Elimimian is Co-Player of the Year; Veikune on 2nd team

Solomon Elimimian today was named the WAC’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year.
Joining Elimimian on the All-WAC first team are Adam Leonard, John Estes and Ryan Mouton.
Michael Washington, David Veikune and Keala Watson are on the second team.
Veikune deserved to be on the first team. And it’s surprising that Josh Leonard was shut out.
Your thoughts?

Rodney Bradley, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound wideout from Navarro Junior College (Texas), has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors.
Bradley told The Advertiser he made his commitment last night.
Bradley said he is capable of running 40 yards in under 4.4 seconds — a claim supported by Navarro assistant coach Kevin Curtis.
Curtis played safety for Greg McMackin at Texas Tech and the San Francisco 49ers. Curtis recommended Bradley to McMackin.
In 11 games for Navarro (10-1), Bradley caught 29 passes for 555 yards. He accounted for nine of Navarro’s 10 scoring receptions. That was quite an accomplishment considering that Navarro runs 70.3 percent of the time.
Bradley will earn his associate degree this month, then enroll at UH in January. He said he will participate in the offseason conditioning program and spring practice.
“I’m looking forward to that,” Bradley said.
Curtis said: “Rodney did a great job for us. He’s going to be a great asset to the University of Hawai‘i. He’s going to get an opportunity to catch a lot of balls in Hawai‘i. He’s going to shine. You’ll hear about this kid in the next couple of years. Hawai’i’s got a steal right there.”

Happy birthday to Jojo and Mei Ling.

There is alot to be said about a man keeping his word, and acting like
he wants to keep his word.

despite all else, Coach Mack comes across as a man with a plan and who wants to keep his word. Great job, coach!

Happy Birthday to my youngest son Taylor! He has been so good and patient the last two games waiting (sleeping) in the car while Mom is spending quality time with the late night Tsaikos at the after-the-game tailgate.

FYI: In five days Ronnie, Ian and Aaron will arrive in the islands and will be at the tailgate in more than spirit. Let’s hope that mother nature greets her with a beautiful afternoon and evening on Saturday!

    Whoo-hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. wafan December 1, 2008 4:42 am

A fine foggy and wet morning to all!

The neighbor across the street must have moved his house — cannot see it. Driving will be an adventure today.

  22. wafan December 1, 2008 4:44 am

Happy birthday MeiLing! So you finally made the big 30.

    Welcome to Hawai’i, Rodney!!!

  23. wafan December 1, 2008 4:48 am

This past Saturday a tour bus carrying the Bellevue HS (WA) football team overturned on I-5. The most serious injury was a concussion. The game was rescheduled for tonight.

Some fool did not tie down their load and a ladder fell off a pick up truck. The bus swerved to miss the ladder. I hope they find the clown and fine him to the fullest extent allowed under the law.

  24. wafan December 1, 2008 4:52 am

I keep getting these announcment mailers from WaMu about how I now have free access to over 14,000 Chase ATM’s.

I asked the manager why it was such a big deal. She tells me that I can have access to my $0.37 cents anywhere in the nation. Oh, I respond. Where is there a Chase bank in Washington State?

She gave me a blank stare.

  25. wafan December 1, 2008 4:55 am

$86,609 (up $8.5k from last year) to purchase everything on the 12 Days of Christmas.

I wonder how much it would cost for the Hawai’ian version?

  26. wafan December 1, 2008 4:56 am

Time to head out to confuse the kids!

BTW – Hats off to Davone Bess for leading the Dolphins in receptions yesterday.

    Warriors 24 – Bearcats 17

  34. Annoddah Dave December 1, 2008 6:40 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Wonder if everyone heard the big plug for this blog at the Saturday game. While the HA was the title sponsor, some of their ads on the Jumbotron included the “most popular blog” in Hawaii, i.e., the WB with our blog leader ST! Pretty heady stuff…anyway, I did check it out…they are correct, this is a popular blog!!!???
    Go Warriors!

  35. Kekoa December 1, 2008 6:43 am

Mei Ling is having another birthday? That’s the 3rd one since July! Hehehe…some people just can’t get over being 30 years old I guess.

    Happy Birthday Seasoned Citizen.

  40. Kekoa December 1, 2008 7:03 am

Whoa…try wait..try wait! Happy Birthday Jojo!…Is that a good BINGO Jeje?

Let’s see that makes it about 2 months since your last T-gate appearance, so you aged another 10 years since then, right? j/k…see you Saturday. You may surprise us with your gourmet special.

As you can tell by MS Liz’s photos, joje needs to get back to work with Homey on the mechanics of how to throw all the ‘breaking stuff.’ Once Curveball’s grandson, *Slider* gets up to speed, he will take over the piching duties at future t-gates.

  41. bighilofan2 December 1, 2008 7:20 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere!

    Rob25,
    howzit howzit.

Hiya Liz K. Hope you have a sparkling smiley kinda day!

I wuz thinking about how smart this Obama guy is acting, and I’m thinking about our Coach and how smart he’s acting. I’m hoping hoping hoping that, this being the last regular game this season, that he’ll buckaloose and go full blast against Cincy, so we’ll see how far we’ve progressed from Gainesville.

And I’ll redux my favorite prayer:

    da da da deear Lord
gimme Notre Dame for Christmas! 🙂

  42. Bulla December 1, 2008 7:21 am

Happy 29th bday to Jojo and Mei Ling,

May this day be a special one for the both of you!

Warriors land another speedy receiver….awesome job, the more the merrier, steel upon steel to sharpen everyone up.

GREAT WIN FOR THE WARRIORS!!! There were a few of us, a very few, who predicted that UH would go 7-5 and still go to the Sheraton Bowl, at the beginning of the season……oh well, here we are.

