Date change for Heather McMackin's clinic

Heather McMackin’s football clinic for women has been moved from Aug. 21 to Aug. 19. Apparently, the annual Pigskin Pigout is reserved for the Aug. 21. Greg McMackin said more than 100 women have signed up for the clinic.

After much pleading (whining) from a certain Punchbowl-based reader, it finally was time to show the big men working out.

Here’s offensive line coach Brian Smith. While the players are working out on their own in one area, Smith and two other coaches — defensive coordinator Cal Lee and running back coach Alex Gerke — are working out in a room. Heres Mr. Smith:

I thought this was an interesting sign. I guess they didn’t get the memo about the arena being named after Stan Sheriff:

It’s tough getting old. I sat next to SJ-Macro at lunch today, forgetting that it was his birthday. So sorry. And happy birthday, Jerry (pictured below in the green hat).

Moooooooo! Yes, for those who give a chit(chat), we had another cattle call today, this in honor of Ronnie. Here’s the guest of honor and her family:

And here’s Ronnie with her best friend Rob25. Both are Kamehameha Schools graduates. Rob25 was in the same class as a well-known personality. Here’s a hint: “I hope you’re all having a … pleasant evening.”

Hey ST – thanks for posting new pictures. Good to see them working out. I am sure the Tsaikettes are thankful for more shirtless football players but somehow I have a feeling that they prefer the other guys.

  7. Stephen Tsai June 17, 2008 10:27 am

By the way, I’m still using the old camera. I haven’t figured out the new one yet.

  8. bonar June 17, 2008 10:27 am

any predictions on today’s ‘ship game?

  9. Stretch June 17, 2008 10:29 am

ST – be a man a figure it out by trial and error. DO NOT read the manual!!

  10. Stephen Tsai June 17, 2008 10:30 am

    Bonar:
I just hate the finals format.
Through the divisional championship, the home-away formula is 2-2-1-1-1.
Then for the final it goes to 2-3-2. I think it gives too much of an advantage to the team with four home games. 1) It’s too hard to win three in a row at home. 2) It’s too hard to win the final two games on the road.

  11. Stephen Tsai June 17, 2008 10:31 am

    Stretch:
Trial and error is how I ended up with that last photo in yesterday’s entry.

Cool. I’ll be there. I’ll be there. Just call my name, and … I’ll be there.
OK, one thing puzzles me about that song. How come he says: “Look over your shoulders.” Isn’t that kind of hard to look over both shoulders at once?

    J/K…

Stretch, you know it…the ladies like the “divas” on the team…like QB…as a defensive player myself, I had to sneak that one in….mwahahahahaha

ST, stretch is right, no real man reads a manual..

ST – I’ve seen my friend have his two eye’s looking in different directions, it IS possible. Then again, it was his birthday, he had tons of shots, he just puked and it was right before we dumped him in the back of the truck to take him home.

  23. homey ® June 17, 2008 10:42 am

Yup, all those sex manuals are for women. We don’t need them.

  24. bonar June 17, 2008 10:43 am

Did I read that one of the teams has started working out with kettlebells? Kettlebells are now the rage. Any idea whether Mel will be incorporating that type of training with the team?

  25. homey ® June 17, 2008 10:43 am

The manuals I mean. We do need the women. My apologies.

  26. las vegas June 17, 2008 10:44 am

    Homey,
when you say “we don’t need them” do you mean manuals or women?

  27. Stretch June 17, 2008 10:45 am

homey – maybe you should go ask the “UH Sweethearts” about the manuals, it looks like they just finished a tough workout.

  28. bonar June 17, 2008 10:45 am

I was very disappointed in KG’s performance. I will never believe the statement one commentator made about KG-“MJ was the most clutch performer in the NBA-KG is the least clutch performer.”

  29. las vegas June 17, 2008 10:46 am

    What is a ‘kettlebell’?
A ‘kettlebell’ or girya (Russ.) is a traditional Russian cast iron weight that looks like a cannonball with a handle. The ultimate tool for extreme all-round fitness.

The kettlebell goes way back, it first appeared in a Russian dictionary in 1704 (Cherkikh, 1994). So popular were kettlebells in Tsarist Russia that any strongman or weightlifter was referred to as a girevik, or ‘a kettlebell man’

    i didn’t know that

  32. bonar June 17, 2008 10:50 am

#29, you could probably find training regiments on youtube. In recent years, the MMA guys have turned to kettleball training and some teams in the “mainstream” sports have begun using them.

  33. (Jesse) James June 17, 2008 10:52 am

homey – now I am really hurt…just call me “hurt feelings” I should make a web site…..MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  34. homey ® June 17, 2008 10:52 am

Stretch – What UH Sweethearts? Point them out and I’ll go ask them.

bonar – KG has his moments. Tiger showed his clutch performance. But then again so did Rocco. Two strokes behind to start off on Sunday and he ties Tiger. Three strokes down on Monday and he comes back to take the lead. Wait, we were talking about basketball. I’d like LA to win and even up the series and in the final game go into double overtime…

  35. 808Chef June 17, 2008 10:53 am

Interesting article about sons playing QB when their father is the head coach of a D-I program. I didn’t realize that Dan Hawkins’ younger son is starting at BSU this fall. Interesting (and sad) that the son of Minnesota’s head coach has to transfer to find playing time at QB.

Since the end of World War II, only nine sons have started at quarterback for their head-coaching dads in major college football. The Hawkinses, Dan and Cody, are the most recent duo to join this club. As a redshirt freshman in 2007, Cody Hawkins led the Buffaloes to six wins, four more than they had the year before, and a bowl bid.

It is just a matter of time before the Hawkinses are joined by the Dodges at North Texas. Quarterback Riley Dodge decommitted from Texas to play for his dad again. In 2006, Todd Dodge coached Southlake (Tex.) Carroll High to its fourth 5A title in five seasons, and Riley became the state 5A player of the year. After the 43-29 victory over Austin Westlake in the championship game, Todd Dodge said, “To hug my son and finally get to him after all the kids mobbing the field and everything, that was pretty special. Really, really special.”

