Watched the La Tech – Mississippi game after the Coach Mack Show last night. That young La Tech QB is a wonder. Warriors need to bring their best to Ruston.

After seeing the Mack Show, I remembered what impressed me about Jackson’s catch and run early on. It was the way he ran over that one defender. The guy hit Jackson with a hard, clean, one-on-one shot and bounced to the ground. Jackson just kept rolling to the end zone. Reminded me of the way A. Green, Nasti and Regan just kept blowin’ defenders up in seasons past.

If he’s not the guy, then buy him out now and name a successor already.

Because if he is your guy still, then by waiting until at least January, you’ve hurt recruiting for no reason.

This is a great point by ST. I saw the article by Ferd about how Mack wanted $900k but UH wanted the salary to be something like $600k. Today’s article seems to indicate that Mack is now asking for $850k ($250k cut from $1.1 mil) but UH rejected that.

If Upper Campus wants to wait until at least January to seriously negotiate, they are willing to throw away an ENTIRE recruiting class for UH. That will significantly hamper *any* coach at UH, whether that is Mack or someone else they want to hire. What recruit with options is going to commit to UH when he doesn’t know who will be the head coach when he shows up?

So, UH might save some money by dragging this out and getting Mack to lower his salary request, but the future success (and $$$) that UH gets will be hurt by UH flushing the 2012 recruiting class away. UH should speed up the negotiation process and resolve this already!

Of course, there are 2 practical reasons why UH won’t take ST’s advice:

1. The flawed contract that Hinshaw gave Mack doesn’t have a buyout clause. UH probably doesn’t want to eat the $1.1 mil for next year and whatever prorated portion is left for this year. New Mexico and Colorado are good examples of what happens when Universities are too cheap to buyout coaches that they plan to get rid of…New Mexico got lucky with the “recruit” getting a DUI while driving the head coach’s car so they may not have to eat the rest of the contract.

2. The Warriors performed too well last season for UH to buy out Mack without a big PR disaster. The Warriors should still win 9+ games this season, so they cannot just try to get the public to accept that he costs too much when he’s agreed to take a pay cut from his current (way over market value) contract.

Looks like the MWC’s commissioner is publicly stating that they will not keep Air Force’s nonrevenue sports if Air Force joins the Big East for football-only. That sure sounds like an indication that Air Force to the Big East for football-only is well past the rumor stage.

Thompson also told me the possibility of Air Force taking football to Big East and keeping other sports in MWC was “not happening.”

The MWC and CUSA are going to discuss their merger today…the MWC’s commissioner is publicly talking about that now so it is way beyond the rumor stage. Normally things aren’t admitted publicly unless negotiations are well along.

My guess is that the WAC would take Air Force’s nonrevenue sports. Part of that would be to hurt the MWC and part of that is that the WAC might want the Air Force following for the next TV deal.

It is also possible that the Big East ups their offer to a full membership, just like how TCU went from football-only to getting a full membership offer from the Big East.

Very disheartening to hear Mac’s contract talks have been put off till the end of the season,I had hope the powers that be would have learned from the last contract negotiation fiasco apparently not….

In college football, (coaching speculations, conference alignments, recruiting, etc), as in life today with the economy in flux, changes in social interaction and in politics, one never knows what will happen until it does happen. Then there will be changes once again.

I can’t imagine that UHAD/UH/Boosters want someone different leading the program at this time.

I am hoping they can seal this deal by the 2nd/3rd game in the WAC schedule.

Lets just ask T. Boone Pickens or Mark Cuban what we should do.

This is not possible. There is no way to plan to replace Mack without buying out his contract without killing recruiting classes. If the UH Admin waits until the end of the contract, that will kill both the 2012 and 2013 recruiting classes. If they wait until after this football season (as apparently is the plan) they are throwing away at least the 2012 recruiting class.

Note that schools are already finishing up their 2012 recruiting classes and some 2013 recruits have already given their commits. All schools recruiting against UH will point out that Mack’s contract expires after next season and UH is publicly saying that they have no agreement with Mack to keep him around after that.

Now’s the time to back Mack I’m willing to donate $500 towards his salary,We as a program cannot afford to go backwards with so much invested getting into the MWC,If we lose in the MWC the fan base like usual will dissapear leaving the program to pick up the slack for travel subsidies,How long can Hawaii sustain a possible loss in revenue if this were to happen?

i agree contract negotiations should not wait. that being said i don’t think coach Mack’s salary should be in excess of 1 mil. too often he speaks of mistakes that are correctable, too often is the team consistently inconsistent. this goes back since his first year of taking over the reigns.

