Ryan Blangiardi is the Rainbow Warriors’ assistant director of football operations.
I’m not sure when he started the job because he’s so humble he didn’t announce it. His duties include assisting with, well, everything. If you call UH football’s main number, that’s also Blangiardi answering the phone.
He’s smart, diligent and willing to put experience over paychecks. His position is considered a “casual hire.”
Blangiardi worked the past season as assistant video coordinator. He knows a thing or two about that. His father is Rick Blangiardi, who pioneered the modern era of Warrior football telecasts.
Ryan Blangiardi also has worked in Chaminade athletics and served as district executive of Boys Scouts of America/Hawaii.

Never played nickel machines for money but when we went to Nationals, my friend would play for hours. I’m talking 8 hours or more. But they used to take our football bets. We were in high school and won every week until the guys in a big black cadillac that ultimately pays us, wanted to meet us and delivered our money personally. Those guys were huge and intimidating. We quit gambling after that.

Aloha all! Just a follow-up to some of the baseball discussion that was on the tail-end of our discussion last night. 321 jalansky:
I faced Tatsuno (tats) in many practive bats, not in games, he is 4-5 years my senior, but in practices. And let us not even consider the velocity he get got on the ball, if you look at old footage of him, an insane amount of torque was placed into his pitching. He woule usually let you hit, so he would be taking it really easy on us young guys, but if you ever got the better of him, he would come at you at like 80-90 percent and it would blow your mind.
His slider was especially wicked. Especially, batting as a switch, it just fell off. Moreover, he had incredible precision to keep it constantly within 2-3 inches of your knees. And then play with you, always progressing an inch or so, further away. Next think you know, you are swinging like a fool, at a pitch that is near Kaamilo. (a main road in aiea)

When I lived in Kapahulu in college, there was an “arcade” store in what is now the Safeway shopping center. I walked in, and noticed there was a slot machine. Guys were getting papers from the machine, then walking to the cashier. Boing! It dawned on me there was money to be made — or lost. As beginner’s luck would have it, I made some money. Then I told my wife, and she went there and made money. And we went the next day and saw a bunch of cars with blue lights surrounding the place.

30 ST—Uncle Frank was never a taste suitable for people across the board. Keeping in the spirit of this being a sports blog, many folks do not know, that his son, Dave Fasi, was an elite water polo player at Harvard, and is in their athletic hall of fame.
ST: The lady living nearby my home said she recently called the Refuse Dept. to request a second trash bin (green) . She was denied. The explanation was that about 8 months ago they came out with a new a new policy of allowing only one per home. I wish I knew what was going on here. The city taxes us for the Rail. It increases the sewage fees every year. So now it wants to charge $10 for trash pick up. Then again there’s the ever rising property taxes. Some on the mainland complain about how the government nickels and dimes you to death. Here in Honolulu its way worse than that. So they say that the police need a hefty pay raise as does all the other city employees. Pretty soon only the rich can live here! Auwe! and I mean away we go!

Last week I went to the UH Baseball game and cut through Ching Field to see some of the DB’s working out. I then saw this Haole guy, who was pretty ripped, running 40 yard dashes. I didn’t recognize him and was wondering if this was a guy getting ready for the walkon auditions.
I also saw Charles Clay, Jr and Tony Grimes running 40’s and getting ready for Pro Day.
Oh this ripped guy reminded me of Joel Ragsdale who tried out at RB/LB 2 years ago, made the spring squad but not the fall. Only thing with a little more upper body muscles.

12, Boolakanaka: Aiea Field to Kaamilo St., I know what you mean (I’m from Pearl City, and played at that field). The word “fan” meaning strikeout comes to mind. In that game I mentioned, Tatsuno had the Oregon players “fanning” (not “swinging”) at the pitches . . . A person mentioned John Matias yesterday, and it brought to mind what I consider to be one of the greatest feats ever in local high school athletics: Matias’ four home runs in four consecutive at-bats at Honolulu Stadium in the state championship game. 59…Very nice feature on Matias! Many people don’t realize that Tats, if I recall correctly still holds two NCAA records, one, strikeouts, per 9 innings, where he had 234—Derek Tatsuno, Hawaii, 1979 (174.1 inn.) and one of only 2 guys that had 20 wins in a season.
DPK, he’s looking for a team that runs the Pro Style offense. The plus side is his brother’s Senior Year at NC State. In 1 season under Norm’s offense he threw for 4,491 yards and 34 touchdowns and was named ACC POY and ACC Athlete of the Year.

