JC nose tackle commits to UH

David Hafoka, a nose tackle from College of San Mateo, said he gave his verbal commitment to the Warriors last night. Hafoka is 6 feet 2 and 310 pounds. He already has an AA degree. He’ll enroll at UH next month, and have two years to play two seasons. (He played in 2006 and 2008, but sat out 2007 because of a leg infection.) In 2006, his San Mateo teammates were Ray Hisatake, Francis Maka and Calvin Roberts.

    brought over from other side

on a somber note best wishes to Lilian Yonamine on the passing of her husband Masa. he was the a good man whom I had the pleasure of knowing some time back. masa was out of coaching and in the twilight of his years as AD at waipahu when I first meet him. he always had a smile and greeted everyone courteously. he loved to golf with his buddies especially Eddie Hamada. Together along with some friends they would travel to another island and golf a few rounds but always made it back for dinner. the 808 will miss this fine person. again my condolences to mrs. yonamine who in her own right is a super counselor now at Iolani but spent many many years at Waipahu along with her husband.

Great to see the Beast in my Father’s House on Sunday.
Keep the guy in your prayers for a quick recovery on some injuries that’s nagging him, including one from a cheap shot “chop block”.

Again congrats to Ryan on a great True Freshman Year for the Big Sky Champs..

  34. FloridaTed December 16, 2008 2:41 am

    Pride (273, last blog),

Excellent analysis of the O-Line situation. You’ve shed a bright light on it and everything makes sense. We should all lay off the coaches and let them coach for awhile.

I agree, with what they were given, they did very well.

    Thanks, Tsaiko-Brother.

Time to sleep a little, good night everybody.

  35. bighilofan2 December 16, 2008 3:26 am

    Good morning Tsaikos.

too bad i missed da old guy fight, Las Vegas. 🙂

    that was reallll good!

    DAVID HAFOKA,
    welcome to da Warriors!!!!!
anudda big brudda to push around.
    heh heh

    Go Warriors!!!!

  36. Ralph December 16, 2008 3:36 am

i hope more of our Hawaii athletes would commit early, whether to Hawaii or a mainland university, the recruiting classes are filling up and an athlete might find himself with a promise but no scholarship available-to late, snooze you lose. UH is almost maxed out, some of the mainland colleges have more than the 25 scholarships allowed expecting grayshirts or non qualifiers.

  37. Ralph December 16, 2008 3:43 am

UH has 23 commitments to date, mac says he is saving one and possibly two scholies…that’s it 25. grayshirts and non qualifiers will alter the list and if the NCAA sanctions UH for its graduation rate, the numbers changes again…

  38. bighilofan2 December 16, 2008 3:54 am

    Ralph
    howzit.

I’m hoping the rumor mentioned, about Chizzy decomitin is not true.
I like the sound of a rb named Chizzy. Colorado State is a great place. In the boonies between Cheyenne and Denver. If you like to ski, have quiet country life.

Now if you like surf, go nuts over football, Hawaii is the place fo yu!

But actually, I was talking to some State workers yesterday and I asked them if they were going to watch the Irish, and they didn’t know what I was talking about.

    Talk about backwater people: 🙄

  39. Ralph December 16, 2008 4:05 am

big hilo go, hawaiian and mokulele offering $31 airfare from honolulu to kona, one way thru december 31

  40. Ralph December 16, 2008 4:06 am

  41. Ralph December 16, 2008 4:09 am

someone posted that december 17 is NLI date for mid year juco grads. that’s tomorrow, so we’ll see who is willing to put their name on the dotted line…

  42. bighilofan2 December 16, 2008 4:10 am

    hiyha Ralph.
great prices for Kona and Kauai people.

    ST
GREAT read in the HA about Hafoka.
And Funaki. Inoke is one super class act.

    Happy Birthday Max!

  43. wafan December 16, 2008 4:24 am

    Good morning everyone!

  44. bighilofan2 December 16, 2008 4:24 am

So, tomorrow is NLI day for JUCOs? Great.

I hope we gettin what Brian and Alex are looking for

  45. wafan December 16, 2008 4:25 am

    Pride . . .

Thank you for the information you posted on the last blog. Good stuff that makes more sense of what is happening now with the OL.

Almost as bad as a cheap thriller with all the twists and turns.

  46. wafan December 16, 2008 4:27 am

    13 degrees. 31 degrees.

That is what is it right now and what it will be about noon today.

Tonight — more snow on the way. Geez.