“correctable mistakes”, now that is an understatement. would be funny if a coach says, “yeah, we made mistakes but we ain’t gonna correct them.”

If adding those schools would automatically make their BCS numbers higher than the MWC, they should go ahead and add them today.

Why wait? Big LEast trying to poach the Big 12? SEC? NFL?

The FACT is that the Big East teams are being found attractive enough for the top conferences. This is similar to the Pac-12 taking Utah and the Big East taking TCU. Did losing those teams mean that the MWC was done? Ponder that.

The FACT is that any MWC or CUSA school would happily accept an invitation to the ACC, SEC, Big 10, Pac-12, or Big 12. Do you deny that? The FACT is that only the Big East schools are being found attractive enough to move up right now as is rumored, which shows the value of teams in that conference.

The FACT is that Navy’s head of Athletics just said last week that they cannot remain indy much longer and they are looking to join a conference. And they are apparently only talking with the Big East.

The FACT is that East Carolina just applied for the Big East, an example of how they are still considered a step up from a non-AQ conference.

The FACT is that Big East schools all agreed to a $5 mil buyout and a *27-month* notification requirement. So, the Big East isn’t going away anytime soon. That gives them more than enough time to rebuild if they are raided.

The FACT is that the Big East was raised once before, with the ACC being even more brutal to them than the MWC was to the WAC. And the FACT is that they survived and was #2 in BCS points just 3 years ago.

So, you can LYAO all you want…but the facts you are relying on don’t seem so strong to me.

There is a 27-month exit clause that all Big East teams have agreed to. When conferences like the ACC look to take Big East teams they agree to wait several years for the transfer of teams. *No* other conference has such a long exit clause.

Given that fact, what is the hurry for the Big East?

#111 Don Weir…Good questions. UH has got to find a way to get in touch with and secure/expand their fan base both at home and on the mainland. They need to,as you’ve said, “…make the UH Football experience inclusive for all of the former players/graduates/fans on the mainland…” If they are able to do that and drum up that kind of support, they can get a viable funding source out of that. I mean, I am of the belief that every little bit helps. No matter if it’s a $5 donation or $1,000 donation. I mean, sure, it would be nice to have a $200 million donation from someone like T. Boone Pickens….but we aren’t going to get that so….at least not in the near future.

Just like we’ve done in the past, the Tsaikos will continue to support the athletic programs. If our small group can do what we’ve done for UHAD, think if everyone chipped in fans/former players/students/alumni/community and worked together, it would be a good thing and everyone would feel invested in the University. The question is, how do we do that? Does Na Koa have any ideas on building fan support both at home and on the mainland??? Just curious. Thanks.

#111 – Don – there you go talking common sense, when it comes to upper campus common sense goes out the window, IMHO when upper campus looks at athletics all it sees is a waste of money that could be going to the academics salaries, everyone knows that athletics shouldn’t be part of the college.

Being either AQ qualified or not has absolutely nothing to do with how much money is made. AQ is another fictitious smoke and mirror tier set up to justify the gap between the haves and have nots. Be honest, if the MWC was suddenly AQ’d tomorrow, is ESPN or any other network required to shell out the millions, if not billions?

Nope!

The TRUE FACT is pure simple: Demographics.

No matter how good the brand of football is played in the MWC or how qualified we are, there’s just not enough eyeballs watching in these regions.

I promise, if Hawaii were to demonstrate we had over a billion people following UH sports all across Asia, we’d have our own 24 hour ESPN studio in 47 different languages set up in Manoa yesterday. The SEC would be courting us and saying, “Why not! Heck, ‘yall part of the United States, right?”

We have absolutely no control over who goes where. So why worry about it! What should concern everyone is why is Hawaii sitting around letting others control their destiny. Hawaii needs to be proactive. Take control of what they can change for themselves. Plan ahead. Create opportunities and not wait for them to arise!

Go across Europe and ask any prospective college student if they could study abroad in paradise where would they go? The number 1 answer?

