It’s Ieru’s turn
Oft-injured Raphael Ieru will get the first shot at playing right guard.
Although he is bracketed with Brysen “Bulla” Ginlack on the depth chart, Ieru will get the first-team reps in Monday’s first practice.
It’s been a steep ascent for Ieru, who always seemed to have problems related to a knee injury he suffered as a freshman. Now he is relatively healthy.
* * *
The Warriors won’t do any heavy hitting until their third practice — Saturday, April 4.
* * *
The football team could use some material to rebuild the platform on the portable tower used to shoot video of practices.

Happy birthday to the wonderful and lovely Liz Kauai. She’s been the rock of our blog during an often rocky year. I’m forever grateful for her kindness and hard work (and also for running our cool alternate site).
* * *
Belated congrats to Brie (center) for being named to the ILH padding all-star team.
Whoo-hoo! 1st in nearly forever!!!
And a wet and cool morning to everyone.
Knee injuries are difficult to get over. Never quite the same. I sure hope Ieru is healthy enough to get significant playing time this year!
Happy 39th Birthday Liz!
I cannot believe no one else is up this morning.
HELLO!!! Time to get up!!! Come out and plaaaaaayyyy!!!
Have not seen bhf2 in a bit. Must be busy or did he choke his chicken? Soup anyone?
Bwah-ha-ha-ha!
Dang. How do people set records on here? I am running out of things to say.
GO WARRIORS!
Hi wafan! Thanks for the greetings.
Nitey nite!
For a couple of hours at least…
“The football team could use some material to rebuild the platform on the portable tower used to shoot video of practices.”
Sounds like a Tsai-ko ninja construction project for sure… !
Jason . . .
It would be a difficult choice. If that is what it could be called. The younger could keep going for a long time and has stamina. The elder has more experience and could or has already taught the younger a few things and the timing and use of those techniques.
What the heck! Go for it, you only live once!!!
Besides, really, how long could it go on before you pass out or they tire?
It would be wonderful if the Tsai-ko menehune could do it late one night.
Is there such a thing as a Tsai-ko menehune or it mutually exclusive?
Morning Tsai-kos!
Morning Wafan, Liz!
Geez. Liz are you a night owl or a cockroach? 4:30 in the morning? Dang! Must be a night owl since the sun is not yet up.
I will probably get in trouble for this . . .
Hmmmmm, is it true one needs less sleep the older one gets?
Hi duffer!
How is Maui this morning? I was looking forward to getting the ferry over this summer. So much for that idea.
Morning
Hey Wafan,
Nice and breezy!
The kid is going to Kauai this am to play a couple of practice rounds at Kauai Lagoons.
duffer- I fell asleep in the middle of my blog update. I woke up when my rockstar son finally came home and tippytoed into his room after several days away with his band… then finished the blog and caught up on correspondence.
Now I need to SLEEP some more before our big day today!
😉
duffer- ah- you should come along and come on down to Poipu Beach for Lilu’s party!
noon to 4
or catch Second Nature at Kukui Grove around midday.
zzzz
whoosh!
A fully healthy Raphael Ieru would be a nice boost for the OL this season. I hope that his knee problems are behind him and that he can have a season where he’s not hampered with injury!
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a player having to withdraw from school because of flu…I feel badly for this former Kahuku player.
So Billy Gillespie, Kentuckys’ bb coach fired just after two years..even with a winning record? tough to be a coach with storied program, eh?
Garret . . .
Why is a Bronco’s coach quoted in the Hafoka article synopsis?

Here’s hoping, fingers crossed that Ieru’s knee holds out. It’s too bad there are so many knee/leg injuries which plague fb players. Makes me wish/wonder, what if the knees were located a bit higher, say around the shoulders??…….just wondering.
Some women are simply blessed and born to be lifetime babes! What a beautiful curse to have.
Happy “Forever Babe”, Liz!
ST- they need wat- couple 4’x8′ sheets HDO?

Off to take the family to the zoo, but this article just popped up:
Good morning Tsaikos. see you all later. got game this am for the club championship.
Happy Birthday Liz!
wafan,
Bronco is the first name of BYU’s head coach.
🙂 HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIZ!!! 🙂
………..God bless you!
Garret . . .
Duh. Talk about mis-reading! I transposed the two words, “Bronco” and “coach”.
Bess shows he still has his head screwed on right. I think he will turn out to be one of the best that UH has put in the NFL.
After thinking about it for awhile, you can see why Colt and Davone worked so well together, as they say great minds think alike.
ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,
Spring practice is the starting engine for next season. I wish the schedule was out. I wish the BB coach situation was settled. I wish we have a better offensive line this season. I wish Liz a happy birthday!
Good morning to all!!
Happy Birthday…LizK and hoping for a nice day to celebrate Lilu’s B-Day!

Wishing that all your wishes come true!

Good luck to R. Ieru this spring.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIZKAUAI! Sounds like a day of at least 4 outta 5 F’s for you. It also sounds like some logistical juggling if you going watch Ukuboi at Kukui Grove. Good luck to them; I hope they can continue their musical endeavor.