This last week of school for 2008 is going to be brutal.

  47. wafan December 16, 2008 4:29 am

I am thinking the rain you folks are getting at home is better than the snow and ice we are getting here.

Anyone want to trade homes for a few days, weeks, months, years, decades?

  48. bighilofan2 December 16, 2008 4:30 am

    Pride,

ditto your excellent post 273 last blog.

so wat? should I hang myself wit all da perplexities? 😀

the worst part yu neva mention is a 6″3″ guy actually turning out to be 5’11”. just looks taller because da bugga is so huge! 😀

  49. wafan December 16, 2008 4:31 am

Time to warm up the van — 10 minutes or so should thaw out the windshield enough to drive.

  50. wafan December 16, 2008 4:33 am

    Hi bhf2!

Dang. It is kind of cold.

    See ya!

  51. bighilofan2 December 16, 2008 5:00 am

    hi wafan

just saw the news about Manchester NH and all da ice. I remember those days! pretty country the northeast this time of year! all white except for the slush.

now which part Washington yu stay? you close by Whistler? Thats where I’d be going for XMas if i was not here.

  52. bighilofan2 December 16, 2008 5:47 am

    hoboy

    the irish are coming
    the irish are coming

    yeee haaaaaaaaaa!!!!

we’re gonna keep their streak intact!!

    Go Warriors!!!!

  53. bighilofan2 December 16, 2008 5:50 am

    and about recruits.

its not if you get em, its what you do wit em.

Daniel Teo-Nesheim. Big HPU DE went to Washington, playing DE there, terrorized Colt last year at the stadium. you can have all the good players you like, but if you no put da package together, no can no can!

same thing fo us. coaches gotta do something with the recruits and players. we all gotta do our jobs!

  54. Garret December 16, 2008 5:52 am

Momo called me last night from the basketball game to tell me that the jersey was ready. He asked me, “So, when are you going to come to Hawaii to pick it up?” Heh.

  55. Garret December 16, 2008 5:52 am

Welcome to the Warriors David Hafoka!

  56. Garret December 16, 2008 5:55 am

    Ralph,

Momo is regularly up past midnight. He and Mrs. Momo also normally are awake early–Mrs. Momo has normally read the Advertiser by 6:30am.

  57. Garret December 16, 2008 5:58 am

I hope that U-Dub doesn’t go after too many of UH’s recruits…or that they try but the recruits stay committed to UH.

  58. Garret December 16, 2008 6:03 am

Not that many Ohio State fans are planning to go to the Fiesta Bowl.

Interest, or the lack of it, is such that bowl tickets will go on sale to the general public here Wednesday — something that almost never happens, according to Bill Jones, Ohio State’s assistant athletic director for ticketing and premium seating. Jones said OSU’s bowl ticket allotment, even the 36,000 it might have for a Rose Bowl, are almost always snapped up by donors and season-ticket holders before the general public ever gets a shot.

What’s killing the Fiesta Bowl buzz?

Ohio State’s recent success, its lackluster offense this year, the dreadful economy and even the date of the bowl (on the first day of the university’s winter quarter) are all getting some of the blame. Here, a 10-2 season wasn’t something to celebrate.

  59. Garret December 16, 2008 6:05 am

It is too bad for the New Orleans economy that it doesn’t appear that enough Utah fans will be traveling for the Sugar Bowl. I enjoyed my trip there and all of the shopkeepers and locals I ran in to appreciated the boost to their economy that Hawaii fans gave.

It’s the Utah fans that present the question mark.

“Are they willing to travel to New Orleans? We don’t know,” said Jennifer Swanson of TicketsNow.com. “You don’t really hear about those fervent Utah fans. Ticket sales can depend on so many things, and that’s one factor.”

When the Utes blew out Pittsburgh in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl, the stands appeared mostly crimson. This time, even with another undefeated season, fans may not be as excited about driving 1,900 miles as they were about driving 660 miles.

  60. Garret December 16, 2008 6:08 am

Utah had 7,500 tickets left from its 17,500 ticket allotment as of Friday morning. They then made it available to the general public, and most of the 3,000 tickets sold were bought by Alabama fans!

The Crimson Tide sold off all of its allotment of 17,500. Utah has not yet done so, and it presents fans with their only primary ticket market opportunity.

Utah pre-sold 10,000 tickets to its donors, then put the remaining 7,500 on sale Friday morning. In addition, Alabama sent out an email to its students and donors encouraging them to purchase tickets from the U of U site.

