Mustafaa accepts UH offer
Defensive end Naim Mustafaa told the Warrior Beat he has accepted an offer to join the Rainbow Warriors.
Mustafaa said he cannot comment further or participate in training camp until he is accepted into UH. He has paid the application fee and submitted his documents. The Warriors open training camp tomorrow, with first-year players reporting. The rest of the players report on Thursday. The first practice is Friday, beginning at 10 a.m.
Mustafaa initially made an oral commitment to Georgia before deciding to play for Oklahoma State. He graduated from high school a semester early to enroll in OSU’s past spring semester, enabling him to participate in the Cowboys’ offseason conditioning program and spring training. He left OSU after the spring semester, then contacted UH.
Mustafaa said he arrived in Honolulu this past Saturday. He said he notified the UH coaches of his decision to join the team yesterday.
Unless he earns a waiver, he likely will have to sit out this season as part of the NCAA’s transfer rules. After that, he will have four years to play four seasons.
Best NEWS of the day!
1st
Welcome Naim. Best wishes
I hope they don’t sit on the hands twiddling thumbs. Get it done! Welcome Warrior Mustafaa!!!
I hope they don’t sit on the hands twiddling thumbs. Get it done! Welcome Warrior Mustafaa!!!
Sweet! Welcome Naim!
ST,
How do you earn a waiver?
Go Warriors!
Or not, but thank you Naim for commiting to the Hawaii Warrior Football team! The D Line is going to sick next season. With 4 star DE Naim Mustafaa, 4 star DT Kennedy Tulimasealii, 3 Star DT Dejon Allen, 3 Star DE Yap Beau on the D line!
Oops, get I really want them to hurry lol
The way I would argue is to say that the spring semester should count as his redshirt year.
It’s interesting that Mustafaa said he reads the blog. He said: “I’m the mystery defensive end.”
Yes.
Welcome, Mustafaa!
Go, Rainbow Warriors!
Naim!
It sounds like the kid has a sense of humor, always a good trait.
Welcome Mr. Mustafaa!
Thanks for picking the Warriors!!!
Mr. Tsai, I think it’s a big feather in the cap of the UH coaching staff to land a player like Mustafaa, it turns up the excitement level.
Good morning…mother nature storm came and went…in other news UH Rainbow Warrior storm is coming to a town near you!
Praying everything goes well. Go UH Upper Campus! Go Football Program!
It just gets better and better. Go Rainbow Warriors!
The scout team just got better, eh? Welcome to Hawaii, Warrior Mustafaa!
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
No longer a mystery – big welcome to Mr Mustafaa!
Wow what great news. Best recruit of the class comes at the last minute. Better yet he recruited us.
Defensive end Naim Mustafaa…Call him Mistah Mustafaa…
Welcome Naim and GBU and your Grandma.
Go clobber USC!
It would be really nice to have Naim aboard this year. Would be a great boost to the D-line depth and athleticism.
I think we should call him Fa’a and introduce him to Fa’a Samoa!
The best ingredients in a long time….let’s hope chow can serve up something special in the next 2 years
Naim and Kennedy will be a FORCE!!!
Such great news!!!
I also think that the college counselors should begin to help this young man set for what he envisions as his post-football career. The Business School folks would also want to “recruit” this young man. He seems to excel in the classroom and it would be quite a plus for future recruiting if he can also star in the classroom.
What a terrific all around get for the university.
If released he was on spring roster. Should get pass….hope he does. Very nice addition—
Yes, thank you for choosing Hawaii, Mr. Mustafaa. I hope you find Hawaii as wonderful as we think it is. We are also hearing good things about you. You are helping to build a modest football program and you definitely make a huge difference here. Good things are coming!
in unrelated news, story about A-fraud off CNNSI: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mlb/news/20130730/a-rod-price-column/?sct=hp_t11_a2&eref=sihp
i’m convinced he would be a good pick for UH’s next baseball coach. yeah, sounds crazy but hear me out. first of all, he’s filthy rich and wouldn’t need a big base salary. coaching at the college level would be a way for him to “redeem” himself and stay involved in baseball, what his life has been about. it would also be a way for him to get AWAY from the big time news media. he may even pick up the tab for new facilities or repairs on existing ones. and don’t underestimate the “name” appeal and notoriety he would bring to the UH program! yes, he could expect boos and heckling, but he can handle it. it would be difficult to find anyone who has better knowledge of the game, pitfalls of taking PED’s or shortcuts, and naturally would be able to cover up any misdoings and avoid NCAA probation! call me crazy, but it DOES make sense…when you put it into perspective. besides, it isn’t like the program is much more than mediocre at this point.