Happy Birthday Liz and Happy Saturday all.
Don’t forget to turn out the lights for Earth Hour at 8:30pm tonight.
Looks like the softball team jumped the gun one day early according to Stephen twitter tweet.
I had the honor three years ago to meet and have lunch with BYU Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall and told him I thought he had a pretty cool first name. He then told me, “no I don’t, my three sons all have cool names; Breaker, Cutter and Rader.” Coach Medenhall grew around “cutting horses” and has a deep affinity for them.
Young Mr. Hafoka is one of the nicest guys you’d ever want to meet. A real quailty individual, as is his dad. I had the pleasure of flying over to Tonga with them for the old Kingdom Bowl a few years back and got to talk to them a little. Spencer was the MVP of the game and the elder Mr. Hafoka played a big role in fundraising and behind the scenes work that allowed the young men to play the game. Here’s wishing Spencer a speedy recovery!
Happy Birthday, Liz!!
March bebez ROCK!!
Good morning Tsai-ko’s!
*slightly hanging this morning*
Where ST at? Wow….laulau….howz him? A no show last night…WHAT.EVER.
Hello to you all. Good to be back home. We had a grand time. We did a lot for the six days we were there. It was just like Hawaii with every thing that we have growing here, they had them there.
Garret==we missed you there. Went to the Opal shop and got some stone, one for Lori.
My hydro farm missed me and I lost my tomatoes as the pump went out while I was gone…. Will check in later…
Best of luck to former Kahuku and Oregon St. safety, Al Afalava, in his recent pro day at OSU, his testing topped most “combine” results: 40 times 4.42, 4.46, T-Test (20) 4.06, Vertical Jump 40″, broad jump 10.50. 225 lbs reps = 29 times! looks like Troy Polamalu test results! Laie boy moving on up!
wow i didnt know afalava had that kind of speed.
Ive said this before and it’s worth repeating, Gordie Shaw will be THE warrior coach in the spotlight this year….it’s just a Big Ten feeling Im getting…if he connects with our OL and gets these hogs energized, focused and disciplined—watch out! Raphael Ieru included.
morning gang!
happy birthday liz!
congrats to the basebows, now lets go win the series
hope my bracket survives another day
Hau’oli la hanau, MsLiz!!!
Congrats, Brie!
Business this morning then off to the beach to meet a classmate. Behave today!
Esme & whoosh….
Good Morning,
With the Warrior football team opening Spring practice Monday what I like to see differently this year is a greater emphasis on stretching and calisthenics at the beginning of practices. And with less frivolity, and instead with greater seriousness and discipline. What handicaps the team , literally and figuratively, in my opinion, is they’re relaxed approach in this area. And I think it carryovers onto the field, especially where we’re seeing increasingly, and notably last year, a greater number of injuries to the player’s hamstrings, calves, ankles, knees and shoulders. Also, exhorting the players on with discipline, where every players are in cadence in doing their exercises militarily-like are the type of indoctrinations that ingrains into the player’s minds of doing things the right-strict way, which definitely carryovers to the field.
St. Louis HS football team epitomizes doing the calisthenics and stretching the correct way, where every player fully concentrates and they’re concentration is at an elevated level. And focused. In observing their precision like approach in this area I can’t help but think that this carryover to the field.
And this is the point I’m trying to make at the Warriors.
For I’ve been to Warrior practices last year and observing, where half the players are giggling and half aren’t fully concentrating during the stretching and calisthenics. And I see this as deterrents to cultivating discipline on a team and preventing injuries. And this, too, unfortunately carryovers to the field, where it proven and evident-a lot of injuries, a lot of penalties.
The albatross around the Warrior’s neck, so to speak, is in my opinion, on how the stretching and calisthenics are being directed. And going back to my preface, I hope this year the Warrior’s adopt a different approach in this area-because I think it makes for a better team.
Hi Liz! And a most happy and blessed birthday to you!
roysan16,
Gotta agree our team needs to be more focused and disciplined. No need to be ran military style but a more foot in the arse approach is needed. I’ve noticed too when watching practice that the team is very lax and coaches allow this behavior. I would like to see hardwork, discipline, and a more focused effort by the whole team Coaches on down. No problem in having fun but when it’s time to work, it’s time to work! Gotta practice how you play, and if the relaxed attitude is what we take to the field, then we’re in for some serious arse whoopins like last year. Anyway, I’m sure with the new additions of Coach Shaw and Coach Tormey, two experienced and focused guys, we’ll be alright. We have a lot of talent on this team, and I’m optimistic we can have a better season this year than last and continue our success and winning seasons and Bowl Game appearances…
Happy Birthday Aunty Liz
Raphael Ieru,
Good luck this year…
Hope all the OLineman can get it together this year and allow Greg Alexander to have a monster year!
Good morning everyone!

Good Morning Tsaikoland!
Hi A-sports! How was Journey?
I agrre with all Pomai’s compliments about Davone Bess. We can only hope that Colt gets his chance soon! I really wanted the Bears to make a deal for him. If Denver made a deal for him & dumped Cutler, there would be the ideal showcase for Colt. I’m still not convinced Zorn will give him a legitimate shot this year. In any case, I’m already optimistic with the addition of the new heralded punter–no more liability & no more lost games because of the crappy punting (I hope). With the returnees + the new recruits, I’m gearing up for a pay-off & pay-back year!

