Japan Warriors

Running back Nate Ilaoa’s football career apparently does not have an expiration date.

Ilaoa is among six former Warriors who will compete in an all-star game in Japan next month. Ilaoa’s last UH was season was in 2006. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2007. He was cut before the 2007 started, then signed with Columbus of the Arena Football League. That team folded at the end of that year.

Last month, UH was invited to compete in the Japan Bowl. According to the format, UH will have two coaches and six former Warriors on a team with all stars from Japan’s professional league. UNLV will have the same number of representatives on the opposing team.

UH associate head coach Rich Miano and graduate assistant Inoke Funaki will coach the Warrior team, which includes Ilaoa, linebacker Blaze Soares, defensive tackle Tuika Tufaga, offensive linemen Tala Esera and Bronson Tiwanak, and safety Spencer Smith.

The UH group leaves July 2, and the game will be played July 11.

  2. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 12:27 am

ST, isn’t there a former Warrior who plays pro football in Japan right now?

He wrote a memoir, published by Watermark in Hawaii.

    Can’t remember his name.

  3. Curt June 11, 2011 12:28 am

    G’morning Stephen and gigi.

  4. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 12:29 am

We were talking about ballroom dancing in yesterday’s blog — an athletic sport, too, I bet!

Here’s the link to a photo of me and hubby dancing the East coast swing on New Year’s Eve 1995:

  5. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 12:31 am

Ian Sample — is that the ex-Warrior who plays pro football in Japan, ST?

    Is he still there?

  6. ai-eee-soos June 11, 2011 12:32 am

    mornin’

  7. Curt June 11, 2011 12:33 am

Shake ’em up tonight gigi. It’s time for this fella to attack the pillow with a vengance. Hasta la vista.

  8. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2011 12:33 am

Ian Sample is still in Japan.

Former UH center Derek Faavi and defensive end Kevin Jackson also still play there.

We’re taking dance lessons for my daughter’s wedding.

  10. ai-eee-soos June 11, 2011 12:35 am

Good to see these guys still playing.

” UH associate head coach Rich Miano and graduate assistant Inoke Funaki will lead the Warrior team, which includes Ilaoa, linebacker Blaze Soares, defensive tackle Tuika Tufaga, offensive linemen Tala Esera and Bronson Tiwanak, and safety Spencer Smith. “

    G’nite Curt.

  12. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 12:37 am

Oh, ST, tell somebody to take pics of you and Wena dancing.

    And then post them here!

  13. ai-eee-soos June 11, 2011 12:37 am

ST: Can you ask Spencer Smith if he tried out for the Colonials? If he didn’t, he sure

missed out on an opportunity for the UFL.

  14. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2011 12:38 am

Spencer did not try out with the Colonials.

  15. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2011 12:40 am

I had to amend that to say Miano and Funaki will coach the team. While Miano is in great shape, don’t want to give the impression that a 48-year-old man will be playing safety.

  16. ai-eee-soos June 11, 2011 12:41 am

    ST: ????

” The UH group leaves June 2, and the game will be played June 11. “

  17. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 12:42 am

    It should be past tense.

    The game is over, right?

  18. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 12:42 am

    pau, finished

  19. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 12:43 am

    unless you meant July

  20. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2011 12:44 am

    Whoops That should be July.

  21. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2011 12:50 am

    I fixed it.

  22. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2011 12:51 am

It appears that Colorado and Washington are the biggest headaches for UH in recruiting.

  23. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 12:55 am

I just wonder about Nate’s ability to play at his former level.

He stopped playing after 2007, so isn’t he out of shape?

  24. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 12:57 am

Every time I hear Japan and football mentioned, I think of Ian Sample and his visit to the Warrior Beat — and how the Tsaikos all criticized his book.

I felt sorry for the poor guy.

  25. SteveM June 11, 2011 12:57 am

Good to hear Nate Ilaoa and Blaze Soares might play again. Good luck to them and Tuika Tufaga, Tala Esera, Bronson Tiwanak, and Spencer Smith!

  26. ai-eee-soos June 11, 2011 1:08 am

    re # 22.

yeah, that sark guy is one sneaky poacher.

and, normchow might now have some leverage, being that he is located in LDS country.