I nominate Lewis Powell for MWC recruiter of the year.
Nickname that suits the most I think is Naim ” The Dream” Mustafaa…
We don’t get DEs like this even once a decade. So gonna have to enjoy Kennedy and Naim while we have them. Here’s to them 2 having a healthy 4 years at UH… Maybe this will help us land Lamone..
ST,
You think Naim will have any trouble being accepted into UH?
Good morning Tsaikos!
Great news! Welcome, Mr. Mustafaa.
It’s so dang humid, I feel like I’m in Florida. 🙄
Good morning after!
Super news about new Warrior Mustafaa!
Whoo-hoo!!!
Was UH recruiting him out of high school?
Nice, very nice…..that’s a very good looking cornerstone for the future of the program.
and the “up-grade” continues for the Warriors!
Welcome, Naim Mustafaa to the Rainbow Warrior family which now has a foothold along the East Coast!
Any friends who may be interested in transferring or committing out of high school to a career to help “‘build a football program”?
ST,
Do you think that he has a legit chance to earn a waiver???
Aloha Naim! Bring da pain baby!
This speaks volumes for UH and its coaching staff. Long range benefit – might encourage other top-notch players to at least look at Hawaii.
Oklahoma State didn’t release him. He walked away.
Gundy has said OSU would welcome him back, if he chose to return.
Ok, I was on the train this morning, and with the combination of it being summer (thus, the university is pretty slow) and having some free time on my hands, I compiled my own all UH NFL team. Now, a couple of items of note: its UH only, as there are plenty of local kids who went to school elsewhere and might have more bona fides; two, there is an extra position on offense depending on the O spread you would want to run; three, we are really thin at QB as none of our guys have played in the regular season, except for Bernard Quarles who played during the 87 strike season.
Go ahead, state your own preferences and let the arguing begin….

Great Morning All!
Welcome Mr. Mustafaa.
Go Rainbow Warriors!
I like the fact that this coaching staff is building a solid foundation for the future. The current coaching staff seems to be unrelenting in their recruiting efforts.
Welcome Mufasa… oops I mean Mustafaa
Come on someone had to make a lion king reffrence
Hope he can be our next Pisa! E Komo Mai! hope you find a good home here! Welcome to the Warrior OHANA!
#42 who was that UH player who I believe played for the Houston Oilers as a special team guy on kick offs. That guy has great speed and was pretty good at the position.
Did John Woodcock also have a good NFL career?
There was also a long snapper who played for the Seahawks a while back that was pretty solid.

By all accounts, Mr. Mustafaa is a very good student, graduated from high school early and he already knows what major he wants to study, Travel Industry Management. That’s a strong indication why he wanted to come here. I’m confident he will be admitted to UH and I also think he has a very good case to received a waiver so he can play this year. Yeah, he went to spring practice at Oklahoma State, but he never played a game and didn’t even finish a full year in college at OSU. Call it a mulligan.
It’s not every day that UH can get a 4 star rated player. I just hope that Mr. Mustafaa enjoys his experience in Hawaii and gets his degree. From a football standpoint, no question, he can make a big impact. This is another indication that the new coaching staff is starting to make inroads in getting very good recruits and in their evaluations. We just need that one talented and efficient QB to take us places where we have never been, a Rose Bowl.
Hal Stringert, safety (72-73) played in the NFL for 6 seasons. Nice guy. Used to talk story with him at the old Nautilus Fitness Center on S. King Street back in the day.