‘hello rob25 how you’
see no work so good morning aunty
Helloooo….how you KK?
Everything is working fine with me. I getting ready to go to the Les for afternoon BB. You coming?
See you getting too old to “party like it’s 1999!”
Hi Pauoa Boy!
Enjoy life well until you leave for the Sandbox. How long will you be there?
Hi Rob25-
Journey was awesome even with the new guy. The whole concert a-joe is laughing because Arnel Pineda looks and moves like someone we know. He said people approach him at the bank, store and ask him if he’s the lead singer.
Rob25-
KK (aka Grandpa) still got some of it. Bwahaha. And surprisingly, his memory still works most of the time. The “oh, ah, adunno” is just a front.
Happy Birthday Lizzie Girl!
Congrats Brie!
Hey, somebody just posted a picture of the JaMmers.
Roysan has a good point. There’s a time to goof around, and that time isn’t while on the field.
I too have high hopes for Ieru, Coach Shaw and all of the O-line. It’s in them and I think the right coaching will make a huge difference in what we’ll see. We already know that these are tough guys.
I hope the “Forever Foxy” one can get all o’ day’s missions done and still have a happy birfday. 😆
“all o’ the day’s missions” that should read…
ieru….represent….tigers!
Good morning Tsaikos!
Feliz cumpleanos. Liz! Have fun today with Lilu.
Congrats Brie!
wafan – i looked it up in da dikshunary… Tsaiko menehune = homey. 😆
Having fun on da wessai of da Big Island. Thurs went to Puuhonua o Honaunau. Haven’t been there in years. Spent yesterday at the hotel in the pool and walking around. Today we venture over to Hamakua for my sis’ wedding. Pretty windy here at Waikoloa, so kinda chilly.
See u later. esme and out
roysan16 your #61 hits the nail on the head. I agree that militarily-like practice’s, is needed, it falls inline with discipline. As much as we like to think of the players as young men, they are still kids. I also noticed that during the games not all the players are into the game, a lot of them just stand around an joke around with others. IMHO if you are wearing the uniform then you are part of the team so act like it, get into the game, help motivate the guys who are playing, be a team.
Actually, when it’s 7 a.m. in mid-October, and it’s something like the 80th practice, I think some levity is OK.
I think it’s pretty easy to be critical from the outside. But players do care a lot.
For instance, there’s going to be a column tomorrow about how UH needs to cut down on sacks and penalties. Like, gee.
When my kids get bad grades, I don’t scold them because they already know they got a bad grade. I just tell them to try to do better. Positive reinforcement usually gets better results. I think that’s the atmosphere McMackin tries to foster.
al never know u was one tigah.
Spring starts Monday……………at 4.
Howzit Aunty Rob25,
Yeah been trying to but you know how it is when word is as solid as water in our world. Anyway, dates changing, people changing so honestly I dunno who, what, when, or where. I know when it’s time we ready but when that is, who knows? Anyway, if was supposed to be as planned I leaving soon and coming back hopefully by the holidays. I probably going miss majority of the season so I hope the DVR working. Anyway, when I know I let you guys know…
Congratulations Brie . . . I guess.
In the days when dinosaurs freely roamed the earth (back when your folks were in high school) being on the all ILH Paddling Team was not a good thing.
It usually meant you could not sit comfortably during class.
Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
PB . . .
Whenever it is, keep well!
Levity is okay, but that is what seperates the great teams from the good and the great players from the good. Someone or some team is always hungrier, working harder, wanting to take whoever is on top…down! They consistently and continually work with minimal to no time for play, focus and effort is 100% all the time. They have the mindset to work now and play later. Yeah, I know positive reinforcement is the atmosphere Coach Mack is trying to create but then again, sometimes being the nice guy or having the lax atmosphere can back fire and bite you in the arse. Sorry but just my way of thinking and I guess I’m used to the old school in your face style. Regardless I’d just like to see more effort and drive from our team when it matters most…practice! I garrans it’ll carry over to the game and our success will be better. I can praise a team that works hard with 100% effort and discipline that unfortunately loses games than a team that after losing games makes excuses about I should’ve, would’ve, could’ve done this and that and blah blah blah…all it tells me is you didn’t put the time in to work when it mattered most…in practice!
wafan,
thanks, will do…
Happy Birthday LizK and Lilu.
PB
Well, you know that you are in all of our Tsaiko hearts. I will keep you in my prayers and thoughts. I know you can handle. My son is headed to PI to protect some engineers from Commies…his words not mine. He’s excited to be in a combat zone. Oh to be so young and carefree with no sense of mortality! Thanks for keeping me free…
Happy birthday LizKauai!
And congratulations Brie! (I was thinking — after we celebrate your 16th birthday, the Tsai-kos are going to need to practice a song for your 17th. How’s 16 Going on 17 from The Sound of Music?) 😀
wafan: I’m a (Moanalua) Menehune! 😛
The thing about Coach Mack is he always has this grandfatherly vibe to him. But as Stephen has said before, he can sometimes put away that grandfatherly personality and really get fired up. I’d like to see a little bit more of that at times to get the players in order.
And yeah, levity’s okay, but laziness isn’t. I got worried as soon as I saw a starting offensive lineman putting half-‘ōkole effort in stretches during fall camp. That kind of stuff I don’t tolerate well. Seems like all of the younger coaches need to learn to keep an eye out for that kind of stuff. Laziness can lead to lack of discipline, which we definitely saw at times last season.
Good Morning Tsaikos!!
Looking forward to the start of Spring Ball on Monday. I am glad it was moved to 4pm so I get chance to fly back from Kauai to watch.
Aunty Rob25,
Thanks, I bet he having fun. Anyway, thank you for the support…in these times there are some who lose sight of what it is that we all do. Your support is greatly appreciated.
OK I’m off to watch the BaseBows!
Aloha Tsaiko Nation!
Haven’t posted for a long time, but with a rare free moment wanted to say Howzit, I’m still lurking over here on Moku O Keawe and enjoying you folks’ wala’au. This is one great ‘ohana!!
Happy Birthday Liz, and congrats to the Base Bows and Brie and everyone else who deserves it!
Looking forward to Spring practice — eager to see who shows up and makes a real impression!
GO WARRIORS!!
letsgo….yah, but, no ask what year please.
hello again all
PB I also agree with you insight and it not just old school is just the right thing to do.
rob25 enjoy da game and no forget ‘challenge him’ and ‘budubdu ball’ always works. oh yea no forget rally cap.
OK. I’m a little scared that Jason knows every tune from the Sound of Music.
ST true dat, but just as always, everything has it’s time and place, so for those that don’t know that time or place sometimes you need to give them positive reinforcement with the end of your foot (that’s speaking figuratively of course).
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIZ!
It took me longer than expected, but I managed to get Esme’s Mafia Moms all together to do a little line dance for your birthday…Enjoy!

