Top Vegas linebacker commits to UH

A highly regarded linebacker from Las Vegas has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors.
T.J. Alofipo gave his verbal commitment this morning.
“That’s where I want to be,” Alofipo told The Advertiser.
He is rated as Nevada’s top linebacker, and the state’s fourth-best player overall.  Alofipo is 6 feet 2 and 235 pounds.
He said he has been timed at 4.7 seconds over 40 yards. He can dunk a basketball.
Last season, Alofipo made 66 tackles, including 11.5 for sacks.
Although he played strongside linebacker, he also projects as a middle linebacker and defensive end.
He also received scholarship offers from Arizona, Fresno State, Colorado State, Brigham Young and UNLV.

Here’s his highlight video (with the link courtesy of Tombo Ahi):

The players are supposed to be tapering this week in preparation for the weekend’s start of training camp. But defensive end John Fonoti and slotback Aaron Bain have not slowed down. Both have continued to participate in running and weightlifting sessions. Not surprisingly both will go on scholarship this weekend.

Here’s Bain trying to defend his girlfriend, UH soccer player Kristen Oshiro.

Bain then set up the JUGS, an electronic football-throwing machine.

Here’s the new-look Daniel Otineru, who underwent jaw surgery to correct sleep apnea. Otineru, who won’t be medically cleared until November, has received a medical hardship for this season.

Don’t forget Heather McMackin’s football clinic for women is set for Aug. 19 in the Stan Sheriff Center. (It was moved from Aug. 21 because of the Pigskin Pigout.) The clinic is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Each attendee will receive a “playbook” of terms, diagrams and talking points. Light refreshments will be served. The fee is $10. For information, call 956-6508 or e-mail: football@hawaii.edu.

Here’s a picture of Caryn Kunz and her fiance, Washington State football player Vaughn Lesuma. Not to worry Warrior fans: Kunz’s family is backing UH. Vaughn leaves Saturday for Pullman. The Cougars open training camp on Monday.

Yea Bain and Yea bhf2- for the functional JUGS machines!

Stephen, I really liked the article on Bain and am glad to see the pix!

Except for totally writing off Colt as meaningless to the Redskins, here is a good primer for the rest of the team:

paradigm shift…TOURISM affects everyone of us, don’t fool yourselves for a minute, the trickle down, the ripple, the you name it effect, will hit all of our families.

A few years ago, a UH quarterback was considering a move to defensive back. Natasha Kai decided to work out with the fellas during unsupervised drills. On a lark, she lined up as a receiver, defended by the quarterback. She zipped by him a couple of times. The quarterback decided to remain a quarterback.

“Warriors rebuild offense for title defense
    By Dustin Lapray
    Correspondent
Imagine finishing the regular season undefeated, winning the Western Athletic Conference crown, going to the Sugar Bowl and then getting picked to finish fourth in the WAC a year later.

You can’t invent that type of bulletin board fodder.”
    http://www.magicvalley.com/articles/2008/07/31/sports/local_state/141458.txt

I was like, what is magic valley???? and why does this come up on a Google for Colt???

    Idaho. Aha.

bulla- Jordon has his hands full as a Lion, and yes, very proud indeed! Unlike Colt’s situation where hes is seen as a project, Jordon is EXPECTED to run and deliver right out of the starting gate this season. (Plus I don’t feel that he is his normal self because of his antics just before the draft and the unko karma of keeping it quiet… dunno if he’s being advised by others but something is different…)

He even got slammed for practicing in realtime instead of running the prepared patterns

“— Rookie linebacker Jordon Dizon crushed Artose Pinner and bowled him over with a bullrush move. “I’d be thrilled if he did that in a game, but that’s not really what we’re working on,” said defensive coordinator Joe Barry. The one-on-one drill is designed for linebackers to work on pass-rush moves — like a club-and-rip or spin — not to bullrush. The drill is also designed for backs to keep their feet moving side to side to combat the pass-rush moves.”

    http://uhfootball.blogspot.com/2008/07/waimalu-town-hall-meeting-with-jd-gm.html

and no, i don’t even compare to ST, MT, PL or any HA reporter in writing. i don’t know how they do it. i found i was boring myself with my own writing. hope it didn’t put you guys to sleep.
it turned out kinda long because i took a full 8.5 sheet of paper (both sides) of notes, and i filled in the gaps with whatever i could remember.

