Kailua defensive end commits to UH

Kailua High defensive end Calen Friel has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors.
Friel is 6 feet 2 and 240 pounds.
“I was a Warrior fan since I was a little kid,” said Friel, who participated in the recently completed UH Big Man’s Camp for offensive and defensive linemen.

Greg McMackin, June Jones, Jesse Sapolu, Samson Satele, Ma‘a Tanuvasa, Ta‘ase Faumui and Jack “The Throwin’ Samoan” are part of the group taking part in the American Samoa Football Academy & Medical Mission.
They departed this afternoon for American Samoa, bringing 83 boxes of medical supplies valued at about $400,000. They also brought five wheelchairs.

Here are two thirds of the 1992 Holiday Bowl championship defensive line — Tanuvasa and Faumui:

Lefoti said he is 6 feet 4 and 295 pounds.
Fonokalafi said he is 6 feet and 290 pounds, and can play defensive tackle or defensive end.
Both attended the Big Man’s Camp, which ended yesterday.

290 pounds sounds more like a DT than a DE in Mac’s defense.

Is it Lefoti or Lefotu? Does he project as a G or T?

  5. al ™ June 25, 2009 12:22 am

while i heard about that olineman i didn’t about that dlineman. i’ll bet that dlineman is a neighbor.

It is great for UH to have a Big Man’s Camp, where everyone can be compared side-to-side and compete for scholarship offers. I’m sure that the coaches carefully chose who to offer, so it is great to hear that two offers were accepted right away.

  7. Ralph June 25, 2009 12:25 am

the Kaimuki player fits in the mold of UH DT, short and powerful, plug the hole and hold the line….i’d like a dt who can move the line and make more tackles and qb hurries…

    Stephen,
Is Viliami Fonokalafi related to the Vili Fonokalafi who was an AllState DL for Kailua in 2002? I wonder if that Vili is the same guy who is a professional MMA fighter, now?

I assume he is the older brother to Kaimuki’s Lopeti Fonokalafi who was the first civilian born in 1994.

    Hi Everyone!!

Stadium Authority meeting in about eight hours. Stuff on the agenda includes repairs and revenue-sharing. I’ll take good notes in case anyone is interested in a brief report.

Asked this question once before but no one responded. Is anyone interested in putting together a miniature golf challenge on July 4? Or even just to play a round or two?

Back to work – have to get ready for a 3 am meet-up call. For everyone else, it’s a 9 am call because they’re all in DC.

  21. BigWave96744 June 25, 2009 1:40 am

    Ralph,

lots of tickets available to the UH-WSU game at qwest field…not available thru UH, but when the tickets are made available expect to pay a $50 surcharge per ticket purchase. maybe a purchaser will be able to pick up 4 tickets for the $50 surcharge, no decision announced yet as being final…cheaper to buy it directly from the cougars…tough decision for the die hard fans, support the warriors and pay the $50 surcharge or save it for the casinos

  25. Ralph June 25, 2009 3:38 am

Coach Dana announces that she will coach the post players…. 🙁 a former 5’3 guard coaching dew at 6’3 the proper mechanics of playing the post, not…. all three coaches played the 1 and 2 slots..Serenda is the tallest of the three so she could have played the 2 at Cal Poly if the team was height challenged…

  39. koakane™ June 25, 2009 6:42 am

ralph commented on same (#24) last week when I found out it would be cheaper to buy tics on line instead of waiting for UH to get notice out. ticket masters has tics on 40 yrd line behind UH bench going for $50 and odd change which includes all fees. how yu figga? called the UH twice but only the comments they could make was to say information would come out soon…..still nothing but they did emphasize the $50 reservation priority fee. it seems the only way to get game tickets is to purchase the UH travel package. again in times of economic hardship UH does not seem to care about improving its situation or endearing itself to loyal fans.