On a side note, Weber State defeated 3rd ranked Cal Poly coached by former UH player and coach, Rich Ellerson, 49-35 on Saturday. Cameron Higgins threw for 399 yds, 2 TD’s, 0 INT. Cody Nakamura (Baldwin) had a TD reception. Lawa’a Naihe (Kapaa) and fellow O linemen gave up only 1 QB sack. Ryan ‘The Beast’ Eastman had 1 solo tackle and left the game in the 2nd quarter due to an injury.

The Wildcats now head to Missoula, MT to play the Montana Grizzlies in the quarterfinals for the FCS Championship.

    GO WARRIORS
    GO WILDCATS

  43. Kekoa December 1, 2008 7:22 am

    Good Morning Tsaiko Ohana!

Anyone planning to go to Na Koa Lunch? I’m quite sure that it will be another Give The Warrior Helmet To A Tsaiko!” day.

Soon as my clothes pau dry, and I geeve ’em one quick stroke wit da hot iron, I’ll be on my way to the USPS to mail MS Liz’s forgotten phone enchargement tool (is that a Webster word, wafan?)

  46. Kekoa December 1, 2008 7:35 am

BHF2 ~ Let’s hope Obama is not just ‘acting!’ Have you taken any steps to try and shelter your stock portfolio and other investments? His plans include taking a huge bite out of any capital gains you leave lying on top your dresser wit da loose change.

Notre Dame? You mean doze *False Menehune* with da funny kine shoes? Shootz! Our guys can stand nose-to-nose and toe-to-toe wit da ‘Futting Irish’ Cream Soda gang. Bring ’em!

Happy Birthday Jojo and Mei Ling!

    and Morning World!

  49. bighilofan2 December 1, 2008 7:41 am

    Howzit Kekoa

yep, doze False Menehune wit da funny shoes. It would be fun fo dem
to show up. I get sum frenz who are ND grads, they are big UH boosters and them playing here would project the psychological picture that UH and the Hawaii Bowl is big time, even if ND is 3-9. 🙂

re Obama, yep I’m crying…. an he ain’t even Pres yet. all this foreplay is getting to me. 🙂 and I learned along time ago that silence is golden.
and the best investment strategy…. 🙂

too far & too lazy. As I mentioned to Rob, all Tsaikos are welcome to stop by. I park near the porta-potties as you guys cross the street in the top row. Look for the black “H” tent.

  63. al December 1, 2008 8:27 am

that would be the tent without the grill.

  64. Stretch December 1, 2008 8:39 am

al – I actually bought a new cheap grill.

Hawaii Bowl Tickets – if the Tsaikos are looking to buy a block of tickets, check this site for info. They have packages available. Fortunately for me, my company picks up a bunch of tickets for the employees.

  69. madeinhawaii December 1, 2008 8:45 am

    Al,

Looks like he still has a red-shirt year available to him if he’s unable to pick up the Warrior reads by next season. He hasn’t played in a passing team so all of this might be really new to him.

We shall see.. we shall see. But speedy receivers with good hands are always a good get.

Since we have not one, not two, but three Tsaikos wif birfdays, I have created a new way to honor them all at once. Jojo, Mei Ling and Taylor become “Jo-mei-ta” as we sing them Happy Birthday in our best Donald Duck voice.

    *Ahem*
    Happy Birthday to you…

BTW, do you also cook weird animal parts on your grill?

  80. Rob25 December 1, 2008 9:51 am

OK, why do I NOT feel sorry for Texas?

See that is karma coming to bite you in the behind. Next time you should play the Hawaii game instead of claiming financial concerns. Oh and our Colt is wayyyyy better than yours!

  81. FloridaTed December 1, 2008 9:58 am

    Good morning/afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

The Talent just keeps flowing our way, like a well spring of good fortune.
We must be really stocked at receiver now, counting returnees, redshirts and recruits, what’s that now, about 10? The competition will be fierce with high quality players.

Happy Birthday to the blog ladies MeiLing and JoJo.

  82. BillB December 1, 2008 9:59 am

Is the WAC fb team to be announced today?

I think Dan Kelley is going to be a key factor in the Cincinatti game. I’m concerned about his inconsistency, any other thoughts on DK?

You’ve got the bestest dancin’ seats in da stadium! Right above the band!

  87. Rob25 December 1, 2008 10:14 am

Dan Kelly’s problem is that he isn’t doing the twisty thing. Oh and something about the position of his plant foot (according to Jason).

Somebody please remind Dan that he needs to do his twisty thing. He only did a half one on the FG that was good, but the others…I don’t remember seeing him twist at all.

Hey there Dancin Joe…I mean addahknowjoe!

That percussion section is sure rockin’ it every game!

  89. FloridaTed December 1, 2008 10:16 am

Dan Kelley’s ice has melted. He’s lost confidence just like a golfer who lost his swing. He’s aiming and over thinking on every kick, consequently, every kick becomes an adventure.

He needs to point his foot about one yard outside his aiming point, a little like a ballet dancer, but besides that, his approach and angles are all messed up. His problems are easily solvable, but there seems to be nobody there who can point out his mechanics. I would love to spend just one hour with him. It’s 80 % head, 20 % mechanics.

  90. FloridaTed December 1, 2008 10:19 am

    Point his toe I meant.

  91. addahknowjoe December 1, 2008 10:19 am

    Rob25

    Oh my!

How can you possibly contain yourself at every game with all that jungle beats rhythmically groovin’ below your feet!

    I commend your composure!

  92. BillB December 1, 2008 10:23 am

FT, if he fixed his mechanics, everything would be repeatable and then the “head factor” is minimized. His mechanics are inconsistent from one game to the next, from one kick to another. On Saturday his PATs were right on.

