J-E-T-T, Jett! Jett! Jett!

Whether he plays a down or not this season, wideout Jett Jasper is viewed as an important member of the Warriors. A UH coach said there was never any doubt that Jasper would be included in the 105-player roster for training camp. Jasper is praised widely as being a “good teammate.”

Jasper’s diligence extends beyond football. He is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee that helps newcomers and serves as a liaison to the administration. The SAAC helped install bicycle air stations, cleaned Manoa pond, and started a read-to-me program at elementary schools.  The SAAC recently installed permanent umbrellas stands outside the weight room.

Jasper was a volunteer host during the Warriors’ Junior Day the past semester.

Jasper earned a bachelor’s degree the past December, and he is taking classes toward a master’s degree. One other thing: As a walk-on, he pays the student-activity fee.

* * * * *

It’s sad to hear about former Warrior receiver and coach Craig Stutzmann’s situation. Stutz is a good guy, and a good coach, and I’m sure he’ll bounce back.

Here’s one take: Stutzmann.

Although the charge is serious, the “resignation” is surprising because there’s supposed to be a presumption of innocence until a verdict is reached, and any action probably could have waited until after next month’s court hearing.

he knew what he got into taking the job. if he is in fact guilty, then this is part of the penalty he will ultimately pay.

thankfully he wasn’t injured and more importantly he did not injure anyone.

Dang. One mistake? I sure hope the coach and ad are as pure and guiltless as they must believe themselves to be.

    Something about rocks and glass.

Positive thoughts for the Stutz family.

  11. mctruck June 26, 2011 4:17 am

Never read or heard of Stutz ever having that kind of problem in Hawaii? Maybe he just didn’t want this whole thing to drag on; hope everything gets cleared in court.

    JETT> JETT> JETT.

  12. mctruck June 26, 2011 4:33 am

Strange, and understandable…..just reflecting on a certain bb coach from Oklahoma St. who is no longer employed by that university….that former hc was continually in the news about his dui problem(s) and never got fired until the university decided that the situation(s) were too much to bare. Different part of the country, indeed.

Not condoning drinking and driving by any means…just sayin, “zero tolerence” is good, but just wait till the hammer drops.

  13. Lopaka June 26, 2011 4:44 am

stutz was one of my best friends at uh. he’s a really good guy. we all make mistakes. i think the resignation has more to do with circumstances surrounding his head coach which sucks. i kind of wish they didn’t let this news get out. i tried to get him here at smu with us but we don’t have an opening right now. he’ll land on his feet again. hopefully, he’ll be with us in the very near future.

  18. d1shima June 26, 2011 6:22 am

Stutzmann took the high road in an unfortunate situation.

Craig will be fine; he is a good, young coach.

Good because as a young coach he is always open to learning. He will learn from this and move on; we might consider doing the same.

“Keep moving folks. Nothing to see here.”

  19. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2011 6:36 am

I dined at Jett Jasper’s folks’ restaurant in Lihue, Kauai, in 2008. Loved their slavonic steak! Just thinking about it makes me salivate.

See Jett’s restaurant (JJ’S BROILER) here:

re: Stutz — A similar situation happened to a coach/friend of mine who coached at a MWC school. Once it happened, he had two choices — 1) resign or 2) get fired. Well, he chose option #2 and “was not retained” by the head coach. A DUI is a DUI, hard to dispute the numbers if he had to blow. Basically, the burden of proof is on Stutz to prove that he was not drunk or the officer pulled him over for the wrong reasons. Hard to beat a DUI.

    BIK

  21. Kekoa June 26, 2011 6:54 am

Hmmm…another case of an assistant coach that has experienced a rush to judgement. The recent case of a former UH Warrior involved in an alleged incident at Kapolei HS comes to mind. Word on the ceded lands is that the young woman involved admitted that she made up the story. Auwe!…the damage is done.

  22. bigislandkurt June 26, 2011 7:07 am

    Good morning Kekoa!

In the case of DUI, it is almost always “guilty until proven innocent.” If a Breathalyzer was involved, that’s gonna be hard to dispute.

sometimes these misfortunes come early in a career for a purpose and can be used to make a coach better. stuzz loves football and left hawaii to pursue his dream. Im hoping craig will continue his coaching pursuits and rebound strongly. he is good at it. turn-it-around stuzz, you are made of strong stuff.

Jett Jasper is what is known as the true student-athlete. He’ll be a success in life. Bank it.