  40. koakane™ June 25, 2009 6:53 am

e kala mai and a very good morning to all the tsai-ko’s. It gets my blood 👿 boiling when I think of the many ways we try to support UH but they do not seem to respond back.

mr. stephen if you smud me I understand and my apologies if you get in hot water for this. 😳

sad to hear 🙁 about the passing of ms. Fawcet. she was one hot chick back den.

the big man camp seems to be producing some outstanding prospects for the UH future. welcome to those who have been pegged so far. looking forward to seeing how you develop into supper warriors.

  41. wafan June 25, 2009 7:01 am

Truthfully, WSU is not helping the situation at all. They should have announced the start time by now. I think they are holding out on a TV contract and will adjust the start time accordingly.

But, UH should have the sales already going. Or at least have a list for people who want to purchase the tickets.

What is most frustrating is that we are trying to support the UH but they are moving so slowly, if at all, that we may be forced to purchase the tickets from WSU (without the additional fees) at a lower price than what we would have to pay the UH.

When you are the only game in town maybe the “Hawaiian Style” works but with other venues involved (who have their act together) there is no time and definitely no excuse.

I guess the UH people have not learned anything from the Sugar Bowl and other away game fiascos.

  42. lava June 25, 2009 7:04 am

Big news on the 2 latest recruits. Coach Mac did say he offered more guys, but I think some of the guys aren’t ready to commit yet. The guys that have given their verbal commitments so far all seem to have their heart set on playing for the home team. I would think that feeling would be contagious.

  47. wafan June 25, 2009 7:22 am

For those Tsai-ko’s coming up for the WSU game in September. Just a reminder — the game is off campus, not quite on the edge of downtown Seattle. The venue is a professional sports complex (Qwest and Safeco Fields are across the street from each other) with bars the predominant businesses.

Finding restaurants closeby to Qwest Field is difficult at best — especially if you are looking for inexpensive, quality and quantity. The Seattle restaurants tend to be upscale.

If you are coming please refer to the messages sent earlier in the year. Lots of touristy things to do, though!

You can actually ride a ferry that works and no one prostested against, watch the flying fish, visit Underground Seattle, shop ’til you drop, visit Paradise on the Mountain (Rainier), take a day trip to Victoria (bring your passport or birth certificate), and ton of other things. The weather should be pleasant in the 80’s.

  48. Maverick June 25, 2009 7:27 am

    This latest commit(s) are HUGE.
No pun intended towards their talent and size.

  49. Sinope June 25, 2009 7:31 am

WAFAN: I think now days you have to have a passport for Canada. Some latest TSA requirement.

  50. Maverick June 25, 2009 7:32 am

Heard from a friend in Glenwood Springs recently…
and he mentioned that Bennett Nicola ,the guy that recently commited to UH who is 6 feet 2 and 165, a 2009 graduate of Colorado’s Glenwood Springs,
….is very FAST and GREAT hands, as he played in the State championship game.

  51. chawan_cut June 25, 2009 7:43 am

i second what wafan has to say.
might be difficult to “tailgate” before the game in Seattle. its not a tailgating venue. the stadium is right on the edge of downtown. not much open air parking except for small Diamond parking like lots scattered in between the buildings. there’s a big parking structure but that’s not ideal either.
it not being a Seahawk game too, not sure how many of the local sports bars around the stadium would be open too.
it also doesn’t help the time hasn’t been determined. but to my recollection, most PAC-10 games are during the afternoon into evenings. the sun goes down super late too, so that might factor in.

  52. Kekoa (iPhone) June 25, 2009 7:44 am

    ST ~

Please ask the ticket office mgr to appear on the Warrior Beat show. (Make sure you allow the show time to go into extra innings).

Suggested show title, ‘Reader’s Revenge’…and have Paramedics standing by.

Audience participation should include the A-House Ohana at the top of the list. Stretch & BHF2 for sure. (I would never get past security, so I defer to my pahtna, KK).