Oh yea all Monarch alum today the vars boys baseball team takes on ‘Iolani @ Ala Wai.
Well this is the end extremely off topic post : )
Happy B Day Liz……………………………….
I have not attended a Warrior practice under the current coaching regime, but who is in charge of leadind stretch and warm ups?
Not to brag or anything but…I’ve probably attended at least 50 practices at a dozen or so different Division 1 colleges and universities in my lifetime. And at about 99% of those team’s practices the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach is in charge of stretching and warm ups. I am of the opinion that stretch and warm ups set the tone and tempo for the rest of practice.
The reason that almost all of these teams employ the S&C coach to lead this part of practice is that it’s a carry over of their charge from offseason and summer workouts as well as the fact this is their area of expertise. Not to mention that most S&C coaches I’ve met and known are very demanding and have an “a-hole” demeanor to them. Players often fear the S&C coach more than the Head Coach. Is this the case at UH? Does Tommy Hef or Mel DeLaura lead stretch or is it one of the Asst Coaches?
BaseBows underway…..
Congrats to you Cpt. Gimpy!…”One Paddle, two Paddle, three Paddle…4 to take me home!”
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIZ K!!!!
KennyPowers,
It is Mel DeLaura leading the pre-practice warm-ups.
BaseBOWS,
Continue to MARCH ON!!!
Rainbow Wahine,
If you start marching, don’t stop, but try spread the “marching” around and most importantly… LISTEN TO UNCLE COOLEN!!!
GO BOWS!!!
Kazz ~ Leading the cheers for the WSB team…jumping over to support the MBB team makes you a true “Athletic Supporter!”
GO WARRIORS!
Thanks Kazz…I do not know Coach DeLaura or have witnessed his style of leading. However having said that, when I did attend a fall training camp prx a few seasons ago under JJ, I did not have a favorable 1st impression of Coach DeLaura. He was dressed in a navy blue cut off sleeve tshirt, denim shorts and barefooted walking around the practice field. I thought he was a friend of one of the coaches in town on vacation observing. Then when I got home and thumbed thru a UH media guide and saw his picture and bio as the S&C coach I was taken a back. I thought he wasn’t dressed professionally or at least looked the part by wearing UH athletic gear. It seemed a bit too casual and lax to me. But then again I also heard that JJ used to play golf at Waialae CC with no shirt and shoes, so I thought that it was just “par for the course” (no pun intended) with JJ’s coaching style. I’m used guys like current USC S&C coach Chris Carlise and Mark Phillippi who was a World Strongest Man Champion and former S&C coach at UNLV back in the mid 1990’s who are professional and are “hammers” that stand on players heads to get them to do things right and with conviction.
Kazz ~ Are you attending the Coach’s Clinic on the 18th? Stretch said he might go for a refresher. Sounds like a cool way to get to know what the coaching philosophy this season will be. If it’s not to your liking, change it! Simple.
Haha nice Uncle Kekoa(:
But I no can paddle until my foot is all g.
),:
Levity, positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement. Watevah it is, its not working as I believe the Warriors have led the WAC in penalties for almost forever. In Macs 1st year they may have been #1 or near the top in all of D1 football. Black uniforms doesn’t mean you have to play like the Oakland Raiders, leaders every year in penalty yards in the NFL.
Everyone talks about the perennial powers like USC, Florida, Oklahoma, etc. Tell you what these perennial powers are disciplined, they do not beat themselves with lolo type penalties and they play with composure & class.
Sorry but I can’t take anymore lolo moments, beeg body or selfish attittudes. Just play hard nosed football with class, get rid of the unnecesary personal fouls, no retaliation walk away & think of the team, stop the “me” and start thinking “we”!