Todd Dodge recalls his son’s first two years in high school. It is not a good memory.

“I was really unfair to him,” Todd said. “I treated him differently than my other quarterbacks. I was too hard on him, and I was probably too vocal toward him in practice.”

In spring 2006, Todd went to a coaching clinic and ran into a mentor. Bill Bryant is a high school legend in Texas. He sent two sons to play for Texas, one of whom was a teammate of Dodge’s.

“When you coach your son,” Bryant told Dodge, “you’re the two most important people in his life. You’re the coach, and you’re his father. Don’t rob him of either one.”

    The advice changed Dodge’s life.

Dan Hawkins recalls being at Boise State, where he coached for eight years, the last five (2001-05) as head coach. He called a family meeting to discuss a couple of schools that had begun trying to lure him out of Idaho.

“It’s pretty serious,” Dan said, “life-changing, moving, changing schools. And I remember he had a piece of paper. And he’s like, ‘Dad, I really don’t care, but can you show me how you guys do zone pass?’

  49. Garret June 17, 2008 11:03 am

I can understand why a coach might find it awkward recruiting his own son.

Judging by these two coaches, the first rule of recruiting your son is: Don’t.

After Cody Hawkins went to the summer camps conducted by Bob Johnson, the quarterback guru who started the Elite 11, Johnson told Dan Hawkins, “You better stop recruiting all these other guys and walk down the hall and knock on your son’s bedroom and beg him to play for you.”

“Once I got calls from other coaches,” Cody Hawkins said, “he started dropping hints a little bit. At the dinner table, he would say, “You’ll get these home-cooked meals if you stay at home.'”

Cody laughed as he described it, which, according to his dad, is exactly how he meant it. Dan Hawkins dealt with his son’s recruitment, and his climb up the depth chart, in exactly the same way. He recused himself. Hawkins didn’t know whether his son would choose Colorado or the school Hawkins had left a few weeks earlier, Boise State, until signing day, when the Buffaloes’ fax machine spit out a letter of intent with Cody Hawkins’ signature on it.

  50. Garret June 17, 2008 11:05 am

Most times it doesn’t work out when a son plays for the father.

Judging by the Dodges and the Hawkinses, it would appear that the only endings are happy ones. They are the exception. At least 13 quarterbacks have suited up for their dads and never started, or even played. The most recent is at Minnesota, where Clint Brewster switched his commitment in January 2007 from Illinois to Minnesota. After a year in which freshman Adam Weber gained more than 3,500 yards in total offense and accounted for 29 touchdowns, Clint Brewster’s dream of playing for his dad is receding.

Tim Brewster comes from the just-spell-my-name-right school of public relations. Brewster, in his 18 months with the Gophers, has offered to open nearly every door in his program to the national media. Yet he refused several requests from ESPN.com to discuss his son for this story.

Last week, Brewster told the St. Paul Pioneer Press, “… Clint’s going to have to make a decision. Does he stay at the University of Minnesota and just continue to compete, or does he look for where he may have a better opportunity, and go play?”

Yep, Stretch owes me dinner. Celtics will WIN TODAY!

  57. al June 17, 2008 11:38 am

no, no, no……history was made to be broken.

the lakers should have won game two and game four, they had outplayed the celtics in all but one game, the first. their problem has been lack of focus to “finish”.

with their backs to the wall, like a cornered alley cat, these lakers will pull up their pants and take the next two games thus, “stealing” one from the celtics right in front of all their fans and all those championship flags of the past.

stretch, we could order a special double lobster dinner for you on thursday.

Hey, al, have you figured out the total price you will collect from each person at Gengi’s? Is it $21?

  60. bonar June 17, 2008 12:00 pm

Garrett: Thanks, I couldn’t remember where I saw it. Interesting how new training methods gain in popularity every couple of years. I think each successive one builds on the other. When I was younger, it was plyometrics (sp?). A personal trainer in town has opened up a training center in town I think that’s a relatively small center, very little weights, light if anything, use of heavy medicine balls, I believe some ketttlebells, plyos, and each training session is only 20 minutes in small groups. each person works a few minutes at each station and there is little/no resting.

last year i seem to recall the Coaches feeling ok about depth on the offensive line? i got this “recall” from the Na Koa lunches at Willows, mainly McKnight. if true i’d think this translates into good linemen this season too?

more anxious to hear/read how our D-line shapes up, they’ll have to at least hold their ground so the LB’s can make plays. we already know how good they are.

If you don’t believe me, go back to the last blog and read my early morning post. Now I’m so upset I can’t go back to sleep again! 😆

  87. al June 17, 2008 1:53 pm

let the record show that “no worry, beef curry” was first intro’d to gigi from some washington middle graduate. whereupon, she later discovered that same saying on a tshirt.

  88. al June 17, 2008 1:56 pm

actually kid last night was good.

i slept at 0100 and was awakened by the boss who was awakened by the puppies at 0500. the mama gave the pups some “juice” and after 20 minutes of romping they went back moemoe. they(we) didn’t get up until 0830. that was the best sleep we have had in weeks!

  91. Garret June 17, 2008 2:03 pm

    bother you?,

The only thing you should be bothered by is why you are looking to be so negative that you are seeing things that are not there. I was NOT posting to claim credit for something–I could care less about that.

When I read bonar’s post, it looked to me that he remembered seeing something about kettlebells but didn’t remember where he read it or what team was using it. So, I provided the information that it was posted in a recent blog here, gave an estimate of when it was posted, and told him what team was using the kettlebells in the article. Providing my name as the poster helps in the search for the article if anyone wants to search for the article on the old blogs.

If you see bonar’s post a few posts after yours, it appears that my interpretation of his comment was correct. Instead of getting upset like you, he thanked me for jogging his memory.

Is it more local to try to help out a Warrior fan or is it more local to attack someone for your twisted interpretation of his words?