  53. Stephen Tsai June 25, 2009 7:54 am

From what I’ve heard, UH has been told there won’t be a ticket limit for Warrior fans for any road games this year. Basically, if you go through UH (or Panda, I assume), you’re going to get a ticket in section designated for the visiting team. I have no idea what that means, or where the seats will be.

  54. wafan June 25, 2009 7:55 am

    Koakane and Kekoa . . .

    Will do!

  55. Stephen Tsai June 25, 2009 7:56 am

I guess what I’m trying to say is I would make the travel reservations but not worry about the ticket. This isn’t a Sugar Bowl situation.

  56. wafan June 25, 2009 8:01 am

    Mr. Tsai . . .

Great! A seat sold at usury prices. Bwah-ha-ha-ha!

At least it is a step in the right direction. With 60,000+ seats at Qwest Field there should be lots of seats available. I sure hope there are a lot of Warrior fans in the seats that day! It would be a nice away home game akin to the UNLV game.

  57. July Jones June 25, 2009 8:05 am

    RE: #105
Poor Kid. The very fist Camellia cattle call, Al, DPK, and I shared a grill. I cooked bbq pork on my 1/3 of the grill while Al tended to his 1/2. The Kid had the rest. I noticed two things that day– (1) Kid looks up from the grill at you when you speak to him and (2) Al is Zatoichi-fast with his chopsticks, especially when the Kid was cooking the same stuff. That’s why Al is holding a pair of chopsticks in the Tsai-ko group caricature.

Even then, Bulla had his own grill while Wreck and Addahknowjoe waited patiently–the look of sheer glee on Bulla’s face while cooking indicated it might be dangerous to interrupt him. Even today, that’s the only time he makes me nervous. 😐

interesting that our early recruits our mostly those under the radar types.

It’s seems like the Warrior staffs a climbing a slippery slope if they think these under-the-radar-types, or sleepers, or diamonds in the rough are going to prove themselves. At least when Coach Jones was here you’d see a lot of player’s bios with all-league or all-state designates..now we have sleepers..yawn.

    Agree wicchu…

Trust the coaches decisions because they are the ones seeing the kids at the camp and have prolly talked to the HS coaches.

    hoho,
when the Former Coach was here the recruiting was focused on HS Seniors who were more likely to have been recognized with All-Star/All-State accolades than Juniors.
btw, the thought is that the calamity is in going down a slippery slope. But with so many others going along the same path nowadays, the path may not be so slippery but well-worn instead.

  154. al June 25, 2009 11:39 am

actually, in the case of lefotu, he had some big time schools knocking on his door already.

i am not saying these are unproven talents that we have secured verbals from. what i meant by that is that the staff is doing there homework, pounding the pavement, and making their critical observations by holding camps, etc.

it is supposed to be our advantage to know all of the local kids with d-1 potential. isn’t that our advantage being on an island state?

yah, i too trust the coaches evaluations.

It is hard for me to believe that a D-IA school, with the #4 ranked cheerleading squad in the country, has cut their cheerleading team. Budget problems also forced them to cut their band. I hope that the budget situation never gets to this point for UH.

Currently ranked fourth in the country, Florida International University’s cheerleading squad has often enjoyed more success than the football and basketball teams it roots for year in and year out.

But when FIU’s fledgling football team takes the field this fall, the pompoms and pyramids will be conspicuously absent.

In a year when public universities statewide are slashing academic programs and laying off employees, FIU’s cheerleading team is the latest to get the ax.

The decision follows FIU’s recent move to eliminate its marching band — also a fixture at football games.

  209. Colomaohana June 25, 2009 1:16 pm

    *ahem*

  210. GRM June 25, 2009 1:17 pm

Today is Peryy & Price’s Happy LEON Day. There are already two great names that won’t see Christmas – Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson. May they RIP.

  211. Garret June 25, 2009 1:18 pm

FIU’s Administration really went about this the wrong way…after recruting was done for the squad and ignoring an offer to try to keep their cheerleading squad going for free.