  19. Stephen Tsai July 31, 2008 7:39 am

    Maverick:
The higher-ups are always tinkering, which makes it difficult to find things.
We had a fairly good Web site. Then the higher-ups decided to go with the system-wide design, which also is why we got rid of the “red” that has been associated with our paper. Since then, they keep trying to find designs that fit the readers’ wants. It’s pretty simple, I imagine. Put the interesting stories at the top. But, hey, it’s like a car that never breaks down. If one is invented, a lot of higher-ups would need new things to do.

good to see bain and fonoti being put on schollies. kinda anxious to see what da slots, mw, ab, and kp have got. regarding fonoti and veikune, our d was successful last year cuz these guyz provided the depth. who will be their backups this year? no one w/ experience probably, but we got any players at the d-end position? 30 days til da swamp, gonna fly by.

huge national news day 2day, bball trade deadline, favre deadline maybe. did i read right, da pack’s actually considering moving him within the division?? yikes for any GB fans. have a good day y’all

    chawan_cut,

Thank you for your excellent report! I loved all of the details you were able to include.

  23. Garret July 31, 2008 8:00 am

Nice that they are honoring our troops at the UH-Oregon State game.

Oregon State University’s home football opener against Hawaii on Sept. 13 has been designated Military Day at Reser Stadium.

The university is offering special $21 tickets for military members showing identification with a four-ticket maximum.

Advance tickets are available at the OSU ticket office in Gill Coliseum or by calling (800) 462-3287.

  24. Garret July 31, 2008 8:02 am

Colt wasn’t the only QB who gave up a lot of money to come back for his senior year. Brohm lost a ton of money…and their team didn’t do nearly as well as UH last season, so he doesn’t get a rewarding season like Colt to look back on.

Now that training camps have started and contracts have been signed, we know how much the losses to Kentucky, Syracuse and others cost Brohm — an insane amount of cash. We know that in addition to giving his knee, thumb and shoulder to U of L, Brohm also gave a king-sized chunk of his initial contract.

We know how much money he sacrificed because the Cardinals sagged from a preseason top-20 team to one that lost half of its 12 games and was ignored at bowl time.

Minimum loss to Brohm: $7 million.

    Worst-case loss: $33 million.

That’s worse than the hits Brohm took his senior season.

Remember: If you can really play quarterback, you will get paid. Brohm will simply have to do more to earn his cash.

Look at the NFL’s top 10 leaders in passing yards last season. Only three — Carson Palmer, Peyton Manning and Jay Cutler — were former first-round picks. Two of them, like Brohm, heard their names called in Round 2. And one was Brett Favre, the guy the Packers are pushing out of town to make room for Aaron Rodgers, Brohm and Matt Flynn.

  25. Garret July 31, 2008 8:04 am

Another check of the Miami papers to see if anything new came out since late last night…

Rookie quarterback Chad Henne had perhaps his best practice of camp, hitting Derek Hagan for a big play and also connecting with rookie Davone Bess.

  26. Garret July 31, 2008 8:06 am

I think this is good for both Samson and Bess.

The offensive line was opening up what appeared to be huge holes in the afternoon sessions, and the tailbacks got into the second tier of the secondary a couple of times…. WR Davone Bess is effective at slipping into soft spots of the Dolphins’ zone to make clutch catches.

  27. da princess' classmate July 31, 2008 8:08 am

oh and thanx for da excellent report C_C

  28. Garret July 31, 2008 8:08 am

Another note about Bess. I think that this was against the *first-team* D, as Henne was against the 2nd-team D and Beck was against the 3rd team D.

McCown owes WR Davone Bess for the 20-plus yard pass he caught over CB Joey Thomas, and a few short receptions from RB Ricky Williams for getting his unit in position for Jay Feely to kick a 46-yard field goal before time expired.

  29. Mouthwash July 31, 2008 8:08 am

  30. Garret July 31, 2008 8:09 am

Update on the Reggie Bush court proceedings.

A San Diego judge will decide Friday whether details of a civil suit involving former USC star Reggie Bush will remain private, which would make it more difficult for the NCAA to punish the school.

Judge Joan A. Lewis will hear a motion from Bush’s attorneys that the case should be settled through arbitration — superseding a scheduled March 2009 trial that could give the NCAA ammunition to go after USC and even take away Bush’s 2005 Heisman Trophy. Bush, who is participating in training camp for the New Orleans Saints, is not planning to attend the hearing, said his attorney, David Cornwell.

Sanctions of some sort are likely if the NCAA determines Bush received improper benefits from would-be sports marketers Lloyd Lake and Michael Michaels. Bush has settled with Michaels, and that settlement “has a mandatory arbitration agreement in it” that also would apply to Lake, Cornwell said.

Lake is suing Bush for approximately $300,000 – money Lake alleges he gave to Bush and his family while Bush was a student at USC.

Lake’s attorney, Brian Watkins, said Bush and his family are seeking arbitration “because they don’t want anyone to know they took the money and what the terms of their paying the money back are.”

