Kapolei's Lopati commits to UH

Chad Lopati of Kapolei High School has accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors.
Lopati, who played defensive end at Kapolei, projects as a linebacker in college.
He’s 6 feet 2, and up to 245 pounds now. Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez timed Lopati running 40 yards in 4.6 seconds.
Lopati received offers from every Pac-10 school except USC.
His uncle is Keith “Junior” Lopati, the former UH running back.

Ray Hisatake, the No. 2 right guard, cut off his long hair.
Why?
“Obama said we needed a change,” Hisatake said, smiling.

Scout Bowl II is today at 8 a.m. The team led by John Estes and Solomon Elimimian is seeking a second victory this fall. What’s the purpose of agreeing to a rematch? “Dominance,” Estes said. Quarterback Jake Santos has a chance for a three-peat. He was the MVP of Scout Bowls this year and last year.

Hey, everybody loves a substitute teacher. Rich Miano’s 48-hour turn as head coach resulted in a short practice yesterday (they were done by 8:20).

* * *

Congrats to Stephen Mata‘utia and Krystal Hovious on the birth of their beautiful daughter.

Happy birthday wishes to Madison “Maddie” Hirata and Rona Chung (of Straub Hospital).

Watch out for the vog today.

Did Tyler make the most of his day by day time working out while the team was on the road?

That dang song from “Lolly Lolly get your adverbs here” was going off in my head all night.

  5. Garret November 13, 2008 6:10 am

Welcome to the Warriors Chad Lopati!

ST, if he’s 245 pounds now with his 4.6 speed, I’m guessing that he’ll eventually be moved to DE in Mac’s speed-oriented D. But the coaches would know best I guess…

  6. Garret November 13, 2008 6:11 am

    WassupDoc,

I’m so sorry to read about your latest incident! I really hope that your injuries heal quickly and that you get some rest.

  7. Garret November 13, 2008 6:15 am

SDSU is running a big deficit, but if they beat Utah on Saturday they could cost themselves $500k in BCS money. However, I don’t think that they have to worry about losing that money…SDSU’s football team is bad this year.

Call it crazy, but the San Diego State athletic department has about 500,000 reasons to root against its own football team Saturday at Qualcomm Stadium.

How much is $500,000 worth to SDSU?

Last fiscal year, the SDSU athletics budget fell short by about that same amount – about $600,000 – and needed to take that much extra from a university Sprint Nextel contract to make ends meet.

SDSU’s most lucrative football game each year, the Sky Show fireworks game, typically generates around $500,000 in ticket revenue. Other games typically generate only $200,000 to $300,000 in revenue.

    Good Morning Warrior Nation,

Let’s pull for a 3 game sweep to close the season and get ready for a bowl game.

I found an old online article (12/27/07) explaining the difference between the “Spread” offense and the “Run and Shoot.” In this feature Coach Mack is quoted from a defensive perspective. Pretty good reading.

BSU making the BCS would bring some money to SDSU, just like Utah making the BCS would bring some money to UH.

a BCS berth for Boise State of the WAC could mean $100,000 to $200,000 extra for MWC teams. Last year, WAC member Hawaii’s berth in the Sugar Bowl meant about the same for MWC members.

    7th?

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

Welcome to the Warrior ohana, Mr. Lopati!

Are the coaches recruiting a punter? Will it be a walk-on and we won’t know till Spring camp?

    Questions about other UH sports:
    1) Men’s bb team has no seniors. Will they have scholarships available for next year? Will they get back the one they lost due to the low APR? Will one of the current players be awarded the scholarships?

    2) Since the Wahine VB team win the WAC every year (and it’s expected to), do they receive something to commemorate the championship every year? If not, why not? If yes, then what do they receive? I don’t ever recall seeing anything about this.

  13. Garret November 13, 2008 6:23 am

Another article about Bess’ and Samson’s new teammate shows how players can make it to the NFL on special teams. Hopefully some of the Warriors on the borderline will make it to the NFL by their contribution to special teams.

What is worse than spending the 2007 NFL season with the 1-15 Dolphins?

How about spending the first two months of the 2008 season working the night shift at Arby’s, doing online classes and hoping you will get another NFL job?

Bryan was a Dolphin again with a specific mandate.

”No doubt, special teams,” Bryan said.

“The coach told me, the GM told me, the player personnel told me, the water person told me. Special teams, all out.”

”Was he really? Wow,” Dolphins wide receiver Greg Camarillo said when told Bryan had been fixing fast food until last week.

‘[Practice squad member] Anthony Armstrong was working two jobs — he played Arena [Football] and worked at a jewelry store. When he first came in here, we were talking about a TV show. And he was like, `Yeah, I never got to watch it. I was always at work.’ I’m thinking to myself, the TV show was like at 7 at night, what was he doing? It’s always a good story when somebody makes it out of that situation and makes it into the NFL.”