Like I’ve said the basics are plant foot to set up aiming point (one of his problems is the plant foot has been too close to the ball) and then kicking foot to the target (he has been bringing this foot across his body, thus the tendency to draw/hook the ball).

  93. d1島 December 1, 2008 10:26 am

    Great Morning All!

Sounds like a good “get” at WR. Welcome to the Ohana Rodney Bradley. 3 to play 2 is good but with legit 4.3 speed no need spend too much time learning nuances of the RnS. Can you say, “Just chunk it out there?”

Hope Kekoa is right about another “Tsaiko helmet giveaway” at Na Koa today. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it 🙁 Have fun though!

    Hello Everyone!

Happy Birthday to Mei Ling and Taylor!

and thank you to all for the birthday wishes, even if you wished me yesterday, because I started celebrating yesterday after I saw the cool happy face that Venus and Jupiter made with the moon! I went to Million’s for some yakiniku. And more yakiniku tonight! My birthday wish was for yakiniku.

I think Veikune got ripped off.

  100. Pomai December 1, 2008 11:04 am

BB I know you said before that he should be able to correct things himself, but that looks like it is not happening. I still think he needs someone to help him. From what I understand from reading he does not get to much practice kicking, maybe coach Mack should arrange for him to practice at the stadium a couple of times. That way he could have as much time as he needs actually kicking the ball.

  101. d1島 December 1, 2008 11:10 am

    Congratulations to the All-WAC Warriors!
Solly is certainly deserving of POY although I’m a little surprised at Veikune being on the 2nd team.
    J. Leonard not being recognized is a surprise (ask the Wassou OL)

  102. 808flowmaster December 1, 2008 11:21 am

Did anybody notice this past Saturday that Dan Kelly little kid brother (aka Brett Symonds) looks to have a stronger and more accurate leg than Dan? Of course, that was just during warmups, but Brett was knocking them through from 52 yards with room to spare. Not bad for a kid that size. He could be the Richard Torres of the kicking game next year.

  103. Bulla December 1, 2008 11:25 am

    Veikune got ripped off
    I agree with ST

  104. J-Dog December 1, 2008 11:31 am

Veikune definitely got the short-end of the stick.

    Washington was a pleasant surprise.

Lane should have been on there for Special Teams with his kickoff returns.

  105. J-Dog December 1, 2008 11:35 am

Do the kickers not get much practice time because the team is on the practice field?

Hopefully when the Ching Field is complete, the kickers will get a chance to practice more kicking off turf, or practice away from the team on their own.

  106. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 1, 2008 11:39 am

    re: dan kelly.

i think coach mack needs to think about using the second string kicker…and when i say think i mean he should.

hes been having problems this whole year and whether it be mechanics or mental or both or allignment of the planets or wutever it doesnt matter.

i along with everyone else hopes dan can make good and learn from his mistakes, but we have 2 more games left – its hard to continue to say its a work in progress when its the end of the season of his senior year. he supposedly does well in practice so its not that he doesnt know what to do or how to do it. he just cant do it when its gametime. i.e michell wie (ok ok joking no hate mail please…haha =P)

In my eyes he should not be starting for FG’s and PAT’s. If the person behind him isnt any better…well then we are seriously up $h!+ creek. We are going to need every point we can get against Cinnci.

I feel terrible though. I have a lot of respect for the guy, especially what he accomplished last year, still do. FOr some strange reason he was the only person i was excited to meet and take a picture with in N’Orleans.

Dan if your reading this, wish you the best dude. I dont think anyone would argue that you have what it takes to make it in the NFL. Just gotta get past the problems now.

Amazing season that was full of surprises. Mahalo to all for your commitment to Warrior Football!

Great news on the quality of recruits coming in. Everyone seem to have great measureables. Come camp, it will be time to measure the heart and will to win a starting job.

ST, any O-line recruits? The defense looks to be reloaded and ready to do great things again. I am concerned about the guys who will be protecting our gunslinger and opening holes for the rb’s though.

Appreciate any info or thoughts on this. Mahalo O&O..

  113. al December 1, 2008 12:17 pm

i sat between the goal posts in the south end zone. i do believe that the refs blew that fg call. if anything it was very high and well above the goalposts, but it did split the uprights.

  114. FloridaTed December 1, 2008 12:17 pm

    BillB,

When I used to play the wings in soccer, in an other life, taking free kicks from just outside the penalty area to the left or right, my kicking toe was always pointed just inside the far goal post. That creates the famous banana kick, attributed to Beckham, but is almost as old as soccer itself.

With the right amount of power, it achieves 90 % accuracy. It may be defended, but it always goes inside the goal area. Kelly doesn’t have to worry about the power, only flight direction, which shoud make it even easier.

I would assume that Kelly knows that, that’s why I think most of the problem is in his head and a mixed up pre-shot routine.

Are you in Hawaii? If so, why don’t you go over and have a chat with him, he certainly can’t get much worse right now. I really would like to see him getting his mojo back.

  115. mookmook December 1, 2008 12:17 pm

Washington? How is that possible? Had minus return yards and a bunch of drops….Well lucky for him. Congrats everyone

Congrats to all the UH all-WAC honorees.

Agree that Veikune and JLeonard got ripped off.

Figured that the Wahines would get sent on the road. At least it’s only to LA and not the East Coast. Of course, now they’ll play in front of only several HUNDRED people instead of several THOUSAND knowledgeable (sp?) FANS. Uhh, but why USC and not San Diego? They had a better record. Nevermind, it’s the major conference thing, isn’t it?

  117. FloridaTed December 1, 2008 12:26 pm

In my book, all our Warriors are All Stars, especially during this year of adversity. They showed us what they’re made off, by ripping the season from the brink of disaster and managed to salvage great joy for the fans and themselves.

