include many who we may still be recruiting and others who may be walking on.

no local tv. but, i will bet many coaches will be in the stands.

  28. al December 8, 2008 9:36 am

midori7…..tell your papa, real men go to craft fairs!
    hahahaha.

i had a great time yesterday, i counted, i ran into 10 people that i know and got to chat with them and they were all women. including newly promoted anchor stacy loewe.

i even got a 15 minute massage from an old aquaintance.

  29. Kazz December 8, 2008 9:38 am

I think we have a lot more in common with Notre Dame than people think.

(My thanks to Papa Leahey for the inspiration for this, NOT Frank Leahy)

    Notre Dame has “TD Jesus”

Hawaii has several people in Chinatown that think they actually are talking to Jesus.

Notre Dame has the “Golden Dome”.

    Hawaii has Golden Coin Bakery.

    Notre Dame = fighting irish.

Hawaii mokes = enjoy fighting the irish.

Notre Dame has the “Chicken Soup Game” (1979 Cotton Bowl vs Houston)

Hawaii has some fans that would rather consume soup during a football game than stand and cheer.

  30. Stretch December 8, 2008 9:39 am

Re: Hawaii Bowl & Notre Dame

From what I understand, the NCAA wanted to have all the teams without bowl alliances put “into a hat” and drawn for who goes where. ND would have been part of this group since all the bowls want ND to be part of their game. ND told the NCAA if it is not able to play in the Hawaii Bowl, then it will NOT participate in any bowl games. If this is correct, it’s good to have a team that wants to be here, rather than forced to take a MAC representative that will grumble the whole time here. ND brings credibility to the Hawaii Bowl.

Congratulations & Mahalo to Dave Matlin!!

  31. ryan December 8, 2008 9:40 am

Interesting comment about the Warriors from ESPN. They made a very accurate statement saying that Hawaii’s offensive line can’t run or pass block.

  32. Kekoa December 8, 2008 9:40 am

Rob25 ~ Was unable to contact Ronnie last night at Kaiser. Hope Aaron is ok. It certainly gave us all reason to be concerned at the Banquet as she very quietly and calmly took care of her emergency.

Kristin Update: Pneumonia problem stalling medical improvement. Status still critical as of 09:15 AM this morning.

Ryan Eastman: Safe travel home to our Tsaiko nephew to heal his battle wounds from a hard fought football campaign at Weber State.

Ke Akua we pray that you help us to heal our sick and injured loved ones this Holiday season.

  33. bb December 8, 2008 9:42 am

The South Bend Tribune story on the Hawaii Bowl and the comments is a must read. Gotta love the comment on how ND should have went to Boise to freeze their a$$ off instead of coming to Hawaii for a holiday.

Did someone mention that this years Hawaii Bowl features the past 2 Blowout Sugar Bowl Losers? And both ND and UH both got lit up for 41 points…and how we both had QBs going into the Sugar Bowl with high expectations but ultimately didn’t do so hot? Hey, why not come to Hawaii to determine which of the Sugar Bowl losers is better!

  34. Kazz December 8, 2008 9:42 am

Banquet was nice. Good to see a similar turnout like last season.

David Veikune is a great guy in person and real humble. For me, it’s hard to imagine that the crazy DE that is always going 100mph on every down is the same person I shared a few words with last night.

Can’t wait to see #94 on Sundays.

Oh and… RK should have been the MC.

  35. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 8, 2008 9:45 am

Ok before reading this. know that i am NOT refering to coaches hired or that i want them replaced. just thinking out loud.

ok i have to play devils advocate here. i seriously do not believe we should put “relationship to hawaii” as a major factor in considering coaching staff.

i may not know the numbers but it is my amateur (at best) opinion that some of the best coaches around the nation never had any relations with the schools they currently coach at nor even the state sometimes. If I am wrong then Ill bite my tongue hehe.

Look at the GT (johnson), Navy (Nuimatatolu sp.), Texas (Akina), UCLA (Chow). Using the hawaii relations guys as an example. These guys never played or lived in those respective schools or states yet they are given the chance because of the potential and skills in mind.

I dont know how much importance we place on “relationship to hawaii” when hiring coaches, but for me i could give a rip honestly. In the Aloha spirit, everyone is welcomed here! =)

re: espn comment on O-line blocking.

the truth is often interesting…but way more dissapointing.

  37. Postmanke December 8, 2008 9:47 am

I think when the recruiting dust settles, UH will be ranked right up the top w/ BSU for all non BCS conf schools. It wouldn’t surprise me if we are ranked ahead of many BCS schools in recruiting.

So in terms of recruiting, the knifes are pretty sharp.

  38. NYUH December 8, 2008 9:54 am

    James,

I was starting to take your post seriously before I realized you were a hater.

will da recruiting still be that highly ranked even if we lose out on Mageo, Tepa, GDL, Nobriga, and now Williams…hope we’re able to keep at least 3 of these 5 guyz….great to see another local boy that wants to stay home and play for da warriors

Interesting comment about the Warriors from ESPN. They made a very accurate statement saying that Hawaii’s offensive line can’t run or pass block.

Yup, sometimes the truth hurts, but it being written nationally, I hope it gives the OL some motivation to prove them wrong.

Next year will have a lot of questions for the OL again . It will have back only Estes (I hope) as a regular starter and Kia and Pepa who were rotating. Steinhoff, Ah Soon and Tuitoi-Mariner graduating.

  41. BowsForever December 8, 2008 10:16 am

The Cincinnati game was sort of a recap of everything that’s right and wrong with the Warriors. One of the “right” things, I would say, is the offense, at least when it’s being run/called correctly. How else did we get a madhouse Aloha Stadium and a 24-10 4th quarter lead? It wasn’t _all_ luck. Would anyone be calling for an OC change-up if we’d won the game? The momentum-changing play (the pick-six) probably wasn’t Ron Lee’s fault — Greg Alexander’s pass looked like it was thrown too low, making it an easy deflection — and nothing good tends to happen after a deflection. There were some great plays mixed in with some not-so-great plays. I’d give the staff one more year at least to see how they can further refine the offensive/defensive package.