Regarding Bush skipping the hearing, Watkins said: “He’s got to prove his case. It’s going to be hard without his testimony.”

Good morning/afternoon, Tsaiko Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Good story on Bain, I’m happy for him. Just goes to show you, winners are all alike, they all keep fighting against any odds until the goal is reached, willing to pay the price for success. Many of us don’t reach our goals, because we are not willing to pay the price and anything worthwhile in life always has a price tag attached.

    chawan_cut,

Many thanks for your great report. It is especially appreciated by us Mainlanders, myself in particular. From 5,000 miles you brought us close to home, much mahalo.

I like the whole attitude from the program leaders that clearly came through, we will be great this year, regardless what any clueless pundit proclaimes in their little articles, comprised of old knowledge, assumptions and guess work, we all know better.

I even bought a frozen bag of edamame to keep the ice cream bars I was going to buy at the snack bar but when I went to get the ice cream bars the worker told me they ran out of the chocolate dip and the nuts. Now I have a fricken 5# bag of edamame in the freezer.

Though NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is waiting at least one more day to reinstate Brett Favre, neither that extra time nor a $20 million offer from the team to stay retired will resolve the Green Bay Packers’ impasse with their record-setting quarterback or prevent him from reporting to training camp.

Amazing to read the details of how recruiting budgets are increasing significantly. To most schools, it is the “cost of doing business”…I’m glad that UH had JD now instead of HF to set the recruiting budget. Even D-IAA recruiting budgets are increasing rapidly!

Forty-eight percent of NCAA Division I athletics departments at least doubled their recruiting budgets from 1997 to 2007, according to a Chronicle analysis of financial data reported to the U.S. Department of Education. Of the 300 Division I institutions for which data were available, 21 each spent more than $1-million chasing talented players in the 2007 academic year.

On the whole, the 65 biggest spenders shelled out a total of more than $61-million in 2007, an 86-percent increase from 10 years before. That amount does not include salaries for recruiting coordinators or construction and operating costs of the gleaming multimillion-dollar facilities that help lure prospects.

Institutions in the six most competitive conferences, and in Division I-A more broadly, spend by far the most on recruiting. But expenses grew even more significantly at Division I-AA and I-AAA institutions, which are a competitive notch below Division I-A and historically have tended to recruit more regionally.

Among the 65 biggest football programs — the nation’s largest spenders — the University of Maryland at College Park showed the greatest percentage change in its recruiting budget. In the 1997 academic year, it spent $242,000 on recruiting. Ten years later, it spent $912,100.

    All times eastern

6:01 p.m. — Believe it or not, not all members of the sports media are in great shape. Including yours truly. But I just walked by a couple of reporters who are going to seriously struggle to finish this nine. They are stopping for breaks! It’s only funny until there’s a health issue, so for now, it’s funny.

Michelle hit a great approach on this hole, but her birdie putt slides by. She’s still 1 over after four holes, and eight shots behind clubhouse leader Jeff Overton, who posted a 65.

5:49 p.m. — The size of the security detail has gone up to five. The crowd is starting to show signs of fatigue from all the hills on this course. But they still scramble to get a view everytime she approaches. I have a new appreciation for her ability to grow the game. Tons of young girls are in the crowd. They will remember this forever.

Can’t ask for much more so far with this recruiting class. The #1 LB in Nevada, the top passer in California, the best WR in Hawaii (Class of 2009, I think Taz is slightly better overall), and one of the best athletes in the state (Makaula). Not a bad first 4 to get started with.

Great job by the UH staff!

  128. Garret July 31, 2008 12:20 pm

This site picked the top up-and-coming players on D and a Florida DT made the list, with 2 other Florida DL making honorable mention. These guys will be great motivation for the UH OL, probably the best test they will get all season!

    DT: Torrey Davis Florida
Along with Dunlap, Justin Trattou and John Brown, Davis was one of the gems of Florida’s absurdly rich defensive line class last year, and though Trattou played the most of that quartet, Davis got on the field enough to drag down a couple quarterbacks (including Chad Henne in the bowl game) and has the higher ceiling. The only way he doesn’t break out if healthy is if fellow VHTs Brown, Trattou, Javier Estopinan or incoming Omar Hunter and/or Troy Epps also force their way onto the field. You can’t double team them all.

  129. d1島: July 31, 2008 12:21 pm

  135. Eagle July 31, 2008 12:32 pm

Obviously he’s not the top QB, but stat-wise he’s the top passer. That’s what I meant. Barkley is the clear #1. But CA has tons of great QBs so leading them ALL in yardage, regardless of competition-level, is still worth noting.