Ok this would be my plan if I was calling the shots, 3 year contract extension for Mack at 700,000 with the agreement he retires after the third year, take the left over 300,000 and give the assistants more, I would give Rolo the word that he will take over the Head Coach’s job when Mack retires, with a five year contract starting at 400,000 for the first year with incentives for the for the next four capped at 700,000, use the monies between the 400,000 and the million we now spend to find or keep the assistant coaches that he wants.

What is “Lisa’s House”? A restaurant? A bar? Someone’s residence? What community is it located? What are the nearby highways/freeways or main streets?

Although APEC officially starts on Sunday evening, November 13, with a reception, the heightened security regulations will be in effect at least five days earlier. I am going through a training to be an Official Observer during mid-October.

Might just be me but I think Rolo is going to have to up his game when it comes to talking to the public. I find his interviews slow paced and on the edge of boring with little information disseminated. Regardless how you feel about him Rich Miano gets me pumped up for the season or the game. He is articulate, he is motivating and I feel I learn something with each interview.

I don’t think Rolo or Aranda are ready for the HC job. They don’t have enough connections outside of the Warrior program to properly staff and recruit. They may need to do the circuit, first. Otherwise, the program will slowly bleed away.

Stakeholders working together for the singular purpose of keeping athletics part of the university would be able to come up with something viable- at least for the next 5 years.

As is the case with all systems that are reeling in the face of global change, a greater call to unity is required.

One day very soon, the 100th monkey will realize that a formal college degree is not worth sacrificing home and hearth for…

On that day, the University needs to be prepared to come up with another system to provide meaningful education – or go the way of bookstores, post offices and NCLB… when the $$$ dries up.

Garret and IWWTHM, I think both of you are potentially right about the Big East. It just depends on what the other conferences do.

If the ACC stays at 14, the SEC stays at 13 and the Big 12 stays at 10, the Big East will have enough remaining schools to rebuild and retain an AQ bid.

However if the ACC goes to 16 with UConn and Rutgers, the SEC goes to 14 with Missouri, and the Big 12 goes to 12 with TCU, BYU, Louisville and WVU, the Big East will be down to Cincinnati and USF in football. At that point I could see those two schools returning to CUSA in hopes that a CUSA 14 could beat out an MWC 10 for the Big East’s AQ bid.

In expansion news you probably don’t care about, I’m hearing San Jose State wants to get in the Sun Belt.

My guess is that this would mean that the SJSU would be in the Sun Belt for football-only and would put the rest of their teams in the Big West. The Big West’s commissioner sure seemed to encourage SJSU to join the Big West last year.

I’m just saying… no money no program.. the way it is set up, to keep the revenue programs going we need to keep many if not all of the other programs, too and THAT tends to wring the program dry in terms of $$. Negotiation isn’t always easy. In times of plenty, that’s not an issue.. but with this flat economy, all the BCS conference re-alignments, the rising costs (50% inflation in the past few years) and no end in sight of the burgeoning costs of running the athletic program, we need to find some form of respite or possibly lose more than we bargained for. Reciprocity should be tied into these agreements so that when the economy uprights itself the monies that were lost in one direction will be compounded back in that direction as to provide a greater boost for these programs.

I’m not against Title IX, I believe it’s a good thing, but I’d hate to see some programs cut just to adhere to it’s principles and to make the budget work. Or should they simply take away scholarshps from these men and women sports unilaterally while still trying to compete? Can that work?

There will be many changes coming down the road over the next nine years here in Hawai`i – two new US Senators, two new members in the US House of Representatives, a new UH System President, a new Chancellor at Manoa, new legislative leadership, and a new governor.

The average age of most of the people who are getting ready to step into these positions will be sigificantly under the age of 50 so what they will be doing will have an impact on Hawai’i for next 20 years.

Outside the University Sytem, contact key legislators who are not just UH advocates but also in power positions to make a difference. The list is relatively short: State Senators Jill Tokuda, David Ige, Shan Tsutsui, Donna Nercado Kim, Clayton Hee, and Carol Fukunaga; State Representatives Scott Nishimoto, Marcus Oshiro, Calvin Say, and Isaac Choy. There are several other legislators who can provide support behind the scenes so if you want some of their names, just ask me at a T-Event.

Let’s be really clear about one thing: Virginia Hinshaw is not being fired. Her contract is up next July and she is going back into academic research at the John A Burns School of Medicine after a semester’s sabbatical. By the time she goes back into academia, she will be in her late 60s – and, while that is not old, I doubt seriously if any of the people who regularly post on this blog, would like to have a highly-stressful job in any field at that age.