  42. al December 8, 2008 10:17 am

stretch…..on that note, if hisatake is not the guy on oline then let’s put him back to the dline where we could wreck havoc.

  43. el guapo December 8, 2008 10:18 am

Paul Johnson was OC and then head coach at Georgia Southern for 8 years.

Ken Niumatalolo was an assistant at Navy for four years, then for five more before becoming head coach. He played here for Paul Johnson, who twice brought him to Navy.

Most assistant coaches seem to have a tie-in somewhere – they crossed paths with the head coach or come highly recommended. I don’t know what Akina’s or Chow’s connections are, but there is some connection.

  44. al December 8, 2008 10:19 am

    bowsforever………true.

  45. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 8, 2008 10:21 am

    BowsForever,

I agree. This year is a pass for the staff. On the stupid clock management they dont get a pass in my mind. But you cant fire that part of the brain and keep the rest. We shall see next year.

    The new mantra should be…

    START STRONG, FINISH STRONG

None of this BS conservative play calling anymore. Lets get rid of that nonsense and play hard at the bowl game and next year.

    go warriors.

  46. Stretch December 8, 2008 10:23 am

I noticed, and even BC/RK mentioned this on the radio, but Alexander threw a few passes sidearm. It worked out once for the TD but he needs to keep throwing high to keep the throws over the defenders heads and hands.

On that interception for TD play, I bet people would have grumbled that Ron Lee was too conservative if he ran the ball. He ran on first down and gained 5 yards, then tried the pass. It didn’t work out but at least he tried the pass on 2nd down rather than wait until 3rd down where the D knows we need to pass.

  47. Stretch December 8, 2008 10:25 am

What’s up with the program last night?? It misspelt Veikune’s name, “Veikuni”??!!?? Come on, just as bad as the MC trying to say Rocky’s last name.

  48. 808flowmaster December 8, 2008 10:28 am

I think the bottom line is we were spoiled with JJ at the helm of the offense. He’s like a Paul Johnson, where he’s developed his own intricate offense that only he can run at that high a level. It’s his brain that made UH an national offensive leader year after year.

Ron Lee is nowhere near JJ’s level…but really, there aren’t many out there in the college ranks who are. So the question is…Can we get another OC that’s a better offensive mind than RL who can recruit the local talent like he can? My guess is probably not right now.

Do I believe Cincinatti looked like a #13 team in the country? No. But they were and we moved the ball on them, put points on the board, and really could have and should have won the game. Considering that and the fact we had so many first-year starters and first year of Ron calling the plays, giving the #13 team in the country hard rubs is a good sign for the years to come.

  49. Stephen Tsai December 8, 2008 10:28 am

UH won’t be losing out on those commitments.

  50. Stretch December 8, 2008 10:29 am

Also, who is David Wong?? He was listed as a 1st year Letterman although his name was not called.

  51. al December 8, 2008 10:29 am

it appears to me that next year’s receivers will improve upon our yac something the offense so dearly missed this year.

  52. Stephen Tsai December 8, 2008 10:29 am

Also, LaCount will be playing for UH next year.
And don’t forget that Jake Heun and Jack Sula are going to make a difference. They’ll be like Cincinnati’s No. 23.

  53. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 8, 2008 10:29 am

    el guapo,

    thanks for the comments.

Urban Meyer, Chris Peterson, Rich Rodriguez (Mich), Bob Stoops, Bo Pelini, Les Miles…my rudamentary research shows no strong strong connections. outside of playing in the same conference at one point. that sort of thing

Any “strong” connections with the school they coach at now? Or was selection based upon merit at the top?

  54. Kazz December 8, 2008 10:30 am

    So….

Notre Dame in two weeks.

😈 Redemption 😈 in two weeks.

  55. Stretch December 8, 2008 10:30 am

JJ used the short pass like a running play.

  56. Stephen Tsai December 8, 2008 10:30 am

David Wong is Kaleo Wong. He looks like he graduated with me. The players call him “Uncle.” But he’s a tough guy.

  57. al December 8, 2008 10:35 am

st….all five are solid commits including and inspite of the recent reports coming out of new mexico military institute?

    that would be awesome.

  58. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 8, 2008 10:36 am

Notre Dame is another one. I remember reading on the notre dame fan sites and what not that the boosters were holding Weis back because of his relationship with the school and alumni. Guess they thought he was a likeable and defendable person. Although isnt he that secretive quiet Belachek type?

  59. al December 8, 2008 10:39 am

agree we have a lot of red/grayshirts that will make a difference for us. perhaps some or many of the 2009 class will make immediate impacts as well.

a lot of the improvement for next year has already begun. coaches and players know how close they came to a glorious season and will work hard towards it.

  60. Stephen Tsai December 8, 2008 10:41 am

    I’ve been told they’re solid.
I mean, I’m not sure what will happen on signing date. But UH is recruiting as if those players are solid. If not, it would have moved on to others.
Now, as I understand it, there is at least one verbal who isn’t going to make it academically. With that in mind, expect UH to go over the 25, although, in reality, it won’t be over the limit.

  61. (Jesse) James December 8, 2008 10:42 am

newcomer (sort of) of the year on offense has got to be greg salas.

from out of seemingly nowhere he had a great season and i thought he was the one guy on offense who showed grit and determination on every down. if we were a conventional offense he would be a great “speed tight end”.

  63. takoboy December 8, 2008 10:44 am

great to hear that we won’t be losing out on those 5 commits. hope hope hope that it’s true. guess we’ll find out about mageo for sure in exactly one week…

  64. Stephen Tsai December 8, 2008 10:44 am

The big problem UH has at the moment is there was a dropoff in recruiting following the superb 2005 class (of Colt Brennan, Davone Bess, Dan Kelly, Adam Leonard, Solomon Elimimian, Blaze Soares, Brashton Satele, John Estes, Laupepa Letuli, Aaron Kia, Rocky Savaiigaea, etc.)
UH is going to have numbers problem next year while it restocks. But it should be healthy after that.