Roughly 3,000 sold, Lassiter said, with more than 2,400 (80 percent) being bought by Alabama fans. He was surprised the tickets weren’t all gobbled up by the Tide.

  61. mano1 December 16, 2008 6:23 am

Garret-or anyone else know if UH FB/Sports will gain additional facilities improvement due to the State’s CIP ?

“Nimitz Highway made the projects list, on tap for a new surface and new street lights. UH Manoa’s Campus Center is getting more meeting rooms and a rec center for students. UH dorms will get millions for renovations, new security cameras and better locks.
It’s all part of the state’s nearly two billion dollar public projects plan on the fast-track to stimulate the economy.”

  62. Garret December 16, 2008 6:36 am

    mano1,

UH Athletics will get some of that funding I believe–WassupDoc has been keeping us informed about the developments.

If an insanity defense is employed, does it cover one’s legal counsel, too?

  95. bighilofan2 December 16, 2008 7:04 am

    neva seen sumtinwong long time

  96. protector December 16, 2008 7:04 am

I’m impressed with the recruits so far. I don’t know that we’ll ever have a guy as talented, savvy & versatile as Ryan Mouton, but we can hope. It seems every cornerback & safety coming in has comparable speed (to Ryan), but we’ll have to see if it translates to “game speed”. Also, has anyone heard further word about Mageo de-committing??

  97. bighilofan2 December 16, 2008 7:06 am

good one penguin. if you specifically referring to the Ill idiot, garans ball baranz.

  98. bighilofan2 December 16, 2008 7:08 am

but if you waz referring to me, i object!

    heh heh

  99. bighilofan2 December 16, 2008 7:13 am

when I’m right ova da tunnel and lookin at the players, really obvious to tell da big big buggaz and the tall speedy buggaz. I going miss the big seniors. i’m really proud of those guyz. they gave their all for us.
i’m hoping they’ll have one super happy memory next week.

  100. bighilofan2 December 16, 2008 7:14 am

    ok gotta go.

hi ho hiho. have a great day errybody!!!

    Go Warriors.

    esme wooossssssssssshhhhhhhhhh

  101. penguin December 16, 2008 7:16 am

Filibusters aren’t allowed in courtrooms, but imagine the billing opportunities? “Somebody” would be outrageously successful!

  102. Stretch December 16, 2008 7:18 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

It will be interesting to see how Mack passes out the scholies because there is no way every players who commits here is getting one. Unless it is known that some of the verbals previously given are not coming??

  103. Jay December 16, 2008 7:26 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!

  104. Kekoa December 16, 2008 7:38 am

Good Morning to all Tsaiko’s, even you, BHF2.

Everytime I’m enjoying a good sleep, I can count on BHF2 making enuff noise to wake up da dead. Geez Big Fan…you get up before da roosters and crow louder then the entire Wessai Chaptah on steroids!

  105. wena December 16, 2008 7:48 am

    Wafan–
Snow!!! You’re so lucky. I wish there was a place on Oahu where we can go play in the “snow”. I bet that would be a good business. But I can imagine all the injuries on the slippery ice.

  106. Bulla December 16, 2008 7:49 am

    good morning Tsaikos,

Stretch, you’re right, and scholies offered and scholies issued is a lot like the airlines/hotel industry. you overbook, and then see where the chips fall.

some athletes will be amazed to get calls from the coach saying, ‘well, the recruiting climate has changed and your offer is no longer available, or we really want you but the scholarship is not available, or we think you need some time to further develop physically, or we have you in our charts at making a contribution down the road…’

interesting news coming our of Kapolei, that LB was a stud all season, and a monstah to bring down when he carried the ball on offense….if USC is chasing him, he’s got things rolling now…….

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

  107. Kekoa December 16, 2008 7:49 am

Yep, dat sly SC coach “Ken Norton, Jr.” slipped in during the storm and checked film on Smione Vehikite. The 6’1″ 243lb w/4.6 speed – LB/FB for Kapolei is on their Xmas list.

  108. Bulla December 16, 2008 7:51 am

    BHF2,

whew, too much coffee, red bull, patron or all of the above, haha.

you are THE RECORD, just for the record.

congrats, on what i don’t know, but congrats.