This year, state funding for public universities dropped significantly as state lawmakers in Tallahassee coped with a third consecutive year of shrinking tax revenues. To close a nearly $35 million budget gap, FIU increased tuition 15 percent, imposed staff layoffs and eliminated some sparsely attended degree programs.

Doing without a cheerleading squad will save FIU an estimated $45,000 annually. FIU’s cheerleading coach, however, protested the way university administrators handled the decision. For one, FIU just recently finished recruiting this year’s squad — which required extensive tryouts and interviews.

Coach Maria George — a former Miami Dolphins cheerleader — also questioned why FIU administrators hadn’t responded to her offer to work for free and to finance the cheerleading team through private sponsorships and donations.

Article about the QB situation in Washington.

The real quarterback controversy during training camp will be the one going on behind Campbell.

The Redskins drafted Colt Brennan last year and he quickly gained the type of backup quarterback adoration that is accorded most No. 2s — and Washington is no different.

Brennan undeniably has the type of moxie you want from a quarterback. His confidence teeters on the line of cockiness, a line many successful pro athletes toe, he commands the huddle and his play on the field is creative and, at least in the preseason, pretty effective. Still, he has a ways to go before he’s ready to step in as a day-to-day starter in the NFL.

The Redskins coaching staff continues to work with Brennan on his sidearm release and the technical aspects of his game, and Brennan said during OTAs that he’s learning to find a balance between when he falls back on what has brought him success in the past and what the ideal would be for the coaches.

Entering training camp, Brennan knows he has a shot at the No. 2 spot behind Campbell. But in order to win the job, he’ll have to beat out Todd Collins, a savvy veteran who led the Redskins to the playoffs two seasons ago after stepping in for an injured Campbell.

If Brennan were to beat Collins out for the job, however, it’d be difficult to see the Redskins keeping a third-string quarterback with a $3 million per year price tag.

    Enter Chase Daniel.

Feature article on the American Samoa Football Academy and Medical Mission sponsored by JJ’s Foundation. Mac, Tony Tuioti, Stutz1, and others with UH ties will be there.

The Football Academy will be led by Southern Methodist University Head Football Coach June Jones and several past and present NFL players of Samoan descent including San Francisco 49er great Jesse Sapolu, the “Throwin Samoan” Jack Thompson and legendary Pro Bowler Junior Seau.

The Academy is a free two-day clinic for all American Samoa children and football coaches. Last year, the inaugural Academy drew over 600 participants.

For the second consecutive year, five $2,000 collegiate scholarships will be awarded based on the recommendations and criteria established by the American Samoan Department of Education.

Ellie Taft (wife of SMU Assistant Football Coach Jeff Reinebold), a health care professional, will once again lead the Medical Mission, which will bring certified nurses and doctors representing more than 90 years experience in emergency medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics and more than 40 years of expert training.

This article indicates that the Samoa Football Academy and Medical Mission is expected to be much bigger this year than last year. There were about 600 players estimated last year, so 1,000 would be a significant increase.

The Academy is sponsored by the June Jones Foundation and provides a free two-day clinic for all American Samoa high school junior varsity and varsity football players and their coaches. Nearly 1,000 players are expected to attend this year’s Academy, doubling the number of participants from last year. The Academy and Medical Mission also will provide $250,000 in medical supplies, up from $150,000 last year, as well as $50,000 in football equipment and attire, five $2,000 scholarships to U.S. colleges and several hundred pairs of football cleats.

**GAME TIME IS POSTED AS 1PM**

This is the usual start times for college games in the area.

Tickets are available on TicketMaster. Additional fees range from ~$11 to ~$15 per ticket plus the price of the ticket.