  65. Stephen Tsai December 8, 2008 10:46 am

    Re: Salas.
The coaches knew Salas was going to be a big-time receiver. But they were concerned because Salas likes to train in California during the summer. As it turns out, Salas works out at different sites and gets a lot of different training and coaching.

  66. Manoa Mist December 8, 2008 10:48 am

ST, thanks for encouraging us on the recruiting front. Good to hear that we’ll keep most of them.

  68. Stretch December 8, 2008 10:51 am

newcomers (sort of) of the year on defense has got t be vaughn meatoga and jameel dowling.

these two guys stepped up. meatoga quietly snuck into the rotation at dt and held his own. next year and another 10 pounds he will be the stud in the middle. dowling, he came to play on every down having only been on the field one year is remarkable.

looking at the numbers we’ll have nearly 25 seniors next year. that is high but it won’t be so defensively laden like this year. once we get our numbers settled you won’t see as many jc guys coming in, unless he is another ryan mouton.

  73. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 8, 2008 11:01 am

    Late Good Morning Everyone:

Tsaiko Lurker Kamali’o NYC, the generous donor of two season tickets to Coach Alan Inaba’s after school program at Dole Middle School, will be visiting her family here in Hawa`i. She arrives on Friday, December 19, and leaves for the Big Island on Tuesday, December 23.

Unfortunately, that means she’ll miss both the Tsaiko Holiday Party at Murphy’s on the 18th as well as the T-Gate for the Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl on the 24th.

She’s a graduate of McKinley High School who moved to New York over 30 years ago to pursue a career in art. She still hasn’t forgotten her roots – her generosity has spurred a lot of support for Alan’s prgram including from Tsaikos.

Here’s what she said in her most recent e-mail:

I would love to get together for dinner or lunch. I arrive Friday evening on December 19 and leave for the Big Island on the 23rd. Unfortunately, I will miss the game and the T-gate. It would have been fun to finally put some faces to the names I always see on the Warrior Beat. But I have seen some of the Tsaiko karaoke performances on YouTube–I was particularly taken with Stephen’s rendition of “The LIon Sleeps Tonight.” How could anyone sleep?

I am putting together a luncheon Cattle Call for Sunday, December 21. Alan and Barry, his assistant coach, will be attending along with their wives.

Any suggestions for a location? Perhaps the new El Mariachi In Aiea mentioned a few weeks ago by Kekoa might be a possibility. Bear in mind that I will need to make a reservation ASAP given the time of year so we’ll need a headcout.

ST, with rodney bradley coming in, is there any chance the coaches are thinking of moving greg salas to slot? bigger target, excellent hands and smart. itd make way for more speed with bradley and lane on the outside. plus at 215lbs, hell be able to block LBs better than 160lbs slots. id prefers we leave lane and bradley at wr. salas rotating between wr and slot, i think hes smart enough to know multiple postions. henry and medeiros at slot. and pilares and blount being rotated between RB and slot, theyre our “reggie bush-like” play makers. then heun can be our big back.

  75. Stephen Tsai December 8, 2008 11:04 am

    Re: Ron Lee.
I think the situation dictated the game-calling, and everything was based on that tipped interception for a touchdown.
When UH is on the 1, Cincinnati is bringing the heat. In that compacted area, Alexander has little room to maneuver. So scrambles are dicey, passes are even dicier. UH couldn’t run a draw or dive because Cincinnati also was blitzing the middle.
Also, I think Libre was hurt on the previous series. If PIlares were available, then it’s a different story. But, say, you ran Farmer or Rego into the heart of an attacking defense. It’s three-and-out, anyway.
What UH needed was a booming kick on the free kick. But that didn’t happen, either.
I think Ron Lee has done a pretty good job in building an offense. Things would have been better if UH didn’t have to play on the road in two of their first three games.

  76. Stephen Tsai December 8, 2008 11:09 am

    letsgowarriors:
In the middle of the season, when the slots were getting no YAC, the idea was to motion Salas into the slot to take away the double coverage. But that plan was abaonded when Aaron Bain and MIchael Washington stepped up. And then David Farmer was used as a tight end, which also helped. I imagine they’ll have a four-man rotation at wideout with Salas, Lane, Bradley and either Avery or Pollard. Pilares, Medeiros, Ryan Henry and Dustin Blount will be competing at slot. And don’t forget that Jovonte Taylor will be back.

  77. duffer December 8, 2008 11:09 am

I thought the safety was the turning point of the game. Backed up in your own end zone and run a off tackle play, wished they would have passed the ball. Even if Libre didn’t fumble, I don’t think he would have made it out of the endzone. But what the heck does a golfer know!

  78. letsgowarriors December 8, 2008 11:13 am

i like pollard’s potential. he seems to make a move to make at least the 1st defender miss. another year in the weightroom will do him good. i would not mind a WR rotation of those 4. as for slots, i think a qb that gets the ball out quicker on short routes will produce more yac. its timing more than anything. a split second too late and the LB/S is tracking our slots down.

good season, im not as upset with the coaches as everyone else. especially since im a WSN poster. but i would like to see a lot of improvement next season. it’ll be hard with 35 seniors, but thats what we’re paying these coaches for.

  79. ryan December 8, 2008 11:16 am

ST, who do you think will be the stars on defense next year?

  80. FloridaTed December 8, 2008 11:17 am

    Thanks, ST.

  81. Stretch December 8, 2008 11:18 am

In the begining of the season, the coaches talk how they want to use more WR’s and rotate them. I didn’t see that happening this past season unless there were injuries. Do you think that plan was abandoned due to the drop off in the back-ups??

  82. jm2375 December 8, 2008 11:24 am

BTW – UHM graduation is Sat 12/20 @ the SSC. Coach Mac was on da radio this morning (sorry, can’t remember which station) and said that 18 out of the 35 seniors will graduate this month and the rest will graduate in May. Mac achieved 2 of his 3 goals this season. Pretty good for his first year and the 100% graduation goal is the most important!!