Kekoa,
Right now there is an 85% chance I will be able to attend. I go on vacation the following week.
Brie ~ You paddle with your foot?!…Nah j/k…good for you girl. That’s quite an accomplishment. You have a lot of competition at your level, and so it took some hard work pulling your load.
Keep up the good work, and maybe one day you’ll be with a club that travels to the mainland and you can check out the West Coast competition. They paddle in Regattas that are in the most unlikely parts of CA., like Livermore. just outside of Pleasanton, inside a big old Rock Quarry that is filled with water. Lake Natomas, Folsom Lake, just to name a few more.
Coaches can bear down (and they have tried) but in the end, at this level, it is the players who really provide discipline, motivation, and focus. Coaches can yell all they want (and they have been yelling, making players do bear rolls, etc.), but things won’t change until enough leaders on the team itself stand up, get the message, and set the tone for the others by words and deeds. Particularly with the penalties, too many times the players diss the coaches, and get praise from the players (I have seen this at the games)– part of the culture of the team.
If things are bad enough and the coaches start escalating, then the only way to get something across to some players is to suspend them, then get rid of the bad apples and hope you don’t lose some talent that way.
Bottom of the 8th
BOWS – 4
Over-rated team with the funny looking bird for a mascot – 2
Manoa, good points and this helps explain some things.
I’ve mentioned this once before. Start having consequence to actions, here’s my suggestion. If you have a flagrant personal foul that is uncalled for, I am not talking about clipping, holding, pass interference. It’s the lolo kind that can be prevented.
1st offense, you take the player out for the remainder of that game. 2nd offense you are suspended for the remainder of that game plus the next game. 3rd time, you’re out of that game & kicked off the team for the season. Trust me, have these consequences and NO ONE is going to diss the coaches, NO ONE.
Play with class, I have coached this way & played this way.
Those BaseBows can play. ‘Nuff said!
9th inning about to start. BaseBOWS still up 4-2. 🙂
After a glance at the TV in the lunchroom Nevada up 2-0 on Rainbow Wahine early on. Milca on 2nd, 1 out, and Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu up to bat.
Kazz: It’s supposed to be a rooster.
http://www.coastal.edu/about/chanticleer.html
Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. More specifically, he comes from the Nun’s Priest Tale, a story within Canterbury Tales. The Chanticleer is a proud and fierce rooster who dominates the barnyard.
For the best description of Chanticleer, we turn to Chaucer’s words. “For crowing there was not his equal in all the land. His voice was merrier than the merry organ that plays in church, and his crowing from his resting place was more trustworthy than a clock. His comb was redder than fine coral and turreted like a castle wall, his bill was black and shone like a jet, and his legs and toes were like azure. His nails were whiter than the lily and his feathers were like burnished gold.” With all of his splendor and great looks, Chanticleer is also greatly feared and mightily respected by all.
Now, the picture of Chanticleer is clear. As Chanticleer proves in the Nun’s Priest Tale, he is much more than a pretty face. He uses his great wit, knowledge, and cunning to come out on top every time. This makes Chanticleer a perfect fit for Coastal Carolina Athletics. Chanticleer epitomizes a CCU student-athlete in every way. From his athletic and strong build, to his vast knowledge, to his mindset to always finish on top, Chanticleer is the mirror image of CCU’s Chanticleers.
Top of the 9th, CCU up to bat, NO outs, CCU homer.
Bows 4-3.
Kimpira!!!
TWO OUTS ON CCU AT THE TOP OF THE 9TH!!!
BOWS LEAD 4-3…. 😯

