the transition has been great.. with coach Ron and Stutz, they have helped me to understand the offense alot more.. also my fellow players haved helped alot too..

What was the main factor that prompted you to come back home? I was a bit disappointed at first when you chose to go to the Air Force Academy, so now it’s all good that you came home and transferred to UH.

In work outs and no doubt many discussions among yourselves, do you feel this years offense will be as productive as last year?

You’re from wahiawa, just wondering if you used to play bball out in whitmore village also…i might have played against you a couple times, if that was you, you are damn quick!

Which quarterback so far have you clicked with in terms of running plays and being on the same page? (I know it’s early, but sometimes you can get a feel, even from just unsupervised workouts.)

so far he hasn’t really talked to me about running the ball.. i believe the main thing he wants me to do is get comfortable with the slot position.. i also believe that the guys in the running back position now will get the job done..

Kealoha- After the Sugar Bowl experience, do you feel better prepared for what you will face in the Swamp- and are there any special ways you have been preparing for that game? We’ll be there to cheer, btw !

haha thats a first… Coach Jones was a man of few words… i feel like him leaving was something for the players in this program… like many others, he felt there was things that needed to be done and done quick.. he put this program in the spotlight for everyone to see.. and i’m thankful Coach Mac took the job to continue what he started

first is to take care of my body and stay injury free..

i believe that the toughest thing will be the heat.. however, in the next few weeks, Coach Mac will get us into the best shapes of our lives.. by the time Florida comes, we should be mentally and physically ready for anything.. we just have the confidence in ourselves that we can play with the best in the nation..

i believe playing a team like Georgia taught us alot about ourselves.. although we were at the top of the WAC, it taught us that you have to come out and play like it was your last every game.. also when things seem perfect, there is always room for improvementt and you should never be satisfied..

i never got an accurate time at it… my first year, Coach Mel didn’t believe his watch so i had to run it 2 more times…

this year i was ready than ever… however, it was stopped due to the fact that people were getting hurt… like all of you, i am curious to know

Good luck this year Kealoha! Garrans you going be beastin at the slot for years to come. I think it was a good move for you with your fluid running style and agility, it’ll give you more room to run and make plays. Speaking of Kickers from Temecula…when I asked Garret about it in a previous blog I thought it was a kid who attended Dan Kelly’s HS. Obviously it’s not, but there is a K from Dan Kelly’s HS that is a pretty good kicker. A kid named Colin Yost. He’s attended kicking combines and has faired pretty well at each. Good size at 6’3″ 195lbs. and a pretty strong leg. Not sure if he’s been offered to play somewhere but he seems like D1 potential…

Thank you to Kealoha for the excellent chat! He represented the Warriors well in the chat and did a great job on the field last season. I look for him to have an excellent career as a slot WR–he’s deadly in the open field and the offense has plays that can get him the ball with room to make something happen.

Some notes on today’s Dolphins practice.

Kircus is zooming up the depth chart, while my favorite rook Davone Bess finally dropped a pass today.

In the FB battle, Boomer Grigsby continues to display much better hands than Reagan Mauia when thrown to in the flat.

The Dolphins will have no team banquet and will not choose an MVP from last season.

The Dolphins confirmed that there would be no team banquet this year and for the first time in team history the team MVP award was listed as, ‘vacant.’

The banquet is usually used as in inspiration to the next year’s team, and several awards are handed out, and a video of highlights of the preseason are shown.

Obviously, a 1-15 team has far more lowlights than highlights.

Miami’s management isn’t happy with their WR situation and they apparently are adding Terry Glenn.

Also, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram cites two sources in reporting that ex-Cowboys receiver Terry Glenn is “expected” to sign with Miami.

Signing Glenn, waived Friday and a free agent, would be a low-risk Band-Aid on a thinness at the Dolphins’ wideout spot, although it hardly is in keeping with Miami’s rebuilding motif to sign a 34-year-old receiver coming off a season lost almost entirely to a knee injury.