  109. SIMPLE December 16, 2008 7:51 am

koakane: If Lillian Yonamine is the same Lillian Yonamine I know, she’s a college and career counselor at Moanalua now. What a wonderful lady — she wasn’t a counselor when I was there, but I’ve gotten to know her the past four years. I met her husband earlier this year, when we were both proctoring the ACT. My condolences to her and her family.

  135. XxFaithxX December 16, 2008 9:18 am

If the reason why Vehikite was not recruited by many colleges, it might because of grades. Why USC offered a scholie? Like most top end BCS schools, they have the academic support system in place (Kinda like Kohler and Arizona last year) to help the fringe players qualify. Also, being a private university helps a lot too with the entrance requirements…..JMHO

  136. XxFaithxX December 16, 2008 9:20 am

In addition, it might not be his grades at all….it could be as simple as not taking Algebra II…….UHM requires it unlike the majority of D1A colleges….correct me if I am wrong.

  137. cheepono December 16, 2008 9:22 am

so who’s the big recruit bhf2 is talking about?
bigger than hafoka and from the mainland?

  138. Uce2 December 16, 2008 9:41 am

The best athletes Hawaii has to offer are of either Samoan or Tongan ancestry. I am not trying to be racist or controversial. To see whether this makes sense at all just look at international rugby. All of the top stars are either Samoan or Tongan. Football is a lot like rugby, an exercise in controlled violence.

If Fat Mack and his crew had any understanding of football, and of the principles promoted by these sports, removed of course from bias and favorites, Fat Mack and crew would have recognized the division I talent in Kapolei FB/MLB Simione Vehikite (Tongan) before Ken Norton of USC recognized this talent.

Vehikite is built like Rey Maualuga (Samoan) and has athleticism similar to Maualuga. Vehikite is also similar to Manti Teo (Samoan) in athleticism and build.

USC, a school who is concerned with one thing only – being the best, understands this and this is why they are here to offer Vehikite a full scholarship. If USC can find Vehikite despite USC being more than 2500 miles from Hawaii, my question is this: why wasn’t the UH able to “find” Vehikite?

Could UH’s inability to find players like Vehikite have anything to do with bias and favortism on the part of its coaching staff? With UH’s coaches being former community college players, it makes sense that these coaches would tend to favor community college players. The problem with this approach, however, is apparent. UH ends up getting the scraps.

Since UH has demonstrated it does not know how to identify top quality local talent, I offer the names of the following current high school football players as Division I players other Pac 10 schools will pick up if UH is too stupid to pick up:

    1. Patrick Mauga – MLB Aiea
    2. Apelu Sooalo – RB Farrington
    3. Troy Matautia – RB Waipahu
    4. Jeff Mauga – lineman Aiea
    5. Higgins – QB St Louis

You gotta be kidding??!!! What has he done? He played against high school caliber players all season long. Let’s see what happens when draft day arrives. You wanna see a real linebacker – look at Rey Maualuga of USC or Laurantis from Ohio State. Mouton? Who’s that?

Is there a Call the Coach show tonight? I thought they ended a couple of weeks ago.

Will there be a similar set-up for basketball this year? I know that from time to time a baseball CTC show has been held at the sports bar in downtown Honolulu – cannot remember the name but it’s below street level in the high rise at the corner of Bishop & Hotel. . Very difficult to see and hear if you’re not able to gett a seat directly in front of the broadcast area because the show is not amplified as it is at the Willows.

  145. bstunna2002 December 16, 2008 10:00 am

uce2 what are you talking about half those players on your list won’t qualify because of grades as a university who has lost scholarships because of the apr system they have now coaches should only offer those who are taking care of their work on the field and in the classroom. Remember these guys aren’t just going to school to play football they are going to further their education first and foremost.

  146. Uce2 December 16, 2008 10:01 am

    ryan-
No. I’m not lost. Once in a while I like to pop in to see what the peasants are talking about. If you need a “bro”, look elsewhere.

  147. takoboy December 16, 2008 10:03 am

so you’re all for backing the samoans and tongans, (no problem w/ that), but then you namedrop james laurinitis, one of the most overhyped linebackers in the last 5 years. roll da film and watch him get dominated in a bcs game for da third year in a row. and when protector names a cb/safety, you bring up 2 lb’s, BRILLIANT….