They went!
Taking 3 of 4 from CCU will definitely boost the RPI. The ‘Bows RPI was 13 heading into today’s game. Could be 10 once the weekend is over.
Oh my! Where have I been? Sorry, kinda MIA lately. Hooray for Ralph! I still have my Tiger pride. 🙂
This Baseball team is gonna go far… I’m not familiar with college baseball rankings, but do the ‘Bows have too many losses to eventually be ranked?
Joltin’ Kolten… how does that sound?
Quite a lot of games left in the baseball season (50 or so), I believe. More than enough time to break the top 30 or 25 or whatever. An automatic berth to the NCAA regionals might not be out of the question if the BaseBows can keep the pedal to the metal.
50 or so _total_ games in the season, I meant to say. So the BaseBows’ season is “half over” heading into conference play.
Softball Wahine need to start finding their bats again.
So far this has not felt like a typical Wahine Softball “offense”.
Amanda Tauali’i is the real deal though and Tanisha Milca is right behind her, but where is the rest? Warwick? Andrade? Need the seniors to step up.
Pau.
Wahine threatened at the bottom of the 7th, but to no avail…
Nevada leads series 2-0. 👿
Happy Bifday to LizK!!!
Congrats to Brie!!!
UH Baseball:
I think they are playing very well and hope this carries over to the WAC.
Historically, however, basketball and baseball, for whatever reason, seem to “fall apart” once they start WAC play. Hope history doesn’t repeat this year as it appears that the baseball team is playing very well against some very good teams during the “pre-season”. If not, then their RPI will drop considerably and fast as the WAC is not considered a strong baseball conference. Yea, yea, Fresno St won the national championship last year, but it was a fluke.
Unless there is some agreement to “upgrade athletics” within the WAC by all Presidents and AD’s, it will continue to be a mediocre conference. Many school Presidents/Chancellors, will put academics ahead of athletics. PERIOD!!!!!! Can it go hand-in-hand?
A-House,
Don’t forget that the students have a lot of say in their athletic programs–Utah State’s students voted for their second huge Athletic fee increase in the past few years. That additional money will help Utah State really boost their athletic programs, which will be great for the WAC.
I wish UH’s students would get behind Athletics in a similar manner, but I understand this is a hard time to try to get more money from students…many of whom don’t attend UH sporting events.
Feature article on David Veikune on this site that analyzes players that Arizona might draft.
I like the idea of Veikune and LaBoy on the field together.
It is nice that Pres. Obama has brought recognition to Kona Blue Water Farms.
happy birthday LIZ-K!! please have a great day!
aloha warriors n everyone!
MANEO !!!
Happy Birthday to Liz and Lilu…forever 39!
It was so much fun having some of the Tsaiko’s with us
last night! I think some of the pictures are on FB…..
Happy birthday Liz,
Way to go Brie!
Go Warriors! Spring is in the air.
I forgot:
Happy Birthday Liz!
Congrats Brie!
Yea – congratulations to Brie
If the baseball Bows continue play in the WAC like they have done in preseason, we could well see a resurgence of the Bows and hopefully, a “cash” winner for the first time in a long, long while. This would be a great boost for JD in balancing the budget.
I have not kept track of attendance, but it would appear it is well over a 1,200 average per game. Miss those days when we were there with 4,000+ fans.
It appears that the 2009 Bows will be that “small” ball hitting club, getting runners on base and move them along with bunts and sacrifice hits, and outscoring their opponents. Reminds me of the 1970s – early 1980s teams that Coach Les put together. HRs are nice but a bunch of singles will score more runs over the long haul. Just like Japan did in the recently completed World Baseball Cup series.
Watching the Kamehameha – Punahou contest on OC16. If the Warriors win it’ll make for a great week end of baseball for my hale. Warriors up 1-0 in the first.
GO WARRIORS!!!
Thanks for the reply, BF. Let’s hope the Bows stay on this curve.
WOW!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY to LizK and Lilu!!!
Terrific achievement BRIE!!! Way 2 go!!!
and Jason….MOHS done great at the robotics contest…YEAH!!!
This Bow baseball team is a unique Chinese puzzle with no corners–yet, best fits, when pieced together- inside-out.
Take our pitchers as an example.
We have no pitchers that are over powering with the exception of Sam Spangler who has 24 KOs in 22 innings.
Our workhorse, Jayson Kramer, a senior, has logged over 40 innings with a respectable 3.60 era but is 1-3.
Next is Matt Sisto, a 6’5″ frosh with a 3.69 era and 31.2 innings but sporting a 3-1 record.
Then there is Josh Slaats, a 6 5″ So. with 2 wins and a team leading 3 saves with barely 13 innings in relief.
How about Jared Alexander, who we have high expectations this year, struggling with a 0-1 record over 19 plus.
How about our frosh–Matt Sisto, Conner Little and Lenny Linsky–@ 6 5″, 6 6″ and 6 3″ they look like they belong on a hardwood dunking hoops–not on a diamond tossing BBs.
Combined they have accounted for 57 innings, 6 wins and a solo loss. They bring heat too with 35 KOs.
Hitting wise–go figure.
This is the worst hitting team coached by Keith Komeiji in his 4 years with Coach Mike.
In 2006 we hit .297 and in 2007 we smacked a whopping .305.
In 25 games, we are hitting a paltry .245 compared to our opponents .280.
Vinnie Caltricala is the only regular over .300, we have 5 starters hitting below the team average:
Garcia, .222;
Roquemore, .229;
McDonald, .231;
Van Dorrnum, .229; and
Chris Johnson, .190!
Coach Mike calls his team “tough and resilient”.
A “testament to their character” he declares.
Frankly, I like what Chris Johnson says,
“Everybody contributes, we go deep”.
Yup, like his dramatic pinch-hit HR in the 9th against Portland State.
Like Kevin McDonald leading the team in KOs, one per 3 ABs, but also leads the team with 21 RBIs, including a plunk on the arm with the bases loaded against Costal Carolina that brought in the winning run.
Hmmmm….it’s tough putting this puzzle together without the corners, ugh?
Bruddah Kazz….remember, when you call the other team “over-rated”, it’s an indirect slap at the UH (as others have mentioned). I’d like to think that the Bows are that good that they can beat a ranked team 3 out of 4. Man, they are looking better and better as the youngsters get experience under their belts. I think they have a great upside! It’s a race between getting enough high level consistency over time before the end of the season arrives. It’s going to be interesting to watch! To be on the short end of a no-hitter and then win the next three…they sure have my respect…
Garret
Thanks for the articles. Hoping for nothing but the best results for the “stuff” you’re working on.
Happy Birthday, LizK! Cheers to a fellow March woman…woohoo!
Kekoa,
Here’s another SNL clip for freak out your wife! Bwahahahaha!!!!!!!