From what I hear UH is probably not going to get the local boys (Manti, Hasiak) with all those BCS offers as they are leaning towards Pac-10 schools, so getting these other top guys early is nice.

JJ did colt and the other UH players right by letting them be men and adults and have to face the local media on their own. all these other big schools are scared to let their guys talk to anyone. you can see how sheltered and priveledged that these players think they are. also they might be protecting their schools image as well. when i watched the ESPN college football challenge that colt participated in, i couldn’t believe the interviews with some of the other players. how did they even get into school with english like that? even more so, what’s their major and how did they pass any classes?
colt is a normal guy and that grows on the common non-player folk like us.

Hope the “BCS” lure does not sway any of our top football palyers.

BCS schools, such as USC, got talented players from across the nation and being the “best” in Hawaii may put a player way down the depth chart. Some may get to start their Junior or Senior year. Maui LB found out SC had tons of better line backers and each year better line backers committed, a further slide down the chart.

even if you’re a BCS player, no guarans you’ll survive. look at ex-all everything WR from USC, Mike Williams. released because he was overweight and out of shape. those BCSers take things for granted. they probably don’t work as hard as the smaller schools like us to go out and prove their worth and skill and continually work at it. from the article, it seems like he woke up this offseason and tried to tone down, but it was just too late.
i bet all the $$$ he made was spent on frivolous things and not saved or invested wisely. you and i would love to make a sliver of their salary, but we need it and use it smartly.

Gross! But that can’t be worse than this one time I went to see Siegfried and Roy. That elephant the used started relieving him(her)self on stage. I swear that the people in front got splashed! I was grateful that I couldn’t afford the close up seats.

I always assumed that JUGS refered to the manufacturer.

  189. Stephen Tsai July 31, 2008 2:57 pm

I think Caryn is like 5-5 or 5-6.
    I can’t really tell.
But don’t forget she’s going to join us for karaoke on Aug. 16.
(I think she’s a backup singer in a local group.)

  190. homey ® July 31, 2008 2:57 pm

A-House – Oh my memory…I remember talking with Raiola’s uncle and he mentioned that Dominic started as a freshman on the o-line and later moved to center. Sheesh, now I can’t even remember the uncle’s name…it’ll come to me.

Rob25 – I think gigi is at Costco buying a new microwave oven.

  191. homey ® July 31, 2008 2:58 pm

  192. Stephen Tsai July 31, 2008 2:59 pm

You’re right. It is the name. I saw that little trademark symbol on its Web site.
They’ve got a JUGS pitching machine that throws curveballs. I’m not sure how that’s possible.

    From:
    http://www.jkpsports.com/support/faq.cfm#q55
Where did the term “JUGS” originate?
The original JUGS Curveball Machine was named from an old-time baseball expression for a curveball, “jug handle curve”. The name stuck and has been part of baseball ever since.

  196. Stephen Tsai July 31, 2008 3:02 pm

So, UH is putting out those irritating rules.
Something about no live blogging at practices. Fans won’t be allowed to take pictures or videos.

  197. Rob25 July 31, 2008 3:03 pm

homey – Did you put your kids in her micro?

  198. Stephen Tsai July 31, 2008 3:03 pm

And yet Homey and Caryn are so not similar . . .

  199. Rob25 July 31, 2008 3:05 pm

ST – Are they going to pay someone to make sure that we aren’t taking any pics at the practices? I find it hard to believe that they are going to be able to enforce that rule. Does that mean you can’t take any pics of Daniel Libre for us?

  200. da princess' classmate July 31, 2008 3:07 pm

was jason gesser a frosh when he started against us in ’99? although he didn’t start til the last quarter of the year or so, IIRC

  201. (Jesse) James July 31, 2008 3:07 pm

A-House…you do have a point about the physicality of Hawaii’s players. I mean, even when I played, I was small compared to my mainland counterparts. That’s why we have to have heart to play the game. Sometimes, heart plays a larger role in a teams success than their physical attributes, or lack thereof.

You’re right though, Hawaii does have a lot of talent.

  202. homey ® July 31, 2008 3:09 pm

    A-House – Joe Siofele? Wayne Apuna? IDK…

  203. (Jesse) James July 31, 2008 3:10 pm

Wreck/blackie…one of da favorite lines from that song…

“I was deaf ear, I never like listen
Now I stay Queens, in critical condition.
My friend Bernard came in and said,
Waste time I came, I t’ought you was dead.”

  204. Stephen Tsai July 31, 2008 3:12 pm

Oh, I’ll take pictures, although, you know, the players do practice with jerseys. No more shirtless photos of Libre and Spencer Smith.
Steele Jantz doesn’t report until Aug. 25.

