New endeavors for former staffers

You could set a watch to Brad Jones.

As the UH’s director of football administration for four years, Jones arrived before the sunrise, left after the green flash, and did most of the non-coaching chores necessary to a football operation.

His diligence and connections fit his new job as Brigham Young-Hawaii’s athletic director.

Here’s an update on some members from the previous staff:

> Monica Morita: Morita, who was the Warriors’ executive assistant, is now UH-Hilo’s compliance coordinator and senior woman administrator. Dr. Morita — she has a doctorate degree from USC — is a Waiakea High graduate.

> Tom Mason: Last year’s UH defensive coordinator is now the DC at UTEP.

> Don Bailey: Bailey, who was OC last year, is now the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at West Alabama, a Division II school that competes in the Gulf South Conference.

> Luke Matthews: Matthews, who was the receivers coach for three years, turned down a coaching opportunity in Utah. He now is pursuing a firefighter career in Arizona, where he and his wife own a house.

Gouveia was involved with a league that just folded.
Not sure if he’s actively pursuing anything at the moment. He’s Kurt Gouveia. He can get a football job if he decided to get one.

  7. Stephen Tsai May 11, 2016 9:12 am

There’s some hope Samuseva will find a role at UH.
    We’ll see what happens.
    Samuseva is a good guy.

Nice update. Much thanks. Good to know that former coaches and administrators are doing so well. Interesting about Luke Matthews. He might be making the best decision of his life, as the life of a college football coach is a hard row to hoe.

there was a time back in the late 40’s and early 50’s where we would sustain the “annual kona storms” with brilliant flashes of lightning, very loud thunder, and drenching rain that would last for 2 or 3 weeks — when the flood subsided, we went to hook mountain oopu — by the hundreds

then, after the US began to test atomic bombs in the southwest Pacific the weather changed — the Kona storms disappeared and replacing it with very mild kona weather that appeared throughout the year — hot and sticky, but not much rain — and great bolts of lightning appeared – thus, when I went into the Army and saw bolts of lightning, it was awesome and frightening

it was great back then because they cancel school for the duration of the storms — extra long Christmas breaks!!!

do you realize that the Wailua River on Kauai is the only navigable river in Hawaii

so to all, GOOD MORNING VIET NAM!!!

Don Bailey was a top FCS Coordinator running one of the most prolific offenses, how did he end up in Div 2? I know he had to take the QB coach job at Weber State after Chow was fired, but this seems like a big drop-off. The offense was decent under him at UH – at least the running game was.

Just thought he might have other options at the FCS level.

Brad Jones is the lame duck AD if BYU-HI follows through & ends athletics in 2017. But hey nice to have AD on his resume

I will be attending the occasional BYU-Hawaii game to see if there is anybody on the roster who has a skill-set compatible for Division I basketball.

    Mr. Tsai

People reports that Ben Affleck wants Jennifer Garner back.

    Good morning everyone!

Got a call from the UH Ticket office in response to my season ticket renewal request to change seats at Aloha Stadium. Will be relocating a little closer to midfield this season. 🙂

Cannon Activity Center is a nice arena.

Just mulling about thinking about the upcoming season and thought the MWC chose to televise (CBS Sports) perhaps Hawaii’s two toughest games – against San Diego St (Nov 5) and Boise St (Nov 12). They must be thinking Hawaii will improve enough to make the game interesting. Otherwise, why choose to televise Hawaii’s two toughest conference games/opponents? Or maybe they might be thinking a UH-New Mexico or UH-San Jose St game would be very unattractive to viewers. Either way, Hawaii has two opportunities to wipe away the memory of bad losses on national TV over the past four seasons and regain some respect. A lot on the line.

I thought BYU-Hawaii was getting rid of their athletic programs? or is it only certain sports?

    Ephesians 5

13 But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them,14 for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said,

    “Awake, O sleeper,
    rise up from the dead,
and Christ will give you light.”

Will our country be led by a reality show billionaire or a socialist. Are we serious America? C’mon Man, really?

    Romans 11

32 For God has imprisoned everyone in disobedience so he could have mercy on everyone.
33 Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways!
34 For who can know the LORD’s thoughts?
Who knows enough to give him advice?*
35 And who has given him so much
that he needs to pay it back?*
36 For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever! Amen.

Game nights is me work night.
practices since JJ day’s work for me.
Enjoy watching them work at their techniques and give great effort.
It is so much fun watching the boys that bring their hard hat to work day in and day out.
Aloha! Until the sun rises…maybe then we might hear some lineman recruiting news

  29. barak181 May 12, 2016 3:58 am

Sound to me like Luke Matthews and his family had enough of the volatility of coaching and opted for the quiet stability of domestic life. Firefighting pays well and while the shifts are long, you know what they are. And that you’re still going to have a job in three years.

  30. H-Man May 12, 2016 6:16 am

Dave Reardon, in his article this morning, reports that Toni Tuioti is now the Director of Football Operations for MICHIGAN. Yup, Harbaugh’s Wolverines.