Gotta throw in some football. One guy that folks never really talk about, but he was with the a Raiders during some of their glory years is Arthur Smith. Played at Radford, was actually a running back, and then played at LB in college, was from around Halawa way. Anyone remember him?

I got an Arthur Smith story for you. One of the strongest dudes I ever seen. He used to play hoops with us down at Lehua Park back in the day. I believe he was on the Raiders practice squad at least one year.
We had a 6’2, 270 guy who was one of the bulls at the park and one day he and Arthur were battling. Arthur just picked the guy up and put him out of the key – like he was a little kid. That was the end of the battle!
But I remember him as a really good guy.
I also believe it was Arthur who told us this story about the Raiders. Jon Matuszak (sp?) the crazy dude who played for them once kidnapped a Mormon missionary who had come by and he made the guy smoke and drink all the way back to Utah before he let him go. Something like that – remember I heard this story about 30 years ago. But I’m sure it was true.

I believe john matias is the career homerun leader at UH. Fruit dont fall far from the tree. He was also a pretty good safety at damien.
Arthur was sort of a quiet guy, but not to be messed with at all. He would take whoever of us young punks, who did’t have money or wasn’t willing to jump a fence/wall (but thats almost nobody in Halawa) to HS football games at Aloha Stadium, and explain stuff….
Perhaps we can pay more for “premium” trash pickup.
Manoa Mist, just because you mentioned Lehua Park it reminded me of Pearl City, and the strongest QB I ever saw….Kevin Kamai, bruddha could put or 4-5 plates on each side, and lift with ease.
Not sure if it’s just a story but someone told me that Tat’s once threw a baseball from the parking lot of Aiea baseball field to the top of the gym…

The big baseball lore story, was this guy named Guy Horie, I played with his younger brother Dean (they both went to Iolani later) and he smacked one in the swimming pool, clear on the other side of the gym….That is quite a poke, I think there were some bounces involved.

In the early 80’s i used to borrow my cousins cruiser, bike down from halawa heights to aloha and hide it in the bushes and sneak into the oia games at the stadium. I had id for the ilh games.

Gobows, those were the days huh? At present, we live in such a different environment, but what I still recall on going to those triple- header ILH games, is the smell of saimin on a cool evening, then the game, then maybe checking out private school girls….but in that order.
What is Gerald Ako doing these days? I remember back in the day when he was the man coming out of Aiea and I thought was the local kid that started Rainbow Baseball’s success. I think he was a year or two ahead of Tats.
Not a bad schedule, from the looks of things. I’m guessing the Colorado St. and San Jose St. weekends will be the road games where the team just stays on the mainland for 2 weeks. The only cold weather game looks to be at Colorado St. in November. Can’t wait!

I use to live down the street from Mr. Ako, and he is two years tats senior. He spent a fair amount of time in the minors, and actually played some other positions, other than pitcher. If I am not mistaken, bruddha is now on Kaua’i.

The mention of Matias being the HR leader for UH reminds me of a couple of great hitters that I don’t hear much about today. One of my favorites because of his stature was Greg Oniate. He was one of the best hitters even though he was pretty short and stocky. The other HR hitter that I got to meet was Joey Meyer who gave me a Brewers bat that he autographed.

Ok, talking about syndicate people reminds me of a funny story when I was a sporting goods rep (calling on schools and teams) in my early days. I had Roy Ryder (known hit man) come in with another guy whose name I forgot but Roy tells me his friend needs a size 9 and a size 10 which puzzled me until I looked at his one foot which had his toes sliced off. I chuckled but didn’t want to laugh too hard. Roy showed me some crater looking pits on his body which he said were bullet holes. I also remember delivering stuff to this service station in Kaneohe past Servco which had a backroom where they played cards. Roy asked me if I wanted to join them but politely declined.

For me, Hemmeter is the more tragic story. Almost something out of Scott Fitzgerald. In the end, he made the crucial mistake that is almost rule 1 of tycoon real estate development. The secret of the game has always been to utilize debt financing, in both the initial stages, as well as a counter to the bank.
Chris, lost his fortune, that is to say, his own money, when he could not obtained further dollars from traditional banking/financing for his New Orleans project, and used whatever fortune, he still had in liquidity. Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

ILH triple headers @ Aloha Stadium. Pac-Five almost always played in the first game. At least it got us out of school early. Had to trek up to MPI to catch da bus to da Stadium, since I wasn’t in da band.
If we are not careful, we are going to hear that ST is good friends with “Uncle Charlie”. Yes, it would bode well for all of us, if we were to get ST some nice Apple products or something, before we have an unusual view of Maili Beach.