  17. Pride. November 13, 2008 6:30 am

We need to continue recruiting all of the local blue chippers. Continue emphasizing the advantages of playing at the University in front of family and friends. Don’t give up on anyone, just because they make commitments to mainland schools. Even though the chances are small that these young athletes would change their minds, that’s a chance that we need to take. Never quit on our local kids. We’re all one big family. We want all of the best ball players to stay home, but that won’t happen. We do need to make though sure that staying home is an option. We shouldn’t be dissing these young kids because they don’t have Hawaii as one of their choices. Always leave the door open for them to come back. After all, thay are all really just kids. Support them all the way, no matter what road they take.

  18. d1島 November 13, 2008 6:41 am

    Annoddah Dave,

Apparently there is a “sub-coalition” of the non-BCS conferences for revenue-sharing of BCS $

the good news for the MWC would be that the league still would get some revenue-sharing as part of an agreement with the four other Football Bowl Subdivision conferences that do not receive automatic berths in BCS games (the WAC, Sun Belt, Conference USA and Mid-American).

  19. Hank November 13, 2008 6:44 am

    ….greaaat news on Lopati….welcome Chad!….

  34. bulla November 13, 2008 7:04 am

    mahalo Pride,

it has been a GREAT RIDE so far, 4 years ago the same team had only 1 win with Coach Graybeal. this season, they are undefeated in conference play and sit atop the Big Sky Conference….planting seeds and watching them develop.

the beast is really enjoying this season, and he has some big shoes to fill but he is ready for the challenge. he still has a few more games to go and move up the Def Stats chart….but he is having an ‘impactful’ season. this winter it’ll be time to train, rest, and continue to develop to be the student-athlete he is destined to be.

    GO WILDCATS (X2)
    GO WARRIORS

Congrats to the Lopati family 🙂

    prayers to WD,

whew, slow down….what other signs are you looking for? you need rest and recuperation; UH athletics will survive while you recuperate, and will still be there when you are healthy.

    get some r&r!

  37. King Katonk November 13, 2008 7:09 am

    Master Tsai,

Speaking of “Conjunction Junction” I recently caught the original vocalist Jack Sheldon playing in a local jazz club. He is known for his great trumpet work and at age 77 is still going strong. Next time I catch one of his shows I’ll request that tune for you.

I may get bounced out of the club.

    p.s. – He also sang “I’m Just a Bill.”

  38. Garret November 13, 2008 7:12 am

    Pride,

I agree with the emphasis on local recruiting and stressing the value of playing in front of friends and family. The entire state rallied around Warriors last year during the Sugar Bowl run, and every potential recruit in Hawaii lived through that and saw the support in their community and how that season uplifted everyone. Last year was probably the biggest support that the UH football team ever got from Hawaii fans, and it showed the local players what is possible when playing for UH.

This is kind of like how UH got nearly all of the top local players to stay home after JJ’s first season at UH. A *lot* of people seem to have conveniently forgot that happened after the turnaround year.. That recruiting class set the stage for the recruiting class 3-4 years later that set up the Sugar Bowl run.

The key is how Mac is setting up relationships with all of the high schools and how the entire coaching staff is working on recruiting. The camps are also very, very important. All of this is critical for recruiting to be solid every year, so UH can avoid the dips like in some years.

  39. Garret November 13, 2008 7:14 am

    Annoddah Dave,

UH, just like any school in a non-BCS conference, gets money when any non-BCS conference team makes a BCS game. UH should get around $500k if BSU makes a BCS game, and around $150k if Utah (or Ball State) makes it. In a perfect world there would be 2 BCS buster teams this year, which would give UH a really nice financial boost!

  40. Garret November 13, 2008 7:16 am

Off to work now…I look forward to watching the Princess’ video and hearing about the Scout Bowl from the people that are lucky enough to watch it today.

  51. madeinhawaii November 13, 2008 8:17 am

Can’t believe we are spinning our wheels around recruiting as a heavy topic this early in the season. It’s a pretty good feeling. The coaches are taking advantage of the good feedback that the Warriors got last season and riding the JJ and Posse departure storm well.

Garret – that’s really interesting about non-BCS schools. I guess it pays to cheer them on so UH can get a little $$. I learned something today!

  56. takoboy November 13, 2008 8:25 am

    great morning all

wow, we could actually be done w/ recruiting in a couple weeks. great addition w/ lopati, hope and pray that the safety kid coach mack was talkin about is mckay from LBP, enhances our chances of keeping his 2 teammates. we got a lot of LB types in the fold, who moves to DE. coach cal must be salivating

  57. Buffoman November 13, 2008 8:28 am

I am so happy that we are becoming a Polynesian dominated operation, as well it should be, as we sit in the middle of that ethnic group. I read on another message board a disparaging note with regard to the fact that so many of Polynesian ancestry are on this team. Foolish remark!