  83. J-Dog December 8, 2008 11:34 am

What about Rick Taylor, Mike Tinoco, and Craig Bell in the mix at WR?

  84. homey December 8, 2008 11:35 am

It is hard for me to imagine that Steve Sarkisian is the 4th highest paid coach in the Pac-10. His guaranteed salary is above Dennis Erickson (ASU), Rick Neuheisel (UCLA), Mike Riley (Oregon State), etc.

One question a few of you have asked the last few days is where Steve Sarkisian’s reported annual salary of $1.85 million in guaranteed compensation will rank him in the Pac-10.

  103. Garret December 8, 2008 12:03 pm

Funny how this New Jersey DL recruit tried to get UCLA to give him a layover in Chicago during his recruiting visit…the recruit is committed to Notre Dame and could have visited Notre Dame on UCLA’s money!

The Hun School of Princeton (N.J.) defensive lineman Tyler Stockton was supposed to be at UCLA on an official visit this weekend, but it didn’t happen after the player and his father asked the Bruins staff to schedule a layover in Chicago.
Stockton is committed to Notre Dame, and I’m told UCLA found it a bit more than odd Stockton and his dad wanted to stop in the midwest en route to Los Angeles.

I was the one who mistakenly thought the Marine was Keith Mouton. However, I met Keith last night at the banquet and he apologized for missing the tailgate due to family first requirements – had to take of Mom and his aunties who came in for the game and banquet.

    letsgowarriors:

I too like Royce Pollard. Met his Dad as we were leaving NALO and saw him again last night at the banquet. He said Royce will do serious training during the “off-season” in increasing his speed including running in local races.

Article about the recruit that ryan mentioned above.

Former Nevada Union defensive lineman Zach Masch, who starred at defensive tackle for Arizona Western the past two seasons, has accepted a full-ride scholarship to play football for the University of Hawaii.

Masch’s father, Dean Masch, announced his son’s decision earlier today.

Masch, who had been weighing several scholarship offers, made up his mind during an official visit to the University of Hawaii over the weekend.

In choosing Hawaii, Masch will join former teammate Steele Jantz, a redshirt freshman quarterback, on the Warriors roster.

  106. Garret December 8, 2008 12:07 pm

    Al,

I agree with what you said about Greg Salas! He had a great season and played hurt from early during the Florida game. The Warriors can depend on him and it will be great to see how he develops as he improves each year.

  107. Stretch December 8, 2008 12:10 pm

  110. Kekoa December 8, 2008 12:21 pm

Al ~ The Fonoti family is related by marriage to us thru my eldest daughter. My grandson Pono Fonoti and grandaughter Kela Fonoti are proud followers of thier cousin. Spoke to John last night at the banquet and told him we are looking forward to his devastating “Katooshment” activities in the upcoming Hawaii Bowl.

Kela’s a Jr. and anchors her HS Volleyball team at 6’1″ 225 Lbs. Football coach wished that she could fill in his D-line. He saw how aggressive she attacks, and intimidates the boys by stuffing them at the net when she plays against the boys VB team for fun!

  111. Garret December 8, 2008 12:25 pm

Talking about the “dropoff” in recruiting after the 2005 class, I think that so far everyone has missed a key point. The defense in the 2005 season was weak, which was why the team couldn’t win–don’t blame it on Colt’s first year in the offense because UH still put up a lot of points.

So, the coaches decided to go the JC route and focus on *defense*. That was probably the only time I saw a JJ-coached team focus most of the recruiting attention on the defense! If I remember correctly, UH had 15 or 16 of the 20 players for the D (though JJ switched Hisatake to offense later).

Anyone bashing the 2006 recruiting class should not forget that the 2006 and 2007 seasons were in large part due to the improved defense, which was in large part due to the JC recruits brought in. Without the great 2006 and 2007 seasons, UH would *not* be in the position to recruit the solid freshmen they are getting now.

Off the top of my head, these 2006 recruits contributed right away to the 2006 team:

CJ Hawthorne (starter for part of 2006 on D, starter for 2007 on O)
Myron Newberry (starter for 2006 and 2007)
Jacob Patek (starter for 2006 and 2007)
Gerard Lewis (starter for 2006 and 2007)

Plus, we cannot forget these 2006 recruits:
    David Veikune (defensive MVP!)
Greg Salas (who had an awesome season this year!)
Elliott Purcell (I think he’ll contribute next year)
Spencer Smith (he’s significantly contributed on special teams)

I know that I’m missing others, but those are from memory. The key is that UH was in a bad situation on D after the 2005 season and loaded up on defense…so, people should not expect much from the 2005 offensive recruits (though Salas is nice). If the coaching staff evenly spread out the recruits on both sides of the ball and recruited mainly freshmen, then UH wouldn’t have had nearly the same level of success (in my opinion) in 2006 and 2007.

Because UH relied on JC recruits in 2006 (and players like Mouton in 2007), they have extra seniors graduating this year and next year. But the alternative would be to *not* have the Sugar Bowl season and let HF completely bankrupt the Athletic Department!

This is a standard issue I’ve seen at other schools too–do you take a greater number of JC recruits if you can get a higher level of JC recruits than freshmen? The BCS schools and the schools that are UH’s main competition for recruits might be able to get the top freshmen, which always puts you behind in recruiting unless you can get good JC players, win, and then use that success to get better freshmen recruits.

I’m guessing he’ll try to space out the announcements so that he has an article each day. Too bad for him that one recruit’s Dad already gave out the news and the paper I posted a link too has a full article about his commitment that they will publish tomorrow. I should be able to post that article before I go to sleep tonight.

Al ~ That’s true about not being able to coach genetic make-up. Pono was too overly aggressive and hard to control. The football coaches said his initials *PF* stood for ‘Personal Foul.’ Then just add the reason, like…roughing the passer, or late hit, etc.

What’s up with the program last night?? It misspelt Veikune’s name, “Veikuni”??!!?? Come on, just as bad as the MC trying to say Rocky’s last name.