Mike Akiu….fastest person in UH history. Legitimate low 4.3s, rumored 4.2 times. In fact, its been documented that he beat Ron Brown (former gold medalist in 84 4 by 100 relay team, and ex-Ram receiver, on a couple of different occasions.
Seattle snapper you are talking about, also played for Cardinals…ex Kamehameha great Kani Kauhi, he is technically eligible as he started at ASU.
Yes, for me it was between Hal and Blaine for the safety spot, and truth be told, Hal had a longer career…However, Blaine did have a TD return on a Monday Night game.
Boolakanaka,
Chad Owens best returner!
Awarded the Mosi Tatupu Award for best Special Teams Player in 2004!
Those are some really good players on defense. Getting nostalgic for the stout defenses of old! Tom Tuinei was pretty Bad A_ _ himself. Did he play in the NFL?
Haka–would have loved to put him on, but his record in the NFL was not to par. Made the club on two occasions but had problems with muffed punts. That said, he really fits in the CFL and is a premier player in that league.
Oh, Tui played in the NFL for the Lions for a season or two.
Boola, a good list. No list of this type is complete without Semeri Ulufale somewhere in there. With that being said, your list is very good.
57–OK, point taken, we will reserve a special teams spot for my favorite sole as: wedge breaker; oldest looking 17 year old I have ever seen (was a soph when we played Farrington, he was a senior,, and I thought, my god, this dude is like 32) and front door security at Red Lions circa 1982.
boola,
true dat! forgot it was only nfl you were referring to.
Disillusioned w/ previous schools this yr., he may have found what he was looking for besides the right academic fit. E komo mai, Main!
I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for Gary Allen. He was the first “star” in our fledgling D1 program. Slight body, big heart, happy feet. Was the face of the program for four years.
Too bad Chad O only had two cups of coffee in the NFL. No one raised the fans anticipation level as high as he did. The whole stadium would be on edge waiting to explode out of their seats whenever he was about to return a kick. Waiting for the moment to yell go.Go..GOOO.
Familiar troll….BORING!!!
Good Morning Tsaikos!!!
Welcome to Mr. Mustafaa!!!
yawn
Great post everyone! #61 I ‘d luv you, how’s the proverbial ” eat your words” this time around! Until this year you’re absolutely correct! Watch us on CBS!
Hmmn–
Is it true USC is merely a placeholder for those beleaguered souls who couldn’t get into a UC or Stanford, and thus take solace, and an overt exercise in overcompensation, in spending exorbitant amounts of their parents money to one of the more overrated schools in the nation ( see; http://education-portal.com/articles/20_Most_Overrated_Colleges.html)? Just asking…
RIP Senator Byrd.
Wild guess….SCT. Are you CG in disguise? “dumb green leaves” was a crafty way of hiding the fact that you live here and know very well what they’re called.
Just don’t take a drive through USC’s campus at night, especially if you’re driving a nice car. Most students scram before sundown at that school.
Hey Mr. ScT. he came awful close if it weren’t for a couple critical t/o in the 3qtr. last home game, but hardly “embarrassing”!
General George Armstrong Custer comes to mind come Aug. 29! Oooh yeaaa!
#69,71,72 & 73 are posted by our resident moron. ST can validate this.
It is, I believe, acknowledged that USC has better athletes on their team than Hawaii, but do they have the “heart”; the “will” to win.
Their will is not to be embarrassed on the road playing a “mid-major” team; that’s not the will” I’m talking about.
I can best describe the “will” to win by describing a passage from the Korean historical drama Joumong when an older man, who fought with Hemosua and the rebels against the Han in 86 A.D. who said, “the Han do not have the will to win; we will win because we are willing to die for what we believe in – a free and independent nation like the ancient nation of Jousan.”
Nice job recruiting!
I personally welcome fans from enemy camps chime in about their beloved team. Exchanging heated and intelligent conversation is great ( as long it stay that way)! What “gets” me is those ” imposters” who pretend to be tsaikos but despies us just the same!
“
Good (humid) morning everyone!
Welcome Naim Mustafaa!
Somebody is getting his jollies again.