BG wrote”
“It’s going to be interesting to watch”. sic (the rainbows season).
Look, this team is unconscious.
They have no memory.
It’s not so interesting as “how they do it” as much as “when they do it”.
Didnt we start off the season getting tooled by nationally ranked UC Irvine?
Before you could buy a hotdog at the Les, we are 3-6 and screaming for Donovan not to roll over Trapasso’s contract another year.
“No mas” and “remember Jim Bolla!” were the gentler chants being shouted.
OK.
So this team goes 13-3 since then.
That’s one “when”.
In betwix they get embarrassed 13-2 by host Portland State,
then beat Oregon and comeback against the the Pilots to capture that inaugural tournament at Glanville’s home.
There’s another “when”.
Enter, Costal Carolina, 18-4, #18 ranking, and their pint sized cross-over pitcher, who baffles the bows with a no hitter on Thursday night….a bud & abbott performance by our boyz.
You guyz know the rest…the most recent “when”.
Look, we dont turn the half-way mark until after our home series with WAC rival San Jose State.
However, what we are witnessing is the same spunk that made Fresno State successful last year–a short memory and a toughness that is internally infectious.
Im not comparing talent–that would be unfair and ridiculous.
Yet, the pundits were at at a loss to explain “when”–until it was over and the fat lady in Omaha belted out a Mufi tune.
btw…..lost in the shuffle (or did i miss it?).
anyone interested in taking up a collection to repaire the video tower?
what are the needs?
perhaps we can go see what needs to be done on monday.
perhaps we can generate enough dough to remedy this thing.
could we label it “tsaiko-bilt”?
st. i’ll see you monday at the field. perhaps i’ll drag an engineer along with me.
let’s do this!
i forgot to ask…..who’s in for this project?
Congratulations to Shawn Withy-Allen and the Fayetteville Guard for starting the season 2-0. They fell behind 20-6 and then outscored their opponent 51-12 to get the win.
BG,
Hi! I’m glad you like the articles. Work is going well but the two proposals I just submitted would be huge.
One proposal submitted last year was approved, the contract was awarded, and they were supposed to finish up the contract so that we could start work in January. The government contract folks still haven’t finished the paperwork yet, despite everybody signing off on it. The sad thing is that this is for something that is being used by our troops in the field and they could use the improved capability. So, winning a contract doesn’t necessarily mean that the work can be done anytime soon, sadly.
tks for the baseball updates kazz, crw, wf, a-house, bf,
any time they win and you guys are happy it makes me happy to see your excitement, esp. Kazz’s ‘”ooovvvvvvvvvvvvveeraaattted”” (lol, actually I did)
keep it going coach trap and team… and kazz, crw, wf, a-house, bf,
going back to ST#88- it’ll be interesting to see what twist the writer is going to take in tomorrows column about the OL and penalties…do give him credit for going after the higher hanging fruit, for it’s not easy writing a story like this that goes against the grain.
Tom mentioned that he liked the free play links and I hope that he likes today’s group…
Scary thought–maybe we don’t need to worry about global warming because Yellowstone is due for an eruption that could extinguish human life on Earth? Yellowstone has erupted every 600,000 years or so and it has been 640,000 years since its last eruption.
ummmm, excuse me, you are no longer allowed to use the name PowderPuff. Rob25, (J)J and I have officially changed your name to PowerPuss.
Interesting study found that certain types of exercise (like cold water swimming) can actually result in weight gain due to a craving for high-fat foods, while other exercises actually reduce the desire to eat.
Study found that rising temperatures increase the risk of severe headaches. Every 5 Celsius increase meant a 7.5% increase in ER visits for headaches.
British nightclub boss wrote a letter to police denying that drug use was widely used at her club…and police found that her letter was covered in cocaine!
Judge rules that New Zealand court papers can be served via Facebook, which was earlier approved in a case in Australia.
Free play links pau.
oooopppppsss, it supposed to be PowderPuss…
Good to see the Wahine get at least a win the series against Nevada.
The problems at the plate continue though…
But that’s why the season continues. More chances to improve!
GO BOWS!!!!
roysan, in the case of our OL–IMO, it’s not the fruit that spoils the bunch, it’s the tree.
Hope this writer has the football intuition to recognize Gordie Shaw was brought in as part of a solution…and not to perpetuate the problem.
In this example, we got to believe.
Our local athletes comprise most of our OL stock.
They have the inherent talent and intangibles to excel at this position.
That is borne out consistently every year, among a cross section of schools nationwide and by the number of D1A college recruiters seeking OL from our State.
More than any other FB position on the grid–our polynesian OL prospects perform at a high level.
Like anything else, it takes a great conductor to produce great music from his symhony.
This is true in music and equally true in coaching OLM.
Good music needs no introduction….neither does a workhorse line.
ST,
I can’t remember if I said this earlier but you were right. Amanda “AJ” Tauali’i is the real deal.
That’s right…it is now officially Powderpuss…and how dare you think that I conjured up that name 👿
You have to earn the right to be called Powderpuff again
It was definitely the Puss and Wuss no show last night!
Yea BaseBows…those CCU Chanticleers were scrappy but see what a no-no will do to a team….”CHALLENGE HIM” all of them.
OK midori7, uhfan808 and I did our part to stimulate the economy, had dinner at Bucca Di Beppo and then Menchies yougurt for dessert…I’m exhausted. All that and a game of BB and most 2/3 game of SB…what a day!
Re: OL.
The story just says that it should be a priority to cut down on sacks and penalties.
I was just saying that’s an obvious point. I mean, what should he say? They should give up more sacks.
It would like writing a story saying a quarterback shouldn’t throw interceptions.
Anyway, I saw the end zone shots of the Notre Dame game, and most of UH sacks were on loops and stunts against the guards or when Alexander left the pocket. I was expecting to see more of the blame on the tackles, but it wasn’t so.
That means that the focus will be on Ieru and Hisatake.
st….check your email please.
This person noted the Rainbows in his Saturday analysis of the College Baseball happenings:

Rob25- I’m proud of you young ladies. More of us should follow your leads to get out there and stimulate this economy!

A-Sports will recognize some of the people in the pix on my blog.

You always make people feel welcomed as if we have known you as our real aunt. Your hospitable spirit is admirable. Many birthday wishes to you. Blessings to you and yours.
Good Sunday morning everyone!
RE: article about the OL and the need to reduce sacks, etc.
Is it really news if the obvious and known are stated?
al . . .
Count me in for some $$ for the video platform repair!
I wonder, how badly damaged is the platform? Does it require welding and tubing for railings, a new platform (a heavy gauge wire mesh would allow for drainage and improve safety), a new hydraulic system to raise and lower it?
Snoqualmie Pass got another one to two feet of snow yesterday. Dang.
We never saw the sun, either.
Wafan (Yeti) ~
Can you keep the noise down to a low roar? Some of us are trying to get some sleep so we can attend a very important Wessai breakfast and services to follow this AM…10Q!
Kekoa . . .
‘
Could not keep the noise down. The howling winds, water running down the drains and the snapping of tree branches all contributed. I had to shout just to hear myself think.
Cannot blame the sounds of the cannon from Ft. Lewis or the roar of the aircraft from McChord, though! I like those sounds of freedom!!!
And, Yeti? More like Sasquatch. Just not as hairy.
Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
One more.
200!!!
Oops. Excuse the noise.
Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
My work is done this morning. Time for breakfast.
Rausch had his name spelled wrong in ST’s article today, though it was correct the other times he was mentioned in the article. That is easy to miss…the article was great to read though. It is great that Spring Training is about to start so we’ll be getting to read about the Warriors every day!
So much for sleeping in…
Thanks for the good read, ST!
Aloha Kakahiaka!!!
(clang clang clang) … time for Sunday breakfast and worship!
Morning Tsai-ko’s!!!
Hi Liz, nice pic!! Wooo hooooo!!!
Hi Coloma….
Thanks for the other night…was good fun!
I like the crazy carefree sisterhood spirit of the pink side!!
Gotta get ready for Wessai breakfast and memorial service…then mebbe Tarjay? 😯
Good morning all and mahalo to ST for another informative article.
Just a few comments.
MAC hasnt changed on D–he was always attacking.
His problem is in the backside– once he blitzed he exposed our perimeter and safeties–we were vulnerable and repeatedly got burned.
We need a proven corner coach and solid personnel at that perimeter position to make the frontal assault work.
Ditto with our safeties who were often a step-or-two, too slow on arrival.
On O, part of the problem was in our route application.
Takes too long:
too long to learn, too long to develop.
Make it simple so we can utilize the talent we have in inventory.
Last year, Coach Ron talked about going back to basics with the direct snap and an extra option in reads for his wideouts.
This year we are redefining basics of the RNS—ugh?
Last year we used an OL coach to manage our RBs–this year–arent we doing the same with another OL coach?
Im still puzzled who will be running the Offensive show.
It showed in our vascilation of QBs, with our time management, play selection and game plan.
These are “basic” changes I look forward to seeing on O.
Rob25: I THINK we left about 12-ish….wooooohoooo…Grandma was calling “wea you guys stay? Your keiki all sleeping….” hahahaha…

Hi Colomaohana!
Sounds like you all had a good time. Maybe will make it to next one.
Besides calling Kyle “Keith”, it sounds like Koakane has condensed your name to “Cohana”. By next week you may be “Cona”.
I’m going to be taking a walk through the Pink Side sometime soon. See you there.

There is currently a sale on the Amazon Kindle 2, the revolutionary reading device from Amazon.com. This is the first sale since its release, and it won’t last long; this is not a joke or a scam, just an important update for those who have not yet picked up an Amazon Kindle. You can find it here:

I agree with you 100% – things happen for a reason. I found this by accident and noticed that we have some things in common. Thats what I love about the Internet, every blog is like a box of chocolates 🙂 Thanks – Great blog.