Not only that, but for $75 myki was “Marvis” and Aaron was “Aorou.” i also had to think twice about “George” Khevin Peoples and a couple of other names that the MC pronounced weird.

Thanks to all the players for giving a little face time to us fans. It is so much nicer than waiting in a throng of people at the stadium because we have access to almost all of the players.

sadly we lost freshman wr mitch farney to a heart attack while playing basketball back home.

    Aloha Tsaikos,
Sorry we haven’t been at the tailgates, but sounds like they are still going strong! Tough loss the other night. I don’t buy into all this nonsense about why/how we lost the game. A few more things went their way in the last quarter than our way and it sucks, but that’s football! Which one of you will be dressing up as Touchdown Jesus in the south endzone for the Hawaii Bowl? I nominate DPK…

  121. al December 8, 2008 1:04 pm

i am glad that now this coaching regime has understood that recruiting is the lifeblood of the program and have and still are working to refine their prospecting systems.

the results are showing and it is only going to get better. as we improve the facilities, the university of hawaii football warriors will become a serious player in college football.

we, as fans, must do our part. donate if you can, attend the games at all costs, be a positive influence on these young men in all ways, and always, always remember your roots by spreading the aloha that is hawaii.

    Big East And ACC:

If I recall correctly, the Big East was included in the BCS becasue of the likes of Miami and Florida St who later jumped ship to the ACC.

However, since jumping ship, both programs have experienced less than stellar records giving lesser named schools the opportunity to represent their conference and the Big East has been lacking of name recognition.

Recommend the BCS, immediately request that the top 5 or 6 teams in the MWC and WAC form a new BCS conference and then allow 2 spots for “mid-major” conference teams in BCS games IF they are of higher BCS and AP rank then other BCS conference teams.

This could also apply to a MWC and Conf USA reorganization, but the only teams who have been invited to “crash” the BCS to date have been former and current WAC teams – Utah, Boise St, and Hawaii.

Or, do a MWC/WAC and Conf USA/MAC combos with 2 new BCS conferences with winners automactically qualifying for a BCS bowl game. Further, any “mid-major” champ with a higher BCS/AP rank than other BCS teams would also get a bid to “crash the party”.

This will requrie the NCAA to take a hard look at all the “bowl games” and reduce them so it makes financial sense and making it easier to select teams to participate in bowl games. For example, the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl may disappear.

The top 2 ranked teams play for the mytical national championship trophy and others regulated to other BCS bowl with identical pay-out $$$.

  131. Garret December 8, 2008 1:31 pm

My computer simulation is taking a long time to run and I can’t do my next task until I find out the results…so I can blog while officially working!

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel has an article on Bess.

Chad Pennington’s favorite phrase is “quarterback-friendly.”

Players who fit that description usually turn into the Dolphin quarterback’s favorite target, which might explain why rookie receiver Davone Bess has caught 15 passes the past two weeks since being called on to replace injured starter Greg Camarillo.

Bess caught a season-high nine passes for 74 yards in Sunday’s 16-3 win over the Bills, following up on last weekend’s six-catch performance in the win over St. Louis.

“I’m always prepared,” Bess said. “Coach stresses every receiver has to be ready on every play, run the route like you’re the main receiver, so I’m expecting the ball.”

“There’s a lot to be said to being quarterback-friendly. Not a lot of people understand what that it is or how important that is,” said Pennington, who threw for 181 yards, surpassing 3,000 passing yards for the third time in his career.

“[Bess] understands how to get open and understands how to run routes and work defenders. He’s really patient. He does a great job of taking angles and getting open in spots.”

  132. Garret December 8, 2008 1:33 pm

The Palm Beach Post has a much longer article on how Bess is becoming Miami’s go-to WR.

As he did with Camarillo during the first 11 games, Pennington looks to Bess when he needs to move the chains. Three of Bess’s game-high nine catches Sunday against the Bills were for first downs.

He also caught a 15-yard pass on 3rd-and-16, setting up a 4th-and-1 run by fullback Lousaka Polite.

With 20 catches for 245 yards in the past three games, Bess, an undrafted free agent out of Hawaii, is turning out to the be a coup by the Dolphins’ front office.

Bess no doubt is benefiting from the attention being paid Ginn. But Ginn, the No. 9 pick in the 2007 draft, continues to do things that raise questions about whether he has the stuff of a No. 1 WR in the NFL.

On 3rd-and-3 from the Bills 49 during the Dolphins first series, Pennington threw a slant a bit ahead of Ginn, who pulled back as the ball arrived and failed to make the catch, fearing a hit from Bills S Donte Whitner.

    Pennington wasn’t happy.

But when he needs a play, Pennington is finding he can turn to Bess

MsLiz ~ Ian was so proud of his Ta2 last night he couldn’t wait to show me. It’s 808 over his heart with Oahu in place of the zero. It’s an original, but definetly not a threat to the Picasso collection. Very kewl.

  145. al December 8, 2008 1:52 pm

    homey….yeah right.

you are probably hurt about you not catching that one first.
hey, but i did enjoy myself. no forget to add a pound of bacon to your sauce. oh, and pork chops = crock pot four hours.

lv. a seated massage in the view of the general public. i forgot about you, now go back and pick up that couple at the “chapel of love”.

  146. jm2375 December 8, 2008 1:54 pm

Kekoa – you calling homey a pig? 😆

  147. homey December 8, 2008 1:54 pm

Kekoa – Ian’s ta2…did he shed a tear while he was getting poked? I gotta ask Ronnie to send me a pic!

  148. homey December 8, 2008 1:56 pm

jm2375 – I’ve been called a pig many times! soooooey! However, I do not do the Deliverance squeal ala Koamahu and (J)J.

  149. jm2375 December 8, 2008 1:56 pm

ST – how come you neva take pikchas at the banquet? No wonder only get 1 pikcha of a Tsaiko. You been slacking lately!! j/k But, that new camera of yours isn’t being used much lately.