  205. Blackie (ブラッキ) July 31, 2008 3:12 pm

(J)J, I think Chad Owens is a perfect example of what you are saying. Of course, in the NFL, it is a case where you need heart AND physical attributes to be successful.

  206. Stephen Tsai July 31, 2008 3:13 pm

Anyway, I’ll blog when I get back home. But can somebody remind me to wish Aaron a happy birthday tomorrow? He’s my daughter’s boyfriend. He thinks I don’t like him. Well, he did “accidently” hit my car with his mo-ped. But he’s a good guy.

  211. Rob25 July 31, 2008 3:19 pm

    WHAT?

OK, sorry about that scream…no more shirtless pics…come on, just gotta stalk them on the way to the locker room…in all the heat, they are gonna want to pull them jerseys off.

LizK, just saw your Colt video, great fun, thanks for keeping us up to date on the Colster. He seems to slowly but surely win over the Skins fans. His pre-season game chances will be vital for him, if he shines or even just plays decent, the sky is the limit.

The change at UH in the entire recruiting style is mind boggling. It will bare tremendous fruits in a couple of years, if not sooner. JJ’s leaving may yet to turn out to be Hawaiis greatest blessing.

Man, it really seems like trying to matchup with the TE’s is gonna be crucial come Aug. 30.
Cornelius Ingram is on the watchlist for the Mackey Award.

With Andre Caldwell gone, Ingram is UF’s second-best receiver behind Percy Harvin in what should be an offense that thrives off two-tight-end sets. Ingram averaged 14.9 yards per catch last year, so if he ups his reception total from 34 to 45, he could approach 800 yards. The only thing holding back Ingram’s stats could be sophomore Aaron Hernandez, who could blossom into an integral part of the offense in 2008.

Hernandez figures to be the other TE.

  257. d1島: July 31, 2008 4:38 pm

Hawaii mentioned as a winning program with one of the smallest recruiting budgets. Boise St. is also in that category.

What’s even more interesting is that the teams that are consistently winning — Boise State ($228,172 for men’s sports), Hawaii ($190,387) and Troy ($133,297) — work on some of the smallest men’s recruiting budgets in Division I-A.

  258. bighilofan2inHnl July 31, 2008 5:55 pm

I think the key to winning Florida will be rotating alot of players, kuka pile ice water, lots ah smash mouth football for 60 minutes, an da O playin dah best game ah day lives, right on dis side ah da edges.

Lets go Warriors. Go Go Go.

    Go Warriors!

This gets everyone pumped up and purchase season tix.

  260. Maverick July 31, 2008 6:26 pm

…And ask permission nicely from ESPN for the rights of our other games, and re-broadcast.

    GO WARRIORS!

  261. FloridaTed July 31, 2008 6:29 pm

    bhf2,

I agree with you, that’s exactly why I give the Warriors a real chance to pull out a win. For the first time we seem to have real depth in all positions, on par with the bigger programs. I remember the past well, when so often we hung with the big boys, but then got steamrolled in the fourth quarters, after our starters ran out of gas. In addition, regardless of how Florida will talk before the game, they’ll think of this game as no more than a good warm up. If we get on top of them, they may start pressing and then, if our defense plays as good as advertised, we may force them into some mistakes and then our O catches fire and……….

  262. Mike July 31, 2008 6:34 pm

Yo James! Big Red is good but getting fed up with midday bumper-to-bumper traffic from UH to downtown. Lemme know when you get your wheels rolling so we can hit the road for a real ride.

    Aloha Ted,
Sorry I missed yestereday. No email came through. I have been having server problems lately with my incoming mail. Might want to try again.
Thanks for the compliment. The Ohana is buzzing as high as I am for the season to begin. Our boy might be able to attend the Fresno game with his Warrior fans cousins. The drive from S.F. is not far when there are 4 eligible drivers in the van wearing UH gear!

  265. FloridaTed July 31, 2008 6:44 pm

Just finished watching the tape of Michelles round from Tahoe. I must say her game has vastly improved and seems to begin to round back into shape. She’s putting great today and hit some unbelievable shots from the bunker and rough. Also some very good second and third shots from fairways. One drive she belted 316 yards right down the middle. She needs a few more of those and she’ll make the cut. She used the driver only twice, so a 73 on a 7,500 y course? Not bad, but she needs to get to one under to be save.

    Good evening,

Finally got a chance to watch the vid LizK linked to. YouTube is blocked at work. Good vid. Soon, the world will see what we saw for 3 years. Go Skins!!

Congrats to Caryn. As a fellow Lostie, please post more in the Lost blog, pretty please?