To me that is more admirable than when everything goes your way, besides, those votes are always highly subjective.

  118. jm2375 December 1, 2008 12:27 pm

  121. A-House December 1, 2008 12:35 pm

If a first team DE had lesser stats then Veikune, then he really got ripped off royally, but not to worry as he will be the first d-lineman to be drafted by the NFL.

Let’s hope Veikune and Leonard get pissed at the overlook and take it out on the Bearcats on Saturday!

Beyond just stats, you gotta ask yourself, who would I most NOT want to see on the opposing d-line when I’m on offense? I have to believe DV is one the top four in the conference causing heartburn for the other team. Maybe the voting should be done by the players who play opposite of the respective positions. That might tell the real story.

Congratulations to Sol, Adam, John Estes, Ryan Mouton, David Veikune, Michael Washington, and Keala Watson. David Veikune really deserved to be on the first team!

I don’t know why ST is surprised that Josh Leonard was shut out since he didn’t include Josh in his list of Warriors that might be named today. I mentioned that Josh could possibly make it…but I worried that the WAC games he missed due to injury would cause them to pass him over.

good afternoon tsaikos. just thinking about some what ifs’. if oklahoma wins the big 12 against mizzou, they will probably play the winner of alabama-florida for the national championship. if usc wins, they will most likely go to the rose along with penn state, so the fiesta bowl will have a free choice and hopefully it will be boise against utah, 2 undefeated teams. how about them apples (pine)!!!!!!!

    FT

right now the forecast is for clear weather. But it’s to far off to say for sure, it could change by friday night going into saturday.

  136. Garret December 1, 2008 1:25 pm

I’m going to Look at the DL on the WAC’s first team to see how badly Veikune was ripped off. It looks like 2 DTs and 2 DEs were named to the first team, so we really just have to focus on Ryan Winterswyk (BSU) and Kevin Basped (Nevada). These stats are via cfbstats.com.

Ryan Winterswyk has 36 tackles, 10 for loss, 4.5 sacks, 5 passes broken up, 2 forced fumbles.

Kevin Basped has 47 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, 3 passes broken up, 3 forced fumbles

David Veikune has 64 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 8 sacks, 3 passes broken up, 4 forced fumbles.

So, looking at the stats, what my eyes have seen this season seems to have been confirmed…Veikune deserved the first team spot!

  137. Stretch December 1, 2008 1:26 pm

    d1-shima.

the cincci defense is bad a$$. im really concerned as to what we can do to protect the QB. maybe bring in a blocking “tightend” in addition to farmer. who knows.

watching WSU rushing 4 against our 6 man o-line and still getting 2 past the o-line is pretty sad. its not gonna cut it so lets hope Brian Smith is prepping the guys do play up this saturday.

    Go Warriors!

  139. Garret December 1, 2008 1:28 pm

    64 tackles vs. 36 tackles
15 tackles for loss vs. 10 tackles for loss
    8 sacks vs. 4.5 sacks

In each category, David Veikune is far above BSU’s Kevin Basped!

  141. (Jesse) James December 1, 2008 1:31 pm

    whitey..

I’ve heard that scenario being played out on ESPN. Only thing wrong with that, and those who spoke about a playoff system are citing this as well, is that two mid-majors will be playing each other. This has two problems: One, it gives the supposed “big boys” an argument that smaller schools can’t “hang” with them and so the smaller schools needed to play each other. Plus, it allows bigger schools to avoid embarassment if they get beaten by a mid-major in a BCS bowl therefore adding fuel to the fire that there should be a playoff system in D1 football.

The second problem is that according to most television analysts, a Utah-Boise State bowl game will not be a huge television draw and therefore would allow the BCS to say, “Hey, we’re losing money on these small schools playing in the BCS because there is no television draw except in certain markets.” This would hurt other non-BCS schools from breaking into the big time….and will hurt any hope of a true playoff system in D1 football (which, this year, a lot of big school coaches have been calling for i.e. Pete Carroll, Mike Leach, Bob Stoops, Joe Paterno because some of them have been left out of the national championship picture).

    eh, just my opinion….lol

  144. Jack Flash December 1, 2008 1:35 pm

Dumb question for ST or whoevahs-

    Don’t think so…Howard doesn’t sound familiar.

btw, the back-up kicker is Symonds. Really unlikely that Mack will burn his redshirt year for the last two games despite DK’s struggles.
Heard Mack on with Pops and Kanoa this morning. He said he was gonna have a “come to Jesus” meeting with DK today. Hope it helps…

We’d love to join other Tsai-kos at the Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl, but the stairs issue means that we will have to take a pass on anything higher than three or four rows above or below the concourse level.

Mahalo to the ticket office staff who have been so responsive to the need to exchange our SSC tickets for more accessible seats.

I just got off the phone talking to the Project Manager for the Ching (Cooke) Field artificial turf installation who works for UH. The materials have arrived, but next phase of the work is waiting until the field dries out. According to the PM, the field will NOT be finished in time for the team to use for the Bowl game; however, there’s a call out to the Sports Turf Hawaii folks.

QUESTION: How much does the rain impact the accuracy of kicks and punts?

Re comments last night about the spectacular show in the western night sky shortly after sunset. The two bright dots are Venus and Jupiter and the white sliver is the moon. Saturn, another bright planet, rises in the east and is visible by i am. Mars is hidden in the glare of the sun but will be visible in the early morning sky in January.

Back in the day – 1991 to shortly after 9/11/2001 – we operated a “boutique” visitor industry business called A Guided Tour of The Galazy providing night sky excursions across the state. We became ardent amateur astronomers when we lived on the Big Island in the early 80s. We still drag out a telescope or two several times a year.