# 73 A-HOUSE:
I don’t know why we cheered for Jumong when both my wife and I are of Han ancestry!
Naim, welcome to Hawaii! You will love it here!
Study hard and get your degree! Make Hawaii your home!
Tom:
It is a paradox, but Jumong was a truly wonderful series to watch – many say that his represented the very best of Korea’s tv industry – acting, costumes, scenery, sub-titling, etc.
Hope you both enjoyed the Jumong “special”!
The magic of DELETE. Nice!
But I wish someone would save those wonderful quotes and put them up on the locker room wall at UH.
Great news!
Naim or Naeem is of Arabic origin. Meaning “blessing or ease.” Also means “comfort or tranquility.”
He already has the name. May he be a blessings for us for many years to come. Salaam Aleikum Naim. Aloha and welcome to the Rainbow Warrior ohana. May these years ahead bear many good fruit.
BIK
Taase and Travis would get some votes on a very formitable d-line and K Forney on the o side along with J Fenderson on s/t !
Hey ST,
You’re getting popular in OK. I just saw a ton of articles linked to the blog…
Taase, one of my favorites. I think he had a shot with the Steelers.
Yeah, Fenderson really earned his way as a S/T guy with the Saints. Jason Elam was such a spoiler. We were so lucky to have him. Really, he spoiled us as a kicker. What a weapon.
Yep IR and on/off taxi squad all with Steelers! As far as playing time can’t argue w/ bradda Boola. However where does that leave Travis Laboy?
I nominate Levi Stanley for a DT position!
I think Levi Stanley is right up there on the DL. At WR, Jason Rivers had a great career.
Welcome Naim, glad to have you as a Warrior. Much success to you both on and off the field.
Hey Buffoman you not kidding when you say spoiled. Ever since his freshmen season, he had ice water running through his veins, that FG against IOWA! Boy that was one of my fondest memories! Actually third greatest memory at that time. Coach Tomey gave me my first two greatest memories when it comes to UH futbol.
On bradda Boola’s all UH, all NFL team? Levi one of my favorite UH players though!
kani kauahi…the guy with the black hi-top shoes
Jason Rivers was clutch in 2007 @SJSU and @Nevada. Saw it with my own two eyes. He wanted the ball. Give me the $*%&$ ball, Colt… Tyler. Total gamer.
Welcome Naim! You made this Warrior fan extra happy this past week with news of your arrival and passion to help build upour program. Best wishes to the team as they take on 2-a-days. I still have nightmares of “Coach Beemer” like coaches from High School, even Pop Warner.
Dream City and Buffo..you both make compelling lucid arguments for your players mentioned. In fact, Travis and Henderson were probably the closest calls in my mind, and I would probably say, if you were to do away with “fullback” designation, then James gets the nod over Regan. As for Travis, he was highly productive and it came down to him versus Larry Cole, who got my nod because of a couple super bowl appearances, coupled with the fact that I wanted to honor some of our old school guys.
GoBows—Saw Kani in the early 80s, he was home for a visit, and I see him in some local bar (maybe hanks back in the day), and he was a sight to behold. Obviously a big braddha, but it was his pants, he was sporting a bright blue palaka pair of slacks….now, that’s what I call style!
Naim Da Dream AND Kennedy! Don’t wake me up…I must be dreaming!
So was the athletic Dept unable to strike a deal with the UH Housing people to house the football team during the first two weeks of fall camp? School doesn’t start until August 26 and the dorms don’t open until August 20th.
Also, I can’t wait to see Dejon play, and the rest of the great recruits suit up and contribute. I met a relative of the Lee coaching family today in SF. Great day to be a Warrior.
Yep LC and Maa both won Super Bowls (if I’m not mistaken) thus your nod over TL! Das the tie breaker i’d say!
#91 Elam getting called on to kick was like the Yankees calling on Mariano to close a game. MONEY!! I remember during his third year, it was a tight game and it was a pretty packed house. We get into position in the late 4th quarter (this is when our D was the real deal) and out trots, Jason. I tell my wife, let’s go, game over. I can listen to the results after the cheering. Got out before the traffic mess.