  150. Rob25 December 8, 2008 1:58 pm

homey – Ian did get his tatoo. It was “808” with the “0” being an outline of Oahu. He said later that he may get it colored in or have the Hawaiian flag. He’s figuring it’ll hurt for the next couple of days.

  151. jm2375 December 8, 2008 2:00 pm

ketchup w/ laulau – a mother/daughter Tsaiko team was trying to get me to try it too! Eeeewwww.

  152. homey December 8, 2008 2:02 pm

Rob25 – nice! hurt is only weakness leaving his body… 😆 So what kind ta2 is Ronnie getting?

  153. Rob25 December 8, 2008 2:04 pm

jm2375 – I got pics with Veikune, Ingram, Lane, Grasso, Alexander, and The Iceman! I took more but they’re on UHFan808’s camera and there may be a couple on sj’s.

  154. Rob25 December 8, 2008 2:06 pm

homey – I think that Ronnie gets queasy when there is blood involved as well as needles! Never comes to mind.

This is the second year in a row that she wasn’t able to stay until the end of the banquet. She’s always leaving me there. Her flight just took off a few minutes ago.

  155. homey December 8, 2008 2:06 pm

jm237589772513 – if I eat my lau lau with kethcup I would have to say at least 10 hail mary’s and wear a metal cilice and flog myself.

  156. Rob25 December 8, 2008 2:08 pm

For some reason Stretch was on our table and Stretchette was sitting with Mama Stretchette and Mrs. A-House was sitting with them also, while A-House was next to Stretch. What is up with that? Good thing that Frank didn’t come and banish me to the other table!

  157. Stretch December 8, 2008 2:10 pm

Rob25 – no act, you loved sitting on the table of Tsaiko Men.

  158. homey December 8, 2008 2:11 pm

Rob5-to-the-power-of-2 – I give Ronnie credit for representing! What a die hard Warrior fan! Now if only you two would be more adventurous when it comes to trying foods of the world.

…and congrats to Michelle Wie for getting her tour card. membership has its advantages.

  159. jm2375 December 8, 2008 2:12 pm

    Rob25 – just giving Tsai-meister some grief.

    Homey – what’s “kethcup”? 😀

  160. homey December 8, 2008 2:14 pm

Rob25 – the reason for the split up is to have conversations with people that you don’t normally converse with. That’s why I hang around Koakane cause half the time I don’t understand what he is saying the other half goes in one ear and out the other.

  161. homey December 8, 2008 2:15 pm

jm#%^& – that’s what happens when you burp and type at the same time.

no more nothing in between to trap the sounds

  163. homey December 8, 2008 2:18 pm

Stretch – It’s like a muffler, no backpressure. Freer flowing sounds so I can enjoy the beer more.

  164. Stretch December 8, 2008 2:20 pm

homey – the free flowing deep rumbling sounds is coming out the no 2 hole.

  165. homey December 8, 2008 2:22 pm

Stretch – like when my wife tells me, “For the 10th time will you throw out the rubbish!!!”, I just tell her, “this is the first time you told me”. So in essence, I don’t have a nagging wife. Life is good.

  166. Jason December 8, 2008 2:23 pm

Mrs. A-House had to be there to make sure midori7 didn’t go crazy and kidnap any of the football players. 😀

myki won a very nice prize at Nā Koa today. Too bad for d1, the numbers bracketing his were called, but he didn’t win anything himself. No helmet today, obviously, but there was a very nice “consolation” prize. Man, I really wanted that. (All I’m going to say about the “consolation” prize and what myki won is that it has to do with an NFC East team, if you know what I mean.)

  167. cheepono December 8, 2008 2:24 pm

reading through the blog and am a little confused…
are you guys (ST and al) insinuating that nm is still a solid commit to the warriors? as well as gdl, it, kw, and ln?

  168. Jason December 8, 2008 2:25 pm

They have to do with an NFC East team, my mistake. myki didn’t win the big prize, but she won a smaller, still very nice prize. 😀

  169. homey December 8, 2008 2:25 pm

Stretch – #164, are you talking golf? Is the # 2 hole surrounded by bunkers? Does it have thick fringe? And about that flagpole…

  170. jojo ® December 8, 2008 2:27 pm

    Stretch – got email?

  171. homey December 8, 2008 2:28 pm

  179. Jason December 8, 2008 2:37 pm

chawan_cut: We want to show you some mercy. After all, it’s rough enough that Princess Leila and Dan Kelly both have that “What am I doing standing next to this guy?” look on their faces. 😉

  224. al December 8, 2008 4:02 pm

rob25….turn it off. it got ugly the last 5-7 minutes. they need to play smart, take care of the ball, play as a unit, quit monku monku, focus on defense, and play for each other.

    DUH!

  241. lava December 8, 2008 5:27 pm

I don’t think any ND opponent got respect for beating ND, so why would it be any different with UH? I don’t get the appeal of this game, aside from the obvious — a chance for the seniors to leave on a high note, and another chance to let recruits and the nation see good football is played out here when we are not all surfing.

    Intelligence. Force ratio. Improvization.

Maybe Coach Brian watch DMIL channel TV, Battleplan. think about that as he goes thru x’s an o’s. things always change from the script and thats when improv is a happening thing. and maybe da players become a little more focused for this one for all 4 quarters. no start celebrating or thinking too much until the last battle.

I sure like the Warriors play like they want to plan to win this one.

    Go Warriors

Thanks for your offer. I’m all set, though…Got my plane tix to go to Oahu 2 months ago and I got my Hawaii Bowl tix on Thanksgiving before they announced who the Warriors were playing. I was gonna go no matter who we were playing, but getting ND is pretty exciting. I’ll keep on eye out for you guys.

you wrong my bradda. anybody who beats Notre Dame get da respect of the masses. thats why people feel super good and grateful to play them. i would be supah happy if they signed us up for home and home and thats a fact of life for most programs in the country.”

But name a team that gained your respect this year because they beat ND. I can’t name one.

    Duffer,
howzit. gotcha. looking forward to seeing Whitey again.