These young men have proven to be excellent players, hard hitting, spirited team members. If the Warriors can be that team that fields the best of Polynesia, all the better. I’m sure when that happens, the NFL scouts will flock to the UH games as they too know, that Polynesians come to play!

  58. madeinhawaii November 13, 2008 8:28 am

I swear, last season, after the bowl was over.. what kept us all pumped up till spring practice were the recruiting announcements… now what are we gonna do when the Sheraton-Hawaii Bowl ends? Talk Boise-to-boys?

The missus got mad when the kids watched/listened to “Interjections” and I would playfully use a not so appropriate “mad” interjection. (so when you’re happy-hooray!, or sad – awww! or frightened – eeek! or mad – rats!) Kids thought it was funny. The wife didn’t. I countered that it WAS the correct use of an interjection. 🙂 I knew I did bad when the kids sang the F word instead of “Rats”. Who says “Rats!” nowdays anyway?

Very quick and explosive and showed signs of relentlessness. Awesome pickup for the Warriors. BTW, Hasiak looked good too and wish him the best on the continent.

  94. delbull November 13, 2008 11:23 am

People, is it just me or am I correct that it seems like we’re recruiting mostly defensive players. Is it because we have a defensive minded coach? Where’s the factory of offensive linemen that we used to have under June Jones? Where’s the speedy slotbacks and recievers we used to have also? Coach Mack wants to run the run and shoot still and that’s good. But it remains to be seen if the players he recruits can execute it as efficiently and the coaches he has now can teach it as proficiently as players and coaches we’ve had running it before. 300 yards a game passing was a piece of cake under Jones. Scoring 28 pts. per game was considered being held to 28 pts. I hope we can get back to those explosive offensive performances that we’re so used to seeing to go along with coach Mack’s awesome defensive schemes. We need good offensive recruits too to make this happen!

  95. Kazz November 13, 2008 11:23 am

    Colored contacts…

Wouldn’t it be a sight to see if someone has a green contact in one eye and a white contact in the other for the Cincy home game????

    Just thinking to myself.. hehehehehehehe

  100. SteveM November 13, 2008 11:28 am

    Good morning everyone!

Usual work day for me. Great news about Lopati…and why does “homey” this morning remind me of some one else? 😆

  101. homey November 13, 2008 11:30 am

d1 – not sure if it was him. I wanted to see a replay of the game but OC16 doesn’t have the video listed yet.

delbull – I guess the reason for D players being recruited is because the Warriors are losing many on the D side after this season. As far as O recruits there are some redshirts waiting in the wings and the current wideouts are still young. I’d still like to see a speedy RB get recruited and a few more O-linemen.

  102. (Jesse) James November 13, 2008 11:30 am

delbull…you’re right. I think we have had some good recruits on offense as well. We also have a number of greyshirts that were good offensive prospects. IMHO, you are right though in that we need to balance recruiting at the moment.

  103. Kazz November 13, 2008 11:32 am

    Delbull,

It does seem like that, but we’ve got guys like Mike Tinoco, Dustin Blount, Ryan Henry redshirting this season and ready to go next year. Not to mention Jovonte Taylor who should be able to return next year. Malcolm Lane and Greg Salas will be back and so will Pilares. Not to mention the likes of Billy Ray Stutzmann and Deondre Powell coming aboard.

We lose almost our entire defense next season as part of the largest senior class in recent memory, if not ever at 35 I think. Coach Mack said the 2009 season would be his biggest concern and he and his staff are taking care of this.

Also Rolo is doing some work out in Cali and he’ll be sure to find some gems there.

With the kind of success Mack has done with recruiting thus far I have the utmost confidence that this coaching staff will do everything they can to keep the cupboard full for years to come.

I can’t say much about the o-linemen coming in or those UH is talking to as I only know the potential recruits people mention on here and some of them slip my mind after a while which is NO disrespect to those kids as it just shows my limited memory 🙁 .

  104. homey November 13, 2008 11:33 am

Kazz – it would be you to wear contacts like that! I mean you already to the tattoo thing so why not the green and white contacts!

    James,

I was stuttering yesterday at Sports Authority. There is a bunch of new Under Armour gym gear there as well as some new UH stuff I never saw before, including about 2 new hat designs I haven’t seen at the Rainbowtique… plus there are A LOT of #6 home and away jerseys there for 64.99 which seems cheaper than the Rainbowtique’s 65.00 but the Rainbowtique does not add sales tax, but Sports Authority does of course.

Plus new cross trainer UA shoes… oh man I had to leave before I send myself further into credit card debt!

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

    Questions about other UH sports:

    102) Since the Wahine VB team win the WAC every year (and it’s expected to), do they receive something to commemorate the championship every year? If not, why not? If yes, then what do they receive? I don’t ever recall seeing anything about this.