Bottom line? Solid move. You get, for very little, a guy with four 1,000-yard seasons including back-to-backers in 2005-06. Click here to review Glenn’s year-by-year and career stats.

The signing would be predictable because Dolphins major domo Bill Parcells previously coached Glenn in both New England and Dallas.

No problem with the joke. I do hope that those who suffered some damage (like Ronnie’s brother) are fine and that their losses were minimal. I have other friends near the epicenter who had some things fall to the ground, but no major damage.

The difference between a 5.4 and a 7.4 is 100 times the power. When I worked for JPL between 91-94 we had 2 earthquakes that were above 7…those were *really* crazy to live through. This one was just some minor swaying so I figured it was far away from us and wasn’t that big. When I checked online it seemed that the earthquake’s damage was not too bad.

This website updated the preseason predictions for each conference. Looking at UH’s nonconference opponents:

Aside from Lindy, Cincinnati is predicted to finish 4th or 5th in the Big East.

Oregon State is picked to finish 5th in the Pac-10.

Florida is picked to finish either 1st or 2nd in the SEC (with Georgia either 1st or 2nd).

Thankfully, San Diego is *not* on a fault line. When I lived in LA, nobody would sell me earthquake insurance for any reasonable price. In San Diego I have insurance companies contacting me to ask me to buy earthquake insurance from them, and they ask for well under 10% of what I was quoted when I lived in LA.

This site picks Cinci to finish at #23 in the country. Reading the full analysis I think they are assuming that Cinci beats UH.

Sixth in the Big East? Really? I can only assume the prognostoscenti is reacting to Ben Mauk’s pending ascension to the peak of Mount Sinai, or whatever, and no doubt the opinions would be more optimistic if the school’s single-season passing leader gets his sixth year between now and the end of August. Even if he doesn’t, though, UC has a fine option in Notre Dame refugee Demetrius Jones, who was too hyped coming out of high school to let his two series’ worth of halfhearted spread option against Georgia Tech cloud his potential in Brian Kelly’s offense, which has had a hell of a three-year run — unless, I guess, you think setting single-season records at two different schools while leading both to banner seasons (Central Michigan won the MAC championship in 2006 and ten games for the first time since 1979; last year, Cincinnati finished in the final polls for the first time ever in Kelly’s first go-round) is some kind of happy accident. Jones is more athletic than Mauk or CMU’s Dan LeFevour, and has four receivers back who combined for 26 touchdowns last year. The defense has all-Big East-caliber players on the interior line (Terrill Byrd), linebacker (Corey Smith) and at corner, where Mike Mickens is consistently listed among the best cover guys in the country, with DeAngelo Smith not far behind. Given Jones’ alleged physical ability and Kelly’s recent track record with multi-faceted quarterbacks, I’m not sure what the Bearcats are supposed to be missing that makes them significantly removed from last year’s ten-game winner.

Interesting how so many newspaper writers are leaving the print world and taking jobs with Rivals or ESPN or other alternatives.

All of which brings us to 2008, and a fascinating exodus that’s occurring just under the radar in the sportswriting world. As print newspapers become less and less relevant (and far less profitable), more and more top talents are jumping off the sinking ship to ply their trades online. In blog parlance, it’s called “taking the Boeing,” a phrase coined by uber-blogger Glenn Reynolds when ace political writer Mickey Kaus agreed to bring his hugely-popular Kausfiles blog under the Slate.com umbrella (Slate being owned by Microsoft, which shares its home city of Seattle with aircraft behemoth Boeing–it’s a stretch as a joke, but it works).

Fort Worth Star-Telegram living legend Wendell Barnhouse recently hung up his newspaper spurs to become the Big 12 Conference’s online reporter. Under less voluntary circumstances, Jay Christensen (who wrote the blurb about Barnhouse linked just above), was recently axed thanks to the floundering LA Times’ efforts at cost cutting. Christensen’s previously-anonymous blog The Wizard of Odds was (and is) among the very best college football sites out there, and I’m betting that Jay will go a lot farther online than he would have in the stratified world of big-newspaper sportswriting.