I’ve been to JJ Broiler on many occasions for lunch. Good food and great ambiance overlooking Nawiliwili Bay/Harbor. Great sandwiches.

the kolten wong bonus storyline is great recruiting fodder for coach mike. u can bet your next payola coach trap will have a gold-engraved surrejoiner for his draft-ige prepsters he wants to recruit. especially for those in the five-figure neighborhood.

by waiting for three years after high school, kolt, increased his bonus 17X.

not saying every situation will be the same, and to be sure, every kid has a different set of circumstances. but still, it gives pause to a youngster, to think before leaping at the first offer of $$. incredibly, kolt made the decision to play in college. his dad was leaning otherwise, but left it up to his son…..for a seventeen year old–kolt’s decision was all $$$.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JETT!!!

  38. SteveM June 26, 2011 10:00 am

    JJ’s Broiler in Nawiliwili…

Great place to watch to UH PPV football and the staff was proud of Jett when I went there in early September 2007 to watch the season opener. My sister and family were visiting from Seattle and on the Pride of Hawaii (now Norwegian Jade) and I had to accompany mom. Fortunately, the ship was over-nighting in Nawiliwili Saturdays so Stretch suggested I go the JJ’s Broiler, practically next door. Peaches. with no vacation, stayed home and watched the game at club gigi. 🙂 (I didn’t know Genji’s had PPV).

At JJ’s, I was warmly greeted when I said I came to watch the UH game and they gave me a player ID chart…noting Jett’s number. Being alone, I was seated at the bar opposite the largest flat screen in the place–and there were many sets in there. Coincidentally, the ship director who handles frequent cruisers was sitting next me. He was UH fan too–very educational talking with him for 3 hours. 😉

I wore my Tsai-ko caricature shirt. A waitress asked me about it. I got a polite, blank look when I explained. Hmmm…then I noticed the only newspapers on the counter was brand X. When the game started, ALL the TVs were switched to the UH game. There were protests from some tables who were watching something else. The wait staff were all busy elsewhere. Someone protested the game was too loud. Must be break time.

JJ’s Broiler is a great place to watch UH football.

  39. Shoko June 26, 2011 10:01 am

Probably better to resign rather than be suspended by the university. I recall Idaho State assistant coach, Junior Falevai, that got busted for a DUI and was suspended before his court date and eventually fired. Apparently, ISU has a zero-tolerance policy for DUI’s, especially if it involves one of their coaches.

Everything happens for a reason – in physics, for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction – some same it is fate ( not Faith Yanagi ), for others it’s ————-.

Whatever it may be, Craig will be a better person and coach – perhaps, it is in his cards that this will bring him back home to eventually join the Warrior staff.

As Doris Day sang, “Que Sera Sera, whatever will be will be, the future’s not ours to see —”

and, a belated Happy Birfday to all I missed and to Jett Jasper!!!

  48. Martin June 26, 2011 12:01 pm

    Regarding stutz:

IF (and I understand that it is still an IF) he is guilty of a DUI, this is something that is simply not excusable! Yes, I hope he learns from this, and yes, I hope he can turn this into a positive. But if he had hurt an innocent person (imagine if it was your loved one or relative) would you all label his error as a “misfortune” or “life lesson” or “one mistake?”

I could care less how much of a “good guy” he is.

So says the friends of Ryan Dunn.

  49. Stephen Tsai June 26, 2011 12:08 pm

    Martin:

Point taken. If he is found guilty, it is inexcusable. But I would prefer to wait for a verdict before passing judgment.

  50. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2011 12:13 pm

    SteveM,

btw, is Genji going to show the away games for the Tsaikos?

  52. Old Diver June 26, 2011 12:33 pm

It appears Craig Stutzmann’s trial if it comes to that will take place during the football season. This was a tough position that Stutzmann put the head coach in, and without a long resume releasing him became the easy thing to do.

  53. Stephen Tsai June 26, 2011 12:41 pm

    The hearing is July 25.

  54. Old Diver June 26, 2011 1:01 pm

I believe at that hearing the court will decide if there is enough evidence to go to trial, if so then they may set a trial date at that time.

  55. papajoe2 June 26, 2011 1:36 pm

Article in SA section G, page g3 about Maxim Knight from Mililani. He’s acting in Falling Skys. His father was a classmate of mine since intermediate through high school and hung out with our “gang” before going into the Air Force, although he is much, much older than I am(jk). Check it out. When you see Maxim, just realize that he is exactly 1/2 Filipino. Just wanted a shout out for a friend’s son. Good show too.