Roy Ryder used to live on Lilipuni Rd in Kaneohe and had some action over there. Spent many years living in Kaneohe because of my long time girlfriend.

“Hawaii, even in boom years, even in the early 1980s … always functioned as a small place.
This could lead to personal associations that might seem surprising to people not born in the Islands.
Take Roosevelt High School in Honolulu in 1952. The varsity and junior varsity football squads of that year included Wilford K. (“Nappy”) Pulawa, Roy R. Ryder, Sherwin K. “Sharkey” Fellezs, Dante K. Carpenter, Arthur Hoke, Spencer K. Schutte and Larry D. Price.
Other classmates of Pulawa, not on the football teams, included Danny Kaleikini and Matthew S.K. Pyun Jr.
Pulawa went on to head the Hawaii syndicate from about 1969 to 1975. He was in federal prison 1975-1984.
Ryder became a gunman and admitted killer, who eventually turned prosecution witness; his testimony on 1975 was instrumental in convicting Pulawa.
Fellezs became an entertainer. During Pulawa’s trials Fellezs testified that he served as a front for several of Pulawa’s real estate investments.
Carpenter became a successful politician on the Big Island, elected to the County Council and State Senate; in 1984 he was elected Big Island mayor.
Arthur Hoke became a police captain on the Big Island.
Schutte became a Honolulu policeman and later a Big Island rancher and councilman.
Price became a celebrity in various ways: as coach of the University of Hawaii football team, then a reporter for KITV television and an announcer on K-59 radio.
Kaleikini became an extremely successful entertainer, and
Pryne an accomplished lawyer and part-time state district court judge. . . .
The cases of Kalikini and Pyun appear to illustrate how school friendships might lead to later associations that some might find questionable.
In Kalikiki’s case, according to Sharkey Fellezs’ testimony in the Pulawa trials, it was a friendship formed at the University of Hawaii with Fellezs.
When Pulawa was putting together his Forbidden City real estate deal in 1972-1973, he approached Kaleikini through Fellezs to serve as a front. The project was to emphasize entertainment, and Kaleikini’s involvement would lend an appearance of substance and legitimacy.
During Pulawa’s second tax trial, Fellezs testified that, “Danny and I being fraternity brothers,” he was the best person to approach Kaleikini. Fellezs said that “Nappy said fine.” Fellezs then arranged for the three (and one or two others) to meet at the Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel.
Fellezs went on: “When Danny came up, I explained the whole project to Danny. We didn’t need his money, $35,000, because we had any amount of money that we needed already . . . All we wanted to do was laundry the money. Rinse our money out…
“All we needed was Danny to come in and be a front. We would give him back his money.
“On top of that we would give him stock in Pacific Monarch (the front corporation). In fact, I made him an officer.”…

The Forbidden City real estate deal included running a nightclub on the property that was to emphasize Hawaiian musical talent.
Henry Huihui told a reporter in 1978 that he first became acquainted with Pulawa about 1970 over concerns they shared about a land issue in Kalama Valley, Oahu, that had a good deal to do with Hawaiians.”

His brother Ryan signed with BYU in 2009 then went on an LDS mission.
He returned and played with Ray at Snow College in 2011 and 2012.
If he comes with Ray, he could walkon at Oline for his Senior Year. He’s listed at 6’3”, 325 lbs

JM 2375 oh, you private school women??! The bus that was part of my daily routine, was the no. 50 Makaha. One time I got on the last bus at ala moana, and missed my stop in Makakilo and woke up near Waianae. Had to bang on Ronald Baileys house, yes all state at St. Louis in 1980, to call my mom to pick me up. Damn she was mad!!!!
Tsai – CU Boulder isn’t that far from the casino town Blackhawk, CO… that’s where I am probably going this season.
I heard this story about the Point After. ‘Member bothers “Bonchi” and “FOF”, where are they now? Anyway, one late night, Ronald Ching was at the back bar holding court when they announced last call. It was told that “Ronnie” as he was called, reached in his jacket, pulled out his 357 and calmly placed it on the bar. Suffice to say, they weren’t closing. Maybe someone can corroborate.
Is 4 wins with this schedule enough to convince fans to buy in to this staff and the future? Realistically, I don’t see us going to a bowl game this year breaking in a new QB with a lot of new O linemen too. Defense has a chance to be good so you never know.
I am going to set my expectations realistic and if this team can win 4 games with a new QB and young O line, it would give my reason to think Hawaii can go to a bowl game next year.
Norm Chow’s biggest mistake besides having below average assistants in his 1st 2 seasons was not bringing in a QB his 1st year. Grooming someone for year 3. I wouldn’t mind the 3 win season in year 1 if it was a FR QB taking his bumps and gaining experience. Now were going to break in a new QB whether it’s Ikaika Woolsey or a mid year transfer.