  92. SoGood June 17, 2008 2:03 pm

    g-nalo,
I loved McKnight because of his personality but I always questioned the fact that technique wasn’t ever stressed…at least from his comments. He would say things like we’ll get the job done. He was highly entertaining at Na Koa film reviews.
I think we’ve got great oline talent still and what I’m looking forward from Coach Smith is a return of emphasis on technique. Smith is a coach Cav protege and sorry but he was the best pass blocking oline coach IMO. Should be interesting with LaCount, please get your AA, coming in Fall. Plus Hisatake was projected as a stud and I think this is his last year? All I know is our interior will be solid but concern with the tackles cause Georgia…well lets not bring it up anymore but we need to be ready for the Floriday speed off the edge.
I hope the guys gel because the key to our O isn’t qb =D but the boys up front.

  93. al June 17, 2008 2:08 pm

    eh kid….go write a book!

oh, yah, you are. not pau yet bull?

  94. Da Punchbowl Kid June 17, 2008 2:09 pm

    So Good,
Great post. We’ve had the talent up front, now we have some good technical coaching.

  95. gigi-hawaii © June 17, 2008 2:10 pm

Al, talking about sleep — I got 10 hrs sleep last night after getting just 1 hr on the plane. But now at 2:05 pm, I am still tired! Maybe take a short nap.

  96. g-nalo June 17, 2008 2:12 pm

    SoGood,

yeah McKnight was REALLY entertaining and i always hoped it was his turn. didn’t realize the part about techniques, thanks.

in any case, yeah he’s moved on and we have a new O-line Coach. one of the first things Brian Smith talked about was teaching so i’m sure he’ll instill techniques.

no doubt the offensive line is important too so not going to ‘debate’ if its QB or O-line. its ok if we agree to disagree, we both want the offense to simply go and in the end, they all have to jell.

  97. SoGood June 17, 2008 2:24 pm

No worries…not trying to debate about anything. Just making fun of how much we all loved Colt and the QB position is always the glorified position but we can’t forget that it all starts up front.
Should be very interesting to see Coach Smith at the Na Koa luncheons since he’s not nearly as animated as McKnight or even Cav….or maybe he’ll prove us wrong =)

We have a ton of talent for the oline and I’m excited to see who will rise to the top. Man, guys like Hisatake, Ieru, Thomas, and Lafu who haven’t even cracked the starting line up and you’ve got Ah-Soon moving positions, LaCount coming in so what about Steiny….should be super interesting and competition only brings out the best.

  98. MeiLing June 17, 2008 2:46 pm

ST ~ Thanks for the pics of the workouts! Rocky & Raphael have big “paws”. Good to hear that the coaches are also working out. Some of them need a bit… leading by example.

  99. Kazz June 17, 2008 2:56 pm

McKnight was a good personality to have, but now we’ve got the man they call “Gerke”.

This guy is intense and he stresses technique. I don’t think we’ll need to worry about fumbles for a while.

  100. Kazz June 17, 2008 3:00 pm

    BTW,

Is it just me or does Ray Hisatake look like he dropped a lot of weight?

Carpooling is encouraged for Thursday evening– or just get dropped off at Genji’s. While you might not need a designated driver–you might need a ride home. Designated drivers or potential designated drivers are asked to be identified here…

    So far:

SteveM (w/Peaches & Liz) — Honoulu area to Nuuanu
BG (w/Betty) — Genji to Mililani

This year the pre fun for the warriors is so much more coordinated even if it is unsupervised. the one thing that stands out is the pre season hype isn’t about just a few good men, but about the entire team. it seems that everyone has a chance to show their mettle as compared to the past when only a chosen few got any recognition. the team concept will and should get the warriors through some close games because they all believe in each other.

  109. homey ® June 17, 2008 3:43 pm

That was a great cattle call today! Thanks to everyone who stopped by, especially our honored guests — the soon-departing Abe Markowitz (remember, no Reggie Bush benefits) and the beautiful Ronnie and her kids. Mahalo to koakane for the ride. BTW — chocolate fudge is one winnah. Strawberry not bad. Vanilla bean, eh, no. (Wendy’s Frosty shakes, if anyone is curious.)

I’m sad to see I’m not the only one who was concerned about McKnight and the apparent lack of emphasis on technique — I was hoping that I was imagining things. But that’s why I’m really looking forward to Brian Smith coaching the boys.

  114. MeiLing June 17, 2008 4:09 pm

Maa Tanuvasa and Al Noga need to be coaches on this UH team. Who are these guys now coaching? What have they done? Can any of them measure up to Maa and Al? Brian Smith vs an Al Noga as a coach. No comparison. As a player, give me Al. Brian Smith vs a Maa Tanuvasa. Again. No comparison. As a player, give me as a coach the guy who played in “the show.” Did Smith play in the show?

As a player, I would want to be coached by guys who understand what it takes to be the best, the training, sacrifice, the guts, guys who have demonstrated to the rest of the world they are part of the most elite of all athletes, guys who understand what it takes to make it to the highest level of the game. Maa and Al understand this. Does Smith?

I will not cheer for UH until the day arrives when it starts to pick real talent starting from the coaching positions. Until then, I’ll continue to cheer for Navy, Stanford, USC, Washington, and Oregon.

  146. Kazz June 17, 2008 5:37 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

I really have no beef with replica jerseys other than the fact that the sleeves are too long.

But for me, my opu stay vibrant so when I wear my authentic UH jersey I have to make shua I went gym dat week. At least with the baggy cut of the replica jerseys can hide ’em shall kine.

  147. Pauoa Boy June 17, 2008 5:38 pm

prepplayer – I do believe Coach Smith is an Oline coach and the two former players you are reffering to are both Dline guys. Coach Smith has experience on the OL as he was also a former UH player and has coaching experience. So I’m not sure why Tanuvasa and Noga would be compared to Coach Smith as they would be coaching opposite sides of the ball anyway. Besides I think Ma’a is coaching high school football. Maybe you need to do some research cause it’s obvious you are a prep player, stick to JV bruddah, you not Varisty material!

  154. Kazz June 17, 2008 5:50 pm

    RE: Funaki.

If the season started today, I would have to say Funaki gets the nod.

I can’t remember who said it, but with the talent and speed of Florida’s front seven, it will be key for a QB to be able to manuever out of the pocket when pressured.