  27. SteveM June 11, 2011 1:09 am

I missed the earlier discussion on dancing and the Warrior Lounge at Hale Koa.

gigi — I’m surprised you do ballroom dancing. Dunno why, but surprised. 🙂

But Curt’s right about the Warrior Lounge. Took my mainland friend and his wife to dinner and went to the lounge a couple years ago. They do ballroom dancing and enjoyed it. Went for a karaoke night and there were people dancing a lot too. Depends on the song and not so much the singer 🙂 Dance floor is small though.

I liked the closed position cha-cha but too clumsy for it now. Always wanted to learn the Electric Slide. Now, as for classmate Al….

  28. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 1:13 am

I always wanted to learn the Electric Slide.

SteveM, I lack a good sense of rhythm, so I am glad hubby has it. He guides me very well.

  29. pcwarrior June 11, 2011 1:13 am

Good to see such a great turn out at the camps!

Good luck to the Warriors going to Japan and all the Warriors in Japan.

    Jus pau work. G’nite y’all

  30. Kekoa June 11, 2011 1:14 am

Gigi ~ That’s a mighty fancy lookin’ black mumu’u you are wearing. Hubby looks uncomfortable in a coat ‘n tie.

Once upon a time, many moons ago…fellow Tsaiko *HowLee* and yours truly danced on our own American Bandstand style TV show. Good fun taking the popular dances of the day to the next level. Nothing better after our ball games on Friday nite.

HoweLee DJ’d the radio show that was the follow-up to the TV program on Sat. mornings. He spun records for the teens that called in their dedications on the request line.

The perfect job for a guy who could never carry a tune even if you gave him a shopping cart to put it in! Hehehe…and dance? Uh..not hardly.

  31. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 1:20 am

Kekoa, I hope you didn’t dance together.

    There must’ve been girls around!

    lol

  32. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 1:25 am

    Gnite, all.

Interesting how the top recruits at the camp have offers from Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Arizona…but not UH. At least Rasmussen and his family go to UH games and Failauga’s Dad is a big UH fan.

  43. Garret June 11, 2011 3:43 am

I’m glad that UH has reps playing and coaching in Japan. I hope that they have a great time. Their visit is nice exposure for UH.

Dunno why UH has not offered the top guys but hope they get on it. Dang. Playing catch up is difficult!

  49. wafan June 11, 2011 6:20 am

Why do so many Americans insist on minpronouncing Iraq, Iran, Qatar and Italian? Is it stupidity, ignorance, or laziness.

Especially irksome if the person speaks in public.

  53. Buffoman June 11, 2011 7:01 am

It would be absolutely terrific if a few, if not not all of the fantastic young men who play football in Hawaii choose first to play for their home team. They all make up their own minds and will choose what they feel are best for them.

Nonetheless, we need to keep and make our team the best and best prepared to represent not only the institution but the State (as it is the only football representative from Hawaii) on the larger playing field. Our coaches will find the best athlete wanting to play and be a quality representative for the team and State.

These young men, those not from Hawaii have become ours. Colt, Larry Cole, Gary Allen and the long list of those who came stand alongside of those local boys who chose to stay at home. Jesse Sapolu, Bryant Moniz, Paipai Falemalu, The Noga brothers. These men are not forgotten.

Maybe in the future more local young men will see the benefit of staying home and representing the 808.

  54. wafan June 11, 2011 7:04 am

    Kamehameha Day!?!?

Have not heard that in ages. Hope everyone celebrates safely! Used to like the parage with all the flowers that left a lot of gardens bolo-head.

  55. bigislandkurt June 11, 2011 7:10 am

In keeping with the tradition of past years, I’m sure a few UH offers will come out of the Big Man camp.

    BIK

#38- gonna learn that dance later this summer for my nephew’s upcoming wedding!

  57. kainaluboy June 11, 2011 8:06 am

There are several local boys playing in Japan. Kevin Jackson (UH), Karl Noa (KS and UH), Frank Fernandez Jr (St. Louis and Harvard), Derek Faave (UH) and Rocky Alo (Kailua HS and BYU)

  58. tommui June 11, 2011 8:29 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    A comment on GARRET’s #42 and WAFAN’s # 48

Interesting how the top recruits at the camp have offers from Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Arizona…but not UH

I would image there is a basis for UH not having made an offer. It would be nice if we knew what was the rationale.