Now, I am not sure of my count, but my informal recollection says, of the players I have listed, there is a total of 16 Super Bowl appearances (note, not all were SB winners). That’s not too shabby at all…..
Hey Boolakanaka I going hemo your mask with all your coordinates you’re leaving on the blog! I not telling anyone if I figure it out! (only joke!)
Wilbert Haslip for fullback. Not for injury could have had a long NFL career. Same for Joe Onosai at center. Arnold Morgado at runningback.
Aloha to our new recruit. May you have a great experience in Hawaii. Learn our culture and you will be glad you did. Coach Chow said from the beginning that he was going after the top recruits and not stop recruiting. Go Rainbow Warriors!!!
Dream mike…ST already knows, but then again he knows most things worth knowing…lol
Exactly bradda Buffo auutoomaatic!
Exactly bradda Buffo auutoomaatic!
#98 – Old School Dave
From what I understand, the Housing people claim that it would be a violation of NCAA rules to offer the football players discounted housing price without offering it to the general student body.
So I don’t understand why the Housing people doesn’t offer the discount to the entire student body. I can’t imagine non-football players wanting housing prior to the beginning of school.
Redzone–my bad with Arnold, who for UH trivia buffs married Karen Yano, the UH homecoming queen (man, I’m on a roll today). Seriously, Arnold, I have unilaterally decided upends Regan. As for Joe, he never made it to the regular season, but all in the know, say he was on the road to being a starter with the cowboys.
And you will continue to live in anonimity my brother!(as I make an imaginary sign of the cross) Go in peace!
My role is to cultivate and nurture the aspirations and intellectual pursuits of the Tsaikos, and remain in the shadows.
A-joe…sent you an e-mail…
Gramps…did you see my FB post on your USC T-gate comment/post? BWaahhahaha
Oh, ST I am trying to remember a possibly HS classmate of yours–v-ball player, maybe 79 grad, named I think Barbara, she went to Willamette–??
When’s does fall camp start?
You interpreted the blueprint yourself now to mentor others! (Just sermising)
There are two kinds of people, those who do the work and those who take the credit. Try to be in the first group; there is less competition there.
Indira Gandhi
Seriously, wanted to meet everyone at the SC game, but I need to be on campus as the semester starts that week, but will be back home the week after and at the Vegas and Navy games.
Good Afternoon Folks!
Very happy to hear Naim Mustafaa will be a Rainbow Warrior! I hope he gets his waiver!
Only thirty days left…BEAT USC!!!
So sad. Condolences to all parties.

Good job recruiting coaches!
Aloha Naim Mustafaa!
On another local note, congrats to Carissa Moore for winning the Women’s Vans U.S. Open of Surfing and taking over the #1 spot in the Women’s ASP Pro tour rankings.
GO HAWAII!
Condolences to the families of Aggies players! C mon man, can we please get a break for once from thy almighty one …NCAA, please!
Welcome aboard Naim. So good to have you here!!
Shucks Boola I was going to mention that we could somehow hook up at the pregame…then you mentioned that you would be home the first two wks. of Sept.! I humbly would be honored (as I would any other tsaiko, me being of 2 weeks on your guys blog.. mahalo Mr. Tsai)
boolakanaka….Let us know when you’ll be home…We can have a Cattle Call to meet up…. 🙂
Same goes for you dream city mike
Will do guys, sounds like we are going to have close down one of the side-street cafes??!
Hi ST – is Naim’s last name Mustafaa or Mustaffa? Noticed the latter on his video highlights posted earlier…
Have to respect Jordan Hoiem’s decision to give up football and a scholarship to Oregon. He’s still young and a lot can change in a year or two. Who knows, he may regain that fire and desire to play football sometime in the future. I would think that the UH coaches will respect Hoiem’s decision, but at the same time keep in touch with him from time to time.
I know this has been discussed now for many years but the UH should be in the fore front of developing the Asian market. We need someone to come up with a comprehensive plan to market UH Athletics in the Asian market. There is no way we should allow the PAC 10 to beat us to this market. We need a solid vision with a game plan to build a solid foundation and explore the possible contributors to our program from this area. This cannot be a piece meal planning but a meaningful plan encompassing several years targeting specific areas establishing strong partnerships.