Well if Mack wont put in Symonds lets all just hope and pray Kelly can see the light.

I want to almost say he should not even practice. Go to the beach, go bowling, come to the bar with me or something. Get his mind off football and kicking. It might help him mentally. I play golf and i know what mental traps can do. Mechanically you know what you are doing right/wrong but the mind to body connections just dont seem to listen to each other.

  150. Stretch December 1, 2008 1:44 pm

Earlier in the season DK missed a FG or extra point, can’t remember which, and he said that he was rushing with the play clock running down. He then mentions that it will not happen again since he is a senior and that type of stuff shouldn’t happen.

One of the kicks this past weekend, the clock was running down and again, he rushed to beat the clock. I guess he never took what he said to heart.

  151. madeinhawaii December 1, 2008 1:45 pm

    d1shima,

Yep.. Cincy’s defense is pretty darn good.. at least against who they’ve played. Offensively, though, they haven’t put up the big numbers so our Warriors can win this one. They need to play better kick-off and punt return defense, though. Our Warriors obviously cannot give them good field position to start their drive.

Their safety is very good at reading the QB and where the QB is going to throw. He’s made a number of key interceptions this season already.

Mouton, Veikune and Elimimian will need to respond in kind to Cincy’s three all-American candidates on defense.

It will be a good measure for them to compare themselves against. Should be an exciting game of defense.

  157. whitey December 1, 2008 1:54 pm

(j)james, you got some points about the BCS, but somewhere along that line, many will ask, where’s the data to back this assumption. Last year, the Sugar Bowl had the greatest amount of viewers and did not include 2 BCS teams. They outviewed the other BCS schools, so I don’t think FOX is that stupid to let this just slide by without some thought or input. Plus the Fiesta committee is out west, so why not take care of the western schools. Me, i just thinking about the bs in the bcs and someday soon, going get one uprisinhg and there will be no bcs.

  158. WarriorMojo December 1, 2008 1:54 pm

D1: Are you sure Hawaii Bowl tickets are handled at the Stanley ticket office? I don’t know, but just thought I’d toss that out because technically it is not a UH event. And I know the online ticket service is linked.

As for me, we have our tickets already. I do know that there were some really good seats left on the mauka sideline for $5 cheaper. Only drawback is the sun and you’ll be behind the visitor’s sideline.

I agree that Veikune wuz robbed. He was dominant this year. BUT, Winterswyck is a stud even as a sophomore. He’s going to be a pain in the okole for two more years.

But in my opinion, Josh Leonard got robbed even worse. I know he missed some games due to injury, but I didn’t see a more dominant DT all year.

traditionally, UH has always played one of their best games against ranked opponents expecially the last game of the season. i am hoping that they carry on this tradition and if they are successful in defeating Cincy, the bcs have a huge black and blue, not to mention black and green, on their sh– face. what a christmas present this would be for the WARRIORS!!!!!!!

FT, yes I am in Hawaii & a long time soccer guy; it’s a little too late to speak to DK. For clarification it is generally easier to kick and control a soccer ball because of the round shape. I only say what I see mechanically & technically when he kicks, watch him intensely at the games & on the tube.

The shorter kicks on the hash are harder due to the angle and Saturday he did miss two short ones from both left & right hash.

Just hoping that he relaxes, gets his mechanics in order (plant foot & distance from the ball, approach angle, kicking foot to the target & body lean) and really just trust his stroke. . .don’t over analyze and don’t over think. JUST KICK IT DK, JUST KICK IT!

  165. WarriorMojo December 1, 2008 2:06 pm

Anybody (besides Pride.) remember Anthony Holyfield? He was a 6′ 4″ 260 pound defensive tackle, who I think played a couple of years for the Houston Gamblers in the USFL.

Anyway, I keep seeing a guy down on the field on the UH sideline that looks like him, or how I’d imagine he’d look all these years later, but I’ve never seen his name listed in any capacity with the team. Anybody know? Tony was a good guy whose then girl friend and later wife played basketball with one of my exes. Kinda Shy was on that team too, if I remember correctly.

  166. whitey December 1, 2008 2:06 pm

(j)james, d1. for hawaii bowl, count me, duffer, and kyeton in. send us info about the tickets. thanks.

  167. (Jesse) James December 1, 2008 2:07 pm

whitey…I see your point about FOX not letting this slide by. But only one non-BCS school made it last year and that was Hawaii. All of the other teams in the BCS bowls were from BCS conferences.

The thing is that out of the top twelve teams in the BCS rankings, Boise, Utah, and Ball State are three non-BCS conference schools that are undefeated. I believe Alabama is the only other undefeated team, but they belong to the SEC. Should Alabama lose to Florida, that would mean that there will probably be a number of 1 loss teams from the BCS conferences that will complain about not being in the national championship game…which would be a good thing if you are for a true playoff system…..Some of the Big 12 (a BCS Conference) coaches have already stated that they have figured out (and I’m sure many of them read all the different playoff versions floating around on the internet) a system where every conference (WAC, MAC, MWC, Sun Belt, C-USA, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 10 etc.) would send their conference champion to the “big dance” with a number of at large berths based upon rankings among other factors. The only drawback would be that teams would need to only schedule 11 game regular seasons…..

  168. HiFlyer December 1, 2008 2:08 pm

    (j) james
    yup, I just sent d1 an e-mail

I know that there are some that have already gotten their tickets.

  169. A-House December 1, 2008 2:10 pm

    Garret:

After reviewing the stats you posted, I know Veikune was robbed!

After all, someone at Benson U had to “beat” a Warrior because Benson U is 12-0, but season record should not be used as a measure to select all-WAC team members.

Basped may be a stud, but his stats are nearly half of Veikune’s. Is there a new criteria of “being a stud” to the selection process?