Exclusive rights to all our leftovers at the Tsaiko T-gates. Nah…Nah…jez kidding! That is a good question. What would you suggest? We can put it to a vote and get it done like we did the Softball team. You want to take the lead on this one? You got Homes ready to spin the Wheel of Fortune. I think they’ll quote me at 350.00. I’ve always gone to T&T Tattoo in Aiea for all my others as I’m just used to them.

I could do it now, but I have other more pressing issues to deal with first.

    RE: Team Awards.

What ruffled the “feathers” of a lot of people about the lack of any kind of gift to the softball players was the fact that the Wahine Softball program doesn’t have the kind of booster club funds Na Koa, men’s basketball, and women’s volleyball has.

Now no can help this kind, but what got me irritated was that the NCAA does not allocate funds for gifts to players. While it is not a necessity it would be a nice gesture. I guess the NCAA no mo “aloha”.

I do remember a story about how the Wahine Soccer team was not able to fund summer school for their players because they were given bracelets or pendants to celebrate last season WAC title.. Or was it the other way around? I can’t remember.

I also someone at UHAD saying that there is no “general fund” set up to gather the money necessary to reward players with individual gifts following a championship season.

I think a quick back would be good. More like a Pilares in quickness and agility but a little more size.

Heun is a good back (from what I’ve seen). He’s big, has the power running game, and is speedy (remember in the Spring game when he caught the DB who picked off TG…I was like, “Whoa look at that lineman run. He is quick.”…but it was Heun).

    MIH,

sorry bout not responding to ur comment bout IHOP….just got back on, and now that I have, geeezz, am lost for words….bwaaaaahahaha!!

  182. Calvin from Kona November 13, 2008 2:09 pm

now I go from Jack’s chicken guy to fried chicken?

  183. Just Saying November 13, 2008 2:12 pm

open parenthesis Jesse close parenthesis James,

I like Heun/Rego as our big backs.

I think we still need our quick small back. Maybe 2 if Pilares stays at slot.

  184. (Jesse) James November 13, 2008 2:14 pm

    Just saying…

I agree. I think Pilares is better suited at slot, although he is an awesome back…..

  185. Ronald McDonald November 13, 2008 2:14 pm

Don’t forget about my chicken selects. Better than Jack’s one.

  186. Kaimuki Kid November 13, 2008 2:16 pm

D1 Keith Jr Lopati was the one that got tackled as he was crossing the goal line right at the knees that pretty much ended his football career. I remember that they had to use a kevlar-like material called Goretex (cutting edge technology at the time) to replaced damaged ligaments, he never regained his awesome cutting ability. He was a load to bring down. It was a home game against SDSU, he had already scored, there was no need to hit him at the knee no less, it was a big time cheapshot IMO. I recall he was a big time recruit from Utah that had a lot of famly here. Watching him run with the ball was a beautiful thing…

  187. LizKauai [Believer] November 13, 2008 2:27 pm

A-Joe. Interesting that Nick Montana plays on the same team as Trevor Gretzky!

  188. d1島 November 13, 2008 2:32 pm

    Kaimuki Kid,
Thanks. I wasn’t quite sure but, you are right, it certainly was impressive watching him prior to that.

  189. d1島 November 13, 2008 2:33 pm

…btw, if you can recall that play, methinks you are hardly a “kid” 😉

    heheheh

  190. Kaimuki Kid November 13, 2008 2:46 pm

Was at that game and Ref didn’t even throw a flag. The tackle was so unecessary, what a waste, he would have played at the next level…

  191. madeinhawaii November 13, 2008 3:11 pm

umnn.. so which team won the scout bowl?

  192. madeinhawaii November 13, 2008 3:15 pm

Huh? did you guys know that Na Koa was advertising for a Director or Developement/Athletics?

    http://www.uhf.hawaii.edu/employment/about-dirdevath.asp

    Any takers?

  193. Kazz November 13, 2008 3:16 pm

umnn.. so which team won the scout bowl?

Adam Leonard’s team. Shane Austin scored the winning TD in OT.

  194. Kazz November 13, 2008 3:17 pm

    LizK,

Oh, I think all they have is the white car flags… I haven’t seen green ones. I can check tomorrow at the SSC though.

  195. Calvin from Kona November 13, 2008 3:19 pm

    Kazz,

I’m going to the basketball game. I believe the twins are coming too.

  196. Kekoa November 13, 2008 3:23 pm

A-Joe ~ So if we picked up Will Smith’s kid, Gretsky, and Montana…they would start calling UH…University of Hollywood.

Seriously tho…Nick Montana rarely played the 2nd half, and when he did it was for only a few snaps. Yet this kid is rolling up the numbers just like whatshisname did…MSLiz help me out with the name!