Tickets on StubHub start at $50 per ticket. Not all of the seats are together.

    http://picasaweb.google.com/chawancut/Qwest#
ok, as promised, here’s my pics from QWest field the last 2 times i went. there’s not much parking for tailgating. i did chance upon a spot between the ferry terminal walking to the stadium. its near the freeway overpasses. its very unlikely we’ll get those stalls as you probably have to get there early. that and there’s no way we’ll be able to tailgate normally with grills, tents, chairs, etc. i’m sure the wazzu fans know all about these lots too.

next to the stadium is an alleyway where a lot of food vendors set up. they allowed us to take food into the stadium. you just couldn’t take any drinks in though. not sure if this’ll be the case for a college game but they’re also there for a Mariners game.

anyways, i sat in two different areas when i went. the endzone and the upper deck. i actually had a standing room only spot last year because i bought a few days before the game. it was also against the packers and the cheesehead fans are crazy and filled up the stadium.

i did somehow get to the luxury box area in the south endzone. really nice. maybe stretch can sponsor us.

the rest of the pics are self explanatory.
    enjoy!

The $10 per ticket fee UH is tacking on to road game tickets is exactly what they did last year.

And, also like last year, some road games are outrageously priced. $45 for the SJSU game? Aren’t most of the seats at Spartan Stadium general admission?

  280. wafan June 25, 2009 3:43 pm

c_c and anyone else coming to the WSU game . . .

You can usually take food and water (no coolers) into the stadium. No alcohol can be taken in. For that matter, since it is a college game (PAC-10) I am not sure beer will be sold inside.

But, as we learned at the OSU game, during halftime the kids all ran outside to the parking lots, hit the bottles then re-entered the stadium. So much for alcohol free. Bwah-ha-ha-ha!

MADEINHAWAII: Sorry, should have been more precise in my comment but …

“Notes above the $100 denomination ceased being printed in 1946 and were officially withdrawn from circulation in 1969. These notes were used primarily in inter-bank transactions or by organized crime; it was the latter usage that prompted President Richard Nixon to issue an executive order in 1969 halting their use. With the advent of electronic banking, they became less necessary. Notes in denominations of $500, $1,000, $5,000, $10,000, and $100,000 were all produced at one time”

While large bills may technically be around, it you can’t use them …

I must be one of the few people who feels indifferent about Michael Jackson’s death. It’s unfortunate that he passed away, but I never really evoked above-normal emotions for both him or his music. On that note, I rarely listened to his music nor did I grow up during the height of his fame. For me, the only memorable things of MJ was the scandals.

I guess my overall perception of his passing is quite different compared to the rest of the Tsaiko gang…..not that there’ s anything wrong with any of our views. If I was around during the height of his fame, I’d probably feel saddened as well of his death.

For me, this was sorta like when Anna Nicole Smith died…..and no, I’m not the father of her baby.

To me, MJ was someone who was prevented from possibly doing more good with all the scandals and battles he had to endure. With Lionel Ritchie, the two composed “We are the World” and managed to raise 50 million to fight poverty in Africa. That’s 50 million nearly 20 years ago.. how much is that in dollars today? I was looking forward to seeing him perform one last hurrah. Too bad.

I hope Coach Mack can find samoa big boys from Samoa. Nice to see how this recruiting class is starting to take shape. I don’t think any of these guys have been flying under the radar because almost all have other offers as well. Just because they come from schools not really known for there football like the Kahuku, St. Louis types, doesn’t mean they’re not ballers and haven’t been noticed. Anyway, the anticipation for the season to get going is starting to build up…

Of how I remember Michael Jackson is that he is gifted in a lot of areas of his life, yet he is also dwarfed. His prowess for song and dance is unmatched. Yet in the end the impediment that incapacitated him, probably, was the years of abusing prescription pain killers. Seeing, also, that he had an early history of being abused as a child and combined with the chemicals would only intensify this calamity. The imaginary voices one hears in their heads under these duresses are hard to overcome. And Michael was no different. His passing mirrors someones that I’m familiar with that fought a losing battle with painkillers, specifically OxyContin. And, too, that person, like MJ, spiraled into poorer health and weirdness. And death. This is extremely sad.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if MJ autopsy reports to this effect.

