Keeping up with Genta

genta1
The past couple days, a video crew from Japan’s NHK network has followed around running back Genta Ito for a documentary.

As the NCAA’s only current Japan-raised football player, Ito has attracted a small international following.

“It shows that people back (in Japan) are very proud of his accomplishments,” head coach Nick Rolovich said. “Hopefully, that leads to more Hawaii fans in Japan and more football fans in Japan.”

While Ito could help in marketing, his value is as a tenacious player on scout team. Ito is redshirting this season.

“I love him,” Rolovich said. “I’m glad he’s here. He makes us better. Every week there’s talk about him giving great effort and great looks (in practices).”

Slotback Makoa Camanse-Stevens said: “He brings that samurai discipline.”

The Warriors had an upbeat practice this morning. In the 2-minute drill, wideout Keelan Ewaliko caught a 35-yard scoring pass from Dru Brown. Running back Steven Lakalaka also scored on a 25-yard run up the gut.

Here is his highlight video from Jr. College:
Pretty impressive. And he runs well on blue turf, too.
Keeps on running after first and second hits.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
Maybe one day we will get sumotori types out of Japan to become OL and DL for Warriors. Can you imagine Akebono, Konishki, Musashimaru, and Takamiyama blocking for our QB? The Japanese equivalents may be Taiho, Chiyonofuji, Takanohana and Wakanohana. Then again, maybe it won’t work as they would be penalized for “holding”.

    Dave,
I think Chiyonofuji would have been an all-time great had he played football. I remember watching him as a kid and being so mad that he would beat the local boys and always wondered why he was the only muscular sumo wrestler around…

Here’s to playing Warrior all day long against BSU! I sure hope we get them running sideline to sideline with the run game and attacking deep with the pass. Huddle on the ballcarrier on D! GoWarriors!

Warriors need to be physical up front tomorrow and win LOS. Defense cant fall for the sneaky option passes QB throwback Statue of Liberty etc. A tough physical effort they have more than a fair chance. Don’t be surprised at good KO return either! GoWarriors!!!!!