  197. Ronald McDonald November 13, 2008 3:27 pm

no one rolls numbers like I do. 4 billion hamburgers a day.

  198. LizKauai [Believer] November 13, 2008 3:30 pm

    Thanks, Kazz!
I didn’t know there was such a thing as green flags until I saw Kymry’s pix from the OSU game! They are amazing fans- rent a white car, add the UH LARGE magnetic signs, green flags – and Ride with Pride!

  199. Jay November 13, 2008 3:35 pm

    Now those are Road Warriors!

Hey Mr. Mcdo (filipino version) how come you have spaghetti and fried chicken in the Philippine stores and not US? I’m sure it will do well here.

  200. madeinhawaii November 13, 2008 3:46 pm

Is Stanford really a good fit for Nick Montana?

  201. madeinhawaii November 13, 2008 3:48 pm

    mctruck…

about you not responding for 5 hours.. I just figured that as the time zone differential.

I’m in the same predicament as Al. The only white I wear nowadays are napkins…

okay as long as you not talking sanitary kine.

  203. madeinhawaii November 13, 2008 3:57 pm

Hmm… now we have both Mr and Mrs Bolla as Wahine Basketball Coaches? Interesting.

  204. (Jesse) James November 13, 2008 3:58 pm

    AL….Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  205. Pauoa Boy November 13, 2008 3:58 pm

Welcome to Warrior Nation Chad Lopati…

I can see our Defense getting back to being the hardest hitting team and most feared defense in the nation! Another great addition to an already good looking bunch of recruits for the defense. Potentially these incoming guys plus the redshirts and JC’s could put together an explosive, hard nosed, bone-shattering defense for years!

  206. al November 13, 2008 4:00 pm

okay, stretch…..i get one whole gallon of ultra white exterior premium paint just for you. then we paint across your chest these words for you to torment the cinci coaches.
    in the front: “cinci pussycats”
    in the back; “meow”

just tell the uh admisnistrator that it is not one violation because it is your game day apparel.

  207. ICYUL8 November 13, 2008 4:02 pm

Happy Birthday to my bruddah Pauoa Boy!

  208. al November 13, 2008 4:03 pm

pauoa…..now if only we can land that certain running back. that would be the charm.

  209. Garret November 13, 2008 4:03 pm

I swear, last season, after the bowl was over.. what kept us all pumped up till spring practice were the recruiting announcements… now what are we gonna do when the Sheraton-Hawaii Bowl ends? Talk Boise-to-boys?

    madeinhawaii,

The Texas fans have had this “problem” for years now. You should know that once 2009 recruiting ended (which was before the season began) that the 2010 recruiting talk started! I think that there are several 2010 offers out already and some 2010 commits have been made already to teams around the country. Plus, there is Spring Practice to talk about.

  210. Garret November 13, 2008 4:04 pm

    Happy Birthday Pauoa Boy!

  211. al November 13, 2008 4:05 pm

so is this mata’utia also related to that same family out in the campbell hs areas or the waipahu running back?????

  212. Garret November 13, 2008 4:05 pm

Adam Leonard’s team. Shane Austin scored the winning TD in OT.

    Kazz,

I thought that Joe Avery scored the winning TD? I think that Shane Austin threw the pass to get his first Scout Bowl win.

  213. ICYUL8 November 13, 2008 4:06 pm

    al,

I hope so to, his last couple games have been ONION, watching him terrorize defenses just like make you cry! The last game I watched he went for 184 yds TD, previous game he ran for 300+ 4TD, game before that he had like 150+ 3TD…this kid is mean. Anybody who pick him up going have the next Barry Sanders/Reggie Bush garrans.

  214. al November 13, 2008 4:06 pm

    pboy…..its you birthday????

have a good one bro and throw down a few for me!

  215. Garret November 13, 2008 4:07 pm

This is not my idea of ideal halftime entertainment for the Super Bowl. I do not think that he’s on the same level as many other halftime entertainers!

Jesse McCartney will take the field for United Way, the Detroit Lions and the National Football League during the Thanksgiving Day halftime show as part of the Lions vs. Tennessee Titans game at Ford Field Nov. 27 at 12:30 p.m. ET on CBS.

  216. Pauoa Boy November 13, 2008 4:08 pm

  218. al November 13, 2008 4:09 pm

    mih and garret…..

no jump to conclusions too fast. we still gotta hold ass until those loi’s are signed, sealed, delivered.

and who knows, maybe we catch one last minute “100 lb ulua” before the closing period. somebody might change their mind yah.

i mean our starting quarterback was the last guy we recruited on the eve of the loi date last year. that was one big fish.

  219. Pauoa Boy November 13, 2008 4:11 pm

    al,
Yups today is…I threw down planny last night actually at the Marine Corps Ball. Felt like Hank the Tank! Love the feeling though of being double fisted with drinks all night and not paying a dime. Needless to say it has been a long morning so I actually going celebrate this weekend.