  59. tommui June 11, 2011 8:30 am

Sorry – #58 “imagine” not “image”.

  60. CoolEthan June 11, 2011 8:31 am

    The guv redeem himself ?

He is the rubber stamp of the guy who believes you put money in the economy by taking money out of the economy, then putting back into the economy while taxing it.

    It doesn’t work.

  61. CoolEthan June 11, 2011 8:32 am

    #57 I didn’t know Harvard has a football team.

  63. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 8:37 am

Wasn’t Mufi on the BB team at Harvard?

Hubby says no athletic scholarships are given by Ivy League schools.

    Is this true?

  64. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 8:39 am

ST, somehow I am not surprised you know how to dance the Electric Slide.

You seem good at group dancing.

You even know how to do the Haka!!!

  65. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 8:41 am

The only line dance I know is the Marenge. sp?

  66. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 8:42 am

Liz, you are a natural for the Electric Slide.

Bet you won’t have a problem learning it.

  67. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 8:45 am

    I like ST’s remark —

The Electric Slide is a good reason to have a wedding. lol

  68. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 8:46 am

Correction: ST said it is the BEST reason to have a wedding.

  69. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 8:47 am

just as long as it is not the ONLY reason to have a wedding.

  70. A-House June 11, 2011 8:48 am

    Garret, Wafan & Tom Mui:

Perhpas certain players have already told UH staff they are not interested in Warrior football and will go away to play.

  71. partimelurka June 11, 2011 9:23 am

    mahalos for da response al

  72. whitey June 11, 2011 9:40 am

Col A House, long time no see, but you are probably correct. I think the coaches made a decision in the past that if a kid was not interested in UH, they would not pursue or offer. I not sure what the procedure is for recruiting, but I think prior to any contact with an athlete, he or she must have written to UH asking them for more info about athletics. If that is the case, then verbal is not acceptable.

  73. whitey June 11, 2011 9:44 am

Personally, I like the direction that Coach Mc and his staff is going concerning recruiting. Each year their recruiting class has shown improvement and they recruit kids who want to play for da warriors and not use UH as leverage for their own personal gain.

  74. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2011 9:44 am

I’m fairly certain UH will be offering some of the campers scholarships if they haven’t already.

  75. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2011 9:50 am

But the Pac 12 membership is going to make Colorado and Utah bigger players in local recruiting. They’ll be getting $20 million more in TV money. Meanwhile, an opposing coach told me he’s going to use the guv’s recent statements.

  76. whitey June 11, 2011 9:50 am

It looks impressive for a fb player to say, I have offers from Oregon, Utah, Colorado, etc, but only one school will sign him. The athlete worked hard for those offers, so hopefully he has choices of various schools. For that, I have no problem, but if he wanted to attend UH, he and his family should write to Coach Mc to let him know. To say, UH neva offer him, may not be correct because we don’t know the whole story.

  77. whitey June 11, 2011 9:53 am

ST, personally I don’t give a rat’s arse about the guv cause he double talks.

  78. whitey June 11, 2011 9:55 am

PAC 10 always had more money than UH, so this is nothing new. They can do many things that UH will not be able to afford, but one major thing UH has is heart and people with aloha. Try find that on the mainland schools.

  79. whitey June 11, 2011 9:57 am

Got to go as my spacecraft is ready. Might see sum of you on the dark side. hahahahaaa

  80. whitey June 11, 2011 10:06 am

Almost porgot, but remember the movie “The Replacements” where Gene Hackman is the head coach. I think it was in the locker room where the prima donna player thought he was it, then got canned by Hackman. The coach told his replacemnt qb that “you got to have heart, miles and miles of heart”. Well, that is what UH and the people of Hawaii has and others try to copy, but are not able to because they don’t understand it. We learn it while being created and live it till we die. That’s all folks!!!!

    UH VS UNLV 2011

    Ticket Status Update

Okay, so in 2007, I had no problem getting a group discount from the UNLV ticket office and was able to pick up the tickets prior to single game seats becoming available. (I.e., they had group blocks to distribute.) In 2009, no more group discount, but I flew to Vegas on June 1, the first day of single season ticket sales and got our 240 tix.