  170. A-House December 1, 2008 2:24 pm

    (J) J:

Hey, that’s my idea! who stole my copyright/patent for the playoff system that includes the champion of each conference and “at-large” invitations based on final ranking?

OK, now I will support the SEC until the (b)ull (c)rap (s)ystem is changed to a truly play-off system just likethe other sports.

  171. 808flowmaster December 1, 2008 2:26 pm

The one thing I have to give Dan Kelly props on is that he’s great in the clutch. He’s like the FedEx of kickers…when it positively, absolutely has to get there he makes it. I think I’d take a guy like Dan who’s a little inconsistent in times that may not matter as much but hits all the clutch kicks, than someone who makes all the dinks and dunks, but misses the game-winner.

  172. Garret December 1, 2008 2:34 pm

But in my opinion, Josh Leonard got robbed even worse. I know he missed some games due to injury, but I didn’t see a more dominant DT all year.

    WarriorMojo,

The trouble is, all of the games that Josh Leonard missed were WAC games. I think it is different if the player misses an early nonconference game (like how BSU’s Basped missed their season opener), but since teams only play 8 conference games if a player misses 2 that is significant.

Still, I think that Josh is deserving and I posted yesterday that I thought he was worthy of some honors from the WAC. Trouble is, the no tackles against Nevada and Utah State and the 1 assist against NMSU is a big part of the WAC schedule for UH…I know his stat drop was due to injury, but if this was a player for BSU we’d be arguing that it matters.

  173. BillB December 1, 2008 2:35 pm

Great point 808, DK’s inconsistency has not hurt the team this year. Last year he was “money” when it counted.

If that moment does come Saturday night, hoping he will deliver once again.

  174. Garret December 1, 2008 2:35 pm

    A-House,

I agree that Veikune was robbed. I agree with WarriorMojo that Basped is a stud…but Veikune is a stud too and had MUCH better production!

  175. Jason December 1, 2008 2:37 pm

Mack mentioned Veikune on the second team today at Nā Koa. That got a murmur going. I can’t say I’ve watched the other DEs closely, but I thought Veikune was a no-brainer 1st team guy. In fact, Mack said he almost voted for Veikune as defensive POY, but he voted for Solly instead.

Mack talked about Kelly too. To sum it up — either Iceman shapes up, or Ron Lee has a green light on fourth downs. Symonds is not an option. And let’s put it this way — I hope word gets to Kelly about what Mack said, and that it fires him up. The coach did not mince words … 😯

Mack mentioned that we’ll have Big East refs on Saturday. Thanks Herman! Then again, they might be better than our officials. 😆

The birthday girl, Mei Ling, was with us today. myki was out — something about a Tuesday lunch moved to Monday. 😛

Heard this morning that Eastside Grill closed down. sj-macro and I passed by, and indeed, the place was boarded up, and the sign taken down.

  176. Jason December 1, 2008 2:40 pm

Oh, and a little dancing birdie told me (and a few other people) that UH is after a couple JC offensive linemen.

  177. Garret December 1, 2008 2:43 pm

Crazy scenario…if Florida beats Alabama in the SEC title game (which I think will happen), the national title game could be Oklahoma vs. Texas! This is from BCS Guru, who understands the BCS more than just about anyone.

Just as the BCS gets past the first huge controversy of the year, with the standings ordaining a Big 12 title game berth for Oklahoma over Texas, the second, and potentially the mother of all BCS controversies is looming: The possibility of an all-Big 12 BCS championship game, leaving the SEC champion in the dust (or on Bourbon Street, come to think of it, there are worse consolation prizes).

If Alabama wins the SEC title game, the Tide will be in the BCS championship game. No doubt there. It’s a slam dunk. If Oklahoma blows the Big 12 title game, it’ll be Texas vs. the SEC winner in Miami – also a no-brainer.

It gets tricky if Florida and Oklahoma both win. On the surface, it should set up a Gators-Sooners BCS title showdown. But as Lee Corso would say: “Not so fast, my friend!”

At this point, the Gators are not guaranteed anything – other than a BCS bowl berth – if they win the SEC title game. If they finish No. 1 in both the coaches and Harris polls AND receive the majority of the first-place votes, then they can breath easy. But if Florida finishes second or even third both polls, it’s dead.

A win over the Tide will help the Gators’ computer rankings, but it’s unlikely to put them ahead of either UT or OU in the computer scores. So if the voters split their votes three ways among Texas, Oklahoma and Florida, then the Gators will be the odd team out.

  178. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 1, 2008 2:44 pm

    jason,

glad to hear we are after some o-line players. any idea who?

  179. Garret December 1, 2008 2:44 pm

Florida could beat Alabama…and end up playing Cincinnati in a BCS bowl game!

Further, while Florida still has a shot at the AP title – currently it’s No. 2, ahead of both OU and UT, the way the bowls are set up it might make winning a split title a bit trickier. Say the Gators beat ‘Bama and ascend to No. 1 in the AP poll (fair assumption) but get left out of the BCS title game, their Sugar Bowl opponent would be, gulp, No. 13 Cincinnati?

    How would that happen?

If the BCS title game becomes an All-Big 12 affair, then the Fiesta Bowl may very well pit unbeaten Utah against unbeaten Boise State, leaving the Sugar with either Alabama for a rematch or Cincinnati, the Big East champion. Depending on the outcome of the SEC title game, the Sugar may opt for Florida-Alabama II, but it could go with the Bearcats as well. There is no scenario for the Sugar to grab USC since the Trojans – assuming they defeat UCLA – are obligated to play in the Rose Bowl.

Yeah, like I said, we’re just getting warmed up here. Are you ready for Armageddon?