I’m sure a bit of an option play or bootleg is something most people would not expect from UH.

With 4-wide the opposing D should already be prepared to spread it out a bit anyway so a bit of Florida’s own medicine could be the trick…

    Eh we shall see…

  155. Pauoa Boy June 17, 2008 5:50 pm

  157. Curt June 17, 2008 5:55 pm

Pauoa Boy: You’re right; he’s totally a class act. He was humble, friendly, and let my wife take a couple of photos. He said the new quarterbacks looked pretty good. I’d like to see him do well. I’d also like to see how the other quarterbacks throw…soon enough.

  158. Pauoa Boy June 17, 2008 5:58 pm

I’m sure Coach Lee has some tricks up his sleeve and will adjust. I do believe that Inoke should start at this point as well. Would love to see more running in our R & S attack, I think our RB’s have the speed to counter Florida’s D. Anyway, we shall see fo shua.

  164. Pauoa Boy June 17, 2008 6:05 pm

Curt – With the current QB’s we have on the roster I’m sure they will keep the scoreboards lit up consistently for years to come. Right now Inoke has the upperhand on the starting position with Graunke on his heels as them two are the most experienced. Greg Alexander is huge and has a huge arm but his mobility is so/so. Brent Rausch I think is going to be special, tall, mobile, solid arm, Steele Jantz only a freshman but has lots of potential and with proper coaching could be another special guy. The rest of the QB’s are solid guys but haven’t seen much of them because of injury, etc…

You’re right. It’s NEVER soon enuff…less than 2 and a half months away in the Swamp.

Even though Graunke and Funaki ended spring as co-number ones, I sense that Inoke might have graded slightly better.

  170. Kazz June 17, 2008 6:09 pm

    brew808,

    I would guess that #’s 44, 4, 2, 53, 85, and 86 would be available.

Some people think #15 would still be offered but I doubt it.

Realistically, already what I assume would be too many #s to have premade so I think it will be down to #s 44, 53, 2, and/or 4.

For me, I would get a #53 jersey and since I cannot have “Soares” on the back of it, I’d have them personalize “CRUSH-EM” on the name plate.

  171. Pauoa Boy June 17, 2008 6:11 pm

Celtics should have swept through the playoffs, to me they seemed very inconsistent in the playoffs with all that experience and talent. That’s why I drank the Celtic haterade, watching them play was irritating. On the other hand the Lakers who were playing well up until the finals just choked. Oh well, I don’t care for either team but it was cool having an old school matchup I guess.

  172. Kekoa June 17, 2008 6:12 pm

Tsaikos…give yourselves a big hand for being a very warm and receptive audience for our honored guests at todays CC. Lots of good fuud, beautiful friendships made new, or re-newed. One of those Tsaiko moments that are more memorable than Kodak. Welcome home Ronnie!

The final qualifier for todays CC was to add the football element. Abe Markowitz provided that part in a HUGE way. This young man put away a triple Tsaiko portion of groceries! No doubt he will Represent us well! Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Markowitz for raising such a fine young man, who just happens to play football very, very well.

  173. Curt June 17, 2008 6:12 pm

Congratulations Boston fans. I sure didn’t think they could pull it off before the series started.

  174. brew808 June 17, 2008 6:16 pm

    MeiLing

Now the the NBA game/season is over, how are your Diamondbacks doing? Go A’s!!! 😀 😯 😆

  175. Pauoa Boy June 17, 2008 6:17 pm

brew808 – I love guys that love to hit and kill people so BLAZE # 53 would be my choice of numbah. I’m sure #44 Adam’s would be a popular numbah dis year since he’s getting alot of pre-season love so far. I would like to see Mouton’s numbah two. You right I think the defense would win out the numbers game. Maybe #4 LWJ or #86 Iceman…what about #55 Estes?

  176. Kazz June 17, 2008 6:18 pm

    Funny thought:

If the NBA had “fixed” or pre-determined outcomes like that one NBA ref “suggests” than maybe it would have been a better Finals.

To take a page out of the WWE writers:

Game 7 comes down to with LA losing by a single basket and a few seconds left on the clock, Kobe is fouled out, then out of nowhere the lights dim and SHAQ comes walking through the tunnel, takes off his sweats to reveal he is wearing his old LA uniform.

He then proceeds to take Kobe’s place or at least become the 5th man on the court with a few other substitutions.. anyway… when he has strong posession under the basket to tie things up he throws the ball out of bounds…

With the Lakers and the crowd confused… Shaq proceeds to rip off his Laker uni to reveal a Celtics jersey…

The hometown in Boston is going insane… Shaq proceeds to grab the mic and declares Kobe a “punk” and says “this one is for you”…

    Voila…

    There is your ending!

heh, I should be up in Stamford, CT making 6 figures a year for Vince McMahon.

  177. Jason June 17, 2008 6:20 pm

I wasn’t a fan of Boston, Paul Pierce, Doc Rivers, Rajon Rondo, and the young Celtics players entering this year. But for the sake of Celtics fans everywhere — I was wrong on all accounts. It wasn’t pretty throughout the playoffs, but the Celtics persevered and played well when it mattered.

  178. Pauoa Boy June 17, 2008 6:22 pm

Kazz – you shua you not Vince McMahon???

  179. brew808 June 17, 2008 6:24 pm

    Kazz, Pauoa Boy

It’ll be interesting to see what numbers UH and UA try to market! I suppose the local print shops will be busy!

Has there been any discussion on what numbers Rausch, Alexander, or Jantz (yeah, likely red-shirt) might be given? I see that 14, 15, and 18 haven’t been yet assigned. 😯

  180. Kazz June 17, 2008 6:24 pm

    FYI,

For all the 24 Hr Fitness Members on da blog.

I have noticed that the Muscle Milk is on sale there for 19.99. I think the deal is only available until this Thursday.

Just don’t buy the Mocha Joe flavor… yuck…

  181. Pauoa Boy June 17, 2008 6:25 pm

Ahhh…it’s about time KG got a ring he deserves it, he’s the only one I like on the Celtics…oh and Leon Powe too

brew808 – I think in that same order you wrote em down would be what they wear, maybe you might be phsycic?