This year is starting to annoy me. A month or so ago when I called the ticket office, I was told single game tickets would go on sale the beginning of July. (A month later than in 2009 – perhaps to get as many season ticket sales as possible?) Today, I was told in the middle of July, but to call back in mid-June for a possible “pre-sale” to the Tsaikos. I’ll keep everyone posted.

It is very important that you all let SteveM [know] your ticket intentions since I’m going to base the group size from that list. Currently, it’s around 70 or so. I’m thinking by September we will have 150-200 committed.

Ticket requests received to date are posted at:

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/las2011.html

Requests are still considered tentative but Rich2176 might ask for confirmation soon. Please update ticket, RSVP, and other info via email: stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com

  85. Derek June 11, 2011 10:41 am

The fact is that UH can’t offer scholarships to every local Division I player and a lot of them end up going to the mainland. That is okay. We get some, we lose some. Some real good ones got away such as Manti Teo (he never considered UH anyway) and Hauoli Jamora has been very good as a freshman at Washington. For my money, I think UH’s last 2 recruiting classes got the best local players in Beau Yap (redshirt freshman) and Justin Vele (true freshman). I think these 2 guys will make a very big impact on the program and will be leaders in the years to come. And the best local player that has gone on to a great NFL career is Jesse Sapolu, a UH recruit by Dick Tomey. Falaniko and Al Noga were great too.

Funny, they are all from Farrington!!!!!

So, to all those guys that decided to go to the mainland: Mariota, Kaai, Asiata, and that St. Louis DE that decided to go to Colorado who I can’t remember his name already. Good luck.

Out of sight, out of mind. We, UH fans, root for players who play for our Warriors. That’s what we do and that’s what we are interested in. Local, from the mainland, or from some other country. If they decide to be Warriors, we welcome them and treat them like our own and like our ohana. That’s the way it is. Coach Mack and staff has done a very good job of finding talent from all over, from high schools and the JC ranks. The found Alex Green from Butte College. The found Sterling Jackson and Darryl McBride from Mendocino College. Places from Australia, Samoa, etc. We look from somebody who tries to have a connection to Hawaii, like Iosefa, Hary-Tuliau if possible. We look for speed and athleticism in the receivers and secondary positons, toughness in LBs and in the trenches, etc. Like Mack says, they look for cornerbacks who can play safety, safeties who can play linebackers, linebackers who can play DEs and DEs who can play inside. Speed, speed, speed. Speed kills. At QB, Rolovich looks to find the “holy grail” to help us take us to the promised land, ala Colt Brennan.

whitey — that was where the players did the Electric Slide too… in the jail scene with “I Will Survive” music.

    I feel sorry for hubby.

His foot is giving him acute pain when he walks.

He has an appt with a podiatrist on Thursday and expects surgery.

Tonight, he will be wearing jogging shoes instead of dress shoes to protect his foot while dancing.

  90. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2011 11:17 am

One of the things I was impressed with about the Big Man’s Camp is how football is such a community.

A guy decides to go Colorado, but yet he recommends that his cousin attend a UH camp. And then afterward, the UH coaches are jokingly telling the Colorado guy about how he’s going to feel when he steps off the plane in Hawaii in September.

Then there’s Vili Fehoko. Three of his sons played the drums at UH events, but ended up going to schools on the Mainland. Yet yesterday, Fehoko’s youngest son is at the UH camp. No hard feelings. It’s all about football.

It seems that fans often are angrier about a player going away than the coaches and other players.

Just look at this blog. The sons of D1 and Bulla play for Mainland schools, but yet D1 and Bulla and their families attend UH games regularly and are some of the biggest supporters of the Warriors.

Football is the common bond for many of us. It’s the reason this blog exists. Well, that and food.

  91. d1shima (Aria'd) June 11, 2011 11:17 am

    Gigi,

Your computer get issues, eh? Can only watch 30-45 seconds of a utube video?

  92. d1shima (Aria'd) June 11, 2011 11:23 am

Can’t speak for The Beast (although I’m sure it’s the case for him, too) but #2 son is, and always will be a Warrior fan.

….that said, should Hawaii ever start scheduling games against Linfield again all bets would be off! 👿

  93. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 11:24 am

ST, I don’t have sons, but have a grandson who seems very athletic. I’d like to see him be an athlete at Harvard. lol

  94. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 11:25 am

d1, is it my computer or youTube???