Wf2 posted a link that I watched: Michael Jackson – Billie Jean (Live in New York 2001). For me watching this video was a poignant moment. I’m not ashamed to say I had a few tears, well quite a few. And if there was reason to have a personal song and video for a personal reason forever immortalized in my head–this one is it. I’m honored to pay homage to Michael Jackson.

  321. BG June 25, 2009 8:12 pm

No one is perfect…no coach is perfect…right? But, I can see why Coach Mac is lauded for his recruiting. It feels like we were in the Dark Ages and have emerged into the 21st century. By spot-lighting prospects early, we will probably lose a few to other schools. However, I think we’ll keep more local talent because more are being identified and offered. [[applause]]

Continuation from last night’s problem with copying the Wash/Wahine VB game to dvd’s…….

I called KFIVE this afternoon and left a voicemail for John Fink. Didn’t get a call back. I’m sure he’s a busy guy, but I was disappointed. I really wanted to get a non copy-protected dvd from them. But, I also know that they may not have one. When I first started to send dvd’s to Iraq, I had to pick up the tapes at KFIVE and take them to a multi-media company to have dvd’s made. That was too much trouble since I was really busy on active duty at Schofield. Eventually, I just bought the recorder and started making my own dvd’s…with the proper authorization from the UH Athletic Director and KFIVE.

Let me stop this long story and get to the point….is there anyone who has the original broadcast of the game on dvd? That should be the easier way to make copies quckly for Rob25 to send overseas. If you do and are willing to share, please drop me an email at tsaiko808 at yahoo com….please help!

ANYONE UP FOR PRIVATE WATERFRONT SEATS IN DOWNTOWN HONOLULU FOR THE FIREWORKS ON FRIDAY, JULY 3?

In addition to its first fund-raiser this Tuesday, the Friends of Falls of Clyde will be holding a potluck bbq and fireworks viewing on Friday, July 3 on land next to the ship. People will start to gather around 5 pm and eat starting around 6:30 or so. The fireworks show sponsored by the Aloha Tower Marketplace will start shortly after 8:30 pm.

Parking and other info about what to bring will be out within the next day or two which I can then pass on to anyone who’s interested. I don’t want to post it here so please send me an e-mail to swood at hokudotcom. NOTE: This is a family-oriented function although people are welcome to bring beer or wine.

Unfortunately, the fireworks show in Kailua the next day will not be visible from BayView Golf Course because the ridge separating Kailua from Kane`ohe will block it.

    Good evening Tsai-kos!!

RIP Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett.
Back in the early 70s, it was the Jackson 5 and the Osmond Bros. Late 70s and early 80s, it was Off the Wall, Thriller and the Motown 25th anniversary special.

Took the keed and her friend to see “Year One” tonight. It was good, but I think “Tropic Thunder” was better. Regal has raised their concession prices to the outrageous level. $5.25 for a small soda? 😈 ❗

Had a nice lunch today with the Tsai-ko cruisers. Got to meet Tom Mui and lakesidegt.

Updates on two Long Beach Jordan recruits that UH has offered.

John Timu, Jordan’s starting quarterback and last year’s Moore League Player of the Year, has had Pac-10 attention and scout.com reports he’s been offered by Hawaii and Oregon already, before his senior year.

And we got an email yesterday from Panthers coach Scott Meyer with the great news that Princeton Fuimaono, a first-team all-league linebacker for the Panthers last season, is also getting good looks, and has been offered by the University of Washington, Hawaii, and San Jose State.

Of course, both players are likely to get a lot more looks by the end of the season—especially with the number of high-profile games the Panthers have scheduled. Their non-league games are against Bishop Amat (on the road), Beverly Hills (on the road), Pasadena, Dominguez, and Oaks Christian (again, on the road). That’s easily the toughest schedule Jordan’s had in recent memory, and should give Timu, Fuimaono, and the rest of the Panthers plenty of opportunity to improve their collegiate stock.