    Rausch – #14
    Alexander – #15
    Jantz – #18

  184. brew808 June 17, 2008 6:28 pm

    Nestle’s Quick…. Ovaltine…. mudslide… please

  185. Pauoa Boy June 17, 2008 6:29 pm

Fo reals I would love to have just one year worth of dat guys salary, sheesh!

  186. Kazz June 17, 2008 6:30 pm

    Brew808,

#s 14 and 15 may never be worn by another Warrior ever again.

But I think Alexander wore #18 in JC and that # is available right now. Not sure what #s Jantz or Rausch will be given. I think the only # available under #20 is 16.

We are running out of #s!!! Plus we are already “doubling up”.

  187. SteveM June 17, 2008 6:31 pm

Hi Curt — I don’t recall having seen or heard from you since the Christmas Party and the Sugar Bowl photos. Good to see you back!

Curt, Meg, Peaches, and I were the newbies who sat together at Blog Party 2 🙂

  188. brew808 June 17, 2008 6:32 pm

    Kazz

    You’re right! I forgot about 16. JoPierre Davis has #16 – but he’s on the D! 😕

  189. Kazz June 17, 2008 6:33 pm

Technically, QBs in the NFL are limited to #s 1-19, but I guess college QBs can wear any # from 1-99.

Again, I cannot see anyone wearing #14 right now or anytime soon and I’m sure the year 2007-beginning 2008 will be the LAST time anyone will see #15 worn on a UH football player’s jersey.

  190. brew808 June 17, 2008 6:34 pm

    … hard to picture SteveM as a “newbie”….. 😆

  191. Jason June 17, 2008 6:35 pm

    Available offensive numbers under 20: 2, 3, 7, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18

  192. Pauoa Boy June 17, 2008 6:36 pm

Wonder why 0 or 00 is not used, anyone get some ka-knowledge on dat?

  193. Kazz June 17, 2008 6:37 pm

    Brew,

I too forgot about what # JPD wears, but I guess they would double that up seeing as how Braston Satele is 13 and Bryce Kalauokaaea is also 13.

In that case #s 7 and 3 can be available as well. As E-Rob and Dowling have those and they are both on the secondary.

  194. brew808 June 17, 2008 6:37 pm

Right now, both Jake Heun and Richard Torres share #19. Do you think anyone with get those two players confused? 😀

  195. MeiLing June 17, 2008 6:38 pm

    brew808,

Too engrossed in the NBA playoff game. Didn’t watch the D-Backs play the A’s, another one of my favorite teams since I lived in Oakland. Have to catch Sports Center. Glad the Celtics won. The Lakers & Spurs tend to run over the Suns, so I no like them too much. I really liked Leon Powe in the 2nd game of the playoffs. Looked up his bio and he’s just a day older than my son, and he’s from Oakland! Touching story. And he’s a good-looking guy!

Rajon Rondo was outstanding in defense tonight! Wow! Great asset.

I don’t think I’ll be able to catch the A’s playing at home this summer. May be able to get to a Giants game, another one of my favorite teams since I lived in SF, too. Gotta figah out when I can get to the Bay Area. I love it there.

    Laterz….

  196. Kazz June 17, 2008 6:38 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

    Hmmm.. that’s some trivia there…

“Who was the last UH football player to wear 0 or 00″…

Besides the #0 is so rare I was suprised to see Kareem Nitoto on the basketball team sporting it last year.

  197. brew808 June 17, 2008 6:39 pm

    Jason – Is this a math problem? What is the next number in the sequence… 2, 3, 7, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18? 😆

  198. Kazz June 17, 2008 6:41 pm

    brew808:

Right now, both Jake Heun and Richard Torres share #19. Do you think anyone with get those two players confused?

    HA!

I hope the other teams do… because either:

-the opposing defensive front will be in for a nasty surprise.
    or
-the opposing WRs will not see what just intercepted them.

  199. MeiLing June 17, 2008 6:44 pm

Aiyah! Webb really got roughed up by the A’s tonight! There’s always tomorrow…

Funny thing… I have a Boston Red Sox hat signed by Barry Zito. I was at a game at Fenway in May 2005. Got to watch Zito warm up before the game; amazing ball movement. Wonder what happened to him since he was traded to SF?

  200. SteveM June 17, 2008 6:47 pm

brew808 — I’m still a newbie but I have fun nowadays… just like that newbie from the same time frame who liked to tease me with his satellite spycam and send me strange emails… yeah… you 🙁

    🙂

  201. brew808 June 17, 2008 6:48 pm

    Barry Zero… ERA = 5.88, $13M per win…. an excellent non-signing for the A’s! 😀

  202. Pauoa Boy June 17, 2008 6:51 pm

Thought this was interesting speaking of the jersey numbers game:

    NCAA and high school
In college football, a less rigid numbering system is employed. The only rule is that members of the offensive line (centers, guards, and tackles) that play in ineligible positions must wear numbers between 50-79. Informally, certain conventions still hold, and players often wear numbers in the ranges similar to their NFL counterparts; though the lowest numbers are often the highest prestige, and thus are often worn by players at any position. Kickers and punters are frequently numbered in the 40’s or 90’s, which are the least in-demand numbers on a college roster. The increased flexibility in numbering of NCAA rosters is needed since NCAA rules allow 85-player rosters; thus teams would frequently exhaust the available numbers for a position under the NFL rules.

Individual schools often have superstitions or traditions involving certain numbers. It may be a great honor to be given the number “1” uniform, for example, like at the University of Michigan. Perhaps most famously, Syracuse University historically reserved number “44” for its best running backs, including Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, and Floyd Little,[19] finally retiring the number permanently in 2005.[20]

On high school and other lower youth teams, jerseys with different number ranges are different sizes, and since many of these teams don’t reorder jerseys every year, players are often assigned numbers based more on jerseys that fit them rather than specific position (though the rules on numbering the offensive line still apply).