  220. jm2375 November 13, 2008 4:11 pm

  228. Kekoa November 13, 2008 4:37 pm

Thirty years ago Mickey Dees opened their first store in Germany. No surprise that they served beer & wine. However, I complained about Saimin not being available. When I got that cold German stare…I decided to finish eating my Big Mac and Shutup!

  230. wafan November 13, 2008 4:42 pm

    Happy birthday to you!

  231. Just Saying November 13, 2008 4:44 pm

All this talk about needing o-line, o-line, o-line recruits may be overrated for this class. If people take time to look on the roster, we got some young big linemen buried on the depth chart. Austin Hansen, Adrian Thomas, Tui Tuiasosopo, etc. Next year’s battles for o-line spots should be interesting. I think Letuli and Estes (if he stays for senior season) are the only shoe-ins for starting

  232. Pauoa Boy November 13, 2008 4:44 pm

Mahalos for the B-Day wishes Gang…

  233. J-Dog November 13, 2008 4:45 pm

    PB,

anything new on the RB you got your eye on?

  234. Hoohiki November 13, 2008 4:47 pm

Kazz, since you want a tat with a traditional print, try getting it the traditional way.

  235. Pauoa Boy November 13, 2008 4:47 pm

    Just Saying,

To me Estes needs to stay his Senior season to improve his draft stock more. He’s a very good lineman no doubt and will get drafted somewhere but I think if he plays another year it will help him. He still has parts of his game he needs to improve on to be dominant like Samson Satele!

  236. Just Saying November 13, 2008 4:52 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

I agree about Estes needing to stay. I believe Samson had the same decision before 2006, and look what staying did for his draft stock. A solid 2nd round draft pick!

  237. Pauoa Boy November 13, 2008 5:01 pm

    J-Dog,

Besides him dominating his last couple games not much else. They are getting ready for CIF playoffs. Latest word is that he still is undecided and has many offers, hasn’t narrowed his choices down as he is focusing on finishing the season strong and winning the championship this year. Dad although and ASU alum has left the decision making up to him. Coach says he should be narrowing his choices soon per email, but UCLA, SDSU, Georgia Tech, Fresno St., New Mexico, and UNLV have been pushing hard to get him. Sources say he will probably choose a PAC-10 school and they say UCLA. I say not cause Hilliard is heading there. Anyway, this kid is frikkin bad arse already built for the college game. He may seem small, but this kid reminds of Barry Sanders, fast, strong, and very elusive! He is 5’9″ 210lbs. Runs consistent 4.3 40s and 10.7 100yd. last time he was clocked.

  238. madeinhawaii November 13, 2008 5:10 pm

    Kekoa…

McDs don’t serve Saimin in Japan either.. nor Ramen… not even rice at breakfast… is that NOT Japanese or what?

    Garret…
Will be nice to have that kind of Texas recruiting problem for a change, eh? We can all drool over what the starting line up will be like and who the back ups will be …and what players will have an impact in the year to follow next.

  239. d1島 November 13, 2008 5:14 pm

    Awryte J-E-T-S lookin’ pretty good…

    24-13, half.
SJSU rookie and former Warrior nemesis, Nick Lowery burned late in the half by Jabar Gaffney on a fade route for NE’s only TD.

  240. d1島 November 13, 2008 5:15 pm

    Aikoholoholonau…

  241. Ronnie November 13, 2008 5:26 pm

    Happy Birthday Pauoa Boy!

  242. Pauoa Boy November 13, 2008 5:29 pm

    Thanks Aunty Ronnie…

    Happy Birthday PB!

  244. Jason November 13, 2008 6:08 pm

    Happy birthday Pauoa Boy!

Yeah, John Estes needs to stay. Interior linemen do not go early.

Great video, Princess Leila! Wow, it’s so great to have you back.

Which reminds me, I ran into the better-looking Tsai today. I just so happened to be looking at Mike’s bike and thinking about him when he showed up. 😛

I really like Lopati, glad to hear he’ll be a Warrior.

    * * *

In non-football news, if you haven’t already done so, I recommend you read the article in today’s Advertiser about UH’s new Master’s in Financial Engineering degree. When I was on my trip this summer, I was telling my friend Kim that UH needs to get more involved in biological and financial mathematics — UH has been working on developing a two-semester 300-level sequence in mathematical modeling with an emphasis on biology. So now we needed something in financial mathematics to develop. Then she told me about UH’s new financial engineering program. I was shocked — and giddy — upon hearing this news. I’m glad to see this program get its due publicity.

  245. d1島 November 13, 2008 6:09 pm

    Happy Birthday Pauoa Boy!