  180. Garret December 1, 2008 2:45 pm

It is crazy that the Harris poll has so much power in the BCS rankings…classic example here:

I asked Harris poll voter Pat Quinn, the former Oklahoma State University sports information director, how he would vote OU and Texas if the Sooners won Saturday night.

“Oh, I don’t know,” Quinn said. “Doesn’t really matter.”

    Really?

“I think Alabama and Penn State will probably play for the national championship,” Quinn said.

    You do?

“They’re the only undefeated teams, aren’t they,” Quinn said.

Uh, actually, Penn State has a loss.

“Oh well,” Quinn said, “those Big Ten teams have a lot of votes.”

  181. Big mac December 1, 2008 2:46 pm

I hope the Iceman is not hurt. He knows he is the man without any experienced backup kicker to replace him. ST, how much kicking does Kelly do in practice everyday? 50 kicks, 25 kicks?

  182. Jason December 1, 2008 2:51 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme: Dunno.

  187. (Jesse) James December 1, 2008 3:36 pm

Jason…weren’t we using mixed crew refs this year as part of a pilot project to see if the NCAA should just employ all the refs rather than the conferences? I thought I read something about that somewhere. If this program worked out, there would no longer be Pac 10 refs, Big East refs, WAC refs but crews of NCAA refs…sort of like how the NFL works its referee system.

A-House, I hear you. I think Mike Leach (the TT Coach) was saying he and Mack Brown talked about a possible16 team to 32 team playoff that could be accomplished in the same amount of time it takes to play all the bowl games now. To compensate for the extra games that teams in the playoffs would be playing, the regular season would be shortened to 11 instead of 13 games.

  188. wafan December 1, 2008 3:38 pm

    WDoc . . .

Not having had the opportunity to watch any wahine BB games I really do not have a first hand opinion. But, from the reports and comments made by others on this forum it sure looks like Bolla is not the right fit.

Are you referring to his poor win-loss record or another issue?

By the way, it was good to hear DDoc is on the road to recovery! Remember to take care of yourself, too!!!

  191. Jason December 1, 2008 3:48 pm

James: They are regional groups. I think we use WAC/MWC/Big 12 crews. But for Saturday, we get whatever the Big East uses.

  192. Alex December 1, 2008 4:03 pm

I believe the whole Warrior team should be recognized for their tremendous effort this year. No one really had no idea how the season would turn out after the Florida and Oregon St. games, but we pulled through. Veikune definitely got jipped with his second team placement. And I agree with you ST, it is definitely surprising J. Leonard was left out. He should have made the All-WAC team; that guy is a beast. It’s unfortunate other players such as Pilares didn’t make the team, but injuries have been a problem that has plagued our team this past year

  193. (Jesse) James December 1, 2008 4:06 pm

Jason…that’s what I meant. I think there was an NCAA announcement that the regional thing would be done on a trial basis for several years and then evaluated. After that, the thought was to go to a national system.

  194. Kona Girl December 1, 2008 4:14 pm

    Good afternoon Tsaikos!

Question for anyone that might know…

I happened to find myself on the field after the game and was congratulating one of the players. The problem, I had no idea who I was congratulating…his jersey was #9, but it was not Rick Taylor who is listed as #9 on the roster. So, I was wondering, does anyone know who wore #9 on Saturday?

Look forward to reading your comments and your take on the situation which has gone way beyond embarrassing.

The way a team performs is a result of:

    -Talent
    -Execution
    -Coaching

The execution can be tied in with the coaching and also the way a team plays emotionally can be attributed to how they want to win for that respective coach.

I admit I do not know that much about basketball, but I think a lot of people feel (myself included) that Jim Bolla is a questionable individual when it comes to guiding the Wahine Basketball program in the right direction.

AD Donovan is going to really have to evaluate this situation when the entire season is over to get the best overall image of where the program is in terms of competitiveness and in terms of revenue over cost.

  202. A-House December 1, 2008 5:06 pm

Coach Bolla, IMHO, does have a commo problem with the players and his people skills appear to be lacking. Or, it may just be his personality. Herman strikes again!! Like many fans have mentioned, it will be many years before his decisions forever leave UH.

His assistant, Chasity, seems to be the “energizer” for the Wahine and they seem to respond to her a lot more than to Bolla.

If end of season decision is to release Bolla, what will his wife do? The new head coach may have to find 2 new assistants.

  203. MeiLing December 1, 2008 5:33 pm

Is there a word for, “Spam” in Russian?

    According to freetranslation.com, it means:

“Theme well it is simple пиздец.
Anything was not really more actually?”

uhh… that makes as much sense as:

    “The topic I just pizdets.
    Is nothing poaktualney not found?”

Interesting (and a little disturbing) how some parents are paying to have their babies tested to see what sport their kids may be good at. This is being marketed as a way for parents to screen what sports they should get their kids into. I wonder how many parents would test their 2-year-olds to see if they should play football…

Here’s another slant on the Hawaii Bowl and ASU/UA:

    http://www.azcentral.com/members/Blog/jeffmetcalfe/40368

UNLV loss haunts ASU with Vegas bowl officials
Las Vegas Bowl officials are not as interested in Arizona State, win or lose in the Territorial Cup on Saturday, as they are in Arizona with a win.

That’s another adverse effect of a school record tying six-game losing streak that took the Sun Devils off the postseason radar for too long. Plus folks in Las Vegas are all too aware of ASU’s 23-20 overtime loss to UNLV, which finished 5-7 and is not bowl eligible. That loss just keeps on hurting since ASU already would be bowl eligible without it.

So the Vegas bowl is willing to take UA at 7-5/5-4 Pac-10 for its game against No. 11-ranked TCU or No. 20 Brigham Young on Dec. 20 and allow the Emerald Bowl (Dec. 27 in San Francisco) to keep California in the Bay area even though the Bears will finish 8-4/6-3 with a victory over winless Washington on Saturday.