  95. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 11:27 am

d1, I think it will be DANGEROUS for you to sit among Hawaii fans and cheer for the opposing team…

  96. d1shima (Aria'd) June 11, 2011 11:28 am

Never heard anyone else say they could only watch 30 seconds of utoob

  97. Jason June 11, 2011 11:28 am

d1: I think that constitutes an invite from gigi to watch at her house. 😉

  98. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 11:29 am

    d1, Linfield?

    Why is that name familiar?

Were Hugh Yoshida and vonAppen students there?

  99. d1shima (Aria'd) June 11, 2011 11:29 am

I would sit next to a former UHAD

  100. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 11:30 am

Jason, we don’t know what Oceanic has in store for us.

Will everybody with cable have access to the games or will we have to pay for PPV again?

  101. d1shima (Aria'd) June 11, 2011 11:31 am

Many in the local coaching community went thru McMinnville.

  102. Derek June 11, 2011 11:39 am

If a local recruit wants to freeze his glutials in Boulder, Colorado, Provo or Salt Lake City, Utah or play in cold rain in Seattle, Eugene or Corvallis, Oregon be my guest. To each his own. Me, I’d rather play in warm, sunny Honolulu in front of my family, friends, and with a crowd cheering for me. But, as Rap Replinger would say on his Auntie Marialani cooking show, “Go, check em, go check em.!” UH has nothing to be ashamed of and are playing a very good football schedule. Against the likes of UW, the Tatonkas, the Trojans, the Cougars, the Broncos, Aztecs, Falcons, etc. etc. etc. The UH coaches can say to the recruits that we are playing a big time schedule with an exciting offense and a Hawaii passion for defense and special teams.

  103. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 11:43 am

I am already married so don’t be put off by what I am going to say —

But, judging from what I have seen, read, and heard, I believe male Tsaikos make good husbands.

No one is an alcoholic, compulsive gambler, adulterer, murderer, thief or woman beater, right?

    Right!

Women should join the WB to find a suitable husband.

    Amen!

  104. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 11:44 am

With that said, I am gone for an hour…

  105. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 11, 2011 12:11 pm

    ST …or anyone,

I do some youtube searches and can find some “official” videos of Penn State, Alabama, Boise St., TCU, Utah, etc of team practices…Not very long but several that are like 5-10mins long.

Seems to be part of the marketing/media program…I’m guessing the silly theory is the more you see a team or giving fans a “backstage” look into the program to hype it up.

I know UH has video cameras, I know UH can operate video cameras, I know UH can edit video cameras, and I know UH can access and use YouTube….What I don’t know is why UH hasn’t used these abilities on things like the Warrior Bowl and some practices to post online.

  106. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 11, 2011 12:12 pm

    #103,

Not that any tsaikos are real psychos or murderers etc…But public vs. private face. Never can tell. lol.

  107. al June 11, 2011 12:13 pm

89…oh he’s going for the peewee herman look.

  108. Chris Hilo June 11, 2011 1:08 pm

At today’s PIAA Big Island Combine, Drew Kell ran a 4.56 – a day after intense lifting and running thirty 40-yard sprints for conditioning yesterday at practice. A couple Kamehameha-Hawaii kids including Keoni Wong and Aukai Akau (state long-jump champion) ran very fast times as well; the combine results should be online in a day or two. Good job for everyone who showed up today.

  109. Randy F June 11, 2011 1:19 pm

    ST:

Since you went to the camp yesterday, which former UH players are helping at the Big man’s camp this weekend? Just curious.

  110. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2011 1:36 pm

Matt Faga, Rocky Savaiigaea were the ones I talked to

  111. al June 11, 2011 1:37 pm

    triple one

  112. al June 11, 2011 2:31 pm

in a real effort to not only teach techniques at the big man camps…there should be as many prospects…er, attendees that is… as there are alumni instructors.

in particular, guys like manuwai, sopoaga, laboy, alama-francis, sapolu, and the like should give back small kine for the university. and oh what stories they could tell for their captive audience.

an intro high light reel of the university featuring the past all americans, nfl’ers, all wac’ers, and the successful in the business community (pride. for one) all of whom would be instructors at the big man camps.

if done right, sponsorships for air and accomodations for the alumni would be nice followed by an annual alumni bash.

it’s time to think out of the box. break the rice bowls.