    Lava,
howzit. Da Greeks from upstate NY. 😀 even wit da head coach going out da door, walking the plank, yada yada, he still had da class and the team had the class to win one for themselves. and it made their coach a winner to his crew and well wishers. I want that for us too. dats my story and i’m sticking to it.
besides, it matches my smile

  276. bighilofan2 December 8, 2008 8:37 pm

Over the years there have been plenty of big games against ND. For me the rirst one I recall was Michigan State in the mid 60s. Those were titanic games with Hawaii players. Then iat the beginning of the 70s had OJ and USC games with ND.

for sure TV thinks ND is a big deal. So its a big deal for me, cuz just maybe a super fast and gifted and intelligent young man may aspire to greatness and play for us. wouldn[‘t that be swell if he became enamored to UH Football because of this game.

maybe he loves Hawaii. 😆 whatever it takes….

Unless I’m mistaken Vili is not a mascot for UH but a paid peformer and will not be allowed on the sidelines

  282. las vegas December 8, 2008 9:07 pm

as popular as Vili may be, I think UH needs a real mascot volunteer from the student body.
we must be the only school paying a middle aged man to be our “mascot”
on top of that, isn’t UH athletics in the red?

This is a great idea–woman got the first new organ that was built out of her own stem cells. Because the organ is from her own stem cells, it matched her DNA and was not rejected by her body. Re: Vili.
He did indeed file a complaint.
And that’s when it got tricky.
The counter-claim was that it had to be decided if Vili is the school’s mascot or his own entity. If he’s the mascot, then his image belongs to UH, and thus ESPN can show him during promotional spots (through ESPN’s agreement with the WAC).
If he’s not the mascot, then he can ask ESPN to pay him for the promotional spot. HOWEVER, if he’s not a mascot, he’s not allowed to be on the field during bowl games, especially those owned by ESPN Regional Television. And, of course, they can chop him out of the promos.

  295. bighilofan2 December 8, 2008 9:30 pm

    Las Vegas, Kekoa,
you guyz are right on all three counts.
and the stadium security Wackeez are right to keep disorderz out or down…..
    BUTTTT…
dare is a limit to interpretation about what is disorderly. i seen da Wackeez tell 6-10 year old kids standing at da bottom, making adoring to da team, an security tellin da kids go away.

an getting back to Vili..yep, we should get a mascot. . we can get a MASCOT, but dat will take a while. meetings, drawings, popularity contests, meeting of the board of directors cuz its not a woman 😀 or not from Lanai 😀 or poor grades
😀 in other words, gonna take time, the process.
    BUTTTT
we only get 2 weeks. gotta put a skit togedda. plusk, fight Vili fo stadium spotlite. and and we only get 2 weeks. took 2 months plus lawyers to fight Sadowski and da odda guy.

so da only one who get da palapala and da pass and can EXPAND his show, cuz i see him exhorting da crowd wit his pushups on da field and him waving his arms to get da crowd amped . so to put a lil green guy into a big bag on national tv is Vili for the making.
and I hear you. he’s gonna have to imrpovize to get it done too.

Thats what I’m trying to tel Ron and Brian. Improvise! thiknk like that. Get it done. whatever it takes.
    ta daaaaaaah.

  296. Ralph December 8, 2008 9:30 pm

I concur with LV on #282….this topic was brought up by me a while back when I commented that UH can save money and help students by eliminating Vili’s personal contract and use a student tuition waiver for the mascot like we do with the rainbow dancers, cheerleaders and band members. I suggested a student from Hawaiian studies to help those who are vested in promoting Hawaiiana but my good friend BG got bent out of shape…why a hawaiian warrior, who said it got to be hawaiian, its warrior…but we are in Hawaii aren’t we…but like ST, I digress…Oh, I believe someone posted that Vili’s contract is purported to be in $60+ range.

  297. chawan_cut December 8, 2008 9:34 pm

ok, i updated my schedule of opponent’s schedules
    here’s the link:
    http://forum.sportshawaii.com/sh/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=26455&start=0

hope its not too big for some of your screens.
anyways, i added in all the bowls that our opponents are going to.
we have played 7 teams that are going to bowls.
i also compared the total combined record of all the teams from last year to the total for this year.
    (prior to bowls)
    2007 opponent’s records: 53-93

    2008 opponent’s records: 90-72

we had a really tough schedule this year. sure last year’s schedule was weak (thanks HF) but that had its pro’s and cons. this year was the complete opposite and it is reflected in those numbers.
    ok, enjoy, lame-o out.

  298. d1島 December 8, 2008 9:37 pm

  299. bighilofan2 December 8, 2008 9:39 pm

and just when i thought i had it all figured out, ST shows up.

so maybe we can’t have Vili throw a lil green guy into a big bag and haul him away

but if its planned properly, a entertainment moment can be created. one for ND. one for UH.

you guyz making me think 3 much, like the movie Fracture. pau fo nau.

  300. Ralph December 8, 2008 9:42 pm

I UH student dressed in Hawaiiana with a tuition waiver would cost about $6K and the band could provide the drumming, etc. save big bucks and we can have a mascot at the bowl games televised by ESPN..

  301. FloridaTed December 8, 2008 9:42 pm

I like Vili, but to me he doesn’t really look like a Hawaiian Warrior, more like an old Fidjian Cannibal. We should have a regal looking, real Hawaiian Warrior, authentic head gear, cape and war club, etc. on the sidelines.

Let’s class it up a little and make it really special.

  302. Ralph December 8, 2008 9:44 pm

BigHilo we can dress jm2375 as a menehune and she can chase the leprechaun with her water soaker- they are about the same size….

  303. Big mac December 8, 2008 9:45 pm

I think Vili is like Notre Dame. Every real college football fan either loves him or hates him. People like to watch Vili perform because you never know what he may do. People like to watch ND to see them win, or to see them get smashed like the USC game.