May you find the true path that will make you happy in your life Jordan Hoiem. You’re young with so much ahead of you. Trust your instincts and have no doubts. It sounds like you have so many questions that you are asking of yourself but don’t beat yourself over your head. Just give of yourself and live unselfishly and the answers you are searching for will come. Do well with your academics in your senior year on Maui.
Oh aug 9th. Right on, shoots.
Seems like Chow will have PAC-12 size this year.

#137. I’m sure Alabama Coach Nick Saban is sleeping well after seeing the pictures and reading the story about his player. I bet this freshman never makes it to Bama. To stupid to flaunt all that cash.
congratulations naim “da dream” mustafaa on becoming the newest, er, “rainbow” warrior!
My opinion with UH and the Asian market….
Being in Asia I can say don’t try to bridge the market using football. Football is really a US sport.
Bridge the market with olympic sports like basketball for China and the Philippines. Swimming for all countries in Asia and ASEAN. Soccer (football) for almost all Asian and ASEAN nations or even golf. Revive baseball to connect with countries like Taiwan, Japan, Korea. Bridge the market with Hawaii’s culture which we all know IS Asian influenced. Bridge the future by showing them our past ties with Asia and how Asia’s cultures have mixed in very well with Hawaii’s. Most importantly, bridge the market by showing what a great school UH is to get an education.
If you take this road the Asian market will not just hear of US college teams like Notre Dame, Stanford, etc. They will hear and see and be interested in maybe enough to follow and send their kids to a US college called Hawaii if we do some goodwill or exchanges, or whatever the NCAA allows. The key is that you cannot come to Asia with football alone, you will never connect. You have to come to Asia or ASEAN with sports they already know and with an understanding that for parents education may be all that matters. Market the school more then sports…and then say oh by the way, does your child play golf, basketball, enjoy swimming, soccer, baseball, etc.
The truth is the US is a very inward looking country. We love football so much, we don’t even notice the rest of the world doesn’t care that much about it. Bridge the market with Hawaii, UH, olympic sports that Asia and ASEAN follow and play, and then it will open up the door to football.
And at the very least, recruit for sports like golf. You would not believe how much talent from Thailand and Singapore goes unnoticed. These are smart kids who can speak English and can be admitted to UH no problem. At least this way, you start a buzz with students and parents when their child gets a letter of interest from UH…and the seeding begins.
Hit the junior programs…that’s where you want to start. From my experience with junior programs these kids are looking at dead ends when they hit 16-18. They know of USC, Stanford, etc. but they don’t know how to get there through sports.
Mr Ben Jay, create a map for these kids to follow. Where do they need to be at what points in their life in order to get into UH and create a special Aian/ASEAN administrator who will open every email, contact every junior sports organizations, and have a someone planted with boots on the ground in Asia/ASEAN to reach out. Or at the very least, skype or video conference with schools and junior organizations.
For example, contact the Singapore Golf Association, that’s their junior golf governing body. Skype with them, Q and A. Tell them you are interested and Hawaii is interested in recruiting their talent. Showcase the culture, UH, and the golf program. Tell them you understand that for 2 years all males are required to do military service but for them not to stop their sport because Hawaii may have a place for them after them after their service. Do these things and the kids will know you and follow you and parents will open up to you.
The truth is and in my opinion this is the vision…we aren’t going to Asia to look for football players. Maybe we’ll find a handful. But the vision is to get a large following of Hawaii and Hawaii sports in Asia. And to me, that starts at the junior level with sports the follow and play. Get in touch with junior organizations and you’ll see just how far things can go.
Don’t come to Asia with American football on your mind. Come to Asia with the people here and what they like on your mind…and go from there.
my two cents 🙂
in sadder news, one time hawaii recruit, gaius vaenuku (euless hs/utah) was killed in a solo car crash along with two others.
God be with you.
Boola, I have to go with David Toloumu over Mauia at fullback. Toloumu had a pretty good NFL career with the Jets.