    …nuff said.

  113. Darren June 11, 2011 2:35 pm

    105. IWWTHM – UH posts their videos at their football website home page. Warrior Bowl, Hilo trip, interviews, etc. Always worth checking out the latest.

  114. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 11, 2011 2:48 pm

    #113,

Those are the ones already on youtube through their hawaiiathletics channel that I have scene and was referring to.

The Warrior Bowl highlights don’t show much of anything…They could go further in depth and make it 15-20 minutes long. Maybe interview Tomey, Aranda, Rolovich to see how they think things are going. etc etc etc.

Go google Alabama or Penn State Practice on youtube to get an idea of what Hawaii could be doing.

Nothing wrong with flooding youtube and getting google hits with the term Hawaii and football or something. More is more in this case.

That is why I say we forget spending $4,000 or whatever on the Moniz for Heisman case and push harder on marketing the entire program.

  115. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 11, 2011 2:49 pm

    ST,

So do you know of any reason why UH isn’t comprehensive in their media relations program as some other schools? Lack of staff? Money (im sure)?

When it comes to video editing, I know for a fact that you can hire part time college students at $8.00 to do that kind of editing. Apple software has made it so easy even an UNtrained monkey could do it.

  116. Kapahulu June 11, 2011 3:28 pm

    #112

Al, I like your ideas and I would take it a step further. How about getting all Warrior Football Alumni that make it to the NFL each donate a one time amount of $10,000.00 towards a Warriors In The NFL Wall of Honor in the UH Football Locker Room. I’m sure the players could afford it and they can write it off on their taxes as a donation. This would help current players feel surrounded by the former players and perhaps motivate them to give their best efforts. This would also help in recruiting when potential recruits get to see a plaque or picture of someone like a Jesse Sapolu or a Jason Elam with all their NFL Championship rings. Some may not even have been aware that those players were from the UH Football Program. It would show that if they came to UH to play football, they too could end up in the NFL.

Whatever monies leftover from the wall could help to upkeep the Football Locker Room.

Just think, 10 players at $10,000.00 each would amount to $100,000.00. After awhile each player at UH would know that if they too made it to the NFL, they would be encouraged to donate to the UH Warriors in The NFL Wall of Honor.

  117. al June 11, 2011 3:47 pm

    116…thumbs up…both of them!

  118. A-joe June 11, 2011 4:14 pm

    #116-

To take it a step even further: rather than pouring the Warrior’s donated funds directly into building a one time deal project, pool all their money into a trust fund instead. The residual interest accrued can be used annually to fund so much more.

An account can easily be set up through the University of Hawaii Foundation.

Best of all, accounts totaling over $20,000 become totally self sufficient.

What better way to perpetuate a former Warrior’s donation than to have it go towards a gift that keeps on giving forever.

But here’s the thing: we assume that due to their sudden windfall of higher wages an athlete will have no problem in cutting a 10G check. That would be true, if, that was their only fiscal responsibility. A better way of generating annual funds is to establish a strong UH football players Alumni. Then, create annual dinners, golf tournaments, speaking engagements that allow former players to meet and greet paying/donating fans and sell signed memorabilia. These engagements can be done here in the islands and on the mainland. All proceeds would go the trust fund.

Most former athletes find it easier and are more willing to donate their time to the school.

  119. Slugger June 11, 2011 4:18 pm

    Hi y’all….

#116 ~ idea should be passed on to Alvin Katahara who is now the Alumni program director within the UH Foundation office. Did both Elam & Sapolu complete their degree programs at UH?

  120. Slugger June 11, 2011 4:20 pm

    Hi, A-Joe,

Bought beef today at the Farmer’s Market from Kuahiwi Ranch, Ka’u.

Exactly ST, I remember taking my son to an Iolani Basketball camp. This was during the time Kalaheo and Iolani were always battling for number one. Half of the high school kids helping with at the Iolani clinic were from Kalaheo HS. That’s when it really dawned on me that much of the animosity was with the parents and fans.