  203. brew808 June 17, 2008 6:52 pm

SteveM – I’m really surprised you haven’t jumped on the SF to Maui to join whitey, duffer, and al at a Maui “Mu” call! Hey – even Stretch, Mr. & Mrs. bulla, and Liz have made it there for 5F’s!!! 😯 😀

hehe, hubby was so upset that the Lakers lost, he said Jackson should either resign or be fired. It was an embarrassing game.

He also said that per Al, Stretch should buy me a double lobster tail dinner. But, I told him I would prefer the buffet.

  210. Jason June 17, 2008 7:21 pm

    Personnel or personal?

(Don’t forget the media guides. Thanks, boss.)

See! The Wendy’s commercial shows real strawberries, not strawberry syrup! But that’s okay, it tasted alright. But you gotta go with the chocolate fudge shake — chocolate Frostys are always better than vanilla, and the fudge adds a nice boldness.

  215. Jason June 17, 2008 7:50 pm

Happy birthday, Jerry! How come you didn’t say anything? ❗

BTW, the Chinese chicken salad from Wendy’s is ‘ono. (Yes, not only did I shell out $2.99 each to sample the three different Frosty shakes, I also bought a salad for dinner.)

Re- Florida will not be over looking UH

Florida ranked first in the preseason polls will come into this game with a lot of incentives to beat UH other that trying to convince the pollsters that they are deserving of this distinction. On their locker room bulletin board is a list, I’m imagining, of all the motivations to hype the team. Going back to last year, all the Coach Jones’ quotes slighting the eventual Heisman winner will be displayed prominently. The quote, “I don’t think Tebow would start on our team” will be played like a Rocky theme song in the Florida media as game day approaches. Tebow will take this game personally. And his team mates and the fans will, too.

The Florida fans, following a long summer fighting off the disappointment of their two time defending champion basketball team 2006, 2007, not even receiving an NCAA tournament invite in 2008 will want some winning ambrosia, something especially good to taste and smell. Their fans want to beat Hawaii bad. They want to kick off the new season with an exclamation marks on all phases of the game. A final score that’s convincing of superiority and deserving of a number one national ranking is what their fans want. Collectively, the cheering Florida fans will not let their team to overlook UH.

And the coach for Florida, Urban Meyers, will have to keep his team grounded. And think only of UH and not about the upcoming SEC schedule. All he has to say to his team is one significant word to fire up their team-“Georgia”. Alluding to Georgia did this…Georgia did that…Georgia smashed Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl will make the players want to prove to the coaches and to themselves that a comparable beating of UH like how Georgia beat Hawaii will allow Florida to stand tall. And allow them to look at their Georgia counterparts equally. The players know by losing this game and, or, overlooking, they’ll suffer the scourge of their fans. And the SEC. So don’t expect them to overlook this game.

With the mystery of what not to expect of the UH offense, like what offense are we going to run and which QB is starting would only pique the interests of the Florida team. And make them want to prepare harder. The element of surprise looming will keep the Florida team with their guard up, which is not conducive to having a let down. Don’t expect Florida to follow in the footsteps of Michigan losing to Appalachian State. This is the second significant word that their coaches will convey to their players, “Appalachian State”. Therefore don’t expect any wasted repetitions as the Florida team prepares for UH. Expect their team to practice seriously. And I would expect their coaches to educate their players of all the significant reasons why not to overlook UH. Impressing on the players, probably, that on paper UH wasn’t a big underdog in the Georgia game (-8 ). So don’t take them lightly is the overplayed message. Continuing their coaches will show their players the names of all the NFL Hawaiians and impressing upon the team that there’s some fine talent in the island. And the bombshell to keep their team focused is a recap of Hawaii visiting Washington in 1973 (50 pt. underdogs) and beating them.

For the Hawaii fans and this writer we don’t want it any other way. We want you to prepare hard. And not overlook us. Please bring your best punch. Please bring your star studded roster of 4 and 5 star athletes. And 80 thousand fans cheering wildly. Because for us in valuing a Hawaii win would be greater enhanced knowing you all prepare and cheer so hard against us. So bring it on.

    SJMACRO,

SHOUTOUT TO YOU MY FRIEND! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

  226. whitey June 17, 2008 8:31 pm

lizk, sorry about not mentioning your name, remind me to buy you a drink. went to the big island and met bighilofan2. duffer met plenty of you on his last trip and hopefully i will be able to make the july trip.

sometimes, what is said here is hilarious and well meant, but saying that you will not go or support the warriors till they change their coaching staff is ridiculous. No one knows how the team will play this year or how the coaches will get ready for games and to be a “nostradamis” is outright stupidity. venting your thoughts is ok, but if you have no facts or basis, the smart thing is to sit back and watch.

  227. brew808 June 17, 2008 8:32 pm

    Hi whitey

I forgot about tommui. I remembered that about Mr. Coast Guard guy SteveM. But they used the BIG boat to visit you on Maui…. and not via the SupaFerry! 🙄

BTW – both Shane and Kurt are playing well and starting to hit! 😆

    😀 ~• • •~ Happy Birthday sjmacro!!~• • •~ 😀

  228. whitey June 17, 2008 8:41 pm

thanks brew. both of them got potential to be in the majors for awhile. i going see my friend and see if can get some autograph pic of Kurt for the Tsaikos. i don’t watch baseball very much, but my 2 golf partners are dying with the braves.

  229. LizKauai June 17, 2008 8:54 pm

    Hauoli Lahanau, sjmacro!!!

    Hiya.

Well, (that’s a deep subject), I had to go to the ER today for a few hours – and found out I needed “a procedure” asap. The nurse said- good news- the surgeon can see me on Thursday and do the procedure on Friday.
(remember, I am in the ER now)

Uh- Thursday? hmmmm… I am supposed to be in Honolulu on Thursday for a very important event. Sooo… if I have the procedure on Friday, I cannot eat on Thursday, right? (arrrrgh!!!) How about Monday?

Scamper, scamper scamper, Dr. says procedure. ASAP. Scamper scamper scamper.

Good news! Surgeon can see you right now. Procedure tomorrow since you didn’t eat lunch today. Then, if all goes well, you can got to Honolulu AND eat with a, er, clean slate!