OTOH, i have no problem with your list, haven’t seen the 2 aiea kids, but those 2 rb’s look like studs. we could use either one of them…

  148. Uce2 December 16, 2008 10:04 am

    bstunna2002-
you must be from the DOE with access to confidential information re these kids, their grades, SATs, etc. …either that or you are making a lot of assumptions…and you know what they say about making assumptions…

  149. Uce2 December 16, 2008 10:06 am

    takoboy-
getting picked up top 10 in the upcoming draft hardly qualifies laurinitis as overhyped. mouton, on the other hand, will be lucky to get picked up at all. mouton will be picked up as a free agent, or toward the end like colt.

let’s see that is 18 of the 29 recruits that are of pacific islander ethnicity. i did also leave off stutzmann and shutter because i wasn’t sure if those two local boys had any p.i. in them.

so where do you draw your conclusions from? i am not certain but some of these fine men may or may not be academic qualifiers at this local university. uh is not so easy to gain entrance as compared to many private institutions. that is a fact.

assumptions about the racial connections to football.

call it whatever you want…but in my opinion if you want speed, you have to go with mainland kids…..in a political correct way…our guys of color.

i think it was prevalent in the mainland vs. hawaii bowl. the mainland folks have much much much more speed. and as you know speed kills.

want fast recievers and rb? focus hard on the mainland.

would anyone in hawaii pass on a percy harvins, knowshawn moreno, and that heisman “always a bridesmaid never a bride” from arkanasas. I think not, and if you would i have some property to sell you. the key is, recruit mainland talent.

    just my 2 cents =)

  158. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 16, 2008 10:20 am

on the contrary, maybe its just that the mainland you have a much much MUCH larger pool of people. therefore competition, gene pool etc etc is larger and more competitive.

therefore the laws of probability are in your favor that you can find a great athlete w/in such a large base.

  159. WarriorMojo December 16, 2008 10:23 am

Uce2, we’re all already brothers (and sisters) on this board. That’s why this board is so strong.

So what I want to ask you, brother, is: what kine axe you get for grind? Playing the race card with this coaching staff makes you look silly. What is your real issue? Be honest now.

  160. Uce2 December 16, 2008 10:24 am

I didn’t say I wasn’t, only that I wasn’t trying to be. You misunderstand the difference between the two. Facts are facts, unlike statistics.

The best baseball players of all time happen to be black. Same with the fastest athletes on the planet. Same with the best basketball players.

If MMA paid enough, which it currently doesn’t, more blacks, Samoans, and Tongans would enter and dominate this arena too.

  161. bstunna2002 December 16, 2008 10:28 am

uce2 are you mad at UH for not giving you a schollie. Reality is your making assumptions as well. No I’m not privy to the information re these kids grades, sats and all that but if you think that Mack and co. Have no clue what they are doing your sorely mistaken there is always a reason that some kids aren’t offered. I mean I believe Sooalo won’t qualify cause he moved from American Samoa, Vehikite moved from Maui last summer so maybe that’s why he was off the radar until recently.

  162. al December 16, 2008 10:30 am

    letsgowarriors….you swearing too?

  168. Cheyah! December 16, 2008 10:39 am

JC players are usually brought in to fulfill immediate needs. Why? JC players are usually more game ready or adjusted to college level. We lose a lot this year to graduation which is why they have recruited the JC. As of today, we picked up Hafoka who I believe is Tongan.
As for the high school kids, we picked up some good local kids including Lopati (who I think is Samoan). So, I really don’t understand the racial or favoritism issue here. UH has offered kids of all ethnicity and if Simione Vehikite wasn’t offered, I guarantee it wasn’t because he was Tongan. I wish Simione Vehikite the best!

    Go Warriors!

  169. bstunna2002 December 16, 2008 10:41 am

well let’s see it’s not April so it can’t be April fools day. C’mon Higgins the best QB in the lot what about Manley who at least led his team to the State Championship.

  171. Uce2 December 16, 2008 10:43 am

It’s about making smart decisions. To win, you gotta make smart decisions. The decisions being made are not smart. Hafoka is an excellent decision but the Hafoka decision will not offset the rest of the poor decision making that has been taking place at Manoa.

Okay. My time is up. Good luck to you all. My statement re Mouton stands.

  176. Uce2 December 16, 2008 10:52 am

    bstunna2002:
I will overlook the ignorance flowing from your post re manley. i can tell you either have not played football or that you are not a former qb.

in either case, manley had better receivers and hence the state championship for leilehua and not st louis.

in terms of a qb skill sets, higgins has the better skill sets. hands down. as soon as st louis can get better receivers on the field, this will become abundantly clear to you and the rest of the state.