  246. Ronnie November 13, 2008 6:09 pm

  255. Pauoa Boy November 13, 2008 6:26 pm

    Princess Leila,
Much Mahalos for the videos, really enjoy them as the players get a chance to let loose on camera. Just hope Adam and the rest of the boys win out and go to the Hawaii Bowl and kick whoever’s arse wants to play us, so he can really say “WE GOT YOU SUCKA!!!”

  256. duffer November 13, 2008 6:28 pm

  257. d1島 November 13, 2008 6:28 pm

    Pomai . . .

That would be awesome. It is not necessarily a bad thing when the community gets involved. But, it is a bad and sad thing when the university seemingly does not even try.

  262. d1島 November 13, 2008 6:48 pm

What does a “prevent Defense” do?

Cassell to Moss, TD. 0:01 left. Under review.

Oxford Compiles List of Top 10 Irritating Phrases

    The Telegraph (UK)

Oxford compiles list of top ten irritating phrases

A top 10 of irritating expressions has been compiled by researchers at Oxford University

    By Charlotte Bailey
    Last Updated: 3:18PM GMT 08 Nov 2008

Heading the list was the expression ‘at the end of the day’, which was followed in second place by the phrase ‘fairly unique’.

The tautological statement “I personally” made third place – an expression that BBC Radio 4 presenter John Humphreys has described as “the linguistic equivalent of having chips with rice.”

Also making the top 10 is the grammatically incorrect “shouldn’t of”, instead of “shouldn’t have”.

The phrases appear in a book called Damp Squid, named after the mistake of confusing a squid with a squib, a type of firework.

The researchers who compiled the list monitor the use of phrases in a database called the Oxford University Corpus, which comprises books, papers, magazines, broadcast, the internet and other sources.

The database alerts them to new words and phrases and can tell them which expressions are disappearing. It also shows how words are being misused.

As well as the above expressions, the book’s author Jeremy Butterfield says that many annoyingly over-used expressions actually began as office lingo, such as 24/7 and “synergy”.

Other phrases to irritate people are “literally” and “ironically”, when they are used out of context.

Mr Butterfield said: “We grow tired of anything that is repeated too often – an anecdote, a joke, a mannerism – and the same seems to happen with some language.”

The top ten most irritating phrases:

1 – At the end of the day

    2 – Fairly unique

    3 – I personally

4 – At this moment in time

5 – With all due respect

    6 – Absolutely

    7 – It’s a nightmare

    8 – Shouldn’t of

    9 – 24/7

    10 – It’s not rocket science

  265. wafan November 13, 2008 6:53 pm

    d1 . . .

Was that a trick question? If your team employs a prevent defense all it will do is prevent your team from winning.

  266. Jason November 13, 2008 6:58 pm

With all due respect to those actually coaching, I personally believe that the prevent defense should absolutely be abolished. It’s not rocket science; at the end of the day, you lose! 😛

  267. Kazz November 13, 2008 6:59 pm

    D1,

I’m sure The Hokies can answer that question as they got schooled on it against Boston College last season. . . . 🙄

  268. madeinhawaii November 13, 2008 7:00 pm

    Wafan,

Sorry man.. but I gotta say..

    IMHO…
That top ten most irritating phrases post is something that you shouldn’t of posted. I personally think, with all due respect, that it is absolutely not fairly unique at all. It’s not rocket science to know that at this moment in time with our minds on football 24/7, at the end of the day you will realize that you really shouldn’t of posted it at all.

  269. wafan November 13, 2008 7:05 pm

    mih and jason . . .

Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! I was working on something that included all of those items in a coherent paragraph. But, you beat me to it. Here is my submission.

    ===

Actually, at the end of the day, I discourage the use of these phrases. I personally and absolutely agree, at this moment in time, it’s a nightmare. But, since these ubiquitous terms are seemingly used 24/7, and are not fairly unique, they shouldn’t of been used in any scholarly paper.

With all due respect, it’s not rocket science.

  270. wafan November 13, 2008 7:06 pm

The funniest one I heard from a kid was about how hard he works at school 24/7 Monday through Friday.

    Huh?

  271. d1島 November 13, 2008 7:07 pm

    J-E-T-S win in OT, 34-31.

    aikaukaunau….

  272. Jason November 13, 2008 7:07 pm

With all due respect, while I didn’t use them all, at least my little write-up is fairly unique in that I talked about the topic at hand.

  273. wafan November 13, 2008 7:08 pm

“When all is said and done.”

Maybe that is why unko Herman was not liked?

  274. wafan November 13, 2008 7:09 pm

Wow! Jason drops the sledge hammer.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  275. madeinhawaii November 13, 2008 7:10 pm

Prevent defenses are geared almost exclusively towards stopping an extremely long pass. They are frequently used in obvious passing situations, such as a third-and-very-long situation, or to prevent a long score on the last play of a half, or when the defense believes that the offense must pass (for example, if the offense is trailing late in a game). Otherwise the prevent is almost never used. The defense trades size for speed, and tries to ensure that no receiver can get behind the defense. A prevent defense backs up the coverage so far that it will often give up long yardage, but it makes scoring a touchdown in a single play very difficult.