Even when people don’t leave their big-media home bases, they’re finding more readers by going online.

Readers are leaving newspapers far faster than the better writers. I remember hearing my dad gripe about the state of the Montgomery Advertiser about a decade ago. Gannett had bought out what was up until that point the best paper in the state, and their low salaries and Mickey Mouse editorial template quickly ran off everybody with any smidgen of talent. “What can you do?” he asked me rhetorically. “You have to get a paper, and even this garbage is the best one around here.”

Now Dad has an iBook with a wireless hookup, and every newspaper in the world is as close as his end table. He used to get three daily papers while I was growing up; now he gets one, and I’ll bet you he won’t renew it the next time a bill arrives.

Its been a while since I last posted (months). Been really busy. Moved from Denver to Seattle last month. Living with the inlaws while looking for a new place. Wife and I just got back from Hawaii a couple of weeks ago after my family had a reunion there. I had hoped for more vacationing time than family obligation time while I was off of work for that period. Oh well. Looking forward to the season.

I was hoping to drive to the Oregon State game but UH is out of tix. Would anyone be able to provide me with information on how to get seats in the Hawaii section? Any leads would be helpful.

Norm Chow is guaranteed $1.24 mil over 3 years from UCLA and still will be getting $1 mil per year for the next 2 years from the Titans. They are backloading Norm’s 3-year deal and putting money into categories other than salary because Norm’s salary over the next 2 years will be deducted from what the Titans owe him. So, if you count the money from the Titans, the “talent fee”, and the pro-rated portion of his retention bonus, Norm will be making more than Mack for the next 2 years.

Offensive coordinator Norm Chow is guaranteed $1.24 million in a backloaded three-year deal with UCLA, in the crowning stroke of creative hiring by coach Rick Neuheisel, who was able to put together an impressive staff on basically the same budget as former coach Karl Dorrell’s last staff.

Neuheisel’s staff is guaranteed $1,705,000. Dorrell’s final staff was paid $1,620,000.

Neuheisel’s big coup was landing Chow, and it took creativity to make the contract work.

According to documents obtained by the Daily News, Chow has a base salary of $250,000 per season. He will receive a talent fee of $50,000 in each of the first two years of the contact, and $140,000 in the final year.

If Chow remains with the Bruins for a third year, he will earn a $250,000 retention bonus, which becomes payable when he takes part in UCLA’s first spring practice for the 2010 season.

The deal is backloaded because Chow’s contract with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, who fired him in the offseason, calls for him to be paid $1 million in each of the next two years.

Just finished catching up on 6 days worth of blog reading. Went to Maui on the SuperSloop Thurs and came back last night. Had a blast. Played tourii and splurged for a night at the Grand Wailea. Got to work this morning and by 8 am had 3 more tasks to do in addition to the uku million I already had. Welcome back!!!

My daughter’s birthday is next week. 13! 😯 Hubby, however, won’t be here to celebrate. He’s heading off to SD for a conference.

Anyways, way off topic… got a couple of questions for the worldly Tsaiko geniuses out there.
1) Kid wants to go parasailing for her bday. Any suggestions?
2) Am craving good tempura. Any suggestions for a place that’s reasonably priced, either in town, on the east or Windward sides?

There were some very personal reasons why I wanted a coaching job.
One, the best coaches were teachers. They could explain almost everthing you asked and treated you well. Two, these coaches were fair, honest, and sincere. Politics never came into coaching. I repeat, politics never came into coaching. And the three of us always shot straight.

And during those six years I proved it I got coaching talent.

And today, there are a bunch of Warrior Coaches who are teachers first.
And some I met are good people, too.

Did another run through the Swamp lands. Very boring blogs compared to Tsaikoland.

In a couple of lengthy season predictions threads of which http://www.gatorcountry.com/swampgas/showthread.php?t=60593 is a good example, gator fans are very unconcerned about their chances against Hawaii with most sure they will hold us to less than 21 points and lay 50 to 60 points on us. There is some concern about Miami which Florida plays the week after us, but nobody is discussing our game as anything other than an “easy win.”