  177. XxFaithxX December 16, 2008 10:59 am

Didn’t STL have BOTH Gonzales (Sp) and Stuz II this year? How much better receivers will higgins need? Sure, Gonzo was hurt, but its not like STL is with out talent.

  181. The Big Ballah December 16, 2008 11:22 am

I know Coach Hernandez personally. No coach does more for his players. If you want your kids to go to college-he has all the contacts with mainland coaches. He works tirelessly to produce high quality highlight videos for his players and helps to get them noticed-all on his own time and his own dime. He told me this past summer that Vehikite is a stud, but he could not find ant film on his junior year at Lahainaluna, so it would be tough to get the word out on him as a senior. He said the kid would be under the radar all season until he could produce his senior highlight tape and distribute it to colleges here in Hawaii and to coaches on the mainland after the season. He sent it out just two weeks ago-their season ended 3 weeks ago-and Eastern Arizona and Arizona Western were the first to bite-they opened their mail first, I guess. Now the word is out, and USC is on him. The UH staff had his video just like eveybody else-in fact, they probably had it sooner-and they were not interested. So here is a kid who Hernandez says is a big time player who played out of position last year (DL), and is only now getting attention. Great for Vehikite. Remember, Kapolei only played in one game on TV this year, and Vehikite had 10 carries for 106 yards and a touchdown on offense, and 12 solo tackles on defense vs. Farrington, playing both ways, so hardly anyone saw him play. According to Hernandez, Ken Norton Jr. took one look at the video and was sold on his talent and ability. What did he see that UH didn’t???

Big Ballah the problem is he was under the radar without video and no one scouted Maui or he himself and his Maui coaches did not send info to UH…unfortunately UH is probably maxed out on promised scholies a while back and already had visit commitments of 10 to the Cincy game…With Hafoka I believe UH is at 23 commitments and he like the last 3 commitments came to visit during the cincy game…its unfortunate, but not all commitments will qualify and not all commitments always sign on the dotted line so there is a last minute chance he will be a warrior…

  187. BillB December 16, 2008 12:21 pm

Wasn’t Lofa Tatupu interested in coming to UH. Nobody picked up on this at UH and he ended up at USC after a freshman year at Maine. Was all Pac 10, All American LB. Now stud middle linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks.

Can someone verify if the UH connection information is correct.

Similarity to Vehikite if this is correct.

Remember how the Advertiser had a byline strike? It looks like the Associated Press is having something similar.

The Newspaper Guild-Communications Workers of America claimed tonight that reporters and photographers at the Associated Press “are withholding bylines and personal equipment in protest over the news agency’s proposals that would threaten job security, dramatically raise medical costs, and freeze wages.”

The protests come as talks continue between AP and the News Media Guild. The union represents 1,400 editorial, technology and support staff at AP.

According to AP spokesman Paul Colford, “AP’s contract with the News Media Guild specifies: ‘An employee’s byline shall not be used over his/her protest.’

  189. J-Dog December 16, 2008 12:33 pm

What about Joe Stewart? and what’s the buzz on Lee Agguire?

  190. Garret December 16, 2008 12:35 pm

The Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News are only going to do home delivery for newspapers on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. The rest of the days people can read it online or go to a store if they want a paper copy. I wonder if either or both Honolulu papers will eventually go this route…

Detroit Media Partnership CEO Dave Hunke, publisher of the Free Press, said that starting in spring 2009, both the Free Press and the Detroit News — also operated by the partnership — would deliver to homes only on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, the heaviest days for advertising and the most popular papers for readers. But the newspapers will remain available seven days a week at stores, newsstands and coin boxes across Michigan.

  191. Garret December 16, 2008 12:36 pm

They are taking this drastic measure in part because they have two newspapers in Detroit…and I think that Detroit has a lot more people than Honolulu.

for the foreseeable future, keep Detroit one of the nation’s few remaining two-newspaper towns.

  192. J-Dog December 16, 2008 12:36 pm

Do most “solid” JC verbal commits usually sign in December? Or do they usually wait till Feb?

  193. J-Dog December 16, 2008 12:37 pm

Those earning their AA degree in December that is.

  194. Garret December 16, 2008 12:38 pm

I loved watching Lui Fuga play! Interesting that he lives in San Diego…if I ever run into him at a local event or somewhere like L&L I’d have a lot of questions for him! I wonder if we could get him to a Calf Call at Kings or Ono Ono?