    Phew!
The life of a practicing Tsai-ko is full of little challenges.

  230. gigi-hawaii © June 17, 2008 8:58 pm

hmmm, Liz, leg paralysis is no laughing matter. Hope you are well enough to travel. Said a special prayer for you.

  231. Curt June 17, 2008 8:58 pm

    SteveM,

Hope you and Peaches are doing well. You’re right about my disappearing after the Sugar Bowl. I’ve been working alot and Meg “forced” me to go to Yellowstone last week. Couldn’t believe it but we ran into near blizzard conditions during our June vacation. Temperatures dropped into the 20s, the snow was coming down, and several roads were shut down. Luckily, I brought the gloves, scarves, jackets, knit hats, and of course the rubbah slippahs to counter the snow.

  232. gigi-hawaii © June 17, 2008 9:00 pm

Curt, winter during the summer? Who would’ve thought it could happen?

  233. Kazz June 17, 2008 9:02 pm

    Jason,

Speaking of fast food. I remember driving around trying to find a local Taco Bell that sold the “Fruitista Freeze” drink.

I am a sucker for that kind of stuff even though I really don’t like Jamba Juice that much.

Needless to say I didn’t realize how much of a waste of time that was until it was too late…

    I never got my drink…

  234. LizKauai June 17, 2008 9:02 pm

Hoo Ronnie! Da keeds is getting TALL!
Rob25 and Ronnie IN DA HOUSE!

  235. jm2375 June 17, 2008 9:05 pm

Happy Birthday to sjmacro & Jerry!

I guess BostonPordagee will be a happy camper tomorrow at work! (He looks local, but once he opens his mouth – paaahk da caar in Haavard yaard. :))

  236. Curt June 17, 2008 9:10 pm

    Hi Gigi,

How are you and hubby doing?

Yeah we couldn’t believe winter in June. After the storm dumped snow in Yellowstone, it flooded the midwest pretty good. But, it was blessing for the niece and nephew who never built a snow man before–kind of hard to do in Honolulu.

  237. HiFlyer June 17, 2008 9:11 pm

Liz, Hope all is well and you are able to make it on thursday.

  238. LizKauai June 17, 2008 9:12 pm

Curt- my boss and family are on their way to the CA park areas… I hope they are prepared for the weather!

    Mahalo, gigi and jm2375.

Bas-tonians are fun. I love regional accents. When I get lonely for my WI roots, I watch old Sat. Nite Live episodes or Fargo and smile a lot, don’t cha know.

Ok… time for more clear liquids…
    😳

  239. Curt June 17, 2008 9:12 pm

    Hi Liz,

    Good luck on your surgery.

  240. prepplayer2 June 17, 2008 9:14 pm

prepplayer giving up on UH because it doesn’t have coaches who played in the NFL. Instead he’ll continue to follow USC (Pete Carroll couldn’t make it in the World Football League after his UOP days) and Washington (Ty Willingham became a grad assistant at Michigan State after his college career) instead?

  241. Jason June 17, 2008 9:18 pm

Liz: Main thing is you get healthy; my Mom and I will say a prayer for you, and I’ll be sure to bring it up tomorrow at church. If you can’t make it on Thursday, maybe we can have a special Camellia trip just for you the next time you’re here — it appears that the Beretania location is under new ownership, and they have a new menu. *hint to the other Tsaikos*

(I’m curious cause my family has always gone to the Beretania location. I want to see how the new ownership should affect our habits — if junk, maybe we should go to the McCully location from now on instead.)

whitey: You confused me for a few minutes, I thought you were talking to Liz when you were addressing someone else. Even after I responded to his post, I forgot all about it, so I was confused. Liz isn’t the kind of person to say anything like that! 😀

    Prep:
Excellent suggestion about Maa Tanuvasa. UH, in fact, wanted to hire him. But without getting into personnel issues, Maa did not meet the minimum qualifications set by the university. And, no, this is not the time for Al and DPK to call me up and ask: “So, why didn’t he make it?”

now, now. the kid would call for that, but me, never. i already know the answer as a matter of fact.

  243. al June 17, 2008 9:24 pm

    happy birthday jerry.

now, real men are not ashamed of their real age. so what is it?

  244. al June 17, 2008 9:26 pm

gigi.. you never heard that song before?
don’t you listen to the radio or online radio?
i guess you are spending too much time all by yourself.

Al, I have heard that melody many times, just never paid attention to the lyrics.

well, didn’t take a nap today cause of the Celtics fantastic game. So adios, amigos. Gonna hit the sack. This jet lag is awful.

  247. al June 17, 2008 9:30 pm

gigi…..best thing for “jet lag” lots of water, drink twice the amount you normally do.

  248. LizKauai June 17, 2008 9:43 pm

    Mahalo, Curt, HiFlyer, Jason.
We are all in Ke Akua’s hands.

On another note- here’s the latest I see on our hometown hero:

    http://www.rototimes.com/nfl/player.php?tqid=7243&type=news&nid=39597

Dizon to enter camp as a backup

Jordon Dizon will start training camp as the backup middle linebacker to Paris Lenon, according to Mlive.com. There appears to be a bone of contention between head coach Rod Marinelli, who doesn’t think a rookie can adequately handle the middle in his first year, and team president Matt Millen, who believes that the right player can get the job done.
Our View: The compromise is that Dizon will stay in the middle, but will have to prove to Marinelli that he can be effective before he gets promoted. Marinelli doesn’t have many issues with Dizon having the physical abilities but he needs to make sure Dizon can nail down the mental aspect of the job. Stay tuned.

    prepplayer2:

    June 17th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
prepplayer giving up on UH because it doesn’t have coaches who played in the NFL. Instead he’ll continue to follow USC (Pete Carroll couldn’t make it in the World Football League after his UOP days) and Washington (Ty Willingham became a grad assistant at Michigan State after his college career) instead?