Hey, HA tekkies, you fixed it once, fix it again. Da right side stuff is all the way below this box. Stop tinkering already. Sheesh.

Back to watching more Shark Week shows.

Hellooooo. Did me and the sharks scare everyone away?

  276. Garret July 31, 2008 8:39 pm

    Hi jm2375!

I have some time so I’m going to do my nightly search through the Miami papers for news on Samson, Reagan, and Bess.

  277. d1島: July 31, 2008 8:40 pm

Man, in Gainesville it’s already August.
    bhf2,
You hear dat- it’s Game Month!

    Warriors, baby.
    Believe…again!

  278. Garret July 31, 2008 8:40 pm

    REALLY bad report on Reagan.

Finding ANOTHER fullback to compete with Boomer Grigsby might be a real good idea because I’m expecting Reagan Mauia to be cut any day now if he doesn’t pick it up.

  279. Garret July 31, 2008 8:42 pm

Bess did well in Miami’s redzone drill in practice today.

Henne had 7 plays in their redzone drills.

    3. Davone Bess caught a bullet on a 15-yard out.

McCown had 5 plays in their redzone drills.

    2. End-around to Bess for decent gain.

    3. Comeback to Bess for short gain.

  280. Garret July 31, 2008 8:47 pm

I forgot to note about that Miami practiced in helmets and full pads for the first time in several days.

    Some notes from practice:

Beck starts off 1-for-5 and finishes 4-for-10. He has some nice throws, but also throws an interception to Renaldo Hill. Not sure if that was a nice play by Hill, bad route running by Reagan Mauia, or a bad throw from Beck.

    Henne’s up

Completes a nice short one to Davone Bess, a short out to David Martin (nice catch), a square-in to Ginn and a dump-off to Sean Ryan. 4-for-4, with one coverage sack.

  281. Garret July 31, 2008 8:50 pm

Foster and Bess are returning punts and earlier reports said that Foster had a chance to make the team ahead of Bess because of his special teams skills. So, I thought this report was good news for Bess.

By the way, Davone Bess looked good catching punts and was generally efficient in team drills. Jayson Foster dropped a punt despite a two-minute tutorial from Bill Parcells in the middle of the field.

  282. Garret July 31, 2008 8:55 pm

Some interesting notes from Miami Herald’s beat writer for the Dolphins. Putting Bess at 6th on the depth chart at WR (7th after Miami signs Glenn) puts Bess in some danger of getting cut. I had thought that Foster was quite a bit below Bess on the depth chart!

Tin: I believe your question was which receivers will make the team.

First off, I don’t know for sure because they haven’t played a preseason game yet and if I don’t say that, someone will take what I write out of context and use it for their purposes.

Having said that, I think we all know three guys are pretty solid — Wilford, Ginn, Hagan, who is lately looking better than all of them.

The next level is led, in order of likelihood to make it: Camarillo, Foster, Bess and Armstrong, which is a surprise because he just joined the group.

Kircus has been hot and cold while Dunlap hasn’t really flashed in my opinion

When I spoke with Bill Parcells, he brought up the fact Foster has a good chance as a returner. Given his dual role ability, that increases his chances with this team.

  283. Garret July 31, 2008 8:57 pm

LA Times says that BYU has the best chance to be this year’s BCS-buster.

BYU. It makes sense. The Cougars return the important pieces of the team that capped last year’s 11-2 season with a win over UCLA in the Las Vegas Bowl.

BYU should get a better running start in the polls than Hawaii, which last year began No. 24 in the preseason coaches’ index.

BYU has a tough enough non-conference schedule to satisfy the power-ranking police — Northern Iowa, at Washington, UCLA — and a reasonable chance to win all its games.

  284. Garret July 31, 2008 8:58 pm

LA Times has Fresno State as the 4th most likely BCS-buster.

Fresno State. Probably the best the WAC has to offer this year. The issue, as it is most years for Pat Hill’s Bulldogs, is the schedule. Fresno State opens the season at Rutgers, comes home for Wisconsin and Toledo before a possible roadblock at UCLA. A 4-0 start against that schedule probably puts the Bulldogs in the top 10, and then it’s only a matter of whacking everyone in the WAC.

  285. d1島: July 31, 2008 9:01 pm

Seems like a bunch of Tsaikos may have gone back to the SSC tonight.

  286. Garret July 31, 2008 9:01 pm

Hard to imagine that NMSU hasn’t been in a bowl game since before I was born!

In just two seasons as New Mexico State’s starting quarterback, senior-to-be Chase Holbrook has already sketched his name on 36 different offensive school records. The one thing Holbrook is looking to do in his final campaign as an Aggie is to become just the third quarterback in school history to lead NMSU to a bowl game.