  195. Garret December 16, 2008 12:39 pm

    J-Dog,

Most who earn their AA degree in December sign in December and enroll in January at the schools they signed with. Their ability to go through Spring Practice and get into the program earlier is a BIG advantage in the recruiting process, so not signing would limit their chances.

  196. Garret December 16, 2008 12:40 pm

So, after tomorrow we should have less to worry about, since at least some of the JC commits will sign and there situations will have been settled.

  197. Garret December 16, 2008 12:42 pm

I’m going to post this free play link early because I’d like to share it. This will be in January’s National Defense Magazine, which will be in stores next week. Some Tsaiko is quoted in the article.

Anheuser-Busch Sales of Hawaii announced that it has reached its goal of $100,000 in its “Get In The Game” promotion, which raised funds for University of Hawai‘i Athletics Department facility improvements. We are very proud to make this donation to help upgrade the UH athletic facilities,” Chad Hoffmeister, President and General Manager for Anheuser-Busch Sales of Hawaii, said.

“We are truly appreciative of Anheuser-Busch’s commitment to UH Athletics and its generous donation of these funds to help improve our facilities,” Jim Donovan, UH Athletics Director, said. “As a Corporate Partner, they have supported many UH causes and initiatives that have benefited all aspects of our sports programs.”

Thank you to everyone for the congratulations! It is good publicity for my company and I passed the information along to the companies we’ve been discussing things with. My sponsor (the National Science Foundation) is very happy that they were mentioned!

I’m glad that the reporter included the analogy that I got from this blog. It literally is like the suggestion I got here went in the article word-for-word!

  268. Garret December 16, 2008 9:56 pm

Miami’s coach talked about why they moved Samson to G and used the former Cowboys C for 8 plays in their last game.

(On how the offensive line graded with Al Johnson at center versus Samson Satele at center) “Al played eight plays which I kind of thought was going to be a little bit more. Obviously, we wish it was a little bit more. He played eight plays in the game. They actually both played pretty well. We’ve been practicing that way the whole week with Al taking reps at center with the first group so that Chad (Pennington) and that exchange can happen and Samson playing without. It’s been pretty good the entire week. I thought during the course of the game there was absolutely not a beat missed which is what I would expect putting Al in the game. Mentally, he’s tremendous. Physically, he did some good things during the course of the game. You just wish there was a little bit bigger body of work there.”

(On why he played only eight plays) “I put him in there in the first half of the game and he ran out the first half. In other words, he was out there for the rest of the half. When the half ended, Al was on the field for that final draw I think to Ronnie (Brown). Then when we went in, we came back and we knew we wanted to start the other way back with Samson (Satele) again. In the fourth quarter of the game I just really didn’t want to mess with the center-quarterback exchange.”

  269. Garret December 16, 2008 9:58 pm

Oregon State’s #1 and #3 RBs will miss their bowl game…the #2 guy is a freshman and is the only other RB they have with experience.

A major blow to the Oregon State football team’’s running game occurred when third-string running back Jeremy Francis left the team to attend to his sick mother Marilyn Scott, OSU officials said Tuesday.

Francis, a junior, went through finals last week and returned home to Winter Park, Fla., over the weekend. How long he’ll be gone is unknown, but he won’t be available for the Sun Bowl.

Normally losing the No. 3 running back isn’t a big deal, but the Beavers are most likely without starter Jacquizz Rodgers as he recovers from a second-degree AC joint sprain.

That leaves redshirt freshman Ryan McCants as the only experienced running back on the roster.

Free play link time. Please ignore my next 5 posts if you do not want to get the off-topic stuff.

There is a move towards a $3 trillion bailout that would enable just about everyone in the US to refinance their mortgage with a 30-year fixed 4.5% loan! That would give US consumers more money to spend for the long-term and it would drive up property values. This would be better than giving out checks to everyone again, as those checks don’t do any long-term good.

The slowing market for new cars has resulted in Toyota delaying when they will start operation at their new Prius production plant in Mississippi. The plant is already 90% done and Toyota has already spent $300 mil on it, but now the plant won’t begin operation until 2012 or later. That is really too bad because I’m sure that the people in Mississippi would have liked those jobs!

    kama krab…
here’s the skinny on the nli

midyear jc’ers (only) dec 17 this applies only to those jc’ers eligible to enroll in january or spring semester/trimester to a d1 program by virtue of achieving an aa degree or was previously a ncaa qualifier out of hs; colt brennan for example.

regular nli (all others) feb 4 obviously this would be everyone else.

    kymrykauai ~

If you call ST – he prolly could arrange something if you are planning to be on island. Coach Mack likes to make ST think he has some media influence.