  304. bighilofan2 December 8, 2008 9:48 pm

I guess I’ll have to jump over the railing, onto da field, and wrap a lil green guy up myself.

i googles Leprechaun costomes and found out that for $40 plus S/H i can get a complete Green Guy outfit…. hmmmmm.

  305. bighilofan2 December 8, 2008 9:54 pm

    But that’s just my opinion.
Post above me said Vili is paid Sixty Thousand US Dollars per year.
60K a year? 5Gs a month? 31 bucks an hour (if he worked a 40 hour week) for a few games and a few promo appearances?

Nice quotes from UH recruit George Daily-Lyles in this article. Pete Carroll must have loved the opportunity to speak in front of the high school coaches and stay players who are playing for the California State title this week.

All eyes were on USC football coach Pete Carroll about noon Monday at the Rose Center. Carroll was the keynote speaker at the annual CIF-Southern Section banquet promoting this weekend’s high school championship games.

As Carroll stood on the dais, he talked about how terrific this should be for the hundreds of players who will be involved in the 13 divisional matchups.

Each of the 26 teams was represented by its head coach as well as a few players. The Poly High contingent included standout senior linebacker George Daily-Lyles. He said Carroll’s words had a familiar ring to them.

“It’s really inspirational and it’s really repetitive because our program is so strong and our coaches convey the same things he does up there when he was just speaking,” Daily-Lyles said.

The Jackrabbits (13-0) will play Tesoro (13-0) on Saturday in the Pac-5 Division championship game. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Angel Stadium.

“They (Poly coaches) just really preach that we should just be competitive at all points of the game, just go out there and give it our all,” said Daily-Lyles, who had 121 tackles prior to Friday’s semifinal victory over Lakewood.

  318. Garret December 8, 2008 10:30 pm

Vili did do an awesome job at the Warriors Rally event in New Orleans…he, Augie T, Willie K, etc. were awesome.

  319. Garret December 8, 2008 10:31 pm

But I do agree that a new mascot might save UH money and would be able to perform during the Hawaii Bowl–ESPN owns that bowl and UH will play there almost all of the time, so that is a nationally televised game where UH won’t have its mascot spreading its brand.

  320. Garret December 8, 2008 10:35 pm

According to Rivals, JJ is doing home visits all across Texas. I know that JJ did home visits during his first few years at UH…I wonder what happened to stop that. I know that the friction with a former Kahuku coach might have been part of it, but that wouldn’t stop JJ from doing home visits to St. Louis recruits and others.

I can understand JJ not doing home visits in the year or two after his accident, since he had physical limitations and extra time in therapy. But his last few years I don’t think it was his body stopping him…was his frustration with HF so bad that he had one foot out the door and stopped doing the home visits as part of it?

Anyway, I’m glad that Mac does home visits, camps, seminars for the coaches, etc. UH will get to another level in local recruiting because of that.

A thought for tomorrow (Actually my chance to post this before Garret):

On December 9, 1968, a group of engineers led by Douglas Engelbart crowded into an auditorium in San Francisco to show off a groundbreaking new system they’d designed for interacting with a computer. Moving beyond the cold realities of the keyboard (and even the punch card), Engelbart’s creation would open up a new world of computing from that day on. His invention: The mouse.

i know about that one ralph. it is the color, its just too faint for me.

  333. Ralph December 9, 2008 12:05 am

K State brought back coach Synder after 3 years of retirement to res erect its fb program…he named his first two coaches as assistant head coaches and co-defensive coordinators. Build with defense in the big 12….he is like JJ, he changed the fb logo and colors….royal purple with white to royal purple and silver….if he can recruit players to Manhattan, Kansas, we should be able to recruit to Hawaii. Kansas City, Denver and St. Louis are the nearest big cities and all are at least a minimum of 6+ hour drive for fun and big city life.

  334. tom December 9, 2008 1:03 am

If memory serves, it was JJ’s idea of Vili -the Warrior.

Wonder if the money, if it is coming from the football program, be better used in the recruiting arena.

No doubt he adds color to the game but perhaps the money should be used looking for bigger, faster, agile players.

Of course I was kinda fond of the Marshmellow Man – the one that looked sort of like Sponge Bob without the pukas, so what do I know?

Usually I’ll highlight the quoted stuff with Englebart’s groundbreaking system device. The high contrast makes it much easier to read.

    Good Morning All!

D-1 ~ We made the right call at the SSC office that morning!…My neighbor just asked me where she can get 4 tickets yesterday. She had tried to go on-line and there were none avail. I told her to go down to the stadium and ‘climb’ inside the ticket window screaming for tickets! That always works for me…

    Stretch,
You obviously have never gone to a Damien football game. You can hear it all the time. I believe when ND played in the bowl game here in ’84, the Damien band played for them during the game.

Oh yeah…good morning all. Continued prayers for the Curveball ohana

I thought they only play the song when they score?? why would Damien play the song??

    Hiya Tsaikos everywhere!

    Al,
thanks for the article on da Masch kid. I’m calling him Mr Mash. 😀

and he was quoted as saying UH fans were just crazy. 🙂 He prolly meant Tsychotic.

and I know what LV and Ralph mean about spending 60K on recruiting wars. I’d do the job for airline ticks to all the games. But you’re right, they’d be better off with the student.

anyway, we got Vili, like it or not. And he’s got a kid coming back, right? and he’s entertaining. i kinda getting used to him cuz he’s always around da tunnel where I sit.

and i must have watched the knute rockne movie a half dozen times
since i was a kid so i’m really looking forward to joining you tsaikos at the game and then mosey down to the tunnel with my bannah!

    Go Warriors.

    hiho esme out.

    Stretch…

    Oh no you didn’t….LMAO….

Actually, Damien’s fight song and alma mater are tied to ND’s since the religious orders of both schools have ties. And djmitcho is right. When ND played Washington (I believe) in the old Aloha Bowl, they asked DMHS’ band to play since they weren’t bringing their band.

  353. Stretch December 9, 2008 8:51 am

hmmm…. opening line shows Hawaii as 1-1/2 pt favorites against ND. Teams are considered equal and the difference is the home field advantage