  56. d1shima (Aria'd) June 26, 2011 2:12 pm

The article in the Idaho paper says he already pled innocent. Wouldn’t you enter a plea after formal charges?

  57. Iwonderwhytheyhateme June 26, 2011 2:17 pm

It’s unfortunate that former Warriors over the past month have been in the media for less than desirable reasons.

So what is this “rumor” about Forcier deciding on SJSU?

ST, have you received any texts from him recently?

Nothing about SJSU on his facebook/twitter/website.

  58. d1shima (Aria'd) June 26, 2011 2:26 pm

Saw the end of the UM-Illinois game from last season last night. Gotta admit Forcier is a better than average talent on the field.

  59. Iwonderwhytheyhateme June 26, 2011 2:34 pm

    #58,

Yeah I believe so too. The parts still gotta fit in with our entire system and program.

If he does in fact pick SJSU, it’s going to be because he will be able to start right away.

  60. Lopaka June 26, 2011 4:37 pm

    Martin,

I’m supporting my friend in a difficult situation. He got charged with a DUI and lost his job for it. If he’s found guilty, he’ll pay for it in whatever way they see fit. But he is a good guy and no one was hurt in the incident except for his family and his reputation. I know we have to live by a higher standard when in this profession but it is hard when a young man’s mistakes is made public for everyone to see. I think a little compassion is warranted in this situation.

  61. Da Punchbowl Kid June 26, 2011 5:06 pm

Correct, Stutzmann pleaded innocent after he was formally charged. The next hearing will be to determine if there is enough evidence to go to trial. If so the Judge may set a trial date at that time. I am hoping Stutzmann is innocent and this case never goes to trial.

  66. warriorsun June 26, 2011 5:30 pm

it is well known that alcohol related deaths recorded annually on us highways is nearly three times the number of us military fatalities suffered in each year of the vietnam war.

it is a huge problem and a sobering reality.

should we pass the katana to craig to self-inflict a mortal wound?

    what about his family?

    punish them too?

at this point we are talking reconstruction through process and humility, not destruction through resignation and shame.

stuzz resigned. he is taking the first step in the process to account and acknowledge.

there is a process he will go through and most on this blog wish him well to succeed, so he can be productive in life, reconstruct, and continue supporting his family. to say anyone condones the nature of his charge is simply irrational. i cant speak for others, but craig was making a contribution to society through coaching. i wish he continues. but one responsible step at a time. i want to encourage and support stuzz in each and every step he makes to regain his calling as a college coach.

  70. Old Diver June 26, 2011 10:03 pm

My son and wife are watching WWE Smackdown from Friday night and the USO brothers just did the Haka. The announcers mentioned that the University of Hawaii football team does it before each game. The Warriors have finally made the big time.

  71. hypocrisy June 26, 2011 10:38 pm

Have been to JJ’s on the Garden Island. The food is good and the entire staff is super. Jett has the support of the entire island of Kauai and the entire wait staff were just so very proud of the fact that he was on the great UH football team. Great to see a local boy do well and you must meet Jett and talk with him to know that he is headed for much greatness. The boy is very humble and I guess he really does take after his Father, Richard, Mother, Therese. Jett also has a beautiful younger sister, Jori that is in attendence at UH also. All in all, a super UH family! Enjoyed the short time the wife and I spent on Kauai and also the super meals at JJ’s with such a SUPER Hawaiian family! Waiting for another vacation to pardise.

Jett and family are super folks… And super UHA supporters. Their restaurant airs all the games and even has a place to buy supporter shirts and other fan gear.

Blessings and wisdom for Coach Stutz. From a great crisis can emerge a great victory.

    Hiho!

  78. Old School Dave June 27, 2011 10:13 am

Sorry to hear about the turn of events for Craig Stutzmann. I’m sure he’ll land back on his feet somewhere. Idaho State hired their HC and put him on a tight leash after some “questionable” events that occurred when he was at Montana State and cost him his job.

Back in the “old days” school teachers or coaches couldn’t even be seen in public with a cigarette in their mouths, or heaven forbid, having a beer after hours in a restaurant or bar. The school administration, parents, and community standards were different back then. Kinda like BYU’s Honor Code today.

You can also purchase an international holiday insurance policy on internet by using your own credit card.