If there was fiscal responsibility, there would be greater transparency in the upper campus dealings. This self-autonomy biz with UH isn’t all that successful. They estimate an additional Billion dollars in funding is needed by 2020… probably much sooner than that they way the economy has been floundering. Regardless of that forecast they put aside monies to build that Med school and contnue to let the main campus flounder in disrepair. It’s like the Marcos philosophy of general economics… rulers get paid well… and to show that we are spending money wisely, we will put up a nice facade….

Garret, one other thing I forgot to mention. To continue being an FBS conference under NCAA rules, the Big East would need a minimum of eight football-playing members that ALSO play basketball and other sports in the Big East. So, the academies could be brought in for football only, but they would have to be added as the ninth or tenth or eleventh football members; a Big East rebuilding from just two or three remaining football schools would have no choice but to add five or six CUSA members first (also Temple could fill one of those slots).

Now, would the Big East basketball schools go along with that? Would sharing their basketball credits with that many newbies be palatable? Would the new additions bring enough incremental value to make rebuilding in football worthwhile? I think the odds aren’t good.

You brought up the alternative of the Big East splitting into football and non-football conferences, and if that happened I agree the Big East football conference would retain its AQ bid, at least until the end of the current evaluation period. One problem with that scenario is that the resulting breakaway football conference would technically be a new NCAA Division 1 all-sports conference. And under the NCAA continuity rule, a new Division 1 conference has to wait eight years for a basketball auto bid. That may not be a show-stopper — I imagine a CUSA school would give up being in a basketball auto bid conference to attain AQ status — but would it do so knowing that it could very well lose AQ status in just a few years?

A second problem with that scenario is that the members of the new Big East football conference wouldn’t get any of the basketball revenue earned by the Big East basketball conference members. Their main source of revenue would be a new Big East football conference TV contract. And if the new Big East football conference is mainly comprised of CUSA retreads, why would any network give it a much larger TV contract than CUSA’s?

I still come back around to thinking that if the Big East football loses all but a couple of football schools, there’s a good chance they won’t be able to rebuild the Big East as a football conference, and instead will have to seek refuge in CUSA. And that concerns me because a 14-member CUSA with Cincinnati and USF may be better-positioned to inherit the Big East’s AQ bid than a 10-member MWC.

Average a 5 and 3 record in the WAC. Good 5 and 3 in 2008, struggled in 2009 with a 3 and 5 record in the WAC. Had some real good wins in the WAC in 2011 over Fresno, LaTech, and Nevada to go 7 and 1 in conference play.

As I understand it, sand volleyball was a sport added or else it would be used against UH in recruiting if it didn’t add it.

To be used against UH recruiting… hmm guess the sand game is very big with the indoor students Shoji and Co are going after? Jane Croson style indoor is being constantly referred towards her sand game and read somewhere that the fact that UH is getting sand volleyball is a big or supposedly a big reason why we landed the “blue chipper”.

Personally I still think that a joint-effort with the HTA and UH athletics with the use of a MAJESTIC beachfront for all of UH’s sand volleyball games is the best backdrop in the country.

Kinda funny to tune in to watch University of HAWAII Sand Volleyball and you see a concrete background with a man-made court on campus. BEACHES GALORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So if the MWC and CUSA combine, wouldn’t the “prize” be split more ways? And if some teams get disgruntled, will they have a secret meeting in a bathroom and split? Who do you think will be left out? They would have to secure a huge TV contract for it to be profitable. Maybe that would be a good time for the combined conference to have 1 very late game (UH could be 1 team) on national TV in addition to a few in “normal” time slots. As newcomer to the MWC I don’t think that UH could make too much noise and just have to go with the flow. We need to figure out ways to protect ourselves within a conference.

as an early on critic of Mac I think he is doing an amazing job. I dont feel like he is milking it and is worth his salary. The guy won a WAC Championship, is pre-seaon picked to win it again.. looking at the big picture, you wanna play ball with the big boys you aint gonna do it successfully on a $500k salary. not in todays crazy economics in NCAA athletics. If your goal is to win conference championships, we’re doing it. Stay the course. Stomach the salaries that get you there and dont head backwards. I say take on the pain, get creative and keep on track.

Having said that, to Mac’s demise, he has done such a wonderful job at delegation that we might not need him.. just saying..