Well PP2, I think prepplayer is either:

-Venting because he/she skipped out on buying Al and DPK lunch STILL!!!
    or
-Just one of the many people still upset at UH during the JJ era over the fact that WHILE GAMES WERE WON, their precious little “spread” was never met or whatever it is gamblers call it…

Mahalo plentee fellow Tsaiko’s…Abe and our family have been truly humbled by the aloha shown our son on his impending departure…and our Tsaiko In Training (T.I.T.) Al Sim, Abe’s hanai uncle. Many blessings will be upon all of you…Kekoa, LizK, Homey, A-House Family, Pride, ST, Mojo, Ralph, Ronnie & Family, WassupDoc, SJ and the rest. With this kindness and thoughtful words you have shared with him, and Abe’s USC #50 “Hawaii 5-0 jersey”…he will surely remember that all he does good (and hopefully no bad) reflects on Hawaii, his family and his hanai Tsaiko Family. I think you reinforced today that goodness will manifest itself in a happy life, and success. Shalom and fa’afetai tele lo’o fa’a aiga o Hawaii.

  262. Kekoa June 17, 2008 11:23 pm

Stretch ~ I searched all the cookbooks on the web, but none seemed to have a very good recipe for Crow, so I picked the best of the rest. However, I do have a very fine German Wine I’m bringing you Thursday to serve with your Crow Flambe’ alle Humma Humma

  263. Kekoa June 17, 2008 11:29 pm

Liz ~ Please take your time and make very sure that you’re 100%. We want to have you with us, so that we can enjoy your company sans worry. When we told you to ‘break a leg’ we didn’t mean for you to take us literally!

  264. Kekoa June 17, 2008 11:33 pm

SJ ~ You sly guy!…I nevah know wuz yo bertday!! Happy Bertday to you braddah…you are indeed one of The Few, The Proud, The Tsaiko!

  265. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 17, 2008 11:35 pm

LIZ – Please don’t push it – there’s always July 10 and now August 19, not to mention the assorted T-Gates before the home games.

Had an emergency appendectomy at 2 am on July 4, 2003, and was back home by 4 pm the same day, but I slept pretty much through the next 24 hours. You may find yourself doing the same thing. However, we were out kayaking the day after that – very carefully, of course.

    ******

Got The Call from the ticket office yesterday. I’m not too happy about being in the orange section in the South End Zone, but maybe we can move up one section if nothing is available on the sidelines. Any chance of getting live tv in Aloha Stadium?

    ******

It was really great seeing so many familiar faces at the Camellia earlier today even though I couldn’t stay for more than 15 minutes because of other commitments.

Time to head back across the mountains. NiteNite.

  266. Kekoa June 17, 2008 11:53 pm

One final shout out to Rob25 for coming out to support her good friend and fellow Tsaikette. Enjoyed meeting you today at the CC. Please make it a habit to join us more often. Besides, few women have been able to break the spell of the flashing chopsticks displayed by the Master himself, Homey.

  267. Kekoa June 17, 2008 11:59 pm

Pops asked ‘little abe’ what his current height (6’2″) and weight (270 lbs) was. As you can see in this picture, Pops didn’t believe a word of it as he watched 20 lbs of meat disappear in mere minutes!
    (Click on the name).

    Buenos noches, gang. Hasta manana.

  269. Jason June 18, 2008 12:12 am

At the other side of the Camellia table, some of us were talking. Since the time of the Hula Bowl, Abe has definitely hit the weights. The way his body is chiseled reminded me of Chris Brown — maybe not as big (yet), but in the same mold of solid rock.

    Good night, all.

  270. Jason June 18, 2008 12:14 am

To clarify, the Hula Bowl was the last time I saw Abe. Not that he played in it, obviously, but I was with Barry, his kids, and Liz.

  271. LizKauai June 18, 2008 12:15 am

Mahalo, Doc, Kekoa, bhf2. I will take it easy tomorrow. I have a bunch of 2007 Warrior videos to keep me warm 😆 Woo Hoo!

Maaan… Kekoa, I gotta get to Camellias one day soon. Abe- have the best of the best college experience! Pops looks great, btw… I can just see him trying to get something off that grill between Abe and some left-handed chopstick person.

  272. las vegas June 18, 2008 12:21 am

    LizKauai,
Take care of those sexy legs and get well soon.
Rich & Ronnie, enjoy the visit home!

  273. las vegas June 18, 2008 12:24 am

Abe must be skilled with the chopsticks, I would never be able to survive a yakiniku meal in a white shirt

  274. Kekoa June 18, 2008 12:27 am

Time to get some Zzzz after a very satisfying day. So G’nite all as Kekoa has left the building.

  275. LizKauai June 18, 2008 12:40 am

    Hi Rich!
Happy Golf Dreams and a Warm Nitey Nite to all!

Mr. Tsai…who is dat handsome kid with the red shorts and black shirt holding the bag I think for Keith Ah Soon in the O Line Drills picture???? Did you forget his name already?????? Let me refresh your memory….his name is Tuiatua Kerisiano Tuiasosopo, Freshman Offensive Lineman, Saint Louis School Class of 2008! Yup, that’s my BABY!!! Well, I can guarantee you one thing…My Tuiatua (Tui) will not let anyone forget his name…you know why???? ‘Cause the football boys will be yelling “Tui….your Mom is looking for you” lol lol lol…it’s an inside joke…lol lol lol…

Would looooooooove to CCCCCCCCC more pictures of the OLINE on your Blog Site! Tuiatua (Tui) and PaiPai Falemalu are roomies for Summer School and when they report for Fall Camp! Tui has shared and called everyday to let his Daddy and myself know that Coach Tommy Heffernan has an unreal workout for them EVERY DAY!!! Tui says…”Mom, I now know the difference between a high school workout… and a college workout” Tui loves it that Coach Tommy Heffernan challenges them everyday to improve everyday! He says that Coach Tommy Heffernan expects the BEST from them every morning they report for Work Outs! Tui said he’s excited about reporting for FALL CAMP!!!

Final question…How do I and some of my friends who are FOOTBALL MOMS themselves register for Heather McMackin’s Football Workshop? Please advise!

    Thank you Stephen!

P.S. The Tsaiko’s were out in full force at the Beast’s Bash last Thursday!