Seriously. Let him know what you have in mind, mebbe he can help.

  282. MeiLing December 16, 2008 11:48 pm

    “To dream the impossible dream
    To fight the unbeatable foe…”

  301. wafan December 17, 2008 5:05 am

    bhf2 . . .

How are you doing?!?!?! Good to see you are back after that small computer problem. Next time just show ’em who is boss and just do a Coach Mack. HA!

Left my van running 9-minutes before the windshield and doors showed a sign of thawing. Worse part is I could not enter through the front doors — they were frozen shut. I had to crawl through the back hatch.

Kind of glad I do not have to scrape the ice and snow, defrost the doors, and slip and slide my way to school. BUT, I still do not want to go to school for more days in June. Wah.

  302. bighilofan2 December 17, 2008 5:07 am

    Wafan,
funny. XMas 69. got the job in NH. living 30 days per diem downtown famous hotel Manchester NH. met a new friend , coworker, wit an old car. we worked late the nite before and he parked his car in the street parking meter. snow all nite. snow melted, ice stuck to his muffler. he started the car the next morning and tried to drive away, and his muffler got pulled off, so he backs up the car to the exact spot of his muffler, he digs under the car and he’s under his car to wire up the muffler, and the snow plow comes along and buries/blocks the driver side of the car.

i came along and herd him yelling. 😆 mylo james

    memories!!!!

  303. wafan December 17, 2008 5:10 am

About 7″ on the ground and it is still coming down hard with compact snow and ice underneath. This is getting bad.

It will be fun to see all the clowns with SUV’s and 4-wheel drives who think they can go faster. Yep, they can! They just cannot stop any faster than the rest of us so they usually end up in a ditch.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

When the truckers are going slowly that should be a clue to others.

  304. bighilofan2 December 17, 2008 5:11 am

    wafan,
    i remembah doze kine dayz.

    South Puget Sound.

Some of those people were stuck on the ski lift chairs for several hours. Yes, they were exposed to the weather. Yikes! That must have been brutally cold. Our weather is coming out from Canada.

  309. wafan December 17, 2008 5:20 am

    bhf2 . . .

I think my computer took lessons from your old computer. HA!

    bhf2 . . .

Hi. Sorry I had to take care of a few things outside.

Around Olympia is where I am. When I first moved here it was a nice little college-type town with lots of trees and open areas. Now, lots of buildings and roads. So sad.

If I ever move again in Washington it will probably be out further away from the cities. Too crowded, noisy and expensive. Oh well. The alternative is to move back home. I wonder how it all plays out?

  321. wafan December 17, 2008 6:15 am

    Note to self.

No wea rubbah slipah ou’si wen ge da kine on top da groun. Frozenated my toses.

  322. jm2375 December 17, 2008 6:20 am

Good morning bhf2 & wafan!! Waking up da chikkins again bighilo?

wafan – I feel your pain. Washington DC – half an inch of snow on the ground and everyone’s allowed to come in late, schools close, traffic comes to standstill….

  323. wafan December 17, 2008 6:21 am

The last time I visited Whistler was 20+ years ago during the summer. It was absolutely beautiful.

It is a good thing you are still with us after getting lost in the snow at night. Dang! Your buddy was sure “nice” guy. Not!

While you were visiting that area did you take a walk across the Capilano Bridge or visit Stanley Park/Zoo? Those are some of my favorite areas in BC. Out in Victoria I like all of the gardens and Victoria city. Ride the horse-drawn carriages for a cool tour, too!

  324. jm2375 December 17, 2008 6:22 am

Eh HA tekkies – da clock stay fast again!!! fix em!!!

  325. jm2375 December 17, 2008 6:24 am

  326. wafan December 17, 2008 6:25 am

    Hey, jm234389.98938423462384923429!

    FInally up?

Only 1/2″? Funny how normally intelligent people act like aggressive animalistic idiots when it snows. They are late so they go faster (into the ditch). HA!

Me? I stay home and venture out only when it is absolutely necessary.

  327. Kekoa December 17, 2008 6:57 am

BHF2 ~ Let me know when you want to ski Whistler again. I get Condo there you can use. I make special price with all day pass for Gondola and lifts free if you bring your own rescue rope ladder!

  328. Ralph December 17, 2008 10:40 am