  276. Jason November 13, 2008 7:16 pm

No, the answer is, “The prevent defense prevents you from winning.” That’s shorter to say. Faster to type. 😀

“When all is said and done.”

Maybe that is why unko Herman was not liked?

I think you meant the classic:

👿 “AT THE END OF THE DAY” 👿

“The prevent defense… AH C’MON…” – Cal Lee.

(Well not really a Cal Lee quote, but it sounds like Coach Lee … 😉 )

That reminds me, I forgot to look up the word “charticle.” So I just did. Geez, I hate charticles.

okay, stretch…..i get one whole gallon of ultra white exterior premium paint just for you. then we paint across your chest these words for you to torment the cinci coaches.
    in the front: “cinci pussycats”
    in the back; “meow”

gee thanks, are you trying to say that my body is wide enough to write “cinci pussaycats” on it??

  281. Stretch November 13, 2008 7:25 pm

I think Ron Lee has come up with something new, it’s called a Prevent Offense – running the ball when get plenty time left but no can run out the clock. It also prevents you from winning.

  282. wafan November 13, 2008 7:27 pm

    Kazz . . .

Actually, unko Herman used to say, “At the end of the day, when all is said and done . . .”

Man, when he combined them like that I knew the lie was going to be a good one so I always put on my chest wadders before continuing to read what he said.

    KARAOKE CALL
    Saturday, November 15, 2008
    9:00 PM (after Wahine Volleyball)
    Club Genji

Karaoke Call and “not-Lyn’s-birthday” celebration after the Wahine volley match this Saturday. Some arriving at 8:15 for dinner first.

Come anytime, leave anytime. No charge except for your optional fuud and drink. Lots of 60’s, 70’s and 80’s favorites to rock the house! Some Japanese tunes too as we share the main lounge (unless we double our numbers), but we’ll have room to dance–or boots to walk–in the aisles 🙂

RSVP’s not necessary, but let me know if you can (for initial setup reasons or you want a late night nabeyaki udon).

He did? I dunno I usually stopped listening to whatever he was saying about six words into his first sentence of a statement so that probably is the reason I missed the rest of his chattering.

  288. Jason November 13, 2008 7:46 pm

Stretch: Ouch. But I think that’s more Coach Mack. Yeah, not a big fan of it too. Then again, I’m an offensive guy.

Didn’t Dick Tomey perfect this at SJSU for about seven seasons? 😛

Kazz – Dick Tomey has a Prevent “the” Offense – flood the field before the game to make it a pigpen

Looks like NMSU will be firing Mumme…helped by how he never signed the contract extension they offered him last year. That makes it a lot easier on them financially if they fire him.

mid speculation regarding head coach Hal Mumme’s future with the New Mexico State football program, the Sun-News has learned that the coach refused to sign a one-year contract extension offered to him by the university last year.

Athletics Director McKinley Boston offered Mumme a contract extension last December that would have pushed the coach’s deal through the 2010 football season. Boston said Wednesday that Mumme declined the offer.

“I offered him an extension and he chose not to sign it,” Boston said. “I chose not to make it public information.”

  304. madeinhawaii November 13, 2008 9:37 pm

Now why would Mumme refuse to sign a one-year extension? Was he holding out on a longer term, expecting to win more games this season with his new defensive coordinator?

  305. Garret November 13, 2008 9:37 pm

The football players on BYU, Utah, and Utah State have a total of more than 100 returned missionaries. This is a factor in a number of recruit’s choice of schools, including Manti.

There are more than 100 returned missionaries listed on the rosters of the three major college football teams in Utah.

As a senior at Kahuku (Hawaii) High School in 2003, Walker Vave had scholarship offers from Oregon State, Utah and Brigham Young University. What was most important to him, however, was giving those opportunities up — at least for the immediate future.

Vave eventually signed a letter-of-intent to play for Oregon State, but he also made a commitment to the Lord before beginning his football career.

    madeinhawaii,

I’m guessing that Mumme thought that he could get a better offer after this season…but instead, his job is definitely in danger.

  314. madeinhawaii November 13, 2008 9:44 pm

Isn’t Starbucks teetering on financial involvency?

Why aren’t the EPA going after that Aussie? Endangering the poor whales! Shame on him.

  315. madeinhawaii November 13, 2008 9:46 pm

    Garret…

Not taking that 1-year extension was like putting all your eggs into one basket that hadn’t been made yet.

It’s too bad. His offense was okay.. it was his lack of defense that hurt him the most. The new DC just needs a little more time and recruits.