  122. Old Diver June 11, 2011 4:38 pm

    Just saw this,

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation is reporting that one, or more, of the atomic reactors at Fukushima Daiichi which have suffered core meltdowns have actually experienced something even worse — melt-through of multiple layers of steel (reactor pressure vessel and primary containment structure), so that molten nuclear fuel is now onto the “dry earth floor” beneath. ABC quotes senior adviser to the Japanese government Goshi Hosono (in translation): “At present there is damage to the bottom of the reactor container, we call this ‘core melting’ in English.

If true this is what is known as the “China Syndrome”.

  123. warriorsun June 11, 2011 4:57 pm

up and until coach aranda arrived on the lower end of the manoa campus, uh football communications and cyber-equipment was virtually neolithic….with one exception. one coach introduced uh to computers, software, power points, texting and threw away the postage stamps, fancy letterheads, form letters and chalk boards. he once told me kids today can grasp things quickly in 7 sec bites of info. they are trained from childhood–on their own.

even now, those devices are several generations removed from the latest array of cyber-space equipment and software. athletes today, are on the cutting edge and programs literally must stay on top to remain competitive. true, that any techie can download film and edit but untrue that a monkey on wheels can do it and with the trained skill of a knowledgeable coach. this is not photo shop. u r talking about understanding formations, field situations, personnel changes, asset packages, redzone formations, special team formations, play, field and player tendencies, infinitum stuff. the last time i checked, a monkey or cave man for that matter, has never prepared a game plan in two days. yes, techies have advanced game prep, but monkeys still chew on peanuts and scratch their a$$es, especially when given less than 48 hours to break-down game film and devise game plans.

  124. A-joe June 11, 2011 5:18 pm

Slugger- That ranch is run by the Galimba ‘Ohana. That’s family to former UH Lineman and ’80 Waialua grad, Rashad Galimba.

    Small world, yeah? =)

  125. Slugger June 11, 2011 5:27 pm

    A-Joe,

Michelle was there selling beef. They’re at the KCC Farmer’s Market once a month. Be back in mid-July.

    Nice to support local farmers.

  126. A-joe June 11, 2011 5:28 pm

  129. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 11, 2011 5:35 pm

Schools like USC have this Trojan Day for VIP’s or something….They bring in the USC all stars currently in the NFL or Hall of Famers and fans pay like $10,000-$15,000 each to be a part of this very intimate event.

Its run by a private group that takes a cut of the proceeds with the rest going to the USC football program.

I am trying to remember this from memory as one of my friends who is a USC alumni paid like $10,000 to go to it. He said they have this “football clinic” where you can put on pads and play with the pros and hall of famers. Then there is some kind of dinner reception at the end and you get a bunch of memorabilia.

I know we are not USC and have super high profile players in the NFL or HOF a mile long but still something worth looking into.

  130. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 5:53 pm

A-Joe, no it was APPT not APP.

    LOL

    glad you figured it out.

  131. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 5:55 pm

A-Joe, surprised you and A-sports have been together for so long.

Good that you took ballroom dance classes together during the 1990s.

Did you ever dance at the Palladium?

  132. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 11, 2011 5:58 pm

Speaking of farmer’s market – the initial “soft opening” of the Kaka`alo Makai Market turned out to be a lot of fun.

For a variety of reasons, we didn’t sell anything today, but we still took in over $100 in donations for the Plant A Native Tree Campaign and gave away t-shirts and native plants.

The KMMP will be back next weekend on Friday afternoon from 4:30 pm to 8 pm and all day Saturday. If you want to support local farmers, artisans, “green” businesses & non-profits, eat great grindz, and listen to fantastic entertainment, then drop on by. We’re planning to take part in two weeks – hopefully, we’ll be selling our malasadas by then.

Our immediate goal – besides raising funds to plant 1.4 million native trees across the state by December 31, 2014 – is to bring me technologically into the second decade of the 21st century both in terms of training as well as equipment.

FOOTBALL QUESTION: Who on the 2011 Warrior football team came here on June Jones’ watch?

  133. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 6:00 pm

Slugger, I have never been to the Farmers Market at KCC.

But my sister Sylvia sells vegan food there once a month.

She owns a store called LICIOUS DISHES.

We buy her food once a week there.

But I really SHOULD visit the Farmers Mkt sometime.