The Aggies have not been to a bowl game since 1960

The only thing on the mind of the QB is registering NMSU’s first winning season since 2002 and recroding a postseason berth.

Drugs found to enable exercise endurance? This could be great for people who need to lose weight…but I bet the first people who will look at using it are athletes. They won’t be able to test for these performance-enhancing drugs at the Olympics (it is a good idea to announce that so that athletes know they can get away with it?), but they will need a test for it soon or a lot of athletes will be using this.

No, Hawaii has great talent, but when compared to the mainland types, they are bigger, stronger, and faster.

I am thinking really hard to recall any Hawaii football player who went to a BCS school and started as a Freshman. Nada.

Actually A-House there have been quite a bit of local players that started as freshmen at BCS schools, although not a lot. Like you said earlier Wayne Apuna was one of them at ASU. More recently, Micah Kia, Kai Maiava, Al Afalava, Jordan Dizon, and JT Mapu. Quite a bit of guys started as redshirt freshmen like Max Unger and Jeremy Perry. I believe that Olin Kreutz and Bern Brostek started as a frehman also. The most impressive player as a freshman would probably have been Jordan Dizon, who was the starting inside backer from his second day of practice as a true-freshman..

I agree with you that for most local players, it would be a benefit to play at home where your chances of starting is probably better than if you did go to a BCS school. Not because the mainland players are better. But simply because the BCS have bigger budgets, long-time traditions, and long football histories. They usually have more depth than Hawaii has. Local players benefit from starting for a number of years which I think prepares them well for the NFL, as opposed to sitting down at a BCS school , and then starting for only one or two years.

Although I must also say that starting at Hawaii has become harder and harder over the last ten years due to the increase in talent and depth. If guys like Jeremy Perry, Max Unger, Shawn Lauvao,

    Hi Liz.

    Sorry for the double post.

  310. Pride. August 1, 2008 12:11 am

By the way, when I first saw Max Unger play as a freshman at Oregon, he reminded me of Gary Zimmerman, who became a hall-famer with the Vikings and Broncos. The Ducks have moved Unger from Tackle to Center. I hope has continued success at his new position.

I apologize to those on the beat who would be offended by my posting about a non-Hawaii football player. Although I am a Hawaii fan, I still celebrate the opportunity that our local athletes have to get an education and to experience their sport at the D-1 level, whether at Hawaii or any other school.

  311. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 1, 2008 12:12 am

Pride. Pretty impressive list there! I really know nothing about football except what I have learned as a fan. It certainly doesn’t compare to the experience perspective one gets as a player.

Each person must make his way with what he has been given- in talent, volition and circumstance. We all seem to get what we need to grow and become better, huh?

Here’s Colt- screwed up early and found redemption and a chance to live his dreams.

Here’s Jordon- sat out his Sr. year to prep for college, had an amazing CU career and screwed up at the end just before the NFL draft.

Both now have something to prove to themselves to make it at this level.

But hey, they are both great guys and we (I) love ’em and want to see them be great human beings no matter what.

Life is interesting. One size does not fit all (my latest litany). Whether people stay near the place they grew up or head out into a bigger world, it’s all about the journey and coming through it a better person.

    Nitey nite and sweet dreams!

  312. Koauka August 1, 2008 1:23 am

Wayne Apuna woulda been I unreal baseball player. But on the diamond, Wayne is pretty intense. One of the few I feared when barreling from third to home.

But after the game, another cool guy. After all I must say good people come from Waipahu.

    Right, Homey!

Just looking at the commit list at a scout site, and noticed that JJ has recruited a tightend, has he change his thinking??

Also Bosie got the number 14 in the country WLB, three of the WAC schools do not have any commits at this time, Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State.

Quite a few big time schools have only a couple of commits so I guess that we are not doing to bad with the five we’ve got so far, and three out of the five are rated as 3 star(but I don’t put to much in the rateings)

Happy 7th Anniversary to Garret & Lori! (Isn’t it weird that the two UH Warrior football helmets are again linked together – Garret’s, and Mike’s friend’s?)

Jason – hope you’re having fun in WI – home of Spotted Cow brewskis! Be safe!

Thanks to Chawan for the reports and photos, and other funnies.

Congrats to Jim Donovan, and to UH and all of it’s faithful fans!

Coach Mack – great signings; solid moves in being straight with the players on PT and rewarding deserving players scholarships. You continue to demonstrate great leadership and judgement as a Coach, manager, mentor, and Tsaiko!

    ST and Tsaikos rule!!! 😆 😯 🙄 😆

Good morning Tsaikos!! Happy Friday! 😀

Hope you all had a great time last night at the fundraiser. How much money was raised?