I think it all matters with how the team looks in general. If they win only four games but are not getting blown out in any games and keeping it close and competitive, then I think it will be easier for people to buy in. That is tough though since there has only been four wins total in the past three years and for fans standards, four wins is nothing to be happy about.
I see Hawaii having a chance to win 5 games but I am always hopeful for more.

137. Wittek hasn’t done a thing yet in D1 football if that’s who you are referring to. I don’t want to count him out but so far, he is a big, strong arm QB, who isn’t very accurate and takes too long to make decisions. I think Hawaii sacked him 2 times in his limited playing time against us. He played absolutely horrible against Georgia Tech in the bowl game with Marquis Lee and Robert Woods to throw to.
He has physical tools. Not sure he has the intangibles to be a good D1 QB.
I’m not worried about the offense, we have experienced receiver’s, running back’s and an Offensive line returning. Chow can make a Pop Warner QB into a star and that’s no disrespect to any QB he’s coached.

That would definitely be in my top two. Especially with the way it ended in the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs and @ Alabama who was the favorite to win it all. I was watching it at home and was pretty much speechless when it happened. It happened so quick I had to blink a few times to see if it was actually real. It was really fun though to see all those Bama fans devastated.

Long Time UH Fan was everyone’s grandfather and walked us down memory lane. las vegas/rasu begasu was a sumotori bull in the china shop but a great karaoke singer and party host. You know what is scary for our softball wahines is their pitching is not holding up. Morales walked nine batters and she was replaced by the other pitcher who was not effective so Morales had to come in the game to finish. Coolen had Carlos warming up just in case.
Disappointing loss. It’s going to be a real tight tournament.

UH played defense well enough tonight but Arnold needs to be willing to risk playing someone else on the bench to hit threes when Neville’s is not falling. Shamburger’s shot has looked bad all season. Teams just need to slow down the game and zone out Hawaii cuz our guards don’t normally drive to basket and either create their own shots or dish off.
SteveM, Thanks for reminding me that it was gigi. She seem to be a polarizing person and seemed to be turned off by some of the negativity. We do need more females blogging to give the blog some balance. Hard to tell by blog name what gender everyone is unless you become familiar with them.

I talked to Chow today, and he was OK with the schedule. He liked the order of the CSU/SJSU road games because UH gets to come home between games. The concern is Rice, but instead of leaving on Thursday, the team likely will leave on Wednesday. It’s going to be weird having the season ending on the road. But, hey, Table Mountain Casino is only 40 minutes away.
No team likes to end its season on the road, but at least the schedule is out earlier than previous years and is pretty balanced for the warriors.

Truman, National Billiards was in a warehouse like building some place around Queen Street. I cannot remember because that place changed so much since the late 60s/early 70s. Lots of industrial buildings in the area. Might be closer to Restaurant Row area.

#209. Nevels was ok 3-6. Spearman has been in a shooting slump. He’s been scoring around the basket but can’t hit from the outside. They’re our two zone busters. Gib doesn’t have too many options for outside shooting other than Enos and Jawato.
That Mamadou is a freak 7’6″ with the wing span of a 8 footer. To be that tall with extra long arms is unfair. He discourages guards from driving in. Standhardinger had the best results taking it in the key. He made several assists off his drives.

The next closest guy was a guy named “Pedep” or something like that. I this k he was either from Wahiawa or Waipahu. “Aku” was another terrific shooter.

On the subject of great Hawai’i basketball players, the best I ever saw (and I saw Leroy Lutu, Dan Hale, Sam, and even played many pick-up games with all) the best pure guy that I saw, when I was still a kid was Ia Saipa’ia.
Some of my ohana, lived on Alexander Street by the old Lau Store (also around the block from Obama and Waipa Parker of KS fame) and use to take me to HS games. Damn the sole was smooth, played both inside and outside, and could shoot like he an Army marksman—he was uber impressive, and pretty underrated from the perspective of local HS lore.