I heard a lot of good things about it.

  134. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 6:02 pm

All I need is a cup of tea or two or ten since eating during the day usually zonks me out.

  138. A-joe June 11, 2011 6:56 pm

    129: IWWTHM

    It’s called Flashback Camps.

    http://www.flashbackcamps.com/usc/

Back in ’01 we had an idea to come up with a tour that fans could take of UH athletic facilities and meet with former players. Proceeds would go to benefit the UH equipments department. We expanded on the idea of possibly creating a fantasy camp where camp goers could try on and wear uniforms and actually participate in light drills and practice. Al Ginoza said no because he feared the liability would be too high.

’06 I worked with former USC and Denver Bronco player, Rod Sherman (creator of Flashback Camps) to see if we could bring his program to Hawaii. At the time he had Pete Carroll running a camp, then UW coach Willingham had one, Tennessee coach Fullmer had one and Florida coach Meyer had one. JJ liked the concept but wanted total control. So it never took off.

Still could do it with coach Mac. But Rod liked JJ because he felt he could sell the camp idea to others beyond just UH fans to attend. Non UH fans could come and see how the Run n Shoot really works.

Although we were the youngest couple there by 27 years I gotta say, everyone in the class were excellent seasoned dancers! They could all jitterbug and west coast swing the night away!! Incredible!!

    Mouse would be good, yeah?

    Go Warriors!!!

  144. wafan June 11, 2011 7:56 pm

Tried to watch the Kamehameha Day parade on line. I was really looking foward to seeing the flowers and hearing some good bands. All I got was a black screen.

    So much for that idea.

  145. wafan June 11, 2011 7:57 pm

Cannot park at Ala Moana Center cause they chain it after a certain hour.

Don’t want to be trapped there.

    Uhhh….wafan.

    Time for bed? 😆

  154. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 8:07 pm

so we go to OCEANS CLUB at Restaurant Row.

    Get there at 7:25 pm.

Security guard tells us there is a graduation party inside.

    Dancing opens at 10 pm.

    Cannot wait 2.5 hrs!!!

He at least validates our parking ticket.

  155. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 8:08 pm

We then try BONSAI near Oceans.

Bartender tells us Dancing begins at 9 pm.

    Crap.

  156. gigi-hawaii June 11, 2011 8:09 pm

    so no Palladium tonight.

    Some good came from it.

Too bad it didn’t work out for you tonight. Somehow, I have a feeling it was a blessing in disguise. Those venues you mentioned probably cater to the younger set. The Palladium and the Warrior Lounge has a more mature clientele and is probably more suitable to what you’re looking for. Regardless, happy anniversary. Hubby needed the rest anyway.

  167. SteveM June 11, 2011 11:42 pm

gigi — sorry you and hubby didn’t make it to the dance floor.

Maybe you can try the Warrior Lounge… esp. if Curt & Meg goes too. How about we make a dinner/dance/karaoke Call one Saturday?

Dinner at the restaurant right next door first. Good food.

Found this 26 second clip of some karaoke and dancing at the Hale Koa Warrior Lounge. Too dark to see much detail but you can gauge the width of the room (smallish). The karaoke is provided by a one-person “karaoke service provider”, similar to my 3-person Karaoke Madness friends. As such, the songs are usually in singable keys…

  170. al June 12, 2011 12:49 am

is this open to the general public?

  171. SteveM June 12, 2011 1:02 am

Al — As Curt mentioned last night, the lounge is open to the public. But it is a smaller venue. I estimate under 80 people max. seated, but it’s been a while and there was remodeling. Relatively large dance floor for it’s size though.

The Koko Cafe requires someone with a military ID card in the group. Not a problem.

#123, (for some reason its still under awaiting moderation)

What are you talking about? I am not talking about putting up game film that the coaches use to coach/develop plays/prep for games etc etc… What i-d*i-o*t would post that online for the world to see?!?!

If you would youtube and search for the videos I was referring to you would have an idea of what kind of videos I am talking about. Oh might as well just link it for you so you know what I am talking about.

It’s simply videos of practice or a “behind the scenes” look at our football program, interview with coaches, players, vids of facilities, etc.

  199. sennheiser headphones June 13, 2011 6:15 pm

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