But if ASU, a 10-point underdog, wins in Tucson, the Vegas bowl appears more likely to go with Cal. Vegas is unlikely to take UA off a loss, dispelling a rumor out of Hawaii that the Wildcats would go to Vegas win or lose, Cal to the Emerald and ASU to the Hawaii Bowl off a win over UA.

If the Sun Devils win, the more likely scenario is Cal to Las Vegas, ASU to Emerald and UA to Hawaii to face Hawaii on Dec. 24.

ASU played in the Hawaii Bowl in 2006 and is not excited about a return trip because of expenses and inability for fans to make the trip. The Sun Devils have never played in the Vegas or Emerald bowls.

There are ASU alumni on the Vegas bowl board, but the Sun Devils seemingly would have to do something special against UA to grab the Pac-10’s No. 4 bowl slot this year.

Dennis Erickson says his offense has “got to get better, no question about it.” He’s not saying if that means staff changes, but the suggestion floating around that Vice President for Athletics Lisa Love will force moves is insulting to both.

Love, a former coach, is not about to demand staff changes from the 10th winningest active major college football coach one season after Erickson debuted with 10 wins, a Pac-10 co-championship and was Pac-10 Coach of the Year. She has at least enough faith in Erickson to figure that out for himself.

Erickson is not tipping his hand whether he wants to make changes but unlike many fans is not blaming offensive woes on offensive coordinator Rich Olson. That’s because Erickson has plenty of input offensively before and during games and knows it’s simplistic to bash Olson.

That said, Erickson isn’t here simply to kill time until retirement. He aspires to another national title to go with the two he won at Miami and to play in the Rose Bowl, the only BCS bowl missing from his resume.

If he makes an offensive staff change, the obvious person to look to is Tim Lappano, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach on Tyrone Willingham’s outgoing staff at Washington. Lappano was with Erickson at Idaho in 1982, Wyoming in ’86, Washington State in 1987-88, Seattle Seahawks in 1998, Oregon State in 1999-2002 and San Francisco 49ers in 2003-04.

College/Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway is not joining the staff and should not. His son Jack being the QB pool is more than a minor conflict of interest. John, who has been at ASU practice a few times this season, is engaged to marry Paige Green, a former Oakland Raiders cheerleader.

Sure John was Jack’s position coach for awhile at Cherry Creek High School in metro Denver, but that’s a lot different than the consuming work required of a college assistant. Something John doesn’t need.

It’s clear from Erickson’s first two seasons that whatever is installed on offense in the spring is what the Sun Devils will stick with during the season. Major changes mid-stream are not what he believes in especially when the coaches feel the offensive line is struggling to keep up with what it’s already being asked to do.

It’s worth remembering that tackle Matt Hustad, tight end Dan Knapp and guard Zach Schlink all could be starting if not lost to knee injuries.

Also it’s very possible that 220-pound James Morrison, a walk-on running back from Phoenix St. Mary’s High School, might be the starting tailback now if he had not suffered a season-ending broken ankle on Sept. 16.

ASU players are available to the media only on Tuesday this week

  269. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 1, 2008 11:20 pm

If someone with a truck can come to our house on Saturday, we’ll bring tents and a tarp along with tables and chairs. DrDoc is still not driving and the truck we normally borrow when bringing that amount of stuff is too big for me to drive.

Re tonight’s basketball game: Different team showed up for the second half. Lots of potential – and not a single senior on the team. Turnovers remain a serious problem, but the guys played like they were having fun.

A certain Tsai-ko sat in the end near the band dressed like a bright orange traffic cone.

Mahalo for the various answers to the question @ #186. I could handle a losing season as long as it is apparent that growth is going to happen. However, Bolla is a real loser in all senses of the word. There’s a huge difference between discipline and nastiness.

Much as I hate to say it, I am not sure I want to attend any more Wahine basketball games because of him. I will, of course, because I want to support the players.

Women’s sports at UH have a tradition of winning or at least being highly competitive, but killing the spirit of the players sucks as a coaching technique.

Imagine if Bolla were replicated in football or men’s basketball or baseball or softball or women’s volleyball!

Question: What capital improvements projects would you like to see occur at UH Manoa which will benefit both athletic & academic programs? There will be very little “new” money for the operating budget; however, the Legislature will consider capital projects because they are funded over a 15 to 30 year period, create jobs, increase personal and business spending, and generate tax revenues.

  270. jm2375 December 1, 2008 11:36 pm

    WDoc – Jason or C_C? 😀 😆

BTW, no one’s answered my questions about Bolla’s contract. What are the specifics? Does he have a buyout clause?

I’ll check back tomorrow. Time for sleep.

    Nite nite.

TUE – cruise Kilauea lava entering sea

THUR – Nawiliwili, Kauai arrive 0800
    FRI – Nawiliwili depart 1400

Gotta love the fact that the Big East Champions are coming to town. Just another chance to stick it to the BCS! Question for the BCS: If two teams finish the year with one loss each, and one team’s loss is to the other, who is the national champion? That’s the question everyone should ask on Jan 9th.

The Warrior Express is rolling in from the Wessai Chaptah to scope out practice. We will also be raiding the UH ticket office for some Bowl tickets for the gang. By the time we finish doing that, it might just be ‘grind’ time at a place yet to be determined.

thought this blog was about All WAC…
Anyway, I have to agree with Al.
Veikune 2nd team? what a ripoff. But that’s ok, NFL scouts know the truth.
I know Fonoti personally – in middle school he was this skinny/lanky kid that could run fast. In HS, he was still thin and played safety/defensive back/linebacker. In college, he got huge and still growing. Before he is done, he could be another Al Noga but bigger.