My nephew played on the line (both ways) with Max Unger at HPA. For such a small team (in size & number), they held their own against their BIIF competition. Got spanked by Castle at the state tournament (before they had DII). Didn’t know who he was at the time and I was focused on my nephew, so … Plus, I know nothing about the nuances of playing each position.

Time for my daily trip over the mountain. Back to school (clothes) shopping and laundry tomorrow. We’ll see about Sunday. Hubby leaves tomorrow nite for SD.

    Have a great weekend.

PS Pomai – UH 35 FL 38. Still hoping Warriors win. Just being a tad realistic.

whitey – My buddies are catching plenty of 15-30# halibut in the SF bay. Supposedly, they don’t eat in the bay – so they should be safe to saute’! They use to go for salmon – but that’s banned. I wish they’d go back to diving for abs! 😀

if any tsaikos are looking for another option to get to the Seattle area, try Alaska Airlines. plane is similar to aloha, but has more seats. the flight time is about 5 1/2 hours and the brew (808????) is very good. they serve both alaska and kona made beers. our flight attendent home was nappy napoleon, one good braddah.

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    okeydokey…

Who’s in your five? Intriguing rookies
“3. Colt Brennan, QB, Hawaii (Washington): The most prolific passer in college history went 186th in the draft. There are knocks on his size, recent injuries and mostly the fact that he was in a run and shoot system that many believe inflated his numbers. But his numbers were so eye-popping (he accounted for 31 NCAA records and more than 14,000 yards of offense) that you have to take notice. He is not expected to get much playing time but what happens in his career will be worth watching.”

  353. whitey August 1, 2008 7:24 am

brew, no get me in trouble with uhfan808 cause she is one nice young lady. you right about she is fresh snow. me, i go places where i not suppose to go, but the “sound of music” affects my brain. funny thing you should say mentions abs. be something if a group of people start protesting that the abs are threatened or may become history in the bay area because no one controls the sea otters. that would be a kick in the rear.

pomai, not the first time, but i always have more fun and memories from each trip. with that said, i going back to the north country next month, but going to one different place. this place i going to get BIG CRABS, but i got to worry about the BIGGER CRABS who have moved into my BIG CRAB country.

ok, got to go to meet my breakfast gang at jacks.

“*Zorn broke down what he expects his quarterback rotation to be Sunday. Jason Campbell will play the first series or two and Todd Collins will finish the first half. Colt Brennan will start the second half and is likely to give way to Derek Divine, but Zorn said he could leave Brennan in if things are going well and let Devine be the No. 3 guy next week.”

Mahalo everyone! I am proud that the Dawgs beat out some good teams for the pre-season top ranking. But time will tell.

Pomai, I’ll check out the tsaikos site more often. I am starting to get excited about football. We are already planning the first tailgate party.

    Colt’s Blog is updated.
“I’m excited to go out there and play. I don’t feel too nervous. Right now, my focus is on trying to get the play formations memorized–that’s something we’re responsible for during the game.

Coming up on my first preseason game, I thought I’d be a lot more nervous. But I don’t really feel that. I think that’s a good thing.

I’m buckling down these next couple days [before Sunday] to memorize everything. That’s the key for me. If I have everything memorized, I’ll feel comfortable out there. If I’m comfortable, I’ll be confident and I’ll have fun. “

    Hiya Merv!

  360. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 1, 2008 7:41 am

On his video, Colt makes a comment about hearing the plays coming through… shades of the Senior Bowl.

Zorn has a video up too and it is clear that he is giving his rookies as much playing time as possible to get them used to the pace of an NFL game.

He talks a bit about Colt – and how he has improved.

My thought is- Colt wiil throw (before the game). And then he will be AWRIGHT!

  361. Stretch August 1, 2008 7:41 am

    Re: Colt being nervous

Wouldn’t it be CLASSIC if Colt takes the field for his first play and right before heading into the huddle to give out the play, he lifts his helmet and throws up!!!

  362. brew808 August 1, 2008 7:49 am

Eh….. @ 7:41a – did Stretch and Liz say the same thing??? – You guys have been hanging out too much together…… 🙄 😆 🙄

    Hey WreckinEyez,

I saw your blog back on July 31st about Freddie Shaka! I am looking for the record for my father. I remember when I was a kid he played it for me. And I just moved here to maui to help him out. And he played it for me again. So I thought I’d look for it for him. Have you found it? I found the one website that lists his name, but they did not have it at the time. My father however does have a cassette he recorded from a friend way back when. If you’d like a copy, I’m sure we can try to copy it and send it to you. Let me know, either way, take care.