Those are good issued and attendance numbers in 2010. Suffice to say, it looks like Coach Mack has earned his salary considering the panic that JJ’s departure created. In 2008, had Mack not stayed on and another coach was hired that late into the post season… we may have never made a Bowl in 2008, fans would have been even more disgruntled… season ticket sales would have continued to plummet and the RnS would have been a thing of the past. Mack, to me, has kept that dream of a repeat 2007 alive, and that will be key for us in the MWC.

This is one of the reasons why extending coach Mack’s contract is a good idea.

Simply not being satisfied with someone isn’t a plan. Though I highly doubt UHAD or upper campus is unsatisfied with Mack.

For Coach Mack to be willing to take a 25%+ cut in pay is commendable. UH needs to bargain in good faith. One of the things you take from Mack is that he is genuine. He may not be the best public speaker or Chris Peterson on the football field, but he is a person I think we can trust. If he says he wants to be here and wants to make the contract work, I think its in UH’s interest to step up as well.

And even if UH wanted a change, who makes the short list?

ST – In all the talks between UH and the MWC, do they take into consideration the amount of basketball games in the pay per view package and discount the amount collected by Oceanic? It seems that I never hear anything about a discounted amount when they talk about the money colleted for pay per view.

…Success for the football team requires stability in its coaching staff. Mac is the father/uncle/grandfather figure which fits Hawai`i well. Aranda, Rolo and younger coaches are the future and energy and they must be kept at all costs. The important thing to remember is that success begins with little things, like shower soap. Remember?

ST, a two year extension with a planned succession plan with a predetermined successor makes sense. Who would a logical successor be?

The BOR directed JD to run the athletic like a business. They clearly forgot to send the memo to themselves.

Rolo and Aranda could junk-an-a-po and I bet we don’t see too much of a drop off.. But Rolo’s top rated O in country. if I were an agent I’d pick him to be my client.

Mack made himself sort of like an arbitrator between the coaching staff. Delegate authority but when questions or disagreement arises and a decision has to be made, it’s up to him to make the final decision. That might be really missed when one of the two rises to the top.

Two or three more solid years of recruiting and this program could really do wonders. We’ve come to expect 8 or more wins each season even when we have only two starters on Offense… soon it could be nine.. ten.. and more. That higher level of expectation is a reflection of the Coaching staff.

Anyway.. time for me to get some shut eye.. night folks!

Mack is at the stage of his career, when he doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone but himself. He has shown, that he is a capable coach. He is not averse to working with previous coaches in order to move the program forward. From my observations, it is not an ego thing it is a continuum thing. Ironically, when he was hired; I thought he would be either revolutionary, or very conservative. However in watching his decisions in the recent past I have seen:

His ability to maintain and encourage his younger coaches.

Bring back former head coaches, to help the program.

Speak plainly.

Care for the players.

But most of all, show respect.

I truly believe, in order to move forward, we need Mack more; than he needs UH.

Why? Lack of ego.

Thank you all for keeping Mr. Kymry in your thoughts… it’s a very important time for them.

Please, UH. This is the time to enable our coaches to concentrate on the work at hand by giving them some job security. Two years is a good time for everyone. Two years will make a good transition if change is coming. Please do this for the benefit of all. Do this for yourselves.

so, i can see why there is concern by the upper and lower campus regarding mack’s contract extension or lack of.

there’s been a few public appearances that went awry and some near misses. a warning in fact was served to the hc. mack has shown recently his displeasure towards all the nick picking in a rather visible form these days during his public appearances. he has also taken it out on the press in a rather harsh manner. he needs to be mindful of the gag order placed upon him early in his tenure or he could by his own accord end the negotiations by cause.

the coach should also be mindful that he doesn’t have the greatest bargaining power either. in three seasons there has been only one winning season. the first two ending at 7-7, 6-7, before last years double digit wins.

attendance is down. attendance is the prime income for this business. a ceo never gets awarded when sales are down.

we have not faired well in nationally televised broadcasts. we are 0 for in bowl games. probably the one most significant game has turned in to a debacle twice now. how important is the season ending bowl game to season ticket sales and post season hype? don’t blame it on the finals, it is after all a part of the day in the life of a college student.

However, despite what the BCS says about the Big Least’s AQ status, I find it absurd that they may keep that status, if they lose recognition as being an FBS conference to begin with. We’ll see how this all plays out.
